I’m still buzzing from PSG qualifying into the CL 1/4 finals (although anxious that the competition will be cancelled due to Covid-19) and going down the PSG memory lane remembering of times when in the 90s, we had players like Rai that helped us beat teams like Real Madrid, I thought that it would be fun to look back at the Arsenal Invincibles team especially since Liverpool cannot match our feat anymore…What a team we had!
So I asked myself the question, if I could recruit one player from our Invincibles team (took the players with the most played games in the EPL so no Edu or Parlour or Wiltod), who would it be and why?
Lehmann – Lauren, Toure, Campbell, Cole – Freddie, Vieira, Silva, Pires – Bergkamp, Henry
The obvious choices maybe Lehmann – Campbell – Vieira – Henry but Pires was just phenomenal that year and our defense was hard to break and given the state of our defense, shouldn’t we directly upgrade our RB or LB?
It is hard to tell and I am looking forward to your answers. Remember, the angle is not “who you liked best” from the Invicibles team but which player would improve us the most and address our most pressing weaknesses?
I will share with you my views a bit later as I do not want to influence your opinion 😛
RC78
Keep safe / Stay at least one meter away and ideally 4.5 meters from anyone coughing… / wash your hands every hour minimum with soap and if you go out, wash your hands every time (20 seconds minimum)
Good luck everyone
Am voting for Vieira because we need his leadership and also he is an upgrade to our current midfielders both on defensive and attacking angles
Leno – Bellerin, Mustafi, Luiz, Tierney – Ceballos, VIEIRA – Pepe, Laca (or Ozil), Saka – Auba
Vieara
Patrice Viera: because we still lack a strong holding mudfielder whocan command the field. He even had leadership qualities that we lack now.
It’s paddy all day long.have u seen the state of our non existent midfield? The worst in living memory.
It’s paddy all day long.have u seeen the state of our embarrassing midfield? The worst in living memory.oh for a Viera, whoa viera ,whoa..
Good post RC, Patrick Vieira, because in his position during his peak years he was the best in the world.
You’d probably be looking at £150m+ to sign a similar player of his ability today.
Cliff Bastin. He – if anybody – was an Invincible. The WW2 stole at least a hundred goals from that man. He would have end up att 250. The Best Gunner Ever. Go Asn’l!
Vieira is the obvious choice, but I’m going to buck the trend and say…
BIG SOL
“Where’s your captain gone, where’s your captain gone…”
Let’s say ALIKO DANGOTE is buying Arsenal this autumn or next spring for £2 billion and you get half a billion to buy players for… This is my team: Leno – Kurzawa, Upamecano, Saliba, Tierney – Soler, Partey, Kokcu, van de Beek – Mbappe, Aubameyang. I guess I could have bought more expensive guys on some places, but I wanted to take those players that have appeared on NewsNow (+ the little extra).
Either Vieira or Campbell would be the biggest upgrade over what we currently have.
Vieira, if I had to choose.
PL suspended until April 3rd….
My second pick was Lauren and my third Lehmann.
Lehmann – Lauren, Mustafi, Luiz, Tierney – Ceba, Tierney – Pepe, Laca, Saka – Auba
I d have more confidence in conceding less chances and goals
It s funny how many ppl picked Paddy already
I choose Gilberto “the invisible wall” Silva, who played 32 league matches (as well as scoring 4 goals and providing 3 assists, while accumulating only 2 yellow cards, for a DM!) in our unbeaten season 2003-2004.
He was the one who positions himself between our 2 CBs and the rest of midfield (Vieira, Pires, Ljungberg), brilliant in breaking up opposition attacks through man-marking, shadowing players, intercepting plays.
With Gilberto in our current squad, we could play any combinations of midfielders in front/beside him, knowing our backline is well protected.
Examples:
defensive (Gilberto, Torreira + 1 other)
offensive (Gilberto, Özil, Ceballos)
balanced (Gilberto, Xhaka + 1 other)
with youngsters (Gilberto, Willock, Guendouzi)
Whoa, Vieira!!
Clever post.
I think Vieira is going to run away with this.
Vieira for me. Just his presence on the field would be enough to lift the confidence of the rest of the team.
Bergkamp
Leno
Bellerin-Mustafi-Mari-Tierney
—-—-Luiz–Xhaka———-
Ozil——-Bergkamp—–Saka
—————-Auba—————-
Who has a Vieira these days? And who would not love a Bergkamp?
