Put yourself in Arsène Wenger’s position ……… select the Arsenal 1st team squad for 2012/13

This post was submitted before the news broke last night that Kyle Bartley is off to Swansea so ignore him.

It would take a lengthy surf of my memory banks to find a transfer window where Arsenal have added more maturity and strength to the team, pre-season games have shown that in Podolski, Giroud and Cazorla we have added three outstanding international players to our squad.

Of course it would not be Arsenal if we did not have a snummer saga to contend with, I think that Tony Adams must have left a curse on the Captains arm band as yet another Captain has decided to do his gardening elsewhere. This time it’s van Persie who feels that the grass at the Emirates is not being fertilized enough to meet his personal “higher than mighty” standards of green” – I’m not sure if that’s green grass or green cash?

We have proven before and we will prove again that – it’s not the player that makes the team – but the team that makes the player, when will they ever learn?

Arsène obviously knows the players skill sets more intimately than us fans but that does not leave us without an opinion on the Arsenal squad – now does it? I’ve put together a chart showing both our 1st team squad and our reserves and youth players. I pulled the data from Arsenal.com so it should reflect the current reality.

Here’s your chance to be Manager for a day and determine our 1st team squad for the 2012/13 season.

Here are the squad rules.

  1. The team must name 25 players before September 1st.
  2. The team must contain at least 8 home grown players.
  3. If the team names less than 8 home grown players then the total squad is reduced by the amount of players lesser than the eight.
  4. The team can only have a maximum of 17 over 21 year old players.
  5. The team can have an unlimited number of under 21 year old players.

These are the players:

Average age of first team players: 25

Average age of reserves/youth players: 17.94

  1. Norfolk Gooner says:

This’ll take some time, I’ll be back with my squad in the middle of next week.

  2. oz gunner says:

Good idea G5, this will take a while. Not sure why Lansbury is in the striker category.

  3. Carried over from the previous post..so Song has been told he can go and we are tracking Sahin. Vermaelen capt, Arteta vice captain – I’d opted for it to be the other way round.

Does that mean, carrying on our tradition of selling our captains every year, Vermaelen will be flogged off to Barca as a replacement for the ageing Puyol next sumnmer ?

  4. Rich Smith says:

Surely if we are only allowed 17 over 21 players Park and Chamakh miss out?

If that is the case we are very short on strikers now Per$i£ has left.

  5. oz gunner says:

Actually no i wouldn’t change a thing. The 25 players listed are pretty much the only ones you can go with.

  6. oz gunner says:

noooooooo chary, he loves Arsenal and wouldn’t want to win things at another club because it wouldn’t be the same…hold on this feels eerily familiar!

Very surprised to hear that about Song, i thought it was just the idiotic spanish press. My bloody FIFA team is in tatters!

  7. Rich Smith says:

    Woops I missed Squid.

He obviously has to be dropped.

Why the hell did we sign Park?

Was the only reason to attrack more people to buy tickets for the tour in the Far East.

  8. Exactly Oz, until the management plays hard ball with want away players TV05 could follow a well trodden path.

  9. nickynicknick says:

Kyle Bartley has gone to Swansea, so he’s out of the equation.

  10. I was going to ask how come Kyle Bartley isn’t listed as home grown, but it looks like he is leaving anyway. That leaves us with just one slot for a new player assuming we can shift Park, Bendtner & Squillacci

  11. Wubagunner says:

I think Arsenal will win trophy this year because of this squad

    Sagna Subotic Verma Baines
    Jeniks Mertis Kosci Gibbs

    Song Diaby
    M’villa Wilshere
    Coqulin Sahin (Ramsey, Arteta)

    Walcot Gervinho
    Chamberlin Rosciky

we really need to buy baines and Subotic for backup of Bartley and Djourou and we do not need Djourou in this squad, he is not good enough fr this club. if he is available, M’villa he is a good backup for song if he gets injured and Sahin on lone for Wilshere Backup and then believe me we will win not a trophy but trophyssss.

  12. Red Arse says:

I think you will find the squad numbers are limited by ‘maximums’, i.e. there can be a maximum of 25 players in the squad, there can be a maximum of 17 non-Home Grown, which by definition, means there would be 8 Home Grown players over 21 years of age in the squad.

Of course a club can have all home grown players and no non-Home Grown or any variation within those maximums.

In addition, a club can have an unlimited number of players aged under 21 years of age at the qualifying date.

The problem comes when an excellent Under 21 year old, becomes an over 21 year old and has to be included within the 25 squad players, in which case someone else has to drop out, or he has to be sold.

  13. oz gunner says:

    @ Wubagunner

do you really think Subotic would leave to play backup? He and Hummels are one of the best CB pairings in Europe atm

Plus we won’t get Sahin and M’Vila

  14. Red Arse says:

Don’t forget, a player registered with the club, such as squillaci, Bendtner, Arshavin etc, does not have to be registered with the 25 man squad.

That means unwanted players either sit on their arses all season, perhaps limited to playing cup football, or they find another club.

  15. Red Arse says:

Sorry, GN5, I forgot to say that is a fantastic schedule. 🙂

I think tho that your point 4 needs to be amended.

Age in that context is incidental as the HGP rules relate to the maximum numbers, within a squad of 25, of Non-Home Grown players (17) and Home Grown players (no maximum).

  16. LB says:

I haven’t seen the Wenger interview, did AW say that Song could leave or is that just a general view?

  17. oz gunner says:

    @ RA

good point, so next year we will have headaches with the over 21’s:

    Wilshere (homegrown) ——take over Lansbury
    Frimpong (homegrown) ——
    Yennaris (homegrown) ——
    Jenkinson ——take over Arshavin’s spot
    Galindo ——presumably sold
Campbell (back from loan) ——take over Chamakh’s spot
Denilson (back from loan) ——hopefully sold

Song goes we lose a home-grown player

  18. LB says:

Very interesting reading, I assume your point is that it is no easy task juggling a modern day squad.

  19. Hi London, this is what he said:
Asked if Song would be leaving and if new signings were on the cards, the boss stated:

“Both can happen. We have 6 or 7 players in midfield, it is an area where we have much more freedom to make decisions.”

  20. Red Arse says:

I think the HGP rules are sensible after earlier doubts, but interestingly FIFA’s ambitious attempts to increase the numbers of Home Grown players in a TEAM, called the 6 + 5 Rule, making it compulsory to include 5 Home grown players in any team have been withdrawn because they breach EU Labor laws.

FIFA have said that they WILL introduce such a requirement in the near future, which might account for Shitty and the Chavs buying up quantities of youngsters………just in case.

Now that 6 +5 rule, or similar, will be ground shaking!!

  21. LB says:

Wooo, so selling Song is a realistic possibility.

  22. Red Arse says:

    Hi Oz, 🙂

As time goes on every club are going to have to make some hard edged decisions on players, such as Bartley, as they age because the squad numbers and compositions become more and more tricky.

In a way, it explains my rather laid back attitude to the departure of RVP because in the future there will be many more movements of players coming and going, especially if the ‘6 + 5’ team rule,or its equivalent comes in.

Don’t forget the 6 + 5 rule was supposed to have started in the new season starting tomorrow. Imagine the shenanigans if it had not been put back? 🙂

Sorry about giving away your marital secrets …. as if ….. 🙂 but as Rocky is still fast asleep, I might be cheeky to him as he will never know!! 🙂

  23. Sounds like it London, especially when Wenger said that Sahin was one of the players AFC were following.

The word on Twitter is that Song has a Nikki B type arrogance about him around the training ground.
the attention from Barca has swollen his head.

  24. Rich Smith says:

What is it about Arsenal players and becoming arrogant.

All Arsenal players seem to think their better than they are when they get bigged up.

