Today’s post is by our newest guest writer samflu.
Tomas Rosicky and Samir Nasri – two extremely talented players capable of filling the rather large hole left in Arsenal’s midfield three following Cesc’s injury. Elegant, graceful, and creative, these two players are not only a joy to watch, but they also posses the quality required to get the Gunners’ creative juices flowing.
It is rather strange to think that both have almost the same number of appearances seeing that Rosicky joined Arsenal Football Club two years before Nasri. In 90 appearances since 2006 for The Arsenal, Tomas has scored 16 goals and made 10 assists. Nasri, only joining the club in 2008, has scored 12 goals and made 8 assists in 73 games. This season, both have played 29 games in all competitions, and both have played a part in 8 goals. Rosicky has scored 3 and created 5 while Nasri has scored 5 and created 3.
Not only are these players similar in stats, but also in style of play, height, and weight. Both are blessed with exquisite touch, terrific vision, and wonderful dribbling skills.
With players so similar how could you possible choose one over the other? Or are these similarities merely hiding the defining differences?
Wenger has already stated that he is ready to put his trust in young Samir to fill in for Cesc, but is this the right choice?
We saw how devastatingly good Nasri can be when played centrally against Porto. He put in a top performance which was rounded off by one of the best goals scored in the Champions League this season. He linked up well with the other midfielders and strikers, and he was a constant threat going forward.
But we have also seen how little he can contribute when played centrally. The games away at Hull and Barcelona come to mind. Of course, these were no easy games, but Nasri was almost nonexistent in both. The Hull game presented the French midfielder with an extremely physical game while the Barcelona one presented him with an extremely technical game. Against Hull, Nasri could do very little as he was often out muscled by the Tiger’s more physical players. Arsenal won it thanks to some Russian magic and Danish opportunism, not Nasri’s contribution from midfield. Against Barca, Nasri faced the most technically gifted midfield in the world. Not only was it almost impossible for him to snatch the ball from them, but once he did receive the ball, he had around 0.31 seconds to think about what to do with it before being pressured by two or three Barca players.
Of course, there are many different ways to look at Nasri’s performances, but I don’t believe that the Frenchman is the one who should step in for Cesc.
After the Barca game last week, Rosicky was getting a lot of negative reviews. Yes, he had a bad game, but come on… People were and still are screaming for Arsene to sell him, but that’s just ridiculous. Rosicky is a fantastic player; I’d even say he’s the most technical and creative along with Cesc. Some of his passes are out of this world. In the Czech national team, Rosicky plays centrally, and just as we have seen a couple of times at Arsenal, he plays amazing there. Just ask any American after the 2006 World Cup. He absolutely destroyed them. At Camp Nou, Wenger should have left Nasri on the left and played Rosicky centrally. Nasri played excellent against Barca on the left at the Emirates, and he should have stayed there. As mentioned before, Nasri was often crowded out in the middle and he doesn’t have enough bite in him to fight for the ball unlike his team mate with the number 7. Rosicky could have made a huge difference for us if he would have played centrally. He’s got a crazy edge about him. I could see him in elementary school yelling back at the 2 metre tall bully without an ounce of fear in him. He would have run the midfield like a bulldog, always snatching at Busquets, Xavi, and Keita’s feet. And going forward, he could have worked magic with Diaby. But the past is the past, and now Wenger must look ahead.
Does he stick with his decision to play Nasri centrally rather than on the wings, or does he let Rosicky play the Cesc role?
I would choose Rosicky, no questions asked, especially at this stage of the season considering all the pressure the Arsenal players are facing in these last five games.
Rosicky has immense mental strength. Anyone that comes back from a 20 month layoff to play at the top level again has a purely winning mentality in my book. But this is not all. Rosicky is also a natural leader, not afraid to let his voice be heard. We have seen him get in other players’ faces time and time again, and his leadership status was reaffirmed when he was appointed captain of the Czech national team. Rosicky also brings experience. Turning 30 this year, Rosicky is one of the few experienced players at Arsenal FC, and his experience will be vital in the upcoming weeks.
Mental strength, leadership, and experience. That’s where Rosicky wins, in my opinion. And that is why Wenger should let him play in the midfield three. Let Nasri torment the wings. If you think about it, his superb goal against Porto did not start from a central position, but from the right wing.
If we play like this, I believe the trip to White Hart Lane will be no problem. Of course, the Spuds haven’t really posed any real threat to us in the League since ’99, but this way we could beat them by an even larger margin.

