Stand Up if you hate Mark Hughes

Two certainties this afternoon. Firstly, that Sparky will be telling his midfield to “let them know you’re there” and secondly, that Mark Schwarzer will have an outstanding game. In my opinion, it is upon these two personalities the game will hinge.

Hughes is man under pressure, having seen his team fall to one point above the relegation zone. However they are the draw Kings of the PL having won none of their away fixtures but drawing 5 out of 7.  In fact Fulham have only won twice this season and I remain sure they will not add that that tally today. Fulham have a nasty injury list, longer than ours (for once) and Bobby Zamora’s broken leg has seriously blunted their attacking threat.

This being a purely personal pre-match and not representing the ethos of the site, I can give vent to my dislike of Mark Hughes. He was a spiteful, dirty player who specialised in kicking the ankle tendons of the opposition and feigning innocence when challenged. He was all I hate in Man Utd (and then Barca where he sank ignominiously). A quiet assassin whose pretence of being a fair and honest player was pure sham. Then into management and  you will not be surprised to learn that his Blackburn team finished bottom of the Fairplay league the 4 seasons he stayed. Upon moving to Man City he proceeded to freely spend the Arab money – €25m for the totally erratic and troublesome Adebayor was great business for us, and the €32m he wasted on Robinho was another example of his poor purchases. At the same time he bought Ben-Haim, Kompany, De Jong, Bellamy and Barry to make sure the team had a violent edge to it. He had 2 wins from 11 before being sacked and has continued his good form with Fulham who have now won 2 out of 15. The man gets paid millions for results like that –  he must have the best interview technique and agent!!

And then there is Schwarzer. Hughes has openly stated that Mr.Wenger was trying to sign him right up to the point Schwarzer signed his contract this week. I do not blame Hughes for wanting to hold onto his player, and it is to the Aussies credit that he was not bitter about being held back from achieving his ambition to play CL football. What I don’t like is the glee with which Hughes thwarted both AW and his goalkeeper, it was the actions of a small, petty man.

Which brings us onto his spat with our beloved Captain. Hughes took umbrage at Cesc’s assertions that Blackburn’s football ethos had nothing whatsoever to do with what Sparky learned at Barca. Then he went public – not something that did him any good at all, after all everyone who saw the game had to agree with Cesc. Hughes demanded respect from Cesc who apologised (under pressure from AW), but if Hughes wants respect then he has to earn it – fans, players, and managers respect people who adhere to the traditions and artistry of the game, not a man who sends out teams with instructions to kick the lunch out of the opposition (apart from a few notable exceptions Fat Sam, Pulis etc)

Enough of my rant ….. onto the Arsenal.

Can we continue to scrape wins or will Fulham get the draw they will come for? If Fulham score first (and with our leaky defence it is a reasonable assumption), we could be in for a long, frustrating afternoon. But our midfield sans Cesc looked great at Villa and with AA and Chamakh on form, we have lots of firepower.

My team:

Bench. Chesney, JD, Gibbs, RvP, Theo, Denilson, NB

I see this game being a classic attack v defence, with many Arsenal attacks floundering on the head and feet of Hangelaand and Aaron Hughes, and Schwarzer desperate to show us what we missed. But we are on the verge of something special with this Arsenal team. Fewer and fewer people believe me but a poor half against S***s doesn’t preclude us from winning the League, and as we have already seen all the top sides have lost points to inferior opposition – let us hope today is not another example.

p.s. Sorry about the rant 😉

  1. Morning all

What a fantastic rant Raddy, born out of the frustration of not being here no doubt but nevertheless had to be said.

I thought it was pretty appalling that Cesc had to apologise to be fair, Hughes demands no respect as far as I’m concerned.

Hope we can stuff ’em this afternoon 😉

  2. king gooner says:

you don’t have to apologise about the rant when it comes to that ex manure ****-spot on!

  3. Rasp says:

    Morning,

I share your disdain for Hughes Raddy. I hope you don’t mind the pic, but it reminds us of the ‘industrial language’ as Hughes put it that he used to describe Arsène and that subsequently led to the boss refusing to shake his hand. The man (Hughes) has no class.

