Be honest, how excited are you about this game? Less than thrilled? Give a monkey’s? Stomach churning anticipation? Mildly interested?
How did you feel pre-game at season’s start?
What’s changed?

Is it the surfeit of football since Xmas? Or that Buornemouth are likely to PTB? Or that Arsenal are not exciting viewing in recent times? Or all of these?
Whatever it is, I am struggling to find the enthusiasm to write this post which is a rarity. It is instructive that the Newsnow feeds, which are my usual source of game info, have nothing on the match and all on AFC’s potentially disastrous transfer window!
Onto the game. Bournemouth are a surprise insomuch as I hardly expected them to survive a season in the PL let alone become established mid-table. This season they sit just above the drop zone but in recent weeks have improved.
It is admirable that the much-in-demand Eddie Howe has stayed, and that the BoD and backroom staff at B’mouth have created an atmosphere which not only keeps Howe satisfied but also imbues the players with confidence. Much like our own club.
Could Howe manage AFC or do we need a higher profile more Internationall experienced manager? A discussion for later.
As usual we have a swathe of injuries – JW joining the chaps on the massage table. Ramsey may well return to continue his partnership with Xhaka.
My Team:
Cech
Chambers Mustafi Holding
Bellerin Ramsey Xhaka M-N
Iwobi
Lacazette Sanchez
It is time Iwobi came good. It is time Lacazette scored. Time Sanchez showed his undoubted class and repays some of the debt he owes Mr Wenger in keeping him at such cost this season.
If we want Top 4 winning games and going on a long unbeaten run is imperative.
Let it start this afternoon.

Arsenal News 24/7

I’m actually looking forward to the game. Our form isn’t that bad (other than the reserves putting up a shocker in the FA Cup) although a few too many draws of late. If Özil is back then I expect a win, if not then it might be another draw or something worse. A Lacazette goal would be really useful right now and a clean sheet even more so. We can still get top 4 imo but we must win this game.
Cheers, BR.
Might be bullshit but this reckons Jack and Mesut might be back.
Would be nice to see Jack get a warm welcome and then play them off the park. ☺
https://twitter.com/moleyfootball/status/952471444646084611
Cech
Chambers Mustafi Holding
Bellerin Wilshere Xhaka AMN
Özil Lacazette Sanchez
If Özil doesn’t play I’d like to see Ramsey in that role rather than Iwobi.
I expect Wilshere to start. Was training this week so should be fine hopefully.
Thank you, Raddy. 🙂 Always look forward to an Arsenal game. You never know which team will turn up and what they will produce, Yes, Pool-MC will be good, but ARS-Pool or ARS-MC will be better, so plenty of time for that. 🙂 Let them both lose 2 points each.
Oh dear, poor Erik
Drugs are the solution and you know it 🙂
Thing is, we’ve slithered backwards to the Everton level. Oh no, make that Burnley. More and more fans don’t even appear bothered about CL qualification.
Remember, this team Arsene has built is now at it’s peak. Once the top stars starting pushing off, it’s the “in transition” stage. Again!
Never mind eh 🙂
How we could do with a few of these today…

Stomach churning anticipation
when too much Arsenal is never enough
COYG!
Great to read you chaps are rigid with anticipation. Come gametime I will be joining you but in the meantime Mrs R has a flea market to drag me around.
So Sanchez hasn’t travelled for our game today. Move imminent…?
Cech
Chambers Mustafi Holding
Bellerin Wilshere Xhaka AMN
Özil
Welbeck Lacazette
Could just be his head isn’t on the game, but the rumours are United is where he’s heading. I’d take Martial or Mkhitaryan as a swap but think that’s a pipe dream. Could be the Malcom deal getting done which prompts him leaving aswell. Either way I think we will have someone coming in.

Cheers Raddy
Arsenal enthusaism? The answer lies in the flea market. This is not specific to you Raddy, the danger of becoming the dreaded “Companion” applies to all.
As women mature they seek a companion. Riding bikes, investigating museums, art gallery’s, new restaurants, and worse of all, “Markets”.
At this stage you become a nobody. Reg next door could do your job, and if he has a passion for £2 trinket jewellery then he’s better than you. If he likes charity shops, your finished.
