Kagawa bout it!?

With the departure of Cesc and Nasri, no matter what you think of the players, it’s obvious that our goals from the midfield area have reduced. Whether this be down to the injury of Wilshire, or the lack of width provided by the full backs, I don’t know. But, with Arshavin looking increasingly on his way out, what has become clear is that Arsenal are in need of an attacking midfielder/wide player who can create and score goals in equal measure. So let’s have a look at the players capable of filling that Cesc shaped hole:

Xherdan Shaqiri
Age 20
FC Basle
Games 14(0)
Goals(assists) 4(1)
Value £15m-£25m

Was one of the main reasons why Man U are going to be playing Europa League football this year (couldn’t resist!). Small, strong and quick, this youngster has the build that modern defenders just hate to see on the opposite side. Capable of the sublime, as he showed against England recently, this lad has the potential to become one of the worlds best. More of a winger than attacking midfielder and some may feel not quite at the level that Arsenal need just yet, but if potential is what you are looking for then this is the man. Now a regular in the Swiss team, may be looking to move his career on to the next level. Should be available if the right money is offered.

Mario Goetze
Age 19
Borussia Dortmund
Games 22(4)
Goals 7(8)
Value £30m+

What can you say about this boy (still only 19!) that hasnt been said already? Have a Motm performance against us in the first CL game this year and is the closest thing you will find to Cesc in world football at the moment. An extremely talented individual who is as sharp as a button and has an eye for a pass. His stats also suggest his finishing ain’t bad either. What I really like about this kid, from what I’ve seen and heard, is his ability to perform in the big games.  Was magnificent against us and scored the winner against Munich in a recent crunch league game. Downside? At £30m+ and with the big boys circling, a bidding war is not what Arsenal want. If you believe everything you read in the papers then apparently we could have had him last season, but we don’t. If Wenger is serious about signing him then he needs to act fast and pull out the cheque book. Personally, I think this ship has sailed. I would give my right arm to be proved wrong though!

Eden Hazard
Age 21
Games 28(4)
Goals 8(8)
Value £15m-£25m

The young Belgian has had tongues wagging at Arsenal for a while now but no concrete bids seem to have been made as yet. Has been in good form again this season and a move to a bigger stage seems more and more likely as transfer stories seem to pop up every window. A wide player who can beat people, the lad has enormous talent and potential. Interesting then than Wenger opted to sign his teammate Gervinho rather than the lad himself last season. Some say that he’s overrated, and at £20m Wenger may have done the right thing in avoiding him, but at 21, the kid seems to have the world at his feet, and who better to take him to the next level than Arsene Wenger.

Thinking outside the box!

Shinji Kagawa
Age 22
Borussia Dortmund
Games 27(3)
Goals 10(5)
Value £15m-£25m

With so much talk about his teammate Goetze, this young Japanese star seems to have flown under the radar a little. With 17 goals to his name last term and with 10 already this year, the lightweight winger has shown he has an eye for goal. He may not be as supremely talented as his German teammate, but he is still one of Europes top prospects, and whilst the like of Barca, Real and Man City battle it out for Goetze, Arsene may be able to pull off a master strike and sneak this kid out of the back door of the
Signal Iduna Park.

I’m sure you all have ideas of your own, and no doubt most of you will be praying we see Goetze in an Arsenal shirt next year ( I know I will!). But if it does become a bidding war, then I think Kagawa could be just what we are looking for.

  1. Aaron says:

Bidding wars shouldn’t be an issue but for some reason they are for Wenger. We have the cash. Personally think we should have real go at signing pato and hazard. Your not wrong about gotze and the sailing shipbut the interesting thing is Dortmund look to be building up the clubs stature (signing reus away from bayern) I have a feeling he will stay at dortmund for some time yet. Arsene should offer 30m for hazard and the same for pato on 4 – 5 year deals and ensure our attacking options for the future.

  2. Big Raddy says:

FGG Interesting. Hazard would be good but a pipe dream.

It should be recalled that we already have a player who is as good as any of the above MF’s – if not better. Last season pundits were saying that JW is the best English talent since Gascoigne. He is every bit as good as Goetze, so why pay €25+m for him?

As to the winger/MF. We have the best available in Oxlade Chamberlain. Space must be made for the Ox to develop and should we sign another similar young player how will that happen? ( (The AW argument 🙂 ).

Or do we drop Gervinho who IMO has indicated he has all he needs to succeed in the PL.

The goals will come from Gerv, Ramsey and Chamberlain. I guarantee!

No ….. we need loan cover for our injured FB’s. If there is a reason for our less than great past few weeks it is entirely due to playing CB’s as FB’s. We lost the attacking edge of Sagna and Santos and it is showing

  3. Rasp says:

Morning all, very interesting analysis FGG.

My heart agrees with Aaron but my head overrules and is firmly in the Raddy camp.

Incidentally, stupid question I know, but does anyone know when Diaby might return?

  4. Big Raddy says:

Aaron. Who gets dropped for Pato or Hazard? Don’t say AA because he isn’t first 11.

How do you know that either player will fit into the more aggressive nature of the PL?

Theo, Gervinho, Chamberlain, Ryo are all under 24 – we have attacking options for the future.

What is missing is the replacement for RvP (Chamakh and Park are not good enough) but which top striker will sit on the bench and accept he is just going to play when RvP is out? Would Pato?

GIE’s post of yesterday was a chilling reminder of the effect of Squad rules on AFC. In my opinion no-one will come before summer when we sell some players.

  5. Raspers – Who(is “Diaby”) ?

  6. Big Raddy says:

Rasp. About the same time as the Second Coming

  7. Murphy says:

Pls buy a good mildfilder to let van persea stay! UP GUNNERS

  8. ..and morning all, glad to hear your view point FGG but I’m in the doomer camp on this and think we’ve had pur transfers in for tihs transfer window.

If we’re lucky we may get a LB on loan but I’m expecting disappointment there too.

Crikey, what a miserable git I am today !

