An Uplifting Tale from the 1992-93 Double Cup Winning Season

February 26, 2020

Another story from that important (to me) Double Cup winning season (and apologies to those  AAers who’ve heard it before).

At this point in my professional career I was still teaching Physical Education and had designed a new GCSE course to satisfy the young sportsmen and women in my comprehensive school entitled Sports Science. It had both a theoretical and practical structure.

The largish group of 26 were an enthusiastic and talented group who were a pleasure to teach and we had great fun for the two year course. At the end of the very last practical exam (assessed by external examiners), the kids asked me to stay behind in the Sportshall for a few minutes. To my astonishment, one of the smallest and most roguish boys pulled out a gift for me to say thank you for my efforts.

He explained he was doing a weekend job, to make some money, at the Adidas factory in London responsible for producing Arsenal’s match shirts. Although copies of the FA Cup shirt were made available to supporters to buy that season, the League Cup shirt was restricted to 11 plus sub, all printed at the factory he was working at.

Only it wasn’t! Knowing I was an Arsenal nut, this young man persuaded his boss to print a 13th shirt and here it was presented to me.

Unbelievable! Made me very proud and in fact weep briefly. I will never regret 23 years teaching kids.

Would Jack Grealish Be a Good Fit For Arsenal?

January 9, 2020

Jack Grealish is backing up his good performances last season with a solid season this year.

He has already recorded more goals (8) this year, has created 52 chances (4th in the EPL) but ranks 1st in creating chances from open play (46 to 33 for Sterling who is second)) and is the most fouled players in the EPL (88 fouls to 66 for Zaha who is second). He is playing as a fake left-winger and is given a type of hybrid role where he can also play as a false nine. He is also a player that does not hesitate to contribute defensively and he is someone who will work his socks off.

Should we go for him?

  1. Yes, he is on his way to become a top EPL player and is only aged 24 and can play as a CM, AML and FW. He could be Ozil’s successor in time as a 10 (his preferred position). Better to get him now than later…He seems to have the engine to meet the demands of Arteta’s intense playing style.
  2. No, he is already too expensive for us (pbbly over 60 Mln EUR) and we do not want to limit the growth potential of Martinelli, Saka, Willock and Nelson.

What is your take on this very good but somehow divisive player…?

Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to Gooners Everywhere … and a Big Thank You to Mike Steeden

December 25, 2019

Well it’s not been an easy year to be an Arsenal supporter, but here we are still going strong, slightly battered and bruised but with renewed optimism now that Mikel’s sleigh has landed on our roof.

I’ll be honest, I’ve found it difficult to maintain my input on AA at times this season and have had to retire to a darkened room to execute a self imposed ban on all media. Thankfully the likes of Peaches, Rocky, RC78 and other much valued regulars have kept the ball rolling on here.

There’s one guy in particular who without knowing it has helped keep me going. I view him and what he represents much like the Unknown Soldier … even though I know his name … it’s Mike Steeden.

To me, Mike represents the thousands of Arsenal supporters who read our blog but for their own reasons don’t wish to roll their sleeves up and get down and dirty in the daily debate. Just knowing that something an author on AA has bothered to write has been read is reward in itself.

But Mike does one other thing … on occasion, when he thinks the author deserves it .. he ‘likes’ a post. You can tell when he has because his name and pictogram are displayed at the end of the post in question.

Mike is no pushover however. He’s discerning. He doesn’t ‘like’ every post, far from it, but when he does, I am always warmed by the fact that a post has received the MS seal of approval … it’s been awarded a ‘Steeden’ if you like. On the odd occasion he even likes one of my posts … what’s the betting he won’t this one 🙂

So a big thank you to Mike (sorry for blowing your cover), to our fabulous band of regular bloggers, and to all who visit and read AA … and to Arsenal supporters everywhere …  and since it’s Christmas … to everyone else on the planet … from all the team at AA.

As an extra treat, Rocky has gifted us all his version of this well known classic Christmas poem ….

‘Twas the night before Arsemas, when all through N5

Gooners were dreaming our club would soon thrive;

The stockings were hung by the kitman with care

But the Emirates stadium was still cold and bare.

