Young Jack to lead us into the 5th Round?

My parents had a holiday home in Brighton. It was a terraced house near the front which they bought for £4,000 (probably nearer a million today!). I spent every summer down there and got to know and love the town. When my father retired the family moved to Brighton but thanks to my Arsenaldom, I stayed in Islington to start an independent life. Why am I telling you this? Because it is very early in the morning and I am stuck for how to begin today’s pre-match 😀

Mid-July. A Brighton Beach Holiday (©BR)

OK. Cup of coffee downed and onto football ……

I love the FA Cup. Wembley and Cardiff have given me some of the best days of my life, and I want more of them. Should we win today and get a decent home draw  …….. dream on, Raddy.

But, this a going to be a difficult game. Brighton are a good side and are on a run of 9 consecutive winning home FAC games. They beat Newcastle in the last round. Gus Poyet has done a fine job for them and promotion is a feasible target. He has created a team committed to the passing game and expansive football – whether we see it today is another matter as I expect Poyet to tell his team to press the ball at every opportunity. They will be good and difficult opponents. That said, we have never lost to Brighton in the FA Cup.

Interesting team selection for Mr Wenger today. We are depleted by injury but Diaby and Rosicky return to the squad. I would love to see Mozart start – he is one of my favourite players, his speed of passing and tactical awareness makes him a valuable player, sadly his chocolate legs have blighted his career. Some players need a rest, Sagna and Cazorla in particular and with Liverpool on Wednesday, I would rest Gibbs.

Runner & Riders.

bright v arse

Should we be in excrement alley after 60 minutes, Theo can be the impact sub. Problem with the above team is that there are 4 attacking MF’s but without a DM, we have little choice.

Today’s explorer is another of those lesser known English Victorian heroes who had extraordinary lives in a time when such a thing was possible. Edward Whymper (1840 -1911). This fellow was a naturalist, scientist, mountaineer and explorer. He mapped much of Greenland, he surveyed the French Alps, he went into the Ecuadorean Andes and made the first ascent of Chimorazo (6267m) whilst studying altitude sickness. He climbed in the Canadian Rockies and had a mountain named after him following his ascent (Mt Whymper). Whymper was best known as an Alpinist and in 1865 became the first man to climb Matterhorn; 4 of his party died on the climb. He later wrote books on Zermatt and Chamonix, where he is buried.

No Beard ……  No Title.

There is papertalk of Jack Wilshere being captain today. If so, JW will become the youngest ever Captain of Arsenal taking over from Tony Adams. Should he get the armband ahead of more experienced players? Damn right he should. Little Jack is going to be Arsenal Captain for many years, so why not start now?

Beating the Seagulls would give me much pleasure and boasting rights with my brother. Let it be so.

  1. LB says:

The corner stone of AA is as solid as ever. Top drawer pre-match BR

  2. Rasp says:

Terrific PM Raddy, it seems we all like Brighton and may even have a soft spot for Poyet which is surprising considering his previous clubs.

Unlike today’s explorer, we shouldn’t have a mountain to climb, but I have revised my view of earlier in the week and would like to see us field a strong side. Resting Cazorla and Sagna is a must.

I really hope Jack is made captain, he certainly deserves the honour if only on a temporary basis.

  3. Big Raddy says:

RAsp. I thought RvP made a fine captain pre- transfer nonsense

  4. dandan says:

Well done Raddy, the main thing I remember about Brighton from way back was all the Mods and Rockers pitching up there in the sixties for a bank holiday punch up. Oh and the beach was as stoned as the Hippies who sat on it before the gays. Cosmopolitan place Brighton.

They have had a roller coaster ride but have been good team at times over the years. Would not be wise to take them to lightly. As for Jack a natural leader armband or no, he is the man.

  5. barumgooner says:

Nice pre-match as always BR. I think we will be ok, hopefully Ramsey will continue his good work from midweek and cement his place in the team. I think if Diaby plays he is most suited to Cazorlas position where he can do the most damage going forward and the least damage coming back. Agree about TR, such a shame his Arsenal career has been so blighted, hopefully he will come on for the Pod with half hour to go. 3-0 to the Arsenal !

  6. kelsey says:

Always entertaining to read a pre match from you Raddy.
arseblog tends to go with more or less the same team, though I think theo will start (he’s our main man now he has banked his cheque)

The film Brighton Rock was based on dandan’s youth as he will tell you himself. 🙂

  7. Norfolk Gooner says:

    Good morning to you all,

According to Wenger it was Vermaelen’s idea to hand the arm-band to Wilshire on Wednesday, he went on to say that he has no intention of taking the captaincy away from our Belgium star but is sure that Jack will be the Arsenal club captain in the future and can see no reason why he shouldn’t go on to captain England.

Having said that, I don’t believe that Wilshire should be made captain soon, he doesn’t need to carry that burden as well as the expectations of all Arsenal fans. Give the lad a bit of time.

  8. Rasp says:

Yes I agree Raddy, I edited my comment to make that point and then took it out as I didn’t want to detract from the pre match debate

  9. GunnerN5 says:

As Norfolk has already said – here are Arsene’s comments on the captaincy.

I have to go and research BR’s explorer.

Wenger – Vermaelen gave Wilshere the armband

    By Rob Kelly

Arsène Wenger says it was Thomas Vermaelen’s decision to give the captain’s armband to Jack Wilshere on Wednesday night.

The Arsenal skipper sustained an ankle injury in the 5-1 victory against West Ham and was substituted in the 58th minute at Emirates Stadium.

Wilshere took over the captaincy, but Wenger insists he did not tell Vermaelen to hand the role to the 21-year-old.

“Honestly, Vermaelen made that choice and I let him make it,” the manager said. “It is always interesting to see when Vermaelen is out who he feels spontaneously should be the captain. I did not want to stop him.

“[Wilshere] is naturally a guy who is not scared of anything on the football pitch and that is usually the sign of a leader. He wants to win and shows you that.

“Of course he will be one of the leaders of this club – in fact he already is. A leader is somebody who does everything on the pitch to help his team to win. And he does that.

