Danish Nick Saves Our Bacon.

This supporting a football team and watching them play malarkey is supposed to be an enjoyable experience.  Well, I don’t know about you, but with ten minutes to go the description of nerve racking nightmare struck me as being more appropriate. Stress, tension, anxiety, nervousness — the rollercoaster ride that is called our season was plummeting down towards destruction when just at the last minute Nicky scored sending our hopes flying back up. Suddenly, with adrenalin pumping like a steam train and Phil Brown’s priceless look utter despair; the world was, once again, a wonderful place to be.

Arsenal took to the field full of confidence picking up from where they left off against Porto, their fast, free flowing football left Hull chasing shadows. I liked the team selection it struck me that Wenger has done away with favouritism and is making his decisions on merit alone. There was a time when Walcott would have been a banker to start today but Eboue was far more worthy of a starting place. Sol seemed the perfect choice to deal with Hull’s slow lumbering attackers with their potential aerial threat and so it proved. The rest of the back line picked itself as did the midfield. There was only one choice for the number nine spot and then there was Arshavin.

It took our Russian box of tricks precisely fourteen minutes to not only highlight the gulf in class between Arsenal and Hull but fourteen minutes to show the gulf between himself and every other player on the pitch. Picking the ball up he weaved his way through the Hull defence, his low sense of gravity coming into its own, leaving two defenders in his wake, the ball sat up perfectly, crying out to be stroked into the net; the Russian maestro obliged and we were one up.

It was time to sit back with a cold beer from the fridge and that was exactly what Arsenal did, the result being that their level of concentration started to dip. Hull were still having rings run round them and realising that playing football wasn’t going to get them anywhere they started, oh so predictably, to try and kick us into the air. This in itself did not look like it was going to trouble us but when they were wrongly awarded a penalty, subsequently scoring, Hull’s renewed hope was tangible the result being that we knew we were going to have a game on our hands.

Relief came in the form of Hull’s captain, who after having picked up a yellow for trying to gouge Bendtner’s eye out, he then, only five minutes later, tried to break Sagna’s leg which fortunately he failed to do but was given a second yellow and off he went on the stroke of half time.

It has been said many times that every game from now to the end of the season is a cup final and I take that to mean that if we lose just one game our title hopes are over. We had forty five minutes to stay in the race.

Diaby, Nasri and Arshavin’s hearts may have been in the right place but they were now playing like strangers, casual, sloppy passing increased the growing tension. Hull predictably started time wasting succeeding in creating further frustration.

The game cried out for changes and Wenger obliged, on Walcott came who immediately added urgency to our attack: within one minute he had carved the Hull defence apart and set up Bendtner for an excellent opportunity which just like last week with all Theo’s offerings Nick had too much time to think and fluffed the chance.  Walcott continued ripping Hull apart, setting up Arshavin with a glorious opportunity that he sent flying over the bar. It remained level and time was running out. Eduardo came on the perfect sub when the area is crowded; he added decisiveness to the attack: every pass found its man and importantly he took the pressure off of Bendtner.

The added impetus from the substitutes worked to a point but it still didn’t look like it was going to be out day. I was mentally writing the obituary at this point when the forth official lifted his board indicating six minutes of added on  time……….and then, in the distance a trumpet was heard, there was no mistaking it, our lives were saved, the cavalry had arrived: Denilson fired in a speculative shot from twenty five yards which their goalkeeper spilled; Bendtner in the right place at the right time, yet again, had no time to think about htis one  and instinctively put it into the back of the net giving us all three precious points and dispelling any doubts that may have crept into my head as to why I love football and more importantly why I love Arsenal.