  9. Rasp says:

I’ve just had a look at the stats. Diaby has averaged less than 15 games out of 38 in the league a season in 7 years. That means in reality he is costing us more than double his wages in terms of time on the pitch.

I know he doesn’t mean to get injured and he is very talented, but surely the only option is to let his contract run out unless some other club is mad enough to offer us money for him – under no circumstances should he be offered a contract extension.

  10. wambam says:

if you also consider that Cesc didn’t find his scoring boots until 21, why not give Jack and Aaron a chance to find theirs before we ship in replacements. Although a 4-2-3-1 formation with 5 of Wilshere, Ramsey, Shaqiri, Song, Arteta, Ox, Theo, Gerv playing behind RVP could be awesome.

  11. Big Raddy says:

Morning Chary. I agree with you and I am not a miserable git

  12. Rasp says:

On a positive note, there is no doubt in my mind that with Sagna, Santos and Wilshere back and van Persie fit, we have the best 1st choice 11 in the Premiership.

  13. Rasp,

A sort of answer to your Diaby question “none of them are ready for the next few weeks at least” Wenger speaking on January 6th.

  14. Great players listed, any of these young guys could form a partnership with Wilshere, the ox and ramsay for the next 10 years.

  15. Rasp says:

    Thanks LG,

It looks like Sagna may be the first to return with Santos some time in March. I understand that Jenkinson, Gibbs and Diaby have all had ‘setbacks’ and no return date can be predicted 😦

  16. Big Raddy says:

I wonder if any other team has ever had 4 FB’s out for most of the season?

  17. I think I read that Vermaelen could be back in time for the M.U. game.

  18. Radders, I think hacks don’t even bother asking about Diaby’s return date as they know he’ll hardly ever play anyway and they are bored of asking.

How can paying a player to only feature in 15 games a season fit into a sustainable business model ??

  19. Cafu says:

I think arsenal can sign one of all these stars if arsene wenger does and the main problem of arsene is lack of money wenger brings da players and he shows every cracters and selling big money amount so wenger keep ur players and bring among of these stars at list two of them

  20. LB says:

    BR’s 10.09 am

A very intelligent comment, I couldn’t agree more.

  21. chas says:

    Nice post.
Some fine selections from the sweet shop.
I think you’re right that Goetze is the closest to Cesc in style.
Unfortunately I think they’re all pipe dreams.

The same could have been said of Robin before 2011, but I know what you’re saying.

  22. Rasp says:

Hi LB, agreed about Raddy’s analysis. As he (and you) say, no top striker is going to accept sitting on the bench as 2nd to RvP, but there is a level of performance/ability that should be expected of a 2nd choice striker and at the moment, none of our options are at that level.

Hopefully to our mutual benefit, Chamkh and Arsh will move on in the summer and leave a vacancy for that kind of striker.

  23. Chas, the trouble with Abou is that even when he does actually play he has a run of one good game, followed by an indifferent game and then a couple of bad games.
With Robin he’s always been quality whenever he gets onto the pitch, whereas Diaby has too many brain freezes on the pitch to be considered worth the wait.

I agree with Rapsers, get rid of him quicker than a urinary tract infection, i.e. PDQ !

Thanks for the post FGG, the players you listed are all excellent young talents, and i am sure if it was straighforward Arsene would not say no to any of them.

The question many fans ask of course is why dont we spend some hefty money and sign some of this “super quality”? The reasons are many and have been discussed many times but the overiding factor is that arsenal are a “Breakeven Club” i.e. from normal operations, and by that i mean football, Arsenal tend to break even.

Now, as some people wil know from my posts i never criticise the club or individual players and am a strong adherent of our football and bussines model, but over the last few years there is something that is troubling me and perhaps some one could shed some some light on it for me. In the last decade we have seen shares in the club exchanged at numerous times, with the sellers of these shares making a lot of money i.e. Dein, Bracewall Smith, Fizman etc. we also know that in recent times the Club has accumalated surplus cash from 2 factors. transfer surpluses and property. some people with more knowledge of the figures say that the club has anything from 40 to 100 million available for splurging on the transfer market.
My point is this. Whenever anybody sales shares in a company the one thing that will add vaule to his shares is cash. In essence this is what Fizman and Smith done when they sold to Kronke. Now the buyer Kronke, has paid a premium for his shares because he has purchased cash. Now if you were Kronke, would you regard that cash as the clubs, and with it they could buy new players, or would you regard it, as i suspect he does, as an asset that is his and belongs to him?

  25. goonermichael says:

I think you are being hard on Park Raddy. He hasn’t had a chance yet.

  26. chas says:

Surely these are bad enough to lure RA from his hiatus…..

Antony Worrall Thompson stole some cheddar? How dairy!

I went to see Ready, Steady, Cook the other day. It was fantastic. Antony Worrall Thompson absolutely stole the show.

The Anthony Worrall Thompson diet, cheese and wine …..followed by porridge.

“Morning Sergeant”. ”Morning Constable”. ”What have you got for me today”. ” We have Anthony Worrell Thompson in possession of stolen cheese”. ”Right then lets grill him”

Antony Worrall Thompson stole some cheese and wine. And that was only for starters.

Wozza was caught stealing cheese from Tesco. He should have done it more Caerphilly.

Antony Worrall Thompson has been caught shoplifting milk, yeast and flour from his local Tesco. He’s run out of dough.

There’s no such thing as a free lunch. Unless you’re using the Worrall Thompson recipe book.

  27. Ephraim Mwaipopo says:

The list is all about excellent but expensive players and we all arsenal fc haven’t yet learnt how to cut the cloth accordingly. Another list of average players i.e. Park, Chamak etc then we are in business. Wat a shame it is always playing for fourth spot.

Lille & Chelsea are in talks over Eden Hazard. Chelsea set to make an offer 30m euro, whilst Lille are holding out for 40 – (L’Equipe)

I can’t see us (in the near future) Buying any top, top players if any of barca, chavs, mancs (both), RM, Inter, Munich or AC milan are interested.

