You don’t pay £65m and £250k/pw for someone to sit on the bench.

Just an idea of the sort of depth that Arteta and Edu are putting together at Arsenal right now. They’ve done a brilliant job of getting rid of the trouble makers and high earners and have put together a young squad which seems to be on the up. The days of key players running down contracts also seems to have to come to an end with the likes of Saka, Martinelli, Nelson, Nketiah and Saliba all signing long term deals recently. I don’t understand the issue with Turner as sub GK as he looks as capable as any other substitute GK in the PL. We could possibly do with someone who can play LB and LCB as cover for Zinchenko/Gabriel (if Tierney leaves), and another CM player would be nice if Partey was to go, but other than that we look all set. It would be good if we could see some real progress from a few youngsters this season aswell as we don’t currently appear to have our next Saka/ESR/Nelson/Balogun group coming through to take the burden off future transfers.

It will be horses for courses in terms of selection and formation, so I won’t worry too much about who plays where, but I think the list above shows we are well covered in all areas without too much of a drop in quality if we get some injuries (LCB and LB having the least depth of quality imo).

Milinkovic-Savic appears to be on his way to Saudi Arabia. 28 years old and one of the better players in Italy. Was wanted by quite a few European clubs over the last 2 years. Another talent taking the money….

England U20 coach has gone to be Gerard’s assistant aswell.

Be plenty more that go before the window ends.

  4. allezkev's avatar allezkev says:

19 players have now departed Chelsea in this window, that’s quite some churn and shows how many players they were carrying and had out on loan…

  5. fatgingergooner's avatar fatgingergooner says:

    Allezkev,

Yet somehow, they spent all last season without a recognised CF, and are starting this season (as it stands) with midfield options of Fernandez, Gallagher, Chukwuemuka, Hall, Santos…..

    🤦🏼‍♂️😂

Looks like they will have to splash £100m on Caicedo from Brighton just to have 2 starting midfielders.

So far they’ve lost Mount, Kante, Kovacic, Loftus-Cheek, Zakaria, Havertz from those midfield options and bought strikers!

  6. LBG's avatar LBG says:

Agree NB. Let’s hope he proves to be another diamond mined from our neighbours.

  7. LB's avatar LB says:

Ok, I am not trying to be my usual argumentative self here but actually you can have Havertz on the bench irrespective of wages and signing fee; in fact, you can have anyone of the obvious starters on the bench, this is what has changed with the greater depth in squad. Rest and rotate to have fresher players for a better ending to this season in contrast to last.

“You don’t pay £65m and £250k/pw for someone to sit on the bench.”

PS. I would definitely start against Forrest with this team.

  8. allezkev's avatar allezkev says:

FGG, not having Putin’s front man Roman, writing off £100m of debt every season is becoming quite a problem for the Blues….

  9. LB's avatar LB says:

Do Chelsea have some Saudi connection, can anyone explain this to me…….if true?

  10. fatgingergooner's avatar fatgingergooner says:

    LB,

Chelsea were bought by a consortium of Todd Boehly & Clearlake Capital. Clearlake Capital also have dealings with the Saudi PIF, which is responsible for all the sports investment that Saudi Arabia are doing at the moment. However, it’s not thought that there is any direct investment from the Saudi’s in Chelsea.

Basically, Chelsea and the Saudi’s just happen to have a mutual friend…

  11. LBG's avatar LBG says:

I think what you are trying to say LB is, they will all sit on the bench at sometime in the future. Nobody ever thought you were argumentative! 😯 Controversially suggestive! Spice of life!

  12. LB's avatar LB says:

By the way RC, great choice of picture up there.

  13. RC78's avatar RC78 says:

We still had to acknowledge Xhaka…somehow. Conflicted legacy but still well-liked by his peers, all coaches and the club staff so cannot be that horrible…

  14. allezkev's avatar allezkev says:

Spending somewhere in the region of £208.5m is some statement by the ownership, I don’t have a clue how they do it but I’m very glad they have.

  15. RC78's avatar RC78 says:

Soares, Lokonga and Pepe are not going to the US with the team…so we can consider them out.

My predicted Out from the post: Okonkwo – Cedric, Trusty, Holding, Tavares – Xhaka, Lokonga – Vieira – Pepe, Balogun, Marquinhos + Runnarson

  16. fred1266's avatar fred1266 says:

Who signed soared that was such a pointless transfer had him on loan didn’t dey realise he not good since then

  17. fatgingergooner's avatar fatgingergooner says:

I think Partey might go aswell, although I’d rather he didn’t. The Saudis are paying £40m for Fabinho from Liverpool, so if we have the opportunity to get £40m-£50m for Partey at 30 years old then I think the club could be tempted having just paid out £200m with no returns as of yet. Having said that, if we did sell him then we’d need a younger replacement like Lavia who’s going to cost £40m anyway! It would be a good swap in terms of age profile of the player (with Lavia being 11 years younger) but I think I’d prefer Partey’s experience in the team this season. I hope he stays. It sounds like the Saudi money isn’t going anywhere anytime soon so maybe we could just cash in next season.

Just seen Benzema is being paid £3.3m per week!!!!! 😳 Firmino is (only!) on £350k a week! Think he needs a better agent. 😂

  18. allezkev's avatar allezkev says:

I wonder if some channel will televise the Saudi League, it could catch on?