Well argued case for little Mozart there Samflu. If Rosicky’s sub par performance at the Camp Nou was down to not being fully fit, after Karl Henrys hatchet man job on him, then I would tend to agree- the white hot heat of the NLD battle is one best suited to an experienced head, not a youngster.
Song, Diaby & Tomas in the middle with Nasri, Theo and Bendy up top is the way to go IMHO.

Morning Peaches… I disagree wholly, Nasri has to be over Rosicky as I don’t feel he can last 90 mins yet.
You singled out Nasri v Hull and Barca away when I actually thought Nasri was our best midfielder and had a nasty challenge on him after 10 mins but carried on in a side where only 2-3 players can hold their heads up and say they gave their best.
I can’t think of many things Rosicky has done this term apart from a consolation goal v City and a shot that led to a goal v Stoke… oh and Everton at home.
Nasri has been going strength to strength and improved greatly but not as effective when playing 2 games in 3 days….
We’ve had a weeks break and think they’ll both play tomorrow anyway with Theo as “impact sub”

Good point Tommy, one thing I was hoping Rosicky was going to bring to the side was a thunderbolt shot from outside the box. We know he can do it, but he seems to have been ‘conditioned’ into passing like the rest.
It is the leadership bit that does it for me, Livers.
I always think we will know we are in a game at WHL (ie we will be kicked)and Rosicky has a cooler head, don’t forget Sol will be under great pressure on his own account and replacing Cesc is very much about having another leader on the pitch.

Saw this quote about tonight’s Chav game and it made me laugh: “Tonight Chelsea face Bolton. You’d expect it to be a routine night for John Terry (dull win, almost break someone’s leg, then sleep with a team-mate’s missus)”
No chance. Rosicky is lazy and weak and his finishing is poor. Samir is so versatile he can even play as defensive midfielder. He is much much stronger than Rosicky and his tackling is even better than Denilson (which isn’t saying that much). He’s also a lot more efficient in front of goal and his dribbling is much better. When would you ever see Rosicky score a goal like Samir’s against Porto? I am one of the few to say we should maybe sell Rosicky or Arshavin and sign Hazard whilst bringing through Wilshere and Walcott. Nasri and Rosicky are too similar, we need a runner on the other flank.

Raspers – the guy is Teflon, he does so much stuff that anyone else would get caned for and yet he can do no wrong on the pitch. Bu tin World Cup year how can we expect the FA to uphold standards of decency and fairness. No wonder they have their top man resigning again and again. They get what they deserve, negative press – they can’t even provide a decent playing surface ofr the national, showcase stadium. They deserve all the flak they get.
RohanG – I don’t see how you can describe Rosicky as “Lazy & weak” – I was at the pre season match against Barnet and he was a picture of studied concentration and effort. Every game I’ve attended since then this season (about 8 so far)where Rosicky has played he’s worked very hard, both on and off the ball.
I agree, whilst I love Nasri I think the Rosicky offers a little more creativity and we rarely let him play in the centre where he is most effective. As for him not being able to play 90 minutes, there have been times when he has been withdrawn when looking fit and dangerous.
I think Wenger will go with Nasri though!
RonanG You will get your wish AA will IMHO be on his bike in the summer, we have done our job in showcasing him in the premier league, he will now collect his last big paycheck move elsewhere and be happy or rich.
We need Thomas against the spuds, he is far from lazy, although I agree Sami is the man for the future but he has a way to go yet and will probably be Cesc’s long term replacement

I think a lot will depend on whether Song is fit.
I reckon we could accommodate both in the line up below. I would play Eboue on the right as he is quick and can help Sagna out and may be able to push the monkey boy on their left wing backwards. I would like to see Rosicky in the middle but I reckon he will swap with Nasri in this line-up.