  29. Gooner In Exile says:

Morning all nice shopping list FGG. For me Kagawa is probably most likely and a typical Wenger signing. I was impressed with him in the game against us in Dortmund.

As others have said we have a bulging squad and youngsters struggling to get through so unless Wenger thinks Afobe isn’t ready for replacement striker duties i will predict no more arrivals.

  30. Wonderman says:

Morning Terry Mancini….in laymans terms and I’ll try to be brief when you purchase a business you hope for two basic things, growth and income. Growth comes from increase in Market share, therefore turnover. This can be done organically or by acquisition . Income can be attained even though a business may not be growing, however it is generally accepted that this situation will not be sustainable . In Kronke’s case I believe there are intangibles, namely the diversity of his ownership, which could lead to cross selling, the kudos of owning A blue chip club such as Arsenal and access to the European Market .

One of the items we are never privy to in the accounts is management fees as this would give us an idea of how much cash is going to the USA . Certainly Dein & co enjoyed exponential growth in their initial investments, but then they contributed to that growth

  31. J@J.com says:

Thanks for showing us a list of players we won’t sign.

  32. Big Raddy says:

J@J. Thanks for your interesting comment.

  33. goonermichael says:

    Big Raddy
    Thanks for telling him 🙂

Thanks for that Wonderman. I do believe that this goes to the crux of why many supporters have a gripe with the club. Every one is aware that in the last 3 years the club has made surplus income from transfers and property and that further property windfalls are in the pipeline yet these cashflows are not reinvested back in to the team in the form of outlay on players. It is dissapointing to consider that the windfalls made by the club will end up in the pockets of former shareholders and current ones in the form of cash retention and subsequent sale of shares, but the evidence points in this direction. I hope i am proved wrong.

  35. hey peoples, how are we?
@ Chas, thank you my dear…for yesterday!!

Robbin, are you still awake? i am monitoring your posting times so i can calculate your sleep patterns for a paper i intend to write on how REM sleep is affected by Arsenal addiction. hahaha.

  37. terry, i work very demanding hours.. but just for you.. I SHALL LEAVE THE (red) LIGHT ON!! lol.

  38. its not easy living in a rugby country, and a househol who support manURE and as chas likes to call ‘pool-DIPPERS…wot can i say, i miss you guys…awwwwwww

  39. Wonderman says:

You are welcome TMHT…. I am envolved with amateur football and come into contact with several London academies on a regular basis. There certainly seems to be feverish activity by the clubs in getting the ‘ best’ youngsters in as early as possible ( and I mean 7 and 8 even though they can’t sign them until they are 9). What I will say is that the landscape is changing rapidly. I believe that we will see less ‘big money transfers’ in the future and an increase in players running down their contracts as they attempt to maximise their income via signing on fees. IMO Arsenal are perfectly placed with the quality of young players we possess to exploit this trend

  40. terry, wot does kip mean? aussie dictionaries suck for british slang!

  41. Frankly speaking talk of signing mid-fielders, wingers and strikers is pointless at the moment.

The over-riding priority is to sign an experienced left-back, I would be surprised if Santos, when he returns, will play the remainder of the season, we know that Gibbs will suffer more injuries so perhaps Eric Abidal would be the best option. The thirty-two year old Barcelona star is in contract deadlock and could be available for a reasonable fee. Job sharing with Santos and covering for centre backs would make sense and allow both the sale of Squillaci and the rehabilitation of Gibbs.

It means sleep Robbin, so turn that red light off. hahaha.

  43. FGG,
    nice post..
i doubt that wenger will spend any more than 20mil on any one player…therefore i think the ship has sailed on goetze n hazard..i believe that hazard was the jewel of wengers eye a few yrs back wen typically people were saying ‘EDEN WHO’?
Theoretically speaking though, the one player on that list to fill a creative void in the hole would definately be Goetze, but im suprised wen compairing players to the cesc role, no-body has yet mentioned ‘Tiago Alcantara’.. would also be the opposite of cheap but at 20mil i believe would fit the bill perfectly..he would definately fit into THE ROYAL ARSENALS’ style of play and definately come with his share of goals..
I take it though that we dont want to get involved in another barcelona love-hate relationship.. would have been nice in a cesc sweetener!!

  44. kip=sleep=rob=me no understand=must breath arsenal

Wonderman, thanks again, that is very interesting and i agree with you 100% about the way the game is going and that we are very well placed to adapt to this emerging envoirement. Do you forsee a time in the near future were the transfer market will be almost non exsistent and that players contracts will be on a 1 or 2 years basis with players salaries reflecting these changes, i.e. the players will aquire even more power and financial rewards?

  46. TotalArsenal says:

FGG, interesting post again, and all players mentioned would, in theory, be interesting additions.

I believe the new philosophy of the BoD is to combine youth development, with buying typical Arsene discovery gems (if and when he can find/get them), AND experienced players – ideally from the PL. He has brought experience into the backline and midfield, but with Chamakh and Arshavin badly misfiring and likely to be sold soon, I expect Arsene to get an experienced winger/striker, with a decent to good goalscoring record – before the end of the TW. Your previous recommendation of Kalou joining us, is far more realistic imo. I also would not be surprised if Malouda joined us this month. But, obviously, not both of them in one go.

  47. fatgingergooner says:

Again, this was a list aimed at the summer rather than right now as like most have said, these players cost big bucks!

If AA leaves, and we all think he will, does everyone believe that we have enough for the wide positions/attacking midfielders in Ox, Gerv and Theo?

I left Ryo out of the list because he is yet to start an important game for this club and therefore cannot be seen as back up. Many have slated Wenger for not having the foresight to buy a striker in the summer to cover RvP. Surely if we head into next season with 3 wingers for 2 positions then the same will be said again?

