Just a short second post today as all eyes will be on the TD, with supporters frantically F5ing every source of news they can find.
Who knows how much of a spur the 8:2 ‘humiliation’ was to the powers that be at Arsenal, but one thing is for sure, the 3 signings that have followed in quick succession have at last shown that we are serious about producing a team that can compete with the best this season.
After having highlighted the defence as our weakness yet again this summer, Arsène has finally done something about it. Mertesacker and Santos tick the quality, experience and size boxes. They’re both seasoned internationals and are proven winners.
At 26, Park Chu Young must also be entering his peak years although it is thought that we will only have him for 2 before he returns home for national service. He is the captain of South Korea and also brings experience as well as goals to the side.
So is that it? Are we done?
Well I hope not. We know that Cesc was irreplaceable, but from the ashes of the team that was built around him can rise a new more direct Arsenal that would owe more to the Invincibles than the team of recent years. Santos is a very attacking fullback whose record is 1 goal in 5 for Fenerbache – A’Cole’s record is 1 goal in 30.
Gervinho and Park are also very quick and have an eye for goal so all of a sudden we have the potential to score from all angles. All we need now is the midfielder to unlock defences with that killer (dare I say Cesc-like) pass.
Will Jack be promoted further up the pitch to fill that role? He certainly has the vision and passing ability, but his young frame was overplayed last season and he is paying the price now. Ramsey already looks exhausted and in need of support.
I would be happy with one more signing in midfield, but time is running out and candidates of real top quality are few and far between although there are seemingly plenty of names in the mix – add Fellaini and Dempsey to those already identified. The news that we have been linked to Honda this morning adds his name to a list that still includes Hazard (the preferred choice of many) and M’Vila who would certainly add strength but is more defensive in his play.
I’m greedy, I’d like the power of M’Vila and the craft of Hazard, but I don’t expect that will happen. Hazard is going nowhere I suspect. Honda will bridge the gap between the two in some way so maybe he will be the answer.
We’ve probably done enough to ensure we will be in a strong position for the rest of the season, but wouldn’t it be nice if we just made that last flagship signing that really showed our intent.
One thing is for sure, we are now in a far better position than our North London rivals and we will have some great new signings to light up the Emirates pitch and hopefully get the fans singing this season.
Well done Arsène, 3 rabbits out of the hat – just one more would be nice.

