Champions League dilemma

Despite finishing third and having the luxury of going straight in to the Group Stages of the Champions League, on Saturday night there is the very real prospect of Chelsea becoming the first London team to win the Champions League.

Chelsea beating Bayern would ordinarily be reason enough for us to throw ourselves off the nearest bridge but this year it will bring some pleasure as the cretins down the road will be crying off to play their European football on Channel 5.

Last Sunday brought the surreal thought that I’d actually like United to win the league. However that thought evaporated when I watched Fergie’s face go from exited puppy to dejected alchy just finding out the corner shop was out of Special Brew in fact i rewound and played back several times after they showed it on MotD. I didn’t watch the City celebrations, who would want to?

I recommend you all do the same on Saturday night, a Chelsea win will see me heading over to a Spuds blog to watch the toys fly out of the pram and watch Arry be kicked from pillar to post. A Chelsea loss and I will be glued to my screen watching Drogba cry in Terry’s arms, and thinking I wonder if Mata made the right choice (and how much can we have him for). I have never laughed louder than when Terry missed that potential match winning spot kick against United in 2008, especially because of the way he straightened his armband as he walked up.

Schadenfreude at times like this it’s all you’ve got.

  1. Here’s my colours nailed firmly to the mast ……..

Chavs to definitely not win tonight

Spuds to celebrate the chav loss – which they will with great vigour – and then to not qualify themselves hahahahahaha

  2. Mr Wenger, just keep on criticizing them and let them be satisfying their fans and players and be also satisfying only one group guess what- your employers alone. You are just selfish.

  3. bradster says:

Damn that’s a lot of letters for glee! But I have to agree, either way will make me happy.

  4. Red Arse says:

Interesting GIE, short and sweet indeed! 🙂

Chelsea to win for me. Spuds OUT.

Look the Chavs will spend really big this summer – ditching quite a number of current squad players — and losing or winning the CL won’t make much difference.

If Spuds are not in the CL they will indeed be in difficulties leeping/recruiting players.

By the way all this adulation of ‘loyal’ Brendan Rodgers makes me smile.

Is this the same Rodgers who In November 2008 was appointed as Watford manager, and then a few months later dumped them to grab the ‘better’ Reading manager’s job in June 2009.
Then demanded to be allowed to leave Reading in December 2009, so he could take up the even better Swansea City job in July 2010.

Yup, sounds a real decent ‘one club’ man loyal as hell!

Ah, well, OK he would have been if he had not weaselled his way into 3 clubs in a little over 18 months, if you don’t include his Chelsea coaching role, coz that would make it 4.

    Short memories? 🙂

  5. Big Raddy says:

I am looking forward to an entertaining game. As in BM scoring early and forcing Chavs to play football and not park the bus.

On a side issue, it is completely stupid to have what is the biggest game of the season played without the best players of the teams. That both sides have to play without 4 of their best players ruins it.

They should cancel any yellow cards and have 1st X1 v 1st X1. (even if it includes JT).

  6. 26may1989 says:

    FORZA BAYERN!!

    And down with RA!! 🙂

I know I should be all zen about these things, but my hatred of Chelsea is way too powerful to want anything other than a humiliating defeat for the Chelsea Pensioners, consigning them to Thursday night football next season and denying them that precious honour of being the first European champions from London.

Anything less than 3-0 to Bayern, preferably with Robben scoring, and I’ll be disappointed. But I have a horrible feeling that those SW5 bastardos will triumph tonight.

I don’t agree yellow cards from the SFs should be cancelled, that would just incentivise players to go for yellows, since there would be no consequences. But the number of yellows in the knock-out rounds before a ban should be relaxed from two to three.

  7. jnyc says:

Im going for bayern. Dont appreciate chelseas ugly style, matas choice also. He would have been perfect for us. we are still desperate to fill that position. We have alot of work to do ourselves. Not too concerned about spurs going forward.

  8. oz gunner says:

Bayern for me. I know Chelsea will make it a very miserable game to watch unfortunately. RA i like your theory and it would be good to see a host of spurs players jump ship.

This week has left me feeling as though i’ve gone back in time a few years! Simply because the media is going on about Drogba as though he is the best striker in the world! Gomez and Bastian to score for me (would love those two at the gunners!)

  9. TotalArsenal says:

Nice discussion starter GiE. For me, 100% Bayern tonight. The Chavs are in free-fall this season, but somehow – through squeezing the last bus-juice out of the Chelsea pensioners – they find themselves in the final of the CL. Lose that, and they play in the EL, on Chavnel Five, and their free-fall continues. Despite all the money they can spend, they have to find a manager that makes Chelsea go back to the top again, and that wont be easy. Could this be the start of demise of the first oil-for-cups baron? Yes, please, yes please! 🙂

  10. I love AFC but i still want Chelsea to win so that AFC can understand that they have not been fair to their fans and players. Is it not indicative enough through the exits(Fab, Nasri and co). Now RVP, is Wenger not blindly stubborn to understand that he is failing the fans and players? The players are not handsomely paid like their peers elsewhere at the top level in EPL neither are they hopeful of any silverware, So what AFC should expect to happen is massive quality exodus.

  11. TotalArsenal says:

    Hi RA 🙂

That is a good observation about Rodgers. It is not loyalty to the club that is driving him but loyalty to his capabilities and self-respect/confidence, it seems.

What I love about him is his confidence. I believe he said something like: ‘I don’t want to be interviewed, our last game against Liverpool is as good as an interview’. For me, that is class. He will go all the way to the top with such an attitude!

  12. goonermichael says:

Raddy I have to disagree totally. If that were the case the semi final would be a free for all. Terry had a straight red. The fact that he is allowed onto the pitch is disgraceful. Come on Bayern !! Smash those fucking chav bastards.

  13. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

Thanks GiE, got be Munich for me. I openly admit my jealousy that Chelsea are in the final and we arnt. I shall not watch the game, means nothing to me Vienna.