“If you are asking me if I will take the captaincy away from Vermaelen [then my answer is] no. But I think Jack will be captain of this club one day.

“First of all, because of the quality of the player. Second, his commitment and desire to win. And his understanding of the game. He understands football very well and senses on the pitch what you have to do.”

  10. GunnerN5 says:

BR I just read this account of the deaths of Whymper’s four comrades on Matterhorn,

    It gave me the shivers………….

On the descent, Hadow slipped and fell onto Croz, dislodging him and dragging Douglas and Hudson to their deaths; the rope parted, saving the other three.

A controversy ensued as to whether the rope had actually been cut, but a formal investigation could not find any proof. The account of his attempts on the Matterhorn occupies the greater part of his book, Scrambles amongst the Alps (1871), in which the illustrations are engraved by Whymper himself. The accident haunted Whymper:

“Every night, do you understand, I see my comrades of the Matterhorn slipping on their backs, their arms outstretched, one after the other, in perfect order at equal distances—Croz the guide, first, then Hadow, then Hudson, and lastly Douglas. Yes, I shall always see them…”

  11. RockyLives says:

    Splendid as per, BR

I wonder if we will carry on the momentum and confidence of Wednesday. If we do it will be a comfortable win. But I wouldn’t be surprised if we stuttered again.

  12. Sheep Hagger ™ says:

Great read with my tea and fag, nice one BR.
A must win at least for us maybe a draw won’t be to bad considering.
I’ve got to go shopping with Face Ache at 3pm so I will listen to it on radio as I’m driving.
Hope Mr Wenger plays a solid team and we get into them early on.

  13. Jamie gooner says:

I think it would be better to rest the Pod since he finds it difficult to perform in two matches a week. Replacement……….. Arshavin or Gnabry

  14. Gus says:

    Adams – Brilliant, Mr Arsenal
Vierra – Again brilliant, a real leader
Henry – Incredible player, not a great captain but not the worst
Gallas – Had leadership qualities but was never very good, sit down protest was terrible
Cesc – Incredible player, poor captain.
RVP – There’s no denying he was a good captain
Vermalen – Too early to tell. For years and years everyone was screaming for him to be captain, over Cesc and rvp. Since he got the armband his form has dropped a bit for the first time but there are signs of him improving of late, hope that will improve his captaincy as well.

Wilshere will be captain but lets wait. The captaincy was too much for fabregas when he was younger but Adams handled it very well. Wait a season or two. Vermalen and Arteta in the meantime is perfect.

  15. GunnerN5 says:

TEAM NEWS: Wenger makes six changes

Arsène Wenger has made six changes to his side for the trip to Brighton and Hove Albion in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Tomas Rosicky makes his first start since early December, while Abou Diaby is also recalled to the side.

Andre Santos and Carl Jenkinson occupy the full-back berths, while there are also starts for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Laurent Koscielny, who replaces the injured Thomas Vermaelen.

    Per Mertesacker captains the team.

Team in full: Szczesny, Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Santos, Ramsey, Diaby, Rosicky, Podolski, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Giroud.

Subs: Mannone, Sagna, Gibbs, Wilshere, Cazorla, Arshavin, Walcott.

  16. GunnerN5 says:

Six changes – but I really like the side Arsene has chosen and for once our bench looks very strong.

I would be shocked if we don’t win this game, after the Whaming we gave the hammers the team should be full of confidence.

Santos, Jenkinson, Rosucky and Diaby will all be trying to impress the boss.

  17. GunnerN5 says:

    Rosucky was an unintentional slip.

  18. So much for Jack leading us into the next round

    BBC Sport ‏@BBCSport
BREAKING: No Jack Wilshere in the Arsenal starting XI for today’s game against Brighton. Midfielder Abou Diaby returns to the side. #AFC

  19. Hi Gn5 – sorry I didn’t see you there 😉

  20. GoonerB says:

Great post Raddy. Whymper looks a bit like Roberts Shaw the actor. Quiet on here today. I just got back from work and thought I would be well down the line in posting. Fingers crossed today. I do think we have a chance in this competition.

  21. GoonerB says:

Peaches, that post I sent you the other day was a bit hurried and unchecked and likely too long (surprise surprise). I knew you wouldn’t need it immediately. If you feel it has any basic worth (might be a bit cheesy) do you think I should go through it again and rehash it and change it somewhat.

  22. GunnerN5 says:

    Hi Peaches,

GB is right it’s very quiet today – where is everybody?

  23. Shard says:

Thank you or the pre match report BR. How long is the list of British explorers? I mean I know there must be loads of them, but surely you can’t know them all. Can you? Or are you sneakily repeating some? 🙂

  24. Shard says:

We do have a strong bench, except if one of the CBs gets injured. I suppose Sagna or Jenkinson will fill in in that case.

  25. kelsey says:

Is there anywhere to watch or listen to the game, i don’t get I player

  26. GunnerN5 says:

Let’s hope they stay fit Shard – but you’re right they look like the only possible subs.

I’m really surprised that he has not put any youngsters on the bench – he must be very serious about winning.

  27. GunnerN5 says:

I have no idea Kelsey, we are so lucky here in Canada as it’s a total rarity for a game not to be shown.

Have you checked the streaming sites?

  28. kelsey says:

They are all dodgy over here since the beginning of the year GN5.They freeze your PC and demand money to unblock. It’s a huge scam ans the virus is so deep it needs an expert to clear it,so I won’t chance it.

  29. GoonerB says:

Shard @2.39. Good point, the list of British explorers can’t be inexhaustible. How about you and I go off around the world for a year and discover something. We could then be immortalised by the king of pre-matches himself. By the way what is your beard growing capability like as mine is slightly the wrong side of crap. Whenever I have tried I tend to end up looking more disheveled and untrustworthy than distinguished and stoical.

  30. oz gunner says:

great read as always big dandy thank you. Nearly kick off, can’t bloody wait. Stones on the beach, how terrible!!

  31. oz gunner says:

    stream if needed:

  32. Adrian says:

Once again we start our games at snails pace

  33. Adrian says:

Ffs close them down like we did in the west ham game

  34. Red Arse says:

You can listen on your computer to the BBC Local Radio on the internet.

