Suddenly the FA Cup is Worth Winning?

2014

So, Arsenal FC win the FA Cup in 2014 and finish 4th in the League.

Arsenal fans …………. No-one’s happy as we didn’t beat anyone decent on the way to Wembley – only the spuds, Liverpool and Everton – yeah, but they were all at home. Fourth placed trophy again – we should be finishing above City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

2015

Then we win it the following year, crushing Villa and also come 3rd in the Prem.

Arsenal fans …………. Not good enough – still didn’t beat anyone any good on the way to the Final – only Man Utd at the Old Cowshed and a few other sh*te teams. Fancy comin 3rd to the chavs and blue mancs, why do we always finish behind them?

2016

No cup but a 2nd place finish, ♫ It’s happened again ♬

Arsenal fans …………. We only finished second thanks to the spuds spursing it up by coming 3rd in a two-horse race. We should have won the league and only came second because the spuds are bigger bottlers than us.

2017

Arsenal finish outside the top 4 for the first time in 20 years but manage to win the FA Cup for the third time in 4 years beating Abu Dhabi FC and the Fulham Oilers in the Final.

Arsenal fans …………. Tinpot trophy again – why can’t we win the League or the CL? Sack the board, sack the manager and get rid of most of the players. Spurs finishing above Arsenal for the first time in 22 seasons – that’s the final straw.

2018

This season Spurs, Man U and Chelsea all went out in the CL Round of 16 and all three are clinging on to the hope of an FA Cup win to save their season. At least two of them will finish potless this season (hopefully all three, cmon Soton! 🙂 ). Then again, probably 2 of them will have a 4th place trophy as well for consolation.

Arsenal fans………..Wish we were still in the FA Cup and had a shot at the CL, other than via the Europa.

Do we need some perspective?

Well written. Arsenal fans are a bunch of nutter. They do not know what they want. We played Milan at the Emirates, although Milan was loosing, it supporters were loud singing right to the last minute. Dear fans we need to get behind our players in times of happiness and sickness. That’s how true fans behave.

  2. Eddie says:

feck FA cup, winning in Europe would be brilliant.

I guess completely unintentionally you demonstrated the downward trend. We, the less deluded fans, have to be happy with less and less each season.

  3. Eddie says:

chris – Arsenal fans DO KNOW what they want. You is a bunch of nutter whatever it means.

Let me make it clear to you. We want:
1 A double – CL and EPL cups
    2 Just CL or EPL
3 We want to play on Thursdays
    4 We want Ollie back
5 We no longer care about micky mouse cups.

This season we want to win in Europe.
And we don’t want to pay £5 extra for cheese and buiscuits in the Dial Square

    Got it?

  4. RA says:

Missed GN5s reissued Post yesterday, still very well done and like all Arsenal historical data intensely interesting. Thank you.

  5. optimist hablia says:

Perfect, no one captures it better. You never appreciate the value of what you have until you lose it. Arsenal fans reaping the fruit of ingatitude they have sown over the years.

  6. RA says:

    Good Morning, all.

Chas, I detected a dash of tongue in cheek sarcasm in today’s Post, and it is no surprise given the sometimes ridiculous assertion “we are the Arsenal, and we should always win either the EPL or the CL” .

OK, That may be an exaggeration of what actually is said — but many fans do have an unrealistic expectation – and in my experience makes other clubs’ fans dislike the ‘arrogance’ of some Arsenal fans.

  7. Rasp says:

    Morning all, thanks chas.

Yes, the hypocrisy by other teams and their supporters in relation to the importance of the FA Cup is palpable. Clearly finishing in the top 4 is very important, financially and in terms of the profile of the club. I’m happy if those who employ sarcasm want to call it ‘a trophy’ … it’s certainly an important achievement.

On the wider question; sport can only ever be competitive. Football is as competitive as it gets. The thirst for victory is what drives us all. We want to score goals, we want to win games and collect trophies. We are very fortunate to support a club that has a rich history of doing just that.

If our players don’t want to win everything then we are in trouble … so what’s wrong with the supporters wanting the team to win? … nothing.

