Champions League, here we come.

Firstly, I think the important issue needs to be addressed: dark blue shorts? Daark — Bluuuuue — Shorrrrts……..in all my days, I don’t know?

Ok, onto the game, so it seems that news of Arsenal’s demise was a little premature, a three nil thrashing of Fenerbahce in Istanbul will certainly force the media to do an about face over their suggestions that our season was over before it was even a week old.

There will be many who point to the fact that the Turks were poor and indeed they were but it equally needs to be said that you can only beat who is in front of you and that is exactly what the boys in red, white and, umm, dark blue did and as it turned out they did so quite comfortably.

I say as it turned out because although for the first 20 minutes we looked the better side there was still more than a hint of caution in Arsenal’s play, the hang over from the Villa game lingered on; we had plenty of possession but a goal seemed a way off.

Probably the most significant incident of the first half was Koscielny getting kicked in the head, according to the telly the cut is one of the worst the doctor had seen suffered during a football match. Mah, he’s of Polish stock, they make em tough in that part of the world, I am sure he will be fine for the spud game.

Anyway, the loss of Koscielny had a useful side affect, it forced Sagna into the middle and Jenkinson onto the right. Let’s be honest, Jenkinson is far better at going forward and Sagna is a better defender, the result is that Jenkinson was able to add to the attack that had about as much cutting edge as a knife blade that had been dragged along a concrete floor.

Unsurprisingly, we went in at half time, not having scored; we were not playing badly but a little bit of magic was missing.

Queue the second half and queue the bit of magic the game was crying out for; I thought Theo’s passing had been pants for the whole of the first half but he does seem to have a knack of more and more often doing something very special in a game and that pass to Gibbs for the first goal was special, very special, not as good as the pass that Ramsey made to Theo in the first place, that was brilliant but a very good goal all round I thought and a great relief.

gibbs scores

One nil up and Fenerbahce had to come out a bit more which in turn created more space for Theo and from that point onwards he just got better and better.

Enter the scorer of the second goal and enter the man of the match: Aaron Ramsey’s low pile driver into the corner is the thing that heroes are made of. Wenger said at the beginning of the game: look at our first eleven and show me the players that are available who would improve that. He does seem to have a point, doesn’t he? Never mind all those new spuds, as far as the midfield is concerned Ramsey, Wilshere, Cazorla are all better.

rambo scores

On the subject of the midfield they grew in confidence as the game went on and as the goals went in, Rosicky ran, seemingly tirelessly, showing as much energy if not more than Wilshere, ten years his junior. But that is not to knock Jack; he played well but he is still not fully match fit although this should improve week on week.

Penalty? Yes, Theo brought down in the box allowing Giroud to have his confidence massaged for another game, good pen actually. Three nil, job done.

giroud pen kick

All that is left for me to say is that I thought Szczesny was excellent, the back line were fine, midfield very good, the attack?

Ahhhhhhh, spend some money lol.

ok, off to read the rest of the post

Good match report LB, concise and to the point. And completely unbiased 🙂 Turks were poor, Maireles is a shadow of his former self; Kuyt looked knackered from the start and their national goalie responsible for at least one goal.

Our attack? It could have easily been 5:0.

Koscielny of Polish stock 🙂 Sort of, but he is a tough lad all right

on the plane back to London

  3. LB – the official term for the colour of our shorts is Dark Obsidian – glad to help clear that up and thank you for your report,

Well done to the lads for not buckling in the face of a hostile atmosphere – at least initially.

I hope all our supporters got back safely.

    Up the Arse.

    hm, my comment disappeared 😦

not important anyway – in a nutshell: good post LB, thanks, Kozzer ok

  5. There you go Evonne, your comment retrieved. 🙂

  6. Eddie's avatar evonne says:

thank you Chary 🙂 like I said, nothing of importance

What stood up for me was Wenger’s reactions. If anybody still thinks that he doesn’t care and does his job only for the money, I suggest that they watch him closely at last night’s game

But, like Irish famously said ‘now le chequebook out please’

  7. I thought it was nice to see that pic of Kozzer that was on Twitter last night, he is a tough lad Evonne.

And a quick shout out to Birmingham Villa – you benefited from a couple of shocking decisions last Saturday so I have no sympathy for you getting a couple against you last night -ha-dee-ha-ha !