Type:- BBC Radio; then scroll down thru the main channels until you come to:- Local Stations, scroll down to:- All Local stations, and find:- BBC London 94.9

    Good Luck! 🙂

  35. oz gunner says:

    great great save!

  36. Red Arse says:

    0:1 Arsenal Girou

  37. oz gunner says:

    F’n BANG!!!!

What a counter. What a finish!!!!

  38. Adrian says:

Great finish by Giroud! Tbh it was against the run of play.

  39. GunnerN5 says:

    A Giroud rocket

  40. GunnerN5 says:

No need to be honest Adrian….

  41. Red Arse says:

Gervinho puts Ivory Coast 1 Nil up against Tunisia.

  42. Big Raddy says:

Nice start. Now we are playing rope-a-dope which is a dangerous tactic. But one successful counter-attack and it is curtains for the Seagulls

  43. Red Arse says:

What is a ‘rope a dope’ tactic BR, for those of us who no can see! 🙂

  44. GunnerN5 says:

That’s good news RA he needs to build up his confidence.

  45. Adrian says:

    Diaby looks very rusty.

  46. oz gunner says:

sitting back soaking up the pressure. then hitting on the counter with a knockout blow

  47. GunnerN5 says:

BR we’ve slowed down too much – we need to up the pace as I don’t think they can keep up with us.

  48. oz gunner says:

    link didn’t work RA?

  49. oz gunner says:

    santos…very lucky

  50. Adrian says:

Saved by the flag. I could’ve killed Santos if that goal stood. Horrible horrible mistake when a simple pass would’ve suffice.

  51. GunnerN5 says:

Lucky for us – a stupid give away by Santos and the goal is flagged offside.

  52. Big Raddy says:

Santos- you complete plum. A lucky escape

  53. Adrian says:

Cmon guys.. Pick up the damn pace.

  54. Red Arse says:

It did work, perfectly, but my security system has blocked out suspected ‘malware’.

I don’t want to take a chance — bugger poor defending – Sea gulls – goal!!!

  55. GunnerN5 says:

Thirty one minutes in and Podolski is missing.

    Shit their 1sy corner and it’s agoal………….

  56. oz gunner says:

what on earth, szcz should have come for that!!!
need GiE’s perspective but surely his to fist away?

  57. oz gunner says:

that’s fair enough RA. Sometimes Virus software is a bit touchy with those sorts of things. Mine marked it as fine but better to be safe then sorry i suppose

  58. GunnerN5 says:

We are watching the “other” Arsenal.

  59. RockyLives says:

Pod has an assist to his name.

  60. RockyLives says:

Poor from the CBs and Szcz.

  61. oz gunner says:

    @ Rocky

They def let him run right on through but surely they were waiting for him to collect it. Guess they should not have risked it though

  62. RockyLives says:

Not so sure about the ‘other’ Arsenal.

We’ve played ok apart from the usual fatal individual mistakes.

  63. GunnerN5 says:

Rocky – so that justifies him for disapearing into the ether?

  64. GunnerN5 says:

Rocky – The other Arsenal is the slow ponderous team that we are watching.

  65. RockyLives says:

    He’s been involved Gn5

  66. GunnerN5 says:

I think you might mean dissolved?

  67. RockyLives says:

  68. GunnerN5 says:

Santos is a bit of a disaster he continues to try to dribble his way out of defence.

  69. GunnerN5 says:

Thank goodness we have Walcott and Wilshere on the bench.

  70. Adrian says:

    Wtf santos?

  71. oz gunner says:

    24 caps for Brazil…how?

  72. Adrian says:

Personally I get really nervous when they attack down their right flank, Santos is just poor.

  73. Adrian says:

If Wenger was Ferguson I very much doubt Santos would be on the pitch in the second half.

  74. RockyLives says:

I’ll look up Pod’s stats after the game Gn5 – I don’t think he will be much different from any of our front three.

  75. Adrian says:

Poor half from us… Quite a let down considering what we saw in the west ham game.

  76. Got the stream thanks, anyone know how to go to full screen????

  77. Just noticed it says disable adblocker …….. any ideas????

  78. Norfolk Gooner says:

I’m not impressed, our left back is constantly out of position and is playing in a sloppy, lackadaisical manner. What was Szczesny up to when they scored?

We need a second half improvement but with two rusty players, Diaby and Rosicky, in midfield Wenger will have to change things if it is to happen.

  79. Big Raddy says:

Easy target but Santos has been awful. Not easy coming into the match with so little pitch time but it is the basics which are lacking. The Santos/Podolski partnership is non-existent.

And as usual we need to up the pace of passing .

It is also clear that Rosicky is not settled into the team. He is slowing the game down.

And Szczesny having made one super-save showed his inexperience. We desperately need a back-up keeper. There are loads around AW.

  80. Norfolk Gooner says:

Look for a tiny x in a box, it’s probably in an ad somewhere, click it and you should get the control line along the bottom.

  81. GunnerN5 says:

It’s no surprise that I like stats but even if his stats have look good he has still been ineffective but then again so has Oxlade.

Against West Ham we made fantastic use of our speed down the wings- today it looks like our wings have been clipped.

  82. Big Raddy says:

Didn’t we pay €8m for Santos?

  83. Norfolk Gooner says:

Jack Butland for about £5 million

  84. Norfolk Gooner says:

    €7,999,999 too much!

  85. Shard says:

I use this site to watch the games when I don’t have access to the tv, but I think someone has posted the link on AA before only for it to be discarded as potentially carrying malware. Has worked fine for me though.

  86. GunnerN5 says:

When the broadcast began today the channel that was supposed to air our game was showing Macclesfield vs Wigan – you can imagine my reaction- however about 9 minutes in they realized their error and switched to the Arsenal game.

  87. Gooner in Exile says:

Just seen goals, lovely by Giroud, not so good by Szczesny, but surely a defender should try and block the run just a little bit!

  88. GunnerN5 says:

Now we need to see the 2nd half Arsenal – that’s my Arsenal.