The players were nestled all snug in their beds

While visions of title wins danced in their heads.

And Mesut in his jimjams and Bernt in his cap

Had just settled their brains for a long winter’s nap

When on the stadium roof there came such a clatter

I opened my window to see what was the matter.

Across Drayton Park I ran in a dash

And was up at the Ems in barely a flash.

The moon on the carpet of newly-mown grass

Shone bright on the strangeness now coming to pass.

For what to my wondering eyes should be there

But an open top bus pulled by eight spectral players,

With a spritely young driver, who held himself well:

I knew in a moment it must be Mikel.

He looked at his team mates all stripped for the game,

And he whistled and shouted and called them by name:

“Now Dennis! Now Liam!

Now Adams and Seaman!

On Patrick! On Bobby!

On Charlie! On Lehmann!

Through the hole in the roof!

To the top of the stand!

Now pull away! Pull away!

We’re in Arsenal-Land.”

Just as Tiny Tott hopes wilt when May comes around

In that terrible toilet bowl they call a ground,

So gravity yielded with hardly a fuss

And up to the roof flew Mikel and his bus.

And then in a twinkling above the Clock End

Mikel stood surrounded by Arsenal’s legends.

As I drew my head in and was looking around

Down onto the pitch he came with a bound.

His shirt was all red, with two sleeves of white,

His hair made of plastic, his boots shining bright.

A coach’s fat file he held in his hand

Wherein winning tactics were perfectly planned.

His eyes all a-twinkle he began speaking most gently

While his famous old club-mates listened intently:

“Things have been tricky of late we all know,

We have felt like we have no idea where to go.

We have stopped being hopeful and started to fear,

But that can all stop because now I am here

To lead us to places where we’re meant to be

For we’re never vanquished: we’re Arsenal FC!”

The legends all cheered and pumped fists in the air

It brought tears to my eye to see how they cared.

At that moment the floodlights came on with a bang

And more legends were there to join with the gang.

There Kelsey, there Wrighty, there Henry and Fred,

Here Bastin and Wilson and Rocky the Red.

And now from the neighbouring streets did appear

A crowd in their thousands all wearing the gear.

They filled up the stadium from bottom to top

And still they kept coming, the flow never stopped

And from all their mouths one message rang true:

“We love you! We love you Arsenal, we do!”

Mikel sprang to the bus and yanked down the cord,

And pulled by the legends it lifted and soared,

And I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight:

“Happy Arsemas to all, and to all a good night!”

With apologies to Clement Clarke Moore.

Arsenal Fan TV … An Outlet For ‘Fans’ To Express Their Legitimate Concerns … Or An Embarrassment?

December 23, 2019

There is widespread coverage of the away supporters confronting Robbie and his AFTV crew at the Everton game this weekend.

The first point we should accept is that AFTV has a perfect right to exist and is not breaking any laws by legitimately interviewing fans on public property before and after games.

I also think it’s fair to say that AFTV has become a bit of a pantomime displaying the full range of characters from Widow Twanky’s (AKA Claude) ignorance and entitlement personified and his alter ego Buttons (Ti) who is often interviewed at the same time in an attempt to offer some journalistic balance.

AFTV grew out of the disgruntlement that divided supporters in Arsene Wenger’s latter years. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if AFTV gets more hits from non Arsenal supporters who find our public self flagellation a source of great amusement. Personally I find it an embarrassment.

Let’s be honest, AFTV doesn’t exactly paint us as the most intelligent or loyal supporters. It’s entertaining viewing I suppose and I believe it has been very good for Robbie’s bank balance. Some would argue that it is a way of conveying a message to the club from ‘grass roots’ supporters.

The problem is that after the departure of the great man we’ve already made one bad managerial appointment and the need to be unified and supportive behind the new manager has never been greater if we are going to restore our club and the values we all hold dear …. and AFTV is not exactly helping is it?

Accepting that freedom of speech is sacrosanct and there is nothing we can do to stop Robbie and his crew, let us know how you feel about the idea of being represented by AFTV.