Of course, if Chelsea do pull it off it will be victory complete for the suger daddies. City the league and Chelsea the champions league. So city wiil have seen off the all mighty Utd, and Chelsea the likes of Barca. And what has that fool Wenger done about it apart from conning the supporters? finnishing a measly third thats what. This is not accetable for a club of Asenals stature. Forget the likes of Utd, Madrid and Barca. We should be wiping the floor with the likes of city and chelsea, and its all the boards and Mug wengers fault. Bring in Rodgers (Redders hahaha) or that Lambert geezer, they will soon sort this suger daddies out.

All that bloody money we spend on tickets were just getting conned. Allowing Cesc and Nasri to leave was a joke, why didnt we pay them 200k per week. Now RVP wants to leave and who can blame him. he knows hes getting conned to, 130K a week, thats an insult. Give him 250k a week imediatly Wenger you mug. Buying Poldoski?, who the hell is that?, why dont they show some ambition and get that Messi bloke. Theres a lack of fight and spirit in this crap team Wenger you mug. Youve only got to look at the Totnumb 5-2 game, who are better than us and should have come third, to see that.

Were getting conned but you lot cant see it. Why dont you all just wake up and see it for what it is.

  14. we don’t have to be jealous

  15. TotalArsenal says:

Hahahahaha Terry 🙂 You are in bullish form – are you back on carrot-salads again? 😆

  16. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

emmanuel, your write about wanting Chelsea to win. Hopefuly that will wake the mugs who run our club wake up, stop conning us and get some ambition. Go Chelsea.

  17. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

Just sick of been conned TA. Thats why we got to want Chelsea to win so idiots like Kronke realize we need ambition. Go Chelsea.

  18. Sweeps says:

Who cares? All we need to know about is how fragile our team is not being able to beat QPR, Norwich, Wigan in the run in and a lucky win against WBA thanks to their goalkeeper. Great we’re in the champions league but we will get knocked out early. What’s the point. Just another 20million to line the pockets of the board.

  19. SharkeySure'sGhost says:

TMHT – sterling work my friend but I fear you are soaring way over the head’s of quite a few.

I’l wait and watch to see who comes on to agree with your every word.

Post that on LG and you’ll be invited to be a paid co-author !!

  20. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

Thats true Sweeps. Utd lost to wigan and chelsea to QPR, but who cares, we should be wiping the floor with these teams. Wake up Wenger you mug. Go chelsea.

  21. SharkeySure'sGhost says:

GiE. If I could set aside my desire to see Chelsea lose, then I would wholeheartedly love to see the Spuds knocked out of the CL tonight, meaning that their players know sooner rather than later that its Thurs night footie for them

However, the double whammy of a Chelsea loss followed by Spuds starting their season in July and pulling a strong team in the qualifiers has to get my vote.

C;mon Bayern, lets see a proper one sided battering tonight !!!

  22. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

No Sharkey, we must want Chelsea to win tonight so those cronies that run our club realize we need ambition to win things. Why cant we buy some one like Mata the way Chelsea did? Because they show ambition and we dont so he went there. Go chelsea.

  23. Makumisky says:

I gave up predicting and wishing and speculating. Why? 30 BBC ‘footballing experts’ gave wrong predictions (117/120) of the top four PL finishers. Only 3 pundits mentioned Arsenal for 4th. And BBC wont sack them. True experts. Soo Bayern vs Chavs? Any of the above. Bring it on….. Hatters!!

  24. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

Off out but before i go, gooooo Chelseeeeee

    Sweep, just for you..:-)

Arsenal survived relegation by one point

There’s not just one League in England anymore, there are two leagues. Symbiotic leagues which feed off each other, enrich each other, and ultimately enrich the billionaires and millionaires who own, operate, and play in those leagues.

In The League you have 20 teams who play each other home and away, are awarded points for wins and draws, and the club with the most points at the end of the season wins a trophy. That League trophy is one of the most difficult things to get your hands on. In the 20 years that the League has existed just 5 teams have won: Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Blackburn Rovers, and Manchester City.

In addition to winners, there are losers: and while the winners get a trophy, the losers get kicked out of the League.

There’s also prize money awarded to each team in this League. Each place that a team finishes up the table in the League earns £755,062 cumulative. The winners receive £15m and the losers just £755,000. Already the seeds of inequality are planted. Not only do the losers get kicked out of the League but they receive a pittance in prize money.

This League has, however, a soft spot. There are lucrative domestic and foreign television contracts which are divided equally among all 20 teams to the tune of £32.5m.² In addition, all 20 teams are guaranteed that 10 of their games will be played live on television and thus earn them an additional £5.8m.

Among all of their various prize monies, television contracts, and other awards, the bare minimum that a League team will earn is £39m and the maximum which a team could earn is around £61m.

And if a team is booted out of that League, there’s a “parachute payment” of £15m which is given to teams to help them fight their way back into the League. That parachute payment is reduced the year after their first year of relegation and reduced further the year after that but is still a massive payment considering the fact that the league below The League only pays out an average of £1m in prize monies.

For many teams just being in this League is considered a huge achievement. There are two other competitions, cup competitions, that teams play in at the same time as they participate in the League: the Football Association Cup and the League Cup but more important than winning either of those two competitions is staying in the League. It’s even referred to as “survival” when a team avoids relegation because it’s the difference between life and death for some clubs.

This doesn’t mean that winning the FA Cup or the League Cup is completely without merit. Rather that those trophies are considered “stepping stones” to larger, more important trophies such as winning the League. Winning the FA Cup is a stepping stone, staying in the League is survival.

It’s simple math. The difference between surviving relegation from the League and winning the FA Cup is £25m. That’s £25m the club can spend on upgrading their stadium, on buying players, on training grounds, and on making their club better.

