10 Reasons to Feel Optimistic About the North London Derby

10 Reasons to Feel Optimistic About the North London Derby

1. We have the world’s number one goalie, as some of us have been saying for months (ahem, some of us, that is, not including me. I was doubtful whether young Szczesney was ready, but his sheer authority and ability this season has shown that I was in the minority for a good reason: I was wrong).

2. We have the BFG. He’s looking more assured every game and I, for one, have been surprised at his tactical and foot baling quality. I was expecting him to be a big solid lump, effective in the air – but he’s much more than that. (And given that the BFG is a Roald Dahl character, it’s interesting that he’ll be up against some other RD characters tomorrow: The Twits.

3. The BFG will be partnered by Alex Dimitri Song Billong, who was absolutely outstanding in the midweek CL game.

4. Even when decimated by injuries, we have players with the power to hurt any opposition. If Theo starts, I expect him to shred them like stir fry vegetables. And just when they think they can’t get any more shredded, we’ll throw in an Oxo cube.

5. We have the best away fans in the country and their mighty noise will be boosted by the acoustics you always find in a public toilet.

6. Robin van Persie is the most in form striker in the world (or maybe just behind Messi). Either way, expect him to bag a brace tomorrow.

7. We are, according to many pundits, the Underdogs. Can you believe that? What does that make them – the Overcnuts? Anyway, I always love it when we’re the underdogs because it’s usually when the Arsenal’s true quality comes through.

8. We have the best manager in the world. They have a tax dodger whose face is made out of melted wax.

9. We have more class than Hackney’s biggest comprehensive. They don’t know the meaning of the word.

10. After the freakish nature of some of our recent results against them (including goal-of-a-lifetime moments from nomark players never heard of again), Lady Luck is due to turn her smile in our direction tomorrow.

  1. Oh Rocky, I hope so, I really hope so …………………

We need to get some bragging rights back and they think we’re rubbish at the moment so this would be a stunning time.

They can go back to moaning about how we are lucky then 🙂

    Well saved Rock, 🙂

I went to Brentford a couple of times during Chezzer’a loan period ( to see him …….. obviously) 🙂 and it confirmed my view, formed previously while watching him play in the youth team, that he was/is brash, brave and full of brio!

Incidentally, did you read Bob Wilson’s homage to Arsene, yesterday?
We should have published it as required reading for all those who do not show respect to a great man.

It is axiomatic of course that the ‘hits’ on the site would have greatly increased with the numbers rushing to refute Bob’s words of wisdom!

  5. Jamie's avatar Jamie says:

We won’t get anywhere near getting a point at Spurs. We picked up one points from six against them last year. Since then they have got better and improved the starting eleven. We have got worse.

If we get a point tomorrow is will be a miracle.

If we can keep it down to three goals I would be surprised.

  7. Red Arse's avatar Red Arse says:

My only desire for tomorrow is for us to win.

A scrappy, disputed, ‘limp over the line’ winning goal would do just fine.

Of course 2:8 would be even better, but the points and the bragging rights would be even better! 🙂

Obviously you’re entitled to your opinion and it should be respected. Here’s the Bob Wilson article

    ………………………………………………………………………………………..

ARSENE WENGER is facing the toughest spell of his 15 years as Arsenal manager.

Yet according to Bob Wilson, the Frenchman — appointed as Gunners boss on September 30, 1996 — will only be truly appreciated when he leaves the club.

Former keeper Wilson, 69, won the Double with Arsenal both as a player and coach.

He has watched in awe of Wenger’s managerial skills down the years, while he has also been touched by his generosity.

Wilson, the club’s keeper coach until 2003, said: “If you’d said when he arrived that I would see the best football Arsenal has ever played and some of the greatest players the world has ever seen, I wouldn’t have believed you.

“If you had said I would go on to watch us play in the Champions League for the next 15 years, win three titles, five FA Cups, get to three Carling Cup finals and the final of the Champions League, my reply would have ended in ‘off’.

