Can we continue our Unbeaten Run?

Hull away under a strong caretaker manager is a potential banana-skin for our team as they struggle to discover form and identity. Are Arsenal good enough to leave The Kcom Stadium (really?) with three points?

Unknown.jpeg

I am always concerned about long  unbeaten runs and the fact that Arsenal have not lost an away fixture to Hull for 101 years frightens me, all runs end – sometimes with a diving Rooney. Before you get too excited we have only played 6 games over those years!

On paper we have a far better squad, man for man Arsenal inspire confidence but we know that individual quality does not equate to points, it is teamwork, cohesion, focus and above all clinical finishing which brings success.

Rumour has it that OG is not fit to start so there is likely to be a second start for Perez who must be hoping for a better afternoon than his ineffectual performance  last week.

My Team

Cech

Bellerin    Mustafa    Koscielny     Monreal

Xhaka    Elneny   Iwobi

Ozil   Sanchez

Perez

Formation? The Terry Venables Christmas Tree. Will not work like this in practice but looks good on paper!

It will be interesting to see whether the highly influential Cazorla is selected to play 3 games in a week especially with a CL game midweek. My guess is that we will play a more defensive midfield for an away fixture.

Will Hull cope with the pace and guile of our strikers? It is here where the game will be won. Our defence looks solid and will surely enter the pitch ready from the first whistle after the midweek lapse, so it is the goal scoring which needs to be addressed.

An oddity is that in the last three games between the clubs it has been 0-0 at halftime and there has been a goal after the 90th minute.

Can we win? Of course.

raddy – that is a brilliant stat – we have not lost to Hull away in 101 years 🙂 Very funny

Xhaka, Elneny, Iwobi – looks like a blind date in midfield. Dangerous experiment, doubt it very much Wenger would do that.

    thanks for the post.

  2. This one’s for Eddie..

  3. Eddie says:

plastic cockneys 🙂 I was thinking about your west coast salmon fishing – which west coast? West coast of New River Enfield?

Anyway, I am glad you are enjoying your stay in the worst country in the world. The longer you stay, the more games I might be attending 🙂 If the northern bastard lets me, of course

  4. mickydidit89 says:

    Love it, Erik.

That would be my First XI for all occasions

You say it’s defensive, and by that I’m guessing you mean pairing an Elneny and Xhaka, rather than including an Aaron/Santi sort, but I’d argue it frees up the good footballers to focus on trying to score without having too much of that defending nonsense

The same XI could equally take on a City, home or away, and just have to settle for the 2-0 rather than today’s 4-0

Bad news is that I will be bloody livid if that team starts as I’ll be in the car and on the radio!

  5. Eddie says:

google blurred cow’s face to protect her identity

  6. GoonerB says:

    Thanks Raddy, like the team.

  7. LB says:

    Thanks for the pre-match BR

Of the many reasons that I look forward to reading it the one that I usually enjoy the most is looking at your guess at Wenger’s team and wondering for a few interesting moments whether I agree. More often than not I vary slightly as I do today. I would add that I have not once guessed correctly this season but hey ho I still enjoy it.

    My guess at Wenger’s team

    ——————Cech

    Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal

    ——————-Xhaka

    ———–Cazorla———-Ozil

    —-Ox———-Perez———Sanchez

The only change I would make for my own preferred eleven is that I would swap Ox for Iwobi.

  8. LB says:

By the way can someone remind me who Charlie George is punching to the right of the screen I have forgotten his name?

  9. mickydidit89 says:

    Mick Mills?

  10. mickydidit89 says:

Ok, this is how Arsenalitis rules your life.

I have a five hour car journey, and need to arrive as early as possible without missing a minute of the game on the radio.

I reckon 11:45 would be the right time to set off 🙂

  11. mickydidit89 says:

So, LB, you reckon The Ox might start? 🙂

  12. LB says:

It’s become a pet project. Wenger could even persevere with Sanchez leading the line with Perez on the right and the Ox on the left. Should be interesting but I don’t think we will learn much.

  13. fred1266 says:

Great post BR, u had me chuckling when you said our defense look solid

  14. GunnerN5 says:

Morning all wherever you may be – it’s the day Arsenal play.