But there’s a second league above this League. A super league if you will. And unlike the League, it’s not friendly, things aren’t shared equally, and there are no parachute payments for relegated teams. It is pure capitalism: the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and the have-nots are left to rot in the gutter.

Unlike the League, there are 32 teams from the leagues all over Europe and there is no egalitarian home and away play round robin to decide the winners and losers. Teams are only guaranteed 6 games and £6m. In those six guaranteed games there are bonuses that go to teams who win (£700,000 per) or even draw (£350,000 per). Those six games are used to determine who will go into the next round with the top two teams from each group selected to the round of 16. After that, it’s a knockout competition.

Making it to that round of 16 guarantees an additional £2.64m. That round’s prize money alone is more valuable than winning the FA Cup.

The next round is worth £3.3m.

The next round is worth £3.7m.

And if you win, the prize is £7.9m.

The total prize money up for grabs is £363,440,000. But there’s a hidden prize. One more valuable than the prize money. And completely determined by how powerful your league is. This is what this “Champions League” refers to as the “Market Pool”.

That Market Pool prize money is worth £300m and nearly 25% of that money goes to the four teams from The League. And the League winner, the best team in the best league in all the world? The Champions League pays them 8% of the Market Pool money, or nearly £24m. Just for showing up.

All totaled, if a team were to win all 13 of their games in the Champions League and if they were the champions from The League the payout would be £51,477,360.¹ Give or take a few pennies here and there.

Only the top three teams from The League are guaranteed admission to the Champions League. The fourth placed team has to survive a promotion battle between another similarly placed team from a different league in Europe. This is almost exactly the same system that teams from the league below the League use to get into The League.

For a club like Arsenal, who don’t have the backing of a man who is willing to spend £1bn to win the League, achieving third place and thus securing Champions League football is crucial, financially, to ensuring that Arsenal are even remotely competitive in the League. People wonder why Arsene Wenger prioritizes the Champions League over the FA Cup and even more so over the League Cup but it’s really quite simple.

As I illustrated above, almost no team in England would take an FA Cup trophy if it mean that they were relegated from the League because it’s financial suicide. The same applies to the Champions League, except in an even more direct, more cut-throat, more capitalist way: there are no parachute payments to help a team get back into the Champions League.

That’s why Liverpool have struggled for three years to get back in to the Champions League. That’s why Kenny Dalglish was fired. Winning the League Cup is meaningless if you finish 8th to a team like Liverpool who have aspirations of winning the League and getting back into the Champions League. That’s why Arsenal’s 15 consecutive years of Champions League football is a massive achievement. And that is why Arsene Wenger sat on the bench last Saturday, clutching Pat Rice, and looking like a manager whose team was on the verge of relegation.

    Because they were.

Times have changed in The League. The old days when winning the FA Cup meant something have all but disappeared. At most it’s seen as a stepping stone to bigger and better things as Manchester City used it last year. But a manager would certainly never risk relegation from the Champions League places to win it.

Remember that next time someone tells you they would rather finish 8th and win the FA Cup: 8th place is relegation.

I have been cycling up the sides of mountains.

    Excellent post as ever GIE

GM’s final sentence at 11.56 perfectly sums my view on tonight’s game.

  27. richie says:

Bayern all day long! Because just thinking of the image of John Terry holding up the cup is enough to make me wanna lose me lunch. So should that image turn all Gooners stomach’s, of all people to get to lift it not Terry please! I too was faced with a horrible dilema last weekend. I didn’t want Taggart and Co to lift yet another league title (6 ahead of is us enough)! But I really didn’t want the Mercenary Marseillaise Nasri to get anything other than what he deserves “Nada”!!! I knew he’d “Diss us” even before he did because typically I knew he wouldn’t have the class not to.
Bayern is not a club I hold dear in anyway but I’ll be over the moon if they deprive Chelski of CL next season. Arry the twitcher and his band of bog dwellers offer to us a useful ruler with which to measure ourselves, they should be used as the sort of incentive we need to push on. They’ve only spent slightly more than us in recent years so the comparison are fair when compared to Chelski Manu’er Liverpool and Money Citeh.

  28. evonne says:

GiE – I am with you all the way – we cannot lose tonight. One way or another we’d have a lot of fun 🙂

Chavs’ ambition could suffer tonight, but Scum would feel in in their pockets and the likes of Modric and Bale would walk away this summer. One opponent less to worry about next season

  29. Norfolk Gooner says:

Terry is so desperate to get on the pitch tonight, I hear he offered (begged) to be allowed to be the Chavs mascot and walk out holding hands with Lampard.

Chelsea to win, otherwise Premier League could be in danger of losing one place, after the poor showing in this years competition. Both lots of Mancs early exit didn’t help.

  30. Makumisky says:

    Evvone, some money sense there.

  31. Red Arse says:

Terry, my despairing friend, your irony will never get thru’ to those who do not share your life view. 🙂

Who would I choose to watch a match with?

Well, there is Terry with his optimism and enthusiasm in supporting the club he so wholeheartedly loves, warts and all, come hell or high water, and who cheers everyone up with his demeanour.

And then there are those who choose, out of ignorance of the facts, to castigate our manager, who ignore the ludicrous handicap of the financial imbalance imposed on every club not funded by a Russian oligarch or an oil magnate, and who just love to moan and pontificate about the injustices of ‘supporting’ a team of ‘status’ who ‘only’ manages 3rd in the toughest league in the world, and elight in depressing the rest of us with their constant snivelling.

    Tough one to call!

I will however choose Terry, only because he has the biggest telescope! 🙂

    P.S. Hiss to 26M —- just coz I feel like it!! 🙂

  33. Red Arse says:

    Richie,

    Like your thinking.

The spuds have recently spent north of £130m compared with our £10m surplus (profit) on transfers.