  8. LB's avatar LB says:

This might sound a bit odd coming from me but I don’t believe a single word Wenger says when it comes to transfers.

You see, to me his comments about transfers are not aimed at us the supporters, they are part of a negotiation on behalf of the club, so I take the comment about the Suarez deal being dead with a large pinch of salt.

That deal will only be dead when the transfer window closes and everything that is said from now until then is just part of a grand negotiation.

  9. Rasp's avatar Rasp says:

Lovely assessment of the game LB. That was a good performance with exceptional play be Ramsey and below par by Cazorla and Wilshere – so we can only get better. I hope the boys can take confidence and carry it on into the Fulham game.

I agree that Sagna is a better CB than RB these days (if that’s what you meant?) and so a utiolity defender who can play RB would reinforce the squad. Since we’ve let 3 CBs go, a defender must be on the radar.

  10. LB's avatar LB says:

    Morning Rasp

I actually disagree that a CB is on the radar and I think I will write a post to explain why.

  11. LB's avatar LB says:

Did you know that France has their own version of Google? I just put “the Suarez deal is dead” in there and asked it to translate, it came back with “we are not paying that much”.

    Very useful tool indeed.

  12. Rasp's avatar Rasp says:

Thanks LB, if we’re not going to bring in a player who can play at CB, why did we even buy Squillaci and Djourou?

  13. Red Arse's avatar Red Arse says:

    Good Report, LB

  14. IanRealGunner's avatar IanRealGunner says:

Chary, I think Dark Obsidian sounds like a tin of very expensive Farrow and Ball paint!!

  15. IanRG – I think that’s a new colour invented by Nike, or one they’ve named in any case.

Sounds like a Star Wars villain to me.

  16. Typical, we win and win well and no bugger wants to come on here and discuss it.

  17. Shard's avatar Shard says:

Maybe they were serious about waiting for the 2014-15 season 😛

  18. Shard's avatar Shard says:

Thanks for the report LB. It took me a while to get used to the dark shorts. Didn’t look like Arsenal. But it didn’t look bad, and I got used to it. If it brings us such results, we should keep wearing them.

I was nervous once the match started, oddly enough because we were playing quite well. And then Fener started getting back into it. BUt I was pleased with the fact that we again took control before halftime.

The second half was very good, although the amount of opportunities the Turks had are a cause for concern.

Ramsey. Very very good performance. Once it was 2-0, I started to relax, and I think the team did too for a while, which is not good. But then I started wishing for a 3rd goal because of what it might mean for our ability to sign players, and they obliged. Pity Jenkinson couldn’t add a 4th, but Volkan looked close to tears already so maybe it’s ok.

  19. Shard, I thought it was just me having a hissy fit about skipping the 13-14 season ha ha.

Anyhoo I’ve got my tickets for me and Chary Minor to go to the Orcs game.

So Arsenal should have not turned up to the game then Racey ? Genius.

  20. GunnerN5's avatar GunnerN5 says:

    LB;

    Thanks for the game report.

After the Villa game and the resulting injuries and negative media coverage I was very concerned about what players would be available for the Fener game and also a tad worried about the teams reaction – could they bounce back or not?.

Well both concerns turned out to be unfounded as we had a fine team available and, as usual, AW had them well prepared.

The result was unexpected and a welcome relief after a few days of hyper negativity. In my mind it vindicates AW’s belief in the quality and the ability of his squad. I simply cannot fathom out how he is able to withstand the continuous onslaught of criticism directed mainly at him – a lesser man would have thrown in the towel long ago.

After the manner in which Villa lost to Chelsea yesterday I have one thing to say to Paul Lambert –

    “What goes around, comes around”

  21. Shard's avatar Shard says:

    LB @ 10.24

I agree. The Suarez deal might or might not be dead. Just because Wenger says so, doesn’t mean it is. I’ll judge the squad once the window closes. It’s not that long to wait anyway.

