Arsenal 2017/18 Squad

Now that the summer transfer window has closed here is our First Team Squad as shown on Arsenal.com.

Now here is the Academy squad.

I’m not and expert on either squad formation or tactics, all I can intelligently discuss is my opinion of the players skills, attitude and team contribution based on viewing them during televised games. But nonetheless I would enjoy an open dialogue on the merits of this squad.

  1. Rasp says:

    Great work GN5, thank you.

I’m useless at knowing rules etc … can players be drafted in and out of the squad to play in the EPL does anyone know?

I’d have liked to seen the likes of Reis Nelson, Bielik and Willock given a chance this season.

  2. Rasp says:

One small point, we’ve taken a risk only listing 2 keepers and sending Martinez out on loan. I seem to recall he played several games for us when Cech and Ospina were both crocked in recent seasons.

  3. fred1266 says:

Another one I can barely keep up, really nice to see the sight so active

  4. RC78 says:

The squad is geared towards challengings for Cups and Top 6 finish
We are still light in terms of quality at RB, CB, DM

With this squad, I am hoping that:
    – AW gives a real shot at the Europea League;
    – AW prioritizes the FA Cup;
    – AW rotates in the EPL;
    – AW keeps the League Cup as a growth field for academy players.

We can’t compete with Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and may be slighly above Everton and West Ham in terms of squad depth/quality. As a result, let us make the EL our priority – I think that this trophy will get our star players’ juices flowing (Cech, Kos, Ramsey, Cazorla, Ozil, Sanchez, Giroud) as it is a European trophy after all and if we do this, then we can definitely play other players in the EPL for some games. Against Watford or Burnley, I am happy to play:
Ospina – Debuchy, Holding, BFG, Monreal – El Neny, Coq, Wilshere – Iwobi – Walcott, Wellbeck

  5. RC78 says:

For the League Cup, you can play

    – Holding, Bielik, Jeff, Maitland, Willock and Akpom as long as you also field the likes of Ospina, BFG, Xhaka, Giroud

Ospina – Debuchy, Holding, BFG, Monreal – Maitland, Bielik, Xhaka – Jeff, Giroud, Akpom

  6. GunnerN5 says:

    Wenger on Cazorla

Midfielder Santi Cazorla has not played for Arsenal since limping out of a Champions League game against Ludogorets in October with an ankle injury. He had surgery in December.

“He had his first run today. The mobility of his ankle looks good, now it is about getting back to full fitness without suffering another problem. It is difficult to predict when he will be available again – but it will not be before Christmas.”

  7. Rasp says:

How we’ve missed Santi .. our midfield maestro. I got all excited when I saw his name on the list. Naively I’m still hoping Jack can come back and fulfil that role.

  8. GunnerN5 says:

Rasp they are two of my favourite players, they display skill, energy, passion, and non stop commitment. Plus they both love the Arsenal.

Oh how we have missed them, injuries have decimated so many of AW’s teams and have been a contributing factor on us missing out on a few EPL titles.

  9. Rasp says:

Very true GN5. I think Jack is the architect of some of his own problems in as much as he has to learn when not to jump into a strong tackle to protect himself from further injury … but I always remember his performance in the 2:1 defeat of Barca at the Ems …. Cesc said he was the best player on the pitch that night.

  10. GunnerN5 says:

Here is the 25 man squad Arsenal submitted to the FA. Unfortunately Santi is not listed.

In the next comment I will show the Under 21 players submitted.

  12. GunnerN5 says:

There are many superb players in the under 21 group, it would be great to hear from anybody that attends their games and maybe they can give us their views.

  13. chas says:

    Cheers, GN5.

Today’s Santi news from the manager is that he wouldn’t be ready before Christmas, hence his exclusion. Maybe if his rehab goes well he can be included in January.

  19. GunnerN5 says:

Super images Chas – but it seems that posting actual evidence of the extent of anti Arsenal news in the media may not be to everybody’s taste!

  20. Big Raddy says:

    45 players in the U21’s!

Hope they aren’t all on 10k a week.

  21. GunnerN5 says:

Raddy at their age I would do it for nothing – just to gain the experience of Arsenal training and coaching.

