David Ornstein on The Athletic on Deadline Day Kick-Off:

“Arsenal are not close to bringing anybody in. They looked to reinforce the striker position and were prepared to throw everything at Dusan Vlahovic, it would seem, but he never seemed to want to come. He wanted stay in Italy and continue breaking goalscoring records there, and he’s going to get that opportunity at Juventus.

“There were other players that Arsenal admired. Alexander Isak, who has been a target for quite some time and may continue to be heading into the summer, and Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin as well.

“Arsenal tried to do deal for Juventus midfielder Arthur and spent quite a lot of time on that, but it wasn’t possible in the end. Despite technical director Edu reaching some sort of agreement, the deal wasn’t sanctioned by the board.

“There is all this back and forth, exploring different avenues. I guess we cannot rule a late more, maybe a loan, but there will be frustration for Mikel Arteta. Clearly they would have liked to have done more in an ideal world, but that ideal world hasn’t materialised in January.”

Auba arrived in Barcelona – done deal

Auba’s gone 💔 Good luck to him; I hope he smashes it at Barca…
So grateful for everything he did for us!

Great news on Auba. Talented player who did well for us, but let’s remember he’s 33 and hasn’t done good things for the last 12 months. Getting his wages off the books and saving £25m is a master stroke really. Now we need to stop handing stupid contracts out to older players. Özil, Willian and Auba need to be the last of these stupid deals.

Everyone keeps asking if we have enough upfront, but the reality is that we’ve got to the current position without Auba. We are no worse off than the start of January. If not signing a striker now means we get the ones that we actually want in the summer, then I’d prefer that. The saved wages should help us get a better player in the summer.

Good business letting PEA go. Great player for us but as stated above, not for the last year or so. Boils down to this, we need goals, PEA (along with the rest of our strikers) wasn’t scoring any. Just got $250k off the books. We can still bring in players on loan right? Not sure if they have to be out of contract but anyway, we haven’t added any goals for sure, but haven’t lost many either. I’m still unsure of Arteta but I like his position on this. I hope it works out. A close knit team of very good players will probably do better than a fractured team with a couple of superstars. At least that’s my opinion for what it’s worth.

I can’t expect any good outcomes in any competition with Pochetinno as a head coach…He is a serial loser. Our team does not have any identity and we are over reliant on Verratti-Mbappe for any novement up front. Only good thing about yesterday’s loss was that Messi seemed physically better so there is hope that he will click at PSG in the next few weeks…We badly need him.

I do not think it is good business to let Auba on a free. If we had sold him, we would have gotten transfer money and saved the wages. Even if he went for 10 Mln, it would have been a better deal…

So we know our squad for the rest of the season:

Ramsdale – Tomy, White, Gabriel, Tierney – Partey, Xhaka – Saka, Ode, ESR – Laca

Leno – Cedric, Holding, +one Academy CB, Nuno – El Neny, Sambi, Patino – Pepe, Nketiah, Martinelli
