A Manchester team will win the EPL and we will finish in the top 3. Fair prediction?

Following some unsavory refereeing decisions going against us and some individual mistakes giving some goals and games away, it seems to be fair to say that we have lost our edge in the EPL race and that we are back to being a chasing team rather than a chased team when it comes to the EPL crown…

Yesterday’s display for a large part of the game was sensational but it was undone by 3 gifted goals against arguably the best team in the EPL…Of course, we have a game in hand but the way we are playing (and the refs are sanctioning us) with a bit less intensity and luck than in the first 19 games of the same make me clearly think that we may not have reached “EPL Champion” level yet…

Besides Man City, I am extremely worried about Man Utd. They are playing really well and may even pip finish in the top 2…

However, I am feeling confident for a Top 3 finish, which we would have all welcome at the beginning of the season…

I am a bit worried about our full backs and clearly, we can’t afford not to play Partey although Jorginho was not bad yesterday…

I can’t wait to see him back in our team and I am sure that ESR and G. Jesus will also add to our ability to win games. We really need them. We also need a more decisive F.Vieira – when Ode is struggling, we need more from him when he comes in.

Anyways, let us fight for a top 3 finish and if somehow, we are still within reach of the EPL crown with 5 games to go, then we can dream again. Until then, let us focus on winning games by hook, crook or luck…

Ramsdale – White, Saliba, Gabs, Zinchenko – Partey, Xhaka – Saka, Ode, Martinelli – Nketiah

Tuerney – Tomy, Holding, Kiwior, Tierney – Jorginho, Vieira – Trossard, ESR, R. Nelsson – Jesus

Best EPL Team at the moment with at least 15 games played:

Pope – Trippier, Mee, Martinez, Robertson – Rodri, Partey – Saka, De Bruyne, Rashford – Haaland

  2. Silentstan says:

Vieira is a failure sadly. Far too light weight.
Up front Nketiah is championship standard.
Partey Xhaka are very good but title winning standard? Nah
Full backs are ok but not quite it are they.
Martinelli seems everyone’s favourite except mine . He delivers far too little and is predictable and easily dealt with by the good teams
We are fighting for 3rd. At best.

  3. RC78 says:

    F. Vieira – too early to judge but so far, not brought much to the team…
Nketiah – He is EPL ready. He is doing well but not a Top 6 EPL striker yet…Will he get there?
Partey-Xhaka – Again, not the best double pivot in the league but they are playing Top 4 level this year.
Full-Backs – At RB, White and Tomy are Top 8 and at LB, Zinchenko an Tierney are Top 6.

Martinelli – Indeed, he needs to work on his final product but the kid is good, like really good. I think he can be a Top 10 LFW world wide. He is quick, he dribbles well and he is got a good shot in him.

I think we are indeed fighting for a Top3 spot but I believe we shouldn’t be too critical of our team and players.

The worst we’d finish is 2nd. Take that to the bank.
Manchester United may be playing well at the moment, but they will drop points here and there.
Top 2 and Europa League title would send me screaming with joy. A good foundation to build on with a very young team which can only get better.

  5. RC78 says:

Amen to that CorporateMan and truly hope you are right…I think we will finish 3rd and will not go beyond the semi-finals in the Europa League with a good chance to lose in the 1/4…

  6. RC78 says:

Asensio may be free this summer…A solid back-up plan to Saka…

    Partey, Jorginho
    RICE, Xhaka

    Saka, ASENSIO
    Ode, ESR, Vieira
    Martinelli, Trossard

    Jesus, Nketiah, Balogun (?)

Yes, we lost to City but we still haven’t played them with our best team; we were missing our best two players: Jesus and Partey, imagine City playing without Harland and De Bruyne last night, who do you think would have won?

  8. LB says:

I’ve got Jesus’s return penciled in for Easter Monday.

  9. LB says:

So embarrassing the plastic bottle thrown at De Bruyne, thought we were above that.

  10. Gööner In Exile says:

LB, thanks for the welcome back a couple of days back.

Jesus’ return Easter Weekend ….. your wit has not dulled.

I enjoyed watching Wednesdays game, it was good to see where we are and where we need to get to and realising it is only small changes needed and a bit of experience.

A bit of experience would have had Ramsdale, Gabriel and Saliba going a bit longer when City were pressing high in the ten minute spell before they scored the second. We were inviting pressure and whilst I know it is how Arteta asks them to play sometimes the players need to take that little bit of responsibility. Five to ten minutes of turning the City midfield and asking Eddie, Odegaard, Saka and Martinelli to chase some 50:50s wouldn’t have been the end of the world.

There were plenty of times the ball went back to Ederson and he just went long and diagonal.

The indecision/hesitation at key moments, Saka (although probably would have been offside) had one, Xhaka had another.

City sat on Odergaard and were prepared to sacrifice a man to do that. When you have the talent they do you can do that.

Tomiyasu. Even before his assist for De Bruyne there were a multitude of underhit passes inside before that. Someone needed to have a word in his shell like because it was only a matter of time.

All that said I thought we had the better of the first half, the penalty was soft but a penalty nonetheless, I’ve always said refs apply different rules in the area for no good reason. Compare to a player clearing the ball from defence, if a forward runs through him it would be a foul. There is and should be no difference just because it’s in the area.

I was glad we came it at 1-1 as we deserved that for our efforts and how we were approaching the game.

  11. LB says:

It was a bizarre decision to go with Tomiyasu in that game; we have been crying out for him to add to our attacking thrust with his overlaps against the teams that set up in a very defensive way: Newcastle, Everton and Brentford but not against City, that was the game we needed all the strong defensive qualities of Ben White.

  12. LB says:

It’s time to change Xhaka; he has been superb but he has gone off the boil; he is not cutting it up front anymore. The purpose of an 8 is to add goal threat and no such threat is coming, this may be down to Jesus being missing but it is what it is and it is time to move Zinchenko further up.

  13. LB says:

    White, –Saliba, Gabriel, –Tomiyasu/Tierney

The side I would like to see tomorrow.