It’s Going To Be Arteta

December 17, 2019

I’ve been following Arsenal’s transfer dealings for many years now and know the signs when a deal is done … believe me … Mikel Arteta is going to be our next manager.

He’ll know the magnitude of the challenge he is facing – he saw it graphically on Sunday when City exposed the physical, technical and cultural flaws in our play.

As a supporter … (I’m speaking to you!) … do me a favour, if you want the best for Arsenal and are not waiting for the opportunity to say “I told you so” then this is all you have to do:

  1. Be patient.
  2. Get behind the players.
  3. Get behind the manager.
  4. Don’t judge until Mikel has had a chance to work on the squad and bring in some players.
  5. Lower your expectations.
  6. Applaud and enjoy when it’s good, encourage and support when it’s not.

As supporters we’ve gained (earned?) a reputation for being flaky, for not supporting as we should and for feeling entitled.

Currently we’re not being viewed as a top six club. We are not going to turn that around over night.

If we finish the season in the top 6 that will be a major achievement. If we don’t, see it as a stepping stone and let’s be optimistic that we can improve next season.

The Young Guns Open A Window To The Future

December 13, 2019

I didn’t see the game yesterday but it comes across as Saka being the key player in this game. It’s exciting when the youngsters give you a vision of what they could become.

I also read a report that spoke highly of ESR. Maybe he didn’t shine as much as Saka, and he lacked some consistency in his input across the 90, but this report was praising him for many of his lay off balls, and his ability to receive the ball and drive forwards at pace.

This is something that has been sorely missing in our play over the last number of months, the ball carriers in midfield, and even the mid to lower table sides seem to have midfielders that are comfortable receiving the ball and driving through the midfield, while we adopted a pedestrian passing game with little direct running from midfield.

Until recently we have had those players that can twist turn and spin away from opposition players and drive forwards when able; Rosicky, Santi, Jack, Cesc. As we now try and redevelop this team it is important that we do so around midfielders who are comfortable in receiving in tight spaces and then being able to carry the ball, as well as being able to pick a pass.

This is where Xhaka falls down in that he always needs an available pass, rather than being able to receive and move with it if a decent pass is not immediately available. Hence the number of sideways and backwards passing.

However in Douzi, Willock, Saka and ESR we have those players that have the natural talent to do it and we must build around all those players. Each may find a slightly different position. For instance will Douzi or ESR become more the intermediate BTB type midfielder, or will they become the most attacking CM / number 10. Will Saka be a wing forward type or could he be the most attacking CM / number 10.

All of them will have games where their precocious talent shines and some games that will be a bit mehh. Douzi is probably slightly ahead because he has played more games with the first team while ESR for instance has been hampered by injury which has hampered his loan spells.

My gut instinct actually tells me that ESR has, at the base level, the greater natural ability in CM, and I have always said I see a young De-Bruyne in him. However I think all 4 should succeed with the right coaching, patience (when it doesn’t always come off), and emphasis on that quicker attacking style of play, and each may take up a slightly different role in the side anyway.

What has also hampered them all, and the team in general, is in not having the right DM (holding type DM) tucked in behind them. It is going over old news I know, but it is not just the team that has suffered from this oversight, but it could start to stifle the development of these young quality players.

This is why I would like Xhaka removed from the equation. I actually recognise many of his qualities, but they look more suited to a different league, and what he lacks for the EPL is, not only unbalancing the team, but is not allowing those young players to develop in their best positions with freedom.

Again my immediate solution would be to move Luiz forwards into the holding midfield role. In his absence we could play Chambers there. We should go and get a top CD in January as our main priority (say for instance Upemacano), and move on either Socratis or Mustaffi in Jan, with the other going in the summer once Saliba arrives.

Then we could go and try and source an up and coming Ndidi (rather than spend a fortune on the actual one), safe in the knowledge that we have cover in that role for a couple of seasons through Luiz and possibly Chambers.

Going into next season we could have our main CB’s as Holding, Saliba, Chambers, Upemmacano. We could have a holding midfield boasting Luiz and the promising new Ndidi, and across both the CB and holding midfield positions we know we can shift Luiz and Chambers into either role depending on where we are suffering the most with injuries.