It doesn’t happy at any other big club.

Another reason why Arsenal is not a big club anymore.

  25. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Brilliant fun GN5, thanks.
From a personal point of view its also brilliant as I’ve never been bothered to get to grips with all these rules, but with your graphics, it becomes a whole lot easier.
It also answers a question I asked earlier: Frimpong is not out on loan I see.
Mmmm, last term AW thought to himself: “Ok, I have Song and Coquelin in the squad. Pingpong can go out on loan”.
    Now he stays!!!!!!

  26. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Rich Smith,
“All Arsenal players seem to think their better than they are when they get bigged up. It doesn’t happy at any other big club”
No, of course it doesn’t dear. No egos at City or anything.
    ROLFLAMOW or whatever

  27. Rich Smith says:

The point is City don’t end up selling them.

    We do.

The times of Arsenal being a big club are over.

I will continue to support them I just don’t expect anything anymore.

  28. MickyDidIt89 says:

No-one can afford to buy them off City. That’s why they cannot shift the dead wood. As for not expecting anything, relax and enjoy the ride. The trophy years will return, and in the meantime, meet up with your mates, have fun and watch great football. 89 teams’ supporters in the league would love to be in your shoes.

  29. Rich Smith says:

I understand that I just don’t know why players don’t.

No club is guarantesd trophies so players obviously only leave for the money.

Arsenal have done the best they can to keep P£r$i£ and he still walks out on them.

The club he has gone to won nothing last season.

Football is being ruined by these twats.

  30. oz gunner says:

    @ RA
haha glad to have you back. You are right, teams like chelsea and city would panic and start hoovering up youth left right and centre

    @ Micky

I agree, whenever RA or GiE explained it i was left shaking and sucking my thumb. But after the seeing the images it’s all so easy.

  31. Rich Smith says:

Seeing P£r$i£ playing in their shirt is going to be sick.

  32. evonne says:

GN5 – very well sait : “We have proven before and we will prove again that – it’s not the player that makes the team – but the team that makes the player, when will they ever learn?” I can only think of 2 players that have improvet since leaving us.

Thank you for the post GN5

Rich – sick is not the wort

  33. oz gunner says:

    @ Evonne

you should get that wort checked out!

  34. MickyDidIt89 says:

I certainly agree with your football being ruined comment (assuming you are referring to the bonkers money). Thing is, we would never offer Persie £200k a week and for four bleeding years (he’ll be earning £10M a year for at least two of those for doing absolutely nothing).
Just think how good it will feel to finish above Utd. Their midfield and defence are at breaking point.

  35. Oh dear, definiteley time to revert to calling the homesick spaniard a front bottom:

    “Cesc Fàbregas Soler ‏@cesc4official
As a friend and team mate of mine for the last 8 years i want to wish good luck to @Persie_Official and his new adventure at Man United.”

Why not say, sad to see you leave Arsneal ?

    Pahhhh !!

  36. MickyDidIt89 says:

Still prefer books with lots of pictures in them 🙂

  37. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Oh nooo Chary,
Now you on that twister thing. Nothing good comes of it. Get back into your attic 🙂

  38. Ha ha, I thought you called it Twatface Mdi89 ?

  39. MickyDidIt89 says:

Actually, mentioning books reminds me of Evonne and Peaches talking about the Shades of Grey. A few nights ago, reading in bed, my wife asked: “What are you reading”. Me:”Its called Jerusalem. Really interesting history of the place, peoples and religions. And you?”. Wife: “Book about bondage and S&M”. Me: “Oh, ok. Night then”.

  40. oz gunner says:

    @ Chary

I was ready to forgive him too, oh well back to hating him!

  41. Red Arse says:

“Wort” is definitely not the word for it! 🙂

  42. oz gunner says:

    @ Micky

lucky man! they had it on a news program down here saying how husbands all around Australia are getting lucky and asked to try different stuff because of that book. You’ll be walking around with a red ‘A’ on you arse in no time at all!

  43. tomstoned says:

destruction of Our Arsenal seems to carry on…Song our second most important player last season ..oh my…and midfielders ..c’mon wenger…rosicky injury prone..what about diaby ??has he ever played more than two games at the time…and then sahin..???why hasnt he played for Real..??..could it be injuries ??
    for a scary read…look at Arsena’s statistics playing without song..you will be surprised ;
but it doesnt really matter anymore…we’re flogging players to everyone who wants em..nomatter rivals…but like most of you fine people in here..we all have accepted that winning is NOT our ambition..all we talk about is IF we can be third or maybe fourth..my god how deep have we all sunk..old Bertie would turn over in his grave had he known what Our Beloved Arsenal have become..a selling club..in a villa sort of way…
selling our best players and buying new ones every year ..is NOT the way to build a strong team..
but i guess some Gooners are happy either way….we do love the american way..

  44. MickyDidIt89 says:

How many times does someone post a twatter ( 🙂 ) comment, only minutes later to retract it. I don’t know how many times I tell my 12 yr old daughter to stop eavesdropping. Same thing.

  45. evonne says:

Micky – correction, Peaches is reating the Shates; we both agreet that it is too raunchy for me 🙂 Now, Jerusalem book sounts goot

    Hello RA 🙂

  46. GunnerN5 says:

Morning all, just having my breakfast, I will read the comments in a little while..

    This is from Arsenal.com

Wenger – No decision made on Song future

    By Chris Harris

Arsène Wenger has yet to decide whether Alex Song will stay at Arsenal this season.

The Cameroon midfielder has been linked with a move to Barcelona but his manager insists that no bid has been received for the 24-year-old.

“This decision is not made,” said Wenger at his pre-match press conference. “No [bid has been made] and I cannot tell you more.

“I don’t know [about Song] at the moment, my focus is more on tomorrow’s game.”

Wenger says he will enter the market if necessary before the transfer window closes, but he believes that Arsenal are well-stocked in midfield.

“Midfield is a different area because we have nine or ten midfielders of top-class quality,” he said.

“Just today we have six or seven midfielders available, plus Wilshere and Frimpong who are coming back. Diaby is available again, Arteta, Cazorla, Ramsey, and Oxlade-Chamberlain now plays central midfield. This is an area where we have much more freedom to make decisions.”

  47. Gooner In Exile says:

Morning all, interesting times ahead as demonstrated by GN5s post and why Wengers job of juggling is so difficult. The only thing that could be misinterpreted in the post is the line “the team can have a maximum of 17 over 21” this should actually read “a maximum of 17 non home grown over 21”

The news that Wenger has said Song could be next to leave is worrying, especially as he is one of our Home Grown which would put us to 26 squad age (over 21) players only 7 of which are Home Grown, which basically means our maximum squad size could be 24 (plus all the under 21s) thankfully we have plenty of players with solid ability to cover.

  48. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Hi Tom,
Not sure I completely understand, but I’ll have stab. I think you mean we should go the Glazier/City/Chelsea route. Is that what you mean?
Its certainly an option, and we could sell out to Usmanov. For me, I’d be terrified of the day they pull out. I happen to think there is a ceiling to the value of a football club, and maybe Utd are right now discovering they have actually gone beyond that. If City continue to out-spend and out-trophy them for another year or two, they would be in deep deep trouble.
A kind of House Price Bubble about to go Pop.

  49. chas says:

    Excellent, GN5.