This destroys a mans libido and desire for 3-0 victories. The more of a “Companion” we become, the greater the belief that Eddie Mcgoldrick is acceptable Arsenal standard and a draw against a team with a dangerous striker like Shane Long is perfectly acceptable.
The answer is to say No. Claim the right to stare at other women in flea markets, haggle with the cashier in charity shops, and ditch the bike for a ride in a Cab. As a bonus, breath in the diesel and start slurring your words.
Of course, this is why I live alone and the last time I felt the soft touch of a women was during a very bumpy tube ride on a packed train, but, none of my pants are second hand and am aggressively expecting a 5-0 win at Bournemouth.
Same side as midweek, which means no Özil Sanchez, or Ramsey (bench). I now believe we could very easily lose this game. I hope I’m wrong and the trio of Welbeck, Lacazette and Iwobi gets us some goals (as I’m writing their names I can feel disappointment washing over me!). I hope our strike force next season looks better than that!
COYG! *sigh*
Thanks for the PM Raddy … you did a pretty good job for someone with little enthusiasm 🙂
I think we can now enjoy every game with anticipation. Arsenal are the football version of Brexit … no one has a clue what will happen.
I’m sure Lacaz is on the verge of finding that other 2% that means his efforts will turn into goals … let it be today!
No Ozil…………….dis-a-ppoin-ted
So pissed off with this Sanchez and Özil farce, but will save it for later. Hopefully the players on the field actually give a shit about the club and put in a good performance. If we can defend like we did at Chelsea and create some better moments going forward then we can get the result we really need.
“the dreaded “Companion””
We are not worthy. Brilliant.
Slim
Are we assuming that Ozil is as close to leaving as Sanchez?
Sanchez has his coat on and both feet out of the door … good riddance! …. I reckon Ozil has a slight injury and Arsene wants him to know how much we love him
I’ll start the singing and showing the love then:
We love you Mesut, we do………………………………………..
I still think it is the club who are ushering Sanchez out.
Ok, have read a top Transplant piece and walked beneath a blazing sun on a stunning beech.
I’m ready
beach as in by the sea not under a tree 🙄
Whatever happens, I had a fine morning watching the cricket.
Terry. Thank you. I was unconsciously slipping into “companionship”, it stops today.
Sun? What’s that?
COYRRG
M-N Ooooooooo
WIlshere running this game but the end product poor from us so far. We look like we have a real lack of confidence in that forward 3.
Agree FGG. Not a shot as yet from any of them. Welbeck a passenger so far
LB,
Özil has never said or shown he’s unhappy, in fact quite the opposite, and I’ve always maintained he will stay and sign a new deal. I think the Wenger contract delayed his signature and it wouldn’t suprise me if he was waiting to see who we replace Sanchez with before agreeing. Wenger said he was 50-50 for this game so I don’t see anything sinister about him not being involved….Sanchez however…..
Xhaka’s corners looking our most likely avenue. Some wicked balls going into that 6 yard box.
AMN 1v1 defending is not as good as it needs to be sometimes.
Am not a footballer but on the fast break bellerin has the ball, and lacazette on the left side of the field and refusing to move for the ball, shouldn’t be come in field and demand the ball from bellerin
FGG
Still not sure of M-N’s best position. Further forward maybe.
FGG/ERIK
Agree about forwards.
Fred,
Depends on the situation. Sometimes it’s best to hold shape so as to occupy defenders and make space for someone else. Also if you head towards the ball you are usually dragging a defender with you which might cramp Bellerin for space and give him less room to operate in.
Lacazettes movement is usually pretty good but it might be he’s getting frustrated at making the runs because the ball never arrives. Since he’s arrived we’ve had a problem getting him in space. Not quite sure why.
Fred
I was a top flight footballer, and I agree
(vice captain of my prep school under-11’s, if you must know)
We do miss having Giroud as an option
https://twitter.com/MarksmanGiroud/status/952545645260365825
Micky. First team?
Micky,
I think he has the pace and composure to be a very very good HM player, but he’s raw and has a lot to work on. Commentators saying he looks good in forward positions, but all of our young players seem to have that ability but it doesn’t mean that’s where they should end up.
I can see him doing the sort of job Fernandinho does for City, but that may be difficult as Wenger doesn’t seem to like to play with one of those!