Player ratings:

Almunia: it has to be said that he is doing a lot better, looked a tad more decisive which has helped to dampen the screams for a new keeper. 7

Sagna: a quality defender, yet again he did his job well.7

Campbell: Hull should never have been awarded a penalty it was off side but then lucky to stay on the pitch after it was given. 7

Vermaelen: he is such a winner, must surely be made vice captain next season. 7.5

Clichy: another commanding performance from our Gael. 8

Denilson: the 21 year old filled in for Song to the best of his ability, if Eboue can turn it around so can he, it was his shot that led to the goal. 6

Nasri: wow this man does not travel, I am going to give him the benefit and say he was tired after his magnificent midweek display. 6

Diaby: although, he has earned his starting place and had a perfectly good game I now want more, he should be totally dominating the midfield. 7

Eboue: another perfectly respectful game, some good runs and no star fish. 7

Bendtner: the man of the match and not just because he scored the all important goal, he was focused all the way through, not a single pass went astray which was no mean feat on that meadow they call a football pitch. 9

Arshavin: while this player is on the field we will always have a chance of winning. 8

Good work London. A very difficult match to evaluate dispassionately, given the undercurrents running through it, But the pictures you paint are fair and accurate.

I have to admit that it is unlike me to be the prophet of doom, but that is how I felt whilst watching the game, I could not see us scoring, in fact, I cursed Denilson when he shot, so what do I know.

I do know that these “professional” managers supposedly lovers of football. Love more the opportunity to supply a ploughed field like yesterday or a strangulated pitch like Stoke, anything to inhibit the playing of the game as it should be played.

Thankfully both of these “Dinosaurs” got their just rewards for the cheap gamesmanship, “Nil points”. Up the Arsenal, only eight Games to go.

Excellent report and analysis of the game,London though perhaps I didn’t see that Eduardo made much of an impact.

You highlight what I have said many times before that like wine, Nasri doesn’t travel well. It was always going to be a difficult game.Hull fighting relegation, we knew would get stuck in and the pitch looked like an American Football pitch, with the addition of bumps.

Wenger is using his subs a lot better and at the right time as well. Song and Cesc were dearly missed, and I think we had all settled for a disappointing draw.

I have always maintained that it is just as difficult to beat 10 men as it is 11.

One thing we must do more often is to fire long range shots aimed at the keeper, especially as the ball moves so much nowadays and added to the uneven surface like yesterday there is always a chance of a spill.
3 points in the bag, a week to get over it and then West Ham.

  6. Morning all

What a great post London – that was a scary afternoons football, mind you I had been saying for a couple of weeks that I thought the game against Hull would be tough.

Using Theo as a sub was a canny move and he really shook everything up when he came on. I thought the team definitely looked tired.

I wish Diaby remembered he has a great shot as he got into a couple of good positions yesterday and could have bagged himself a goal.

    Morning all, morning Goonerella 😉

London, I think that is your best match report to date. I agree about Nasri, how can he be so sublime one week and anonymous the next? I don’t know what a manager can do when a player has this form of split footballing personality.

Sick n tired of the Skysports anti Arsenal bias, I sent this email regarding their INACCURATE & DISHONEST report of our match vs Hull to u2us@skysports.com It’s about time Arsenal fans deluged Sky with complaints about their anti Arsenal bias & dishonesty…………
‘Your report on the Hull vs Arsenal match which you broadcast every hour is factually DISHONEST as follows …………. With regard to Hull player Zayatte’s injury, the reporter says that a freekick was awarded but no yellow card to Sol Campbell. WRONG !! A free kick was not awarded to Hull City , play had continued until being stopped for treatment to Zayatte. Play was resumed with Arsenal having the ball back in their possession. Correctly it was therefore NOT a foul by Campbell & therefore a potential yellow card was not an issue. In any case it is clear that it was a fair tackle & therefore mischief making by Skysports who are continuing their usual negative & Arsenal bias. A copy of this email will be sent on to the Press Complaints Commission & Arsenal Football Club as this DISHONEST & INACCURATE broadcasting is unacceptable. Kindly have the decency to amend your broadcast accordingly’

London. You definitely have a future as a journo. This is the best report I have read today. Well done.