  89. Shard says:

Santos was poor. Now watch him come back in the 2nd half and have a stormer 🙂 At least I hope. The one time he did that was at Chelsea last season. But then, there was no Podolski then. The problem with their partnership is that both of them like to cut in.

  90. RockyLives says:

The discussion about Santos may go some way to explaining any lack of Pod impact.

  91. Gooner in Exile says:

I’m on Channel 133323 on Sopcast, working fine and dandy

  92. Big Raddy says:

I use the nut job stream put up by Oz at 3.00. Works fine

  93. Norfolk Gooner says:

Nobody in our midfield is even attempting to win the ball, they are just waiting for Brighton to give possession away.

  94. GunnerN5 says:

Rocky maybe and the same could be said for the Oxlade/Jenkinson pairing.

  95. RockyLives says:

The more worrying ‘absentee’ for me – given his position on the pitch – is Diaby.

  96. Red Arse says:

We may be committed to our football, but in Egypt 74 people were killed in a riot after a game, 2 years ago,

Today, 21 people have been sentenced to death by the Egyptian Courts, and now 27 people have been killed in rioting, after the verdicts.

    Another 60 verdicts expected soon.

    Football is not worth that.

  97. GunnerN5 says:

I think Brighton may park a pier in front of goal?

  98. RockyLives says:

    Maybe Gn5
But there is less play on our right generally as Brighton seem to be targeting Santos.

  99. kelsey says:

Diaby a shadow of the player he could have been.

  100. oz gunner says:

and walcott takes set pieces because? pod has a cannon

  101. GunnerN5 says:

Sod the Pod was really unlucky.

  102. Adrian says:

Podolski! So close to an absolute beauty!

  103. Norfolk Gooner says:

We can’t keep both Diaby and Ramsey on the pitch, they are both slowing the game down. One or the other please Mr. Wenger.

  104. Adrian says:

  105. oz gunner says:

    is el-abd Senderos’ dad?

    what a goal!!!

  106. Norfolk Gooner says:

Giroud just keeps getting better. Brilliant finish!

  107. GunnerN5 says:

Wow – we have us a REAL center forward.
He must have been watching Bobby Smith videos.

  108. kelsey says:

Thankd diaby for listening to me 🙂

  109. oz gunner says:

looks a bit proppy Giroud. Hopefully nothing wrong with his Calf and it’s just cramp

  110. RockyLives says:

So Pod answers Gn5 with that free kick and Diaby answers me with that pass for the second goal.

  111. na na na nananana nananana Girooooooooooooood

  112. oz gunner says:

    again…come on!

  113. Adrian says:

We are absolutely shite at defending crosses into the box. Once again its from the right hand side, there’s no doubting it now that Brighton is targeting Santos as the weak link in the team.

  114. RockyLives says:

    Why can’t we defend?

BFG wrong side of the striker for the whole move.

  115. Norfolk Gooner says:

Down the right again! wtf is going on?

  116. oz gunner says:

Santos great closing down! Labouring away huffing and puffing. What a disgrace to the professionals who have worn the arsenal shirt before

  117. Big Raddy says:

FFS. We are getting worse and worse when balls come into the box. Pathetic defending

  118. GunnerN5 says:

We need to bring on – Gibbs, Cazorla and Walcott

  119. Big Raddy says:

    GN5. Agree on 70 mins

  120. Big Raddy says:

    Now Gibbs for Santos please

  121. oz gunner says:

giroud can barely run, he should have been taken off. Last thing we need is him injured

  122. goonerjake says:

Santos sounds bad as im only listening on arsenal player, however how are we defending as a team? because i think it sounds like we have to defend better as a team

  123. GunnerN5 says:

Santos is a serious liability – why is he still on the pitch?

  124. oz gunner says:

    @ GJ

story of our defence for many seasons now. same old story

  125. Gooner In Exile says:

Haven’t seen OGs second, saw the Brighton second though….poor defending from Diaby and Santos to Kos and BFG, have no idea why Kos is so far in front of near post or BFG is ball side of his man. And on top of that way way way to deep based on where ball was delivered from.

  126. Adrian says:

    Santos once again.. Good riddance.

  127. GunnerN5 says:

    At last!!!!

  128. oz gunner says:

take a good look kids…that’s what happens if you rest on your laurels. He came with so much promise, now look at him!

  129. Adrian says:

  130. goonerjake says:

    Wa hooo wa lcott

  131. GunnerN5 says:

Wally to the rescue……..oops there’s still time for Brighton to scopre?

  132. Norfolk Gooner says:

  133. kelsey says:

    always rated walcott (duck)

  134. GunnerN5 says:

    Kelsey did you mean be-rated?

  135. kelsey says:

we huffed and we pufed and finally blew them down

  136. dandan says:

Mr Kelsey am waiting for the day you publish your apology to the scoring machine that is Theooooooooooooooo 🙂 oh yea of little faith.
Craig Mackail-Smith lives 50 yards from me with Barry Fry’s daughter, would have sent the boys round had he scored 🙂

  137. Gooner in Exile says:

    Job done 😀

  138. He can have mine now dandan. Thank god I’m not the manager 🙂

  139. oz gunner says:

Tough away cup game…take it any day or the week. What a difference Gibbs made to the team

    @ Dandan

After that easy flop and penalty shout tell him to bugger off and go catch a wave!

  140. Big Raddy says:

Exactly. Job done. It was always going to be a difficult game and we came through it unscathed.

Only concern (apart from the defence with Saurez and Sturridge coming to town) is whether OG can recover in time. He is very important.

  141. Phew that was close … all we need is someone to write a match report or do some player ratings … please 🙂

  142. kelsey says:

Can’t make up my mind who was the better buy santos or sqillaci

  143. kelsey says:

    Santos rating 0

  144. Norfolk Gooner says:

What’s that chance card in Monopoly? Get out of jail? Wenger must have played it today!

I’m knackered and I’ve only been sitting watching it.

    Time for a quiet beer.

    ‘night all.

  145. oz gunner says:

    I can’t choose Kelsey…mmm…i vote jeffers!