The seasons compared chart on this page would be better if it compared like for like games. That would show that we are only one point worse off versus last year, not six!
No dear, two more plus the three.
Sadly, it’s papering over the cracks yet again. Arsenal will struggle to finish top 6 this season & then we’ll lose the last of our quality, i.e. RvP (if he hasn’t already gone in January).
2 months ago Wenger said that to sell Fabregas & Nasri would demonstrate we have no ambition. I believe him.
It’s not partly of,its better than nothing.congrates in disquise
Thanks Diss, that’s a suggestion we’ll look at. We displayed the same comparison last year and so were just following on from that. Did I read that we were top of the league last season in terms of games against the other top four clubs?
Stats can drive you mad. If we go on a long unbeaten run now, that chart will be a source of encouragement rather than dismay – let’s hope it goes that way.
Let’s be greedy….two more rabbits please Mr W!!
Jesus Motto
Who did you want him to but
he has doen what we asked experienced players coming to their peak a germany CB international with 75 caps a world cup winning left back and an experienced forward. We need 2 maybe 3 more another CB? A defensive midfielder and a playmaker? (if its not jack). not there yet but a long way up the road and 4th is still possible. plus a crack at the cups.
I still want to know why we get injuries and then they take 3 months to get fit solve that and we could be even better off
£35-40mil for Sneijder would be the world class signing we actually need. It will prove that we can spend big to keep us up with the other top clubs!
Great post TA (the other one), loyalty is rare unfortunently, but hopefully players like jack, rvp, and verm stay on for years to come.
Hazard/Honda and m’Vila n i’ll be happy as larry
i would go for goetze instead hazard. I think he would be another nasri situation in future if we sign hazard. But at the moment getting him is impossible. I would like us to get marvin as a creative midfield replacement, his stat show something.
We need defenders with quality..djorou is gabbage
Mvila and song holding midfielders could be the new viera and petit with jack or rambo on rotation in front of them i still would like another striker aswell kevin doyle or and out and out finisher to score some of the numerious chances arsenal create going to be nailbiting stuff watch skysports around ten o clock
Germany and Brazil have the most talented, dedicated and loyal players, unlike Moroccan$ and Catalans. Let the later burn in hell for what they did to my beloved club.
A rough tally of net wages & transfer fees going into today for this
transfer window is (without Bendtner & Lansbury) that AFC are still saving about 75K in weekly wages & are up £25 mill in transfer
fees. (Assuming that loanees Vela & Denilsons wages have been passed on in full). Add in Nic & Henri & the figures rise to £130K+ in wages & possibly £35 mill in transfer fees. This is Net, so if we don’t buy any one else today this will be weekly wages saved & transfer fees profit. Looks like the money is there to spend without actually
making any new investment.
goetze would be perfect but dortmund won’t let him go yet…unfortunently. Instead of raiding chelsea for malouda or yossi bring in drogba i say
Wilshere is the new Petit, its just that people haven’t realised yet.
It’s not only players who can make a difference. I believe tactics play a part. The gunners play a hdl.I remembered they played like this against Newcastle in 2001. As the gunner attack broke down, a high ball sent Shearer in full flight. He was brought down by Campbell and NU won 3-1. However it had a happy ending. The gunners won the double that season.
Now ff to 2011.The defenders this time aint as good. So Wenger has to make sure the md guys must track back other wise gaps will be expolited by fast moving forwards.
If Wenger wants to play this way,he has to make sure he has the speedy players othrewise it will come to grief.
It’s interesting to speculate how we’ll play with the new additions. The new left back looks like one who loves to bomb forward and get his goals. The german is considered wily yet slow afoot. The combination of the two seems to make the notion of a high line even more risky. Will they play three at the back?
We’ve added speed on the wings with the two kids (although I suspect their contribution will be minimal). Does that mean we’ll be trying to use that speed and play more on the counter? Can Mertesacker keep us well enough organized to do so? Does that mean a change of formation?
Still need to acquire some offensive skill in the middle. Whether JW is out for 2 or 10 more games relying on him, AR and TR is unrealistic.
Nasri is not Moroccan. He’s French from Algerian background. I don’t blame either for going. But many who leave Arsenal later regret it & look back on their times fondly. That’s our revenge.
Just one creative “super quality”midfielder and another CB, would make me feel better. Still don`t think we can make top 4, just 3 games and were playing catch up!.
Another worry is African Cup of Nations.( why? every 2 years, come on FIFA sort it out!)
This signings has shown that arsene really want something this season.
London,
Don’t call me “people”. In my house Jack is known as “Manu”, so there 🙂
I am not getting through mountains of work today.
An AM and I’m calling Arsenal a top four side again. Happy Days.
@Diss at 12.14pm and Rasp at 12.17pm: A chart comparing each head-to-head tells you one thing, a chart (like that on this page) tracking performances chronologically tells you another. The current chart shows the momentum of the different phases of the season. As Rasp may recall, I wrote a post around December time drawing attention to the fact that, while we felt we were doing well at that stage (and even topped the league at one point), we were actually marginally behind where we had been at the same stage in 2009-10, but that Chelsea were massively behind where they had been and United and City no better than on par. My concern (which, ahem, was borne out by reality) was that we would go into the run-in without enough points in the bank.
So, yes, let’s have a second chart, but let’s keep the current one too.
Where did his Honda having a medical rumour come from? Haven’t seen it mentioned on anything other than that high quality site, Le Grove.
Hi 26m, I got it from kelsey this morning 😳 maybe I should be more cautious over my sources 🙂
I love the picture of Chu Young Park.
He looks so proud to be in the shirt.
3 players to go 1 player maker, 1 holdind midfielder, 1 lionheart defender
Cheers Rasp!
Hi chas, yes contrast it to the rather shy looking Ox and you see what experience does for a player’s demeanour – let’s hope he can transport that pride and confidence onto the pitch.
We now need a picture of Mertesacker growling at the camera 👿
If we do get M’Vila, should we assume he’ll play alongside Song so that we have a pair of DMs (not the bovvaboy/1980s fashionista kind….), as some have suggested? Seems logical to think that.
Hazard & M‘villa will be good additions bcos of the Africa nations cup when Song will not be available. The first eleven should be Schenzy
Sagna Mertasacker Vermaeleen Santos
Song
M‘villa Hazard
Walcott Gervinho
Van Persie
Subs : Fabianski, Koscieny, Rosicky, Park, Chamberlain, Ramsey, Wilshere, Arshavin, Jenkinson, Frimpong, Gibbs, Chammakk, Miayachi
Solid bench
Honda is definitely not coming. His agent has ruled it out and he’s injured.
bode
That bench would giv the mancs a better game than they had on Sunday
motto
That is soooo 3 hours ago
Wit or witout d new signings, i believ arsenal will finish strong dis season! Rosisky’s got good vision and fluidity in midfield. He doesn’t hang on d ball for too long lik AR. All he needs is good cover behind from d other two DM, he’ll play better dan fab4. He’s such a delight to watch! Is movement is lik modric, only he’s got better through balls!
Apparently Bendtner’s move has fallen through
——————Szcezeny
Sagna Mertasacker Vermaeleen Santos
—–Ramsey,Song,Wilshere
—–Walcott,RvP,Gervinho.
I am the worst one on here for believing transfers will go through, I can just about allow myself to believe that Mertasacker will join but new midfielders are just are too much. I know I should take the view the more the better and I do but believing that it will actually happen is just a leap too far for me.
My guess is that the team above will be the main thrust of the season.
Re Honda. It was stated on Sky Sports news and in any case the fact that he is injured would tick most of the right boxes.
I guess the guy who does all this transfer talk has to say anything he hears or gets tweeted as after 11.PM he is out of a job until January 🙂
Man city have applied to the FA for special permission to name a squad of 30 for every game with eleven subs and at half time for all 11 to be subbed every game so that harmony can be kept at the club.
Oh the transfer merrygoround continues.
Anything confirmed yet?
I really hope Bendtner stays. He could definitely do a job for us and if I ever see him in a Stoke shirt I will know that NOTHING will EVER be sacred EVER AGAIN.
Bentner?? Naaaa! No more heart attacks pls!
Kelsey,
If all our squad was fit we could apply to play two ‘keepers four centre backs, four fullbacks, seven midfielders, five strikers and still have something left over for the bench.
Where are the offers for all those excellent squad players who we all think of as surplus to requirements. Nobody seems to want Bendtner, Diaby, Rosicky, Almunia, Squillaci and Djourou. The only ones moved out so far are Eboue, Traore and Denilson on loan.
Anyone explain why Park Chu Young is on Arsenal Player in his new kit yet the Beeb still say it’s unconfirmed?
AW should just go ahead and find us that creative midfielder before 11pm. We’re waiting anxiously.
Probably because his registration documents are being processed. I think so long as the documents are in the hands of the FA before the window closes the registration will still go through.
AW should just go ahead and give us a creative midfielder b4 11pm, pls. We’re waiting anxiously.
Interestingly enough guys, Lansbury is being shipped out on a 1yr loan to West Ham. Makes me believe that a midfielder is coming in.
WG
Neither Mertesacker or Santos have been mentioned on Arsenal.com.
Does that mean they haven’t signed or that Arsenal are waiting until later in the day in the hope they can also make other announcements?
I’ve just met thiery henry in sloane street .what a let down he wouldn’t even let me have a photo he’s rude and misrable .what a let down some times it’s best not to meet your heros what a let down horrible man.
Santos signing has just been confirmed br Arsenal.
@G5
I’ve read reports that Santos’s Work Permit has been agreed, so I’m sure he will be announced later.
It wouldn’t surprise me if we see a blitz on the website later confirming multiple signings at once.
WG
Apparently Gyan has handed a transfer request in to Sunderland….any takers?
You have to wait untill the Chairman has notified his favourite newspaper The Star, before anything appears on the Asenal website.
Mickeyk, he may have read a few of your posts…. 😉 Just kidding!
Anyone else a little overwhelmed?
3 in almost definitely anymore and I might feint. I still expect Cahill to be announced (although I might also just taken some acid 🙂 )
Santos officially confirmed on Arsenal.com
Link to follow when I can get on the site..
WG
Would love to sign Gyan, a proper dangerous striker. Plus, when we play Liverpool, we could enjoy watching him get some revenge on Suarez for cheating Ghana out of the World Cup.
Wigan, here is that linke…
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/santos-confirmed-as-an-arsenal-player
Exile, until we sign a quality midfielder, I’ll be feeling underwhelmed, despite this very strange frenzy of activity.
My sense of bewilderment is heightened by Santos being issued with the number 11 shirt. A left back, our number 11. What is the world coming to?
@Brigham
Thanks 🙂
Mertesacker to follow I’m sure, so it’s all good to see it confirmed. I still expect that creative midifielder to sign today, Arsene is in France sorting it out.
WG
I don’t know about anyone else but I absolutely love it when I’m on my way somewhere and a total stranger asks for a chat and an autograph.
I’m sure to a PL footballer a meeting like that is the same as a charity “surveyor” on a high street is to us. Unwanted hindrance to what we want to be doing.
Santos can take dead balls can’t he? I mean what’s the point in signing a Brazilian who can’t.
That may be true Exile, but to be honest, we put these guys into such a lap of luxury with our hard-earned money, the least they could do is show some respect. I like Henry but treating a fan like that isn’t on.
I am going to carry on being miserable for the time being as without a playmaker RvP will be firing blanks and will join me sulking on the stairs.
The defence strengthening has seen me elevate the squad to fifth place status, but I want us to smash our way into the top four all guns blazing.
Still believing though.
26May, I can still remember the comment from Gallas on signing and being handed Bergkamp’s old shirt number…
“This is the closest I have ever got to the Arsenal number ten” 🙂
@26may1989 not as weird as Gallas getting the no 10 shirt!
26 are you calling MickeyK a fan? 😉
ha ha snap brigham
GiE,
There’s no chance we will sign Cahill now, I think he’ll go to totnum if anywhere.
@GIE 3.19 Think Dennilson!
A Gallas joke? That implies he smiled! 🙂
Our traditional shirt numbers are now bonkers:
1. GK who’ll never play for us again
2. Midfielder
3. RB
4. Vacant (sniff, sniff).
5. CB (at last, one that makes sense)
6. CB (another one, hooray!)
7. Attacking midfeilder (and another)
8. Vacant (bastard).
9. Striker (but who knows how good?)
10. Striker
11. LB
So six of the eleven are wrong. Perhaps by 11pm, the vacancies above will have been filled….
Santos announced on arsenal.com!
Not confident about a midfielder, but fingers crossed
Henry is an idiot if that’s true. Without fans he’d be a nobody.
I see Na$ri continues to issue criical statements about Arsenal, apparently their training is superior to ours now, I’m looking forward to the day when his massive ego gets the better of him and we can say “how the mighty fall”
mickey,
Arsenal only have one fax machine and that has pulled it’s hamstring 🙂
if hes in france hopefully its m’vila and hazard (i’d settle for marvin martin though, his assist tally last season was amazing).
@Oz
I think with the departure of Lansbury it will be a creative midfielder rather than a defensive one, or someone Arsene thinks can do both….I think M’Vila will probably be it and finish our incoming transfer activity (once Mertesacker confirmed).
WG
@ WG
Glad lansbury is only leaving on loan, and i hope he proves himself at west ham so he can come back and fight his way into the team.
Your probably right, but don’t jinx it, im hoping for another three (including big per), i’d settle for two if bendy stays, and MC’s confidence returns
Just popped on to say ……………….. and you lot have already said everything! 🙂
I have been waiting anxiously for the announcement of a super dooper creative midfielder or a hard nosed M’Villa type DM, and I am very underwhelmed to learn Benayoun’s agent has said he is likely to go to Arsenal.
Is that it? An injury prone, flickering light not good enough for Chelsea?
Well I am sure we are pleased to help out the Chavs.
Just being nervy, but Nasri + Cesc = Benayoun? Seriously?
Still 7 hours to go, and I know it is not just down to Arsenal now, the other clubs must want to sell, but this should have been put to bed weeks ago.
Benayoin- what a joke! Pathetic
Adam Johnson coming on loan?!?
Yossi could be a handy squad player but definently not a starter or the creative spark we need in the midfield. Chelsea can chuck us alex though
Adam Johnson on a loan deal, I can’t see how we can lose.
We are ok in the defensive midfield areas (assuming Song and Frimpong remember to take the medication). It is the playmaker/deadball specialist we need.
Still believing.
Back later for sure.
GIE,
Where did you hear the Johnson loan thing —- or were you winding us up — smacked botty time if you were! 🙂
@RA
Welcome to the AA Transfer Deadline Party 😀
As i’ve said above I understand Arsene is in France negotiating a transfer. Why Arsene is doing it personally I don’t know, but needs must and I think we will see our midfield signing today.
I don’t think Benayoun is the answer and Arsene can’t see him as a permanent replacement, I think if we did go for him it would be merely to have another body who can play in midfield, rather than him actually being a replacement for Cesc of Na$ri.
Benayoun is a player who can do a job for us, so perhaps with a bit of London Colney action he’ll come back to form?
WG
There is an interesting split going on, those who prefer we sign a new DM in the form of M’Vila and those who would prefer a new creative midfielder in the form of Martin or Hazard.
Given a choice I would prefer a CM as I think Song and Pong have got the DM covered.
Lionel Messi is fed up with being called a pansy and wouldn’t take the bashing in the PL so has agreed to join Arsenal on a one year loan deal providing Almunia goes to Barcelona as eigth choice keeper in case they get an outbreak of foot and mouth.(from a reliable source)
Wigan/Oz: I agree, I think we’ll be trying to land M’Vila this afternoon, freeing Wilshere and Ramsey from duties further back on the pitch.
Now that is more believable than the story of Wenger and Kroenke arguing over players wages.
RA,
it was on twitter
.i know some of you like twitter but people following other people who are following other people, does my head in.
WG,
most probably because whoever he is after only speaks french.
It’a official Arsenal.com has announced that Mertesacker is about to join Arsenal.
Mertesacker confirmed!! 🙂
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/per-mertesacker-set-to-join-arsenal
WG
Hi WG, 🙂
Benayoun would only ever be a short-term deal as he is 31 going on 32 I think.
This last day of the TW is a weird time — part anxious hope — part resigned to disappointment.
My MU friends from bloody Surrey are having a wonderful time at my expense. They are pushing their luck let me tell you – and them!!!!
Houston we have a defence
@RA
Totally agree on Benayoun, I bet he’d be cheap as Chelski want rid as well.
Tell your ManYoo friends that the chicken that makes the most noise is the one that gets eaten first 😀
WG
Afternoon all, fashionably late for the party and it seems the soundest spanking of all time has put a rocket up the board’s arse!
I know it’s been said before a million times but why oh why couldn’t this have been done a while ago? Even last week would have been better…
Anyway, let’s just enjoy the 2 new boys (is it safe to say 3 yet? I fear to jinx it when it hasn’t been officially confirmed) and keep lighting those votive candles and closing any open umbrellas we find lying about the office/home/wherever we are.
WG – If Dick Law is the spanner he’s made out to be (in more than one sense) I think Wenger going over and doing the dirty work makes a lot of sense. Noone knows what goes on behind closed doors but I’m sure there is some twat or twats somewhere in the organisation royally effing up everything in sight.
They should just keep a lookout for someone who can’t do even the simplest things right. Give them a really easy test and see if they fail horribly, like ask them to get you a cuppa and then if you hear every piece of crockery in the Emirates being broken and they bring you a bowl of dog food, they should probably get the sack.
WG, 🙂
Altho’ I thought it was the one that had to go on a date with Tevez!
WG,
It is unlike Arsenal to say he is about to join us rather than he HAS joined us. Or did I misread that – slight probs with my links today!
Gotta feel sorry for Cayhill. We’ve bought 3 players for less than Bolton wanted for him just coz he’s English. Poor bloke, he was dying to join us.
Bring on Swansea – we’ve got to close that goal difference!
CG,
I saw Law at the CL draw, (I think) and he seemed to be a large, affable, grinning loon to me.
Crikey, I could be describing myself — note to self — admit nothing! 🙂
I meant Cahill – too much excitement for one day!
Mertesacker joined us yesterday coz he’s already back training with the German team.
Danny,
I understand from an ex-colleague Oop North, that MU have dangled the chance of him joining them next Jan as he wants to stay in the N West of England. Maybe WG has heard some such gossip in Wigan?
My money is on him joining the Spuds and having an immense game against us in the next derby. Bastard!! (in case he does) 🙂
Hi Camberwell, it probably was not done earlier because we would not have had the deals we are getting now. Pressure of TW shutting works from two sides.
I for one do not believe that the 8-2 against the Mancs has put extra pressure behind the BoD/Wenger to act. For the redtops this is an easy storyline, but a shrewd negotiator uses time-pressure to his/her advantage. Arsenal are very astute negotiators and good for them. They cannot increase season ticket prices – controversially – on the one hand, and throw extra millions away for player purchases on the other hand.
@RA
I’ll admit, my metaphor is rather poor in comparison to yours heheh
I think Arsenal.com is a bit shy on Mertesacker because they probably haven’t completed his profile and got all of his pics…especially if as Danny above reports that he is back in Germany for their training camp.
WG
Do you really think that 8-2 defeat has rushed things to such an extent? nothing is logical except AW just wont buy proven PL players regardless of price. Last Pl player bought was silvestre, i rest my case.
@RA
Not heard anything up ‘ere in pie-eating country, other than the stock rumours that Cahill was on his way to a london club.
By all accounts Cahill hates ManYoo, but again thats unsubstantiated, just pub gossip.
WG
Similar to Kelsey, I don’t believe the 8:2 result had any effect whatsoever on the transfer strategy.
I believe these players have been identified and Arsene being Arsene wanted to do the deal last minute to get a good bargain and not give anyone else a chance to gazump him.
Seems to have worked for the three signed in the last 2 days.
WG
is it too much to ask for a box to box midfielder of the Gerrard mould? or are those days over?
with so much importance on positioning and shape, and with the emergence of the popular holding midfield role, i fear we will never see a player like Gerrard again. shame, cos a player like that would catapult this team back into contenders.
We can relax about Benayon – he’s left the Israeli national team to join the Scum before heading back.
Arsene had to wait til the sales of Cesc and Nasri were completed before he could start negotiations for other players, after all, if Man City and Barca hadnt come forward with the cash then they would still be Arsenal players.
It was unfortunate that by the time the money had hit our bank account the season had already got underway. Important games at Udinese and that dreadful day in Manchester followed quickly, not giving AW any time to think about transfers. Thats the reason we lost out on Mata according to reports, because AW was unwilling to discuss transfers whilst the team were concentrating on matches.
It is only now that AW has had time to assess his targets and decide which of those would give him the best return on the field. I believe these players were earmarked a long time ago by Wenger, and he now has the peace and quiet needed to get the deals done.
1 more please Arsene!
Sorry if i appear flippant today, but none of us know what is really going on and it passes the time.
I stand corrected – by almost everyone!
*goes back to candle-lighting, prayer-murmuring and rabbit-paw-stroking*
lansbury has gone out on loan to West Ham,official. strange Norwich offered 1.5 million for him at the end of July.
We are culling the squad for sure, a directive by …..?
Many thanks to all AA’ers who contributed to my morning post. And a special thank you to 26: your 12.44 comment was one of the best I ever read on AA.
As Rasp explained, there was some confusion this morning re which post should have gone up today. However, the quality of the responses and the high number of hits (in the short time the post was out), has made me decide to reissue the post in a week or so (if Peaches and Rasp let me, that is 😛 ). I will incorporate the comments you made today as much as possible, so we can move the debate further.
Once again, thanks for your quality contributions!
Would we really sign 31 year old Benayoun?.
We could have had 30 year Scott Parker!…..too late he`s gone to the spuds!.
I think we are all nearly in agreement, we want a world class CM,….so come on Arsene, we cant all be wrong!
OK,
I am afraid that I am going to upset all my buds by swimming against the perceived wisdom re the 8:2 defeat.
The current swathe of defensive players suddenly joining us was indeed prompted by that devastating defeat.
This is not part of some great, cunning scheme or a tactical strategy to play poker to force prices down. All these players were available in June and were presumably deemed not to be “of sufficient quality”, but now suddenly they are.
Other players we have tried to get (Hazard or Goetze) in the past few days we have been told to bog off, they are not for sale.
I believe, (and I have no more info than London – who I know will disagree with me 🙂 ) that both Kroenke and Arsene realized after Sunday that matters could not be left as they were, and reinforcements were necessary.
A no-brainer really. We are all fallible you know – even AW!! 🙂
Gie I have been going to watch arsenal since 1976 when I was six years old and I am a true arsenal surporter. Not some johnny come lately.just because someone doesn’t agree with you doesn’t make them less of a fan than you .meeting henry was a let down and I’m in titiled to say so .
RA. I can’t agree either. Transfers do not get done (at Arsenal) without thought and research. AW will have targeted these players at the beginning of summer. The MU defeat will have given added thrust but no more.
RA;
I still prefer to buy into the theory that the BoD would not pay the wages of the “big stars” hence the lower grade singings.
TA
May I compliment you on the second paragraph of your 4.20 it is comments like that that keep my spirits up.
CG,
I think I was agreeing with you, which is the most important thing. 🙂
TA,
Let me know the date today’s Post will be re-posted, as after my fulsome praise for you, and my clinical exposition of the philosophical differences between loyalty and ambition, (a little advanced, admittedly) I expected at least a mention in despatches, instead of all this unseemly sucking up to 26 – who won’t be impressed – and I will ensure that I book a day’s holiday!!!!! 🙂
RA,
I certainly feel, there might have been a slight nudge in this direction after sunday`s close defeat. 🙂
Any “Big Stars” that came onto the market were snufled up by the financial heavy weights forcing to shop in the way we did, what are your thoughts on that theory?
GN5,
You might be right, but the two points are not mutually exclusive. 🙂
Mickeyk. Of course you are entitled to say he is a horrible man. I have met TH a few times and found him to be extremely likeable and a proper Gooner. But it was not in the street, perhaps he was in a hurry and knew if he stopped for you then he would be mobbed.
That said, I met George Best in Kings Road and he was charming, giving me an autograph and having his pic taken. Top bloke.
RA – cheers. Agreeing with me IS the most important thing. Now if only everyone I knew would wake up and realise it! 😀
So Mertesacker confirmed then? A great tree of a man standing 6’6″…let’s hope he injures half the Stoke team at their first corner.
Now that’s wrapped up, off he goes to feature in the Germany-Austria friendly. Let’s hope he doesn’t “do an Arsenal” and come back crocked!
I remember bumping into SuperMac back in ’77 coming out of Selfridges. He was ok but what got me was that he was wearing glasses! I understood then why he always claimed Stapleton’s goals…..
Arteta for 10million……..Looking likely
and a brazilian called Augusto from Leverkusen…..possibly
M’Vila priced out of move…………
Interestingly Per Mertesacker has confirmed he has a contract until 2015 and confirms it is a life-long wish to play in the English Premier League.
“Some days it was even rumored, now it’s perfect: Per Mertesacker changes with immediate effect to the English Premier League club Arsenal. He signed a contract until 2015.
After the departure of defender Sami Nasri and Cesc Fabregas had the “Gunners”, as Arsenal is also called, a big defensive problem. Coach Arsene Wenger saw and took action with Per Mertesacker his players desire to stabilize the defense. For Per Mertesacker to a long-cherished wish has come true. He never made a secret of the fact that most excites him the English league.
Already in two weeks by return with his new club in a football stadium. On 13 September comes to Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League with Borussia Dortmund for the first group game.”
Apologies for the rubbish translation – thats Google Translate for you.