    Home-Grown (max 8)
    1 Djourou
    2 Gibbs
    3 Mannone
    4 Ramsey
    5 Szczesny
    6 Walcott

    Non-Home-Grown (max 17)
    1 Arshavin
    2 Arteta
    3 Cazorla
    4 Coquelin
    5 Diaby
    6 Fabianski
    7 Gervinho
    8 Giroud
    9 Koscielny
    10 Mertesacker
    11 Podolski
    12 Rosicky
    13 Sagna
    14 Santos
    15 Vermaelen
    16 Sahin
    17 M’Vila

    plus the others

  50. chas says:

I’ve just been looking at Podolski’s reaction to the Cologne game on Arsenal Player.
For someone who was reported as not speaking English when he signed, his English is now very good.
Sharp, intelligent, dedicated, hard-working and a hammer of a left-foot. What’s not to like? 🙂

  51. evonne says:

Chas – of course he is all that, it’s genetic 🙂

  52. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Sorry Evonne,
I meant “Shates of Grey” 🙂
Jerusalem The Biography by Simon Sebag Montefiore. Very good.

  53. chas says:

    Bontage and satomasochism. 🙂

  54. Rhyle says:

Good read – we’ll give some thought as to what our squad will be come 31 Aug!! Feeling they’ll be more comings and goings before midnight on that date…

As for Fabregas tweeting his support for RvP – it’s pretty meaningless but don’t know why he had to do it publicly…think a text message would’ve sufficed…

Frimpong – hard to loan out a player with a fecked knee…he should be fit by October, apparently

…oh…and speaking of ins and outs…according to arsenal.com’s squad news, Alex Song has a “little knock” which might keep him out of the Sunderland game…yet more confirmation that it’s bye, bye Alex!

  55. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Bingo, I have a positive.
Had we kept Persie (and Song), the twats would have returned to the Ems, which would have been a shame as the atmosphere is really improving.

  56. MickyDidIt89 says:

  57. MickyDidIt89 says:

There goes my Frimpong theory. Quick, U-turn 🙂

  58. MickyDidIt89 says:

The inclusion of Frimpong in the squad has no bearing whatsoever on the transfer, or not, of Alex Song.

  59. tomstoned says:

    Hi Micky
well one thing is for sure mate..the ffp is dead in the water but i do agree that its a difficult financial situation *out there*look at La Liga its ready to explode…still the best clubs always find a way..look at Bayern…well run club…and keeping their players and even buying big…
then again they dont have to please american reapers…and they do have ambitions…;..and im sure Bayern fans would agree settling for secong third or fourth in Bundesliga would ne like suicide-…
there is something very wrong at The Arsenal Micky..why does every top player want out..do you really believe its all about money ??…i dont..look back…lets say from 99…why did Henry leave..do you think it was *the money*..no our players leave because something isnt right..its strange really because all of them say they love The Arsenal..hmm..
one thing is for sure..im not against Wenger i forgive his little white lies …because deep down i do love the fellah..imo a genius..
i love wenger just as much as i hate the kronk and his henchman…and i think in a strange way that the lack of ambition and enthusiasm shown by our american despot…shows all over our club…
do i prefer Usmanov…well compared to being run like a streamlined american business…Yes..i do…but im not stupid it would be a risk..my hopes are this…we should look to Germany and maybe copy them…they have done a superb job in turning things around..there are many fine examples..Dortmund..Bayern etc..

finally to those who wonders why im banging on…because my emotions runs high when it comes to Our Beloved Arsenal..do i need for everone else to share my opinions..of course not..do i respect others..sure..but i will never accept that The Arsenal shouldnt go for winning..never…

telling me that it would be great for The Arsenal to end up third in the premier…or fourth..or even second for that matter well that is like a slap in the face..we’re in this to win…always…winning is the essence…its like a drug..one always want more..settling for third well thats like not living at all…..

  60. Gooner In Exile says:

Chas you snuck two new signings in and sold Song….crafty. What are you doing to Our Beloved Arsenal.

God that phrase is so annoying.

  61. GunnerN5 says:

Oz – your are correct, Lansbury is a mid-fielder.

RA, Thank you for the rule clarifications. I tried to keep it simple, but sometimes you can over simplify and lose the clarity.

LB, you got it, it’s no easy task and will become more diffficult as the under 21’s age.

  62. chas says:

Of course we’re trying to win the League, Tom.
It’s you that seems to have been convinced by the media’s portrayal that we’re only interested in 4th.

  63. chas says:

Our new captain thinks we’re strong enough to compete for the title and he isn’t someone I’d disagree with lightly.

  64. tomstoned says:

Chas mate i only wish ;..well im off leaving for Svalbard(work) tomorrow morning..im just saying this so that some folks in here dont keep thinking im only on when *bad*things are happening ;)come sat.im all behind our team nomatter who plays..c’mon you Gunners!!!!!
Chas Micky TotAl and all other fine Gooners please have a wonderful Weekend !!
last year we marked an ice bear…using red color..darn i swear it looked just like Adams 🙂

  65. Gooner In Exile says:

Tom 2 things and this why your views can infuriate me:

“the ffp is dead in the water”

“we should look to Germany and maybe copy them…they have done a superb job in turning things around..there are many fine examples..Dortmund..Bayern etc..”

Why have they turned it around? Could it be the FFP model that UEFA are now implementing? Irony is too gentler a word for those two sentences in one comment.

Newcastle/Spuds/Villa aim for 4th (if they finish 7th and up there managers tend to be safe) 4th (or CL) is the minimum requirement at Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Spuds, if we were out of CL maybe Wenger would not survive.

I actually think Wenger is doing the right thing getting shot of players who think they are bigger than the club. We have a history of players (even when we weren’t all conquering) who just signed a contract because they played for Arsenal….that was enough….some like O’Leary didn’t even bother with agents.

  66. MickyDidIt89 says:

Look at where those players go. Only Barca, Utd (both living way beyond their means) or City/Chelsea. We carry on as we are, or go the Usmanov route. I’m sticking.

  67. chas says:

Ah, Goldi Poldi interview is on youtube, too.

  68. tomstoned says:

im off so it have to be short..ill give you a better answer when i get back…but the turn around in Germany had nothing to do with the ffp mate..if you think that ffp is coming soon…well looke at Platini’s own homeground and look what is happening..PSG…and im surprised you dont get it…capitalism always find a way…all history would tell you that…

  69. MickyDidIt89 says:

Keep the faith, and only the body of those bears in red. White sleeves and legs!

  70. Adrian says:

Why would Wenger even CONSIDER selling Song who was arguably one of our best players last season to Barca when he still has 3 years on contract? That makes it TWO key first team players to barca in two years. We’ll be the laughing stock of the transfer window no doubt if this happens, which knowing Wenger and the board, is highly likely to happen. Other clubs will start to view Arsenal as a selling club and will always bully us in the transfer window until Wenger and the board take a stand and stop selling our key players every season just to balance the books. Knowing how the club operates, Song is 80% off to Barca already and I hppe that at the very least Wenger will get M’vila as a replacement and hopefully one more squad player. We have already signed 3 great, technically good players and its this season or never to push for a title, therefore Wenger HAS to at very least sign one more quality player.

  71. MickyDidIt89 says:

I’m joining Podolski and Evonne. No more “d’s” from me.
    Goot Got, must go.

  72. Adrian would you prefer we hold him down and force him to sign an 8 year contract? Maybe thats what Usmanov would do with some of his heavies.

If he wants to go, why should we keep him? If he doesn’t go this year, do we sell him next year, if he doesn’t go next year we are into RvP/Nasri situation.

All these players have a choice, they could stay…..they choose not to. If we accept transfer fee it doesn’t mean the player has to agree to move.

Anyway as others have said he will hopefully be the last of Darren Dein’s clients to ever grace our doorways and the little scrote can stop receiving back handers from Usmanov to destroy our club.