Whilst agreeing that Arshavin is undroppable and is capable of changing a game in 10 seconds, I thought he was poor yesterday. After the goal he disappeared, not only that but he was symbolic of the shambolic mispassing that followed in the second half. Perhaps he is playing out of position, but so what?

As one of our most experienced players, it is part of his job to inspire and help the youngsters. Instead he went missing.

II also agree with Kelsey about Eduardo. I just didn’t see his contribution, but by then I was a bag of fidgety nerves, so perhaps I have misjudged him.

  15. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

    Morning Raddy,

Do you remember a few weeks ago before Nik returned from injury, I listed Nik, AA and Cesc as the 3 players who could make the difference in the title chase and you said I was expecting too much of the young Dane. I know you are his biggest fan on here.

BTW – leave my little Russian mate alone 😛 DB went missing for long spells in games too, but we loved him for the magic. You can’t teach a player that, they’ve either got it or they haven’t.

  16. Erik the Red's avatar Big Raddy says:

There are some on other sites who must be red faced about their negativity to NB 🙂

But let us be clear – he is nowhere near the finished article. He makes poor decisions and is first touch has to improve. But for a 21 y.o. I think he is great.

I just want more from the Russian !!

  17. K-TR7's avatar K-TR7 says:

We missed rosicky/cesc/both yesterday.we all love nasri but cesc/mozart are our real midfield generals.nasri needed at least one of them to assist him in controlling the midfield.if we had both players hull would’ve been dismantled.combine this with nasri’s poor away form and denilson being overpowered diaby had to do the job of three men and i thought he was solid but not spectacular.

  18. dandan's avatar dandan says:

Just remember apart from the Tapas waiter, the first choice spine is missing from our team and yet we are still there. The press never seem to mention this. Speaks volumes for Mr Wenger and his methods

  19. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

    Welcome K-TR7,

I agree we definitely missed Cesc yesterday. I thought Nasri’s performance last week when Cesc went off was amazing and of course his goal against Porto was superb. Rosicky is a strong tackler but it appears he still can’t play the 90 minutes. Worryingly, Diaby seems to have taken a small step backwards IMO, but I’d still start most games with him. Sometimes I wish he’d just keep going when he surges forward but he seems to always looks to pass instead of shooting.

  20. K-TR7's avatar K-TR7 says:

Rasputin-i think diaby was overworked yesterday.nasri and denilson were losing possession all over hence diaby had to cover alot of ground.diaby was abit hesitant to make decisions and i wish he shot more since he has a rocket in him.AA needs to practice on finishing the whole week.RVP carried us through first third of the season, cesc in second third and in the final third AA is looking really dangerous.i wish he stops abit casual at times.clichy is back!

  21. Erik the Red's avatar Big Raddy says:

Rasp. That is harsh on Diaby. I think he was superb v Porto and OK yesterday. He has obviously been told not to be so adventurous in a MF with Nasri and Denilson, probably because Denilson doesn’t play DM as well as Song.

I believe Diaby is going to be a huge player for us. He and Song add the physical stature to our MF, with both of them and NB, we cannot be considered a bunch of lightweights!

  22. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

True K-TR7, I’m not going to knock Denilson, because he was selected and did his best, but when the others are fit, for me, he’s a bench player who should be used to give the other midfielder’s a rest when the game is won. Having said that….. if it hadn’t been for his shot (and some very poor goalkeeping) we wouldn’t have won yesterday.

  23. dandan's avatar dandan says:

I felt our biggest problem yesterday was the lack of quality in our passing, how much the pitch had to do with this I really dont know, but that final pass going behind the man rather than in front drives me crackers

  24. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

We were definitely jaded yesterday dandan. What do you think Arsène can do to try to get Nasri to replicate his home form in away games?

  25. K-TR7 – agree about Clichy being back. Whatever it was that caused his dip in form he seems to have got over it. We’ve learnt to depend on his reliablity and when that went out the window there were a few gaffs on the left-side.

