The Deadwood Stage

Whip-crack-away!!  You have to be seriously old or a Doris Day fan  (in which case you are gay) to get that reference.

We are desperate for a clean out.

No CGI here …

We were under Mr Wenger and I thought we had sorted out the problems with the departure of Gibbo, Little Jack, Santi, Perez, Chuka, Ospina, Campbell and Per, plus another couple of loan. It appeared that UE’s squad was packed with pure quality. I was wrong, we still have players who are simply not good enough.

We can all write our lists and I guess many will differ but there are some names which will feature for everyone

Mustafi, Elneny, Lichtenstein, Jenkinson are the most popular candidates for the Spanish Archer.. Welbz and Ramsey are already gone as is Petr. That makes 7. I would add Mhki and Ozil (it is criminal to waste his talent). So, 9 out, a massive reduction of our squad.

Some may add Xhaka but I think he is an excellent squad player and back up to a proper midfield lynchpin.

It will not be easy to sell players with long contracts and very high wages. Why should they leave and take a pay cut? Will AFC pay a percentage of their wages to get shot?

Or should Mr. Emery  allow for natural wastage through age and contract run-downs  moulding the remaining players to his masterplan? Given our financial situation this seems the most likely route. We have some potentially excellent players coming through the ranks – Nelson, AMN (Cons), Smith Rowe (Lab), Willock m Mavropanos (Young Greek Bloke henceforth known as YGB) etc and it is important to highlight just how young some of our regular starters are – Curly is 19, Terrier 22, Hector 23, Iwobi 22, Holding 23. These are the chaps to build the squad around.

I always thought that Mr Wenger was too loyal to his players, keeping them in the squad when they were past their best. By doing so he did not bring fresh blood into the club. As with Mr Emery, “he can only pick from the players he has available – get rid of the deadwood and they cannot be picked” (Homer Simpson)

I think we need an aggressive clearance sale. Then buy a proper CB, 2 LB’s, RB an attacking MF and a winger. Is this likely? Sadly not.

Make mine a Sasparilla.

This is RC78’s comment from the last post which came just after the NEW POST call.

    RC78 says:

Transfer and contract mistakes in the past 3 years:

    1. Sanchez’s allowing to leave in January
    2. Non-recruitment of a true DM
    3. Ramsey’s non renewal
    4. Ozil’s contract
    5. Giroud’s sale to Chelsea
    6. Xhaka’s recruitment
    7. Mustafi’s recruitment
    8. Non-recruitments of full backs
    9. Non-recruitment of a top CB
    10. Oxlade to Liverpool

    – We could have had a value-added of 60 Mln from Sanchez’s sale
    – We could have invested this money in a very strong DM
    – Ramsey was to be a pillar of Emery’s team BUT the wage structure has lad to the worse situation ever, lettign Ramsey go. If you are a CEO, you secure Ramsey even on a big salary and then let…Ozil go to balance the books…If you want to keep Ozil and Mikhy, then you can sell Ramsey for 50 Mln…really poor management there
    – Ozil’s renewal was a mistake despite his incredible talent. Too much pressure on the wage and creating envy within the squad
    – We miss Giroud’s presence in the box, he was a great supersup and cup player and I think that he could have stayed as our 3rd striker and been useful
    – Xhaka’s recruitment was welcome (even I was happy) but it is fair to say that he has disappointed. We expected a Xabi Alonso type of a player but we got a very pale version of Xabi Alonso….
    – Mustafi – started well, then was very poor, started well this year but again back to his mistakes so a disappointing recruitment in the end
    – We were nto happy with Chambers and Jenks at RB and still we did not go in the market to get a FB that could really challenge Bellerin. Monreal shows that he is better at CB since last year so we would have needed another full-back in our squad too.
    – Sokratis, Holding, Mavropanos, Kos and Monreal are all OK but they are not Van Dijk, Koulibaly or even Bailly’s…We need a top CB and fast.
    – Oxlade is a quality player, was really annoyed to see him join the Scousers. In Emery’s system, he would have thrived. Imagine: Oxlade, TOrreira, Guendouzi…an energetic trio.

Anyways, this summer – we need to sell players to free up squad and wage space…This is the summer that will define Emery’s success/failure at our club.

    Thanks for the post, BR.

I’m a bit puzzled by where we are at as a Club these days and have no idea where we go from here.

I’m hoping Unai has a carefully constructed plan which will be fully supported by our silent owner.