The way in which some supporters (the vocal minority) express their displeasure is the main problem. I’m pretty sure that in a poll of supporters, the majority would now vote in favour of a change at the top because the perception is that Arsene’s incredible time is coming to an end ….I don’t see that as a lack of loyalty or being spoilt … just an acceptance of what comes to us all eventually.

  8. Rasp says:

Will manu equal our record if they win the FA Cup this season? I can’t see any manager beating Arsene’s record of 7 wins.

    Rasper.

I have cut back on my visits to other blog sites because pointing out the ‘bleeding obvious’ that only 1 team can win each trophy, each year, and finishing 2nd, 3rd or 4th is not a disgrace, it is actually a worthy effort and many other issues figure in that – luck, money, player contracts, extended injuries all play their part in that tends to be like a red rag to a load of bullocks — or is that bollocks?

That view is quite often greeted with variations such as – it’s people like you who swallow the club’s b/s; you are just as deluded as Wenger; etc, etc —

I used to try and explain why I hold my views — as I am sure you know — but it did not take time to realise that it is not my job to try and reason with those who do not wish to listen — so I walk away — mostly! 😀

Hope you and the fish are keeping well.

  11. Rasp says:

Hi Redders. Rocky recently came on and explained that apart from the fact that he is extremely busy in his career, he had found that like many of us, he’d become tired of repeating the same things over and over … it’s boring.

I do wonder at the self importance of those who think their opinion will change anything … but equally, I personally feel the need to try to understand the causes when things are not going well.

It’s not Arsene’s fault, or the Board’s fault that all this coincides with the emergence of billionaire owners and an explosion in social media that tells more lies than truths. It makes it harder to be an old fashioned on-the-terraces supporter … there is no escaping the tidal wave of opinion and information overload.

  12. RA says:

    Very true, Rasp.

Rock Island Red and I have spoken recently too, and unsurprisingly his views are shared by many, I suspect, and certainly that has mirrored my own views for quite some time, sadly.

  13. VP of Oz says:

    nice post

  14. RC78 says:

Great post. I think the feeling is that we should NOT be happy with ONLY the FA Cup. We should aim higher and give ourselves a change to really challenge for the EPL and the CL.

In the last few years, the 4th spot and the FA Cup have become our targets very early on in the season and this is not right for AFC. What we want is to challenge until the very end for the two big trophies EPL and CL.

  15. RC78 says:

    Arsenal aiming for:
    – Oblak, Leno, Donnaruma, Areola or Trapp at GK.
    – Sidibe, Semedo, Widmer at RB in case Bellerin is sold
    – Gaya at LB
    – Koulibaly, Gomez, Thiago Silva, Maguire, Manolas at CB
    – Naingollan, Gueye, Nzonzi, Danilo, Carvalho at HM
    – Seri, Goretzka, Modric at CM
    – Mertens at LF
    – Werner at CF

    Most likely outcome:
    – Leno, Sidibe, Maguire, Nzonzi, Seri

Leno – Sidibe, Maguire, Koscielny, Monreal – Ramsey, Nzonzi, Wilshere – Miky, Ozil – Auba

Ospina – Chambers, Mustafi, Holding, Koli – Xhaka, El Neny, Seri – AMN, Laca, Wellbeck

    Best possible outcome:
    – Oblak, Sidibe, Koulibaly, Naingollan, Seri, Mertens, Werner

Oblak – Sidibe, Kouli, Kos, Nacho – Ramsey, Naingo, Wilshere – Miky, Ozil – Auba

Ospina – Chambers, Mustafi, Holding, Koli – Xhaka, El Neny, Seri – Wellbeck, Laca, Mertens

  19. Big Raddy says:

    Morning All,

    Thank you for the posts.

At the start of every season I am full of optimism, expecting AFC to sweep the board of trophies, then within a few weeks I am grateful just to watch some good flowing football and to enjoy the emotional rollercoaster of being a Gooner.

    Win stuff – brilliant.
Top 4 – almost as good.
Below top 4. Some angst is good for the soul. Ying and Yang.

  20. Eddie says:

didit must be snowed under. Either this or he has had enough of weak, weak Gunners. both players and supporters. Can’t say I blame him

  21. Big Raddy says:

No live action = less blogging unless there is transfer speculation.

Have we got any unfounded rumours`?

  22. Rasp says:

    Welcome back Raddy.