TA, apologies that your post wasn’t headline all day but as you can see, people were dying to join the transfer bingo.
We’d be delighted to republish your post with any additions you care to add, it has received 2,200 hits and so was a great success.
As a contrast this hastily compiled post has over 9,000 – just goes to show you that nothing gets in the way of the human urge to speculate 😆
Mickeyk it was a joke that’s why I put 😉 at the end.
RA the Adam Johnson thing was off BBC who got it from a reliable source on who posted it on Twitter. I was in pique of transfer deadline frenzy. Have since had to concentrate back on work.
As well as 8-2 defeat may have helped loosen purse strings I have to think empty seats and General Sale Swansea game may also have helped persuade the powers that be.
Lansbury to West Ham is a shame but with players coming in my guess is a bit more schooling in order before he makes the leap, where better to learn some dark arts than under FatSam
Can’t believe I’m about to write this, but I agree with Red Arse. 😉
Of course the players we’re snaffling have been researched, the work didn’t just begin the moment Howard Webb put us out of our misery on Sunday afternoon. But I don’t see this bizarre blitz (including the offloading of players like Sunu, Traore and Lansbury) as the culmination of some Dr No-like brilliant strategy. After all, in the past Wenger (quite rightly) said bringing in a lot of players in one go can’t be done easily.
This summer has been well and truly screwed up, and (for whatever reason) the hammering Rooney and Co inflicted has prompted much of the frenetic activity we’re seeing. I don’t say Wenger was mainly responsible, or even responsible at all, for that screw-up, as none of us knows what goes on behind the scenes. and I also don’t deny the need for these signings to be made (though bringing in a new LB was a surprise to me). But what we’re seeing now is anything but planned. The fact we’re buying frmo clubs that are weakened shows that we are focusing on getting players from places we can within the very limited time available (Fenerbahce are under the cosh for match fixing; Monaco have been relegated; and Werder Bremen have financial problems).
And Total, thanks for your kind words!
RA 😛 😛 You have already been called ‘un homme de beaucoup de merite’ on several occasions, but as it goes with men of intellectual grandeur, their appetite for praise and recognition is insatiable. Your philosophical comment was so good that it left me speechless indeed, – but like the Terminator: I’ll be back. So if you are interested in my response – and I know you are – do not book that AL day, yet 😉
it’s like a conspiracy theory going on here. We got thrashed..end of.
The only thing That i don’t understand is why so often tansfers take ages for all the various reasons but whenever the transfer window is about to close there is a frantic dash and signings happen in less than a day.
I have met many ex Arsenal players years after they played for the club and usually one finds that with age they are very nice people.Wilson and Mcclintock stand out for me even though GG is a man i have met many times.
Swansea is our first game against european opponents.
Jack Kelsey running the Arsenal shop…..
Ah the good old Welsh!
Joel campbell’s going out on loan.
I won’t repeat it now in detail Danny, but i sat next to jack on the plane over to brussels for the first leg fairs cup final.very humble man.
So it’s confirmed……….
‘Per the Meersack doth come ! 🙂
Hi all
Just rushed through the comments before I scrape the mud off
kelsey my friend – you are in fine form today, your comments have had me chuckling
We surely must sign a creative midfielder please and then we’re set 🙂
Lucky we has Ray Kennedy that day…….
Hi BR, 🙂
That’s OK, (your 4:49)
I have many opinions and none of them are gospel.
We are symbolic of free speech and free thinking personified. You disagree with my opinion (based on guesswork) and I disagree with yours. (based on …..?) 🙂
None of us know what really happens in these matters, so our differing character traits come into play in forming our opinions/guesses, which in turn is conditioned by our own unique life experiences.
I’ve spent the day with both gooners and spuds, to say we struggled to get masses done is an underestimation – obviously my boys the gooners worked the hardest 🙂
I know I shouldn’t care less but I’ll be interested to see how the Modric problem gets solved.
I meant to say – lucky we had Ray Kennedy as sub that day…..
More from BBC Sport’s Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta. McNulty says: “Everton’s Mikel Arteta is emerging as the latest big-name target for Arsenal as they seek a midfield man to complete their signings. Word on Merseyside is no deal as yet – but Everton are vulnerable to a big offer and £10m may yet be enough. Will be a tense few hours for David Moyes if Arsenal press strongly.”
Danny. Those were the days …..
26 & RA. I cannot agree. AW stated at season’s end that we would see unprecedented activity in the transfer market.
He knew then that CF was going and $$ likely to leave. Furthermore, he had identified the players who needed to be moved on and how many players were required to re-establish the strength of the squad.
we will never know the truth but I prefer my version of events .
Danny i won’t go there as i would bore you more than Red Arse 😉
This Arteta rumour is heating up – v.injury prone though :-S
Joel campbell has gone out on loan…thoughts.
Campbell couldn’t get work permit so Arsenal had to send him to Holland/France/Spain anyway.
Irish Did you see one of our ex players has gone to Shamrock Rovers? Rohan Ricketts
Do I bore you Danny? 🙂
BR – No never heard that. I heard Rovers mentioned on the news today but couldn’t hear was it was over the noise of machines at work. Rovers spending that European cash. I’ve always associated him with the Spuds to be honest 😆
Sylvestre was a proven premier leage player. He’d proved he was shit loads of times. I’ve got a feeling that may be our lot. 5 1/2 hours left though. Hope I’m wrong. Even with what we’ve got I’m well confident of 4th. A creative midfielder and I’l start getting carried away
@GoonerGeezer TRANSFER NEWS: Holby City have made a last minute bid for Michael Owen.
😆
kelsey. IMO a good move for all concerned
GM – heh 😀 😀
Fergie knew it too, letting him go to a rival for peanuts like that. What I don’t get is how someone could be a lynchpin of a title-winning defence and then just suddenly become absolute toilet.
Or was he shit at Scum United too?
There are more Irish teams in Europe than scottish. But you know that already. 🙂 Nice though eh.
If Bendtner doesn’t get sold or loaned it will destroy his famed confidence and what will AW do? Can he honestly say he has a place for Nik.?
Hope he gets a club
CG. Age withers us all ….
Thanks London for compliment earlier 🙂
RA, 26,
The 8-2 drumming will not have been more than a little nudge. Usually we see AW at his most determent, some say recalcitrant, if and when everybody starts screaming we need more signings after a bad result. So we would have seen the opposite of what is happening now. These negotiations must have been planned well in advance and had/have Wenger’s full support.
A shrewd negotiator does not only use time pressure to his advantage, but also perceived desperation of the opposition, and as 26 and others have pointed out, the clubs we approached for their players had a clear need to sell. I say ‘chapeau’ to Wenger and other negotiators.
GM – Delighted, hope they can keep up the form though, it’ll hit in to Ireland’s off season so it’ll be tough for them. Ireland changed to summer football to get into Europe, now its a matter of how to stay there
BR,
I know I should leave this alone as you are not for turning, but hey ho! 🙂
With respect, you are being a teensy bit specious with your Arsene quote, leaving out a key component in your recall.
What he and Gazidis said (not verbatim) was that – we would be very active and early in the transfer market.
It could be argued he was correct about being early, if you include the 4 young kids he bought or pinched for buttons early on, and then possibly the Gerv and Ryo in July (?) and Ox in August (?), but you would have hard job convincing me, and many others I suspect, that his statement melds with a frantic last day signing of three players, and an apparently desperate casting about for an AM as first one (Hazard) and then another (Goetze) is made unavailable.
But opinions are just that. You have yours and I have mine.
RA – Wasn’t Ryo signed last year, or in January at least? He went on loan to Feyenoord because he couldn’t get a work permit.
JackWilshere Jack Wilshere
Watching #DeadLineDay eating Jammy Dodgers! Simon Thomas or Georgie Thompson please give me some good news about Arteta! #ILoveAFC.
I say let’s leave for another time the discussion of how the club got to this stage in the summer before becoming active – I think there’s a lot to debate in it, but the main thing right now is to see how the final hours of the transfer window plays out. Principally, are we going to get our creative midfielder (or even a holding midfielder) in the next five hours or so?
Hi Irish, 🙂
Yes, I was being generous! 🙂
I was surprised to read some comments stating Cahill was a better player than Mertsecker…… FFS. We have signed a monster player who is Captain of the emerging German team, Cahill is nowhere near the quality.
As to his pace, I cannot recall Adams or Bould being quick and they are the best CB pairing ever in the PL. Intelligence is far more important and Per seems to have it in spades.
26,
I would be happy with Arteta, and the media noises point to that happening.
Irish, correct re Ryo. And I may not be a Twitterer (is that even the correct term?), but I love seeing what LJ posts, gives a real insight into the players’ views. Not sure the Arsenal dietician will be too pleased to read it though.
RA,
A fit Arteta would be a good addition but a long way from top drawer.
Seems lame that we sold one of the Spaniards that won the world cup and we “replace” with another that cant even get into the Spain squad. I cant get excited about Arteta I’m afraid – we can do better I would have thought.
RA – Haha fair enough 🙂
BR – On the couple occasions I’ve watched Werder I’ve been more impressed with Naldo, more athletic and just as strong and tall as Mertersacker.
BR,
Per is our man, and that makes him better than Cahill, whatever others might say. Anyway, he has height and experience which is just what we need.
I was never keen on Cahill anyway, as I said previously, he looks like a tall man from the waist up and a tiddler with those little legs.
I don’t know who said Cahill was fast, or faster than Per, but dare I say it? Not in my opinion. 🙂
Raddy, I think Philipp Lahm is Germany’s captain, but I take your point – Mertesacker may not be the quickest and may have made the odd error, but he’s still clearly better than Cahill.
RA: Arteta? Got to be honest, that would still leave me underwhelmed. But then I knew my expectations were too high, so I’m certainly not going to complain if that one pans out.
Which is the best website to keep up to date with all transfers around other clubs?
RA. You know I love a bit of banter ……
I would love to see us sign Christian Eriksen from Ajax, both for selfish and AFC reasons. The kid is going to be one of the great players of his generation.
Just some thoguths. This last minute flurry of activity seems totally consistent with the theory put forward that Arsene and the board were at loggerheads about top-top signings and paying top wages. All of these players seem like A- players — very good, but perhaps not top class. So Wenger seems to have made his peace that those are better than nothing. And Mertesacker and Park will both bring toughness and leadership. Within that slightly less than superstar category, those qualities seem to really make the difference, and ManU and Chelsea are loaded with just that type of player. Now, perhaps Wenger really does have permission to go get an A+ player as well, a Goetze or Hazard, but it will be tough to do that before the window closes. Maybe we get another midfielder, consolidate, and the marquee signing comes later.
26. Wrong info from another site … must do better research. 😎