Captain of vice, more like.
Best by far of that half was watching JW strength, vision and passing ability
Welbz and Laca lacking the confidence that goals bring to a striker.
I wish they’d also show some vague sign that they might know how to play together as an attacking pair.
Chas. Agree. Would rather see Theo alongside Laca
Chas
That came later, and I was definitely full captain material
Is it ok to say I’m a bit bored
Great ball by Iwobi.
Was going to say ‘yes’ Micky cos I couldn’t see how we were going to score and then that happens 😁😁😁
Much less bored now 🙂
Get in
Terrific pass from Iwobi
Haven’t read the pre-match Raddy but I’m sure it’s fab
I’ll get bored more often then Peaches 🙂
😁
Can one of our strikers score now please
Yes, the pass from Iwobi was brilliant. Lacaz and Welbeck look seriously lacking in confidence but Jack, M-N and Bellerin really look up for it
😂 ditto peaches
Important we don’t over commit to attack and get hit on the break now
70 mins is Ramsey and Kolasinac time. We are being pushed back
We could tire quickly given all this team played midweek. Another goal would be nice before the last 15 minutes.
Typical Arsenal 😳
In the blink of an eye ☹️
Awful defending.
Bored again
Come on strikers
Ramsey’s haircut is very Welsh
We are ace.
Oh for goodness sake 😡
Oh dear
Does Cech need a rest?
Ok, we’ve had a shit 5 minutes …. let’s see some real fight from these players …. we’ve been told many times that they have spirit …. time to prove it
We have been rubbish ever since we scored
And how many times have we seen that? We invariably switch off after we score
Life without Özil and Sanchez is very very average. Let’s hope Özil signs and we try and replace Sanchez. Problem is, whilst we are busy sorting those gaps out, it stops us from solving all the other problems within this team i.e. HM, CB, RWB cover
Took 2 minutes for Wilson to get off the pitch. Ref added nothing
We need a change of emphasis in our style of play and the management of our players. I’m struggling to think of anything productive Welbeck has done in this game
We played well for an hour but with hardly any attacking thrust.
Beaten by a very average team. We have major problems
If Wenger doesn’t prioritise the Europa League after that result he wants his brains tested
Both Welbeck and Lacazette were crap,
We will not win the Europa.
Match summary
We’ve won games in 5 minute spells this season, but we are also capable of throwing them away.
We were comfortable, and then just fall asleep. Never known a side like it.
Is there no relief from this wave of shite that we have to put up with? Would the manager leaving even sort this out? I’m not sure anymore.
I don’t know what to say really …….. our defending wasn’t bad but twice Cech gets caught and they score …….. we’re always going to concede so we have to either take our chances or try harder to score 😡😡😡
We may not win the Europa, but it is our only chance of getting in the CL next season
Disagree peaches …. our defending as a team was poor for both goals …. nothing new there
“Would the manager leaving even sort this out? I’m not sure anymore”
Really hard to imagine it having a negative impact 🙂
and it is over for a Top 4 finish and rightly so – we may not even finish 5th…so 6th may be what we deserve after all…
Europa League is our only salvation for CL and Carbao Cup for domestic silverware but I don’t see it happening at home…
At least – things are clear:
1. We could give Ospina a chance in goal in the EPL
2. Holding and Chambers are really weak mentally
3. The back 3 option is not good enough
4. AMN is a winger / FW, not a defensive player
5. Xhaka cannot be a HM
6. Iwobi is not good enough
7. Walcott lost his hunger
8. Wellbeck and Lacazette do not work well together
9. How we missed Giroud
10. We also missed Sanchez
11. A change of system is urgently needed and some players need to be benched
—>
Ospina – Bellerin, Mustafi, BFG, Koli – Xhaka, El Neny, Wilshere – Ramsey, Ozil – Lacazette
If we buy new players, then priority should be:
– CB – Evans before going for Koulibaly or Garay in the summer
– HM – Gueye
– FW – Mahrez
Then:
Ospina – Bellerin, Evans, Kos, Koli – Xhaka, Gueye, Wilshere – Ramsey, Mahrez – Lacazette
Cech – Chambers, Holding, BFG, Monreal – Debuchy, El Neny – AMN, Cazorla, Wellbeck _ Giroud
If we sell Walcott to Everton, then let s get Gueye from them
If we sell Sanchez to Man Utd, let us get the fee and Mhiktyrian
If we get Mhyktyrian, then let us sell Ozil as well
Cech
Chambers Mustafi Holding
Bellerin Wilshere Xhaka AMN
Iwobi Lacazette Welbeck
Look at that team and tell me what I’m supposed to get excited about. How many of that team would get in any of the other top 6 sides? How far have we dropped? Even if we go out and replace Walcott and Sanchez, the team is still miles away from success. Where’s the solid CB’s? Where’s the RWB cover? Where’s the HM? Where’s the wingers? Where’s the goals?