  48. BigRaddy 10.01am,
agree with you completely..and everything that you argue makes complete sense.. i do however tend to get impatient at times, i have faith in Ramsey, great box to box MF, he has lungs made for a whale, such is his stamina..but he surely has to be putting more balls into the net.. we know he gets into dangerous positions, and gets a few good chances during his shift, but if we dont intend on signing a proven goalscorer to play with RVP in a tinkered formation than we must be expecting more from midfield!! unfortunately, i dont think that time is on our side and its getting to ‘make or break time’ at arsenal..(4th place should be very very important to us, and a real shot at the FA cup wouldnt be too much to ask!). im worried that if the young guns feel the pressure it could have an adverse effect to their game, and i believe that letting them develop at their own pace would be a wiser option..i know ramsey is a leader (international captain), but IMO the pressure of leading an Arsenal midfield successfully and achieving consistent results would be greater than the expectations of Wales?? (not everybody can be a little Jack)

Your right there FGG, the clubs policy has always been to have at least 2 players for every position and as TA said, dont be surprised to see us go for those Chelsea boys. The list you gave FFG is of young players with tremondous talent which is known by all the big clubs in Europe, putting you on the spot, if i may, do tou think we will purchase a player of that stature this summer?

  50. Rasp says:

rURp, we keep talking about the need for a striker, but what we really need is more ‘finishers’ – or the players we have to become better finishers.

  51. Ozil says:

Hazard overrated? you kidding me? If Hazard is valued at 20m then I’d buy him in a minute. How come Gotze is valued higher than Hazard is beyond me. Hazard is a great talent and he elevated Lille to great heights all on his own. I think Goetze is way overrated; he definetly has talent, but his market value is way over the top.

  52. hey Total,
do you really see us going for malouda? Really?

  53. TotalArsenal says:

FGG, from what I have heard from my friends in Holland, Ryo is a very promising player. I guess we have not seen much of him because a) he is third in the picking order, behind Gerv and Arsh and b) he has been injured for the last few months (if I am correct). This could all change in the next few months. We just could do with a winger/striker who combines PL experience with the same hunger/desire of Arteta/BFG etc, to have a bit more balance upfront. TH12 is the perfect short-term answer, now let’s see what will happen in the next three weeks 🙂

  54. TotalArsenal says:

RurP, ‘Really’ as in: ‘is this really going to happen, please tell me yes’, or ‘are you out of your mind’: which one is it?

  55. fatgingergooner says:

I would love us to, and personally, I think Wenger would love to be able to. But in answer to your question, no.

The only way I could see it happening is if he managed to get £10m for AA and £10m for Bendy and Chamakh. If he managed that, very unlikely, then he may just decide that a world class talent could be purchased for that position. But then again, we need a decent striker!

I think youth development is great, and I love the way Wenger works, but to me, youth only works if you have a constant stream ie a player in that position coming through every few years. At the moment I fear we may have a gap between Gervinho and waiting for Ryo to come good. He is not even an understudy yet, nevermind a first team option.

  56. TotalArsenal says:

Ozil, I am with you re Goetze. Everything I have seen of him, which is not much I admit, tells me he is of the category/type of Nasri as per last year. A good player, but I am not sure whether he will be a great player. I have seen very little of Hazard, so cannot commend. My experience is that Belgian players seldom or never make it to the absolute top, so again, I would not expect Hazard to live up to his impressive reputation.

Ahhhhg, sod this, i cant keep this serious demeanour up any longer. Lets face it, whoever Arsene buys will probably become a star. We have Wilshere, Ramsey and Ox, and as Raddy said earlier, with that sort of talent coming to fruition other teams will find it nigh on impossible to cope withthe future Arsenal. We are destined for great things on the pitch, we just have to have a little more paitence.

  58. goonermichael says:

    TV being the exception 🙂

  59. Wonderman says:

TMHT it is very difficult to predict, as we have not seen how the homegrown rule will affect squads yet, but it is clearly going to a) force clubs to ramp up their academies b) inflate the prices of good homegrown players ( as if they’re not inflated already ).

On our current predicament, as has already been stated the only signing I can see is a loan left back and even then it will at the 11th hour, but I can really see Thierry ramping up the mental side to our squad

  60. hey Rasp,
i agree with you..i too tend to get excited by some of the names hovering around our club but at the end of the day im an avid wenger supporter and trust in his judgement and love for Arsenal.. but we Do LAck in finishing skills, and at many times decision making..
Anxiety tends to grab me by the throat, and although i know i can be as patient as Wenger asks me too i cant speak on behalf of many others who spend money (or raise money =) ) on our club..the longer this issue isnt adressed the louder we will hear the anti-wenger jibes.. and believe me, no one team can be successfull without cohesion and unity.. i feel that time is not on the side of our youngsters this time! shooting practise= YES PLEASE!!

  61. goonermichael says:

The Arse website now has the Villa game as 28/29. If it moves to the Sunday I’ll get a ticket and meet up with everyone.

I know what your saying FGG, there does seem to be cracks in the squad, most notably wide and up front and this could harm us short term, but when i look at the young talent we have coming through and with what wonderman said about the changing nature of football, we could be on the cusp of a fantastic team in the making.

  63. Ozil says:

TotalArsenal, true hazard may not live up to his impressive reputation, but he’s shown in the last 3 years [that’s the period I watched him performed for Lille] that he’s a true footballer who not only makes the difference but also shown consistency at such a young age. So based on that I think with the right management he could go to higher level. People talk about Goetze performance against Arsenal, I really didn’t see anything that impressed about those performances; he was easily marked out of the game by Song. on the other hand, I saw hazard’s performance against Liverpool a year ago and he was full of skills and got rid of his markers, they were too many, easily but his close control of the ball, tricks and quick passes. They just couldn’t take the ball away from him.

  64. TotalArsenal says:

GM, yep TV is going to be the exception and Belgium might be experiencing a golden generation of footballers in the next decade, and I will take it all back happily 🙂

  65. Total,
‘is this really going to happen, please tell me we are looking elsewhere and every othert option first’. ha ( i feel with him, just like kalou, he performs only wen chelsea collectively perform. he had a dream run 2 seasons ago but thats GONE plus i know he has experience, but wenger sorted that issue out, the balance is good) this would never be forseen-wenger signing many players on the wrong side of 30?