Then just let the youngsters mentioned, including Martinelli and possibly John Jules and Nketieh, thrive and develop in the CM, ACM, wing forward and forward roles, with Ozil there as experience for 1 more season and one of Laca or Auba staying on (I think we will lose at least one of them).

Standard Liège – No Waffling Please Freddie!

December 12, 2019

Arsenal travel to Liege, a little town in Belgium known for its waffles (gauffres de liege), coffee (cafe liegeois), its opera house and train station and not so exciting weather but very friendly local people who despite the rain do not hesitate to sit outsite on terraces to enjoy coffees and beers alike…

This is our last Europa League group stage game. Barring a 5-1 loss at Liege’s hand, we will qualify. A draw sees us through for sure and a win would help with our mood and confidence.

What should Freddie do? Keep the momentum going with the same squad or rotate ahead of our big test against City? We have a few injured with Bellerin, Tierney, Xhaka, Ceba and certainly Holding. Liege is not a bad squad, they have some decent players, especially Mpoku – a very able dribbler and he is an industrious player too not hesitating to put in a shift. Liege will create chances but will concede chances too so if I were FL, I d play a team with fast players on the sides and Laca upfront.

Expected team:
Martinez

Chambers, Sokratis, Luiz, Kolasinac

Douzi, Torreira, Willock

Nelsson, Laca, Saka

My team:
Martinez

Medley, Chambers, Sok – AMN

Douzi, Luiz, Nelsson

Willock, Saka – Laca

I know that I put Nelsson as a WB but I think that with our back 3, AMN and Nelsson as WBs are not too much of a risk as long as the front three also defend properly.

COYG!

Emery’s Inability To Solve Our Midfield Problem Will Be His Downfall

October 29, 2019

Emery looks to be out of his depth in the EPL. I find more fault with him than with any individual player per-se. All clubs at all points in their history have a player or two that you initially thought would be something very good, but then turns out to either not be quite good enough or not quite the right fit.

It is up to the manager to ensure that appropriate changes are made to ensure progression in a different and better direction, and also to ensure that their is no major fall-out as we see now. The players need the protection of the manager in that sense as well, to not unnecessarily expose them either firstly at a level they are not good enough for and/or secondly in a team system that doesn’t compliment them. Interestingly I generally feel that we are more guilty of the latter than the former.

I have a major disagreement with the booing fans but also I have a major disagreement with Xhaka’s reaction. Perhaps more damning is that once the immediate dust and anger had settled, that he hasn’t opted to send a message and apology to the fans. It is this rather than the spur of the moment reaction that will likely now seal Xhaka’s fate.

I do have some sympathy with him though because he was what he was before he came to us. He never was a holding midfield type player and was used to playing with a more rugged positionally disciplined player tucked in behind him in the Bundesliga. Xhaka was more a deeper defensive midfield play-maker not the invisible wall, that was someone else.

All Xhaka has done is remain what he was, so really the fault is in the managerial recruitment and assessment of what role he should play, and how to balance a midfield with him in it if he was deemed an important player in the first 11.

The problem is that, arguably Torreira aside from our listed midfielders, all the other midfielders are also players that need a more rugged positionally disciplined midfielder tucked in behind them, so when we play two of these midfielders together no-one completely accepts the responsibility for this role.

I get the argument for the pivot shift in a modern game but we just look confused as to who does what so I think it is still important to have players with certain characteristics that compliment and get the best out of each other. We don’t have that 1 midfielder (among our listed midfielders) who has that one specific characteristic or skill set, arguably Torreira aside, who inexplicably seems to have dropped down the pecking order.

You could still play Xhaka if you had that specific player just in behind him but then that would remove a place for our other midfielders like Douzi, Willock, ESR, Ceballos, Torreira and, should he still be a consideration, Ozil; that one baffles me and also makes me seriously question the managerial handling of him.

The problem is actually fairly identical to what we had under Wenger in his third trimester, that we have too many midfielders who favour similar positions in the midfield and lack balance despite looking individually strong on paper.

The EPL is a very specific league with very specific characteristics, and what I think we are finding out, not just with Emery but also with other overseas managers, that sometimes a manger with a reasonable C.V coming in from abroad just doesn’t quite get what is required in the EPL.

