Arsenal’s Players of the Season: You Vote – Part 1 – Defence

Flashback to when Arsenal defenders were true giants

I don’t suppose any of us loved the Premier League season 2020/21, but now it’s gone, along with its empty stadiums, daft Euro Super League, terrible VAR decisions, crappy pre-Christmas Arsenal run and much more.

So now we can reflect on how our players did during the campaign and vote for our favourites in a series of polls here on Arsenal Arsenal.

Whether you’re a regular or just dropping in today you are welcome to vote for our Defensive, Midfield and Attacking Players of the Year as well as our Overall Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year and Most Improved Player.

Today we start with the Defensive Player of the Year (including goalies, although in practice that just means Leno, given that Runarsson and Ryan did not play enough games to be considered).

Tomorrow we’ll move on to Midfield, then the Attackers on Thursday.

On Friday we’ll vote for Overall Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year and Most Improved Player.

The results will be published on Saturday.

Feel free to debate the options in comments.

Enjoy….

Rob holding he doing well this season after longterm injured he get

  2. RockyLives says:

My suspicion is that KT will win this one because he is such a fan favourite, but in my opinion some of our other defenders have had good seasons, notably Chambers and Holding, with honourable mentions for Luiz, Mari and Gabriel.

Leno would be a contender if his recent form had been spread across the season, but he had a couple of very dodgy spells during the campaign.

  3. LBG says:

    Oyesola
So agree with you! Rob Holding must have rubbed up against Stevie Bould at the training centre, and Keown, when he has been depressing us all on BT!
He holds his head up, reads the forwards intentions in a methodical way, does take no sh** from those that choose to try to rough him up, has improved his forward ‘dynamic’ passing, and looks more and more like his blood runs Arsenal.

  4. Gooner4life says:

There seems to be a consensus going on here!!
KT is so good that he has just done what we hoped expected
Chambers Holding Gabriel and Marines have all risen to the challenge and deserve praise for their efforts
Just to be controversial what about Saliba and to a lesser extent Ballard who has and hopefully will excel in the playoffs at Wembley with Blackpool (the point being that with a a good central defensive pool of talent there should not be an emphasis on recruitment but attention to the addition of capable full backs right and left
UNLESS the legacy of Steve Bould throws up defensive gems from the academy ranks

  5. fred1266 says:

Can we please add emi to the list he deserves to be there

  6. fred1266 says:

Voted rob just because he played most games for us

  7. RockyLives says:

    Gooner4L
I agree – we look well set at CB for next season if we bring Saliba back. Holding/Saliba/(Chambers) as right sided CB and Gabriel/Mari as left sided.

I’m afraid I limited our Players of the Year vote to, um, players who had actually played for us this year.
Otherwise Martinez and Willock might be getting quite a few votes!

  8. RockyLives says:

    Fred
I voted KT, but if I had a second choice it would go to Big Rob.

  9. LBG says:

So another of those lauded and “expert” commentators, Ian Darke (Whooo?) names his worst Premier League 11 of the season. And three Arsenal players are in the eleven
No arguments for me on Willian, but ( and I am no fan) Hector Bellerin??? Worst in the League?
Lazy journalism! And as for Aubameyang!? Well, any other strikers not done the business consistently this season?
A cloud hangs over you Mr Darke or……put another way, you are a blithering idiot, and what’s worse, probably get paid for it!!

  10. RockyLives says:

    LBG
Fewer clicks if they choose players from the likes of Fulham and Sheffield Utd.

    Itโ€™s not journalism, itโ€™s trolling.

  11. JM says:

    Kieran Tierney

  12. fred1266 says:

But he is one of our own rocky surely we can make an exception

  13. fred1266 says:

Anyone vote KT is just bias cause he is most favorite, but he has been injured so much I find voting for him would be unfair

But then it arsenal players always injured lol

  14. fred1266 says:

  16. RockyLives says:

Saka is the only Arsenal player in the ‘provisional’ England squad for the Euros.

Not sure who else was in with a chance, but if I was Southgate I would have taken Smith Rowe.

  17. LBG says:

Glad Smith-Rowe has not been selected on this occasion and think Saka needs a rest, IMO.
A M-N is out of favour, presumably, or despite the reports, Garath doesnt visit West Brom games.
Dislike International football with a passion, in case not clear.

  18. LBG says:

And by the way, are White and Godfrey more worthy than Holding?

  19. RockyLives says:

I’m also glad that ESR has not been called up. Is there an Under 21s Euros that he’ll have to compete in? I hope not.