  66. GM 1.09pm,
lets not forget Kompany..hes a top belgian player for man.C, as long as he keeps seeing red…I’ll still rate him..hahah

  67. goonermichael says:

Don’t forget Jean Claude van Damme 🙂

    That’s 3 famous belgians

  68. i thought 3 was a crowd (“,)

  69. TotalArsenal says:

RurP, if Malouda or Kalou would really love to join Arsenal and will give it their all, I would welcome their arrival. I would rather see Arshavin finding his form again and shaking off his crippling melancholy, but I have given up on that now. Ryo, the Gerv and Malouda would be a fine mixture of talent and experience. Have you got better options that fit within the Arsenal purchasing philosophy?

  70. TotalArsenal says:

( carlo sure knows how to make money for that berlusconi…hahahh)

  77. goonermichael says:

    YouAreMyArsenal You Are My Arsenal
La Nazione is reporting that Fiorentina & #Arsenal are discussing fee for Chamakh. No deal will be completed until end of window.

We won’t get Hazard. I’m not even being negative.

  78. these prices going around are INSANE..if pato is 35, than hazard is at least 10 on top of that..is it any wonder bacon face signed scholes?

  79. evonne says:

Raddy – Mancini – good hair, nice scarf, average manager. Comment of the day 🙂

  80. Gooner In Exile says:

Just a quick point on youngsters…..everything is set to change of new rules are enforced.

The FA have in their wisdom given Youth Development Funds to the Premier League to control and allocate to clubs (those in lower leagues).

As I understand it new rules drawn up by the Premier League will state that to get Youth Development funding the recipient club must allow PL scouts into their academies when players reach 16-18 and if the PL club wants to sign them they will only pay a flat fee of around £200k.

If this is true the scenario described by WM above will become more likely.

  81. Story on arse.com: “Gibbs – Henry has lifted the dressing room” – how does he know, he’s always in the medical building ?

  82. MickyDidIt89 says:

    FGG and GiE,
Two really top posts. Sorry not around to join the debate, but both great informative reads. Thanks.
    Note to all,
Some of you may remember that I have two bets on here. One with BR and one with Rasp about the signing of a striker during the window.
Well, unless you are one of the aforementioned duo (I shall call them Looooserrs) I have good news.
There is not a cat in hell’s chance that I am going to lose. There is not even the teeniest weeniest of chances that Arsene will go into the rest of the season without another goalscorer. No chance whatsoever. 🙂

  83. goonermichael says:

Does anyone think we’ll buy anyone this TW?

  84. HOW can some so called Arsenal fans still be in support of nasri, both as a person of morals and the 3 months he showed us as a player? nasri is a joke!

  85. goonermichael says:

I’ve just been on there and seen your comments robbin. Hilarious how he gets “AKB” in.

  86. GM, maybe a no-nonsense no frills teenager from south america..

  87. my mum said we should never laugh at special peoples….LMFAO.. banned i am!

  88. goonermichael says:

That was such a shit article. Toatally stupid.

  89. Rasp says:

Haha Micky, I see you have defected to GliC’s newly formed splinter group – The Cuckoo Club 🙄

  90. hey i was jus watching a replay of the leeds game on tv and by fluke i saw a “mazy” run by arshavin through the centre.. i was jus thinkin in terms of his best positon and what he could do for our cause.. keep him as a super sub, (if worthy of the super brand) and seeing as weve been struggling with goaless hlf time draws and shots with no real conviction it leaves us in some nervy states..
bring arshavin on for either ramsey or arteta with at most 20m min to go..but he deserves a chance through the middle, and has more options of a pass then on the wing wher he either cuts in with no options or goes the line, relying on pace that he just hasnt got any more..at least we know he can shoot and finish (well some gems anyway!)

  91. Gooner In Exile says:

I was giving thought to that very same thing today RurP, AA23 actually ran with pace and with the ball at defenders. When was the last time we saw that happen from an Arsenal player full stop.

Maybe Thierry is teaching the dressing room something after all.

I have now got a theory about why teams can sit so deep and why we can’t encourage them to defend higher. It is now afflicting City too but not Spuds and not ManUre. It didn’t affect us in the glory days.

So the theory is simple City and us prefer ball movement by passing, Spuds and ManUre whilst doing this also have players who run at pace with the ball towards defenders. It’s what Thierry used to do and Pires to a maybe lesser extent. Nowadays our attackers receive the ball much higher up the pitch surrounded by defenders which then requires a neat skill to get space. One of the hardest things to defend is a player running at pace with ball at feet straight for your goal. If you defend on your 18 yd you are likely to concede a lot of free kicks at the edge of the area and more unfortunately penalties. Does this then force the defenders to push up higher to try and stop the problem higher up the pitch?

I’m hoping AA23s efforts on Monday are realisation of this.

  92. kelsey says:

    goonermichael sent me this 😉

  93. Gooner In Exile says:

Late to the party Kelsey, have a look back at yesterday mornings 😀

Glad you’ve added it to todays post as everyone needs to see it

  94. Big Raddy says:

Nearly Friday and I am still high from TH on Monday !

Ramsey: Needs to learn that it still a goal if he passes it into the net and stop trying to smash it in. Perhaps TH can teach him.

  95. Gooner In Exile says:

“Arsenal have created the most goal attempts from counter attacks (21) & also scored the joint-most goals on the break (5).”

    Courtesy of MicktheGooner on twitter.

  96. Irishgunner says:

A friend of mine tells me Zakaria Labyad is a kid worth watching. Apparently he is as good a player as Christian Eriksen at Ajax.

  97. kelsey says:

It proved my own point GIE that so many of us don’t read all the comments.

More seriously I put a comment up about Spurs early this morning and since then through my connection at fulham I undrstand jenkinson won’t play again this season and that Santos will not be match fit until the end of march at the earliest. We just have to get a loan full back in now as the top 4 maybe really hard to achieve this year.Ideally a striker aw well or at least walcott, gervinho,Chamakh and gerviho 9when they return) need to up their goal tally.