  19. allezkev's avatar allezkev says:

Xavi Simons has rejoined PSG from PSV for £5m so that train has left the station, shame that…

  20. fatgingergooner's avatar fatgingergooner says:

They had a buyback clause for Simons didn’t they? Benzema could’ve bought him with his wages!!! 😂

I can see someone picking up the TV rights for the Saudi League. Pretty sure I remember Sky getting the Chinese rights when they started splashing the cash a few years ago.

Womans WC over here in oz. Watching our old womans Coach Joe on the TV comentary panel. Watching Australia start off with a win in front of 75K fans. Should be an interesting comp. Hoping Australia goes deep and knocks out England along the way, that would be fun.
Nice to be going to wembley again for the Charity Shield in about 2 weeks, can’t wait. It would be great to start the season with another trophy.

Hope everyone on here is good and look forward to another season of insight and banter, cheers👍

    BTW
“Stand-in captain Steph Catley has stepped up from the spot as the Matildas overcame the loss of Sam Kerr to edge Ireland 1-0 in a physical FIFA Women’s World Cup opener on Thursday night.”

Steph plays for Arsenal alongside Caitlin Foord who had a great game as well.
Great seeing Arsenal pedigree leading Australia and Steph’s penalty goal was world class, you all need to watch it👍

  29. allezkev's avatar allezkev says:

Ginger Gooner, you’ll not be surprised to see the Chelsea churn increase to 22 players departed.

  30. RC78's avatar RC78 says:

I don’t believe that Havertz can step in for Xhaka but I do believe that Rice will be an improvement on Xhaka so the way I see our midfield is:

    Starters: Partey, Rice – Odegaard
Back-Up: El Neny, Jorginho – Havertz

We need to somehow also look into what we are going to do with F.Vieira and S.Lokonga. Vieira on loan and Lokonga to Strasbourg or Marseilles?

In any case, Havertz needs time to adjust and at this stage, we need him closer to the box rather than coming from deeper in midfield. He makes good runs, has a decent pass and shot in him but he cannot defend spaces yet – he is good at pressing but not defending on the back foot…

    COYG!

  31. fatgingergooner's avatar fatgingergooner says:

I’d be very shocked if Mbappe decided to go to Saudi Arabia. I imagine he’ll just sit out the season (or go out on loan if they can find someone to pay his wages) and join Real for free. Why they have bid £259m though is beyond me!!! They could’ve stuck £100m in and PSG would accept. They’ll take whatever they can get for him now I imagine.

  32. allezkev's avatar allezkev says:

Burnley is still an option for Lokonga as long as the Clarets offer a realistic deal and not some kind of wishy-washy loan without an obligation to buy at the end of it, after all Kompany thought highly enough of him to make him his team captain if I recall…

  33. SeeDee's avatar SeeDee says:

Any idea why Rice wasn’t in the squad last night against Barca? Sounds like a good performance against a very decent side. Also a little bit concerned with Balogun not featuring at all too… How can he prove himself in pre season if he’s not getting gametime. At least give the lad a chance.

  34. seedeee's avatar seedeee says:

ah nevermind, looks to be a minor calf issue for Rice

  35. LB's avatar LB says:

Is it only me or have the Saudis made PSG redundant, I mean, the reason for big name players such as Neymar and Messi going there was for the money but now players thinking like that can earn far more by playing in the Saudi League. Surely the only coarse of action is for PSG is to develop a very young team like Barça for example; although, I have my doubts as to just how far that will go as PSG don’t have the history to draw players such as Gundogan to supplement a young team or am I missing something?

  36. fred1266's avatar fred1266 says:

5-3 against Barcelona first 2 goals was a bit unlucky especially second one but ramsdale not being his great self is a bit worrying

Nice to see partey play really hope he stays

Still mixed signals about Havertz, cause h not doing to well defensively

Would love if mikel tried the partey rice combination

  37. fred1266's avatar fred1266 says:

I agree a bit RC but just from WH rice was the more stay back CDM hence why I feel partey should be the more advanced aka Soucek

  38. allezkev's avatar allezkev says:

Looks as if Arsenal’s two Americans could riding off into the sunset, I just hope that Edu can maximise a decent return for them, £5m for Trusty looks cheap, too cheap and I’ve not seen a figure quoted for Turner yet but I think that Man Utd were looking for over £20m for Henderson, maybe up towards £30m?

  39. allezkev's avatar allezkev says:

I guess that the reported £40m wanted by Brentford for Raya gives us a clue on values?

  40. fred1266's avatar fred1266 says:

Henderson and Turner not even on the same class, never had any first team experience , still interesting we replacing with Raya

  41. allezkev's avatar allezkev says:

Actually Fred, Dean Henderson played around 54 Premier Leagues over two seasons with Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest, he was also in goal for Sheffield United when they won promotion from the Championship three years ago…

  42. fred1266's avatar fred1266 says:

That the point am making Turner not in same class as Henderson,

  47. fatgingergooner's avatar fatgingergooner says:

Such a shame we can’t start every game with 12 players because I would love to see Trossard more involved. Reminds me a bit of Rosicky with the way he can link with the front man from the sides and get shots away. A really intelligent player who impacts the games when he comes on. Seems to score/create important goals aswell which is always a great asset to have.

  48. VP's avatar VP says:

Great win. Going to penalties I was so confident that we would win it.
Trossard is such a good player