A few years ago, we tried and failed to get Vicente from Valencia. Well, he’s only 30 and has just joined Gus Poyet’s Brighton. Interesting. Don’t know what he’ll make of Doncaster and Millwall though.

2.7 – Only five players have created more chances per 90 mins in the Premier League since 06/07 than Mikel Arteta.
Remember the feeling when Bergkamp signed? Can’t say I’ve got it today…
Irish,
We agree yet again. Given my ruthers, I would ruther have Naldo too, but I suspect that was not an option. 😦 But we have what we have, and I am content with Per.
Micky,
I kept everything crossed hoping for Hazard, altho’ I do not know why AW did not negotiate for Affellay when Barca were trying to get Cesc.
Affellay is brill, and I doubt he will get much playing time in that Barca team. Oh well!
Anyway, we won’t get either, so Artetetetetaaa is better than nothing, and he isn’t a bad player, and at 30 (?) is well experienced in the PL.
Kelsey,
Last window when I was a regular over there Joe Cole was a done deal. Fact.
I know I’m dreaming with Sneijder but that would signal some real freaking intent. To the fans, players already here and others arriving that the club is going to pull out all the stops to get some silverware. Come on there’s still (a little bit of) time!
RA,
I would certainly elevate myself to contented. At least Arteta is purpose built for the position we most need.
26 May – One is a Tweeter 😉 and I will be here until 11 tonight to keep ye updated with events on Twitter.
Top top players went to top top clubs with far, far greater budgets to spend on wages than we can. Isn’t the financial disparity between City-Na$ri and Chelsea-Mata and Arsenal glaringly obvious.
It’s not permission Wenger needs it is a player that neither City,Chelsea, Barça nor Real need to buy.
Why are Citeh signing Hargreaves? Makes no sense.
So, in the AA Summer Comings and Goings table, does Joel Campbell go in both the incoming and loaned out lists? (Sorry, my PC doesn’t display the lists themselves for some reason, apols if the answer is already there.)
My only guess as to why Hardgreaves may go to City is an attempt by them to get one over on United.
Irish, I’m glad one is a Tweeter (the Queen really did have quite an impact in Ireland, didn’t she?)!
I think the logic of Hargreaves to City is to cover for Yayayayayaya Toure when he goes off for African Nations duty in Feb. Without wishing too much negativity for Hargreaves, who seems a nice lad hit by bad luck, here’s hoping Mancini’s calculation turns out badly. Ok, that is wishing negativity on Hargreaves, but so be it.
But United released him, seen as he has played about 10mins for him over 3 seasons? The man’s career is over, which is a pity cos he was a decent player at Bayern. And we thought we had problems with Rosicky??!
London,
Whereas I reckon the only reason Hargreaves is going to City is so that Utd can get one over on City 🙂
26
lol
*for them
Right, can’t be sitting here until 11.
Peep in every hour or so.
I think 26’s theory is the most plausible but yours is the funniest Micky.
26 May – One does not disagree with one’s sentiment regarding one Owen Hargreaves to one Man Shitty.
Drenthe in talks to move from Real Madrid to Everton. Can we sneak Tim Cahill away with Arteta?
I read that in Queen-speak, Irish, and it was great!
26May – 😆 The Queen is a Gooner and loves tea, it would be wrong for one not to love her.
Illy
It was a different era when Bergkamp signed, back then we were one of the two financial heavy weights in England but today?………We are lucky to have someone who is capable of finding talent hidden in every corner of the world. The alternative would be Cahill and Parker that is how global the thinking of some of our rivals is. And if that doesn’t make you shudder it certainly does me.
Tea, horse-racing, dogs – the Queen was made for Ireland! And great to hear she’s a Gooner!
Apparently she is partial to a pint of Guiness as well.
Evening all, been hid away from transfer news today. Any news on M’Vila or Vargas or is the big player just Arteta.
No real news barum
The Queen is a winner all round then for me 🙂
Okay, I have to go be a domestic goddess for an hour, then I’ll be back to keep non-tweeters updated.
It may be Arteta barumgooner
benayoun is back on according to sky
The news “on the street” is that we have been priced out of the M’Villa move, and the hazard deal died the death when we ‘pinched’ Chuey Louey from Lille.
The latest, (from an Arsenal insider) whatever that means, is that the Arteteteteaa deal has ‘stalled’ because Everton are playing hardball and want a bucket load of money for the 31 y.o. that Arsenal will not pay — yet!
That would appear to have been the only transfer deal left still being worked on, but there is still 4 hrs left.
WARNING: The above has been gleaned from various ‘dodgy’ sources – that is to say unconfirmed — including friends, family, local radio and my mafia friend!
They are saying Benyaoun to us on a loan is confirmed O_O