Drew10 – if I was to be a bit radical I would put Diaby in the front 3 in the “number 10” role and put Nasri in the middle 3. Other than that I’d just be unsure whether to start Theo and replace him with Eboue or vice versa.

Chary, I think we need Diaby breaking from deeper, he has brilliant ball retention skills in tight areas. Plus I want him to make Jemain Penis look like a well….
To be honest you need them both, the difference i feel is that Nasri brings changes that are more individualistic in their nature and ability to turn games, whilst Thomas game is more team centric, so in essence you need them both, to power the team and to sprinkle that individualistic difference that can change games.
In that vein I’d stick Nasri in the front three and Thomas with the middle three.

We’ll play 4:5:1 (4:3:3) and like you, I’d start with both Nasri and Rosicky although, it wouldn’t surprise me to see EE in the mix – he owes us one after getting himself sent off against them.
TommyS – AA still jerks(moves slowly and shifts back up a bit after each scroll down) when I scroll down although typing comments is not so bad. It’s like trying to open a roller blind that’s stiff.
Nasri and Rosicky are hugely talented footballers. I bet Nasri can more than fill-in for injured Captain Supreme – Fabregas. What many have not said is that Nasri was playing in the Fabregas role at Marsseille i.e. creative (attacking) Central Midfield. Remember Samir’s bi-section of FC Porto?
Good post. We need them both. Nasri on his day can destroy any team. Against Porto he did mutch more than his superb goal. Both are relatively cosistent players, i think. It is Diaby who can make the difference in the remaining games. Arsenal is unstopable when Diaby plays his game.

Spot on with your comments. If we defend as a team and control the midfield we will have no problems tomorrow.
I have said for many years from when I first saw them that Diaby and Cesc could be one of the best midfield pairings in the world. That was of course when we played 442. I still hold out that Diaby will come right, he needs to be more consistent and a little less wasteful with passes, but overall he is beginning to show what he is capable of. I love watching this guy play!

I prefer to see Diaby further up the pitch when Song is playing. He can turn defenders as well as any player I’ve seen. Sometimes when he’s on a run, I just want him to keep going as defenders back offf him due to his size and ball retention, maybe that will come with confidence.

Diaby is a monster, he just needs that je ne sais quoi to snap into place and he will start taking teams apart. The ingredients are in him (technical, physical and mental) its the spark that lights the fire thats missing. The season it all clicks, God help the opposition.

Rosicky seems tired lately whereas Nasri has found his impetus and is playing his best football in an Arsenal shirt so far IMO
Amourist I agree that Diaby could be a monster of a player – Wenger wanted him to be the new Vieira but recently he’s displayed a few Henryesque skills too – running at players with the ball, a few twists and turns a joy to watch. It would be good if he remembers he has an amazing curling shot too.

Peaches, I don’t think he is the General that PV4 was at the moment or that his DNA leans that way, it might well do as his physical prowess wanes, and whilst he has developed his tackling, he doesnt seem to have that secret joy PV4, Keane or central players of that ilk gleaned from snapping tackles in, no I think Diaby has whispers of the great Zidane in his game albeit packaged very differently.

Do we think Theo will start? I suppose he has to get some games in before the World Cup and I expect Capello will be there tomorrow.
No Lennon yet, so Theo is almost assured of a place on the plane but he is frightening when he comes off the bench and those spuds’ll have really heavy legs after sunday.