  73. Rhyle says:

Just seen the new squad numbers – Park has moved from #9 to #30…BUT…THANKFULLY…the club have offered to reimburse the thousands…no, TENS OF THOUSANDS of fans who bought Park #9 shirts. Phew! Cashback! 😉

  74. 😀 Rhyle, well there will be a few in Asia no doubt, the PL squad doesn’t have to be announced until 1 September so it doesn’t mean he is in the squad yet

  75. LB says:

The best way to look at it surely is to think that the squad has been improved by selling van Persie as we have been able to buy two players who collectively if not individually are better than him.
In the case of Song I would have thought that it would be even easier for Wenger to find a new and improved version.

  76. Red Arse says:

    Hi GIE, 🙂

Love it! Seeing such a mild mannered man get cross is such fun.

Needless to say, I completely agree with you!! 🙂

  77. Rhyle says:

True, GIE…ITK talk is that he’s massively annoyed about it (although how anyone’s found him to ask him is beyond me)…I just thought it was funny that they clarified that!

On another another note…Silvestre is back training with the Arse as he’s a free agent…credit where credit’s due…Wenger does look after his old boys…

  78. I’m like Ben Ainsley (“they won’t like me when i’m angry”) 😀

  79. LB says:

    Funny comment

  80. Silvestre is still playing? Well there’s the January loan signing sorted for when we are down to our last defender

  81. LB says:

    Silvestre is back

Rasp is going to go into melt down. ROLF

  82. LB have you seen Little Jack has got the No 10 shirt?

“It’s such an honour for me, getting the No 10 shirt again at the Club means so much to me as I wore it all through the youth teams at Arsenal.

It has a special place for all attacking or creative players. I feel proud to wear it now after some real Club legends have worn it, such as Dennis Bergkamp.”

  83. LB says:

Good luck Jack hope you make it. I still see you as a Bobby Moore though, West Ham boy and all.

  84. Rhyle says:

Wilshere on getting his mitts on the #10 shirt:

“I feel proud to wear it now after some real club legends, like Dennis Bergkamp” Robin van Whonow?!

Anyone noticed that not even an “everyone at Arsenal wishes him well for the future” has been in any of the articles? Pointed out by @afcamden on Twitter…and a good point…he’s well worth a follow, by the by…

  85. Oh dear just seen Injury updates on squad:

Kozzer and Ox out of contention
    Arteta fit
    Song and Cazorla have tests

    Other news
Frimpong 3 weeks till training (a bit ahead of schedule in Wengers words)

Jack, Bacary and Tomas are a month away from full training

  86. LB says:

The thing is GIE we can now cope with all those injuries including the Oz/Carzola worst case scenarios

  87. chas says:

I’m watching the pre-Sunderland presser on Arsenal Player.

Kos and Chamberlain out for tomorrow. Walcott could play. Arteta fit.
When asked if he would re-invest the Brave Sir Robin money, Wenger said it had already been re-invested. 🙂

Someone asked if 14-1 for the Arse to win the league was a good bet. Wenger said if he was in the journalist’s position, then yes.

    (you’ll have to log in)

  88. LB says:

14 – 1 now, the odds are falling they were 25 – 1 on Sunday.

  89. chas says:

They were 12-1 with Blue square who would match a £25 bet with a free £25, effectively making it a 24-1 shot (as 26 put it).
    I think anyway.

  90. LB says:

    Jenkinson, BFG, Vermaelen, Santos.

    ——Diaby, Coquelin, Arteta

    ——Walcott, Giroud, Podolski.

This is my punt at Wenger’s stating line-up

  91. chas says:

Here you go. Now 14-1 with Blue Square, so Brave Sir Robin leaving has seen the odds go out from 12’s to 14’s.

  92. LB says:

Thanks, I am quite pleased to say I don’t know much about betting and odds.

My depleted Arsenal wardrobe is evidence to the former. lol

  93. chas says:

    Haha re the wardrobe.
    Me neither re the betting.

  94. rhyle says:

I’d expect it to go out even further when Song’s confirmed as gone…glad I didn’t go in at 12’s…is that Blue Square double your money offer still valid, Chas?

  95. GunnerN5 says:

This is the Arsenal statement on the RVP transfer, just a simple “thanks for the past” and no good luck in the future.
If we were to read between the lines it sounds as though it was a bitter split.

Van Persie completes Manchester United move

Arsenal Football Club can confirm that Robin van Persie has now completed a transfer to Manchester United after terms were agreed between the clubs.

This ends Robin’s eight-year association with Arsenal, after joining the Gunners from Dutch side Feyenoord in May 2004.

During his time with Arsenal, Van Persie made a total of 278 appearances for the Club, scoring 132 goals, including 37 from his 48 appearances last season.

His fantastic performances during the 2011/12 campaign resulted in the PFA (Professional Footballers’ Association) and FWA (Football Writers’ Association) Player of the Year awards, together with the Premier League Golden Boot.

Van Persie also became a regular in the Holland team during his time with Arsenal, making 68 appearances to date.

Everyone at Arsenal would like to thank Robin for his contribution during his time with the Club.

  96. VCC says:

Chas 1 :40 Thats a bummer I took 12-1. I thought it was a good bet at the time.

  97. VCC says:

Chas, hows your second team QPR going to get on this season. (he he )

  98. chas says:

    Haha, VCC.
Someone suggested Ricky Gervais could make a new series of An Idiot Abroad if Barton goes to Marseille.

My second team is Arsenal reserves.
I don’t mind QPR staying up (as long as they don’t beat us again). 🙂
I know you just wanted to see this again really.

  99. Gooner In Exile says:

Chas the next time a senior player leaves Arsenal that hippo should be the next days headline post

  100. AndI R says:

Hope Mr Wenger invests some of the 24 million in a keeper as the two we have are only fair to average.
We have not had a decent keeper since Safe-Hands Seaman left.

  101. chas says:

So Andi, Mr Invincible Lehmann was not decent?

  102. chas says:

  103. “There’s no hard feelings between me and the club” We’ll see about that matey.

  104. chas says:

  105. chas says:

    Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski

  106. Norfolk Gooner says:

Wilshire has been given the No.10 shirt, Podolski the No. 9 and Park has been relegated to No 30.

Where does that leave our Korean enigma?

  107. evonne says:

GM @3:02 – ton’t to anything silly when you are in Mancunia, Michael, he ain’t worth it

No hart feelings??!! Feck off you filthy bastart! Stubs us in the back ant thinks there are no hart feelings?! Stupit front bottom

  108. evonne says:

Norfolk – he toesn’t really exist. Gimmick to sell shirts in Asia

  109. Really Vile Person: “I’m thrilled to wear the no.20 shirt made famous by Ole Gunnar Solskjær. I hope that I can be as successful a substitute as him”

  110. dandan says:

A thought for those gooners who are still angry or hold grudges.

    If you’re holding a grudge
    And won’t let it go
    Something will happen
    About which you should know

    While you’re holding on tight
    Harboring ill will
    The grudge keeps on growing
    Your heart it will fill

It will feed on your spirit
    And take over your mind
    Eating away at your thoughts
    Until soon you will find

    All the anger and bitterness
    You have succumbed to
In the grudge meant for another
Will come back to bite you

    Poem by Carol Gioia

  111. Big Raddy says:

Gn5. Good stuff on a subject I still have not fully understood.

Why has Park been given a squad number? Perhaps he will be our secret weapon.

  112. Red Arse says:

I was walking in Central Park with Rocky some weeks ago, when I said to him, “Look, there’s a dead seagull!”.
He looked up and scanned the sky and then said, “Where?” 🙂

  113. evonne says:

Nice poem Mr Tandan, but I tisagree. I think SS is right in saying that that bitch Karma will take care of the Really vile Person

Are you back from the funeral? Always sat for those left behint 😦

  114. dandan says:

Yes I am Evonne, she had a fine send off and soon we are off to our favourite Indian restuarant for a banquet.