I don”t even know if trainees are paid – are they?

  22. GunnerN5 says:

    Sanity has prevailed.

Premier League clubs have voted to close the summer transfer window before the first game of next season.

The 2018 window will close on the Thursday August 9, two days before the first match of the next campaign, and the new rule applies only to buying players.

Premier League clubs will still be able to sell players to other leagues whose transfer windows remain open later into August and September.

The transfer window for the English Football League also remains unaffected, with clubs able to sell to lower division sides unless the EFL decides to bring its window in line with the top flight. The January transfer window remains unaffected.

  23. Big Raddy says:

That makes much sense. Unusual for football authorities

  24. Big Raddy says:

Remarkable similarity between Mark Twain and Mr Didit. Take away the moustache and they could be twins.

  25. Eddie says:

GN5 @ 4:52 – did you mean me? ha ha ha 🙂 look GN5, chas and I hate each other’s guts and he would go to great lengths to prove me wrong. I may even try to lose some sleep over it 🙂

Look on the bright side, it’s not a big deal that Spurs or Pool won nothing in yonks, they are not top class clubs. We are top club and therefore it is uncomprehensible that we won 3 trophies in 13 years (or something like that) and no major trophies of course, otherwise things would be tickety boo again. Good night

  27. Big Raddy says:

    Morning All,

6.20. The Good Old Days. Double wins, Cups aplenty. David Bowie. Little Feat. etc etc

  28. Big Raddy says:

From the first team squad – 1.37.

    Who is Deyan Iliev?

  29. mickydidit89 says:

    Gn5 again. Thanks.

    Morning all

Look like Mark Twain then, do I Cassanova? 🙂

  30. mickydidit89 says:

Ok, I see the transfer window will close two days before first game

    Very sensible idea

At least we can get our last minute deals not done before business opens 🙂

  31. Eddie says:

you don’t know? here is the same girl

  32. Eddie says:

    sorry, wrong paste

  33. mickydidit89 says:

That’s not easy on the eye Eddie

Us motningers like gentle starts to our days

  34. Eddie says:

    shocked me too micky
Such a beautiful girl turned into a fat tattooed whale, awful

  35. mickydidit89 says:

    Oh dear God, Skinhead O’Connor!!!!

  36. mickydidit89 says:

Any chance of shoehorning Iwobi into tomorrow’s starting XI

  37. Zee says:

    Good Morning,

Good work again, GN5, altho I was disappointed not to be able to show my limited knowledge and say the AFC squad list shown in the Post did not make much sense, as it included players under the age of 21 and they do not need to be registered with the PL or Uefa for the EPL and Europa leagues respectively.

Your later comment on the declared squads ruined that moment of glory for me! 😀

Some of the names on the list are frankly a disappointment [maybe just to me] because they should have gone long ago.

In answer to Rasper’s question – the EPL squads need to be registered with the PL at the end of August (in line with the transfer window) and so do clubs in the European competitions such as the 48 clubs in the Europa League, and the squads are approved by UEFA.

Each squad, in each competition can then be amended and changed in January of the following year, again to allow for transfer window players bought/sold.

On top of that, the HGRs allow any number of Under 21’s to play for their respective clubs in the PL, and do not need to be included in the club squad lists.

The Arsenal 42 man squad approved by UEFA for the Group stages starting on the 14th September against Cologne [Koln] includes no less that 14 U21s; as under.

    Goalkeepers

David Ospina, Petr Cech, Deyan Iliev, Matt Macey, Ryan Huddart, Hugo Keto

    Defenders

Mathieu Debuchy, Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny, Rob Holding, Nacho Monreal, Shkodran Mustafi, Calum Chambers, Hector Bellerin, Sead Kolasinac, Toljai Bola, Chiori Johnson, Tafari Moore

    Midfielders

Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Mesut Ozil, Granit Xhaka, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Francis Coquelin, Mohamed Elneny, Krystian Bielik, Charlie Gilmour, Marcus McGuane, Reiss Nelson, Ben Sheaf

    Forwards

Alexis Sanchez, Alexandre Lacazette, Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott, Danny Welbeck, Chuba Akpom, Pelenda Da Silva, Aaron Eyoma, Edward Nketiah, Joseph Willock

I am a bit surprised that Bielk is included above given he is out injured until Xmas — and I thought Bola had been sent on loan (?)