I agree with you. Nasri’s time will come but for now the experience of the Czech captain is too valuable to ignore. If TR hasn’t got the legs for 90 mins, then sub him after 70.
And Diaby is a must for tomorrow, anywhere on the pitch will do. It is the time for him to show he can be a first team regular rather than a squad member. He has the technique and the ability, now he has to show he has the attitude.

First of all, thank you for all the kind words. It’s a privilege to have an article of mine posted on such a great site.
I like the discussion going on, but I stick to what I said in the post.
Nasri is a magnificent player. He will play a big part in these last 5 games, but centrally, I believe he needs more time. He’s definitely one for the future. For these next tough games, like many of you have mentioned, experience is vital, and that is why Rosicky should play.
I doubt it will happen though. Unfortunately.
Also, I agree 100% that Diaby can be a beast in midfield – he’s just missing that extra bite.

I think we could do with finding a way to piss Diaby off a bit in each game. Get him pissed off and angry so that he puts it about a bit. I think it is a general thing in our team we are too nice. It is time to start chewing some legs and getting that bit of the Keown’s about us!

Rosicky IS a strong central player and his vision IS immense. I can picture him spreading the play right now. TBH I think where our main problem would lie is probably arsene’s wish to stick to one formation per season and playing to the strengths of a formation than playing to the strengths of the team maybe, I dunno arsene knows best but I dig your points about nas and Ro, Ro.
I’d be interested to know your thoughts on Denilson (Our Mr Consistent lol). Keep it up!

Sebastian – I’m glad you see the situation the same way I do. The 4-3-3 formation has been highly successful this season, but there were certain games when I believed going with 4-2-2 would have been a better choice – but, as you say, Arsene knows best. Your view on Tomas is spot on in my opinion. Ah, the good old Denilson debate. Personally, I believe he’s one fore the future and that Wenger should not sell him any time soon. The stats claim that he is one of our best and most consistent players, but I just believe he needs more fire in his belly – especially for the position he’s playing in. If he can start showing genuine passion and perserverance in games, he could become a great player for The Arsenal. For one, the constant jogging needs to stop – he has to show some fighting spirit! Also, his shooting has been great lately.

Nasri is literally on the first step of a great career whilst the opposite applies to Rosicky.
Nasri reserves his best performances at HOME, and i tend to agree with Rasp that we hardly ever see the Rosicky that shone in the W.C. shooting from thirty plus yards out.So many of our midfield appear to be clones of each other, and Wenger’s has his style of play which sometimes thwarts the natural game of a player IMO
With regards to tomorrow, a cameo role for Theo, it will be a good test as he will be barracked by the spuds.

I have just found the time to read the post carefully and have to say it is a very clever, well written piece.
I, like DanDan, agree that with hindsight Nasri on the wing with Rosicky in the middle makes a great deal more sense.
I lamented the fact that there was next to no link up play between Diaby and Nasri the former seemed to have it fixed in his head that he needed to beat at least one player before he passed but sadly, as we know, more often than not he failed and we lost possession.
Barcelona, by contrast, always found their man and were able to move forward at speed. The only person in our midfield who found his man which enabled us to move forward was Denilson. I thought he had a better game than either Nasri or Diaby that’s to say with his much maligned short passes he always found his man — something Barcelona did every single time. It still hurts to think about what might have been but I am convinced that soundly thrashing spuds tomorrow will go a long way to help.

Nasri or Rosicky should have a field day what with T Bone Huddlestone and Jenas to contend with in the middle.

Hello All. Good article Samflu. I’m with you on Rosicky – a very talented, technical player. He’s slightly different in style to Nasri (more of a pass-and-move player, while Nasri is more willing to try the occasional dribble) but what he does edge over the younger man is experience. In a game like tomorrow’s experience will count for a lot.
That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if Tomas is on the bench tomorrow and we start with a midfield of Song, Denilson and Nasri.