These home games against 5 of the top 6 will need more than one goal to secure a win.Our goals for, seem to be deserting us these last 5 home games .i never second guess AW but I hope he doesn’t think things will sort themselves out by themselves.

  98. evonne says:

Hiya Ginga, just read the post. Very good, thorough research. I must admit I have only seen Hazard and Goetze, don’t know a thing about others. I don’t think AW will sign another midfielder and certainly not in the £25-£30mil bracket, no chance.

Mind you, he signed a certain winger from Juve 12 years ago and turned him into the most deadly striker in the world, so who knows?

  99. GiE,
of coursev titi has alot to do with it..my concern however is that arshavin no longer has the pace or stamina to do what his mind would like him to do..when he is on the wing he seems to hav no options, no players running into space for him and its been seen that he cant carry up the line alone, hence he doesnt even try anymore for this lack of pace has ended up in a lack of confidence..
i say if we dont get decent money for him in this window, give him a few runs through the middle wen ramsey or arteta need or deserve a rest..who knows, it might do wonders..i do feel he still has the intelligence needed for our cause ii the centre, hes proven that for both his country and previous club..(hell, we were prepared to up nasris’ wage and give him cescs’ role on a plate, and nasri isnt worthy of tying up AA23’s laces)..
Another thing i have noticed with this particular team is that our passing isnt as fluent as people would assume with arsenal in general..very few players have been able to pin point a pass toa player in front of him wen we’re bursting forward, and this in turn has slowed us down and given the opposition time to re-group and flood their half..
IT all used to be about counter attacking football with flair and precision, not just from a cesc but a whole team..and now our style is called direct in some quarters, yet we have trouble breaking alot of teams down..is it just me, i mean, i wouldnt mind seeing a change in formation wen its not working for us???

  100. evonne says:

Hi Micky – would you like to join the Cuckoo Cuckoo Club? Rasp is far too sensible to be allowed in, but you could become an honourary guest when they kick you out from the whiff whaff thingy

Just checked out that Le Grove site for the first time and had to calm myself with a mild sedative to maintain my remaining hair folicules. When our great club emulates the 30’s teams these idiots will bath in the glory like parasitical leeches and claim that it was there direct advice that made the difference. They are deserving of nothing.

Just a quick one about Totnumb, away games coming up in the next few weeks include City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal. By the time they come to the Grove we will be right on there heels and overtake them after giving them a right good beating….and Harry will be lisitining to the game on his transistor radio in the scrubs….if hes 6 feet 4, 20 stone (likes the look of Harrys Arse) cell mate allows him that is.

  102. Big Raddy says:

    TMHT. 😀

Is there really a chance Harry could go down? The tabloids will do anything to keep their lovechild away from the cells.

Micky hasn’t got time for the Cuckoo Club , he is heavily ensconced in the run up to the Wiff Waff Club Presidentail Elections. At this very moment he is displaying his oratory genius at one of the Primaries.

  103. Jamie says:

    Decent scouting Ginger gooner.

We might get Goetze. Wenger doesn’t often admit an interest unless someone is a real target. He has done that we Goetze.

Kagawa is very good but not sure he plays between the lines. We hav

  104. MickyDidIt89 says:

I’m the Chairman, President and all round Grand Fromage of the Wiff Waff Club, which is the only reason I’m still in. Cuckoo Club? No chance. As one of the Marx fella’s said: “I wouldn’t want to be a member of any club that would have someone like me”.

  105. MickyDidIt89 says:

Agree about AA through the middle thinking. Have to say that I’ve never seen him looking leaner and meaner than he was against Leeds.

  106. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Get packing fish 🙂

  107. evonne says:

Micky and Robbin** – this probably means that AA23 knows he is going and he will try to impress other clubs that might be interested in buying him, old trick. If I am right he will try his best for the next few months.

  108. MickyDidIt89 says:

    I need you.
Can’t make that bloody software work, mind you, picking up a new laptop tomorrow so probably has different operating system, so can we try again then then then then?

  109. MickyDidIt89 says:

Good, just noticed Rocky and LB back in town.

  110. MickyDidIt89 says:

Also just read back over the old chestnut comments of we can’t get a decent striker as no-one will want to play second fiddle to RvP. What a load of old tosh.
Oz and I worked tirelessly for at least ten minutes last week searching youtube and unearthed Loic Remy who plays, and scores, from anywhere across the front. That’ll keep Gerv, Theo and AA on their toes and of course he can play central when/if Robin is tired/injured.

  111. Gooner In Exile says:

Raddy I doubt ‘Arry will go down, Piggot did but for much larger sums, what has been disclosed so far is quite small in comparison. Guilty verdict should end any chance of England job so could be playing on his mind and I doubt the Spuds will get his full concentration for a while.

Altho he could go down for contempt when he replies to the prosecutions opening question:

“Mr Redknapp it is said you are somewhat of a wheeler dealer, is this correct?”

  112. evonne, it might be just the tonic we need if he could get back to the form we bought him for (i do doubt it though).. get us back into the groove, maybe n FA Cup, i shot at CL again ( no complaints) and also set himself up for a decent transfer (will be his last, and i for one will be happy to get alot of that money back)..we all win dont we..someone should’v told that nasri-nobody how its done-with a bit of class

  113. MickyDidIt89 says:

Never get bored of that one 🙂

  114. MickyDidIt89 says:

What the hell was that ponce doing back at The Ems? Everyone’s worked out he was the problem in the dressing room, and Frimpong hardly hid the fact did he?

  116. Craigie says:

    Would love Kagawa.

Something people don’t get about “bidding wars” and massive transfers is it directly translates into wages.

Gotze is young but if he commands a fee of £35million, he also commands wages of £110-£150k a week, no question.

Someone like Kagawa at £15-18million could be justified to ask for £75k-£90k ish.

That means Gotze is going to cost a big spender up to 75million for 5 years, whereas someone like Kagawa would cost 35-40million over 5 years. Also there’s more chance of Kagawa being a bigger star and being sold for profit, whereas I doubt there’s much chance of another club offering us much more than £35million again to buy Gotze in the future unless he becomes like Ronaldo.

