Season Review – Part II: The Bad…

Despite all the positives of the season, there are still some areas of improvement…

  1. Inability to perform when it matters. We had two dips in form when we shouldn’t have (not counting the start of the season)…Of course, the team is young but we did not have any European Cup or many Domestic Cup games…Seems at times that we just bottled it…
  2. Lack of cutting edge up front. We did create chances, especially Odegaard and Saka. Laca provided some assists but we did expect more goals. While our defensive performances still needs to improve, I believe that a more reliable goal scoring performance could have snatched a few points given the fact that we created good chances through our midfield and wingers.
  3. Our start of the season was catastrophic and did put us in a tough situation from the on-set with a mountain to climb.
  4. Our runs in Domestic Cups was poor. We should have reached, at least, the last 4 in both domestic cups given that we did not play European footie.
  5. Our inability to recruit during the Winter transfer window. Tottenham bought 2 players that made an instant contribution to the team and allowed them to have a great second half of the season…What if we had one forward or midfielder that joined us.
  6. Our recurring injuries to key players like Tierney and Partey.
  7. The lack of playing time for Lokonga and Tavares’ defensive and crossing woes (that will come also in the ugly)
  8. Finishing behind Spurs and missing out on Top 4.

I am sure there are others but here are the first ones. What are your thoughts?

    Mike M
    See final comment on “Good”!

  2. fred1266 says:

U wanted us to play Tavares more bur

  3. RC78 says:

Bellerin wants to leave AFC…and stay at Betis. Let him go at the right price. If we got 25-30 Mln for Bellerin, we would be OK…
    So long Hector!

  4. RC78 says:

Declan Rice wanted by Man Utd
Kalvin Philips targeted by Man City
Youri Tielemans also targeted by Arsenal

I d rather we go for Rice and Philips.

  5. fred1266 says:

I agree one thing I didn’t like about tieliman is after he announced he was signimg his performance drop drastically

Also find it rather unprofessional making such comments in the Middle of the season don’t think we need that type of toxicity

  6. fred1266 says:

Seeing your comment about elneny extension

From your opinion who u think better between elneny and torreira

My personal torreira hopefully he gets a chance if he wants to stay

  7. fred1266 says:

    Come on Nelson

  8. fred1266 says:

    Forgot AMN plays for Roma

  9. LBG says:

    Elneny AND Eddie!
Get the money, such as it is for Laca, Bellerin, Torreira, Mavrapanos, Nelson, AM-N, and anyone else not up to it, NOT, Saliba, Ballard IMO, or Balogun, and buy another right back, Bissouma and the best we can get as recognised, Premier League proven, big, goalscorer.

  10. fatgingergooner says:

If Eddie signs it will be a huge bonus for the club. Not only will it save us having to go out and pay a large fee for what would probably be a squad striker, it will also be one more Home Grown player in the team and someone who can start next season whilst the other new striker that we need gets upto speed. It could save us £20m-£30m which can be invested elsewhere. If he signs, and we get another striker in, then we are looking at Nketiah, Balogun, Martinelli, New CF as our forward options for next season. It obviously depends who we buy as to how strong that will look, but given that Laca and Auba have gone, I don’t think it’s too bad.

  11. RC78 says:

If Eddie stays, we have Eddie, Balo and Martinelli that could play CF. That said, we do need another striker. I think there is a case for players like Toney, Watkins, Abraham, Martinez, Unal, Simeone and Jesus.

If we get Toney or Watkins, I feel like we get players that can fit in the “Arteta” philosophy of hard working players. They are good at pressing and good in the air and they will get you double digit goals…They re no Haaland or Mbappe but they would help us.

  12. RC78 says:

    PSG
    – likely to secure O. Dembele’s services after he rejects Barcelona’s contract extension…;
    – keen on Tchouameni still although he has a deal with Real Madrid for 5 years
    – keen to keep Sarabia but sell Icardi

    Forwards at PSG next season:
    – Mbappe, Messi, Neymar
    – Dembele, Kalimuendo, Sarabia

  13. RC78 says:

AFC want to extend Saliba’s contract beyond 2024…

  14. RockyLives says:

    Another excellent analysis RC.

    Love the movie poster!

It’s hard to figure out what falls under ‘bad’ and what falls under ‘ugly’.

On the basis that it’s a matter of degree, I will add the vagaries of VAR to the BAD column.

We got shafted by VAR multiple times this season. Enough times that it might have made the difference between CL and non CL.

  15. RC78 says:

Fair point Rocky…The VAR was not great this season…

  16. LB says:

Champions League = No Eddie Nketiah
No Champions League = Eddie Nketiah

    Who would have guessed.

  17. RC78 says:

Diego Carlos – Boubakar Kamara – Coutinho join Aston Villa for less than 55 Mln EUR…good transfer window so far for Gerrard’s team…

  18. Mike M says:

Liverpool 21/22 = Arsenal 92/93. Double cup winners. Been there done that !!!
