Heroes and Villains

Remember the opening game of last season? Remember the final whistle? The feeling of angst and anger following the disappointment of losing 1-3 to Villa pervaded the club. Perhaps that atmosphere created the determination which drove us to be top at Xmas (brilliantly predicted by Rocky Lives).

What has changed since then?

Ozil, Alexis, Chambers, Bellerin, Ospina, Welbeck, Debuchy. Quite an ensemble. Are we better? The points tally would say No.

I would be shocked if Villa scored 3 times this afternoon – they have been through difficult times, scoring just 11 goals – 9 less than the next worst (Hull), 28 less than The Arsenal and have scored one goal or less in their last 19 away games! Yet, their last game showed improvement, Villa beat high-flying Bournemouth in the FA Cup.

Lambert is yet another of the hyped managers who have been trumpeted by the media as the next big thing; like Laudrup, Clarke, AVB etc etc he is proving how difficult the PL can be.  Do you think that if Mr Wenger managed Aston Villa they would be a better club and team? Of course they would.

Having won our last 4 games with increasing panache the portents are definitely for an Arsenal win but I have been supporting this team for too long to take a win for granted. This will not be a walkover – Villa have some excellent players; Benteke would flourish at The Emirates, Delph is a better Coquelin, the goal from new-signing Gil shows he is a talent, their defence is strong especially at CB. Beating them will require Arsenal to be in top form.

UnknownBenteke praying for AW to sign him

Enough of them, what about us? Selection is interesting as the long-term injured return to fitness and the first team. To Ozil or not? To Walcocott or not? To drop the excellent Rosicky or not? Ospina or TPIG? etc etc

Here’s my tuppence worth. Defence: Ospina has to start. Then it is Chambers or Bellerin. Given the pace of Villa’s attack (Ang-backdoor etc) I would start Bellerin. CB pick themselves. Monnreal desrves to keep his place after a good run of form.

Coquelin or Flamini? Coq deserves to continue. Tomas or Aaron? Sorry Mozart, but Aaron is essential. As wonderful as Tomas is I prefer the youth and power of Ramsey. Cazorla is undroppable, which leaves the attack.

Given the absence of Alexis I would play Ozil, OG and Theo.

Can you name all the managers of English clubs who have won the European Cup? Have a try.

Clough is easy, so is Paisley, SAF, Busby,. You may struggle with Fagan’s Liverpool or to remember it was Di Matteo who lifted Big Ears with Chelsea. But if I told you that Aston Villa have won the European Cup could you recall their manager without Googling? No? Neither could I 😀 (answer below)

Given yesterday’s results and the improvement in form of both the Knuckle-Draggers and the Hub-Cap Barons we need to in today. If we don’t it will be a huge disappointmet. But we will.

Too depressed watching yet another England batting collapse to write more.

  1. Love that song… my favorite Beach Boys. If I remember correctly it was the B Side of Good Vibrations:-)

We’ll win today Hippy man, no doubt about it. The draw yesterday between the money men means we get that lttle bit closer.

Thanks for the pre match Raddy, reliable as ever, not really a hippy trait 🙂

    Ant suggested Benitez, too. 🙂

    Morning all, nice one Raddy,
Centrebacks pick themselves Raddy, i would have thought that this match was a good opportunity to start our New man but maybe you see it differently.

Rosiski has played very well and while in good form i feel he should also be a starter, Aaron has not been at his best and i would only use him when the game has been wrapped up, Yes i am expecting a win at home, and in form playing a team near the bottom i would expect a win. All teams pose risks and Villa are no different but to beat us at home playing like we can must not be on the cards.

Ospina or TPig must be Ospina, couple of clean sheets and i like the calmness he shows, not keen on his fumbles but hopefully that will not be a problem.

Will be interesting how Wenger see’s it, but we need to keep climbing, three points today would put us 2 points closer to the leaders and against this kind of opposition we should cruise.

    3.0 to us COYRRG’s

Lovely PM Raddy – it gave me Good Vibrations 😛

I thought it was 26May who predicted we’d be top at Christmas?

Any way, this is a CLG (MWG in Room 101) 😆 after yesterday’s results. Of course we have the fire power and we’ve had a bit of a rest in terms of games per week, let’s hope we are sharp and at ’em from the start.

  5. Could Jock Stein be included in that list?

  6. Erik the Red's avatar Big Raddy says:

And Ant would be right. Well played that man

  7. Fine pre-match BR, thank you.

Can I name the next manager of an English club to win the Champions League?…….Arsene Wenger!!