“People still talk about Herbert Chapman and what he achieved — and it will be the same with Arsene in many years’ time.

“When it comes to an end, only then will people realise what this academic brought to Arsenal.

“I was in turmoil when he arrived. My daughter had been living with cancer and on December 1, 1998 she died.

“The times I was struggling to keep it together, he was brilliant for me.

“I needed someone to understand where I was at for five years of my life — as it was a horrible rollercoaster — and Arsene saw how my wife needed to do something to keep her life on track and had to follow Anna’s orders, who was a nurse, to keep our work going.

“We then set up the Willow Foundation and by turning up at events, Arsene has helped raise about £250,000.”

Wilson is convinced that under-fire Wenger, who has suffered a nightmare start, will leave only on his terms.

He said: “It is quite clear this is going to be the most traumatic season for us. I know the hierarchy will never sack Arsene, the decision has to come from him. But he has bought himself a lot of time.

“What’s happening is not good. I have more sleepless nights now than ever but I’m going to Tottenham on Sunday and must hope for the best.

“The toughest moment was at Manchester United, when they had nine players out and two about to leave. I thought they’d lose 6-0 — not 8-2.

“I admire Arsene for not shutting up shop but it was hard to see the pain on his face.

“It also saddens me that many other Premier League managers don’t like him. It’s because he doesn’t go for a drink, he is shy and different.

“But he can laugh at himself and, above all, he is a fantastic

Nice post Rocky. I’m confident we will win tomorrow and confident this will be a good season and the start of a great squad. Jamie I dont see how the spuds have improved from last year tbh. I have to admit that the two sides are the closest they have been for a long long time with undoubted class in their squad plus imo a good manager. But we have a better squad and a better manager and we will win. 3-1 to the Arsenal.

GN5 that’s a special article talking about two of my favourite human beings not just footballing ones. Thanks for sharing and thanks to RA for mentioning.

I’ve been thinking about tomorrow’s game some more and it feels like the first time in a decade or so I am not confident of a win.

Tomorrow I want to see our players show spirit and fight first, result second, nice football third. If they go out and roll over without so much as a whimper I will be more furious than if we lose fighting for each other, the badge and the fans.

Well done, GN5. Sorry Rocky, for not getting back sooner, but I am out and about quite a bit today. 🙂

Nice one Rocky at short notice, all good reasons…….my confidence is returning slowly, just need the VMan at the back to return and STAY fit.

I understand your POV Jamie, it will be hard and they will come at us, we must defend as a team and not panic……..

Right now I would take 2-2……..have a break, get some players back and gel a bit more.

Ten days ago, I would have expected a beating, its a blow koscienly missing out, as Song would have been pivotal in the middle.

I agree RL, BFG is looking very astute purchase, he reads the game well and takes the easy option, putting his foot through it when required.

I do see a draw, but just hope RVP has a blinder and snatches a winner for us………

good post to save the tradition. We have to take it to them tomorrow, attack dodgy knee king, shut down big ears bale (szcz can flatten him again), and hope friedel doesn’t play out of his skin like he usually does against us.

    @ Jamie

How isn’t the prospect of ramsey and wilshere mouth watering? It is a FACT wilshere would start in any team in the league, and his games against barca showed just how valueable he really is. Ramsey in a season or two will have the same said about him. As for thinking we will be lucky to get a point, come on now how said is that. I know i’m an optimist, but i just don’t see how you couldn’t go into a game predicting a win. If we had a game against barca on wed i’d still think he would grab a victory.

    Hi Wigan

Good point mate, where are all those loud mouths who took some much pleasure in criticising Wenger for buying Chamberlain, actually, I don’t know why I am being so polite, those people who revel in finding something negative about Arsenal and writing it on here make me sick. They are the reason why the title: Gooners who secretly wished they supported someone else, was coined.