AA is really dangerous and with him on one side and Theo cutting in from the right we’re a scary team to defend against.

  26. K-TR7's avatar K-TR7 says:

I think we have surprised teams up north by how strong physically we have become.if we had our full team yesterday we would’ve eaten them alive.Almunia looked calm and solid hence the improved defense;hull except the penalty had no other shots on target.theo was really buzzing yesterday and looked spectacular at full speed.he would’ve had a hatrick of assists if we had our shooting boots on.hull had not lost at home since october vs utd so this was a massive victory, they drew chavs and beat mcity.we have a full 11 vs wham bar rvp&gallas,we should steamroll them.

  27. SHOULD WIN MORE PENALTIES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. Alfa's avatar Alfa says:

Rasp, Diaby and Song were on fire against Porto – what makes you think Diaby has taken a step back?

  29. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

A small step backwards Alfa 🙂 only that he seems less inclined to have a shot and there are still one or two hospital passes, but he gets my vote for most improved player. I was a critic of his (or at least of his selection) last year, but I’m a convert to the Diaby fanclub now.

  30. K-TR7's avatar K-TR7 says:

Peaches-Against westham AW will really have a selection problem.imagine:bendtner,AA,TR7,nasri,denilson,cesc,diaby,vela,theo and eduardo vying for five spots.eboue may start at rb to scare the crap out of west ham defence.Bendtner has the kind of arrogance like cr9 but they both seem to revel in it.nikki really turns up in away games and if he can learn to take shots first time he will reach 15 goals or more before the season ends.if AA cuts on the sloppiness and slack finishing combined with coming into form of AA,TR7,nasri,fab,diaby,clichy we can really make this year special.RVP must be itching to be fit!

  31. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

    K-TR7

It all seems to be coming together at the vital time doesn’t it? We’ve got results in difficult games whilst missing key players. We’ll be much stronger in the next few weeks (I pray). We got to the CL final with Flamini filling in at left back and we shouldn’t forget Maninger’s heroics when covering for Seaman – history seems to be repeating itself.

  32. K-TR7's avatar K-TR7 says:

Rasp-Eboue’s competition also seems to have forced sagna to improve his crossing.i’m so glad gael is back considering AA doesn’t offer much protection compared to manu/morzart.mozart also seemed to be enjoying his football;his movements, skills and turns against porto were sublime to watch and he was part of the reason we dominated in the first half.he really seems to have a telepathic understanding with all our attacking players.he also works really hard, has a bullet of a shot, is one of our best tacklers and is a leader on the pitch.more of the same rosicky!he deserves it after the injury hell he has been through.i pity AW if we were to reach a final which team he would pick if all players were fit but thats what he is paid to do.

  33. K-TR7's avatar K-TR7 says:

Why did bendtner get a yellow anyway.did the ref see it as bendtner headbutting boateng’s fingers or what?if AA steps up to A-game there is no stopping us.verminator is a semilegend by now!

  34. tommystout's avatar tommystout says:

wow match of the day saw the incidents correctly, go shearer, go hanson…. thinks the bbc are eating their words about us now and think we can do it! Talk about trying to save face!
eboue is top drawer at the moment, no wonder sagna is crossing like beckham…
One thing about denilson cos we all like to have a go, his long distance shooting has paid dividends for us on more than one occasion this season.

  35. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

It seemed unfair for Bendtner to get a yellow. He nudged/hit/karate chopped Boateng on the back of the head before he was gouged in the eye and I guess the lino must have told the ref that. Boateng should have got a straight red.

  36. tommystout's avatar tommystout says:

Would be very good for Fulham to knock two bells out of MU today, but sadly there is little likelihood.

Fulham are away after a long game in Turin.

Still, perhaps Rooney will further damage the strain he is supposed to be carrying. One can only hope!