  115. kelsey says:

It’s just all too much for me. my thoughts go out to Wenger. How can he build a squad when year after year this happens.
How many managers could have sustained a top 4 finish in this modern era or crazy inflated wages and players who have absolutely no loyalty at all.

Kissing the badge then feck off for money, money, money .again and again

Sorry GN5, you put a lot of work into your post but it seems to have been over ridden by today’s events.
I hope Song goes and then we are rid of Darren Dein. How can a a son try and destroy our club when his father was instrumental in bringing in Arsene Who ?

I take this personally as Arsenal are part of my life and I regard as my family. I knew RVP would go to follow the band of gold but it still bloody hurts.

  116. Illybongani says:

Song has left the club, Talksport are saying. What is going on? All I can think is Arsene is trying to emulate Barca with an Arteta, Cazorla, Wilshere axis…surely Sahin must be coming now?

  117. Red Arse says:

    Hi Illy, 🙂

Not seen it reported anywhere else. looks like it is going to happen tho from all the whispering and innuendo.

Song must have really pee’d Arsene off, somehow.

  118. Rasp says:

90% certain Song has gone (Lee Dixon has tweeted it) – now is the time to see if we mean business. Sahin still hasn’t signed for pool. Not only would he be very good for us he’d also be very good for pool who could be one of our big rivals so 2 reasons to snap him up.

  119. Illybongani says:

It’s turning into real cull….but why are B52, Park and Squidgy still there? And the meercat? There must be more on their way out.

  120. Rasp says:

You know the reasons they aren’t illy – wages 😦

  121. Illybongani says:

    Can’t be wages Rasp…Arsene is a financial genius, isn’t he…?

  122. Rasp says:

No he’s a wonderful artistic thinker – but unfortunately the rest of mankind is on a slightly different wavelength as just proven by RvP. A Utopian ideal of everyone being equal is laudable but unfortunately goes against human nature.

  123. Red Arse says:

Are you coming out against existentialism then, Rasper? 🙂

  124. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Oooo ‘ello

  125. Song’s gone? Good

evonne you slopped a “d” into tandan

  126. MickyDidIt89 says:

To my mind the only reason for getting Sahin would be because he’s free on loan. Its a very good reason, but not really a player we are desperate for. Unlike Lucas Buglia, about whom connecting stories are once again emerging. Now that would make us very strong indeed.
For those that don’t know, he’s hard as nails, Argentinian and lives on raw meat.

  127. Oh no, I’ve been so busy today and you’ve all had so much fun ………… Come on spill the beans, Song has gone!!!!

  128. johnnie nyc says:

im just sayin..if song goes.. he had better be replaced…i think it can be an upgrade if we get one of the names out there. but shouldnt we be careful with the timing of the transfers? we are looking a little thin in midfield this week with injuries

  129. Red Arse says:

Ooooo ‘ello back, Micky. You got your trousers rolled up to your knees then? 🙂

  130. MickyDidIt89 says:

Funny story 🙂 but did you really see Rocky in NY? Is that where you have been?

  131. MickyDidIt89 says:

That’s me being camp, not a flippin’ freemason 🙂

  132. MickyDidIt89 says:

Are you going to the ticket office before lunch? I’ll be at the one by Armoury Sq at 12:40.

  133. Rasp says:

Now now Micky, you’ve seen the light about the Pod, how can you question my judgement on Sahin 😆 A midfield 3 of Arteta, Cazorla and Sahin (Jack to jump in as soon as match fit) woud be a mix of artistry, intelligence and hard graft – perfect!

Ramsey is the player I can see being sidelined.

But I will state here and now that I don’t expect us to sign anyone in place of Song – book balancing and all that boring stuff 😦

  134. MickyDidIt89 says:

I make that 1-1 between us then. You’d be right on Podolski and I’d be right on the two from Persie, Theo and Billong.
Mind you, Giroud is going to be the bigger hit 🙂

  135. Illybongani says:

A week ago I thought we had a squad that would at least compete this year, if not win it. Two steps forward, three steps back…normal service is resumed at the Arse!

  136. MickyDidIt89 says:

Sorry, too arty. Arteta, Buglia and Cazorla. Now we are talking comfortably the best midfield in the country.

  137. Micky – I am going to the ticket office before lunch. I have to collect from the South West one opposite entrance S, I was going to try to be there about 12.30. Shall we walk from the stadium together to lunch? 😉

  138. ……… that way we’ll be able to talk before we eat 😆

  139. Big Raddy says:

Having seen the difference between the first and second halves v Koln, I do not think we will miss Song.

  140. Big Raddy says:

Oh stop it you two ….. Get a Room

  141. RockyLives says:

    It’s true Micky.

We were walking through Central Park discussing Proust when the big fella started going on about a dead seagull.

I looked up for ages but couldn’t see it. I kept asking him to point it out but he said I was flogging a dead horse, which confused me even more.

  142. MickyDidIt89 says:

Great. Lets mobile each other about 12:30.

  143. 12.30 is it 🙂

  144. MickyDidIt89 says:

    He’s bonkers in real life?
Hopefully meeting your gang for a drink after the game.

  145. RockyLives says:

In real life he is quite a surprise.

I certainly wasn’t expecting such luxurious facial hair. Or a pipe.

But, notwithstanding his American tendencies, he is a gentleman to a fault. Are you familiar with the Wodehouse character Psmith? Imagine him twice as large with an American twang and that’s your man.

  146. Red Arse says:

Micky it was worse than that even.

Rocky said let’s go get a pizza. The guy asked if we wanted it cut into 4 or 6 pieces. After much deliberation Rocky said, “Better make that 4 slices; I am not hungry enough to eat 6 pieces”.

I blame the Canucks for corrupting him! 🙂

  147. RockyLives says:

I’m sure you’ll find H and co in good form.

Hoping to be over soon myself.

  148. 123 says:

And there goes song. Goodbye and good freaking riddance. So sick of this.

  149. chas says:

    Haha, ‘Song has a knock’.

Tit you watch the press conference?
Arsene sait that we have plenty of mitfielters incluting Alex Oxlate Chamberlain who is now a central mitfielter.

  150. I’m watching mutv’s robin van gashface’s press conference. Is he trying to fool us, the press or himself. What a piece of shit.

  151. Red Arse says:

I can confirm it was tefinitely his mit that was toing the fielting, thank gootness, those feet of his are sooooo cold!!

  152. RockyLives says:

When Redders and I finally parted I hoped to use a little of his local New York to get me on my way.

“What’s the fasted way to get to the Brooklyn Bridge?” I asked him.

“Are you on foot or travelling by car?” he answered.

    “By car.”

    “Well, that’s the fastest way.”

Then with a puff on his pipe, a flourish of his beard and a jaunty wave he was off into the Manhattan dusk.

  153. rhyle says:

Tomorrow…Hen & Chickens for a couple of beers…then over the bridge for a goat curry then back to Block 13, North Bank to watch the might Arsenal.

    Been too long.

    Cannot wait…

  154. chas says:

I’m loving existentialist, abstract AA (minus the ‘t’s) 🙂

  155. chas says:

You’ll have to come to the Arsenal Tavern on Blackstock Roat sometime for a beer.
    Goat curry, yum yum.

  156. When I was with him I asked “is that the sun or the moon in the sky?”

“no idea I’m a stranger around here myself”

  157. chas says:

Tennis knows what overseas bloggers must make of these comments. 🙂

  158. RockyLives says:

    GM 🙂

  159. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Tennis knows
    Genius ROLF LAMOW

  160. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Great comments.
    Beer then goat curry. Nice.

  161. LB says:

Has Song gone? Let me pop over to Le Grove, if they are running round naked, dancing in the streets and screaming uncontrollably, I know the answer is yes.

  162. MickyDidIt89 says:

Really hope Cazorla is playing. Where was his midweek?

