Saints Alive! – Mesut starts again?

Since David Wagner took over at Southampton in December, they’ve won 4, lost 4 and drawn 3 in the league. Their victories included our dreadful performance at St Mary’s when the bounce effect of a new manager was in full force. Under Mark Hughes they were tending to draw or get battered, so it was definitely the correct thing to do to get rid of such a loathsome specimen, since it looked very likely he would have taken them down.

They still sit in the bottom three but are vying to escape that third relegation spot with 5 other teams only a couple of points above them. That’s assuming Fulham and Huddersfield are doomed. We must ensure they get no points from their trip to The Home of Football to help with their fight against relegation.

Team news

Kos is a doubt after his knock against Bate but as a replacement, Big Sok fills me with confidence – even when paired with Shirley. (If anyone is offended by the gentle ribbing of Shkodran’s abilities, then please don’t be as he is as important as any other member of the squad and has given us some outstanding performances already this season). There still appear to be some doubts about Mavro’s fitness but this has been difficult to confirm.

Will Mesut retain a starting place? That is the burning issue team selection-wise. Unai was quick to suggest that Mesut isn’t guaranteed a starting spot after Thursday’s win. Perhaps Ramsey will be asked to play in the free role again. It’s the sixty four thousand dollar question.

Up front Laca will be itching to get back into the action. I’d imagine he’ll start in the next few Prem games while Auba is wrapped in cotton wool for the Rennes tie as our only eligible senior striker. Wobbly should keep his place as he’s been one of our outstanding recent performers. Maybe Denis Suarez could get a start to replace Micki who’s been looking a little jaded? It would be great to see what he can do when he plays for longer than 15 minutes.

Team news update – according to Jeorge Bird on twitter, both Kos and A.M-N were in full training on Saturday, so both could start. Eddie Nk also trained with the first team.

Possible Team

……………………….Leno

…Licht…….Shirley……Papa……Nacho

………….Terrier ……..Granit

…………………..Ramsey

Suarez…………..Laca………..Wobbly

Our home form is good in the League, unbeaten in 12 – including six wins on the bounce in our last half a dozen.

Score predictions in the comments, please (as it drew a few on Thursday).

Another strong performance in front of the Emirates unfaithful, please lads.

Another quality, ” early morning”, post Chas.
Interesting possible team selection. Although I would be most comfortable with Kos playing every game instead of Mustafi, that is clearly not possible. As an additional problem this is a watershed week for me with fixtures. I think the Bournemouth game is even more difficult than today’s, and on balance would play him Wed and hope he’s still OK for Totteringham. Six points, however obtained, from Saints and Bournemouth is priority for me.
Agree, ” give Suarez a chance” although Micky has been good in first twenty mins each time recently. Litch instead of A M-N is a toss up for me.
All very exciting for me, especially as the Boys Are Back In Town, and, unusually for me, I am going to nervously predict 2-1 today. Who’s the ref?

  3. mickydidit89 says:

    Thanks Chas

Very minor point if you’re stilll around, you meant Laca in the line up, not Auba

Suarez is an interesting choice. Clearly Unai sees something in the fella or he wouldn’t have loaned him in. I suppose only playing time will tell. I’d have thought more time coming off the bench, but maybe

    Have a great day out

  4. LB says:

    Thanks Chas

Shirley? How does this one fit?

  5. PE says:

That’s a good team but I suspect Emery to keep easing-in Suarez from the bench. Kola in his place which usually means a back 3.

    —————Leno.
    —-Musti Sokr Nacho.
    Licht Terre Xhaka Kola
    ——–Ramsey Iwobi
    —————–Laca.

Just based on the Law of Averages … we’d keep a clean sheet. 2-0 to the good guys.

  6. LB says:

Although I probably should make clear that I am not one of those sensitive souls who feels the need to get all protective over Mustafi.

    Morning Girls, 😂

You have got the Post making down to a fine art, Chas!

    My prediction; Gunners 1 : 23 S/Hampton

  9. RA says:

And there is cheeky chappie, Ant, maintaining a cherished Vine Family tradition, altho that looks suspiciously like a fruity fizz drink! 🤩

I think I can see a reflection of Chas in his glasses!
All is well — Ant and Duck are on the case. Yay — could we win?

  10. Bdumtish says:

    David Wagner-> Ralph Hasenhüttl

  11. RA says:

Something I find —- weird —- is that I read that some Arsenal fans have been saying Mustafi is better than Dick van Dyke!

