Our previous heroes failed us today but we matched Liverpool for a good 50 mins…

What a player do we have in Martinelli! He literally ridiculed Trent-Arnold for about an hour! Saka was almost equally brilliant on the other side and Laca did his job decently too. Partey-Xhaka held for a good hour and then the game became tough and Odegaard struggled a bit to be decisive yesterday…same could be said of Ramsdale who could have avoided the first goal. White-Gabriel more or less did the job and Cedric-Tierney did relatively well too but there is no shame in admitting it was tough against the likes of Mane, Salah and Diaz…

We were definitely giving a good game to LFC until we conceded the first goal. We actually were the better team for large parts of the first 50 minutes. We were quite good box-to-box as Arteta indicated but we were not as effective in the boxes with an unusual error from Ramsdale and then an off-key Odegaard for the last pass…

But despite the losses to Man City and Liverpool, you can see that the team is growing. It still needs improvement – we can definitely get a better CM and also I am sure Tomyasu would have fared better than Cedric who did not do poorly but not great either.

So let us take that loss on the chin and focus on getting a result at Aston Villa…

Ramsdale: 4

Cedric: 5

White, Gabs: 6

Tierney: 6

Partey: 6

Xhaka:6

Ode: 5

Saka: 7

Martinelli: 8

Laca: 7

Arteta: 6.

COYG!

Ramsdale, White, ESR, Saka in the England line-up 🙂

Now, let us get D.Rice or K. Phillips to AFC and then we would have at least one player per line in the England squad:

    Ramsdale – White – K.Philips – Saka –

When it comes to the WC, I think ESR might not make the cut but for Ramsdale, White and Saka, I am quite confident.

  2. RC78 says:

Ramsdale – Tomy, White, Gabs, Tierney – Partey, PHILIPPS/RICE – Saka, Ode, Martinelli – Laca (or?)

    Tuerney – Soares, Holding, ?, Nuno – Lokonga, Xhaka – Pepe, ESR, Kostic/Raphinha (?) – Balogun/Nketiah (?)

Until we can match the other 3 clubs in the top 4 home and away, we’ll remain a potential, rather then a meritorious member of that elite. However we missed some great opportunities to take command when we had the chance and that is the only difference I could see between us and Pool yesterday. They finish their chances, we don’t. One gets the sense that we are headed in the right direction but AFC are notoriously feeble psychologically and we will clearly find out against Villa,Chelsea and Manure over the next few weeks.
I loved Arteta’s sarcasm about the scheduling fiasco from the EPL.

    Very harsh player ratings.

  5. Mike M says:

Somewhat agree about the harsh player ratings, although Liverpool’s would have been worse in the first half. Ramsdale is the tricky one for me. Strictly by the game basis (which is really what we’re looking at) 4 is probably right – he really “cost” us the game. But his overall confidence and distribution and command of his box makes the defence play better and his save from VDV in the first minute kept us in it. With the perspective of what he brings, Ramsdale almost starts with an 8 for me, so making an error means 4 could be a little harsh. I’d maybe up everyone one point and say we lost the game on a couple of individual errors that on another day would have gone our way.

  6. LB says:

    Salah, Marne, Firmino, Jota……………Lacazette.

We still have quite a way to go.

  7. RC78 says:

Clearly, we re still behind Liverpool in terms of individual brillance as well…almost in all positions…

  8. LB says:

“Almost in all positions” Not sure about almost all, a few perhaps, maybe I am splitting hairs.

  9. allezkev says:

Liverpool are clearly better than us at tactical fouling and Mane is masterful when it comes to simulation.

  10. fred1266 says:

Anyone one think qe should bring back the lacazette ESR saka combo

I know odegard really control the game but am sure he scores that goal odegard missed yesterday

  11. LB says:

Good idea Fred, but I doubt that will happen Saturday, if you look at the substitutions on Wednesday, they were all made with Villa in mind. Arteta had given up and was looking to try and keep Odegaard, Saka and Lacazette as fresh as he could.

  12. RC78 says:

    LB:
    Alisson – Ramsdale…tough but Alisson
    Trent-Tomy…no debate, Trent
Matip – White…toss up but Matip may edge it
    Van Dijk – Gabs…VD
Robertson – Tierney…toss up…but Andy would pbbly edge it
    Fabinho- Partey…Fab
    Thiago – Ode…Thiago
    Henderson – Xhaka…Hendo
    Salah – Saka…Salah
    Mane – Marti…Mane
    Firmino/Jota – Laca…Firmino or Jota

Saka and Martinelli would be subs at LFC…that says a lot

There is no shame in admitting it.

I think Mane is actually a very good footballer and not getting the credit deserves but also getting unfair stick for diving…he is not as bad as 90% of the other players to be honest playing in his position…

    As for the rating:
    – Ramsdale costs us the first goal and did not particularly shine afterwards so 6 – 2 (goal given) = 4
    – Ode did not create much and missed a good opportunity to put us ahead in this game 6-1 = 5
    – Cedric had a hard day at the office but all full backs do against Liverpool

For the rest, I think the ratings r rather fair, no?

Now we gotta beat Aston Villa…

  13. RC78 says:

    – Man Utd could land Ten Hag as their Head Coach as Tuchel is set to stay with Chelsea unless Chelsea is kicked out of the League…

    – PSG will sack Pochetinno and is looking at Zidane, Conte, Allegri, Jesus and even Galtier! But they should be looking at Gasperini
    – PSG is set to sack Leonardo as well for (i) his lack of results with Mbappe’s extension, (ii) his sacking of Tuchel, T. Silva and Cavani, (iii) his appointment of Pochetinno and (iv) the lack of engagement with PSG youth.

  14. RC78 says:

Two players to look at this summer from Frankfurt: Kostic and Ndicka. Ndicka is a young CB so it will depend on what we do with Mavro and Saliba but he is reliable. Kostic is a LWB – great engine, crossing and will be available at less than 15 Mln EUR – would provide great energy on the left wing and can play LB, WB, LDM and LW…

  15. pbarany says:

I have to say I feel you were a bit generous with our attackers’ rating RC. Awarding an 8 and two 7s for our front 3 with a 0.65 xG (of which 0.54 was the Odegaard shot that was somehow saved/diverted) might be a bit much for my taste. But I’m fine with the rest of the ratings.

  16. allezkev says:

Mane is also pretty good at throwing an elbow as Tierney discovered a season or two back, he is a spiteful, nasty player who is very adept at leaving his foot in, but he plays for the media darlings so usually gets a pass from our officials.