Chelsea’s Yossi Benayoun in talks with Arsenal over potential move #ssn #deadlineday
(not confirmed, sorry about last post)
Lifelong Gooner 2:31. The reason no one has come in for Bendtner..Diaby..Rosicky..Almunia..Squillaci and Djourou = All except Rosicky are crap.
Neither Arteta nor Youssi excite me but both could do a job. Our first choice midfield will remain Ramsey, Song and Wilshire. I have confidence in them. The new man, if he is not a super-talent, is just back up
Arteta is good quality. Benayoun is a lightweight crocked has been.
If Wenger chooses Benayoun over Arteta he has lost it.
Thank guys, just been watching ssn too. Agree BR both are pretty good and maybe a bit more direct than what we have but not the exciting player we all maybe hoped for. plus 10m for a 31yr old Arteta seems a bit steep and goes against Arsenes usual philosophy.
My avatar’s fixed best signing of this window 🙂
Barum. Agree completely. €10m for a 31 y.o. is way too much, unless he is proven CL quality.
Arteta is 29.
Arteta is 29 not 31
Sorry 26m, I thought they said 31 on sky.
GM. It is a tip top avatar and adds some class to the site.
Despite a truckload of rumours and media spin, Manchester United have categorically stated that their prime match winner is NOT for sale and any further offers for Howard Webb will be rebuffed. 😉
http://www.evertonfc.com/player-profile/mikel-arteta
Barum. You made me look a complete and utter fool
interest withdrawn in Arteta ! If its just Benny then its gona be a bit of a disappointing end to the window.
Haha BR. was it me ?
No Barum, I have been a fool from birth and happy to be so!
Barumgooner….that’s a blow……benayoun= WTF
29 eh? Sign him up!
Had a soak in the bath and a think and I like Arteta a whole lot more now I’ve remembered he’s a dead eyed dick with the dead ball.
Well Arttetteaa deal is off so my accountant’s mafia man was right and you heard it on AA first.
Bugger, I am really, really deflated now. Benayoun? 😦
Word is that his choice was the Spuds but when they signed Parker, they withdrew their interest.
We are out of the Arteta deal. Had enough.
Well done Arsene. Another summer of 40m profit.
Why didn’t we do Arteta? Were we a million out?
Oh bollocks!
I hope the signings we made turn out alright but we need cover as good, for Jack.he was over played last season and that is a crucial position. The BBC say we have made a bid of 10 million for Arteta and Everton are skint.
Don’t think we will see vela or lansbury again, but where is MANUEL.
RA,
you know I love you 😉
Is it off or is it on?
Usual crap journo spin. Saying that AFC are cheapskates and trying to force poor old Everton into a firesale for Arteta, who isn’t even an International.
I think €10m is a very fair price – he is 29 (barum) and has a poor injury record. If we pay that much the Toffess can consider themselves fortunate
Deal has broken down. BBC and sky
Jamie 7:26 …. No, probably the reason is cos he can get Benayoun on loan, which is obviously the cheaper option than Arteta.
10m is a fair price but when you are at the Deadline and it is that or nothing or worse benayoun I think another couple of million is hardly going to break the bank. We need midfielders.
VCC,
I’ve been dreading asking you this, but the moment has arrived. Which part of your anatomy is that in your little picture?
So, it looks like we are not going to get any replacments for Cesc and Na$ri at all then? Just as well we bought two new defenders, as I think they are going to busy.
Martin Keown on Football Focus Special: “I think a lot of enquires will have been made early for the big players, they don’t go into these things lightly. It’s interesting; it’s the clubs who got hammered at the weekend who are making big changes. Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp will make a change, he’s not happy with the squad, and it will have a different complexion by the end of the day.”
I would call that panic buying
Born and bred in Islington .eie
Hi MickyDidIt89. Many people think it’s my oversize belly. In fact it’s my right shoulder blade. I can confirm though, my belly is in fact that large, unfortunately. LOL
No worries about asking, I,m of the age that you don,t worry too much about Micky taking, instead it’s best to just have a laugh.
It is his bollock Micky 😛
Actually what would please me the most is to see a a lot more green on rasp’s league table (or perhaps hide it for a while)
TotalArsenal….Cheeky monkey. LMAO
VCC,
Oh praise the lord. All this time, whenever confronted by it, I have thought the worst.
I don’t believe the Arteta deal was ever on in the same that the signing of Cahill was never serious.
Vcc I thought it was your head
London. Who knows, but I think AW identified a player who would have added to the team for a couple of season’s until our kids get stronger.
I agree about Cahill, I think Per was his primary target
What happens when you mix a german,a pole, a chec, a russian, a dutchman a belgian,a spaniard,a korean,a brazilian,an israeli a few french speaking africans , loads of garlic and the odd brit . answer= ?
Oh Jeepers,
If we don’t find a playmaker, our system simply does not function. RvP will be rightly cheesed off and to my mind, we are buggered. I am not watching Europa League.
Still can’t wait for a meet up at the Swansea game though.
You should have asked earlier MickyDidIt, I,m not shy
VCC 😛 It is without doubt the most Arsenal-loyal avatar on AA!
There are others on AA who have AFC tattoos aren’t there ?
An EPL winning team?
So how much have we spent this summer? How much of it was finalised after That game?
Would they sign Per M~longname and Santos if we drew at OT?
Did AW told them he is leaving OR did the board give AW bollocking?
I would like some answers; I know that we the fans can only speculate, but I guess that’s better than nothing
A Spanish holiday resort 😛
TA,
close 😉
My avatar is on my arm.
I don’t think Benayoun is a bad player, he is Hleb-like in how h draws players to himself, but he’s nothing more than a squad player.
Clearly I have no idea what is actually going on, but surely you pay over the odds if you need to. Supply and demand thing, and lets face it CL football is worth it, and Arteta have definately helped.
Laters.
yossi will do a job for us. I’d rather Arteta but he is definitely better than nothing
Wenger complained that the window should shut before the end of the season and that way all the transfer business would be done and he could focus on preparing his team.
Had the window closed earlier surely it is reasonable to think that we would have done the same business allowing us to have beaten manu on Sunday rather than drawing?
TotalArsenal 7:54 ..Many thanks, that’s a nice thing to say.

No really big names signed so far, neither in the EPL or abroad.
Evening all- as we were last night eh? Anyone watching Ssn? The reporter at the grove seems to know very little- even called our new defender per mertestrasse!
I guess when money really is no object there is no disadvantage in signing Hargreaves, but what happened to the restrictions on the squad size?
Kelsey – 😆
Evonne – His son “played” for Udinese, once 😆 under Daddy’s orders apparently http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Saadi_al-Gaddafi

here’s mine
Irish, she sounds like the signing we are craving for 🙂
Irish
She works with a hairdresser called Charlie le mindu sometimes. I’d love to make some pieces for her. I really liked the telephone hair. I’m not a fan of her music though.
Hi Carlito
I’ve just got home and for the first time am watching SSN Deadline Day (never really been much point before). It’s hilarious isn’t it? Lots of histrionics about a “BIG evening at Stoke’s training ground” etc. And who are these fans who gather for the cameras??
TA – She’s only 5ft 1 1/2″ as well, perfect height for us.
GM – That’s awesome. I was going to get that design but plumped for the cannon, the PROPER cannon.
She’s absolutely eclipsed maddonna. Which can’t be bad 🙂
Irish, I reckon she is the only one who can get a full 100% out of Arshavin on the pitch.
Thanks Irish. I love it.
Hi 26- “to say things are HOTTING up is an understatement”! Let’s go to Glasgow where rangers have declined a bid from Leicester for their striker! 😆
GM – I do love her music, and listen to it a lot but her lyrics are not meaningful to be honest. There is just something about her, I can’t really explain it, but she makes me happy as anything cos she is so much fun, and brightens up this often dull world.
Like, at the VMAs the other night, all the other ones like Katy Perry did a load of costume changes to try and out gaga, Gaga, and she turns up dressed as a man in trousers and a plain t-shirt and doesn’t change all night. She still out did them 😆
BR- Forlan to Inter has to be a big name signing no?
The meat dress was brilliant too. Not if you’re a veggie but I’m not so fuck it. 🙂
I am still feeling confident Arsenal will announce another signing tonight. The fat lady is still singing away in the background.
I reckon Arry might hijack that Fulham/ Newcastle striker from Costa Rica. He can’t help himself and will need someone if crouch leaves
We are being lied to regarding how much there is to spend. They have made millions again out of this summer.
Feel sick
I remember a West Ham supporter on talkshite calling yossi “that isrealian geezer” once
Carlito. Forgot that one and Eto’o and Cesc 😦 .
TA – She’s not a miracle worker 😆
Nice tattoos Irish and goonermichael. Irish ours are the same, I have 1886 at the bottom.
C11, Bryan Ruiz is a fine player – I would not mind him coming to us.
I don’t see much of a difference in quality between Arteta and Benayoun. Neither is top quality. I’m still hoping for something else, possibly in addition to Benayoun – didn’t someone say Wenger is in France right now?

Supported Arsenal since 1986. I’m sure you lot have seen worse Arsenal squad. I haven’t.
It isn’t good enough. Got in 70ish. Spend 40ish tops. Scandal.
yes he did. Scored 8-9 goals for them last season..not bad considering he was in his first season in the EPL and had jumped 2[?] levels. Im surprised. .. Unless edverton have a new striker they will sign now.
“Robbie Savage (radio) says Mertesacker ‘didnt impress him’ at Real Madrid.”
😆 Oh my goodness, quote of the transfer window.
Nb52 to Sunderland? Maybe. Kaka to spurs?really? I will give up on this game if he signs for them- crrrrrraaaazy!
Maybe Arteta for Bendtner,, late swap?
Jamie, supporting Arsenal since 1986 and you think you’ve not seen a worse squad? Don’t make me list the various rebuttals to that one! We’ve had several squads way worse – just start with the George Graham one that finished 15th in the 1990s, not far off relegation.

Irish, funny that, I was going to haveVCC at the bottom of mine. great minds work alike.
That should be isn’t worse than this? sorry
TA- think Ruiz will be a hit in the premier league? Jamie- got to agree that if we make a profit in this window feels out of order!
C11, yes I think he will. Dutch media have confirmed he has signed for Fulham.
Neaman – SSN have corrected it, and he is gone.
If Spurs get Kaka instead of us I will scream

Just been told by @saifpr top agent Saif Ruby that manchester city have offered £100 million + Balotelli for Messi Barca considering it now!

Redknapp adds that Seb Bassong’s potential move to QPR is off because of the Cahill deal falling through #ssn #deadlineday
Just as we shouldn’t be afraid to spend big, we shouldn’t be worried about net profits. It’s quality in the important areas that matters and if Wenger’s right about anything, it’s that price and quality don’t automatically go together – Wiltord was more expensive than Henry, Bergkamp, Pires and Ljunberg. And Gervinho looks top notch despite being half the price of Jordan Henderson.
Let’s see how it all plays out.
Just seen Arry asked excitedly if he was about to sign Kaka – no, and when asked if there was a big one that he nearly signed, the response was “Yes, we tried to get Cahill”. Kaka to Cahill!

see Red arse i can also do that but I don’t understand a word 😉
Mid 90s squad you mean the one with Adams, Merson, Wright, Seaman, Dixon, Winterburn, Bould. If we have a couple of players of that quality and experience in this squad I would be surprised. They had a very bad season and I remember it well.
But I still think this lot are worse. My opinion and I might be wrong.
My prediction;
This squad wont finish above 6th.
They will win nothing.
Unfortunately the manager, who has been a legend will not be here by the time we kick off next year.
Kroenke will sell to Usmanov.
I don’t want any of that to happen but I think it will.
The first thing any agent who is trying to get a deal for his client says is Arsenal are interested; Sky, who don’t care if it is true or not, are happy to perpetuate the story and before you know it Arsenal are cheap skates for not paying the true value which was decided by his agent.
I don’t believe Arsenal were ever interested in Arteta or Beayoun.
but it won’t stop many Arsenal supporters from slagging off the management for not signing them.
Cahill must be one peed off man. Had the chance to double his wages and leave the frozen North (sorry Wigan). Instead he will run down his contract and leave for free in summer.
I cannot understand Bolton’s logic on this one or is it Cahill’s greed and he would not accept TTFC’s wage offer?
What is happening with Yann M’Vila FFS?
VCC
How is Rednapp a top manager?
Have we ever had an Israeli player? I can’t think of one.
he is a top wheeler deeeeeler
We’ve never had a jewish one either.
I tried to ignore VCC’s comment – you couldn’t London 🙂
Franny Jaffa 😉
Danny, I am sure that cannot be true, what about Eddie McGoldstein or Tony Adamski or Levi Dixon?
Arteta is back on. Fuck off yossi 🙂
Sky sports admit that Arsenal never had any interest in sigining Arteta and would like to apologise to all Arsenal supporters for misleading them.
Yeah right, like that is going to happen.
Sky sports understands that Arsenal have withdrawn their interest in Arteta.
What a bunch of lying toe rags.
100 minutes to go to decide if we’re gonna be good enough to win the quadruple…..
Big Raddy – there is a reason for that 😉