There are so many squads with different players that I may have overlapped the ones you show GN5 – if so – apologies.

  38. Zee says:

Sinead O’Connor is apparently having a lot of problems with mental health, and has on occasion [allegedly] been suicidal following a rant on Facebook against pretty much everyone, and going missing while in the US. [Since been found].

Mind you, with all the fake news about celebrities, who knows the truth??

    Sad, if true.

  39. mickydidit89 says:

    Look here Zee,

I’m all for dishing out the sympathy card now and again, but there is no excuse for going out in public looking like that

  40. mickydidit89 says:

    Chas

The Gentleman’s cigarette cards are always so good

  41. Zee says:

    Fair enough, Micky. 😀

But you have to make the odd exception — like with our Terry, for example, and GoonerB’s camel.

  42. mickydidit89 says:

When Terry turns up in his white suit, stand him next to a white wall and pretend he doesn’t exist

  43. Eddie says:

so sad: “Richard Branson says Hurricane Irma ‘utterly devastated’ his private island “

  44. Big Raddy says:

I have a PM to write. It will be one of few over the next month as BR takes a well-deserved break from his homeland.

We have an excellent substitute until normal service is returned

  45. GunnerN5 says:

Micky – I don’t think it’s possible to hide Terry – besides I need his humour.

  46. GunnerN5 says:

Both Sanchez and Wilshere were training today and looking determined and energetic – I’m always looking for positive signs.

  47. Big Raddy says:

If you do not believe there is an anti AFC agenda in the press, read this sarcastic rubbish from the Guardian …

Last season Arsène Wenger tended to stage his weekly press conferences on Fridays. But he held the one to preview this weekend’s clash with Bournemouth today, Thursday. That catalyst for change that Ivan Gazidis bragged about is evidently in full effect. Watch out, 15 teams currently above Arsenal in the Premier League table!

The conference may have been ostensibly to look forward to the meeting with Eddie Howe’s billionaire-backed fairytale club, the one that was fined £35,000 in March for breaching anti-doping regulations, but an audience with Wenger is traditionally also an opportunity to try to glean the Frenchman’s thoughts on the state of modern society and, if possible, on Per Mertesacker’s guinea pig, Weird Uncle Fiver’s film exploits and José Mourinho’s personal grooming. That chance appears to have been missed today but the hackery did manage to prod the Arsenal manager into holding forth on an assortment of football-related topics, including the recently closed transfer window.

Naturally Wenger confirmed that Arsenal came tantalisingly close to signing some of the very best players in the world, but he also called for a change in the rules so the window is shut before the season starts because “in players’ minds, they have no clarity. Are they in? Are they out? Are they half in? Are they half out?” Premier League chairmen duly listened to Wenger’s plea, and it was announced this afternoon that they have voted to close next summer’s window before the 2018-19 campaign begins. The vote was not unanimous – it is understood 14 suits voted in favour of the amendment, with five against and one abstention – and the change will only concern incoming signings, so clubs will still be able to sell players until 31 August.

Wenger was also invited to respond to the many former Arsenal players who are now paid good money to point at Aaron Ramsey updating his Facebook profile in the middle of a match and Mesut Özil’s pausing to feed ducks on his way to cutting out an opponent’s counterattack. “I always have problems understanding what a legend is and what a legend isn’t. I’ve had all the players here and we speak about today but they all had their weaknesses, as well, don’t worry about that,” tut-tutted Wenger of the professional ex-professionals. “They had their weak games and their weak behaviours. Nobody was perfect.” Careful. Arsène knows.

  49. LB says:

Great song, written by Prince I think.

    I wish her happiness.

  50. VP of Oz says:

good morning all, the weekend has started, COYG

  51. LB says:

Great goal, scored by Reiss I think.

    I wish him success.

    Hot damn, yea…………………

  52. LB says:

    Good morning…………..