  146. Gooner in Exile says:

Luton beat Norwich at Carrow Road, may have to go laugh at some Canaries 😀

  147. kelsey says:

    should never have sold alliadaire

  148. Adrian says:

I hope that I never have to see the day where Gibbs get another long term injury and we have no choice but to play Santos week in week out.

  149. Norfolk Gooner says:

    Careful GiE,

    Luton managed something Arsenal couldn’t.

  150. Gooner in Exile says:

Come now lads, Pascal Cygan and Stepanovs are surely Wenger’s best buys

  151. Gooner in Exile says:

True Norfolk, but thats history 😀

  152. Gooner in Exile says:

So Hughton sacked, Lambert back to Norwich, Adkins to take over at Villa?

Or Adkins to Norwich, Hughton to Villa, and Lambert down the Job Centre?

  153. Big Raddy says:

Well played Luton. So Luton beat Norwich 1-0 at Carrow Rd where we were beaten . Does this mean that we will be in deep trouble if we draw Luton?

Harry will say they are concentrating on the league. Terrible defeat.

  154. Red Arse says:

This is not knee jerk, so form a line to be-rate me – as GN5 might say – but I have never rated Mert, and I am out of the closet to say he was rubbish today.

Can’t jump, can’t run, can’t be in my team! 😀

  155. oz gunner says:

ahh aliadiere. The picture of perfect health. Some media outlets claimed we were ‘targeting’ him. If they did their research they would have known he played for us, instead of linking us with every little known french player. That’s Newcastle’s go now anyway

    @ BR

yeah I’m waiting for twitch to say they are focusing on survival.

  156. Big Raddy says:

RA. Let me be the first. IMO Mertesacker is our best defender. Sure he had a poor game today but everyone can have a poor afternoon.

  157. RockyLives says:

That’s such a knee jerk reaction!

BFG was badly at fault for their second today but has been far and away our best CB this season (in my opinion).

  158. RockyLives says:

Now let me invite the brickbats…

…I remain unconvinced that Szcz is a top class ‘keeper.

    (Runs for cover)

  159. RockyLives says:

oh… and while I’m at it, Oxlade-Chamberlain has been awful in his recent outings.

I know he’s only a kid and will improve, but if ever there was a candidate for loaning out… he could really do with a spell at somewhere like Wigan to learn the responsibilities that come with playing game in, game out.

  160. GoonerB says:

Redders, give your knees a little stroke and whisper gentle soothing words to them and they will soon stop jerking.

  161. Adrian says:

Defending today was horrible (as always the case when crosses start flying in), hopefully the team will spend more time learning to defend crosses as a team during training. Nevertheless a win’s a win and this game should do wonders for Giroud’s confidence.

  162. RA – if you do some player ratings for me for a post for tomorrow you can keep your leg jerking for a few more hours 😉

  163. Red Arse says:

Thank you — at least the line is orderly! 🙂

They do say ‘love is blind’! 😀

  164. GunnerN5 says:

Obligatory home penalty for Man U – game over after 2 minutes.

  165. Adrian says:

    From arseblog.

Wenger paid £6 million for Santos, and gave him a 4 year contract worth £60,000 a week.

If he runs down his contract thats a total investment of £18 million.

    What a waste of money.”

Unfortunately I have to agree. Was good the first half of last season and just went all the way downhill after that.

  166. Red Arse says:

Peaches, I am inclined to oblige, but the AA gang know I have already admitted I only saw the 2nd half, as I could not get a stream — and in a very mannerly and exquisitely genteel way they will tell me to get stuffed.

I think their argument will be; Mert can run; Mert can jump and Mert should be in the team!! 😀

I am thinking along the lines of watching the next game with one eye shut so I can have the same view as everyone else, and be accepted back into the club!

Now where is ‘you know who’? he might want to recruit me!! 😛

  167. GunnerN5 says:

Giroud was almost unplayable today – it’s been a long time since we’ve been able to make that claim.

  168. apperently there was a banner at the end that read “thanks for the memories but goodbye Wenger” (or something like that). Apparently they got beaten up by some other fans. spectrums claims that more than half of Arsenal fans want Wenger out are such bollocks. Maybe the 16 year old keyboard warriors but not he fans that go.

  169. evonne says:

Rocky – you cannot say I didn’t warn you about Szczesny, or Santos for that matter. Both were the weakest links today.

But hey, who cares? We won, Giroud was fan-bloody-tastic, the team played as one, I am satisfied customer

  170. Geronimo scored again

  171. Gooner In Exile says:

I think GM that banner was also unveiled after we stuffed Reading away in the league.

As for Mr Arse 🙂 Can you judge a defender when he has three unknowns around him? Ok Kos is not so much an unknown as Santos and Jenkinson but I can forgive him today with an unsettled back 4 around him.

Rocky Szczesny is fine, an error today for the first, the important thing is in goalkeeper world to put that one behind you, next games the test….it’s the special ingredient Fab1 and Almunia were missing, and De Gea hasn’t got it either, Hart on the other hand has made several costly mistakes this season, but you wouldn’t know it to look at him.

  172. Strus says:

Per tend to play offside, Laurent tend to drop deep= disaster waiting to happen!

  173. I think they got slapped then too GIE

  179. Red Arse says:

    Hi GIE, 🙂

I think it is Rugby where one player gets lifted into the air by his playmates. 🙂

Per jumps by himself, and he runs (or not) by himself.

It is interesting to see the reaction when I say something that I genuinely believe to be incontrovertibly true, but which clearly does not meet the view of the majority.

I have no problem with others disagreeing with my assessment, of course, and I can only trust representing the obverse side of the coin, in this instance, is not a problem or has caused me to be pushed beyond the pale.

Either way, I will remain true to my belief, and will not change it, unless the reason for that view changes.

    Sorry. 🙂

I have to admit that I popped onto you know what site earlier just out of interest to see if you know who was a regular poster on it. I had a trawl through a couple of their posts and couldn’t see him on there. I haven’t even glimpsed at that site for ages but the anger and vitriol seems to have become far worse than I can remember it ever being. A couple of chaps had the cheek to challenge what was being said and got slaughtered, and not in a nice way. Basically you either shout constant anti-Wenger rants or don’t bother going there. I am sure that as much as I wasn’t keen on it way back that they used to at least have some measure of reasoned debate. It even looked to be a bit too strong for you know who. I felt I should have dived in and rescued those poor chaps and brought them over here and away from the dark side.