  4. Big Raddy says:

    I am not a fan!!

Saddened not to meet up with you all today, and to add insult to injury, I have been ordered to a pre-Xmas tea party which means I shall miss the game – the first this season.

    Such are cupid’s arrows 😉

  5. SharkeySure says:

    Great post Mr Radders.

Hughes really is scumbag no.1 !!

5-0 to the good guys today. Hat trick from Song – header, left foot screamer, right foot overhead kick. Yes, in that order !!

  6. Rasp says:

    Morning Raddy,

I’ve given up on trying to show a formation so I’ve just scattered the players around the pitch as you can see 😛

Shame we can’t hook up today, we’ll drink some Peronis on your behalf and try to make GN5 proud by singing our tonsils off.

  7. Rasp says:

    Morning Sharkey,

Are you going? We’re gonna meet up with a few others for a pre-match beverage.

  8. We’ll be at The Arsenal Tavern for pre-match Peronis if anyone wants to hook up with us. I’m a girl and I’ll be wearing an Arsenal scarf 😉

  9. Rocky Jay says:

i look at the formation and think, why have i never thought of it previously!! for hell, i wonder why Wenger never thought of it before!(maybe exchange wilshere and song)
Its clear Clichy needs support, and since Arshavin does not do that, we have Rosicky there. That way Arshavin is left to do what he does best! He could easily play the Henry role, with Chamakh, Van Persie or Bendtner playing the Bergkamp role.
Nasri with his trickery in the Ljunberg role.
Rosicky contributing to the attack in the Pires role, Wilshere as the box to box midfielder(Vieira) and Song in the Parlour role.
Now just the defense needs to be sorted a bit and we have the invincibles all over again!!!

  10. Rasp says:

    Hi RJ,

I’m not sure how tongue in cheek your comment is, but I was resposnsible for the pitch layout and Raddy chose the players. I just positioned them where, from past experience, they seem to operate most of the time. I agree that Clichy needs cover because he often deserts his post and Tomas is a much better defender than AA, although I think Arsh is unfairly criticised for not working hard enough.

  11. SharkeySure says:

Naah its web streams for me today Rasp….but first its 90mins out in the cold at the top of a hill with three kids and a sled.

Wot joy..not !!! But its got to be done, if I want looking after in old age !!!

  12. Irishgunner says:

Afternoon all – I’ve a feeling Arshavin could have a good day.

  13. Irishgunner says:

    What stupidity

  14. Carlito11 says:

Someone needs to manmark Kamara in the second half- Arshavin got tired but him Chamakh and Nasri were a class act. They just have to be more clinical

  15. Carlito11 says:

    NASRI!!!!!

  16. SharkeySure says:

    Sammi Nasri…..WTF !!!!

  17. Carlito11 says:

that was fuckin exhausting! Nasri is a god! 🙂

  18. Carlito11 says:

    …and Chelsea drop points 🙂

  19. Carlito11 says:

    and spuds! Happy dayz!

  20. kelsey says:

    Awesome Nasri 2 Fulham 1

  21. kelsey says:

Apparently I am doing the match report.Did i notice theo on the pitch or did my eyes deceive me.

    Nasri,Sagna,Clichy,Arshavin,Fabianski,Djourou in that order.

  22. SharkeySure says:

Kels…I’m not too sure which team Walcott came on for, he was wearing red, but kept winning Fulham goal kicks !!!

  23. RockyLives says:

Thank the Lord for Samir Nasri! (although he looked crocked at the end).

  24. Carlito11 says:

Weird one being so much better for the first 25mins and then doing our usual implosion thing. I thik Etuhu out Song’d Song in midfield- big JD did well. The central mid seems to run on beleif alone and any setback causes a complete breakdown in fluency. But Nasri has movement, touch, technique, drive… amazing player he’s turned into 🙂

  25. kelsey says:

Technically the ref should have stopped the game with the clash of heads, but goals change games and after the equaliser one could have thought we were Fulham and vica versa.lessons to be learnt(yet again)

RVP though a deft touch is no way near fit and Song had a bad hair day.