Furthest we’ve ever been from success whilst Wenger at the club.
In terms of transfers, this is what would make sense this winter:
Departure:
– Sell Walcott to Everton and get Gueye
– Sell Sanchez to Utd, get the fee + the Armenian boy
– Loan out Iwobi, Jeff
Arrival
– Get Evans
– Get Gueye
– Get Mhyktirian
– Get Mahrez
We won’t lose face and would improve our squad
This is what circling the drain looks like doesn’t it. Anyone who wants wenger to stay wants more of this shite don’t they. Anyone who wants wenger to stay is happy with the state of affairs at the club aren’t they. Anyone who thinks if wenger buys the ‘right’ players it’ll all get better is delusional. Anyone who thinks wenger is best positioned to lead the team forward should acknowledge they don’t know shite. The teams problems begin and end with one man, of that there is no rational disagreement.
Sell Sanchez, bank the money, save it for the next one. Any money he spends is wasted. Someone suggested concentrating on EL. They should be concentrating on qualifying for EL next year.
FGG – it s not only the players, it is the system
I really believe that you have to:
1. Build your team around a strong spine (GK – CB – HM – CM – ST)
2. Build your team around your best players
3. Play your best players in their best position
In our case now and with Walcott and Sanchez leaving, that would mean and it case we do not recruit anyone:
Ospina – Bellerin, Mustafi, Kos, Koli – Xhaka, El Neny, Wilshere – Ramsey, Ozil – Lacazette
If we recruit:
Ospina – Bellerin, EVANS, Kos, Koli – Xhaka, GUEYE, Wilshere – Ramsey, Mahrez – Lacazette
OR
Ospina – Bellerin, EVANS, Kos, Koli – GUEYE, Wilshere – Ramsey – Mahrez, Lacazette – Giroud
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfeveU90dAQ
Bellerin had a good game
So, could have gone either way.
Lacazette gets no service on the ground in good locations- looped balls over the top in a packed D is not going to work for him.
Have watched game after game, and 90% of time no one passes it to the correct spot during his runs on the counter. Play gets held up or Arsenal players can’t get him the ball properly. Arsenal are not getting any more production in scoring with Sanchez going. Buy a top notch Defender, buy another ball holding, pacy dribbler or convert AMN, and get some more pace up top! This slow side to side play will never amount to anything other than a good Cup playing side.
Buy this summer, shift the team, it can be done.
Only hope is that the Arsenal get their $h*te together and make a Europa league run. Arsenal’s top 4 aspirations were gone weeks ago.
Dead wood needs to be moved!
Our spine is not great
We are not building the team around our best players
Our best players are not played in their best position
Rc78,
If Elneny is one of our better players then it doesn’t matter what system we have. We have far too many average players and right now we have far too many players with low confidence who are out of form. We go through long periods every year now where we lack confidence and have a run of poor results and that says to me that there are bigger issues than formation. The mentality is all wrong at this club and it stems from those making decisions, including Wenger.
These last 2 seasons have been a shambles from start to finish, first with Wengers contract and now with the players situation. How we won the FA Cup in the middle of it I’ll never know, but fair play to the team for that. It’s not good enough though and that win shouldn’t take away from what has been an absolute shambles from the top level down.
Cheers Chas
Just tuned in and saw the replay of The Ox goal
Things can and will improve but it’s going to take a long rebuild. In the immediate future we badly need to beat Chelsea and get to a cup final to create some confidence, and the announcement of Wilshere and Özil’s new contracts would be a shot in the arm. Then we need a good transfer window (how long has it been since we had one of those!) where we can get excited about some fresh attacking talent joining the team. I’m still hopeful that we see some new blood this month and Sanchez and Walcott get moved on.