  189. GoonerB says:

Sorry Peaches, I didn’t get to see it.

RA, I keep changing my mind about Per myself. Sometimes I think his timing and reading of the game is excellent but at others he seems to get himself into the wrong positions and when this happens he obviously doesn’t have the pace to recover the situation. I am not that great with defensive analysis but I would have thought it would be better to have Kos or TV push out from the back to try and make interceptions but have Per hold his position slightly deeper. When it goes wrong there seems to be a consistent theme of Per having pushed up too much. I am not sure if this is a good observation and maybe one of our regulars with some coaching badges can help out.

  195. Sheep Hagger ™ says:

This is may view on Santos .

Brazilian angered many with his request to take Robin Van Persie’s shirt at half-time but he had angered far more with his insipid displays.
Positionally reckless, unable to defend and can’t cross a ball. These are issues that shouldn’t really be part of the genetic make-up of a Premier League player.
Kieran Gibbs has easily seen off Santos’s advances and a move back to Turkey, where a number of sides appear to value him, would be best for all concerned.

    Much love

Going back over a few points I still think Szsney will be first class but IMO he needed a mentor for another season.

Sheep an offer of 2.5 million came in from turkey for Santos last month and was refused,so logic tells me he is not in Wenger’s long term plans.

I am with RA about Pers. Not that i don’t think he does a good job but is he really a Wenger type of signing.

Interesting to see how we played without Arteta and cazorla today, any thoughts

Dear Sheep – I spent many holidays in Pwhelli and love N Wales, most beautiful scenery I have seen. BTW property in Poland is very expensive, Warsaw is not much cheaper than the rest of European capitals, excluding London of course

  211. Adrian says:

Think you’re missing the point LB. What that guy meant is that the Santos transfer didn’t exactly work our for Arsenal and with the limited resources we have, and not bemoaning the fact that we bought a backup player. We have bought an expensive player that isn’t doing the job well enough (I have taken a huge disliking towards Santos ever since the shirt swapping with RVP, and his dismal performances in that game and ever since just made it worse.) Probably trying to imply that the money invested in Santos isn’t really bearing any fruits and could have been better spent on some other LB.

  212. Adrian says:

    Work out*

  213. LB says:

I agree Wenger should get it right every time.

It was a brilliant game of football today.

  214. evonne says:

LB – it was indeed. I was surprised how good Brighton were; but to be fair I didn’t know that Gus Poyet was the manager and some ex PL players went there. Should have read Raddy’s prematch before the game, not after 🙂

  215. LB says:

Arsenal beat Brighton in a thrilling encounter and by doing so keep alive Arsene Wenger’s proud record of never being knocked out in the third round throughout his long and glorious reign as Arsenal manager.

    Still here, well done?

Brighton maybe some divisions below, I am not sure how many, I don’t look that far but how ever many it is make no mistake this was no easy victory. Somewhere in the back of my mind I remember hearing that the Seagulls have been on a long unbeaten run, as I said above: I don’t do lower divisions so I am not sure how many exactly. But however many it is it makes sense as they were an extremely well organised side. It wasn’t all plain sailing, there were a couple of hairy moments when today comments would have been full of “supporters” calling for Wenger’s head rather than basking in the after glow of a great game of football with a victory to boot.

I liked the team selection, it was a perfect opportunity to give run outs to Jenkinson, Santos, Diaby and Rosicky and all did well in their own way. Jenkinson lost the ball on numerous occasions but I know you don’t want to talk about that when we can collectively bash Santos for every error, never mind that he improved as the game progressed lets just build an effigy and burn it.

I am sorry, I have just run out of time.

  216. Gooner in Exile says:

The thing i question in that Santos statement is the figure of £60k a week wages, simply put i’d find it hard to believe he was on that much, others choose to believe different, but we have already had it proved to us in the instance of Chamakh and Fiorentina that the wages oft quoted by people “in the know” was about £15k more than the wages quoted by Firoentina’s chairman in their papers. So I would apply that mark down for all those “in the know” wage lists that are on the net and maybe people wouldn’t get so upset.

Arsenal Truth (hahahahahaha) believes that Chamakh earns £60k a week, Fiorentina chairman said in July €3m (and thats why they couldn’t afford him), which equates to £45k a week. Who is more likely to be “in the know”?

I always ask in this instance what people think we should pay per week for a backup player and what quality they think we should get for the money.

You are effectively having to bribe someone to sit on the bench or make up squad numbers rather than do the thing they love on a Saturday afternoon.

  217. Oh LB I wish you’d had time to finish, I love your match reports 😉

What I loved was the fact we brought players on when we needed to score a goal and guess what??? They did 🙂

I admit that it was his looks that I was attracted to at the start but as the photo of him being hugged by supporters after he scored shows, there is a real admiration for Giroud despite what the media say. How pumped up was he, I thought he was going to explode.

I hope we sign a defender if anyone as I really can’t see that we have a problem scoring goals …….. well not this week anyway 😆

  218. Gooner In Exile says:

Even safe hands had off days:

  219. ces1ne says:

Per being a clumsy drunk woman!!!! Might be the best comment I’ve read all day, tips hat to Sheep 👍
Problem with Mertz is that his anticipation & reading/knowledge is usually great, which along with those loooong beanpole legs allows him to get a leg in on a lot of thru balls….BUT due to his oil tanker turning & general goofiness, when he gets it wrong IT LOOKS SO SO SO HORRIBLE & usually turns out quite bad for us. I like him as a backup CB, but bc of our ummmm “interesting” CB situation (by situation I mean the hit/miss form of TV/Koz & not finding the right player in the market) he’s been our most consistant defender….which is unfortunately NOT a compliment.
Solution? Just 2 suggestions from me:
1)buy a CB & move either TV or Koz to the DM spot
2)buy a DM, keep TV/Koz @CB & start working young Ignasi Miquel into the team or loan him out for experience so he can start playing regularly next season for us (I rate the young Spainard very very highly:) )
—Like I said before, I like Per as a backup CB & his knowledge will only help our young defenders, so not knocking him….I just know his limits very well from his Werder/GermanNT games & his flaws are something that stand out more playing for us bc of our style than they would in another squad.