The more i think about it, tomorrow is a massive game for both clubs for different reasons. Just saw a repeat of the 2004 season and I still cringe at lehmann giving away that last minute penalty even though the draw secured the title.

I gotta say that Nasri should be centre Mid. he is fitter than rosicky and will get much more stuck in. Rosicky should play in the left wing role. This will give me lots of freedom to come inside. Besides clichy provides the width anyway. I agree that EE should play right as well.

EE to start on the right for me too. Theo may well become a 90 minute player, but this isn’t the game to treat as a learning experience. He’s shown how effective he is as a sub. The only reason I can think of starting with Theo might be because we want to bring RvP on for him after an hour.
I think Eboue will start given Song’s absence.

There is only one other conspiracy theory out there more ridiculous than the Rosicky rehab theory, only one other that is more outrageously anti Arsenal and that is the one that Wenger earns a commission on the money he doesn’t spend that’s to say that if he doesn’t spend his allotted budget he benefits financially. Nothing in the whole world makes me angrier than that lie — nothing. I hate the people who spread this poison to my very core.

Chavs so so lucky. Bolton didn’t get a single decision in their favour.
The first-half penalty looked a good shout rasp but the lino made sure they didn’t get the second half one 😦

Once again a referee assists the Chavs – there ought to be a Government Review. But Bolton’s finishing was awful.
Shame eh – they had a couple of good chances if the players had got into good positions. Was Jack on a yellow – the commentators kept saying how he needed to be careful.

You’ve convinced me. I’d have to say, yeah.. Nasri on the left, Walcott on the right and TR7 supported by diaby and denilson in the middle.
The fact that Palacios is out (along with our own enforcer), hopefully means it’ll be a purely footballing affair. Rosicky v Modric in the middle should be interesting. We’ll have too much for them though.

But before I even read it I had not even planned on putting Rosicky in my starting 11, lol
I understand why so many people see him they way they do, I used to rate him highly but I just haven’t seen him offering anything to the team since he came back from his injury, I know what he is capable of, I just have not seen it.
And the game we have is important, I rather have a player who could in theory offer us more for tomorrow.
Thats why I believe we should start with:
Sagna – Campbell – TV – Clichy
………… Denilson………
……..Nasri…..Diaby…….
Eboue………………..Vela
……… The Dane………..
I know Vela is not as good as Rosicky or Nasri… but in my opinion he has the ability to be better than at least one of them but the main reason I want him there tomorrow is pace.
We know that Walcott is fast, but Vela ain’t far behind, I wouldn’t start with Walcott because he has been better as impact sub and just seems to fade when he starts games and gets a rough challenge early on.
I just cant see Rosicky putting in a decent performance against Spurs regardless of being in the middle of on the left, if he starts I will support him and hope he can put in his best performance in the past 2 years.
With Vela is ALMOST the same feeling but as I said, is just that his pace that could provide us with a cross or a decent run that could lead to a goal.
Whatever team starts, I just hope we win this!

Just listening to the fall out from the chavs latest win. It seems to be all about them putting daylight between themselves & manu, with no mention of The Arsenal. I really hope Le Gaffer has taken note of this & gets the boys right for the Spuds game. Moving into 2nd may just show the know alls that the chavs are in our sights 😈

All true GG, but what cannot be denied is that Terry is one hell of a player. The best defender of his generation IMO
There was talk of Terry coming to Arsenal when he was a pup with TA saying he was his natural successor. Despite the approach Terry chose to stay at Chelsea – which was an early indicator of the man he has become!

I think Nasri is a little bit better. In a few years he will be one of the best players in the world. I have many friends that support teams outside the premierleague and they all think that Nasri is absolutley fantastic! Many people that support a premierleague club tend to underestimate him, exept for Arsenal fans ofcorse 😛

I think Nasri is fantastic, but if I had to rely on a player to perform in a big game, I would have to go with Rosicky. Nasri has developed fast this season especially considering he broke his leg i summer.