    We shall see.

p.s. I’ve definitely got the hots for Doris Day as Calamity Jane

  3. Omar. Khadine says:

Denis Suarez is a lethargic mediocre player like Ozil without the Creative abilities of Ozil and if Ozil does not have the “High Work Rate” required by Emer, then WHY sign Denis Suarez ? Unai Emery simply has to let go of the his past emotional involvements at Sevilla and get on with the current job at AFC or he[Emery] will also get his P45.

Emery will have £45m (£60m from adidas deall less £15m in the red in the books) plus monies from sales in the transfer budget for the Summer 2019 window. With sales of El Neny, Mustafi, Jenkinson and Ozil, Emery may have another £40m making a total of £85m. Even without consdering ECL money shouldd Arsenal scrape in to 4th position of EPL, when there would be another £50m; Arsenal can use the £85m to bolster the squad efficiently.

Hakim Ziyech, Attacking Midfielder with high work rate and speedy, from Ajax but will cost around £40m. As Arsenal cannot sign Isco from Madrid, £70m, then next best is Hakim Ziyeck, who ticks all the boxes. Denis Zakaria, a pretty good upcoming 6ft 3ins Defensive Holding Midfielder from Borussia Moenchengladbach for around £15m.Then there is Yacine Brahimi from Porto on a FREE transfer, who is a speedy Winger with a High work rate, who also ticks all the boxes. Now Arsenal will have a Top End Attacking `midfielder and a nearly Top end Winger for around £40m. Emery will have £25m left to sign a Centre Back. This will really strengthen Arsenal in all areas for next season

  4. Drew says:

As per the rumours at the moment we have a £45m budget for this summer. On the face of it this sounds terrible but with some Financial Planning we could easily have a great summer…looking at players out of contract this summer we could get rid of Ramsey, Cech, Lichtsteiner, Welbeck, Monreal and Jenkinson which is a combined wage of 480k/week (c.£25m/year). Add on to this getting Ozil out (unfortunately I think the only way we offload without paying any of his wages is with no transfer fee) that’s an extra £350k/week (c£18m). Sales of players who are clearly not up to it in Mustafi and Elneny we could, conservatively, get £20m for both plus their wages (£145k/week) which is c.£27.5m.

    £25m + £27.5m + £18m + £45 (the rumoured amount) = £115.5m

Then look at those outgoing players and which positions we MUST replace we’re looking at GK, LB, RB, CB & CM (hopeful Reiss Nelson can do a job next year on the wing).

Wage wise we could be looking at:
    Backup GK – £50k/week
    Starting LB – £70k/week
    Backup RB – £50k/week
    Starting CB – £120k/week
    Starting/Rotational CM – £100k week
    Total wages – c£20.2m

That leaves us with around £95m in transfer fees for the above players to buy the above players. Given the full cost of buying players is paid in installments over the period of the players contract this is EASILY achievable with good planning. All that being said we are The Arsenal and we LOVE to make a mess out of it all…..

  5. LBG says:

    Hi BR
Resent gay implication. Doris could have got her gun for me anytime, as long as she didn’t sing.
Aggressive clearance sale, post using the youngsters in “Dick’s real idea for post AW playing style”, please, for me.

  6. RC78 says:

What a nice post to read, really enjoyed the topic and the writing style.

Here are the players leaving for sure: Cech, Ramsey, Wellbeck

Here are the players that I would like to see leave:
    -> Ospina, Martinez
-> Jenkinson, Chambers, Mustafi, Monreal (if Kos stays)
    -> El Neny
    -> Ozil, Mikhy
    -> Asano

There is a question mark on Mikhy but I like the bloke and he gets along well with Auba 🙂 Also question mark around Lichten

Cech, Ramsey, Wellbeck, Mustafi and Ozil would free up a lof space in our wage bills.

What we would need if all are sold:
    1. Back-up GK -> Lafont (Fiorentina), Lunyin (Leganes), Trapp (Fankfurt)
    2. Right-back -> Hakimi (Dortmund)
    3. Left back -> Gaya (Valencia)
    4. CB -> Gimenez, Marquinhos, Aldevereid, Akanji, Tah, Bailly
    5. DM -> Gueye, Allan, Doucoure, Herrera, Arranguiz
    6. CM -> A priori, we are keeping Suarez. If not, let us move for Rabiot.
    7. AM/FW/Winger -> Douglas Costa, Perisic, Willian
    8. ST -> Haller, Milik, Mitrovic

Leno – Bellerin, RECRUIT, Holding, Kola – Suarez, GUEYE, Torreira – Douglas Costa, Laca – Auba