  163. chas says:

I know you’re bowling a maiten over tomorrow, but where is the Tavern witget?

  164. MickyDidIt89 says:

Don’t you come back with any revolting habits 🙂

  165. LB says:

Where do you go for Goat Curry? Do you recommend the place?

  166. chas says:

Central America, Micky, but he looks refreshet today.

    Santi Cazorla and Mikel Arteta

  167. MickyDidIt89 says:

Actually LB, I’d bet they are going to be seriously confused. Do they moan about us being a selling club if he goes, or moan about him being an Arsenal player if he stays? Oh, what the heck, moan anyway.

  168. MickyDidIt89 says:

Oh crikey chas, that is a long way for a footballer. Damn.

  169. MickyDidIt89 says:

Me done. Till match day. Adieu.

  170. We’re Arsenal fans and we’ve got a game tomorrow. How cool is that? 🙂

  171. evonne says:

GM – I can copy ant paste ‘d’, but it is a heatache ant I cannot be arset. I mate an exception for Tantan for obvious reasons. New laptop still not teliveret, me not impresset

Rocky – so you ant RA really met??!! Wow, that’s interesting! How olt is he? Hantsome? Hair ant pipe I titn’t expect either

Song’s gone to Barca, I can live with that. But that front bottom on the news is toing my heat in, I ton’t want to get over it, I want to hate him

“Listening to the little boy insite me, what toes he wants” – shitheat, what is he talking about, trying to be romantic, feck off you bi*ch

  172. Chas
I think they’ve photoshopped thier legs in that picture. They look like midgets (or do I mean dwarves?)

  173. We have a lot in common evonne. Hate is good 🙂

  174. chas says:

    Santi is vertically challenged. 🙂

    Here’s the current thinking.

  175. LG takes ages to loat sinced they stoppet using Wortpress

  176. chas says:

  177. chas says:

They can’t use wortpress, gm, and still get pait a fortune for atvertising.

  178. JG Hasn’t chnged since I last went on. There are people who wont be happy til jabba takes over then the first sign of trouble they’ll slag him off

  179. evonne says:

Hate is love? Great, I’m in love with the man that set himself up for a fall.
I cannot unterstant how can he, 2 tays after he gave up the captain’s armbant, he is arm in arm with the enemy, smiling, hopeful, full of it. Jutas, poinsonet retart

Or is he acting, noboty is that heartless. He must know we are hurting, tit we really mean nothing to him??

  180. They used to pride themselves on no advertising. I don’t blame them though. If my blog ended up full of people like that I’d want to make money out of it. It looks less nasty now though. Geoff will be well pleased if song goes. He’s never liked him.

  181. he’s a cund evonne

  182. evonne. Have you watched his press conference?

  183. James Duffield tweeted: “Cannot believe you are moving to Manchester (what a s**t hole) .’’

That’s from a list of abusive tweets to van rapists wife.

    What’s wrong with that tweet?

  184. rhyle says:

Used to drink in the tavern before my dad (who comes over for home games from Herefordshire) started to park on Canonbury Road…Highbury Corner for me at the moment…Will definitely jump into the tavern at some point this season, though as I miss bumping into Rory McGrath in there and making random Chelmsford 123 gags at him…

  185. chas says:

Nowt wrong with the content of the tweet, but why send it to his wife?

  186. rhyle says:

LB – Goat Curry is from a stall outside a house on Drayton Park, literally around the corner from Arsenal Station and opposite the ticket office / bridge. It’s good, but get there early as it’s very popular!

  187. Don’t know chas but I thought it a valid question. My son is going to Uni ther in September and I have to go. It really is a shithole.

A friend of mine was at a part and spoke to Noel Gallagher on Saturday. He told my friend that “City will piss the league this year” My friend said he couldn’t tell him he was a united fan because he was embarrassed about supporting them and coming from Kentish Town. That sums up the glory hunting wankers. (My mate is ok though) 🙂

  188. I grew up with curry goat. Love it really spicy

  189. There isn’t one home match on other than a Saturday til at least mid October. I’ll have to take a day off for the chav game

  190. RockyLives says:

I’ll tell you what, I don’t mind wandering round the Big Apple with Redders, but I’m never going to his house again.

Last time I was there he said he’d give me fifty quid if I painted the porch.

Of course I said “yes”. He told me the paint and brushes were in the garage.

I came back to the house half an hour later and said I was finished. I couldn’t understand why he looked so confused.

Then, when I said: “Anyway you big eejit, it’s not a Porch – it’s a Ferrari” he started chasing me with a big stick.

  191. chas says:

Rocky was there for his college days and I think it’s fair to say that he loved it.
Maybe staying in England means the family won’t have to move.

  192. rhyle says:

Maybe it was a sympathetic comment to his wife? There’s no context…kind of a “sorry you to have to move to that shithole Manchester…wish you were staying here…think you should divorce your husband and sue him for spousal abuse…” thing.

  193. evonne says:

GM – yes, wachet it ant threw up. Psycho, hate him

  194. chas says:

    Ah, Rocky, there you are.
Is Manchester a shithole for a student?
    Or even for a multi-millionaire footballer’s wife?
Alderley Edge is where your digs were, correct? 🙂

  195. Slimgingergooner says:

Wouldn’t say no to Sahin on loan and a deal for Dempsey. Where’s all this Song’s gone news coming from?

  196. RockyLives says:

I was a young man, first time away from home, city full of students, Buzzcocks in their prime… Of course I had a great time.

But I never took to the place really. Bunch of whiny, moaning bar stewards. And the locals hated the students and would give them a lot of grief. Fortunately a few of my mates were hard as nails (couple of Geordies and a couple of Belfast boys) so we never had too much trouble, though I know many who did.

My (Irish) dad had a soft spot for Utd because he adored George Best, so when I went up there, in the absence of being able to watch the Mighty Arse, I thought I would go and watch Utd now and then.

I went a couple of times, but quickly realized that the authentic Manchester club was Citeh, so I went to them more often.

  197. Gooner In Exile says:

Didn’t anyone think the writing was on the wall for Song when he started on the bench in Cologne.

  198. Slimgingergooner says:

What about getting Affelay as part of the Song deal?

  199. chas says:

Thanks Rocky, so it is a shithole. 🙂

    Selling Song. 🙂

  200. RockyLives says:

    Yes 😀

  201. chas says:

    Right, offski for me.
See you in the Tavern anyone that’s lucky enough to be going.

  202. Roland says:

Song doesnt appear in todays training photos either. Damn.

  203. LB says:

Szcezney started on the bench against Cologne.

There is a lot of noise coming from the Barcelona mouth piece El Mundo Deportivo.

But that is as believable as any of our red tops.

  204. Roland says:

Jesus, have you read Van Persie’s and Fergie’s comments. Ive never felt so dirty to see an explayer smiling in a new shirt since Cole and i’m not sure why.

You’re a good bunch, arsenalarsenal, reading your comments is helping me reason. Im excited for te season.

  205. LB says:

If Song stays then great, if he wants to go then we will get an even better player to take his place.

  206. Rocky
I once had tea with Pete Shelley at his mums house in manchester.

  207. LB says:

Just one big sleep to go.

  208. I think I’ll be up all night thinking about it. Giroud, Santi, podolski and Arteta’s back!

  209. glic says:

What an effing day in Cornwall, 14 hours and 300 miles, weather warnings, floods, car jams and now we have no Song, what we gunner sing ?.
Got home to listen to the traitor on BBC Sport, ” Listen to the little boy inside me, what does he want ?, screaming for Manchester United “, Bollocks, the little boy inside of you is screaming ,” Bad man making me do naughty thing`s , I want my mummy ! “. You f**king Paedo. Robin van Paedo.
Where the f**k did all the new injuries come from ? . What , are they fighting over van Paedo`s treatment table ?.
Just an Idea, When Raddy does his Pre-match, cant we have a poll on it, on what position will we finish ( 1-20 ), as it`s the first game ?. Go on, everyone likes a poll !. 🙂
Still cant believe I`ve done 300 miles around the little county today, f**k me the whole coastline of Cornwall is about the same miles !.
Off to sleep , as that amount of time driving takes a lot of concentration.