Lallana, David Silva, Bernardo Silva sat on the bench watching this game. They’d walk into our side.
😦
Thanks Raddy for the post, I was hoping to comment before the game. You are a trooper to keep these going in the circumstances, and I think the questions you raise and the feelings you have expressed have been answered today.
I admire the remaining bloggers on here that keep that Arsenal enthusiasm going. I will never boo the team or a player and still enter games wanting to win but somehow a loss like this doesn’t really hurt me like it used to. A slight brief moment of a sinking feeling aside I can almost shrug it off as if I expected it. Similarly the wins don’t get me out of my seat roaring either as I think I fully expect them to make little difference overall.
I must admit I want that acute anticipation and excitement back. I want to be more bothered about wins and losses. I am even a bit blase about the TW which historically sees me like a kid in a sweet shop anticipating who we might get and playing fantasy football manager in my mind.
The problem now is I don’t think that just getting the right players solves our issues. It obviously helps but I think we have fundamental flaws in our coaching, tactics and approach to games mentally and in our game management during the game. These are all things that have been wrong for a few seasons now and are all things that the manager is supposed to sort out.
I also think our young promising players go backwards once they start featuring in the 1st team under the 1st team coach. Once famed for turning these players into top players Arsene now seems a fair way off other top coaches in his ability in this area now and I already fear for Iwobi and have worries about AMN, Nelson and the others that are starting to knock on the door.
I don’t even have confidence in Arsene getting the right players anymore in TW’s and feel he buys a player based on a style he likes rather than what the team really needs, with Elneny and Xhaka being prime examples of this. I think I would be happier for a new manager to decide who he wants rather than spending big now on who Arsene wants.
I kind of feel that having Arsene still as our manager is like being stuck at a station in an area that used to feel rather nice but that you have seen too much of and now feels a bit boring and stale. The train has picked others up and moved on but we are still stuck at the station waiting for our train to take us somewhere new. I hope that train comes soon so we don’t get left too far behind.
I am looking forward to getting a few post Wenger years under our belt so that I can reflect on his greatness again rather than where my focus is right now on feeling he is taking the club backwards. It feels a bit crap to perceive him this way to be honest.
Liverpool are making my day …. fantastic football …. inspirational manager
Could be one good thing that it looks like Pool are going to protect our invincibles season. would be nice for Arsene to have that and the record FA cup wins to walk away with. Will be interesting to see how AOC develops under Klopp. We could learn a lot later this season about where Arsene still stands in players development.
If Arsene stays to the end of this season then I really hope he can get the EL and Karibou cup. Adding 2 of the missing trophies to his tenure would be a fine way to depart and he would leave having got us back into the ECL.
GB,
Are you convinced Wenger is still taking care of transfers? I’m not.
He seemed to indicate he nothing of the young Greek lad who was bought recently, and he seems unsure of the Sanchez situation, where he’s going, or who is supposed to be replacing him. He also mentioned in the press conference after the game that it’s important that Sanchez is replaced if he leaves, would he say that if he was the one in control of it? Surely he’d know if he’s replacing him or not.
I might be reading it incorrectly, but there have been a lot of changes this season in the back office and I wonder what effect they’ve had on the decision making.
At least today is Invincibles Day. 4-1! Getting hammered!
loving this game!
Attack at warp speed…
Pool killing it, should be up 5-1.
maybe $h*tTy’$ undefeated season coming to an end and I can stop listening the media’s instant crowning of their 4 trophy allocation before they are even done playing.
Today I have seen a brilliant game of cricket and of football. 😏
Me too, loving this game, both teams going for it, ‘pool taking their chances.
GB – agree with you about AW winning two more trophies this season ……. hope he can be persuaded that that has to be his lot 😉
Talk of Aubemeyang after he was left out of Dortmund squad. Can’t see it, but I’d take him and a swap for Mkhitaryan with Sanchez all day long.
Transfer rumours are all the joy I’ve got with Arsenal at the moment!!! 😂
Aub is going to china….
I wonder if this City performance has just added 10-20m to Alexi’s value?
I think City will be 15 points ahead despite losing today
Aaron,
All rumours at the moment.