Lunyin – HAKIMI, Sokratis, Kos, GAYA – AMN, Xhaka, Guendouzi – Reiss-Neillson, Iwobi – MITROVIC

    Hakimi – 25 Ml,
    Gaya – 25 Ml,
    Akanji – 40 Mln
    Gueye – 35 Mln
    D. Costa – 40 Mln
    Mitrovic – 30 Mln
    ——————————
    195 Mln

    – Expected sales revenue: 130 Mln
    ——————————–
Total cash injection needed = 65 Mln

We may need to do a loan for one of them with the option to pay later or do a swap deal – maybe Mikhy + cash = Akanki

  7. RC78 says:

Omar – Brahimi will be good especially for free but we also need to make space for Reiss-Neilsson in the squad….For 40 Mln, I d rather take Douglas Costa and I d rather take Gueye than Zakaria too just because Gueye is acquainted to the EPL already.

Building the future: Hakimi (20), Gaya (23), Akanji (23), Mitrovic (24)

Adding some experience: Douglas Costa (28), Gueye (29)

If we get these 6 players, our squad has quality, depth, youth and experience and we are setting up for the next 4-5 years…

All below 27 so you know you could resell at a decent value if needed:
Leno, Bellerin, Hakimi, Akanji, Holding, Kola, Gaye, Torreira, Guendouzi, AMN, Iwobi, R-N, Lacazette, Mitrovic

Let us see what Emery does but he needs a minimum of 6-7 players if he is going to offload the deadwood…

  8. RC78 says:

Some rumours have us linked with Pepe and Under for wingers. Pepe will be too expensive for us and Under may not cope well with EPL, he is already struggling in the Calcio…

Others have us linked with Calero, Chilwell for defenders.

Benega in midfield and Pavon upfront…

Except Chilwell, I wouldn’t even contemplate the rest

  9. Rasp says:

    Thanks for the post Raddy.

All I have are questions … no answers. We’d become used to IG’s syrupy PR management, but now there seems to be no one in charge of the business side of things … or at least who is happy to be the go-to spokesperson.

Why would the club want to dampen our enthusiasm for sexy new transfers in February? … it makes no sense, unless they want to get it out of the way so it will have died down by the time it comes to season ticket renewals.

We have no idea exactly who was responsible for the cock-ups that have put us in this situation. Perm any number from Dick Laws, Ivan Gazidis, Arsene Wenger … the tea lady.

I believe that we have to back the manager, if the club does not keep the promises made to him when he was offered the job, then he could walk away … and that would be about as helpful as a no deal Brexit.

I agree with the tone of the post. UE must be allowed to sell and let go’ the players who are not to the required standard in the hope it will raise sufficient funds for him to bring in the quality we need.

I can’t see any resolution to the Ozil problem. No team will pay him the rumoured £350k a week even if we let him go on a free, so I expect him to see out his contract .. he’s retired from International football so he doesn’t even have that incentive to get on the pitch.

  10. RC78 says:

Rasp – I think Ozil will be sold to Gala or Fenerbace or Inter Milan. -> He is wanted there, they can pay him close to what he wants. If Inter puts in a good offer, that would be his preferred destination as they are building up a good team.

I also agree that the club shoudl back Emery. This summer will be key to his tenure so I hope he gets the necessary political and financial backing from the club.

Emery wants players that will leave it all out on the pitch so expect some warriors to sign for us (except Suarez…lol).

  11. Rasp says:

Thanks RC, I hope you are right about Ozil, his wages would get us two warriors as you describe them.

I’m hearing conflicting stories about Suarez. Apparently he’s anything between a hopeless lightweight and DB10 … as with the manager, I’ll give him time. We know he was a player UE specifically wanted so it will give us an opportunity (in time) to judge just how sharp UE is at identifying players to fit in with his system.

  12. Rasp says:

The process may already have started if The Online Gooner have got their facts right …..

  13. Malaysian Gunner says:

Its not only the deadwood. I feel Emery is playing Wenger style ie pass and pass. Watch how Everton scored against Wolves.
Instead of passing the Blue shot suddenly and it was a goal.
That’s why Arsenal’s pass and pass with priority ball retention falls into the opposing defences’ hand.
And then a sudden sneak attack results in a goal conceded by the gunners.Chasing the equaliser the flood gates open and soon the gunners lose again.

  14. chas says:

Didn’t Wolves beat Everton 3-1 at Goodison?

  15. RC78 says:

Rasp – I watch Trossart. He is quite good but if we have Reiss-Neilsson, AMN, Iwobi as young wingers – why would we want another one of those?