  8. So this is where Alexis got the idea of raising one half of his shorts… Gervinho is his role model

  9. Erik the Red's avatar Big Raddy says:

Rasp. You are right, it was 26. Hope he is well wherever he is.

Stein is a Jock as his name suggests and so was his club. I said English clubs.

Need a big win today to give us momentum going into the Spurs game. Players need to make sure they apply the same focus as at City away.

Without Sanchez it’s a great opportunity for someone like Özil to run the match.

    4-0 to us.

  19. Looks as if it is yet another defeat for the forlorn hope Andy Murray, two sets to one down and 0 – 3 in the fourth. 😦

I did not have a clue who the AV manager was when they won the European Cup as the Champions League competition was then known — and now I know, I still do not know, if you understand what I mean.

Tony Barton father of Farten Barton?

  22. Yep! 0 – 6 in the fourth set, better luck next time Andy, but don’t hold your breath. 😦

  34. Well at least the back four have played together a few times, Has Ospina played behind this particular line-up?

Ramsey and Le Coq to provide the shield.

Cazorla and Ozil to provide the craft, Walcott the pace and Giroud the blunt trauma. 😀

Keep it tight, score early, keep it tight, score again, get another before half time. Relax and play tika taka for the second half. Get a penalty around sixty minutes, Job Done!

    C’mon The Glorious Gunners.

  59. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gööner In Exile says:

If I was Arsene Wenger I’d have Theo off the pitch at half time, everyone should be able to see his runs and movement are for himself and not the team. He is beginning to really annoy me. To be fair Ive never been convinced, and this half plus his performance at Brighton I am more convinced his future lies elsewhere, he has started to believe his own hype, his positioning this half is causing others to move and therefore unbalancing our stacking shape.

  60. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gööner In Exile says:

Stacking = attacking although at times we have been stacked like planes coming into Heathrow because Theo is only running in one direction.

  61. RockyLives's avatar RockyLives says:

  68. RockyLives's avatar RockyLives says:

Theo is still on his way back from a year out with injury, he needs to be cut some slack.

People were slagging off Santi Cazorla a month or two back and saying his time at Arsenal was up. Now suddenly he’s the best thing since sliced chorizo.

no Rocky, I never wrote Santi off, never. I changed my gravator to Ozil’s for a short while, but never stopped believing in Santiago.

Walcott has only 18 months of his contract left, so this summer it’s just 1 year. Arsenal are supposedly trying to tie him to a 5 year deal, but is this true? Who knows….. I am almost certain that Theo won’t sign a new deal. But he won’t join the opposition either, too nice to do that. I can see him in Spain

  78. fatgingergooner's avatar fatgingergooner says:

  80. RA's avatar RA says:

Rocky, stap me vitals, but you are a wise old mudlark!!

I was pretty much in agreement with Exile regarding Theo’s ‘no show’ today, but your comment does have merit – a year out must take time to become match fit.

Rada Sanchez over Theo is a no brainer, i actually think it becomes more difficult in choosing who out of Santi and Ozil when we want to have two true wide men (say Theo and Alexis).

For me i’d say Santi, but its going to be a juggling act from now to end of the season, one thing is for sure though if the team keep winning anyone left out cannot be too upset.

By the way I reckon Arsene really likes Akpom, and is giving him 20 or so minutes each week to convince him that 1) he has a future with us, and 2) that he will get game time if he puts pen to paper on a new contract.

Bit of improvement over decision making but at 19 years old he certainly has the raw ingredients and maybe a few more than Sanogo. Thing is Giroud at 28 is only a season or two away from being past his powers so it will be important to keep the likes of Sanogo and Akpom at the club to jump in when needed, but then Welly is fast becoming a forgotten man and he is only 24 so we have a player there for a good few years to lead the line.

  140. arnie's avatar arnie says:

Danny versus 20 GAY Giro Guy, ha ha ha. apples and oranges. best quality of Danny is he is English! 😛

Seriously, Danny needs to be much improved. Good stop gap arrangement while Giro was injured, though. 😛 Maybe OK in rotation, just maybe.

Let him stay fit all season and score 20 goals or more, then we will discuss. 🙂

  141. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gööner In Exile says:

Arnie I think we have to remember one of the best things about Arsene is improving players, Koscielny and Giroud are probably two of the current squad for who that is true.

