Will Petr Cech make a significant difference?

I think we can all agree that Arsenal have been lacking a truly top class ’keeper since “Mad” Jens left. Some would say that the lack goes back further to David “Safe Hands” Seaman’s departure.

We’ve seen a few come and go, Almunia, Fabianski and Mannone, while a few more have stayed, Szczesny, Ospina and Martinez. All have been given a chance to make the Number One shirt their own. None of them have been entirely successful.

The signing of David Ospina during last summer’s transfer window came as a bit of a surprise to most Gooners, he had had a good World Cup, was one of two first team ‘keepers at French Ligue 1 side Nice but was not happy to share the gloves with the young Joris Delle and so signed for Arsenal for around £3 million. He had a good but not spectacular first season and now seems likely to leave for pastures new.

So we come to our latest recruit Petr Cech, one of the rocks that Abramovich’s Chelsea were built on and a mainstay of the side since he joined in 2004, his 333 appearances say a lot about his consistency as well as his talent. There can be no doubt that he played an enormous part in the many successes that Chelsea have enjoyed since Abramovich injected his roubles into the then ailing West London club.

I don’t think there can be any doubt that Arsene Wenger has signed one of the best goalies in the world. I believe that Cech will bring an air of calmness into our defence and will give some confidence to our defenders. My personal belief is that he will certainly make a significant difference to our team and it’s prospects in the coming seasons.

What do other Gooners think?

He will make a difference as he is a better GK than both PiG and Ospina. He has better aerial ability and is just a safer pair of hands. Most impoartantly, he is good at marshalling his defenders and I think that his talent and achievements will automatically command respect for his instructions – he will come down the team as well.

Now – if we defend well as a team, like we did once Kos, Coquelin and Giroud were back in the team, Cech will have little work to do (like Ospina) but he will just do it better and save us some points…It maybe 3 or it maybe 15 but for sure he is an upgrade…

In the end, he is a great signing…

I will be upset to see Ospina leave though as he is a good GK with great attitude on and off the pitch…but with Cech coming and PiG still growing, we have to let him go…

He’s going to be the best signing of the TW. £10m for one of the best keepers in the world, and from your direct rivals, is ridiculous.

I can name 4 teams in world football where Cech is not guaranteed first choice: United, Chelsea, Bayern, Juve.

That’s it! That’s how good a signing we’ve just got for £10m. He’s in the top 5 in his position in the world. Let’s not forget it weakens Chelsea aswell.

The rest of the PL need to worry about an Arsenal/Arsene side with money.

  3. fatgingergooner says:

Also, we’ve signed a Petr Cech who’s just had to watch from the sidelines for 12 months as a young, freakishly good GK has taken his place. That means he’s fresh, and he’s got a massive point to prove.

What makes it even sweeter is Mourinho was desperate for him to go abroad because he knows exactly what he’s just let go.

  4. Eddie says:

and to make it even better ……”Petr Cech slams Chelsea ‘fans’ who sent him death threats following move to Arsenal” 🙂

Excellent signing, he has at least 5 years left to his career. Our first world class keeper since Seaman.

Plus, if Szcz has any gray matter between his ears he will make the most of being an apprentice to the best one

  5. Eddie says:

are we (the AAers minus DidIt) still happy if Cech is the only sigining this TW?

  6. Mjc says:

Any chance that Ospina will stay (for a year at least) and Szczesny be loaned to Southampton for the season?

  7. fatgingergooner says:

    Not sure Eddie.

We all love shiny new toys as we see it as a sign of ambition, but I think keeping our current crop together and having a proper pre season could be just as important.

If Podolski, Campbell and Sanogo leave then we could probably have room for a LW or a ST, but not sure who we could buy that would improve on what we have.

I’m not as convinced as the media that we will sign another HM just yet. We have Coq, Arteta, Flamini, and Wenger spent £2.5m on that young Polish kid in January, plus he’s talked about Chambers playing there, so I don’t think he will be rushed into buying a HM player. I think he will have his eye on somebody specific for when Arteta and Flamini leave, and the emergence of Coq has given him more time to get his man. Maybe he’s waiting for Javi Martinez to prove his fitness at Bayern? Apparently we wanted him last season.

I think everyone would love more players, but if i could choose one thing for us next season it would be to be lucky with injuries. Our squad is good enough if we don’t get decimated like last year.

  8. fatgingergooner says:

I was thinking the same thing. Would be great for him to get a year in the PL somewhere else, but Saints have signed Stekelenburg so not sure they will want anyone else.

  9. GoonerB says:

Thanks Norfolk.I see Chezzer as a similar keeper to Cech but just not quite as polished yet, so itmay work out very well with Chezzer as an understudy to Cech. I do expect Chezzer to get the 1st choice role at some point in the next few seasons but hopefully by then Cech will be happy to reamain as a decent veteran back up. If it works out this way we could be sorted in this position for many seasons now.

He should make a difference but for those that think it will be a massive one I would show some caution. You still can’t ignore that Cech has played behind a far better defence in the last few years than Chezzer (possibly the best defence) and it may be that Cech would not have been so significantly better playing behind our defence at times. He is arriving now though at a time when we are far better organised in defence.