I d have hoped AFC to go for a more finished product like Costa, Perisic, Willian, Brahimi…I mean, if you are going for young prospects, then go for Pepe and break the bank or go in between and get a player like Zaha.

Suarez is a fantastic ball handler and technician. He is actually quite good moving the ball up the field with pace and at dribbling but he does not have the engine required to play in the EPL. He is really classy on the ball but we already have Ramsey, Ozil and Miky who can do that so why get Suarez on loan…and he definitely does not have what it takes to be a winger in the EPL…and he does not have David Silva football brains or skills so he can’t play as a false winger either…

  16. fred1266 says:

Wow that was a long post

    Yesterday’s was definitely better lol

  17. GunnerN5 says:

Yet another post by Raddy – thank you.

I’m very apprehensive about the future prospects for Arsenal.

The lack of meaningful communication is very worrying, we do not have an articulate spokesman we can rely on to give us even a glimpse of the clubs intentions.

I feel like a spoiled child who is missing what I used to have and wonder if I will ever get it back again.

  18. RC78 says:

    Gunner5 – I hear you….

I am also quite annoyed at Minslat leaving to be honest…

  19. fred1266 says:

Fred. Sorry the post is so long. GN5 tomorrow and then a very short pre-match on Saturday – I will try to be brief.

  22. RC78 says:

BR – I enjoyed the post and its length coz it was really interesting…

  23. chas says:

I’m doing a microscopic post for Friday.
Working title “Fred – Miracle or Mirage?”.

(as usual BR manages to lose a day in his excitement to get to game day and his 54 thousandth pre-match)

  24. LBG says:

Trossard of Genk……Dick’s new, “I want you”!
Better than a kick in the Trossacks!

  25. LB says:

OK I think I have it.

The club are bad for letting Sanchez go the way they did rather than tying him up to a longer contract which would have enabled the club to sell him for something in the region of “60 mil” at a later time?

And — the club are bad for tying Ozil up on a longer contract rather than letting him run it down enabling him to leave for free?

    Sometimes I want to scream………….

  26. Big Raddy says:

Oh … it’s Weds not Thurs (embarassed smiley)

Almost anything is better than a kick in the Trossocks

  27. Big Raddy says:

LB. Don’t let a Daily Mail article frustrate you – it is their intention. A repulsive rag which my parents subscribed to – they used to call me a Lily-Livered Guardian reader because I held libertarian views 😀

  28. RA says:

A very interesting Post, BR, thank you.

Not that I have anything against old people, or gay people, or those who are both, but I have no idea about the origin of your whip cracking, but was Ms Day into sado-masochistic machinations by any chance?

    As I said — interesting. 🥺

  29. chas says:

This made me laugh from yesterday

Have you switched yours off somehow?

    Here’s a screenprint of mine

More Doris for anyone that’s interested.

  40. chas says:

Have you tried changing the setting or unfollowing the blog and then re-following it?

  41. chas says:

Surely you don’t want a new email each time a comment is posted?

  42. TotalArsenal says:

Is there really that much deadwood or should we be disappointed about Unai’s inability to bring the wood to life in the first place? Which player under Emery has actually looked better since his arrival? Iwobi and Bels you could say but then they would have progressed anyway this season. Sure there are a few who need to move on but the ‘clear out and buy new before the Manager can be judged approach’ does not wash with me.

  43. LB says:

    Small point

I was referring to comments above not a newspaper article.

  44. fred1266 says:

  45. Big Raddy says:

    Morning All,

    TA. Improvements under UE?

Lacazette, Holding, Bellerin, Iwobi, Kolasinac. And I would say though with certain reservations, Xhaka.

Almost half the first team which must be considered a success.

Right … now for a bus or a slider

Briefly again this am, but had to thank Erik for his long read 🙂

How the heck did Chas deduce that a Fred lol at 6:35 pm was in response to an RC comment at 2:43?

Fred’s curious responding technique is beginning to rival the much celebrated Eddie “cat shat on my letter r keyboard button” era

  51. chas says:

  55. mickydidit89 says:

    Chas

Oh I see. I’m sure I’ll find that useful 🙂

Seriously, so that explains the Fred time capsule thing, but if he/one is the only person in the world to use such a feature, then stuff will go wrong

  56. chas says:

Fred’s writing a post about how he built a flux capacitor and travelled back in time to see Arsenal lift the Champions League trophy in 2006.

Apparently Henry was on blistering form, scored a brace of one-on-ones and despite Barcelona’s late two goal comeback, Arsenal held on to win 3-2 with 10 men.