  27. SharkeySure's avatar SharkeySure says:

Even with all the injuries I think we still have enough about us to get a win tomorrow. Song at CB weakens our MF but strengthens our defence, so its not all doom and gloom.

I think over confidence could be the Toots undoing,. You underestimate our front three at your peril.

3-1 to the good guys. 1-1 followed by two late breakaways.

I just pray nothing ‘funny’ happens a la Rodwells red today !

  28. SharkeySure's avatar SharkeySure says:

No offence to anyone…but I can never understand how any Arsenal fan writes ‘we will lose tomorrow’,

Even if we are going to be really up against it, I still have to believe that a little bit of magic or luck, or a mistake, can turn a loss into a draw, or a draw into a win.

Thats the psychological view of it, but the simplest way to put it is that I could never write ‘we are going to l**e’. It does my head when I read that stuff…

I think that such negative sentiments are best left unshared.

  29. LB's avatar London says:

    Harry

I first heard that song in 2008 at White Heart Lane, I have written the words on here quite a few times, I think people thought I was writing poetry, it’s difficult to convey a song without the tune.
The problem is the words need slightly altering, we can’t sing: Oh Tottenham, oh Tottenham, it should be sad Tottenham, sad Tottenham, you’re never going to win the premier league.

In our shadows you will always be
Your hearts are full of pain and jealousy
    Sad Tottenham, sad Tottenham
You’re never going to win the premier league.

With all the crap negativity that was flying about in the summer, where are all those ‘fans’ now?

It annoys me because I love Arsenal so much and I love watching them because I love the way they play football. It’s in my blood. How can anyone who feels like that be so negative and such a ‘doomer’.

We’ve seen some shite football over the years at highbury, why can’t people see when we’ve got it good? There is no god-given right to win the permier leage or any championship for that matter.

I wish these ‘fans’ could remember the dark years of worrying whether we’d make the top 6! Let alone the top 10!

    ……………………………………………………………………………………………

Arsene Wenger says there is a “strong mentality” in the Arsenal team – and he hopes to see it in Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham.

Wenger wants to mark his 15th anniversary in charge of the Gunners by proving they are still a force in English football after six years without a trophy.

There could be few better stages to do so than in the frantic atmosphere of a packed White Hart Lane against an in-form Tottenham side with former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor leading their attack .

The importance of the fixture was drummed home to Wenger the moment he stepped inside Highbury in 1996 when the football world were still referring to him as ‘Arsene Who?’

How long did it take him to grasp the importance of the rivalry?

“Two days,” Wenger said, recalling one of his first meetings with assistant Pat Rice.

“Because when you see Pat Rice, you realise the game is important. I didn’t know that well what the north London derby was like before I arrived here.

“But when you experience it it is different. In England you have some derbies that are really passionate; Tottenham-Arsenal, Liverpool-Everton, Man United-Man City.”

With Arsenal having amassed just seven points from their six matches so far the derby takes on even greater significance.

“It’s not like any other game,” Wenger said.

“It is for us an opportunity to continue our way back to a more ambitious position in the league. The fact that it is a derby makes it more difficult but it is more enjoyable. Fantastic. Both sets of fans are up for it.”

Wenger is irritated by the criticism he and his team have attracted since the sales of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona and Samir Nasri to Manchester City.

But with Theo Walcott likely to return after recovering from his injured knee and Gervinho (hamstring) facing a late fitness test and a Tottenham side packed with attacking intent, the derby could be a feast of attacking football.

Wenger said: “Maybe people expected us to crumble completely with the start that we had but they don’t know us well enough. We have a very strong mentality in the team, we are highly focused and motivated and we are no fools.

“Tottenham are a good side and it could be a difficult game but it will be less difficult if we turn up with a great performance.”

To those who have suggested it is the changing of the guard in north London with Arsenal’s period of domination at an end, Wenger said: “To me, they (Tottenham) have always been direct rivals every year we have played them.