There are two rumours we’d hope aren’t true. Ramsey to Chelski and …. Jack has been offered a pay cut in his new deal and could be off to Italy 🙄

  23. chas says:

    Me neither

  24. Big Raddy says:

    Which one is Micky?

  25. fred1266 says:

Another rumour I hear isn’t true is bellerin being sold to fund new transfer

  26. Rasp says:

What about all the good rumours? … we’re going to sign the world’s most expensive goalkeeper apparently 🙄

  27. RC78 says:

    Rasp:
    – Chelsea is indeed interested in Ramsey and so are Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Man City
    – Wilshere is holding out to see what type of contract he is offered. His priority is to stay at AFC so am hopeful and I am also hoping that the Board will offer a good contract because JW is a club player and we need this type of players at the clob.

In our squad, here are the players we must keep:
    – Ospina
    – Bellerin (but we are selling him for 50 Mln EUR so that’s the end :-()
    – Koscielny
    – Chambers
    – Movrapanos
    – Monreal
    – Koli
    – Ramsey
    – Wilshere
    – Xhaka or El Neny
    – AMN
    – Ozil
    – Miky
    – Wellbeck
    – Aubameyang
    – Lacazette (just because we just bought him and we need to treat him as an asset)
    – Nketiah

    Everybody else can go:
    – Cech
    – Jenkinson
    – Holding (loan)
    – Mustafi
    – El Neny or Xhaka
    – Campbell
    – Iwobi (loan)
    – Perez
    – Akpom (loan)

    Our most talented players are:
    – Bellerin, Kos, Ramsey, Wilshere, Ozil, Miky, Auba

Given the above our team shuold line up to their strengths in a 4-3-2-1

GK – Bellerin (but he is leaving apparently), CB, Kos, LB – Ramsey, DM, Wilshere – Miky, Ozil – Auba

What we need is a strong CB, LB and DM and if Bellerin leaves a strong RB as well and then we need bench players that can stretch defenses on the width and vertically as well.

    – If Bellerin leaves, we can try to lure Sidibe, Semedo or Meunier
    – At LB, we should really try to get Gaya from Valencia
    – At CB, the best would be Koulibaly
    – At DM, let us go for a big coup and get Naingollan
    – At CM, let us get Seri (he wants to leave and would provide excellent cover for Ramsey, Wilshere, Ozil and Miky)
    – And then wingers, why not even go for Zaha or similar players?

  28. Rasp says:

Thanks RC78 … exhaustive research by you as always … do you play Championship Manager? 🙂

… what new keeper are you predicting?

  29. RC78 says:

Rasp – I used to play CM…it has been years though 😦

For GK – It seems Leno will be the chosen one but there are also rumours about Oblak (impossible), Areola/Ruffier/Trapp and Donnarrumma.

Leno is fine but not really an upgrade from Cech or Ospina. I would have liked to aim for Courtois, Kepa or even Allison…

I was shopping with the wife for a present for her mother.

She said she wanted something electric.

    I suggested a chair.

  32. Big Raddy says:

Eddie. That is a top quality dive.

    GN5. You have a mother-in-law??

On the GK front – why not try promoting wat we have until the end of the season? How will AW know if Macey can be our future GK? Or recall Martinez. It seems os though Ospina is off in summer, Cech will be the Old Fella helping the new GK, so why not give the kids a go?

  33. GunnerN5 says:

BR, I was very lucky my mother in law was a wonderful lady. She lived until she was 98 years old. She spent her 96th with us here in Canada.

A funny story about her visit was one evening I cooked her fish and chips – it was her choice and she really enjoyed the meal. Later that evening I passed by her bedroom and she was sitting on the bed talking to my wife. Afterwards my wife told me “mum said look that nice man who cooked the fish and chips just went by” so my wife told her that I was her husband to which her mum replied “that’s good because I like him”.

We also celebrated our 50th anniversary during her stay – so her level of awareness was somewhat suspect.

  34. Eddie says:

GN5 – ha ha ha 🙂 My mother is worse, believe me. She hated her carer (2nd in one year) and we had to find someone else. The new woman starts next week. Today my mother was furious with the current carer because she only worked for 6 months and is leaving already. It’s a good job she is 1000 miles away from me