My figures are somewhat sketchy, (I could not be arsed to look them up again) but they have been published on here before, so I am sure someone will have the accurate ones somewhere, if you need them. But I agree with you, in principle. 🙂

  34. Red Arse says:

    Hi ya, TA. 🙂

I like the way Swansea play, and Rodgers deserves credit for that, so I agree with you as far as that goes.

However, he seems to be like so many others in football, out for himself! I think the Watford and reading fans might agree with me on that! 🙂

By contrast, there is our distinguished, much maligned, self effacing manager who has turned down Real Madrid and Barcelona on more that one occasion, to stay with us, despite being offered twice what he earns — yes, earns — at Arsenal. [That comment is not for you oh, mighty Dutch Adonis — it is for those who should know better!] 🙂

  35. Big Raddy says:

    26. Your suggestion regarding the yellow’s is much better than mine. As others have said – there would be no penalty for foul play in the semi’s.

As the man in the Orthopedic shoes said ………. I stand corrected 😀

  36. Big Raddy says:

TMHT. Let’s be clear. Are you hoping for a Chelsea win so that Mr Wenger will wake up and spend the money he has made by not spending our transfer budget?

At last someone else has realised that AW has a deal with the Board to get 25% of all money save and in Cash.

After all, it is the Arsenal Way.

  37. TotalArsenal says:

    Hi RA,

Over the last twelve months I have become a tat more cynical with regards to loyalty. Your points re Rodgers’ loyalty to his previous clubs are valid, and maybe he is just being human i.e. seek for the best he can get for him.

I was queueing in our local chippy yesterday (a constant queue of 15 or more customers – licence to print money, as we discussed recently!), and in comes a man wearing proudly a yellow Canary shirt. An old man next to me, who seemed a bit deranged, asks the proud, glowing Canaries fan when the next game of Norwich is. The guy says, I don’t know to be honest, the season has just finished. Then another guy, holding his phone in front of him, says: Holt has handed in a transfer request, but it has been rejected by the club. You should have seen the face of the Canaries fan: from a ‘isn’t the world a wonderful place for us Canaries’ to ‘ooh no, there are very dark clouds over Carrow Road’ in just a semi-second. BOOOM. The illusion of loyalty shattered. The guy holding his hand-held device then says: I wonder if Holt knows Lambert is leaving…. Angst, angst, angst, and the face of the Canaries fan looks even more depressed… We Gooners are not alone with our worries and anxieties. 😦

  38. TotalArsenal says:

Raddy: ‘As the man in the Orthopedic shoes said ………. I stand corrected’ 🙂

  45. Who invaded TMHT’s body? 😉

  46. van Persie to Liverpool!!!!!! Where on earth did that come from? Surely we’ve shown more desire than Liverpool this season ……..

  47. TotalArsenal says:

Personally what would i do with the Robin ‘situation’?

I would refuse to talk to him about anything other than signing a new contract, if he did not want to sign a new contract i would say “ok, stay out the remaining one year on your contract and go for a free at the end of it””

This would make him really think … hey if i get a serious injury in the season i will be left with no club no money coming in and any other club will not dare to take a chance on signing me until ive recovered and got fitnees back.. and then who in there right mind would sign me on £ 250 000.00 a week at 30 years of age and without first team football for a while and without yet proving your still a top top player.

Possibly force him to sign back with us?

I am sorry if you think this is harsh but some times you have to be strong with those you love to prove your love and commitment to someone.

    Gooner Jake

The problem is not that your suggestion is harsh the problem is that it is impractical.

If Van Persie is refused a move he will mope around for the whole of the next season and that lack of enthusiasm will have a negative effect on the squad.

We have to simply be calm, bide our time and hope that neither Barcelona or Madrid put in a serious bid for him because if they don’t he will be grateful of the offer that the club present to him and with that gratitude will come the all important enthusiasm that will take him into next season.

I take it you have a middle parting then !. If you lose one of the strands, you can either spike it up, grease it back elvis style or have it as a fringe, but if you have a fringe dont have it too long, as it might get in your eyes and you could miss a goal at the ems !. 🙂

  63. MickyDidIt89 says:

Absolutely Bayern tonight. Chavs on thursday night would be brilliant. We’ll deal with Spurs later.

  64. Rasp says:

Yep Bayern obviously 🙄 for all the reasons mantioned by others. Wish I’d put a poll in to see the split …… come to think of it, I’ll put one in now …. come back in 5 mins

  65. Rasp says:

OK, go to the top of the page and place your vote. The poll system only allows one vote from every computer/device.

  66. Adfternoon all.

GiE – we have to be brave and hope our 2-part best case scenario works, Bayern win and Spuds botch up the Pre-qualifiers, so Thursday night footie for both of them(but we know Twitchy will send out the Tea ladies and under 12’s for the Europa again to preserve his first team).

Sadly my sporting Saturday is not going well so far, my IPL T20 crashed out of the tournament in the stunning surroundings of Dharamsala and Big Fat Sam is back in the Premier league.

Come on Bayern, make us smile at that chav front bottom JT crying in Munich at 9.45.

PS love the “excited puppy to dejected alchy” line about my favourite person, GiE – I rewound that bit as well and the look of total befuddlement on Phil jones’ face was hilarious too. 🙂

  67. glic says:

    Rasp
This is a hard one to vote on, I shall take my time, It`s a bit like asking me which Lezzers do I want a threesome with, the two from Northern Ireland or the two from Southern Ireland, or out of Adebayor and Nasri, who do I kick in the bollix !. Time out, I`ll come back to It.

  68. Anup says:

I watchd city celebration,i always watch champion celebrating at the end of the season.
Watching ppl happy is never a bad thng.
Afterall if u mock an arrogant fan he becomes even more bothersome but if u jst acknowledge him he goes away. Not applicable in football i think.

  69. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Rasp,
Just voted and noticed that RA has 4 devices!!! Little snake

  70. glic says:

I`m still mulling this over in my brain, Adebayor or Nasri ?. I need more time.