Arteta deal back on
Jamie
I think you are wrong. I think we will get 4th minimum even if we don’t get a midfielder. I think our defence is going to be the bollocks.
JackWilshere Jack Wilshere
ARTETA back on! Come on you Gooners!
Someone wants Arteta at the club.
Kelsey the hebrew was very funny. I’ve got a facebook friend who’s name is in hebrew so I’ve got no idea what his name is.
some of us are going to look pretty silly in a couple of hours thanks largely to the media.
@BR agreed !! I’ve heard Arsenal offered £10m and have refused to go higher, apparently Bolton wanted £13m and are refusing to budge and the spuds offered £11m either way Bolton have been complete amateurs in how they have conducted themselves
And there is no way Spurs turned down 40m for Modric, no way at all. Mr Redknapp is and has been a fantasist.
Okay, so they are saying Everton and Arsenal have agreed a fee but Arteta’s agents pulled out over wages. Arsenal said “Grand so on your bike lads.” It looked dead, but Arteta wants CL football and his agents are like “Okay, we might accept your offer, lets sit down again.”
Levi Dixon, he of the reggee reggee sauce on dragons den 😉
Arteta would be——————- A Treat
Is Arteta really any good? I’ve never payed much attention to Everton.
Should we get 400 more hits between now and midnight August will have been the busiest month ever in AA history.
Must be the quality of posts and comments.
Gooner Michael. Resect your opinion mate as ever. Really don’t rate this squad but you could be right if all the players Wener has bought come good in the first year.
Wilshere needs to stay fit. Note Wilshere on twitter badly wants Arteta.
Irish
Is that what they are saying on Sky or are you making it up?
Actually I should have written: payed no attention since Alan Ball joined us.
Arteta back in talks………
Jamie, mate have another look at the squads from early 90’s and this one and you seriously misjudging that comment mate, just saying……..
This squad without Arteta will get 4th, with could push on further….
Wenger has addressed some issues and got rid of some deadwood.
Just would love another striker as well, as C29 is shot through…….
we may bre getting both of them. they can take turns in the sick bay.
“BREAKING NEWS: Roberto Mancini has announced a new face will arrive at Eastlands today… Lescott and Tevez are fighting over who gets it…”
😆
JW absolutely loves the Arsenal. It is great to see such passion.
Not sure about the quality BR 🙂 but never mind feel the width.
Irish that’s old. But funny. They’ve both got plenty of mars bars
Steady GM
It looks like Arteta PLUS Benayoun on loan.
Arteta isn’t Cesc but he knows how to run a game. Wilshere and Ramsey could use anolder head. Consistent and good delivery at set pieces. That wouldnt go a miss.
I reckon we’ll get Arteta.
skybet were offering 4/1 against arteta joining us half an hour ago,now taken it off the screen.
I think Arteta would be a great signing for us, and where did him come from formatively?..Barcelona
Danny. That was an exciting day. Ball’s fee which broke the English transfer record is less than some players earn a week today!
London – Its all from official twitter accounts, Journos, Sky, BBC etc., they are saying Arteta is pushing the deal through. Wants to join us.
Is that true Wonderman?
GM – an oldie but a goodie 😆
Jack is still a fan.
Sky Sports confirms that Elvis has been sighted at The Emirates.
I remember my Dad walking around the house in shock when we signed Alan Ball. That was a very, very big deal for the club, something on a par with Bergkamp I would suspect.
So you lot all reckon this Arteta. Ok let’s see then….but if he’s so good why haven’t Man.U, Chelski or Man.C bought him?
It appears Arteta is on…..for me I can only see it as a positive. Good PL experience and a consistently good performer. Looking forward to seeing him in the red and white of Arsenal.

London,
I need clarification, what is your latest position;
— “I don’t believe Arsenal were ever interested in Arteta or Beayoun.
but it won’t stop many Arsenal supporters from slagging off the management for not signing them.”
or ;
— “Sky sports admit that Arsenal never had any interest in sigining Arteta and would like to apologise to all Arsenal supporters for misleading them.
Sky sports understands that Arsenal have withdrawn their interest in Arteta.
What a bunch of lying toe rags.”
Of course it is the BBC who first announced that the deal had been restarted after Arteta said he wanted to leave.
Conspiracy? 🙂
London….yes it is , he started as a trainee, but didnt make it , he was then loaned to PSG I think
Danny are you serious? You can say that about almost every player we’ve ever bought except silvestre and gallas
Big Raddy
If I remember correctly it was Dec.’71 for 220,000 quid? ….too bad he never won anything with us but he was great.
Danny 9:30 …apparently Arteta lies 5th in the assisst list in the past 5 years. ??????
Danny – I fucking hate when people say bollocks like that. Sure RvP is world class, why isn’t he at Man Utd? Cesc was the best in the league for a season or two, why didn’t Citeh snap him up as a four year old?
Fucking annoying talk gets my wick. Shane Long is far better than WBA but no-one snapped him up. This isn’t actually the Playstation, its real life, and in real life, variants come into play.
You tell him Irish!! 🙂 🙂
And don’t hold back next time! 🙂
Irishgunner
I was just asking coz I don’t know who he is. Sorry if I annoyed you.
This must be the busiest TW for us for a while. It’s the first I’ve ever actually enjoyed.
Mertesacker is our new number 4
Danny. Those white boots. I went out and bought a pair – I was still crap though
GM. It is the first I have bothered with. Seems like fun to me ….
You don’t know Arteta? You don’t remember Cesc getting him sent off?
I had red like Charlie! I was good at lying down…
Danny – Ah okay, sorry, I was just too used to perusing another site I fear. I do apologize, I just hate talk like “if he’s so good, why doesn’t X own him” – maybe we are just good enough, plus playing style comes into play.
Arteta is classy. Not the same grade as Cesc, a step below, but very intelligent and should work well with Jack if it goes through.
“Arteta to replace Cesc as the spainish player girls love. Benayoun to replace Nasri as the dirty looking lesbian. Arsene knows.”
😆
Guys, ye have to get on to Twitter.
I cannot think of a polite way to answer Danny’s question will someone else have a go.
I can’r get on the arse website.
I nearly pised myself then Irish
Hahahahah
I could not have done better than that.
The Arteta signing will fit in well with AW’s ‘grand design’. He is at an age where he can help Jack develop, but won’t be at the club long enough to stop the progress of the younger players in the next three years.
The loan of Bendy means he could still be a big deal for us next year if he makes progress with S’Land. AW still has hope for him I think.
I have to admit I have never laughed so loudly in my four years of blogging, that was hilarious, I’ve got tears runnign down my face.
gonnermichael
Yeah I remember that but I take no interest in 99% of the teams/players in the league – I only watch us. But if you ask me about teams/players from 1966-2006 – no problem. Maybe its a Highbury thing.
John Cross saying Benayoun is done
So the Mert is Cescs replacement – hes the new number 4!
If we got both Benny and Arteta I guess that would give us a few options….
Irish,
Who’s twit was that? 🙂

Is Bendy loan to Sunderland a done deal?
Irish, that was really funny.
John Cross from the Daily Mirror is a Gooner.
Mertesacker deal is now officially complete.

60 minutes to go…..
He’s a good player Danny. Not like Cesc but not many are.
RA
It’s a tweet. You’re not down with the kids are you?
The gooners behind the sky bloke are really ripping the piss out of him
Don’t hate me – I still want Sniejder… yes I live in a fantasy land!
RA – I know,he tweeted me saying “Up the Arsenal” when I started following him 🙂
Under the circumstances folks this is excellent business A Korean Captain, a Brazillian international, A German International and two experienced Premier League campaigners….no doubt there will still be those who are not satisfied
The penny has finally dropped.
Danny, you were being sincere about Arteta, wow I never saw that one.
If we get Arteta and he does well – do u think Barca will start mentioning his Barca DNA?
Sorry London, I was listening and reading and talking all at the same time, and gave you the answer that had nothing to do with what you asked. 🙂
The Bendy deal is almost done, but they are still finishing the financial details.
That tweet was just from some random Gooner, brilliant though 😆
Jaysus lads, Twitter is going so fast tonight, hard to keep up.
I thought that was wrong: Arteta isn’t Catalan he’s Basque FFS
The Benayoun has been finalised, says a twit or tweet (isn’t that what birds do) from the BBC journalist.
pat 😀
If its from the BBC it will be a twerp!
For the first time in a very long time I actually feel happy on the last day of the tw. I never thought I would be grateful to the Mancs for giving us a kicking.
“If these deals happen, Wenger will have signed Gervinho, Park, Santos, Mertesacker, Arteta & Benayoun for less than 40 mil “
It is going to be very tough anticipating the team for Swansea!
Arteta is Basque (from San Sebastian) but did start at Barca B.
And Benayoun started at Ajax.
Not sure how much any of that matters.
You can do it BR
It’s exciting though Raddy
Evening all, much happening 😀
Strange Twitcher isn’t a terrible manager for allowing his club not to meet the Cahill valuation, surely he should just get the deal done?
Twitter is hilarious on nights like this:
“Arteta isn’t good enough we shouldn’t sign him”
“Crap management can’t believe Arteta deal is off”
“Arteta deal back on …. Hooray ….. He is still not good enough”
Turns out Arteta wages are problem but on TalkShite they just said looks like Arsenal are now prepared to pay £10m….where are the scratchy head emoticons?
Bendtner to Sunderland on loan apparently.
I am stoked by your confidence (see GM I am down with the kids)
He might start pinning for Real Sociadad
Wenger is in France. Not having a pop but seems weird. Is there a sting in the tail.
Hope so Jamie.
OK, I’m now flying blind, my better half has now nabbed the remote, and the lunacy that is SSN has disappeared. I’m relying on you lot…..

Twitter Andre Santos:
@Arsenal Hello Gooners
Maybe he’s flat hunting. he’s rented his house in Totteridge out.
Now reports deal is off again.
Bellamy back to ‘pool is a strange one. Good player but past his best and the Scouse have so many front players.
All looking rosy for me, there still will be fans who moan, but arteta meets much of the criteria that fans have demanded……….
Experienced, Creative, Older, PL bedded in……..what more do you want?
Wenger has really strengthen his squad in quite stunning fashion, whether the Black Sunday played a part only he truly knows, i believe it has helped him make a few decisions and be bolder about them.
And with Yossi as well, it really adds some depth…….
He has some time now to get his squad ready for the start of our season…….
Arteta PL record = 0.236 Assists per game, 0.156 goals per game.
Cesc PL record = 0.377 Assists per game, 0.165 goals per game.
Yossi is 0.196 goals per PL game for Liverfool… dont have assist stats
Ok I’ve got it,
It’s a tweet, on twitter, but you are a twit if you tweet, and a Spud is a twat that twits on tweeter.
Nah, maybe I need to work on that!
Wasn’t it Arshavin who got signed 2 hours after the deadline?
Hi all

So potentially Arteta could do quite well with his ability and our strikers…
No, still on 🙄

BR – 😆 I won’t forget that day for a while. Massive Arshavin fan and had several heart attack like feelings before we signed him. Immediately bought a shirt with his name and number.
still better than Arteta – he is 0.243 assists per PL game and 0.268 goals per PL game over his Arsenal career… hes firing blank this season though….
OK, the truly deluded amongst us (meaning Pat and me) can now give up dreaming of Sneijder joining us but at least he’s not going to another English club either, as he’s staying at Inter – he’s just twiterated that “I respect all the Man Utd fans, who supported me the whole transfer window. Excellent pic Irish. He has a wonky mouth and a buggered nose. Perfect CB material!
Shock of the day for me …Bendy to Sunderland !!!
I’m kind of happy that its only a loan. Let him show what he can do as an out and out centre forward. How funny would it be if Bruce stuck him on the wing in his first game.
Or if at his unveiling Bruce starts talking about Niks versatility.
I’ve got a twitter account but I don’t know how to work it.
Redknapp and speed camera. Brilliant
What does Meireles think will happen now ……. they’ve just said the chavs want him

The late Meireles transfer request could just be a mechanism to bring into effect an agreement that the player would give up bonuses as a condition of a sale that has already been agreed.