So, now we move on to our early Saturday kickoff time (which TV station did that?) Can Wilshere handle a 3rd full game in a row? Or will be play Frimpong? What about Rosicky? (Who I thought did a wonerful job coaxing everyone around him to keep pressing) Sagna will drop in at CB I guess, but that leaves us with no cover at all, and you can bet Fulham will be pushing us about. Webb is not the sort of referee who recognises dangerous play anyway..

OK ok. I’ll leave the referees be for now, and maybe even the Fuham game. Transfers? Should we talk transfers that are in the papers today? Yes to Benzema, no to Di Maria. He reminds me of Ricardo Quaresma. Decent player, but hyped no end. Although I don’t watch Madrid much, so I could be wrong.

  24. chas's avatar chas says:

    Cheers, LB.
You can certainly knock a quick one out.

I didn’t like the blue short arrangement to begin with but as we played well, I grew to like it. Red shorts would have been worse as we’d have looked like the dippers.

I’ve always liked the idea of an inverse kit. White shirts with red sleeves and red shorts. I do like the new away kit though.

  25. chas's avatar chas says:

Updated assists sent to nuts, Rasp.

  26. GoonerB's avatar GoonerB says:

Excellent report LB. Our thoughts seem to be in tandem. Being in greece at the moment as you would expect all the locals were gunners for the night.

It was an excellent away performance in a difficult place to go. We had to bide our time and remain patient and concentrate and for me that was a mature and professional performance of high calibre. Of course it being from arsenal the media will talk of fernebaches shortcomings. If it was utd chelski or citeh it would all be about what a powerful european force they are.

I like a team that can share the goals but there id still something not quite prolific enough goals wise with our front 3 combinations. I feel more than anything else we still need a prolific front man with a bit of majic in them to get silverware this year. Fingers crossed for the next 2 weeks.

  32. GunnerN5's avatar GunnerN5 says:

    Rasp,

That’s right enough I guess people are still in the wait and see mode, still not daring to believe. Well I must admit to being pleasantly surprised by how strongly we played against Fener and it was a relief not having to read more trash talk. if we had lost the airwaves would have been inundated with the “know it all” commentators.

Now lets just wait and see how many rabbits AW pulls out of the hat!

  33. GunnerN5's avatar GunnerN5 says:

I still feel that the League Championship is out of our reach because regardless of the players we bring in they will still need time to settle into the squad especially if they do not have any EPL experience. Getting into the CL places will also be tricky as 4th place will be a tight race between ourselves Liverpool and Tottenham, but it should prove to be exciting.

  34. GunnerN5's avatar GunnerN5 says:

  35. TT's avatar TT says:

GN5, … hm, I thought I saw evidence after your 1:40 pm that proved you might be wrong with that remark, but it disappeared into the ether. Anyway…

Thanks for the excellent report, LB. As you say, the critics were just waiting for a failure last night. The team withstood the negativity. I really enjoyed watching the match yesterday, although I was nervous during most of it.

Ramsey’s pass, and the subsequent success of Theo’s cross took me by surprise. Didn’t think Ramsey could thread that ball in; but he did. Then I thought surely the linesman would flag offside; but he didn’t. Then I thought, oh no, Theo would just try another tough angle shot/chip; but not that either. Ah ha! It was another silly cross with no one at the receiving end; but there was! Wonderful.

  36. dandan's avatar dandan says:

GN5 with luck Arsene has now lanced the boil; the journo’s having come unstuck once will hold their fire until the window closes before making any more rash judgements.
Fulham are not easy but I suspect we will be ok there. The CL is taken care of after yesterday’s performance and will allow some players to be rested. Prior to the spuds game. At least that is a home fixture and our neighbours could be tempted to play some of their new recruits who will likely have no idea of the intensity of that local derby.
If Arsene runs true to form he will have his new players, and is unlikely launch them from the start, but though our bench will look impressive, as Kelsey would have it AW will stick to his formula, set his alarm clock and make changes at the normal times, accidents permitting that is.
At the risk appearing boastful I have to admit to finding a high degree of pleasure in the general acceptance at last of Theo and Aaron as players of quality, given how I and others have defended them on here in times past against the sustained denigration of them both

  37. gus's avatar gus says:

You always feel so much better after a win!!!