  71. MickyDidIt89 says:

I wasn’t going to bother watching, but the more I think about Chelsea on Channel 5, the more excited I have become.
    Will definately watch.

  72. glic says:

The 2 from Northern Ireland or the 2 from Southern Ireland ?

  73. glic says:

One problem has been sorted, with the current exchange rate, the Soutern Ireland one`s are going to be cheaper. Right Adebayor or Nasri ? and Bayern or Chavs ?, more time needed !.

  74. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

Cornwall, kick Adebarndoor, Nasri has nothing to kick, hes more likely to be one of them lezzers.

    Afternoon/Evening, Rasp, Micky & Charry

Anup, its also joyous watching people suffer.I personaly get orgasmic pleasure from watching Totnumb fans crying hehehe

  75. Rasp says:

Well spotted Micky, but even so Bayern are winning – exactly as I hope they will this evening.

The winner (and runner up) of the CL has to play 18 games apparently, so the spuds going out at the group stage will just mean more injuries and more fatigue for their squad.

  76. Rasp says:

    Hi TMHT,

Did you see the pictures of the city fans crying against QPR when they were 2:1 down with 5 minuts to go? – talk about the highs and lows of football.

We are very lucky Ben Foster got injured because without Fulop’s assists it would be us having the ‘squeaky bums’ this evening.

  77. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

Thats true Rasp. football can be an amazing game, ecstacy to agony within minutes. We were very fortunate to beat Albion, Fulops mistakes were so comical that at one stage i thought Henry Norris had returned from the grave and given him a swift back hander.

  78. glic says:

Right I`ve decided, I`m going with the Germans and hope the Spuds get a really tough Qualifier, but if the Chavs win ,I will still go on a Spud site and laugh uncontrollaby `till I die of laughter, as we say a win, win situation.
    Terry
Hows the 2 strands looking ?
I`m still undecided on Adebayor or Nasri though !.

  79. Hi Mr Syrup – it did look as if Fulop was trying to do us a favour.

He made our departed spanish waiter look world class.

  80. glic says:

    Rasp
To help me decide, could you put up a poll to see who we would rather kick in the goolies, Adebayor or Nasri ?

  81. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

Very nice thank you Cornwall. If i could just force them to multiply i would be a very happy man.

totnumb fans will be watching this match in terror hahahaha. Still want Munich to win though.

  82. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

Chary, on match of the day Lineker the snide actuly mad ne laugh for once, he siad that Fulop deserved to take the L out of his name. hehehe

  83. glic says:

Another Poll, Who will get through the most Andrex tonight, Levy, Redknapp or their Fans ?
Lets call it the Andrex poll !.

  84. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

    I mean the U hehhehe

  85. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

Levy looks like the kind of guy that has to permanatly walk around with a roll of andrex

  86. glic says:

Redknapps dog has just run away with the roll, he`ll have to use a spud shirt instead !

  87. glic says:

    Rasp
Where`s my Poll ?, I`m itching to kick someone in the goolies !.

  88. I remember that one Mr Syrup 🙂

  89. 26may1989 says:

The South wins: out with Blackburn, Bolton and Wolves, in with Reading, Southampton and West Ham.

But this evening, if there is anything good in the world, it has to be Bavaria.

  90. RockyLives says:

    Tough one.

Whoever wins it’s a ‘happy-sad’ outcome for me.

I can’t bear the idea of the Chavs being the champions of Europe, but my instincts agree with Redders: if the Spuds are out of the CL it could be the beginning of the end for them, whereas the Chavs will spend regardless.

  91. goonerjake says:

    To LB

Thank you scincerly for your comment about my post… again thnk you and its okay you dont agree.

I understand what you say and i do appriciate what you say may be very very true.

But this is what I mean….. If I were in charge like I said NO ONE person would be allowed to dictate to THE Arsenal. A line has to be drawn (IN MY OPINION) which says players are not going to be allowed to dictate to this club.

And do you know when that happens other players will realise they CANNOT do as they please because the club is prepared to even make a huge loss (in monetary and maybe as you suggeted in morale terms) to stop them from trying to engineer moves away. It is a form of blackmail players are using.

Bosman has alot to answer for…..Player power is a cancer within the game.

Sometimes being too calm can lead to apathy my friend. Im sure you are not apathetic but unpopular things have to be done.

Again LB thankyou for your responce. Its not important that we disagree on this point what is important is we both care about the club

Cheers and all the very best your fellow gooner.

    goonerjake

  92. SharkeySure'sGhost says:

Whilst I agree Corky, I do believe the spuds have it in them to mess up in the qualifiers.

Lose that and they are going to lose players very very late in the window.

Bottom line is that by finishing 3rd we have already shagged their whole summer. Wait, wait wait…before you know how much you can spend and whether any decent players will be prepared to join you. Then lets see how they do after an uncertain start.

  93. SharkeySure'sGhost says:

Jeez that Bayern team looks strong considering their four (?) suspensions.

Gustavo was great in Madrid, but I just can;t see that as a DM he’s a big miss when playing against a Chelsea side that looks set up to be a parked 747 let alone a bus !

    C’mon Bayern !!!

  94. Huge dose of emotional blackmail coming up but I wonder if Robin has thought about the impact on his young children of them seeing him sitting on the bench at another club 😦

  95. Big Raddy says:

    Chavs 5/1 against over here!

If I didn’t want BM to win, I would certainly have a bet at those odds

  96. Big Raddy says:

Peaches. You underestimate the power of Persie. He would walk into any club’s first team in the world, and that includes RM, MC, Barca.

Shame because your scenario might be a negotiating gambit!

  97. Gooner In Exile says:

Jake I understand both yours and LBs perspective, I think it can work with some players, especially those who become less marketable as they drift out of the limelight.

However I think what LB says is true and you end up with a player costing a squad berth and wages not pulling his weight.