We would get more impact from two players as good as Kagawa rather than one as good as Gotze.

  117. Mickey.
id like to know wot TH12 has to say bout Nasris’ character as he clearly pissed off gallas n toure, and half the dressing room in the french squad..surely he saw something in the corner of his eye, only a gentleman would never tell..

  118. MickyDidIt89 says:

Here’s a plan. Grab Gotze for £30m. Flog him in 18 months for £50m when The Ox moves central to form the World’s best midfield with AR and JW. All true.
    Bye all.

  119. MickyDidIt89 says:

I can understand upsetting a french dressing room alright, but the rest, too true.
    Rally off now. Nite.

  120. Gooner In Exile says:

That’s top reasoning from Craigie. Will be too much for some “spend what we got” fans to cope with. He would just be another “sell shirts in the far east” player in their eyes.

  121. Gooner In Exile says:

Btw not seen you post before so a warm welcome extended Craigie.

  122. evonne says:

Micky – let me know if you REALLY need help, you have my email address

  123. kelsey says:

I am aware of the theme of the post but being Arsenal look at this list of players. Will they still be with us after the summer

Almunia, manone, fabianski, vela, bendtner, squilacci, rosicky, arshavin, diaby, chamakh benyahoun, Frimpong (out on loan for a further period).

You might agree that many if not all will be gone.

  124. gooner lost in cornwall says:

    Hello all,
fgg, nice post, have we bought Hazard and goetze yet ? .
More chance of us getting a few of them young Croatian (rURp, you might have inside info on them. whilst I`m here, you should change your name to InsomniaGooner, how do you do it ?) players, Fucovubic, Sucitbic and Citonvisubic, too many to list.
What a great name your GranMa has, All that silly stuff I come out with and It`s close to some of the Myth`s ! 😆
I reckon that 6`4″ ,20 stone con waiting for Harry is Redders !, he said he`s having a sabbatical, he`s in there, inventing new words for the Oxford dictionary, ” right Harry, lets try this new word, Penetrarse “!

  125. gooner lost in cornwall says:

I asked a question @6:38 yesterday, perhaps you could have a peek and answer it !

  126. RockyLives says:

Nice one FGG, but I’m not sure we’ll be splashing any big cash this window.

The Abidal thing looks interesting, but now Gibbs reckons he’ll be back for the ManUre game later this month, so if anything we could do with a RB on loan, not a LB. (Although if Gibbs lasts more than three games it will be a miracle).

  127. evonne says:

    cuckoo cuckoo cuckoo time

    A worrying thought for 2012 !

10 years ago Bob Hope died

5 years ago Johnny Cash died

A couple of months ago Steve Jobs died

A few weeks ago Jimmy Saville died

Now we have no Hope, no Cash, no Jobs and nobody left to Fix It

Let’s hope nothing happens to Ed Balls

  128. Big Raddy says:

kelsey. We have to find someone to buy them!

Micky. I am sure the Wiff Waff Club has witnessed an explosion of growth under your Premiership. Perhaps it is time to let go and allow a younger man to take the club forward,

Fish on ice. Looking forward to a scone with raspberry jam and real Devon cream

  129. MickyDidIt89 says:

Back from filleting some fish, so starnge to read your comment. Its on ice already?!?! In other words, I’ll be getting some weird shit Scandianavian rotten fish delicacy then?

  130. goonermichael says:

I’ve just decided that tevez looks like a very ugly Adam Sandler

  131. gooner lost in cornwall says:

    e va va vonne, 🙂
What a great name for a CF , ed balls, all he needs is two decent wingers, Left or right whats his politics ?

  132. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Ahoy Rocky,
Good time on the boat I hope.

  133. Big Raddy says:

RL.Corporal Jenkinson is not enough to cover Sagna IMO. A 19 y-o from Charlton reserves is always going to struggle and I was concerned from the start of the season as to what could happen if Sagna got hurt. It cam to apss and CJ did a decent job but really it is asking a boy to do man’s job.

I think we need to sign an RB and loan a LB because as you say Gibbs has always had injury problems

  134. goonermichael says:

That reminds of the Benny Hill sketch about opportunity knocks that featured John Thomas and his swinging duo

  135. Big Raddy says:

Micky. I hate filleting fish and am crap at it – leave most on the bone.

I would love to be sending you some rotten smoked herring but I fear you will be the one queuing at the Post Office

  136. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Come on lads,
Sod the defence. Where’s your spirit of adventure? Attack attack attack.
On a less serious note, how long is Coquelin out for?

  137. evonne says:

    GLiC 🙂
    GM – NO.
Micky – weird shit delicacy is an oxymoron.

    No football, boring.

  138. MickyDidIt89 says:

You leave The Ox out of it.
    Right, back to the fish.
    Really off this time.

  139. Big Raddy says:

  142. Big Raddy says:

Me too. Some creamed rice pudding to make (I know, I know….)

  143. Gooner In Exile says:

Almunia and Squids contracts up at end of season (maybe TR7 too) they won’t be renewed so we will part company. Think I looked through a list recently, Diaby and Arsh are contracted until end of 2013 season (I believe). Doubt Benayoun will stay on past this season.

Vela, Bendtner should be sold as clearly they won’t make it, Vela should be knocking on the first team door and is undoubtedly a good finisher.

  144. evonne says:

Raddy – yes! A long, long, sleepless night. And I, unlike Peaches, don’t like watching replays 😦
    When is Saturday?

  145. gooner lost in cornwall says:

    Villa, FA Cup, Sun`29th, 4pm.

  146. Gooner In Exile says:

GliC in answer to yesterday’s question the simple answer is yes we can have as many under 21’s as we like.

The problem is they don’t stay under 21 for ever and as soon as soon as they are over 21 they have to be named as part of the 25 man PL squad. (if we get them at 18 or younger or they have been at an English or Welsh club for three years before 21 they are homegrown).