More than in any other league you need to at least match, but preferably better, the opposition in the physical aspect of midfield. You need power pace and dynamism to match the mid to lower table teams and then, as a top club, also have the superior technical ability to go with it.

Without matching up with those clubs in the athleticism in midfield you can lose that midfield battle and surrender dominance to a team boasting less technical players. How often have we looked good on paper but not in practice? How often do we feel we look like a collection of good individuals rather than a smoothly balanced machine that connects throughout the team.

Match them physically but in addition with the better technical players then we by and large will not slip up with these teams that don’t have our resources. We will once again look like one of the top sides to be feared. We are not doing this right now and haven’t for quite a few years.

We look lackluster in attack, despite boasting some excellent attackers that many clubs would love to have. The defence could be improved in individual quality somewhat, but for me the more worrying aspect is how exposed our defence is to wave upon wave of attack rather than the individual quality of each player in our defence.

Those teams have to come through our midfield to get to the defence in the first place. Our midfield is not dominant enough to win the battle and control the play, all of which would stop many of the frequent attacks form getting at our defence, but also would provide a better platform from which to feed our attackers.

Our central fulcrum is not solid enough so everything that surrounds it, despite its quality is compromised. For an analogy I see it as a steel devise with a central core or fulcrum (midfield) with levers springing off from there to the font back and sides. All the levers could be of the most advanced and solid mettle that NASA has available but if the fulcrum is weak and bendy it makes not a jot of difference about the strength of everything that springs off it.

We have good individual midfielders but as a combined unit we are poor. Emery hasn’t got this, or at least worked it out yet, and certainly hasn’t tried anything to change it. It is as if his experience to date just hasn’t prepared him for this league, and it doesn’t look like the penny is dropping, and I tend to feel he should only have till the new year at best to show he has the ability to make the changes that improve us.

We may still need to recruit and offload to improve the midfield balance, but even before this I don’t believe that we can’t set up stronger with what we already have. Right now I don’t see that Emery is anywhere near having his Eureka moment and suddenly get it, so it seems more than likely we will have to look elsewhere, fairly imminently, for someone with that better ability and insight of what it takes to develop a top EPL team.

I do hope that if we do have some high level departures with certain players and / or the manager that it can be done with a sense of decorum and decency from all concerned with the club, including the fans.

Sell Ozil … Send Emile Smith-Rowe Out On Loan …

October 9, 2019

The title of this post sums up the consensus of opinion from yesterday’s post that asked the question of what we should be doing with the aforementioned players. The results of the polls embedded in the post showed that more than 60% of those who lodged an opinion were in favour of selling Mesut Ozil, and sending Smith-Rowe out on loan.

AA contributor Gooner4life summed it up as follows:

Having waited and hoped that Ozil would adapt to the Premier League’s athletic standards of fitness and commitment to enable a team structure that would benefit his skill set and enhance the teams resilience, I have seen that hope disappear much like Ozil himself in games. He is not strong enough or fast enough to impose himself on games or assist in stifling the opposition pressing our defenses.

The time for pastures new has arrived with a subsidised loan or even free transfer to allow his particular talents to be showcased in a less abrasive league. Ceballos Ghendouzi Willock Torreira are the go to options for a dynamic midfield (which can be supplemented by Luiz or Chambers – but NOT Xhaka).

ESR is one of a number of shining academy stars (many of whom shone through in the pre season fixtures) who have potential to become regular starters. Injuries have stifled his progression and others are presently seizing their opportunities so a loan to a competing league would be beneficial and he is already highly regarded in Germany without hardly playing.

ESR needs to be placed with a club who will develop his strength and resilience to complement his talent by starting him consistently (not bringing him off the bench when the game needs rescuing). We need to look within the club more often to nurture the wealth of talent that could have been in our team rather than looking at what £50+million stars they have become and could be saving those sums in the transfer market.

The first team squad is becoming a stronger and deeper and will provide an opportunity for bringing the youngsters into the premier league environment. This is already happening and needs to be continued.

As a clever German recently said North London is still red!