  41. K-TR7's avatar K-TR7 says:

Den has everything to make him a top mf:passing, shooting, tactical awareness but lacks body strength and pace making it easier to brush him aside and leave him for dead.he started the season on fire scoring a scorcher vs everton until he started getting back injuries which also derailed clichy but look at him now, don’t write him off yet.he is also along with rosicky who dares to shoot from distance,AA used to but not anymore.this has led to alot of important goals and i hope fans don’t forget that.we should shoot more considering how modern footballs move alot midair.

  42. Big Raddy's avatar Big Raddy says:

Sadly the qualities you give to Denilson add up to a good squad player – nothing more, and at his career stage perhaps he would be better off in Spain where there is not so much need for strength and speed.

Quite honestly. Ramsey was already ahead of him in the pecking order. I like Denilson, he has potential but not enough for The Arsenal

  43. K-TR7's avatar K-TR7 says:

BigR-Denilson is a good squad player thats all i’m saying especially against smaller sides.people expect him to be next cesc while he’s not, don’t boo him, support him so long as he pulls on the red and white jersey.he also needs to bulk up.fab4 may be our talisman but rvp and AA are our aces.AA is an infuriating little genius who has the potential to score a hatrick in a cl final.when all three flicker on,no defence can stop them.rvp get well soon.

  44. kelsey's avatar kelsey says:

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has once again declared he does not know when William Gallas will return from his calf injury but is confident the French defender will make the World Cup.

The 32-year-old defender, who is out of contract at Arsenal at the end of the season, has not played since the 1-0 victory over Liverpool in February due to a calf injury.

In an interview with L’Equipe today, Wenger said: “Sometimes the legs are a mystery. Scans showed nothing serious but whenever he starts to force it a little he has a relapse.”

The Arsenal boss continued: “The injury has come back twice. This means that it is worse than it seems and we must be careful. We pushed a little too much and he was in a hurry.”

When questioned further Wenger reassured L’Equipe that “France should not be worried about June… he has no damage to fibres, just a little tension between two muscles.”

In 2009/2010, Gallas has played 33 games for Arsenal, scoring four goals and he has also received two yellow cards.

I smell a rat somewhere in this article.

however, this is not akin to the clear th14 conspiracy of not playing again before being flogged FOR a profit.

I never assume anything in life. With regards to Gallas who knows. he has shown a variety of emotions since the Birmingham game last season, lost the captancy, but has had a good season, especially with the pairing with Vermaelen.
Will he get a two year deal at his age, don’t know. Sol I believe is on a pay as you play arrangement. Then one has to consider the return of Djorou and Senderos is still out on loan(but I think he will benefit from a different club, as he surely doesn’t feature in Wenger’s plans .)

So I don’t know the answer.

but when discussing the 71 double winning side… they said if a full back of his quality was around today.. real madrid would pay any price to get him.

  71. kelsey – i would suggest all three teams want the Diamond double, as opposed to just wanting one or the other.

  72. read this… and revel in the utter feelings of chardenfreude

Phil Brown (17/3/09) after the linesman failed to spot an offside in the buildup to a goal conceded against Arsenal. “We’ve not been beaten by Arsenal, we’ve been beaten by the referee and the linesman. The game was turned on its head when the referee succumbed to local pressure. You’d better ask Mike Riley how much that will cost us. I’m sure he wouldn’t have the faintest idea.”

Phil Brown (13/3/10) on Hull being awarded a penalty by the referee after the linesman failed to spot Vennegor of Hesselink in an offside position. “It may have been offside but as long as that linesman’s flag doesn’t go up then it’s not offside.”

  82. kelsey – wires crossed? there was only one geordie armstrong.. most gooners recall him well enough.

he was a full back for the club before he was pushed further forward… but he was the original cafu/carlos type attacking full back.

  83. i think it was bob wilson who has talking about him…

  84. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

………”Over his long career with the Gunners, Armstrong became one of Arsenal’s most consistent players, who was noted for the quality and accuracy of his crossing and corner kicks, as well as for his tireless running up and down the wing; he primarily played on the left, but was also effective on the right. As he matured, he became one of the few players of the Billy Wright era (along with Jon Sammels and Peter Storey) to become an integral part of Wright’s successor Bertie Mee’s Arsenal side, which ended the club’s long trophy drought.”