Holding has been better than several of the CBs picked (and is coming off a season where Arsenal have the third best defensive record in the EPL) but we are not seen as a glamorous team at the moment.

Fine by me. Stay home and stay fit Rob, and show them what you’re made of when we finish in the top four next season.

  20. Sue says:

Rocky.. England U21s failed to make it out of the group stage.. so no Euros for ESR!

Rumour has it Willian is keen on a return to the Chavs in the summer… can we please stop wasting our money (what little we have) on Chav rejects?! Sheesh!!

  21. RC78 says:

I think that when he played and was fit, Tierney was our stand out performer in defense. He played LCB and LB with great poise and purpose. Certainly the first name on the sheet when fit..

Now, there is the case that KT did not play enough to be considered as our best defender but he played in 32 games including 26 PL games (2300 mins) so for me, he played enough to be considered as our best defender this year.

I would put Holding as a close second.

  22. RC78 says:

As for the England squad, it would be a shame if Saka did not go to the EURO especially since it is a 26 players squad.

    Here are my 26:
    3 GK: Pickford, Ramsdale, Henderson

8 D: Tripper, Walker, Coady, Stones, Maguire, Mings, Shaw, Chilwell
8 M: Rice, Ward-Prowse, Henderson, Bellingham, Mount, Lingard, Grealish, Foden,

6 F: Sancho, Greenwood, Kane, Lewin, Sterling, Rashford, Saka (or Watkins)

    Best team for me:
Henderson – Trippier, Walker, Stones, Chilwell – Henderson, Rice, Grealish – Sancho, Hane, Foden

  23. RC78 says:

Most likely line up with Southgate:

Pickford – Walker, Maguire, Stones, Shaw – Henderson, Rice, Lingaard – Sancho, Kane, Grealish

  24. jjgsol says:

Excuse me for seeming so grumpy, but I cannot see how any of the players in the list deserve an accolade of any sort.

My vote is for Tony Adams.

Now that is a defender worthy fo accolades.

  25. RC78 says:

Touche, Mr. Jigsol…You may add Lauren, Campbell and A.Cole (the traitor) to the list…but grumps aside, who was the most reliable or least unreliable defender this season according to you?

  26. pbarany says:

I don’t want to interfere with Rocky’s concept, but KT will likely win this award ‘only’ because he was performing consistently on a high level.

It might have been more fair – and still free, if we don’t actually give away presents – to grant further awards like
    – biggest (positive) surprise of the season (my nominee is Chambers)
    – best defensive signing (I would go for Gabriel, but Mari and Soares were literally signed last summer)(
    – best compatibility (my man is Holding, as he did equally good with Luiz, Mari and Gabriel)
    – best young defender (should not be awarded this year, or could be given to Ballard/Saliba if loan players qualify)
    – defensive leadership award (not to keep Luiz without a prize)
    – biggest talent of the future (again Gabriel for me)

  27. RockyLives says:

Good ideas pbarany – but Iโ€™ve already written the next few days of โ€˜pollโ€™ Posts and Iโ€™m not changing them now ๐Ÿ˜€

  28. LBG says:

Willian for Chelski…..or anywhere else, please.

  29. RockyLives says:

    LBG

Trouble is, who would pay his ridiculously inflated wages after the season he’s just had?

There aren’t many mugs like us around the footballing world.

  30. LBG says:

Nearly choked on my tea with headline “”Martinez in talks with Spurs”. Even Fred would condemn him!

  31. LBG says:

    Americans hopefully, Rocky!

  32. LBG says:

Prefer Bissouma to Neves of Wolves for that holding role alongside Partey.

  33. LBG says:

Pottchetino eying a return to Spurs!!!๐Ÿ˜ฏ
    RC will be pleased.

  34. RC78 says:

If Pochetinno leaves PSG and we get Allegri, I would be over the moon.

  35. RC78 says:

I think I d like a player that can is more dynamic than Xhaka next to Partey, on defending and attacking phases…like Kimmich, Gundogan, Tielemans…

  36. RC78 says:

Hi Fred – I think Cavani will win. I hope for him that he does – he is such a great footballer and professional – PSG should be ashamed how they let him go and treated him at the end. Total disgrace.

My top 3 goals: Cavani, Pepe, Traore

  37. fred1266 says:

cavani should even be considered cause the goal was offside

  38. LBG says:

26th May. What a night to remember!

  39. RockyLives says:

    New Post

  40. fred1266 says:

Emi will never do such a thing

  41. fred1266 says:

People wouldn’t want willian in there backyard

  42. Maina Muigai says:

    Tierney has overdone many defenders