I admit that I was a little worried and frustrated earlier in the week but when I heard that Ramsey, Rosicky, Gibbs and Sanga would all play I was relieved and I went into the game fully confident. (but I always think we’re gonna win)

We have a 1st eleven that could compete for the league BUT how often do you get to play your first eleven. That’s why we need better depth. I don’t think we need 5 players.

I predict 3 signings: 0 ‘keepers, 1 defender (surely, but not a rumour in sight!) 1 midfielder, and 1 striker. Let’s see if I’m right.

  38. gus's avatar gus says:

I’d love Sanogo to turn into the new Henry! I don’t know what people would say

LB. Thank you for the summation, always a good read when you are “in the chair”.

I think Arteta may struggle to get in the team should all 4 MF’s stay fit (big if…) Of course, JW will need to take time out but finally we have a proper MF that even with rotation remains strong and competitive.

The kick on Kos was a red card. offence. If Nani got sent off for doing something similar then so should the Fener player. I am sure he did not mean to hurt Kos but it was dangerous play.

  40. chas's avatar chas says:

I know it falls into the conspiracy theory category, but I’d lay money on an Arsenal player being sent off if he’d done that last night.

  41. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gooner In Exile says:

Afternoon all, fine write up LB of a fine performance.

Whilst much is being made of Fenerbache’s performance I can recall a couple of years back Braga, where we didnt impose our authority and lost/drew(?) from a winning position.

Think we were strong in most areas last night, and the experience of our lads at this level and in these games saw us through.

  42. chas's avatar chas says:

I think we lost 0-2 to Braga.

  43. Shard's avatar Shard says:

    BR

I too think that deserved a red card, but as it is, I think it turned out better for us that only a yellow was given. The story that would have been told of the game would have been that Arsenal only beat a team with 10 men. We would have had a lot more comments on the blog though 🙂

  44. Shard's avatar Shard says:

The Braga game had some bad refereeing. I remember Vela being denied a clear penalty. In fact, I think he was booked for it. There was more, but how much awful refereeing can a brain file away…

Braga’s stadium though, is fun. A wall of rock behind one goal.

  45. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gooner In Exile says:

0-0 is a winning position for Arsenal 😀

Fine report LB (and reflects the game I saw).

Given some of the appalling vitriol dished out to Ramsey over the last 18 months I can only say how grateful I am that he did not throw in the towel and move elsewhere.

We have a fine young player on our hands who will get better and better.

  47. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gooner In Exile says:

I actually thought the yellow was harsh as he had no idea Koz was going to put his head there when he started his movement.

There certainly wasn’t enough intent to be red.

    dandan,

It’s just nice to get some respite from the moaning minnows. I don’t understand why or how Arsenal become the whipping boy’s of English football, how do you think occurred?

  50. fatgingergooner's avatar fatgingergooner says:

The problem I have with our front 3 is its lopsided.

Theo is now a 20 goals/10 assists man from the right, but we need a similar threat from the left. Cazorla and Podolski contributed brilliantly last season, but I still think we need someone quicker and trickier out there. Maybe Gnabry can do it in future, but he’s not ready yet. If we can get someone like Di Maria out there with Cazorla more central, then I think we would have a larger goal threat and better balance. Even more so if we pick up a finisher to swap with Giroud.

  51. Eddie's avatar evonne says:

ginger – I seem to have a problem with di Maria, but cannot remember why. What has he ever done to us?

  66. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT's avatar TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

    Very good post LB

There was a lot to like from yesterdays performance, and of course the result itself was vital

What fascinates me is the development of the young British core. 18 months ago Theo & Ramsey were not good enough, and Gibbs was to injury prone to be our first choice left back

Jack and Ox were given much more slack, probably becuase they have more “exciting” ability which has a tendency to excite. They will become great players, but as yet are still a bit behind the others in there development

Jenks is at very early stages, but also has very nice potential.