Listening to his interview pre match with Alan Smith was revealing, he was talking about Coquelin, he said he brought him in because his best attribute was a ball winner, but after a while and a few loans Coq thought he was better as a box to box player, Arsene has told him to focus on his best attribute, ball winning and be great rather than stretch his skill set and being average. He also mentioned that his age now means it’s time to decide.

No doubt a similar age to when Song left, and maybe the row was because Song could not see the wisdom of what Arsene was telling him.

Listen to Arsene speak football for any length of time and it really is so hard to understand why so many think he is clueless.

On the topic of players seizing their opportunities, Ospina, Bellerin and Coquelin are all making the most of their chances. It looks to me as though Chuba may have got ahead of Sanogo, there is a lot about him to admire. He hasn’t got the finishing yet but the runs he makes are very good 🙂

  157. Hello all, I’ve thawed out my frozen feet and fingers and watched our fabulous goals again. How joyous was that 🙂

A penalty and four proper Arsenal goals, not a tippy tappy in sight 😀

I know that Villa didn’t really offer much resistance but I’ve watched plenty of games where we should have easily taken the points and have lost. It was lovely to see the players congratulating each other on their goals and their assists. Fingers crossed that the injury monster keeps away from us so that we can carry on moving up the table.

Now who wants to write a post for tomorrow, pretty please

    Cheers Raddy

    Great game, really enjoyed it.

Slowly but surely the genius of Arsene is developing a squad that can take the likes of City and Chelsea. It will come, make no mistake about that

In a couple of years as his contract ends with us winning the Champions and Premier league, the masses will shout “Stay Arsene, we love you” but just like that Shane geezer who honourably and foolishly refused to shag that farmers wife, he will ride into the sunset.

After getting home from the game i was reading Martin Keowns son tell of how Martin prepared for games. On the Friday, Keown would insist on an afternoon siesta. One Particular Friday, Keowns two sons had a massive fight over whos turn it was to play with the Chopper, hence a tug of war ensuing involving a very firm grip.

According to Keown Junior, there dad denied his sleep went ape. Smothering the two boys with a star fish leap and chest butt that sent them sprawling. A few years later, Van Nistolroy got the same treatment.

What amused me so much about the story was that my old man had the same routine. Accept his need of a Friday siesta was centered around the need to be fresh for visiting “Auntie Jean”, the women involved in my unresolved wine gum fetish.

One Friday I and my brother had a big ruck regarding the residence of Douglas the Gold Fish. Unfortunately for Douglas, during the scrap, he was mortally wounded, but the fight continued.

For the first time in my life i saw my enraged father minus his string vest. Though terrified, the only thing I could say was “Dad, weres the vest?”. I soon found out because he had it in hand and proceeded to chase my brother and I round the house lashing us with his second skin, screaming “No Wine Gums for any one tomorrow”

Its funny how football imitates life.

    Morning all,
Well done Raddy you hit the nail on the head with your team prediction.
Wenger surprises me all the time, but not you Raddy.

A great game and a few goals and of course a clean sheet, Its games like this that makes you start thinking of the possibilities of catching the leaders,

Funny when you get a good win just how it gives you thoughts of grandeur. The mind goes back to trophies and winning things, Players emerging and others coming back from injury, Can Arsenal mount a realistic challenge this season, and you have to believe that it is possible.

Our squad is getting stronger the odd new one here and there, and injured coming back fit,Our style now has a togetherness that has been missing, players working for one another, more protection at the back and adventurous up front. Wenger must be feeling more comfortable.

Five goals scored, six if you count the one they ruled offside which wasn’t, Goals that came from everyone, and in all fairness there could have Been more.

One player who i wasn’t impressed with was Theo Walcott, i felt we carried him for most of the game, Theo to me, seems to me that he looks for the quieter places on the field, never gets to involved and challenging for a ball seems to be a couple of strides and then waits for another to actually make a challenge.

I don’t like to pick on one player but i found Theo frustrating and also felt he does as little as he can, and then in an instance he pulls off a truly wonderful goal.

Theo has been out a long time, Naturally he avoids physical contact while he settles back in, and of course he needs time to get his match fitness back, but i still found that every time i saw him side step a challenge i was getting more and more annoyed.

I feel i may expect too much from him to soon so will give him time to prove me wrong, he seems a fans favourite, and with goals like that he deserves time.