NIk going to Sunderland on loan – he’ll get games there 🙂
GM,
Top Four really matters to me. After that, good football to watch and meeting mates.
I think our team spirit this season will be drastically improved. Very exciting times.
Guys understand the window, just because 11pm has hit, all clubs and players need to have done is agree there is intent between all parties, then they have about 4 hours to do formal paperwork and then can agree subject to medical which can be done tomorrow……
Meireles will go through…….to chelsea……..
Unoffical comments from afc sources all paperwork done for arteta.
Sorry for Cahill Peaches?
He wanted to come, Spyrs tried to Hoover up and he told them to stick it (Truth 🙂 ) he’ll cone on a free in summer ….. Maybe 😉
Very disappointed. I was expecting Snejder, Kaka, Benzema, Hazard, the German kid, Eriksen, Messi, Ronaldo, Rooney and Dani Alves.
Instead we have signed sub-standard journeymen who wouldn’t get a sniff at a Big Club. Once again Wenger (the muppet) has let us down. and once again the BoD have made a massive profit instead of signing proper players.
Worst squad in living memory …..
GM, over the moon, I am (in dutch-norfolk accent). Strength of depth at the back, experience throughout squad now, proper wingers, solid DM’s, a decent strike force, and a few creative midfielders – from supertalent JW to experienced decent quality players: TR, YB, and MA. The management has done us proud.
Arteta has signed for Arsenal!!!
Arteta now official 🙂
Yes I am happy but tinged with regret that Cesc wasn’t here to welcome the new additions.
The new gentler Raddy 🙂
I think that’s been a canny couple of days business for the club- I just feel sorry for big raddy trying to sort through all the ins and outs and injuries and suspensions to try and give us a line up in his next prematch! Yeah GM- I’m happy too! Retail therapy eh? Never understood it till now 😉
Hope you’ve got that right Harry, I’ve changed the widget for the last time this evening – nite all
thats surprising = Meireles to Chelski a step backward for LFC
Really happy with how today ended up. Got some workers in and some leaders.
Don’t no much about Santos or Park, but we’ll find out soon enough.