I would guess we will see the departure of Cham, Almunia, Squid for definite, which means of the current squad we will have 19 players (5 homegrown if Mannone stays) and need to add Szczesny and Rambo bringing us to 21. We will have 4 squad spots left to be filled by max 2 non homegrown. We need to shift out more to eventually accommodate Ox, Frimpong, Coquelin, Jenkinson and Wilshere into the squad in forthcoming seasons.

A future midfield variation of Ox, Wilshere, Rambo, Coquelin, Frimpong, Ryo, Lansbury? Is for me very exciting.and as TMHT constantly says a very positive future.

  147. RockyLives says:

    Ahoy Micky

Deep Purple are playing in Toronto in a couple of months. Have you seen them recently? Are they worth seeing d’you think? (No Ritchie Blackmore, but they do have Gillan, Paice, Morse).

  148. evonne says:

    sunday, at 4, away, important

  149. gooner lost in cornwall says:

Thanks for answering. So in theory, there`s nothing stopping us buying, Goetze, Eriksen, etc, if they were available in this TW.

Sorted . Get the cobwebs off your chequebook Arsene ! 🙂

  150. gooner lost in cornwall says:

Bolton is on the Tuesday though.

  154. Gooner In Exile says:

Surely free to any Gooner 🙂

  155. Gooner In Exile says:

Guess Bolton game will be moved? Altho playing Sunday – Tuesday is not unheard of, just a bugger trying to travel the day players should be having their rub downs and hydro baths 😀

  156. California Gooner says:

Keisuke Honda, anyone? He looks like the Japenese Bobby Pires.

  157. SharkeySure says:

    Cracking write up FGG

I’m in the ‘who do we really need’ camp. A back up to Robin who can also play on the wings to get game time…ie not just signed as cover for the Boy Wonder. Perhaps thats Joel Campbell, I seriously doubts its Vela.

As others have said..we’ve already got two of Europes finest in JW and AR…where woud we fit in a third..although it could be a nice problem to have.

Of the names above…Goetze is obviously the pick of the bunch.

Mention of Diaby.?? He needs to show us something this season or go. There’s a player in there..I know that for sure…but he has to start actually playing or go.

Gibbs on the other hand can just go. When fully fit he plays as though he is winding down his career not starting it. He always seems to play within himself, as if he is playing for his Sat side, but his Sunday side has a couple final the following day

Just for Wonderman (if he’s reading) I’ll repeat what I said about Gibbs almost ayear ago…’if he were a flower he would never get pollinated, because he just doesn’t open up enough’

    Oh…evening all !

  158. SharkeySure says:

Oh and to GIE…absolutely sterling work yesterday. You put many a print journo (wanker) to shame.

You also make a mockery of blogs who attempt to write ‘news’ every day when there is clearly so little about.

Likewise with FGG’s thoughtful piece today. Yeah technically its transfer speculation…but its like TS for grown ups. ie limited to four sensible options, with some good (and up to date) info on each.

AA – top of the pile !!

  159. fatgingergooner says:

Thanks for the nice comments guys and gals!

Just a bit of transfer fun before a massive away game.

I’ve noticed Vela has the same birthday as myself and therefore declare him the new Henry! Joking aside though, he has 2 goals and 3 assists in 16 games this year. Not great, and not the answer.

  160. Aaron says:

Pato and hazard are in my opinion a great cover for our attacking options (doesn’t matter hazard will go to Chelsea) with some formation and fitness rotation not to mention rvp is injury prone and he’s pushing 30. Hazard can play in the centre of the park aswell so covering and rotating with an aging arteta, these guys are more of a long term insurance In my eyes. Doesn’t matter it wont happen anyway

  161. Just checked your picture Kelsey, Nice legs

  162. gooner lost in cornwall says:

Redders has got one like that in his cell ! 🙂

  163. fatgingergooner says:

You never said it was a 3D telly!

  164. Gooner In Exile says:

Sharkey a good analogy of Gibbs there (the flower one). The only thing I can think is Arsene thinks he is too talented to let go but not good enough for centre midfield so is trying to forge for him a career at left back. Never has a square peg been so unsuited to a round hole.

It seems unnatural for him to play close to the touch line always looking to come in field then he forgets he has no right foot so the only option is to use his left and slow the possession down.

Hopefully he will come back fit and positive but for me he doesn’t have the temperament for PL football he seems to calm and to lack that bit of aggression/drive that all good players need.

  165. Oz (on holiday) says:

Cheers for the good reads gie + fgg

Goetze would be a dream but I think he’ll only leave for barca or real.
I’d go for kagawa.or affelay, becausehe is a class act, barca saw something in him so the quality is there.unfortunently he got injured and cant get a look in.ay around 8million he would be a steal.a few seasons ago he was just as hyped up as hazard.

Malouda and cissoko would be good short term options

    @ CG
Honda would cost 25mil so doubt we will go for him.

  166. hey oz,
    yeah i know-‘get some sleep robbin’…lol
great call on AFFELAY…actually its a very intelligent scout m8…

  167. is affelay injured at the moment?

  168. dy says:

Henri’s sole goal the other night, Park’s goal against Bolton and AA23’s goal last season against Barca, they’re all perfectly timed, angled, bodies and feet in synced performance.

  169. Gooner In Exile says:

According to the club website the game at Bolton “could” be rescheduled.

  170. Big Raddy says:

    BR not happy today.

In London and free on 28th, flying home on afternoon of 29th.

  171. Gooner In Exile says:

Crapola Raddy……altho that Sunday pm flight could be missed….there’s always one Monday morning 😀

  172. evonne says:

    Morning GiE – why?

  173. Gooner In Exile says:

Because the FA Cup is Sunday 29th Evonne, therefore Tuesday 31st v Bolton away is a bit tight.

  174. evonne says:

Oh, ok, that’s a plausible excuse. It is going to feck up my carefully planned (around fixtures) holidays 😦

GiE – just one more question about the ‘home grown’ rules – are the policies fully implemented now? When did the regulations ‘go live’?