Gordon Bennet — Arsene never had a chance with fan judgement like that. Perhaps if he had worn giant shoes, baggy, check trasis, a bowler hat and a big red nose while falling over a lot he could have stayed. 😋

  12. RA says:

No — Rafe Hasenshlottl is David Waghem in disguise. 🤩

‘Shirley’ comes from one of mine and Micky’s stupid early morning conversations.

He was talking about gender swapping and hat South African athlete Caster Semenya (sp). He though MustafI could have a good career in women’s football. All he’d have to do was change his name to Shirley. Maybe shift the beard but , then again, maybe not.

It appears to have worked for LBG.

  16. Ant says:

RA- that was deffo not a totally fruity drink, citrus ipa

  17. LBG says:

And if it works for LBG, it’ll work for anyone even you Fred.

  18. Ant says:

Are you snorkelling and sunbathing today Fred?

  19. Ant says:

We might have to go to the Worlds End today LBG as it’s before 12 and FFb not normally open then

  20. chas says:

Fred’s got his iPad set up on the beach with its own umbrella

  21. Ant says:

And a bevy of beauties at his beck and call

  22. chas says:

  23. Ant says:

    I’m going for 2-1

  24. Ant says:

Bloated …..after 4 beers, a yoghurt, almond crunch, vegetable meatball tiger roll, crisps and nuts, tea and wotsits..but the hip flask will sort me out

  25. Ant says:

    Ohh and pain au chocolate

  26. chas says:

Dat chocolat give me dem big pain

  27. Ant says:

One of the trolley dollies was a friendly northern girl but we also had a surly bloke..typical

  28. chas says:

Ahhh, friendly northern girls. Those were the days.

  29. chas says:

I reckon we’re going to lash them.
    1-0

  30. RA says:

Now that looks more like the sort of Vines drinky-poohs at breakfast that one expects to see!

Umm the last part of drinky-poohs might not set the correct tone. Hope you bring a warning bell with you to assist other innocent passengers, and a sign saying “5 minutes might not be enough” 🤪

Especially the ‘pain in the chocolate’ might be of some concern.

  31. chas says:

I’d give it the full half hour

  32. John Mathews legend says:

    S’about time we thumped someone….
4-1, if we play with a back four.

  33. RA says:

Northern girls can be reet nice like.

Their accents can be slightly difficult to understand at first — I lost count of the times I was told ‘you’ve put yer big calumphers rite init there” – or something like that.

Usually having made a social gaffe like telling some bloke who saw me looking at a lovely girl and saying “wow, I wouldn’t mind”. and her girl friend saying the (above) “you’ve put etc” as he was her fiancé – or summat. 😎

  34. Ant says:

8-1 if we play with a back 3

  35. Ant says:

We’re nearly in London so be back later..

  36. Ant says:

    I like a nice calumpher

  37. RA says:

Thanks for the tip about Word Press gravatar but I refuse to be bullied — and won’t let them beat me because of their crap system.

But hats off to you for trying to help. 👨🏼‍🌾

  38. LBG says:

Will check World’s End first. Look out for a big red blob.

  39. Rasp says:

Great work chas, thank you. Good to see Ant getting in the match day swing … I’d be on a bench somewhere fast asleep if I’d consumed that lot!

As far as the game is concerned, it’s another MW with the totts losing and the possibility of the mancs dropping points. The games against those two will be pivotal in our hopes for top 4.

Today it will be all about taking those early chances we create … if we do, I can see another 3 nil … if not a nervy 2:1 (to us in both cases)

  40. Red Arnie says:

Brilliant, Chas. 🙂 Time to look forward to 4th place trophy. COYG. 🙂

    Brilliant touring Vines party. 🙂

I made a few comments in the past few days, but WordPress threw these out. Hope this one goes through.

  41. LB says:

Mustafi —– Caster Semanya ——- Shirley——- Brilliant 🙂

  42. RA says:

    Hi Arnie, 😃

A number of us have been having problems with accessing the site, some people have had probs with their mobile phones, others with their laptops etc.

Chas has suggested that opening up a Word Press gravatar these problems are remedied.

If you want to do that, just click on the W icon of WP between the comment square and the address/name detail.

    Good luck.

  43. RA says:

I carried out a check on my system — you know, clicking on the browser ‘preferences’ and checked website management and also the privacy/passwords sections, and found a couple of passwords that I had not authorised?? Probably from clicking a link on NewsNow.

I removed them and all seems OK 👍 for the moment. Weird!!

  44. GunnerN5 says:

Wonderful post Chas, good to see you back on the wagon train to Arsenal accompanied by the very able Ant.