Personally I think Wenger has done some very good business for us, Squad has some very good depth now……….lets be positive and see where we get to……
Happy about the players we added but would have liked to see another striker. I really hope Chamack recovers his form after Ramadan or else I think we are weak still. Would rather we kept Nic and played him as a genuine centre forward. Top 4?? It will be touch and go between us and Liverpool.. dont see the spuds as a real contender.
Oh well got some good players in – look out Swansea.
Cahill must be gutted
GIE – Apparently Liverpool haven’t played a “non-white” player yet this season….>>>>>
Is that important? Stats like that annoy me.. {not being personal Irish] ..the team should be picked on the best players regardless of race or colour.
Hold on a sec, the arse.com website has just come back on, and no mention of Arteta yet…. Should we worry?
Wow, looking forward to the Swansea game even more now …….
Hopefully Mr 26may will have time to write a small post for tomorrow – pretty please xx
What happened to London tonight, maybe he fell asleep behind his sofa 🙂
No, he has sined 26th
*signed
Neaman – It was a continuation of what LadyArse was saying on Twitter 🙂
What’s our best XI now?
Szczesny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Santos, Song, Wilshere, Arteta, Gervinho, Arshavin, Van Persie
Bench: Fabianski, Koscielny, Djourou, Gibbs, Jenkinson, Frimpong, Ramsey, Benayoun, Chamberlain, Ryo Miyachi, Park, Chamakh, Rosicky, Walcott.
Sky have just got confirmation from Arsenal that Arteta has signed a 4 year deal
Did I miss something bvut Everton look weaker? Losing Arteta and Beckford…gaining….. who in attack?
1st day of Spring, & the signings are in 😎
Not a cloud in the sky, Arsene went buy, buy, buy, chamone!
GIE – Apparently Liverpool haven’t played a “non-white” player yet this season….>>>>>
doesnt matter if they are all green with purple stripes we will have to give them a hiding next time out
JackWilshere Jack Wilshere
I am off to bed a happy Gooner! Night my fellow Gooners! I am sure you will all sleep well tonight! Gym for me tomorrow! #AFC.
Everton is going down the toilet
Ah go on then peaches. No promises re quality though……
London just couldn’t take the pace…..
Irish, yes I know.. I was just thinking whoever tracks that sort of stuff should get a life. Nothing personal against anyone here.
I agree with the new first 11 except sub Chamack or Park for AA.
Everton have signed Drenthe from Real Madrid on loan and a young forward with a long name
I’d like to thank Manchester United for giving Arsene Wenger & The Arsenal Board such a wake up call before the transfer window closed. The sleeping giant is now awake 😆
And no doubt we will repay you later on with a big thankyou belting.
Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: “Everton have signed Argentine striker Denis Stracqualursi on season-long loan and Drenthe confirmation expected soon.”
There ye go
Neaman – Agreed. Unless its a conscious thing like Zenit, where there are just racist pigs.
Surprised they let Merieles go though, thought he was doing okay for them.
Arsenal have 100% confirmed Arteta…….
Drenthe is a good signing for Everton……
Chamron says:
August 31, 2011 at 10:20 pm Second, but I’m not happy at all, YB and MA to replace CF and SN what a fucking joke!
There you go Raddy
OK, all now there on arse.com: http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/arteta-joins-arsenal-on-a-four-year-deal
A 29 year old given a four year contract? How things have moved on.
I might have hoped for one player a notch above Arteta and Benayoun, but Chamron sounds like a right tit. These are now Arsenal players, so they get our support regardless, and anyway, most thought we would get one creative midfielder. I just hope Chamron doesn’t have a season ticket.
Nice picture 🙂
I am dumbfounded.
Just had a look at lg. wish I hadn’t now.
26M, I think we did try and get M’Vila, but he is young, inexperienced and not PL not what the fans ordered but wanted, go figure that???, but we were priced well out of it, I really think the boss has done brill………….
For me many over egged the lack of ability in our first 11, which we have well and truly strengthened now…….
Well more positive……….
Also the arteta signing has taken the spotlight off Benayoun, which now looks a good signing to add depth and PL experience…..
But hey ho there will still be fans that moan……….
Harry that is true.
Jack will be THE replacement of Cesc, but will need time to get to the very high level the Spaniard achieved, and now we have three players who can replace and help him, and that is what the doctor ordered. Less pressure on young Jack’s shoulders, with plenty of support, is the best condition for him to blossom.
Arteta is a big bit of business, like all the new signings apart from Benayoun. They will add depth. Still think we are a bit light in some areas but will bow to the greater experience of London, Gooner Micheal and Harry. Lets hope Mertesacker us a hit, could make a real difference.
Gervinho Van Persie Walcott
Arteta
Wilshere Song
Santos Vermarlen Mertesacker Sagna
Szchesny
Fabianski,Gibbs, Koscielny, Frimpong, Rosicky,Arshavin Park are decent cover. Need to be lucky with injuries though.
I haven’t got any experience. I’m just happy Jamie. i never expected snieder or a player of that class so I’m not dissapointed. I thought we were going to get 1 maybe 2 but we got 4
Jamie, are you tired? 🙂 You forgot Ramsey, Diaby, Ox, JD, Ryo and Chamakh. Or have you given up on all of these??
Agreed GM, I never expected Sneijder or similar, had hoped for M’vila, but he’ll come later I think maybe next window……
But lets think about what all the fans (and experts) were telling wenger…………
1. Lack height in Centre of defence.
2. Lack a commanding presence in defence.
3. Lack a quality back up at LB.
4. Lack creative ability in the centre of the park.
5. Lack players with good PL experience.
6. Lack Older players to lead youngsters.
7. Lack another goal scorer with something different.
8. Lack strength in depth in the squad.
9. Too much deadwood in squad.
10. Team lacked players with pace, aside from Walcott.
I think he has answered all of them points has he not?
If I was really greedy, I would have liked another striker, but maybe Afobe will take that slot, and I like him…..
I think the squad has real depth and a balance with plentiful options, competition for places will really keep players on their toes….
bye all I’m off to bed. see you later.
Come on you rip roaring reds, just love em……….
I agree Harry
Bed?
Its only 9.46am & the sun is shining. Spring/Summer its so footy for me 😎
On sober second thoughts my concern is Areteta and Bennayoun both have pretty bad injury records recently dont they? Hopefully both dont get injured at once.
Peaches and Rasp, I’ve mailed a post to you.
I agree with you Harry, both on your take on what was (to an extent, belatedly) been done in this transfer window and on the specific point re M’Vila – it does look like Wenger likes him, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes back for him in January. That’s assuming one of these copycat bastards doesn’t get in there first. You should repost your 12.36am tomorrow, you make good points that should be included in our discussions.
And Jamie, I agree with your take on our current best team.
Neamman, I think you’re right that Benayoun has had injury problems, but Arteta? Not sure he’s had too much to worry about.
TA – haha very tired forgot rambo! Think he will figure heavily but I think my 11 is how we will start when everyones fit.
As for the rest, I only counted players that are very good or reliable, and whilst all of those others have virtues I don’t think we can rely on them.
The youngsters among them might come through, fingers crossed.
Diaby has been missing give or take the odd game since september last year and Chamakh hasn’t had a shot since December. Good players mind.
I hope old Trafford was the last time I see Djourou in an Arsenal shirt but sadly not. Has had some great games but let’s us down.
Morning all.
i will comment on the transfer window once the new post goes up in detail but a couple of questions which those more knowledgable than i may be able to answer.
1) my understunding is that a player can be loaned out at any time after the transfer window shuts. Is that correct.
2) isn’t Arteta the guy who has broken several legs of various players or have I got that wrong ?
Comment of the night for me was Raddy’s comment about Almunia getting 50K a week
“Manuel? Must be tough going into training knowing you will never get a game and the picking up 50k a week. I know I couldn’t do it “
Nik B going to Sunderland is a two edged sword for Big Raddy.
Delighted that he is loaned and may yet have a future at THOF but filled with dismay at the prospect of every Sunderland game being shown on Danish TV!
Harry 12.36. Very good comment. Perhaps AW does read the blogs.
What great news to wake up to.
Cmon you Gunners.
Jenk, £1m – Gervinho, £10.5m – AOC, £12m – Park £1.8m – Andre Santos £6.2m – Mertesacker £8m – Arteta £10m = £49.5m
Torres, £50m
Perhaps with the profit made over the summer the board can refund the season ticket price increase? 🙂
Thought I’d give it a shot if it’s true that they do read the blogs!
kelsey. Ia sked the same loan question. and was told that it is only under extreme conditions that a loan is allowed mid-season e.g. 3 GK’s in the squad injured.
Arteta doesn’t seem that sort of player, but I haven’t studied his play.
chas. Why not write to AFC and ask?
Morning all
Kelsey Loans between top tier clubs (La Liga, Serie A, EPL) have to be done in TW I believe, hence need for special permission like City got. Free Agents can be acquired whenever. And loans to Championship etc.
Not sure about Arteta breaking legs, not from memory if he has I doubt there was any real intent or it was as a result of how he plays the game. If anything I fear we will need to prepare ourselves for “Same old Arsenal always cheating” as he has always liked a tumble followed by triple pike to finish.
Morning all,
In the brief 5 mins I have this morning I would like to say well done to Arsene Wenger. He has brought in proven, experienced players to bolster a squad shorn of experience.
I wonder whether we might yet hear of another signing that sneaked the deadline? Like Arshavin did remember? He didnt get announced til the following day…
Either way, very exciting!!!
WG
BR, because I could write the reply I would receive myself.
Well this transfer window has taught me one thing – Arsene Wenger does not tell the press which players he is looking at! I think 95% of transfer speculation regarding Arsenal has proved to be incorrect. Indeed, of those signed I think only Arteta and Mertesecker have ever been mentioned in dispatches prior to signing.
Must say though, not particularly enthused, but I wasn’t when Vieira signed. Will get behind the boys when it all gets started again though.
Come on you rip roaring, goal scoring Gunners!!
I only asked as Yogi on ACLF said it was possible in reply to the same question, and he is very knowledgable.
Arsenal has confirmed they have agreed terms with Werder Bremen to sign German international defender Per Mertesacker.
At 26, the 6ft 6in centre-back has significant experience at both club and international level.
Mertesacker has enjoyed eight seasons in the German top flight – five with Werder Bremen and three with Hannover 96 – making 221 league appearances in total and finding the net on 19 occasions.
The former Werder Bremen captain also played 53 times in Europe for the Green-Whites, including the 2009 Europa League Final.
In 75 games for Germany, Mertesacker has helped his country to the Semi-Finals of the 2006 and 2010 World Cups and to the Final of the 2008 European Championship.
To me that is a class signing.
@GiE
excellent point but…
Abramovich = £600million investment
Kroenke / Usmanov = £0 investment
Morning all happy gooners
kelsey – I complimented you yesterday and you ignored me 🙄
Chas @ 7:38 – ha ha ha 🙂 you are right, I sent several letters and received only one template reply from AW
But Illy whilst that continues to be the case we the fans could still buy the club back without having to worry about repaying debt as well.
Can somebody forecast our new formation? Are Arteta and Benayoun to replace Cesc and Nasri? How?
GiE – shall we 🙂 Oh, how nice that would be…We would bring Cesc back for starters. Keown second….
GiE – do you really think we’ll reverse the dealings of the last 3 years or so and buy back ownership? I can’t see it. I don’t know what the long term plans are of Kroenke and Usmanov but I can’t see them offering their shares to anyone. As soon as either did the other would buy them up and we’ll be in the same position as Chelsea…and I’m not entirely sure that would be a bad thing.
Morning Kelsey, 🙂
In answer to your question,
” 2) isn’t Arteta the guy who has broken several legs of various players or have I got that wrong ?”
No, you are not wrong.
I have it on good authority that he broke 3 legs of an unnamed Bolton midfield player, and 5 legs of that Greek centre half, Grigor Octopussy!
(My source tells me he also supplies you with info). 🙂
Is today’s post about our new squad ?
RA, don’t understand your last sentence. 🙂
Hi Illy, 🙂
The richest man in the country is Mittel who makes Abramovich look poverty stricken. He owns a minority shareholding in QPR, like Usmanov does at Arsenal.
The city Sheikhs have poured £1 billion into Citeh over the last 3 years, and no one is going to be able (or would want) to match that.
I know you are not keen on accountancy speak, but the whole point of shares, is that they limit the amount of the investment at risk in a company should it go bust. {Not accountancy speak – to be honest 🙂 }
Red Arse
with Christmas just around the corner I must remember to order this years octopus…the only way to ensure we all get a leg each
Kelsey,
Neither do I really. Please don’t break my 4 legs!! 🙂
Morning Red Arse
I must be sliding my feet under the AA kitchen table…I didn’t get a “there you again” opening gambit this time ;0)
Illy, 🙂
“there you go again” – must sloooooow down a bit
Illy ….. it was slightly tongue in cheek but I do believe the bubble has to burst some time for football, when that day comes who knows whether these guys will still want in. If they don’t we fans should be ready to act rather than trying to put together a consortium.
Morning RA
You know I share your view on the financial side of things at the club. Illy’s 7:54 typifies the misunderstanding that exists out there but I do not know how to answer this conclusively and I feel your 8.15 is not user friendly enough, meaning that even though I agree I still can’t quite grasp what you are saying. If an apples and oranges example springs to mind could you let me know because it would be really useful to be able to explain this to people like Illy and the many others who share this very common misconception.
I have just being looking at the NewsNow ‘top stories’ cloumn, and it just shows what absolute garbage 99% of those stories are in the cold light of day after the window closes.
And yet I still read them during the window trying to find news about our hoped for buys. I am a pillock for bothering!! 🙂
realistically – I can’t see us being too much of a threat to the Big 3 for the next 3 or 4 years with the financing the way it is. And if that turns out to be the case, will Arsene still be here after 9 or 10 years without a trophy? I doubt it. So I think something will have to change – don’t ask me what! Silent Stan may decide to cut and run, although that doesn’t appear to be his MO. In that case, Usmanov (who is a Gooner don’t forget!) might take over and decide enough’s enough. Who knows? Answers on a postcard please.
Hi London, 🙂
I will have a think about how to put it into ‘plain English’, because accountancy is a real turn off for most people.
Actually, GIE or Wonderman have a much more ‘user friendly’ style than me, so perhaps one of them might be a better bet. 🙂
Arteta
This signing is surely not viewed by Wenger as a long term solution but one that will take the pressure off of Ramsey and Wilshere this season.
Although, I must say that even when I try and find a way to explain it I am amazed that Wenger and the board agreed to pay 10 mil for a 29 year old.
RA
Is it possibe that the club could have had a Corporation Tax bill if they didn’t spend some of the profit in the club’s tax year? Maybe this could explian the price?
London – don’t you know who I am? Red Arse – tell him will you, while I get a 3 man team kitted up!
Illy
What makes you think that the Uzbek is an Arsenal supporter, there are far more reports suggesting that he followed United.
Illy,
Like you, I get frustrated about the way the oligarchs are screwing football over.
I am still hopeful, even as a confirmed cynic, that if commonsense is brought back into the UEFA rules, that Arsenal could be a major power again because we are financially very well set up, if the rules are strictly applied.
Realistically, that may well be a few years down the line – but we can live in hope.
Citeh, Chelsea and Manyoo are a disaster, financially, from an accountant’s point of view, if the usual critical ratio analyses were applied to their accounts.
Their player purchases are akin to someone giving me £10 million to do up my house, with not a care in the world for the simple fact I could never, ever repay him. Ludicrous.
Anyway, enough finances — I will be lynched! 🙂
Fair point – maybe I should re-phrase. He has been visiting the Arsenal stadium on match days for a number of years, prior to him purchasing the large amount of shares that he now owns. He doesn’t sing at matches, giving observers the impression that he may indeed be a Gooner…
RA
Much better, but we need to find a way past the idea:
Well they have got an Oligarch who spends without caring if he ever gets his money back why can’t we have one?
Said in a voice of if I don’t get my way I will squeem amd squeem.
Illy – you forget that there are many more sheiks who can buy the remaining EPL clubs, and few are considerably richer than Mosouri. What then??
If I had a chance of making zillions from an Uzbek team I would attend their matches and sing my heart out……………….but there would only ever be one team for me.
Red Arse, totally agree the current situation leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. I’m feeling like a Grandad that’s pining for the way things used to be…turning up on the day, fiver in hand, half hour earlier if it’s Spurs, 20p for a programme, peeeeeeeeeeeeeeanuts at half time washed down with a Bovril, getting chased home by the aforementioned Spurs fans, and watching the odd sliding tackle or two (that was at the match as well as on the way home).
Might just go back to grass roots soon – only a mile or so from Barnet’s ground nowadays. Actually, cancel that – once a Gooner, always a Gooner!
Illy
Only a mile away from Barnet’s ground……..I went to Ravenscroft School, do you know Barnet?
Evonne – I posted exactly that a couple of days ago! I said The Saudi Royal Family are a big firm.
I also posted the words to Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life, and metioned things could be worse (after the 8-2), Abramovich could have bought Spurs!
Morning all, we have an excellent new post coming up shortly courtesy of 26may
Jabba is a manc. Abramovitch is obsessed with winning the CL and the arabs are far richer than the oligarchs. Stan is a business man and sport is his business. The others are in energy and football is a toy that they play with.. I really don’t want to be owned by a manc supporting criminal.
I;;y
The Saudi royal family may not always be a big firm
Illy
One mile from Barnet’s ground could take you to Totteridge which was Peaches’ area, she is more highbrow than me.
Illy – that’s a terrible idea altogether!!! Spurs being richer than us…..brrrrrr
And we have a winner
GM
I do not expect anyone to improve on that explanation lol
Very sunny morning to you all,
I think the Arteta price simply represents supply and demand and the lack of options in the market for a playmaker. I cannot think of an alternative that would have cost less.
Citeh are becoming the most hated team in the country. Owen Hargreaves, what a Na$ri !! They paid his wages for 4 years until he is fit again, and now he fecked off to Citeh, bloody hell, that is REALLY bad
GM – someone said yesterday that Kreonke’s teams in US have not won anything since 2001. That would imply that his business is to make a small steady profit without taking too much risks
Illy. You are joining the North London Possee!
I went to Hendon County school.
evonne. It would seem so.
The real power behind Silent Stan is his missus.
Now, she and her family are seriously rich, (owners of Walmart and more) and probably lets Stan play at his sports business just to keep him out of her hair! 🙂
Women eh? 🙂
Morning all and what a fine morning it is………..Oh to be a gooner!!
Cannot wait for the Swansea match……
Now all moaning must stop and every single fan must give the boss the backing…………..
Evonne, regards Hargreaves, United let him go, fergie didnt want him……….
I went to the Middlesex Polytechnic in Hendon
Going back to something GIE touched on, I am amazed that Bolton did not sell Cahill.
They have quite a pile of debt, and I think they were trying to play hardball and getting the maximum amount for Cahill, which is fair enough.
When we dropped out of the ‘chase’ to buy him, that left Spurs as the only club interested and rather buggered up thier ploy of playing one against the other.
Rather than the £17m Bolton were holding out for, the Spuds bid £11m, and I was sure that Bolton, playing at brinkmanship, would accept that at the last minute.
I think they forgot to blink, and could get only a fraction of that money in January or nothing next Summer. V. strange!!
I’ve been a member of the North London possee all my life! First 32 years, Liverpool Road; last 16 New Barnet. Have to say though, I still read the Islington Gazette and not the Barnet Times – still doesn’t feel like ‘home’
RA. And after Gartside’s blast at AW, very funny 😀
New post …….
I can things ll be a little better 4 now

A motivating discussion is definitely worth comment.
There’s no doubt that that you ought to publish more on this subject
matter, it may not be a taboo matter but usually folks don’t discuss such issues.
To the next! Kind regards!!