  210. We’ll be first or second glic and we’ll win a cup.

  211. RockyLives says:

I would love to hear that Pete Shelley story one day when we meet up.

I’m with you on predictions – we’ll be first or second and we’ll at least get to the CL semis.

  212. goonermichael says:

I don’t remember much of it Rocky. I was in a band supporting Pete Shelly at Manchester Uni. We were all in her front room in a terraced street somewhere. Pete Shelly’s boyfriend was there too. Pete Shelly seemed a really nice bloke.

  213. Red Arse says:

You rascal. I well remember you painting my car. But you did not finish telling what happened afterwards.

Do you remember asking me if you could have a ride, and I let you drive around Manhattan?

I recall you being outraged when the traffic cam flashed when you were driving past it so slowly. Around the block you went and the camera flashed again.
Your anger changed to amusement when you went around and again past the camera at 15 mph and still it flashed. Same thing when you went around again at 10 and 5 mph.

It was too bad when you got 5 citations for driving without your seatbelt. Heheheh love it! 🙂

  214. Rasp says:

So its between Sahin and Bigia for Song’s replacement (if any). Biglia is about £8m and Sahin would probably cost more than that if we wanted to buy after a year’s loan.

  215. Red Arse says:

Oh well, it’s bye bye time. Nite all. 🙂

  216. Rhyle says:

You know the worst thing about RvP going to them? My Newsnow feed looks like I typed in “Man Utd” and not “arsenal”…mildly nauseated…

  217. goonermichael says:

  218. RockyLives says:

    Nite Redders 🙂

  219. goonermichael says:
  220. Gooner In Exile says:

If we think about our current 1st team squad:

3 have arrived this summer (Cazorla, Pod, Giroud)
6 arrived last summer (BFG, Arteta, Santos, Ox, Gervinho, Jenkinson)
4 have signed new contracts in the last year (TV, Kozzer, Rosicky, Djourou) 1 more is hopefully about to…(Theo)
6 are academy products (Wilshere, Gibbs, Yennaris, Coquelin, Szczesny, Mannone)

At least one question that can’t be asked of those 19 players (20 if Theo signs) is “do they want to wear the shirt?”

That’s a good core of players who want to be with the Arsenal and have proven as much in the last 12 months. Now we need to find a unity on match day and we are off and running.

Hope you all have a fun time at the game tomorrow, I am picking up my new car, and going to Kiddicare …..hopefully out by 3 to check the AM radio reception!

  221. Rhyle says:

Anyone signed up for any Fantasy Football leagues this year?

  222. goonermichael says:

I’ve done one but I’m useless. designed a great kit though. Pink and green hoops

  223. Slimgingergooner says:

Sky reporting that Song has said goodbye to players.

When Fabregas left, Wilshere came through as ours and England’s next new hope. I wonder if Wenger is hoping for the same from Coquelin? Personally, I would like to see Sahin brought in on loan. It would give us an adequate replacement, but it also gives Wenger time to look at other options.

  224. richie says:

Not worried even slightly that Song might leave. Thankfully RvP has left before seasons start and for a reasonable amount too! Its probably a problem for many that he´s gone to the Manx but I can´t imagine he´ll repeat the season he had last year for us! Moreover I struggle to see him linking up with Rooney to produce a great stike force, I´m waiting to be proved wrong! I like the look of us this year more than last. I hope we start off firing! I´m with you GIE I´m looking forward to our start!

  225. richie says:

    P.S I´m back south without a net connection……………yet

  226. Rhyle says:

If there’s enough of us, GM, one of us should start a league…just for fun (and maybe a beer)…

  227. oz gunner says:

Not that worried either (although I did like it when verm charged forward Song could drop into his spot and we still had a quality CB there). I liked Song for his versatility if anything but Coquelin is better both technically and energy wise! He is a fighter who will run all day!

The RVP’s comments are a disgrace. At least Cesc thanked Arsenal and the fans ect, what did he do? ‘no hard feelings’ what the hell! Why would he have no hard feelings for Arsenal? Sorry that the new contract we offered didn’t include you being assistant manager like you wanted!

  228. Gooner In Exile says:

Rhyle we normally glacé Fantasy League (IrishGunner set it up) on the right hand side the big PL icon should take you to it.

  229. GunnerN5 says:

Arsene sums up, how on reflection, I feel about the whole situation. But I’m still offended by the comments attributed to Robin

Robin van Persie was professional to the last minute’

    By Rob Kelly

Despite his disappointment at losing his captain, Arsène Wenger has hailed Robin van Persie’s professionalism during his time at the Club.

The Dutch striker completed his move to Manchester United on Friday after making it clear he would not extend his stay at Emirates Stadium.

Wenger says the sale is part of the “brutal reality” of top-level football, but says supporters should not forget Van Persie’s contribution down the years.

“I am not a specialist on time healing but there will be a frustration [among some fans] of course,” the Frenchman said. “He has played for us for eight years, you have to respect what he has done for our club, what he did last year.

“This is a situation that is a completely brutal reality of professional sport. Robin was captain of the team last year and I give him credit until the last minute of the whole season [because] he fought like mad.

“For me that is to be professional. He comes in afterwards and wants to go? I don’t like it. But that is being professional again. But being professional until the last minute of his stay at the club.

“He gave 100 per cent and last year he kept us [up] there – it is a miracle we finished third. A big part of the miracle is down to him and you have to give him credit for that.”

While Wenger is “concerned” about losing players to clubs offering huge salaries, he believes the implementation of Financial Fair Play regulations means it is a short-term problem.

“It is a concern,” he admitted. “But you say we live outside of reality? No, we live in the economic reality that other clubs do not. There are some things we cannot afford to do, it is as simple as that.

“Honestly, I think it is a short-term problem – the world cannot go on like this. You cannot imagine that the world will go on just splashing money out without any return because people will get tired of that as you’ll only have a few clubs competing with each other.

“[Financial Fair Play] will make a big difference, how quickly I cannot answer because I am not responsible for putting it in place.”

  230. rhyle says:

cheers, GiE…is there a pin for the league or something else to join?

  231. oz gunner says:

good idea rhyle. need an AA league or something up n running

  232. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Match Day 🙂 🙂 🙂
Off to get train. Mobile signal permitting, catch you for the Big Raddy. Everything is as it should be.

  233. dandan says:

A friend in the city who does have good contacts, gave me this opinion last night. Dein having agreed terms with Barcelona for Song has been using it to try to up the price; Wenger has had enough made a stand, called his bluff and is prepared to let the player go, decision time for Mr Song it would seem.

  234. Gooner In Exile says:

Morning all, Rhyle/Oz there is a League and there is a pin but I’m buggered if I can find the pin, I’ll see I can get hold of Irish on twitter and be back with the pin.

  235. Gooner In Exile says:

Oh how football has changed….take an iPad to the game!?!?

  236. Gooner In Exile says:

Very interesting DanDan. I said a while back that I hoped Arsene would sit the squad down and ask them for honesty, want to stay….great, want to go….there’s the door. Like I said with those players listed, plenty of players have demonstrated they want to be at the club, I’m happy with them, and it makes it a lot easier to get behind them.

  237. Gooner In Exile says:

After doing done very site specific searching including the terms “IrishGunner” “pin” “fantasy” on this site I came up with this pin:

To use with the Official Barclays Fantasy League.