I’m extremely jealous, it’s not quite the same watching the game on my own in the den at 9:00am.

    I opt for a squeaky 2-0 win.

  45. RA says:

    Arnie,

I have also been banging on about a very dubious WP advert —-> in a blue box – shown twice on AA, (AUTOMATTIC) which is a code writing part of WP — and I have my doubts about that too.

There is something not right with this.

  46. GunnerN5 says:

Three good games this morning but they overlap so I’m watching Arsenal v Saints and recording Man U v Liverpool,

The City v Chelsea game starts during the Man U v Liverpool game so when the City game starts on DAZN I’ll watch that on the computer while watching the end of the Man U game on the TV – sorted I see all three.

  47. RA says:

    Hi, GN5,

And it is even worse not being able to watch Arsenal at all in the UK, as it is not being shown, as the TV companies have picked the Carabao Cup and a top 4 game instead.

I will not be watching those either. 🥺

  48. TotalArsenal says:

Leno, Lichtsteiner, Sokratis, Mustafi, Kolasinac, Torreira, Xhaka, Mkhitaryan, Ramsey, Iwobi, Lacazette

No Ozil, but at least we are with Tor-Xhaka in the Double DM-Pivot. Iwobi to score. 1-0 to the Arse.

  49. GunnerN5 says:

We generally get all of the games RA but they are split between TV and and computer apps – but at least we get them, I’m off to tune into our game.

  50. Red Arnie says:

Thank you, Redders. So far so good. 🙂

  51. Red Arnie says:

3-0 to The Arsenal. 🙂 COYG

  52. fred1266 says:

    Orange juice ants lol

  53. RA says:

    Fred,

These Orange Juice ants – are they poisonous? Or any good at cricket?

Also Frederick, don’t say anything to either Ant or Duck — theynbare very boozed by now, and think that is a full screen photo of themselves, from top to toe!

    Sssh!! 🤪

  54. RA says:

Glad things are OK, Arnie, with your WP access/gravatar.

    Nice to see you. 😀

  55. RA says:

Thanks for the team news, TA, and good afternoon, sir.

I just do not understand all this bowlocks about Mesut — it is beginning to get me antsy.

[No that is not a special type of ant – Fred.] 😎

  56. RA says:

I knew the Grape Vines would bring us the sort of performance we wanted!! 2 : 0 🤩

  57. RA says:

He can’t hear you, Fred! 😁

  58. Ant (not duck) says:

  59. LBG says:

Best first half for five years at the Emirates. Mustafi 7, until he went to right back. Xhaka 7 despite one ridiculous pass. Should have had six.

  60. Ant says:

    No it’s Duck Fred

  61. Ant says:

Fred- Chas says you’ve got your own blog but there’s not many words on it apart from lol
    😂

  62. fred1266 says:

No am not just have that as I signed up when wordpress

  63. RA says:

    lol + Ants

  64. Ant says:

    Orange juice ants lollipops

  65. jjgsol says:

I have been watching the last 15 minutes or so of the carabao final and Chel$ki have outplayed Man$ity and, but for a suspect offside flag at the death, may very well have won.

What I have seen is how dirty the Man$ity players are, how many times they foul an opponent as soon as he gets the better of him.

I suppose that is part of the Pep way.

    I have been very impressed.

  66. LBG says:

    Jigsol
    Impressed with Chelski, surely not!!!
Watch them win on penalties now.

  67. LBG says:

    Ant and Duck
Glad we didn’t have to watch two piss poor boring games this aft, and Instead had our quality performance to revel in.

  68. LBG says:

Incredible situation at Wembley, Chelski GK refuses to be substituted. Sarri incandescent.

  69. LBG says:

Sterling scores decisive penalty against the racist boys of West London.

  70. fatgingergooner says:

We have 11 games left in the league. If we lose 7 and draw 1 we would still equal last seasons points total. I thought last season was bad but I didn’t think it was that bad! 😂

  71. allezkev says:

Thought that Leno made some important saves at crucial times, that clean sheet was very much down to him.

  72. mickydidit89 says:

Great weekend of sun and excellent results

Managed to watch about 25 mins of first half, including second goal and we looked terrific

  73. Big Raddy says:

    Morning All,

Back from manoevres … top secret …. hush hush …. nods as good etc etc.

I am up to write a match report, my first for some time.

Carabao was dreadful apart from the last minute shenanigans

  74. mickydidit89 says:

    Great news, Erik

  75. Big Raddy says:

    There is a New Post