–a side note on Per….am I the only 1 that is actually embarrassed by the lack of impact he makes when he goes into the oppositions box when we have a free kick. I know aggression isn’t his strong point, but COME ON Per, put that huge German Teutonic cranium on something, or at least stand in front of the keeper with your 9 foot frame!!!

IM NOT PICKING ON OUR PER, I swear!!! 😉

  220. evonne says:

We need a better goalie. Szczesny is getting worse all the time. Even if defenders feck up, a world class goalie would save some of the balls that Wojtek let in lately.

  221. Gooner in Exile says:

Ces1ne like the goal against Spuds?

I think most people don’t get the BFG, it is not his pace that is useful to us, thats why we have a quick partner with him. It is his reading of the game that is so important, if he really was as clueless as some suggest we would concede countless goals because of him. We don’t because in the main he never lets it get that far, he knows what his strengths are and he plays to them.

He intercepts and blocks before he has to turn and chase, and he gets it right 99% of the time. And he is the best passer out of the back four (probably the most vital skill for Wenger).

  222. He made a fantastic save early on evonne.

  223. Gooner in Exile says:

    Just watch this

And then tell me Szczesny is not a long term number 1, this is him at 18/19 playing for Brentford

  224. evonne says:

I know Michael, but for every great save he makes, he lets a goal in. Are we still thinking he is great? Well, are you? I never did. Manone was doing just fine and Iwish he stayed

  225. evonne says:

I knew you would defend him GiE 🙂 Would you say that he is becoming better and better all the time? I cannot see that; to me he is as capable of brilliance as of a complete howler. Not completely reliable as a good goalie should be

  226. Gooner in Exile says:

This is last season highlights, the double save at Liverpool which earned us CL football is still phenomenal.

  227. evonne says:

only exclamation mark showing, maybe just as well 🙂
I have asked you a question, do you see him improving his game? Be honest

  228. I see him improving. Theo is improving why shouldn’t he?

  229. Gooner in Exile says:

Evonne, goalkeeping is more than just shot stopping, it really is, as strange as that sounds.

How many howlers has Joe Hart committed this season? From memory Szczesny has committed 2 clear errors that led to goals, the one at home to Southampton, and todays goal. Neither cost us games.

He has however kept us in games with some great saves.

Again this is where our memory eludes us, Seaman has had some howlers over the years, as have all the greats, as i said to Rocky earlier it is how the keeper deals with it that is the real test of their ability, not the mistake itself.

I used to remember being perplexed as to why people though Schmeichel was a better keeper than Seaman, and it was simply his apparent shot stopping ability, i say apparent because i think it was no better than Seaman’s i just think Seaman’s positioning was so good the majority of the time that he made good saves look ordinary, and din’t have to make that many showy saves.

  230. evonne says:

Oh yeah, Theo has improved tremendously, no doubt about it

  231. evonne says:

Ok, GiE, since you are avoiding answering this question, I will ask you another – how is George doing?

  232. I don’t see that many howlers evonne. great video GIE

  233. Shard says:

Would we rather have Szczesny in goal, or 15million pound De Gea? For me it’s Szcz. He is better. The price of De Gea is just to demonstrate how much young keepers of similar potential are worth. Szczesny is developing better than De Gea, in my opinion. Although I think he could do with having a senior keeper to learn from/push him.

  234. evonne says:

you should have gone to the Specsavers Michael 🙂

  235. Gooner in Exile says:

And yes i do think he is improving, his coming for crosses is much improved (not today for the goal obviously), as is his general control of the area.

  236. Gooner in Exile says:

And George is good thanks Evonne 😀

  237. Gooner in Exile says:

Shard I am happy that Tony Roberts is a goalkeeper coach at Arsenal, i think he can teach Szczesny a great deal. He was one of my favourite keepers.

  238. Big Raddy says:

I think TPIG is a fine keeper but one who needs both pressure for his place and a backup who can improve him

  239. Big Raddy says:

Surprised no-one commented upon my photo of Brighton beach. It really was a July day last summer.

    Pearls before swine……

  240. Shard says:

I never saw him play, but that’s good if you think he can help in Szczesny’s development. Still, I can’t help but feel some real competition for his spot might help improve him further. Nothing that really stops him from being the long term number 1, or even stops him from playing now. Just an older keeper who’s experienced and solid. I do realise however, that a keeper who’s good enough and experienced enough, will generally not prepared to be a backup. Do you know how Real Madrid went about it with Casillas? What level of keepers did they have backing him up when he was doing his growing up in the first team?

  241. Shard says:

oink oink….The Hindi equivalent of that phrase involves music and buffaloes 🙂

Anyway. It’s really really late here. So it’s goodnight from me.

  242. The howler in the Southampton game was due to injury and he didn’t play for a while after that. de Gea was £20M BTW

  243. ces1ne says:

GIE, u hit the nail on the head with that one. I would love if people started putting the “Truth” part in quotes when mentioning that blog, Arsenal “Truth”

–With our injury record, some people think our backups should be very solid players, and rightly so. BUT solid players require good wages, again rightly so. What happens to that in a situation like Gibbs/BSR/etc….when the 1st choice finally beats the AFC injury plague? Im all for squad rotation, but most solid to world class players dont want/need to be rotated, unless they are in the ridiculous case of a Chelski/Citeh where they are being (over)paid. The market/wages have changed & hindsight is a wonderful thing, bc for every correct “I said Santos would be a liability, when we signed him!!”, that same person probably got a lot wrong regarding players also. All in all, it’s 1 big crap shoot & nobody gets it right all the time. We just dont have extreme consequences if we are wrong about a player/wages like clubs/managers do.