  238. oz gunner says:

cheers for that GiE, much appreciated. Unfortunately the code when entered says ‘this is not a valid league code’

    @ Dandan

thanks for the info. Very happy Arsene has taken a stand to these shenanigans

  239. chas says:

    Morning all,
    I think that’s last season’s, GIE.
It’s what I get if I hover the cursor over the Fanasy premier league widget.

The page for this season’s is like this.

So I’d imagine it would have 148406 in the code.

  240. evonne says:

    morning all
I am going to sent a message to Irish via Facebook

I was more excitet about the new season last week than I am now 😦 Little girl insite me is crying, it is not fair, not fair !!!

  241. chas says:

Irish won’t be up until the pubs open! 🙂

  242. chas says:

peaches and phone is the best idea.

  243. Morning all 🙂 😛 😀

    I’ll text her shall I 🙂

Ooooh football, can’t wait, have some chores to do, back in a while

  244. chas says:

    As if by magic…..

  245. LB says:

Just to be sure, when you say “has been trying to up the price” do you mean that Dein has been trying to get other clubs involved?

  246. chas says:

I assumed he meant up the price as in attempting to get Song a new contract at a higher rate per week.
“Barca will pay him this much, so shouldn’t Arsenal at least match it” kind of thing.

  247. evonne says:

Peaches – to the chores inclute 20 lengths in your pool 🙂

  248. LB says:

It makes a lot of sense what you say as Wenger’s stance in this case is very different. Normally we would expect AW to say that Song isn’t going anywhere which is code for: you are going to have to up your offer.

If as you say Barcelona have agreed terms then it seems to me there is a very likely chance of this happening.

I unlike some expect a new signing if he goes.

  249. LB says:

    Morning Chas

Ah, I see what you mean, thanks I don’t know why but that didn’t cross my mind.

  250. evonne says:

GN5 @1:33 – next we will hear that Tarren Tein is a Gooner ant toes his utmost best to support the Club

    Lonton – a mitfielter or a tefenter?

  251. LB says:

    M’Vila or Sahin

  252. evonne says:

    M’Vila – tefensive mitfielter
    Sahin – mitfielter
    I’t prefer another tefenter

  253. goonermichael says:

    It’s Chriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiistmaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssssssssssssssss

  254. rhyle says:

Morning guys…confident, excited and tired…oh…so…tired. Hot, sticky nights, first day of the season (and possible new signing) excitement plus Irish can’t-cope-with-any-kind-of-heat equals about 2 1/2 hours.

Still…beer + football makes this boy anything but dull…

Lot of talk about Angel Rangel coming in this morning?

  255. rhyle says:

May still be half asleep but just heard Stuart Pearce say something about touching 8, 9, 10 year olds on SSN…with a smile on face that was…disturbing…

  256. Rasp says:

Morning LB, I’m not sure M’vila is still on the cards (he’s too expensive) but maybe either Sahin or Biglia

  257. oz gunner says:

Bugger, still no luck with the code

definitely Sahin for me. How does it go though in terms of buying at the end of the loan. Is it a set fee agreed before the loan starts, or if he is valued at 10 million but he smashes it and they want 25million, would we have to pay that?

  258. LB says:

Having not taken Song’s departure seriously until now I have not kept track with any great conviction of his potential replacements.

So it seems that M’Vila’s price might be too high now?

I am guessing that Sahin is still a loan possibility but we want an option to buy and fix the price now.

I don’t now anything about Biglia.

  259. rhyle says:

Right – I’m off…gym then the drive to the Arsenal. Awesome. Butterflies like a small child. The kind that screams “you’re a lifelong Arsenal fan with a season ticket you lucky bastard” instead of “even as a child it was always Barca or Man Utd, even though I spent my childhood wearing an Arsenal shirt”. The lying shit.

Still…time to forget all that nonsense and move on…Podolski? Cazorla? Maybe Giroud? Don’t mind if I do!

  260. chas says:

Just about to get picked up.

  261. Rasp says:

Here’s what Sky Sports has to say about him LB

We just really need someone to do a job for the team. Sahin is the most talented but looks a bit too much like Cazorla (although he’d still be my first choice).

When looking at prospective midfielders I usually focus on how many goals they’ve scored but in this case I’m not sure that is relevant – how many did Gilberto get?

Biglia only gets about 4 goals a season but does like to defend so maybe he’s the sensible option since Cazorla can supply the creative play and assists we’ll lose in Song and a lot more.

  262. Red Arse says:

    Morning Folks, 🙂

    to One and ALL

  263. LB says:

    Thanks for that Rasp

Very interesting, seems like there are plenty of options available.

  264. kelsey says:

    Morning all.

Let’s hope it’s a good season.Reduce the gap of 19 points and concede less and we will be there or there abouts.

For those of you meeting up today love and cuddles from me.

I couldn’t second guess the team that will start but Santi having been in Peru midweek I doubt will start. On the other hand it would be great to see a non injured Diaby in full flow.

  265. Rasp says:

Morning RA, same to you 🙂

I haven’t seen you on for a while – what have you been up to?

My excuse is just busy with work etc.

  266. Irish thinks that our league should still be up and running, has anyone tried to get to our Arsenal Arsenal league through the link in the side-bar?

  267. Rasp says:

Hopefully our chances of replacing Song (he hasn’t gone yet so a bit premature) will be improved by the impending departure of Bendy for something in excess of £6m

  268. LB says:

Who is in the running for Bendtner?

  269. dandan says:

Hi Guys as Clarification. Upping the value of Songs contract even though it has time to run. Think it will happen Bye bye Songo

  270. Rasp – can I have my legs back please 😉

  271. LB says:

    Morning Kelsey

Yes, that is also my guess: Diaby to start with Cazorla on the bench.

  272. Big Raddy says:

Had to cut and paste and keep changing the post thanks to developments. Serve me right for writing it yesterday and not getting up early as usual.

  273. Big Raddy says:

I disagree. Cazorla will start because Song won’t … Or will we see Coquelin?

  274. oz gunner says:

    @ LB

according to him: Every team (only wants champions league football though).
Reality: No one with his wages.

According to the tabloids: Swap deal with AC with Mexes going the other way. That’s all i’ve read recently. As if a French international getting first team starts would come to be our 4th choice. Not to mention he is very overrated. Lazy journalism at it’s best

  275. Rasp says:

Looks like one of the Milan teams …. what is happening to iItaian football?

  276. Rasp says:

Morning Raddy, hope you didn’t mind me taking Song out of your team as it’s pretty certain he won’t even be on the bench. As LB says, its very rare for AW to say a first team player can go …. he must be seriously pissed that another of his protégés is kicking him in the teeth.

  277. Big Raddy says:

I agree and make reference to it in the pos, but going further ….. this is different to RvP because RvP always showed exceptional talent. Song was a piece of coal who was compressed into a diamond thanks entirely to AW’s belief and work. The man is an ingrate and should be told to sling his hook – perhaps even relegate him to the bench for a season, we can still get good money next summer.

It is time the clubs played hardball.

  278. Big Raddy says:

RAsp. No probs – stopped me looking more of a fool than normal

  279. How beautiful the Emirates is going to look today 🙂

  280. Song is like the last kid to play a trick on the teacher, the one that really gets into trouble …… 🙂

  281. Hope Theo is holding a pen when he sees AW today …..

    Look my legs are back!!!!!!!

  282. Big Raddy says:

    I love your legs…..

  283. oz gunner says:

    @ Peaches

Micky said they never left! Also get the match day coats out we have pockets to hide in!

  284. Rasp says:

    Sorry, I almost forgot 😆

    …. New post ……

  285. Emz says:
