Why an Arsenal surge to 4th matters. Or does it?

In the red corner, and missing out on European places altogether, we have the advantage of fewer games next season, and consequently, a better chance of going for the League. See Leicester and Chelsea for evidence.

In the other corner, we have the surge and a CL place. For me, this is the one. A surge would clearly mean winning games, and that is good for everyone. Bi-products of the surge could see us beating a Maureen Utd and depriving them of CL football which would be fun, as well as the nice warm gooey feeling of beating Spurs at the lane and putting the final nail in their title dreams, for dreams they are.

Also, a surge inevitably means a return to form, and the not insignificant matter of the FA Cup. It is of course quite possible that two victories at Wembley could see us again heap misery on our loathsome  neighbours. Again, more fun

Before I complete the surge category, a quick word on the Champions League and the “what’s the point” thinking. As I’ve said before, I want to see Arsenal lift Ol Big Ears before I snuff it, and following the small issue of the Bayern defeat, we do appear as far away as ever. Well, when I say ever, not as far away as not being in it. You know the saying.

Winning it is a very long shot, and to my mind we have no right to get even as far as the last eight, barring a good draw, let alone winning the thing. Europe has eight clubs financially bigger than us. Still, one could apply the “what’s the point” thinking to about 67 football league clubs who have no chance of winning the League, barring the Leicester (League) and Porto (CL) freak result type of chance.

There’s also a middle corner, where we have a Europa spot. Surely we have a better chance of winning this baby than the one for grown ups. Me? No thanks to this one.

Apols to all, had to rush the post before deadline.

Let’s see a show of hands. Vote, you wish for Top four, Europa, or 6th

Ed: Micky has asked me to add a poll … I hope the choice of options are in line with his thinking.

  1. VP of Oz says:

I think its time to get realistic!
    Top 4 finish
    FA Cup winners
Spuds collapse again and they finish below us again
Wenger re-signs new contract and the signing is exclusively televised by Arsenal Fan TV
    Arsenal sign Griezmann for £mil’s + £1

and to celebrate, I’ll be going to watch Arsenal play in Sydney in July…

  2. mickydidit89 says:

    Hi VP

While you make perfectly wise and realistic comments, do you think we’d have a better chance of a league title without Europe, and is it worth losing out on as a result?

  3. mickydidit89 says:

    ps Thanks Rasp for poll.

  4. Rasp says:

No worries Micky …. there’s always at least one ‘None of the above’ 🙂 …. but they never come on to say what the perfect option would have been for them?

  5. Zed says:

    Nice one Micky, 🙂

I voted for qualification to the CL.

As you were into ‘sayings’ I will reiterate the oldest and truest – ‘You gotta be in it to win it’.

Rasper has neatly covered the catch all ‘none of the above’ category and mentioned that no one actually then says what the preferred alternative is. [Spuds fans??]

I had considered doing so myself, as I rarely vote anyway, because what I think is pretty redundant – I will support the Arsenal whatever happens – but that does not mean I am agin a poll, as it can be fun for others. 🙂

  6. Zed says:

The latest rumour to emanate from that august body ‘The Daily Mirror, has it that Ivan Gazidis, who told various fans’ forums that the past few weeks had been a catalyst for change, had not informed AW what he meant – according to the latest ‘news’.

Wenger strongly implied that he did not know what Ivan meant, when he bounced back a journalist’s question on the subject – and asked the journo what he thought it meant.

Mis-communication? Or disagreement on the manner of changes required? Interesting if true.

  7. Big Raddy says:

    Micky. Thank you

    I voted for silverware.

To win the FAC we will have to beat both MC and a London club at Wembley. How sweet would that be?

  8. Big Raddy says:

Zed. Could the catalyst for change be the departure of Gazidis?

  9. GunnerN5 says:

None of the above was my vote.

I would like a top 4 finish and the FA Cup, plus Wenger stays.

  10. GunnerN5 says:

Thank you for the Post Micky In order to get my preference we need to come out from under our shells and win 4 important games against or key rivals.

Man U and Spurs in the league and Man C and either Spurs or Chelsea in the FA Cup – not too much to ask for now is it?

  11. VP of Oz says:

didit, I’m with Zed, you have to be in it to win it. I also spent 8 years working at a casino and that was drilled into me daily.
If you’re not in it then you don’t get the chances like we did in 2006.
Personally, I think playing Europa would be worse for our title chances then playing CL.

  12. wally says:

Gazidis is the problem? Well that’s a new one. Should i laugh or cry?

Wenger knows exactly what gazidis meant. He told us that he would let us know end of March/early April. Now he’s playing semantics with his own goal bs. Either he’s a liar or it’s no longer in his control and he won’t admit it. Hopefully the latter.

Fourth doesn’t matter. Getting better matters. Wenger stays, nothing changes. Full stop.

  13. Big Raddy says:

Wally. Who said Gazidis was the problem?

There is clearly something happening at AFC which is stopping AW stating his position, after all he works for the club and will abide by their decisions.. Perhaps there is a power struggle within the upper management with Gazidis wanting AW to leave and the Kroenke’s wanting AW to sign a new contract.

You suppose it is Wenger’s call and you may be right but equally you may not.

  14. GunnerN5 says:

I also subscribe to the theory that something is happening at the club which needs to be sorted before the AW decision is announced.

Whichever way the decision goes it’s bound to cause consternation with those of the opposite persuasion. It’s possible that the club are delaying it until after the season has ended – and then they can let the smoke settle, where it may, during the summer.

  15. GunnerN5 says:

    Hi Fred.

  16. GunnerN5 says:

    Team news: Cech, Ospina, Koscielny

Arsène Wenger has revealed the latest on his team ahead of our visit to Crystal Palace on Monday.

The manager discussed Petr Cech, David Ospina and Laurent Koscielny. Here’s what he said:

    On team news…

I think from Wednesday’s game, nobody should be out. Coquelin is back available after his family problem. He’s back in contention again. I don’t believe that Cech will be available for Monday night, nor Ospina. These are the two players who will still be out.

    On Koscielny…

I didn’t mention him because for me he’s out on Monday night.

On how long Koscielny will be out for…

    It should be short-term.

  17. fred1266 says:

What the of family problems did Coq have

  18. GunnerN5 says:

    I have no idea Fred.

  19. GunnerN5 says:

-2c and 2″ of snow this morning………..it’s supposed to be spring – but from Sat 8th through Fri 14th the temperature will be the high teens with all day sunshine.

  20. Big Raddy says:

GN5. Why are you surprised – it is not is if you live close to the equator 🙂

  21. GunnerN5 says:

100 years ago – plus one day.

6th April 1917, American President Woodrow Wilson signed his official declaration. America was at war in Europe.

  22. GunnerN5 says:

    Raddy 🙂 🙂 🙂

You are so right we are closer to the North Pole………….but still a fantastic country to live in and raise a family. The one and only downside is being so far away from Highbury and the Gunners, but thanks to superb TV coverage I never miss a game.

  23. Big Raddy says:

I have been thinking about a “surge” for much of the day. Is it possible?

We seem to play much better in the sun, so why not?

  24. wally says:

BR, sacking Gazidis suggests that he is the source of the problems at the club. That he is the one who is preventing change from occurring. There is no evidence present or historical to suggest that he is the source of any problems or preventing change from occurring. NONE! What change do you, or anyone for that matter, think will occur if wenger stays and gazidis goes?
Wenger has told us for months that he will tell us when he has made up his mind. It’s an indication that it’s his decision to make. He’s told us he’s made up his mind. And yet this strange radio silence has descended over wenger. He engages in sematics and dissembling. And meanwhile we have statements from both Gazidis and keswick that it will be a mutual decision about what’s best for the club. Those statements from the board indicate that it’s their decision that matters. Wenger can come along or not.
If Kroenke wanted wenger signed it would be done. Nothing Gazidis could say would prevent the owner from doing so. Clearly wenger faces choices he must make about ceding control or conditions that he must meet in order to be kept. If it were merely choices about his role wenger has already told us he’s made up his mind and the situation would be resolved. That he hasn’t, (or perhaps he’s been told he can’t) indicates that there are conditions he must meet in order to stay on as manager.
To paraphrase Holmes once the impossible has been eliminated what remains is the truth.

  25. GunnerN5 says:

Wally, Everything boils down to a few simple facts if Kronke wants AW out then he’s gone. However if he wants him to stay then in the end result it’s AW who decides whether or not he wants to put his signature on a new contract and AW who decides if he leaves.

I’ve not given Gazidis much thought as I’ve considered him to be a talking head and not a real football man but it’s entirely possible that he could have screwed up some of the key transfers that AW wanted and therefore the squad has suffered and AW has borne the brunt – a bit of a stretch but who knows?

  26. Big Raddy says:

wally. You make a good point.

Mine is that without any evidence how can anything be other than surmise?

  27. chas mobile says:

    Cheers, Micky.

    I went for ‘Don’t Know’. 😠

  28. Rasp says:

Chas, you are exempt from all voting polls in the future, since none of the above is always your answer 🙂

  29. Big Raddy says:

    Morning All,

    Eedddddddiiiieeeee. Wake up.

  30. chas says:

    One for the purists…….

  31. mickydidit89 says:

Going to be 19 degrees here today. That’s a friggin’ scorcher as far as I’m concerned and to top that we’re off surfing.

Now to watch a purist’s vid

  32. mickydidit89 says:

Oh no no no, 70’s porn film music and some complete tosspot using words like “interiors” and “halfspace”

It’s impossible NOT to draw a ‘king triangle between three players. Idiot

  33. Ant says:

Don’t let Gooner B loose on that 7.51 or it will be a 25,000 word dissertation.

  34. mickydidit89 says:

We need to compile a list of Dick Words to impress and confuse in equal measure

    I’ll start

    False 9’s

In the vid he actually used the term “inverted overlapping run” ROLF

and “they fill all five vertical lanes to create overloads” ROLF LAMOW

  35. chas says:

    Completely agree about Dick Words.
And there was me thinking that sort of stuff would impress a purist. 🙂

They should just say, ‘we played better, ran around a bit more and West Ham were shite’.
That would be a fairer assessment, innit?

  36. chas says:

One thing GoonerB would have been mightily impressed with was the left-footer Giroud coming in from the right flank and unleashing a Chambéry Copperhead special.

  37. chas says:

  38. mickydidit89 says:

a Chambéry Copperhead special ha ha ha ha ha

I formed The Purists and the rules are simple. No dicks, no bollocks, 2-3-5, defending is for pessimists and only goals matter

  39. chas says:

  40. Rasp says:

Hi Micky, if only goals matter …. you’ve got your wish 🙂

Cast a glance at the goals scored widget and see we have already exceeded last season’s total figure by 10 with about 10 games to go (FA cup inc). Trouble is, we’re currently 2 positions lower in the league compared to last season … do you think there’s a link?

  41. mickydidit89 says:

9:27 is straight forward, simple and wise. No?

The answer was always Mesut being a bit deeper, rather than all that DM and an effing box to box bullshit

Now watch Arsene bring back Ramsey on Monday eyes roll yellow face

  42. chas says:

Rumour is that Eddie is now a regular contributor (comments section) of the HotspurHQ blog.

She’s changed her blogging name to Danny, after Danny Blanchflower and is looking forward to celebrating St Arsenalingham Day with her new Cuffley spud mates.

  43. mickydidit89 says:

    No Rasp
If we’re lower, then we still haven’t scored enough 🙂

  44. mickydidit89 says:

She’s become weak Chas, like LB

  45. chas says:

    I thought LB was abroad?
    Still no excuse, mind.

  46. Zed says:

    Morning folks, 🙂

Wally @ 6:18 pm, in a response to Raddy — Wow!! You have been hiding your light under bushel/barrel.

  47. Zed says:

Eddie weak? I would back her against Chas anyday – and her tiny pug would take care of you, and lick you into submission. 🙂

  48. mickydidit89 says:

Yeah right, abroad, like since we got thrashed by Bayern kinda abroad

  49. mickydidit89 says:

Oh RA, make no mistake, I’m scared of Eddie. Notice how I call her weak from a great distance

  50. chas says:

Bigger bollocks than most on here.

  51. chas says:

  52. chas says:

  53. fatgingergooner says:

Can’t believe the Liverpool team today. Fingers crossed Stoke can do us a favour today.

  54. GoonerB says:

Haha Ant. No long essays from me at the moment. On a short break away with only phone use. Bit of a faff to try and watch the video but based on Micky’s brief analysis I think even I would see it as nonsense bolleux…….not like the sensible and always factually correct bolleux I churn out 😄

I still think a change in formation could see us thrive more. Sometimes you just have a group of players that suit one formation over another and I don’t think we are playing the best one for us. I would still want top 4 and FA Cup but also think huge changes are needed in how we operate at the coaching and playing level if we don’t want to be left behind.

  55. fatgingergooner says:

Gutted that Stoke couldn’t hold on, but that 97th minute Wigan winner just won me £85 so not a bad afternoon. Fingers crossed for a winner on the National.

  56. Big Raddy says:

No surprise all our rivals won today. Stoke rolled over against an average team

  57. mickydidit89 says:

    Bugger the rivals Erik 🙂

    Another sunny morning all

  58. mickydidit89 says:

Ok, thinking about other sides, I guess as long as Chelsea keep winning, nothing really matters. Am I right?

  59. Big Raddy says:

    Morning All,

As you say, a sunny morning. Looking forward to day dyy outside, though the temperature isn’t too mucho get excited about, around 12C.

Last round of US Masters which means a late night tonight

  60. Big Raddy says:

Not really right Micky. Chelsea winning is vital. L’pool and MC dropping points would be the best way forward as we approach season’s end

  61. mickydidit89 says:

Agree Erik, just thinking absolute necessities ie no spud title

We can live with whatever comes our way

Talking of which, while I was away I looked through comments at LeGrove. People there have been demanding AW out for, I don’t know, maybe five years or more, and day in day out get cross. Makes you understand why some put up with miserable marriages.

Just get a divorce for goodness sake

  62. chas mobile says:

  63. mickydidit89 says:

We have Utd and all the rest of them exactly where we want them

That’s my take anyhow. On the shoulder as we come off the final bend 🙂

  64. mickydidit89 says:

Great strings, and Fellaini’s epic on first violin

  65. chas mobile says:

  66. mickydidit89 says:

    Bonjour Chas
Hope you had a fine weekend.

  67. mickydidit89 says:

Blimey, our run-in looks horrible. How does Ant manage to swing afternoon flu with all these Monday games?

  68. chas mobile says:

    Yep, a fine weekend.
    How was the surf?
Monday night football seems like a punishment when everyone else has won.

Palace tickets are way too rich for our 20 away credits blood.
Could have got Boro next Monday but my masochism tolerance levels are a lot lower these days.

  69. mickydidit89 says:

Surf low average. Sunday canoeing high high.
Sun on the back all weekend. Aches everywhere. Feels good this morning.

Seeing the run in, I’m beginning to think we should send out the 2nd XI against these tough tackling relegation fighting minnows. Secure sixth and bother only against Utd, Spurs and The Cup

  70. mickydidit89 says:

  71. Big Raddy says:

    Morning All,

A bit of sun – I will go to Sweden and find a good dentist. Seems the right thing to do.

  72. mickydidit89 says:

Not sure if this helps, Erik, but a friend went from Australia to Ukraine to get her gnashers sorted

  73. chas says:

  74. mickydidit89 says:

Ok you miserable bastards, here’s my question for the day.

Do Dennis Bergkamp and Ronald MacDonald Koeman get on?

  75. Rasp says:

    Morning Micky 🙂

    Morning all ….

    … New post ……