My point is this. How many big club managers have the foresight in the modern game and more importantly the paitence, to build a new team based on such a young core in the obvious knowledge that you have to suffer first before you get results?

This is why those who disrespect Wenger or the Clubs strategy, will never get any respect from me, because as far as ime concerned, they are clueless.

Yes, we need some top players via the transfer market, all clubs do. but Arsenals future is a great one, and last night the evidence was on the pitch.

  67. fatgingergooner's avatar fatgingergooner says:

There are still deals out there that could make this a very constructive window for Arsenal. Plus we’ve trimmed the fat off the squad and saved a fortune in wages. I pray Wenger gets the deals done.

  68. fatgingergooner's avatar fatgingergooner says:

    TMHT,

Do you still think a team that is developed together over a few years can still compete with teams that are bought? AW did it, SAF done it a few times, and Klopp did it last year, but do you think it’s starting to swing towards the money teams?

SAF gone and Dortmunds been dismantled. Do you reckon AW still believes in building a team over years or do you think it’s just out of necessity because we don’t have the money to buy a squad?

  69. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT's avatar TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

Yes i do Ginge, and i think its more than necessity. In fact i will go further. Who ever can pull this feat off at the top level will in terms of long term success gain a distinct advantage over there rivals.

This is even more important to Arsenal than there main competitors. Chelsea and City know who they are. There fundamentals are built on big name player purchases. With Utd, they have a history and culture and a nice balance between big names and giving youth its chance. They are also the most succesful, all should take note of that.

We have lost our soul a bit. The move has resulted in an earthquake in all areas of the club. I do not believe Arsenal can do a City or Chelsea, they havemt got that kind of money.

For us to find ourselves again and win Titles we must build our team and hence spirit from within and then of course use our increased resources to add the missing quality via the transfer market.

Oh yes, “The Ghosts of the Thirties are Stirring”

  70. Gooner in Exile's avatar Gooner in Exile says:

I have to agree with Terry, take the last team Wenger was building, in effect it became too good a little too early (ie before we could add the one or two players to take it to the next level) and the stars of that team Cesc, Nasri, BSR moved on along with some others.

He is trying again, this time we have a bit more money to reward those players who we want to build the team around, and a bit extra to invest in additions to help the team along should it be needed.

  71. fatgingergooner's avatar fatgingergooner says:

I agree that the past shows a squad built has longer success than a squad bought. Dortmund were proving that up until the summer. Wenger is obviously a believer in it, otherwise the £70m would’ve been long gone by now. What I do worry about though is what makes this team any different from the likes of the Cesc, Denilson, Clichy, Adebayor etc side that we all had high hopes about? Nationality maybe? Personally, I believe this new crop have a better chance due to the fact the Invincibles shadow has long gone. I just hope Wengers previous exploits isn’t what’s holding these new players back.

  72. Shard's avatar Shard says:

I too agree with Terry and GIE. Also, I remember Wenger saying that we want to have a large percentage of our squad from within our academy. I can’t remember the percentage but it was something like 70%. If you take a squad of 30 players, that means Wenger aims to have 21 players from the academy. That is an ambitious statement.

If we can produce so many players for us through the academy (these days this includes players from all over the world) then not only will that give us an identity, it’ll mean we can save the money in transfers to compete with the biggest teams for the best players.

  73. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT's avatar TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

Ginge, i think GIE answered your question. I would also add that the British thing makes it more likely they will stay.

But of course i could be completely wrong and talking crap, it has been known. hahaha.

Its difficult to predict the future, but i like Arsenes plan and as a fan back him to bring it to fruition.

  74. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT's avatar TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

    Nice one Guru Shard

  75. Shard's avatar Shard says:

Szcz, Gibbs, Jenkinson, Wilshere, Ramsey, Theo, Ox. (According to rules, the last two count as our academy products) That’s 7, who all can easily be there for the next 5-6 years.

If you add 4 more world class players to complete the first 11. And add 5 or 6 more players of good quality from outside, you have the core of a very good squad of about 17.

With players already on the fringes like Coquelin, Miquel, Ryo, Zelalem, Akpom, Gnabry etc., and who knows who all further down who might shine in the next 3 years or so, I don’t think that was just a throwaway comment from Wenger. It won’t be easy. Young players don’t always develop like you would think, and getting the balance right is important, but it can be done, or got close to.