I like your team Raddy but I can’t see him starting with Xhaka, Cazorla and Perez. He seems to feel that both Xhaka and Perez need more time to assimilate.

  15. GunnerN5 says:

    Eddie,

How many times have you visited the “Worst country in the World” You must have had some very sad experiences to formulate that opinion.

  16. TotalArsenal says:

Fine starting 11, Raddinski and you may get close. Three well fought for points today would be bliss.

  17. GunnerN5 says:

    TEAM NEWS: Cech returns

Petr Cech returns to the Arsenal starting line up for today’s meeting with Hull City.

Arsène Wenger has made just one other change to the starting XI that drew 1-1 with PSG, with Theo Walcott coming back from injury to replace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Hector Bellerin and Nacho Monreal continue in the full back positions, while Alexis will once again spearhead the Arsenal attack.

Mohamed Elneny is among the substitutes, as are both Granit Xhaka and Lucas.

Arsenal team: Cech, Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal, Cazorla, Coquelin, Walcott, Ozil, Iwobi, Alexis

Arsenal substitutes: Ospina, Holding, Gibbs, Elneny, Xhaka, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lucas

  18. Big Raddy says:

Mmmm. 3 wrong in my team, only 8/11

No Xhaka or Elneny and Theo starts in place of Perez.

I want to see Xhaka start every game.

  19. GunnerN5 says:

Cazora and Coquelin appear to have cemented themselves in the mid-field, lets hope Coq doesn’t coq up. Walcott gets another run out – his time to shine must be very limited.

    Giroud must be injured?

  20. GunnerN5 says:

    Raddy,

Lets hope that both Elneny and Xkaka are patient types.

  21. GunnerN5 says:

Obviously Perez is not impressing AW in practice sessions.

  22. chas says:

    Cheers, Radster.
    Cmon You Gunners.

  23. LB says:

Well at least we got the back 5 right BR. Lol

  24. fred1266 says:

If our striker can’t play against hull something wrong

  25. fred1266 says:

From the time he didn’t go with Coq I knew his team selection was wrong lol

  26. JM says:

Thus far this season, AW is continuing to start with at least one British player in his first eleven line-up for every match (and not giving in to an all-foreign players starting line-up).

vs Liverpool (Chambers, Holding, Ramsey, Walcott)
vs Leicester (Holding, The Ox, Walcott)
vs Watford (Holding, The Ox, Walcott)
    vs Southampton (The Ox, Walcott)
    vs PSG (The Ox)
    vs Hull (Walcott)

    Game On.

  27. Big Raddy says:

I think that was a goal for Sanchez. We shall see.

  28. fred1266 says:

    Why Coq so far up

  29. Eddie says:

    that was harsh on Livermore

  30. Big Raddy says:

Why didn’t Santi take the penalty?????

  31. Big Raddy says:

Eddie. He stopped a goal scoring opportunity and it would have been a goal. If he had tripped Coq as the last man he would have seen red. It is the rules.

  32. Eddie says:

it was a handball though and you cannot be sure, ever, if it was deliberate. I need to see a better clip of it

  33. Big Raddy says:

OK half inasmuch as we are winning but ….

I spent much of that half saying FFS Theo.

I wanted clinical finishing – we should be at least 4 up we are not thanks to some desperate shooting.

But we are playing some sumptuous football with Iwobi looking a real find.

  34. Big Raddy says:

BTW. Where is everyone? Is it a sunny day in UK?

  35. fred1266 says:

Why we pass so badly in final third

  36. fred1266 says:

    Sunny In Trinidad

  37. Big Raddy says:

    Fred. That’s good news

  38. JM says:

Fresh legs should come on around the middle of 2nd half (Xhaka, Elneny and Lucas) to sustain pressing pressure. The effects from the midweek match vs PSG would be felt gradually and surely.

Hull could look to get a look in from dead ball situations (corners and free kicks) where the chances are even with numbers (of players) available at those times.