“Who has a Vieira these days?”
That is a really thought provoking question…….
Thanks for the post RC … a clever question.
I like to be different but since Vieira is my favourite Arsenal player, it has to be him … although I like the idea of Gilberto too.
What a question! There is only ONE player who would change the entire season in joining the team: Thierry Henry.
Do I have to explain why?
Viera
If EPL is shutdown then no title for Liverpool, lol
Being me, I`m going to think outside the box and the one from The Invincibles “Team” to our current “Team” would be………………………..David Dein.
LCM -> touche :-), well played
Rumour mill:
– Arteta keen on Atletico’s Ghanaian midfielder Partey. 45 Mln Pnds.
– Arteta also monitoring Jota and Jimenez from Wolves
– Arsenal on alert as Koulibaly’s price is down to 70 Mln
– Arsenal also keen to bolster full-back options with Pererira, Cancelo, Hakimi and Mukiele catching the club’s attention.
Everyone ok?
Brussels is very quiet…Today was unusually sunny and rather warm so in normal times, streets would have been very busy…
Keep safe everyone.
French passenger told me Paris is deserted, only 7 passengers on his Eurostar railway carriage to St Pancras.
London is like a ghost town.
looks like everyone at the AA office has gone home until further notice
Bergkamp for me. We have goals in this side, we just lack somebody to set them up through the middle and take a poke. Dennis is your man!
Thanks RC, understandably quiet on here and I haven’t been about much recently.
You could go through just about the whole team right now and the invincible in their position would improve us. Campbell, Gilberto, Vieira, Bergkamp, Henry e.t.c, would all be 1st choice before current incumbents.
I therefore had to decide where the biggest differential was in a key position, where we have most lacked. For instance TH14 and DB10 would replace Auba/ Laca and Ozil respectively but the current players aren’t so far behind those illustrious past ones as we see in one other position.
I had to arrive at Vieira as many others have because I just think it is that type of player we are most missing right now that would make the biggest points gain if he were playing.
Based on the responses and Arteta’s last line-ups, we would have the following line-up:
Leno – Bellerin, Mustafi, Luiz, Saka – Ceballos, VIEIRA – Pepe, Ozil, Auba – Laca
Bench: Martinez, Sokratis, Mari, Campbell, Tierney, Xhaka, Bergkamp, Henry
Sporting Director: Dein
sorry – replace Xhaka by Gilberto Silva
So what’s everyone doing to fill the big hole that resides now that football (and sport in general) is cancelled?
Me, I’m doing DIY and trying to finish my bathroom that I started before my now 1 yr old was born lol.
And wouldn’t it be funny if Liverpool didn’t get the title this year afterall.
@Peaches – sent a new post
Hi seedeee.. catching up with Netflix (hurrah!) and the odd movie too… I know what’s happened has happened… but that was so weird with no football over the weekend…. twiddling my thumbs at one point!! Better get used to it!
Do you know what, I’m sick of hearing everyone moaning about poor old Liverpool… ah they’re so hard done by, it’s been 30 years blah blah blah….omg pass the sick bucket… I say give it to them – I don’t want to have to hear about that for the rest of my life as well 😂 (even though they haven’t won it yet)
I am feeling an increasing lack of interest in football, especially this season which became a non-entity for me during the first few months when Emery was single-handedly destroying what Wenger had built up, leaving us with a shadow of a team, which has not recovered that much under Arteta.
I will be very glad to see the end of this season, which I expect to be announced in the next few days.
I do not really care if LiVARpool get the title or not.
It just seems irrelevant.
I visit the blogs that I visited before, not because of any football input, as there is really none, but just to keep in touch with people
who, although I have never met and will, most probably never meet, have a like interest in a team that I have supported for nearly 60 years.
May you all keep well.
Thank you RC, I’ll have to sort it later.
@Jigsol I feel your sentiment. It’s been an odd season for sure.
@Peaches I can drop you a reminiscing piece on an Arsenal game of years gone by if you need some content….maybe the trip to Anfield ’89. What a glorious evening that was!
Apparently Ceballos keen to stay with us in the end and Real open to a 40 mln EUR sale.
Who says we will have £40 so spend let alone 40m euros?
The whole transfer and, I suspect, wages market, will be completely changed.
I think the gravy train will stop now.
Morning all
We have New Post …………….