  76. fatgingergooner's avatar fatgingergooner says:

Sometimes I think Wenger looks a little too far in to the future. ‘I don’t want to buy a replacement for Cesc because I’ve got a 17 year old Wilshere coming through’ etc. this is something we’ve seen on a few occasions. Look at our goalkeepers right now! Hopefully he’s learnt his lesson and realises that a Gnabry or an Akpom are not ready right now and will only improve further if we sign a world class striker or a top class winger.

I still believe he’s the right man for the job and the plan we’ve talked about us the right way to go, but it won’t work unless the superstar players are in and around the likes of Ramsey, Ox, Wilshere, Gibbs etc

Very true Ginge. No club, from Rochdale up to Arsenal, can acheive its aims without bringing players in.

I understand what you mean about looking to far ahead, there are so many variables that plenty can go wrong.

Its a fine balancing act and a very delicate process that Wenger is embarking on. Lets hope he pulls it off.

It wasn’t always the case. Brady was quite upset with Wenger not giving youngsters a chance. He sold Matthew Upson, who I thought was a good prospect, while he kept Martin Keown. He was all but set to sell Ashley Cole, if not for Sylvinho’s passport issues. Bentley felt like he won’t get a chance. Stuart Taylor had a winners medal with us, but Lehmann still came in. (Brady rated Stuart Taylor highly)

I think it was only in the years that the building of the stadium started to become more of a reality that he decided to go in the direction of building with the youth and nurturing them through, rather than giving just the odd precociously talented youngster a chance.

We then saw the likes of Djourou, Song, Cesc, Denilson, Bendtner all come in, trained, and so many of them given so many chances, while a lot of the older players were let go. We still got close to winning the league at least twice (2008 and 2011) and maybe thrice (2010) but fell short.

It can be done. A bit more money to supplement them, a bit more ‘luck’, and a bit more belief maybe, and it can be done.

It’s not a vision borne just of romanticism though. It is probably the best way to compete now, even if the philosophy was initially framed out of necessity.

When did Wenger say that he wasn’t able to spend the money on players he wants. Show us the interview in which he said that or the quote maybe?

Wish I was still on twitter because GM’s comment would’ve hit double figures for retweets! Quality.

I actually attended a NYC meeting about 10 years ago when we were playing a Greek team away. the only problem with the pun was they also were showing the Chelsea game on a side TV for some of their mob. But its a nice pub, assuming its held at the same place.
Any Toronto based gooner know if they still hold the TO suypporters meeting at the Duke near Yonge/Bloor? I used to work near there and spent several afternoons in out of office meetings on CL days.

    neaman,

You must mean the Duke of Gloucester, my daughter served behind the bar to help fund her university tuition. Not high on my list of pubs in fact it was quite average – but I’m going back a few years..

  86. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gooner In Exile says:

According to the BBC we are going to re sign Flamini.

    Very interesting.

I don’t hold a grudge that many do as for me he was a little bit harshly done by Arsenal….he wasn’t getting a game because Gilberto was in front of him, Gilberto got injured and suddenly Flamini showed his full potential, but by then it was too late he was already running down the last year of his contract and being offered silly money compared to what we were paying.

A 2 year contract for a 29 year old with plenty of CL experience could be just what we need to fill a gap.

  87. LB's avatar LB says:

Don’t forget we tried to sell him to Birmingham too.

  88. chas's avatar chas says:

I hear Hleb is available, too. 🙂

  89. LB's avatar LB says:

Cover for Arteta, can’t be bad, ok I would prefer someone who could seriously challenge him but Flamini seems like a good second choice.

We are never going to charge Chary’s mind though. lol

god, at that rate we will be chasing Gilberto next. And Lehman

  95. Mmmmmnnn as I suspected…… nothing waiting to be published, anyone got anything they want to put up?

We tell the world we have money and then sign a forward no-one’s heard of on a free and then re-sign a player that shafted us and is not good enough for Milan also on a free … I despair