  10. G’day all, just back from my weekly swim and as I dived in, for the first time I thought “this water could be a bit cooler”.

I haven’t got a lot of time to spend at the keyboard today, the sun lounger is calling from the shade of the apple tree, a bottle of white wine is chilling and a good book waiting.

The more I think about the Cech signing the more I like it. There’s no reason why he shouldn’t play for another three or even four seasons, some ‘keepers seem to go on for ever.

I too would be sorry to see Ospina leave, I think he’s far better than Szczesny and the idea of letting the P.I.G. go out on loan and keeping Ospina is certainly appealing.

As to whether there will be any more signings, I think we must just wait and see although I have a sneaking feeling that Le Professeur will pull a surprise out of the hat.

  11. The Cockie Monster says:

Listen Girls, Guys and Gays !………………Cech wanting to be a number one at one of the worlds top and most iconic clubs and still stay in London made this one of the easiest transfers ever for Wenger !……………lets now spend some proper money as we are fcuking rolling in it ……………………..just ask Kelsey !. 😀

  12. The Cockie Monster says:

Abou Diaby is in Dallas sorting out an MLS move there. After they take the medical insurance out of his wage pack he`ll be playing for nothing !…………..lucky then that he can supplement his earnings as a porno star !………………..Diaby does Dallas !.

  13. utter tool says:

    Cheers, NG.
I’m hoping Cech makes a significant difference.
If he matches Ospina’s record after coming into the team we’ll win the League. 🙂

Realistically, how many points could Cech have saved us last season?
I’ve seen some say that Szcz cost us upwards of 12 points…..
…..maybe we might have had a draw at Southampton away if it wasn’t for Szcz’s blunders (we didn’t look like scoring, so 0-0 may have been posssible).
Where were the other 10 points?

are you just out of bed or about to go to bed micky?

    What are split arses?

  17. fatgingergooner says:

apparently Vidal has agreed terms with Real Madrid.

I wonder who’s next to complete 90% of a deal with Arsenal!!!

  18. Gööner In Exile says:

Evening all, next season will be interesting, I’ve admired Cech for sometime but I felt as a team Chelsea changed the way they defended set pieces after his head knock. That will be the crucial difference.

Will be very interesting to hear how he compares the management style going forward.

  19. MickyDidIt89 says:

I imagine Cech is not a keeper we can rely on to come up for a last gasp attempt at a headed goal from a corner in the 92nd 🙂

  20. MickyDidIt89 says:

Thanks for post. Sorry not around much at the moment

That was not the loathesome Didit commenting yesterday. Only the pink panther avatar donates that idiots seal of authenticity.

Fact is, Im just horribly busy, so no afternoon kips, up at 7 not 5 and that leaves no time for some early chat and insults

  21. LB says:

    Morning folks.

Could someone clear something up for me, I have been out of the loop, half way up an Italian mountain in fact on a bike that weighs about the same as an Arsenal match day program.

I have read that we have signed Cech for ten million, that is his wages right, not a transfer fee paid to Chelsea?

And how long is his contract?

  22. GoonerB says:

Don’t hold me to this LB but yes the transfer fee was around £10m. I think it was a 5 year deal but not completely certain.

  23. GoonerB says:

Just a proposal for a post that may be relevant to the current climate. Maybe a poll on which DM we each wish to see arrive at THOF and why we feel they would be the best option, e.g would you vote Carvallho, Vidal, Bender.L, Bender.S, another, or the option of we don’t need one.

Players that have just moved to a new club (like Kondogbia) are obviously not viable options. I would do it for you but I have no idea how to set up a post with a poll 🙂

  24. Gööner In Exile says:

    Tribute to Lolo?

  25. If you want to write the post GB I can add the poll. Text me if you do want to and I’ll sort the rest.

  26. fatgingergooner says:

To help you along GB, here’s a list of pretty much all the players who’ve been touted as our next HM over the last year or so!

    Luiz Gustavo
    J Martinez
    L Bender
    S Bender
    Thiago Motta

    I vote Coq!

  27. fatgingergooner says:

    Btw GB,

These are all the ones that haven’t recently made moves.

  28. Eddie says:

koscielny has been with us for 5 years already??? Wow, I would bet it was only 3

  29. Eddie says:

ha ha ha ha bloody ha

Manchester United have been secretly trying to sell 31-year-old striker Robin van Persie since January, according to his former team-mate Pierre van Hooijdonk.

    Nobody wants the treacherous prick

  30. Eddie says:

    Diaby to Dallas

Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, 25, was ‘lied to’ by Arsene Wenger over his future at Arsenal and the signing of Petr Cech from Chelsea, according to former Poland keeper Jan Tomaszewski.

that will help Szczesny’s career! Idiots, both Tomaszewski (yeah, the one from Wembley) and Wojtek’s father

  31. I have a post from GunnerN5 in the cupboard so I’m going to use that today.

    New Post everyone

  32. Eddie says:

sorry micky – Falcao is a Chav now