  85. Rasp – we forgot to celebrate our 5,000th comment today – never mind roll on 10,000 😆

  86. kelsey's avatar kelsey says:

I saw him play a hundred times on the wing, never a full back unless i am going senile 😉

  87. kelsey, he was clearly fames for becoming a fearsome winger, especially during the 71 double side

but he played as a full back for the reserves and a hand full of first team starts in the early 60s

this was bob wilson ( i think ) talking about him, he described him as the forerunner to the modern attacking full back.

but back under bertie mee… that type of full back would not have been right, a very tight rigid back four.. so he was developed as a winger.

    successfully. 😉

I am too young to remember the early sixties SH

  89. same, thank god for other peoples memories 😆

I’m with Kelsey on the Geordie Armstrong as RW.

What a weekend of sport! Footie, Rugby, cricket and F1.

  92. LB's avatar London says:

You are full of suprises SFH

When I read that you thought Armstrong was a full back I thought that you had just made an understandable mistake but when you said that he used to play full back I thought I am glad I kept my mouth shut. lol

I heard that Armstrong died while working for Arsenal mid training session with a group of younger players.

  93. BR – we are all with kelsey on Geordie being a RW.. and a LW to boot.

but he was also a very attacking full back in his early arsenal days.

similar to willy g being a striker in his early footballing days.. as was Cashley.

gibbs has gone the other way, from winger to full back.. but that is symptamatic of modern football with bombing full backs.

  94. LB's avatar London says:

I dont understand why you don’t take a picture of Armstrong from the same era as Big Raddy’s photo of John Radford. That’s the way I remember them……I can just hear you saying: why the f…k don’t you do it yourself then. I’ll be off then 😉

  95. i think that was the point bob was eluding to vis-a-vis real madrid paying any amount for him in this day and age.

never saw the man play live, but he certainly knew how to whip a ball right on to raddy’s forehead.

  96. LB's avatar London says:

    SFH

Are you serious or are you pulling our legs? George Armstrong a full back…….naah.

  97. as london suggests..

  98. LB's avatar London says:

You are not wrong about his ability to cross a ball.

  99. LB's avatar London says:

    Good pic SFH

  100. london – if anybody is pulling anybody’s leg… it must be bob wilson.

    i somehow doubt it.

    william gallas a striker? naah

  101. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

Peaches isn’t doing her job 😳 otherwise you’d be able to see his image – should look a lot like SFH’s (only Geordie Armstrong)

  102. dandan's avatar dandan says:

Hi all, been out to dinner for mothers day so missed your interesting debate

Geordie was my fav player, I don’t remember him as a fullback, just as the little guy with the wonderful engine that tracked up and down sending glorious crosses over for Ray, Raddy, George and Charlie.

This on pitches that would have made yesterdays meadow at hull look like a bowling green. He did this whilst having his legs scythed from under him two or three times a game

  103. dandan's avatar dandan says:

HEHEHE got me a piccy, thanks Peachy you are a diamond

  104. dandan's avatar dandan says:

Geordie died while collecting cones and stuff at end of training, despite the best efforts of physios and staff he was DOA at hospital.

  105. !!BECKAM OUT OF WORLD CUP!!

torn his achillies this evening playing for milan.

    pressure off theo.

  106. dandan's avatar dandan says:

That’s a shame,He may well announce his retirement now if its a bad tear. Bet they still take him as part of the back up team his presence in the dressing room is a bonus by all accounts

  107. said to be devastated… his entire reasoning for playing over the last 4 years has been to go to SA.

    real shame.

  108. guys and gal.. you want to sign up SharkeySure as soon as you can… he would be a wonderful addition to this blog.

    the guy is very sharp.