“They always have good teams. They had (David) Ginola and (Teddy) Sheringham. They had always great players.

“But we are at the end of September and the season finishes in May. Don’t come to quick conclusions, there is a long way to go.”

Wenger refuses to look back and savour the triumphs of his 15 years in charge which have brought three Premier League titles and a Champions League final appearance against Barcelona.

Instead he concentrates on potential future successes, insisting that given time Arsenal can be the world’s top club under his guidance,

“All what you have done in life is not so important, what you do in front of you, that is what is exciting,” Wenger said.

There is little chance, however, of him jettisoning his miserly reputation any time soon.

England’s most parsimonious top boss dismisses any thought of reckless investment and shrugs aside any criticism.

He said: “Look, it is quite simple, the whole world is bankrupt and the one who is not is accused of not being bankrupt. I can’t understand it.”

Great 1st half from Joel Campbell. Scored the goal, nearly made a second with a great dribble and pass. Looks dangerous.

Joel Campbell looks a terrific prospect. Big, quick and strong. A natural finisher, but also a skillful dribbler and an eye for a pass.

They should be trained to think not only for themselves but for the side generally, and they should be encouraged to make the most of the brains of everybody. I shall never be too old to learn or to borrow the idea of someone else, if it is a good one. We at Highbury throw all our knowledge into a common pool, and the benefits is incalculable.

    The words of Herbert Chapman.

    They also sound very Wengerish.

    Great spot.

    Rocky,

It’s true they have many similarities.

    That was from the book.

    Herbert Chapman on Football.

    @ G5

good quote, definently an arsene type response. Cheers for the joke too, loved it.

    @ GLiC

well played sir, i’d have done the same thing, let alone someone who lives in england and feels what its like to have that rivalry with the scum.

    @ Chas

cheers for the video, another prospect it seems, i hope he continues his development at lorient ready to come back firing for us

  72. Gooner in Exile's avatar Gooner in Exile says:

I knew Chas would come up with the goods on the JC goal, near post run and finish …. Nice to see, if young Afobe doesn’t get his chance this year his time in an Arsenal shirt may be numbered too, which is a shame.

  73. oz gunner's avatar oz gunner says:

Afobe is a great prospect too, i’d utted if he be gutted if he left. Didn’t barca try to take him before he signed a new contract with us a season or two ago?

  74. oz gunner's avatar oz gunner says:

    * i’d be gutted if he left

2-0 to the arsenal with BFG getting the go ahead goal and RVP or Chamak getting one as well….

  76. pat's avatar pat says:

sorry forgot to say a great post Rocky – love the Dahl references!

Would RVP be our “Fantastic Mr Fox” ?

Arsene our Willie Wonka? Should I stop? Yes I should!

  77. oz gunner's avatar oz gunner says:

    @ Pat

if arsene is our willie wonka is young jack charlie bucket? or was cesc charlie bucket but failed as he sold the everlasting gobstopper to Barca?!

once again I get on and you`re all asleep. I share Jamie`s concerns but I think we could beat them. Is Gervinho out?

Here’s a little bit more from the Lorient game. The French commentators call him “Comme-belle”. I hope Aliadiere isn’t teaching him too many bad habits!

  87. MickyDidIt89's avatar MickyDidIt89 says:

    Rocky,
I feel guilty as sin. Was here yesterday morning and did not step up and get scribbling. Thank you and I promise to do my bit during the International break.

  88. MickyDidIt89's avatar MickyDidIt89 says:

    Harry: superb Bale clip.
Chas: possibly the best line I have ever heard.
GiE: Yeah, weird. We will be on the beach again today before the game.

  89. MickyDidIt89's avatar MickyDidIt89 says:

    GiE,
What does Joel Campbell need to do to get a work permit. Is it a certain number of International caps?