What a game!
Oh no ……. Gooners counting chickens too early again 😉

GB. I have taken your comment for tomorrow’s post. If you prefer I can put it back into today’s comments.
GB,
Don’t disagree with any of that. My point was only on the here and now and I don’t think he still has full control of things.
That Liverpool game was a joy to watch. Teams who have the attacking power to cover over their defensive frailties. It’s not just us who can’t defend in this league, but we just don’t score the same amount of goals as these teams. Work to do at both ends of the pitch.
– Ox having a good time at LFC as a B2B Mid- good for him
– To replace Sanchez, here are the names coming out:
-> Malcolm
-> Mhiktyrian
-> Mahrez
-> Draxler
-> Fekir
Draxler and Fekir – no chance
Mahrez – little chance
Miky – if Sanchez goes to Utd, then Miky comes
Malcome – likely at a overpaid 50 Mln EUR
Out of the lot, I d take Mahrez
Strong rumours now about Aubameyang. Is this the clubs PR machine selling us another dream? Or could this happen?
If Aubam comes, he will add pace and directness to our game.
RC78,
He would add an end product, I’d be more excited about that! If we did end up with him and Laca upfront and firing with Özil behind then we’d have half a chance. Won’t buy him though so nothing to worry about!
So Sanchez will leave and Walcott too and the replacement are
– Aubameyang for Sanchez for 53 mln pounds
– Mhykthirian for Walcott as part of Sanchez deal
Both players are well known to our new recruiting manager and Balague confirms for Aubameyang and he is quite reliable

Motning all. Big cats vid on Beebs iPlayer. That’s all
So frustrated with Wenger and the club. To go into this season with your best players nearly out of contract is bad enough, but it’s made even worse by his justifications of the situation. To claim that the players are professional and it will have no impact on how they play is just lunacy, has he already forgotten how in the middle of last season his own contract issue had a huge detrimental effect on the players.
To top it off, he then drops one of his star players because they were being vague and thinking about a transfer. Exactly what he said would NOT happen, because after all, these are professionals.
Very naive from Arsene and far too much trust placed in money grabbing, trophy chasing footballers.
A replacement should’ve been lined up for Sanchez long ago. It shocks me that we haven’t actually got a specific target in mind to replace him even though we know he’s been going for over a year. First it was Lemar, then Malcom (possibly Walcotts replacement), then there’s rumours of Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang. I appreciate that transfer opportunities come and go, and rumours are often just that and behind the scenes it could all be planned out, but at the moment it doesn’t seem like that and it appears we are just taking whatever is available as we have no idea what Sanchez is doing or where he’s going. To allow one player (2 if you include Özil) to put all your future transfer dealings on hold is ridiculous. The club is being held to ransom by players who have no interest in taking our money! Everything has to wait and potential player opportunities slip by whilst these 2 sort their futures.
Rant over. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRERGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Now it’s over! 😂
fattie – now you sound naïve 🙂 The AFC has been run badly for several years now. There have been warning signs for yonks’ – selling best players without worthy replacements, transfer window embarrassments, missing out on TW targets, buying last minute very average players…I could go on and on, and on.
I called many AAers deluded and they called me doomer. Now, you tell me, if I repeat the same doom laden prophecies year after year, they’ll have to come true one day, no?
Did you watch Pool v City last night? That was a great game. And for me choosing to watch other teams rather than Arsenal is criminal. I have NEVER before done that.
Eddie,
I’m fully aware we’ve been a shambles for a while. I just think this latest embarrassment has taken us to a new low. There’s always seemed to be a reason for things happening in the past, but this is just amateur hour. It’s been proof that the club is a joke behind the scenes and it’s not all just Wenger as some would have us believe. I’m hoping the back office changes we’ve made this season will sort some of the shit out.
I did have the pleasure of watching that game yesterday. It didn’t help my mood when I saw all that attacking talent on show and then compared it to the 11 we put out yesterday!
Oh do cheer up everyone
We’re two players short. No big deal
Always Micky 🙂
Morning all. Raddy I didn’t realise you had pilfered my comment. I thought it had been swallowed by the computer. There was me ranting at the bloody thing and going off in a huff thinking I haven’t got time to bloody rewrite it now 🙂
There is a New Post