I much prefer Keith Dover’s (from Tuesday Club) solution:

Arsene should call a team meeting get the shirts of rival clubs, p*ss on them and explain to the players that if any of them is linked in the press with any of those clubs they have to wear the shirt to train in.

  98. Gooner In Exile says:

  99. Big Raddy says:

BTW Man Utd won SFA this season. 😀

  100. evonne says:

    Well spotted Raddy 🙂

  101. Big Raddy says:

Please don’t let us witness another Mourinho type win. Only one team is trying to win this game – the other is just waiting for a mistake.

    Chelsea are so damned boring.

  102. Gooner In Exile says:

RA I noted your comments about Rodgers this morning, I always thought he was sacked at Reading.

  103. kelsey says:

Nice of the TV cameras to show the lady picking her nose three times. Must be a fan of Lional Ritchie

  104. ..Kelsey, as in (she says looking at the bogies) “Hello, is it me you’re looking for?”

  105. evonne says:

Kelsey – and then inspecting the finger, how gross!!

yep, only one team turned up for the game tonight

  106. kelsey says:

    I was thinking of
    Three Times a Lady

RVP would have scored two of the three sitters gomes missed.

  107. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

Leaving bias aside what a joke it is that despite several years of spending millions of pounds Chelsea are trying to win the thing by been negative. i mean come on, surely if you have a suger daddy owner you should be the team pressing for victory not the other way round. There tactics are akin to when we play wolves or sunderland, bloody jokers.

  108. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

and who picks there nose like that in a football stadium surrounded by thousands of people? silly cow should be forced to watch that everyday as punishment.

  109. RockyLives says:

I thought you meant the cameraman is blind:
“hello… Is it me you’re looking for?”

  110. Big Raddy says:

  111. Gooner In Exile says:

I’m thinking Bayern will be bidding for RvP tomorrow

  112. evonne says:

creme de la creme my foot

  113. RockyLives says:

    I was pleased BM scored…

But then I thought of all the Spuds fans celebrating and felt a bit sick…

  114. Gooner In Exile says:

    Unbelievable!

  115. evonne says:

Well Rocky, look at it like that – Scum’s CL place is not certain until they go through the qualifying stages. So, there is still chance they will not play in CL.
Chelsea win tonight – they certainly get the trophy.

    Feck, feck, feck

  116. Gooner In Exile says:

    Don’t understand Bayern removing Muller.

I have a lot of time for Muller, mainly because he resists the urge to pull his socks up to his knees so has the look of a 1970’s player.

Chelsea have played for ten minutes and Bayern have looked vulnerable, they could have won this a long time ago if they’d actually attacked from the start.

  117. Big Raddy says:

Mad. Abra must have paid God a lot of money to get this much luck.

    Come on BM.

  118. Gooner In Exile says:

    B*stards!

  122. Red Arse says:

    Micky,

You said earlier I had 4 goes at the vote.

That is absolutely untrue! It was 5 times, and the bloody thing would not let me. I was just carrying out technical studies for Rasp, you understand. 🙂

  123. Gooner In Exile says:

Bayern look tired Chelsea will now benefit as they have conserved energy through midfield.

  124. Gooner In Exile says:

Hope all those people who shout shooooooot at Ems have watched tonight Bayern haven’t benefited

  125. RockyLives says:

Cashley to miss the crucial pen 🙂

  126. Red Arse says:

Have you ever seen a worse performance than Robben’s tonight?

Especially his free kicks, corners and don’t mention that penalty!

  127. RockyLives says:

    Redders
I think Robben has been excellent
(apart from the bits you mentioned 🙂 )

  128. Big Raddy says:

    I am with RL

Lamps, Mikel, Cahill and Cole have been excellent tonight

  129. Big Raddy says:

    What do you think?

    German efficiency v Chelsea’s luck?

  130. Big Raddy says:

    So Luck beats Efficiency 😉

  131. RockyLives says:

  144. Red Arse says:

See, I told you it would be worth the Chavs winning just to see the Spuds reaction.

But I am also a bit sick seeing a money bags team like the Chavs winning — but don’t worry, we will spend a £billion next year too, just to shut up the moaners and so we can compete as a club of our status should —– apparently. 🙄

I love Arsenal just as we are!

  145. Red Arse says:

I think you did well GIE, and gave me a great laugh!! 🙂

  146. Rob Lucci says:

Very very bad time for football, I’m not entirely happy with Chelsea win tonight, because they epitomizes everything that is wrong with football. Park the bus, boring football, money, Terry, etc..

Man City and Chelsea had proved this year that money will inevitably win you cup, and I don’t like the sound of that.

Playing football? Live within your means? Planning? Who gives a shit? Just throw one billion into the pitch and you will win anything sooner rather than later..

Much I like the sound of Spuds playing on Channel 5 next season, I can see in the future more and more club will go into administration..

  147. goonermichael says:

I’ve stopped following jack. He may be a great footballer but he’s a little wanker.

  148. goonerjake says:

There was a time when the Arsenal were critised for playing negative football with chants of boring boring arsenal being sung at us wherever we went.

Now everybody else (some exceptions) parks the bus and plays negative football and get praised for it while the Arsenal get critisised for …. being to cavalier…. not having a plan B …… for not being defensive …… for not seeing out a game etc etc etc.

I hate this negative football that seems to be praised all the time.

The Arsenal can do no RIGHT in the medias eyes.

I watched one of the worst CL finals I have ever seen and as Drogba scored from the spot I switched off the TV. It would’ve been more than I could stand to see John Terry collect the cup. So we won’t be the first team from London to lift the big eared CL cup. (history has been written by Abromovich’s millions once again).