  26. RockyLives says:

Two more assists for Arshavin – he must be heading for some sort of record.

I would still much prefer last season’s Song to the modern version.

And what’s with Chamakh? Another one-on-one clear through on goal where he turned away from goal to look for a pass. Unbelievable.

  27. Carlito11 says:

I’m with you both on Song not being right today…

  28. gunnern5 says:

Sharkey: You have become my instant hero – atdhe.net was easy to load and I got perfect reception.
I therefore decree that all bets you have lost are now null and void.
As an added bonus all lost bets for the balance of 2010 will be forgiven and passed on to anybody that believes in Bendtner.

  29. RockyLives says:

My mistake – it was RvP who got the assist for Samir’s second (after being fed by Arsh).

  30. RockyLives says:

Also, I think Hughes made a terrible tactical mistake in taking off Kamara (unless he was injured). Kamara was causing us problems all game long and the balance shifted when he went off.

  31. 26may1989 says:

Nasri’s fan-bloody-tastic. And surely Djourou has to be picked to start, he’s the in-form CB.

Well done Radders (or was it Rasp?) for getting our line-up on the button, subs included.

  32. SharkeySure says:

No worries GN5….I love that site because it is so bloody simple. See game on list, click, watch game !

Todays picture quality was a little off for me, but still decent. Tues night was practically HD quality.

  33. Rasp says:

Nasri was superb, Jack had too much to do because Song had a mare…… I kept wondering what position Song was supposed to be playing in – he just seemed to get in everyone’s way. He should return to his role of last season, the attacking midfield experiment has failed.

Theo was an embarrassment – particularly when he went running up the pitch and just carried the ball over the goal line. He lost possession a couple of times and just looked round plaintively instead of chasing back to make up for his lack of ability. I don’t think Theo will ever be good enough as a wide player, he may have a future centrally but I doubt it.

  34. Big Raddy says:

And now you’re going to believe me
And now you’re going to believe me etc etc etc

  35. Big Raddy says:

6 points ahead of Spuds. TOTL. What is there not to love?

I read that we were below par. but someetimes a winning team wins despite a poor performance. MU do it and now it appears we can

    I am very happy

  36. SharkeySure says:

    Djourou looked fantastic !!

    Clichy’s work rate today….phenomenal !!!

  37. Rasp says:

I forgot to say, kelsey is correct, the ref should have stopped the game when Kozzer sustained a head injury and therefore their goal would not have stood, but Djourou actually improved the defence and had a blinder. Our best CB partnership is now Djourou and one other (Raddy)

  38. SharkeySure says:

Djourou and Big Raddy at CB on Weds night…??

Controversial choice, but if he’s flying in especially, then it’d be a shame not to play him….

  39. Rasp says:

    🙂 Sharkey

  40. Big Raddy says:

If I get Squill’s wages for the week then you can expect to see a bald but very fit elder gentlemen in the centre of defence 😀

  41. Irishgunner says:

Wenger has defended the ref in his decision not to stop the game and I agree with him – if Kozzer went down straight away we would have a case but the ref wasn’t to know the extent of the injury when he tried to play on. Hopefully Kozzer will be okay soon.

Great day all round for us.

  42. gnarleygeorge9 says:

    COYRRR & Big Johan

BR, get on board the Big Johan bandwagon, its not as trendy as being on Nascars, but ultimately it all adds up to CHAMPIONS.

Its time to boogie on into that snow town called manchester, knick 3 points, then boogie on out again.

  43. charybdis1966 says:

That’ll be a tough one Gnarley – hopefully the thrashing they got from West Ham will be playing on their minds.

  44. gnarleygeorge9 says:

    chary

If its not enough to beat manure so as they are never known as Invincibles, the chance to cement top spot could be the driving force to topple them on their own dunghill.

  45. Big Raddy says:

GG. I don’t need persuading. JD is the man