    Oh yeah, its Saturday there.

Does that mean that you get to see the game before we do?

  53. VP of Oz says:

LB, we are about 9hrs ahead so no

  54. VP of Oz says:

I’m in one of those moods in which I firmly believe that we can win the title this season. Blinkers firmly on, its going to be a great weekend

  55. LB says:

That’s a shame VP I was hoping you were going to tell us the score.

Although like you I expect us to win but then again I always do.

  56. fatgingergooner says:

    VP,

Don’t be stupid. How can we possibly win the league when we are 16th with only 35 games of the season left? We’ve already dropped 66.66% of the points available to us. We are screwed.

  57. VP of Oz says:

    FGG,
firstly, as an aussie, I always support the underdog
secondly, the following is a roadmap on how we can win the league –
    Arsenal beat bournemouth
    ManCity lose to Liverpool
    Everton beat Spurs
    Stoke draw Manu
    Leicester draw Chelsea

Arsenal beat chelsea again (as per FAC and CS)
    Liverpool draw again Burnley
Everton beat MAnu (Rooney scores winning goal)
    Spurs win
    ManCity win

    Arsenal beat West Brom
    West Ham draw Spurs
    Everton lose
    Southampton beat ManU
    Man City draw
    Stoke beat Chelsea
    Leicester beat Liverpool

So after the next 3 rounds
    Arsenal +9
    Everton +6
    Man City +4
    ManU +1
    Chelsea +1
    Liverpool +1

and we are on our way whilst ManC, Manu, Chels and Pool are in crisis, meanwhile media will turn their attention to the upcoming Arsenal collapse that fails to materialise

  58. VP of Oz says:

I was so busy applying my blinkers that I failed to see FGG taking the piss, well done.

  59. Eddie says:

I have nothing but fond memories of Bournemouth, lovely place with great beaches, I wish I could go there again

And without pre-emptying Raddy’s PM I have to say I like their team and the manager. I hope we will win, but thrashing would be too harsh and these nice visitors

  60. Big Raddy says:

    Morning All,

Matchday. I have been looking forward to this for ages and just been told by Mrs R. I am working until 18.00 😦

    Gutted

  61. Eddie says:

raddy – become sick, quick! there is a stomach bug doing circles in north London, everybody has it. Surely it has found its way to Copenhagen by now?

  62. mickydidit89 says:

    Mornin

    Match Day. At bloody last.

  63. mickydidit89 says:

    Erik
    Pretend you’re deaf

  64. Eddie says:

why deaf??? dead is more convincing

  65. Eddie says:

the effing bastard my ex was a brilliant manipulator, I give him that. Every time he wanted to go somewhere (usually Ireland) he would create an argument, walk out in a huff and not talk to me until the departure day, when he would casually say ‘you didn’t talk to me so I couldn’t discuss the trip with you’. Yukkie yukkie man, why do I even think about him on the Match Day??

  66. fatgingergooner says:

    Sorry VP!

Wasn’t taking the piss out of you, just laughing at the press who have already written us off. It may well turn out that we don’t finish anywhere near the top and our season goes into meltdown, but nobody can predict that and it hasn’t happened yet regardless of what people say. I saw a section on Sky Sports yesterday where they were asking a pundit ‘where has it all gone wrong for Arsenal this season?’. WE’VE PLAYED 3 F*CKING GAMES!!!!!

  67. fatgingergooner says:

I reckon that we go on a bit of a run now and win at least 9 of our next 12 games. Then we play Spurs, City and United close to each other and our season falls apart again.

I must say though that I see no reason why these players can’t win something this season. The TW is done and Sanchez knows he’s here til end of the season. I think Wenger can still the best out of him if he’s smart.

Team selection, effort, tactics and support need to change, and I think it will, starting at 3pm.

  68. VP of Oz says:

all good FGG, went for a long run today and it was nice and sunny.
I read that they asked if Arsenal could still win the title and AW said yes, so thats good enough for me until it becomes mathematically impossible to do so.
I also read that Sagna could join again on a free
    I do like this team

  69. Morning all

    Match day 🙂

We have a New Post ……………………..