This reminded me of something, we weren’t the first London team to win the double, that bit of history belongs to our near neighbours the Spuds.
Remembering that put a really big “Smile” on my face, because it seems that Chelski’s name really was written on the CL Cup this year. Which means the Tiny Totts won’t play CL football for another year 😀 :0 😆 🙂

I find myself singing the old “Monty Python Classic” “Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life” with the whistling part Do do, do do, do do do do do do do do do 😀 🙂 :0 😆

  151. goonermichael says:

  157. goonermichael says:

  159. GunnerN5 says:

Great to see an English (London) club win the CL, Bayern were the better team but luck was on Chelsea’s side. But best of all is that our noisy neighbours have Europa to look forward to, “ere’s to Arry”.

  160. oz gunner says:

fair go GM. Wilshere says stuff like that about Rio as well. As GiE says if your working your way up into the National fold you have to do right by Terry and Co. As much as i want him to come out and rubbish the hell out of terry it’s not realistic. kill with kindness

  161. goonermichael says:

Bale and Modric will leave the spuds.

  162. goonermichael says:

Wilshire doesn’t have to say that though. He could just shut up. terry was BANNED. He put his fucking shinpads on just to make sure we knew how classless he is. It’s like an art teacher saying “artwise adolf desrves that for the career he’s had” wilshire was showing off jewelry and talking about watches yesterday. I sent him a tweet saying that people struggle to pay for season tickets and he’s lucky he can kick a ball about. as long as he’s our player I hope he does well. i don’t like him though. I can see him fucking off for money. hope I’m wrong

  163. oz gunner says:

I agree he doesn’t have to say it but he sees a different side of terry to us, perhaps behind closed doors he’s helped young jack transition into the team. He’s a complete w*nker as we all know but he may be a good leader football wise.

so he’s not allowed to talk about watches and jewelry because there are people in this world less fortunate than him? That’s faulty logic, he worked hard to get to were he is today. Guess instead of buying an aston martin he should buy a toyota and donate the rest to Rwanda.

  164. SharkeySure'sGhost says:

GM – you’re spot on about that scumbag Terry, and I pray (in spite of all the evidence) that you are proved to be wrong about Lil Jack. I guess I’m hoping he’ll mature as he gets older. Having said that he’s at home as a new dad…and still acting and tweeting like a 14 yr old schoolboy. Hopefully someone at the club has a word.

I saw a clip of Frimpong on Soccer AM…oh dear.

Anyway many thanks for keeping us all informed GM…its a sterling service you provide..likewise GiE.

Oh and (another!) cracking comment from Gooner Jake

  165. SharkeySure'sGhost says:

“he may be a good leader football wise.”

No question about it Oz….Terry’ is as great a leader as he is a scumbag. If a team were playing for my life he would be in it ….as captain.

Its a great spot from GM that Terry changed into full kit (inc shinnies..lol). As classless as they come….his family must be so proud.

Oh they’re all scum…?? Oh ok, I stand corrected…or do I use Randy’s joke about orthopaedic shoes here..??

  166. SharkeySure'sGhost says:

Just read this on a Spertz blog:

“well at least our chums at Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham are having a jolly good season climax.
Did we just become a laughing stock again? Good job Redknapp, good job.”

West Ham good season climax..?? Talk about losing all sense of perspective…..

I fear (know?) we have some Arsenal fans who think like that.

haha I know i felt really clever going over there and having someone correct my spelling! The intelligence level of the blog was low as you’d expect, so to relate to them i had to resort to a mum joke. Then i was called everything under the sun from being 12, to African, to having a small ‘pecker’

Until we meet again spurs fans!

  178. Gooner In Exile says:

If you hadn’t watched the CL Final the stats tell the story perfectly:

    (Bayern – Chavs)

    Goals 1-1
    Shots 33-9
    On Target 7-3
    Off Target 14-3
    Blocked 22-3
    Corners 20-1

Let that be a lesson to all those that would like to see our players shoot more, Chelsea were under far less pressure than they were in Camp Nou because Bayern repeatedly shot from distance and let Chelsea reset up the pitch.

An I the only one with feint hope that now Roman has his prize he will just do one?

one more mention of CL on the telly and I will smash the fecking thing to bits!!!!
They are making it out it was a great final!! what great final, pile of shit

  180. evonne says:

Terry changed to the full strip so he will feature on the photos and can hung the framed pic on his wall. How else would he explain to his kids that he wasn’t on the picture? Well, I was a filthy scumbag and got straight red in the semis?

  181. Red Arse says:

Watching Abramovich celebrate with his wife, can anyone explain to me why that gorgeous woman would want to marry a grandad, three times her age, who looks like a multi-billionaire village idiot?

  182. Gooner In Exile says:

RA 😀 I think it’s the two words before village idiot

  183. MickyDidIt89 says:

    RA,
Some very pleasant ladies marry poor village idiots!

  184. MickyDidIt89 says:

I think GiE may be on to something!

  185. evonne says:

RA – love is blind; she’d marry him even if he was a cashier at Asda. What Abramovitch wants, Abramovitch buys..I think I’m going to throw up

  186. MickyDidIt89 says:

Don’t know if its available online, but watching the last games of the French League today will certainly provide better quality football. Oh, and a whole host of excellent footballers who won’t be joining Spurs 🙂

  187. evonne says:

Are you guys really feeling cheerful this morning? I am sooooo down 😦

  188. Big Raddy says:

A terrible day for football. Not just Chelsea but also Allardyce returning to the PL with his brand of anti-football.

Sadly, the record books won’t say how Chelsea won, just that they did.

    Bum.

  189. Big Raddy says:

    Micky 8.28. 🙂

  190. Red Arse says:

    Watching the ‘famous’ Chelsea supporting chef Aldo Silly on TV this morning. His interview eventually came down to;

“Yes, Chelsea have spent £1billion but we did NOT buy the title!”

I’ll get back to you when I work that one out.

  191. 26may1989 says:

    Morning all.

One word for last night: bollocks.