  39. Eddie says:

freezing cold in London, they are all under a duvet, plastic fans

  40. Big Raddy says:

Iwobi is just fantastic! Theo finally comes good – let’s hope he can continue to threaten

  41. fred1266 says:

    Time to get Santi of

  42. fred1266 says:

    Wonder what Ox thinking

  43. Big Raddy says:

Oh dear. A tense last 15 minutes I fear

  44. fred1266 says:

    Jeez 2 nil lead resume

  45. Eddie says:

Raddy – your comments today are rather badly timed 🙂

  46. fred1266 says:

We always concede when we make defensive subs

  47. Eddie says:

one more goal needed for the 2nd in the table

  48. Eddie says:

never mind what Ox is thinking, what I want to know is what happened to Hull?? No aggression, no cheating, no bus parking…what the hell got into them??

  49. fred1266 says:

Who pass the ball to theo he did the cross shot

  50. fred1266 says:

    They was parking the bus

  51. JM says:

Alright, all subs in (Xhaka, Elneny and Lucas). Time to close up match (and maybe more?).

  52. Eddie says:

    where did this come from??????

  53. JM says:

    Xhaka’s howitzer!

  54. Big Raddy says:

Lovely win with Xhaka’s goal the icing on the cake

  55. chas says:

  56. Big Raddy says:

Eddie. True. My comments preceded a goal by Theo and one conceded.

I still think Theo had a very frustrating game.

  57. LBG says:

Micky 7.00am – Just to clear up from early in your morning. The salmon in Half Moon Bay at this time of year are King Salmon on the way north to spawn. Both the two I caught, one of about 8lb and the monster, estimated at 25+lb were male salmon – as in no eggs.
Now to read the post having listened to the game. What a fine result!

  58. Rasp says:

Sorry to be plate to the party. Thanks for the PM Raddy, I know the result now, but I felt as you before the kickoff.

So it was a good 3 points, 3 added to the GD and 2nd in the league for the time being although we could be back down to 5th or 6th if later results don’t go our way.

I’m looking forward to MOTD so can’t pass any judgement on the performance – but to quote Brucie … what do points make?? 🙂

  59. fred1266 says:

Prefer theo over Ox all day

  60. LBG says:

Oh no Eddie, that’s your lot!! I’m back for the next home game.

The words “Walcott is a waste of space” were no sooner out of my mouth and he scored.

    Some quick thoughts.

    Iwobi was my MOM.
Cazorla and Coqulin are a superb combination.
Xhaka and Elneny also looked good.
    Cazorla should have seen red.
    Cazorla should take ALL penalties.
Xhaka reminds me of Bobby Moore.
Perez should start on Tuesday against Forest.
AW still leaves subbing too late.
Mustafi has settled in quickly and looks the part.
Xhaka scored an incredible goal, he will scare a lot of defenses.

  66. fred1266 says:

Mustafi defending reminding me of Gabriel

  67. Big Raddy says:

GN5. That could be tomorrows match report!

  68. Big Raddy says:

A heat map for Micky. AFC on right, Hull left.

  69. Eddie says:

LBG – why??? why don’t you stay in US? It is dismal here, bad weather, place crawling with nasty foreigners, the economy is just about to go tits up, politicians are all gay and on coke, and the only people who want to be here are kept in camps in France!! Stay where you are mate, I will look after your seat and your brothers

  70. LB says:

    Excellent Eddie.

  71. chas says:

    I’m scared

  72. LBG says:

Don’t be scared Chas. I would no more stay here and leave my seats to the Wenger out posterior than I would vote Tory!
Looking forward to restoring the status quo in less than a week! Breathe easy Nottingham Gooners.

  73. LBG says:

Chas, thank you so much for extended highlights. It seems to be all or nothing here! Saw the PSG in full but not a sausage of Hull game. Perhaps they have a highlights but it will be two old by then!

  74. LBG says:

    “days”

  75. wally says:

    Nice game, nice win.
Iwobi is certainly dynamic isn’t he.
Didn’t learn much about the team tho. We’ll learn more from the chelsea match. Looking forward to it.

  76. fred1266 says:

Gnabry score a nice goal today

  77. chas says:

  78. TotalArsenal says:

Eddie at 7.35, what a disgusting comment, even if it is meant to be tongue in cheek, which I am not sure about. You should know better.

  79. LB says:

New post, a bit short but I am off to Suffolk for a Barby.

  80. Big Raddy says:

    Morning All,

Life is just better after a win.