  90. MickyDidIt89's avatar MickyDidIt89 says:

More often than not, things said come back to haunt. All this crap about Adebayor not celebrating makes me think he will not score.
Am I clutching at thin things?

  91. Did anyone notice Raddy saying he was going underground for the weekend 😉

Rasp – We’ll give Raddy a bit of time and if he doesn’t turn up I think Micky should choose the team 🙂

    Morning Micky 😀

  92. Four in a row – sad 😆

  93. That’s a very ‘thin thing’ Micky ……………..

  94. MickyDidIt89's avatar MickyDidIt89 says:

    Peaches,
Morning. Popping outside for 20 mins to start clearing up from last nights’ shenanigans.

  95. MickyDidIt89's avatar MickyDidIt89 says:

Four in a row..sad? Just because you can pull up after three! Some of us have no self respect, no self discipline and no brakes.

  96. Gooner in Exile's avatar Gooner in Exile says:

Micky..haven’t a clue I guess International caps, but one struggles to see the reasoning when the player comes from a minor country. Unfortunately because we got Ryo an Exceptional Talent Visa and can only get one a year we couldn’t get one for Campbell as far as I understand.

  97. evonne's avatar evonne says:

    morning all
I have just watched match of the day. Some shocking referring decisions again. Jack Rodwell made a great tackle for which he was red carded!! That Atkinson fellow is terrible, who have we got today?

  98. evonne's avatar evonne says:

Peaches – you are all smiles today! What’s up, a good feeling before the game?

  99. Morning evonne – just the warm sunshine …….. again 🙂 How can we be so lucky …………….

I’m happy that I’ll be able to find plenty to do to keep me going through the next 7 hours 🙂

  100. God I hope our boys want to mash those spuds 😦

  101. evonne's avatar evonne says:

Peaches – ha ha ha, mashed spuds dish of the day 🙂
Is Gervinho playing? I really hope to see the little Ox rather than Theo

  102. harry's avatar harry says:

Morning all, a fine day for smashed spuds, with lashings of gravy…..

Yeah Evonne it was a shocker, and there are other tackles he got wrong as well……..The Wolves should have won as well some bad decisions there………

I know we have benefit of the replay etc etc, and its all swings and roundabouts as it evens itself out etc etc, but for me Referees are ruining the game with their inconsistent incompetence or is that consistent incompetence, either way they are generally muppets who rather than believe they are there to help, they believe that football is there for them…….

No one is perfect and we all have an ability to get things wrong and we can all see things differently, (ratings for players is good example) but they must get these big decisions right more often than not and unfortunately they dont………

I just hope today does not hinge on a referees decision……..

Still hope we snatch it, but I have a gut feeling for 2-2 or even 3-3 again……..

  103. evonne's avatar evonne says:

    Hiya Harry
I strongly disagree with you! It will be 1-3 to the Mighty 🙂

It seems that the referring debate is never ending. Whose decision is it anyway to introduce technology?? It is sickening to see so many costly errors and NOTHING being done about it.

Poor Rodwell, the lad was devastated and he will be shit scared to tackle like this again, ie to tackle brilliantly

  104. Gooner in Exile's avatar Gooner in Exile says:

I think Atkinson may have been told the Rodwell decision was wrong, hence not dealing with some other awful challenges. Thought Wolves had a couple of shocking decisions against them to.

The refereeing standard is just appalling we maybe have two refs who are good enough, but I couldn’t name them….because when they ref they are not noticed.

Unfortunately Evonne we have Mike Dean today viewers of a nervous disposition should definitely not read this http://blog.emiratesstadium.info/archives/14953 maybe today is not the day to unleash the Pong.

  105. evonne's avatar evonne says:

GiE – oh no, that fat little p 😦

I am not going to spoil my day and read the stats, sorry GiE

So, whose decision is it not to introduce technology into EPL ???

  106. evonne's avatar evonne says:

I take it all back, he aint fat, what’s the name of the fat guy??