  244. ces1ne says:

GIE, I said pretty much all that u replied to me, just not sure if ur saying I’m being hard on our BFG or kind of agreeing with me.
I said Per gets it right A LOT, plus emphasized his strengths/positives, BUT due to our style of play & his partners hit/miss form his occasional errors LOOK horrible.
His goal against the spuds was the exception. With the amount of times he goes up there & his height advantage, he IMO should get a bit more, but as I said, he’s not really that aggressive type, more of a thinker.

  245. Goodnight all

It would be nice to think that I’ll wake up to a ‘Match report’ or some ‘Player ratings’ in the arsenalnuts inbox in the morning ………or a post about something else …… I don’t mind ……..

  246. Adrian says:

The simple fact that both of Brighton’s goals came from or resulted from attacks in the right flank indicates who they have targeted as and without a doubt is the weak link in the team. Jenkinson didn’t have the best of games either but come on, he was in no way in the same league as Santos. Santos gave the ball away very unnccessarily and dangerously in our own half when a simple pass would’ve suffice in more than one occasion. And don’t you just love how he takes shots from 35 yards or so with absolutely no conviction? He doesn’t even believe he could’ve scored from that far.

  247. oz gunner says:

    @ Evonne

does your hatred of Szcz know no limits? 🙂

I thought after you spoke to his Mrs on the flight you would lay off him, she could be reading after all haha.

I may be really bias but I think he is a gun. His love of Arsenal adds another notch to my love for TPIG. He may make an error of two but he’s still learning and as others have said every keeper does! Casillas was recently dropped due to poor form and he’s supposed to be the best in the world. GiE is my keeper coach and if he thinks he’s good enough, then I completely agree. Also I won’t disagree because he’s bigger than me and could beat me up!

  248. Gooner In Exile says:

Adrian maybe it was Pods defensive indiscipline they were targeting or the fact their right wing/full back combo is more productive than their left wing/full back attacking combo, problem is I don’t see enough of Brighton to say one way or the other.

I didn’t watch the game that hard, I am still catching up with workload and it was on in the corner of my stream.

I have seen both goals, only one was Santos partly to blame, that’s not to say he had a good game or otherwise.

  249. MickyDidIt89 says:

Thanks for usual quality pm. Sorry, tried to stick around long enough to enjoy, as it sets me up so nicely for the day.
Saw your comment volunteering to do a report and I thought that was plain wrong after your sterling work earlier. So you have a report from me instead.

  259. kelsey says:

    Morning all.

I have been giving the comments some thought. We get days when we really can mount a charge and score at ease (8 goals in the last 2 matches) and days when the midfield cover and defence seems very poor.
Against newcastle, reading,West ham and now Brighton we have been knocked back but come out stronger at the climax of the match and gone onto win.
yesterday was a bit of a gamble playing Rosicky,Diaby and Santos and jenkinson as between them they haven’t played much recently and giving them all the benefit of the doubt one has to make allowances for that but Diaby is just a shadow of the player and seems to be just going through the motions bar one or two exceptions and Santos is just plain awful. his day was summed up with his ridiculous attempt at goal from about 40 yards which to me was just a pot shot couldn’t care less swipe at the ball.

Corners that we get just seem pointless with the traditional high ball into the box.i can’t remember us winning one that was a goal threat.

Now back to the keeper.he definitely doesn’t seem as assured as he was but then again with an ever changing back line of defenders there has to be some responsibility taken by all and a more vocal attitude wouldn’t go amiss.

  260. I wasn’t up, just stirring, and checked on my phone to see if a knight in shining armour had arrived 😀

  261. …….and I’m still not up but I do need a coffee …….

  262. evonne says:

    Morning all
Hi Oz – I don’t hate Szczesny! But I love Arsenal and if that means we have to have a German goalie again, then be it, as long as we have a few clean sheets to our name. Pruning petunias, OMG, you have no clue, have you 🙂

Raddy – I am not sure what do you think is unusual about Brighton beach in July? Looks ok to me, same as it always did

Santos has to go, he will never make it at Arsenal.

Oh yeah, nobody mentioned Theo’s howler. After his first goal he was desperate to score another and shot when Giroud was standing almost in the goal. That could have very easily cost us a draw, not good my son

  263. kelsey says:

Morning peaches, you ignoring me as well 😉

  264. slime says:

Is anyone else not totally worried about us going into the rest of the season with the same squad we have now? Whilst I agree that a couple of quality players are needed, I’m not sure January is the place to find them. I would rather we keep the money and go hunting in the summer when players are more readily available and we have more time to find the right men. Also, if a few of those loaned out can be moved on then we will have more money and maybe more importantly, more wages to pay any new signings. The most important thing is that we have secured the majority of the players we actually want to retain to longer deals, and I feel we may just be finding our stride now that the newer players have settled in a bit. I honestly believe we will see a different team for the rest of this season.

  265. arthur mallard кря кря says:

It’s so rare for me to miss a game either on tv or live that it gives a strange perspective reading the comments and having no frame of reference to compare.

As far as I can make out, Mertesacker, Rosicky, Diaby, Podolski, Jenkinson, Koscielny, Szczesny and Santos were all pretty poor.
Thank Dennis the other three (plus subs) were on their game. 🙂

I’m looking forward to a leftfield match review from DidIt Towers.

  266. evonne says:

hi Slime – i am not worried, we have good squad. I liked what a polish commentators said about Arsenal after the West ham game: Gunners showed character tonight; the fact they have talent is undisputable. I totally agree with that and like you think that we will rocket throught the rest of the season and finish 3rd.

Buying players in Jan is weird; I said before that players available in mid season are either not wanted or are mercenaries who don’t give a damn about disrupting own team and will leave regardless. We don’t want them. I was impressed to hear that Zaha will stay with CP till summer.

  267. kelsey says:

Worried no, but a concern. Gibbs,Rosicky and Diaby track record of injuries speak for themselves and can we really rely that they will be able to string a good amount of games together.

    What’s happened to Miguel ?

having said that I doubt we will buy and it’s a straight fight between Chelsea,Liverpool, Spurs and possibly Everton and us for positions 3 and 4.

When is the 5th round draw.?

  268. evonne says:

we are better than any of those teams Kelsey

  269. Morning again to all and kelsey 😉