Beyond that, Rob Lucci at 11.01 and evonne this morning at 8.05 say it all for me. I watched the game at a party in a bar, and the mixed crowd of Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal, United and City fans were as one in wanting Bayern to win. Only the posse of Czech Chelsea fans were swimming in the other direction.

Oh well. Thank buggery we did manage to hold onto 3rd. I feel sorry for the Spuds….. 🙂

If there’s a silver lining beyond that, it’s seeing Drogba be the one at the two crucial moments. He may wear the wrong shirt but I’ve always liked him, from when he was at Marseille when they played Newcastle in the UEFA Cup. I just hope he doesn’t think this CL win would mean he should revise his plans to leave Chelsea.

It’s going to be an interesting summer for Chelsea. They still need to overhaul their squad but will Abramovich want to do that now, especially given FFP?

  192. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Cheer up Raddy,
People quickly forget the one European Cup Wonders and remember only the Madrids, Pools and so on. In other words, we are no longer after the first, simply a whole host of the things to really join the elite!
Hope Arsene is in France today with his very fattest company cheque book.

  193. Rasp says:

    Morning all,

I think we should all consider one thing – how will RvP have felt watching Ashley Cole celebrate the victory? The chav win will not have helped our cause in holding onto RvP. I agree Micky, the club need to make at least one more marquee signing to give Robin the belief that he really does have a chance of ending his career with a trophy or two.

  194. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Rasp,
    “One more”…cough..splutter.
    Oh no, two more 🙂

  195. MickyDidIt89 says:

    26,
Exactly how big was the last gasp Gibbs tackle? Phew for 3rd.

  196. Rasp says:

Haha Micky – it’s gonna be like every other summer. The Robin saga will go on and on, we’ll think we are on the verge of signing a big name and the club will wait and wait and then say we were never interested in the the player.

  197. MickyDidIt89 says:

    No dooming today Rasp 🙂
I can’t see the Robin issue being resolved until after the Euros for injury reasons, but signing at least one good player beforehand I see as critical.

  198. Gooner In Exile says:

Rasp I’d agree if Cashley left last season, he didn’t, RvP if he is only moving for trophies sake will need to consider who would be his best bet to achieve that in one to three years.

If anything Chelsea proved last night that anything is possible in football. People will remember that game and win as much as they recall Porto’s triumph or Greece’s Euro success. There was more luck involved than quality as Neville kept repeating in commentary sometimes your name is just on the cup. Could be us next season, so why shouldn’t RvP look at that game as Ox did and say “I want some of that, and I want it for Arsenal”. He could look at Cesc or Adebayor too.

  199. MickyDidIt89 says:

    26,
I sort of know what you mean about Drogba, but for me his reputation will always be tarnished by his love for a dive.

  200. evonne says:

Cashley, Drogba and Czech won Chavs the trophy. The rest were shite
I don’t feel sorry for Spurs, but I think they deserve to be in CL more than the winners of the competition

  201. Gooner In Exile says:

I think tho I agree we need one good signing, two if Robin goes, and two or three squad refreshers.

Cahill and Luiz are CL winners….whats right in the world?

  202. Rasp says:

I was calling for us to sign Drogba last summer when his future at chelski was unsure. The chavs may have won by grit and determination but they have the big personalities that can do that, we tend to enlist a different type of player.

We need more power in our side – M’Vila would be ideal.

  203. LB says:

I am struggling to come to terms, now that have we have concrete evidence, that there is not a god. Oh the pain.

  204. MickyDidIt89 says:

    By the way,
Just looked at liveonlinefootie schedule, and its Test Match Cricket all day, no French League. Also, they are selling new season tickets from June 1st. Renewals from May 21. Bargain. My last one was £27/yr.

  205. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Jeepers GiE,
“Squad refreshers” is the last thing we need. Two/three first teamers and we have a great squad that can compete for League and CL.

  206. Rasp says:

Diaby is the player who has the most power in terms of forward momentum in our squad, its such a shame we will never see the best in him. Song is very strong in the tackle but he is not powerful when he carries the ball forward. I thought Robben had a good game last night but his finishing let him down and they didn’t have a Cesc type player who could orchestrate from midfield.

I was very impressed with Dortmund when we played them and thought we were lucky (Ramsey late goal) to beat them. I’m pretty sure Dortmund would have beaten the chavs comfortably last night.

  207. LB says:

It always struck me that players who say that they are joining a club to win trophies were just trying to hide the real fact that they moved because they would be paid more.

Can you think of an example where a player moved to a club that paid him less money and he still said that he moved there to win trophies?

  208. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Rasp,
I agree that Bayern did not have a Cesc type to orchestrate, but totally agree with you about the power in their play. They had very effective wide boys in Ribery and Robben (shots aside) that helped create 33 shots (thanks for stat GiE).

  209. MickyDidIt89 says:

    But LB,
The clubs that pay more have more money and therefore buy more players and increase their chances.

  210. LB says:

    Morning Rasp

Rosicky and Van Persie’s recoveries still suggest there is hope for Diaby.

  211. LB says:

    Morning Micky

You know what I mean. Do you think Nasri was telling the whole truth when he announced that he moved to City…………..to win trophies?

  212. Morning all

    New Post …………

  213. Rasp says:

Morning LB, I think Diaby has a couple more years on his contract and so he will have at least one more season to see if he can realise his potential – I live in hope 😕

  214. goonermichael says:

Chelsea scored from thier one corner. They were never going to score from open play, Ribery and robben are show ponies. Wouldn’t have either of them in my team. What has frimpong done?

  215. Gooner In Exile says:

The Mirror is reporting that Anzi Intheirpantsies are prepared to offer £300k a week to RvP.

  216. I’m really impressed with your writing abilities and also with the structure on your blog. Is that this a paid theme or did you modify it your self? Either way keep up the nice quality writing, it is uncommon to see a great blog like this one these days..
