Why is Villa trying to snatch ESR from us?

Major reasons why Arsenal must build around Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe and Selling the pair will be unacceptable - Martin Samuel - EPL Fans

I can’t remember which pundit but one of them said that if ESR wants to grow and improve, he has to leave AFC…I wholeheartedly disagree with him and actually the guy should just stop sharing his advice in the public space…

AFC is the perfect place for ESR for many reasons:

  1. It is his club – he is a Gooner
  2. There is a sense that Arteta trusts him and wants to make him a key player in our squad
  3. He is the new and fresh face of AFC with Saka and Tierney since X-Mas and has enjoyed a good second half and we hopefull could add Martinelli to that list very soon
  4. Why would he leave AFC for a team like Villa?

Villa can try all they want, AFC will just offer a good contract to ESR and keep him so everyone should just back off. AFC needs his quality and also needs him as one of our Home-Grown players so there is very little chance to let him go, let us just tie him up to a good contract similar to Saka’s and Tierney’s and end of speculation about his future.

Leno – Holding, White, Gabriel – Chambers, Partey, ESR, Tierney – Saka, Martinelli, Pepe

Not super balanced but appetizing line-up 🙂

First Martinez for a steal , then Buendia we were outbid apparently and now they think that we are just a push over .

  2. potter says:

maybe we should offer £25 million for Grealish.

  3. Dexter says:

It would suggest that Villa are really worried Grealish is off.

Also if ESRs agents are like 99% of football agents then they’ll be actively encouraging these types of rumours (let’s face it, that’s all they are, regardless of how much air time Sky Sports give to the story), to maximise their clients when and their own commission.

I can’t see him leaving, but Arsenal need to get him signed to a new long contract, as well as signing new players.

Maybe ESR is waiting to see who Arteta and Edu sign, as he may be worried about his starting spot, or having to play out of position, which I think he did as Odegaard was played in his favoured position.

  4. CorporateMan says:

I just hope ESR and his camp have not been giving those people at Villa Park something to smoke in the form of some encouraging signals.
Thank God Arsenal’s hands are strong here. ESR has all of two years on his contract. Time enough to consider all options.
For me, if ESR fails to sign a new deal this summer and wants to leave, then either
    1. Set a price for him. Every player has a price; or
    2. Keep him for one more season, and if by the end of it he still hasn’t committed, sell and replace him

  5. Sue says:

He’ll sign on the dotted line, that I’m certain of.
Villa’s 30m bid is laughable!!! (Bugger off!)

  6. Jd says:

Because villa certainly believe they are on the rise than arsenal after all, they did a double on arsenal last season, arsenal have decided to drop their fear factor, mid table at the best, does the coach strike fear to the other team? U can answer that urself but arsenal right now is looked onto as a good also ran at its best, can Villa ever contemplate going to Liverpool , city or Chelsea to destabilise any of their youth prodigy?? Never? Can anyone honestly see arsenal, go to a top team and try price out one of their young upcoming star??

  7. Sue says:

Hi RC.. what are your thoughts on Nuno Tavares of Benfica?

  8. LBG says:

Because he has a top quality future, and Villa have aspirations above their status, which will be clear next season.

  9. RA says:

The careers of even the best players are relatively short, and they all want to safeguard that career in order to earn as much money as they can, while they can, and if that means moving on – they will.

I doubt that Emile has any intention of moving on as he knows how much the club, and the fans, know he is very talented and have enjoyed watching him play, and have made it clear they want him to stay at Arsenal.

There are two factors that could cause problems, however.

First, Arteta has made it clear that he wants to buy quality players in the transfer window, and it depends on which positions they would play in, and whether that would concern ESR if they were to compete with him.

Secondly, Villa are obviously going to sell Grealish for huge money – and as usual, money talks — so they might be happy to put financial pressure on Arsenal by offering them a knee buckling fee for 20 year old ESR (say £50m – that Villa would get back – and more, eventually, and also offer ESR a fortune he might find difficult to refuse – especially if he had doubts about his position at Arsenal.

As I said, above, I doubt ESR wants to leave, and more especially if he gets a new bigger contract at Arsenal, and reassurance from Arteta that his place in the team is secure.

However that’s a lot of “iffs ands and buts” in a dubious and callous industry like professional football – so who knows?

  10. fred1266 says:

Well after we gave them emi dey just think we are idiots

  11. fred1266 says:

Let me answer that one sue, on another wasted transfer fee

  12. fred1266 says:

This whole villa debacle is our fault, if we had just beaten them in 19/20 season day would have gotten relegated

    Problem solved

  13. RC78 says:

Nuno Tavares is a good prospect for sure but if we are going for a LB, why don’t we try to get Benfica’s number one LB, namely Grimaldo? He is actually quite good, very good going forward and crossing but would need to beef up physically as well as defensively….For me, if we poach at Benfica, we need to poach their starters not their bench warmers 😛

  14. Le Coq Monster says:

I`m afraid that it`s the silly season of The Transfer Window Lickers and we have to take this with a piece of salt…………ESR is going no where, there`s more chance of a spud getting Vitamin D over exposure in our shadow!
Talking of the Spuds, the other day it was announced that Arsenal FC were going to give a free stadium tour for anyone who had a covid vaccine at The Emirates!………it is now reported that The Spuds are now offering a free stadium tour if anyone has a vaccine at The Haringay Toilet Bowl, but they will have to do it via a detour into Daniel Levy`s office for a first team managerial job interview!

The Tottnumb Varient is said to be more infectious than the Alpha one with symptons of colour blindness, delusion, a strong urge to have a Ralph Coates combeover and a calender dating back to 1961!

  15. 1979Gunner says:

As cheeky as is seems to Arsenal fans, face it, what is the issue here? A club showing a bit of ambition. The say a talented player and make an offer – so what.

OK the offer I’d derisory but at least they didn’t offer £30, 000, 001.

  16. LBG says:

Chance for your man again to prove his quality tonight!😁

  17. Dexter says:

It’s so difficult to know what’s actually going on with regard incoming and outgoings. It seems clear Xhaka, Lucas, Saed and Matteo are off, while others get linked with exits too, like Hector, Bernd, never mind Emile!!

While we have been linked with about 90 players already! For me, I think we have a decent squad, it needs trimming and some quality additions added to it, obviously!

However, we also have some really talented young players and that’s where Arteta and Edu will earn their corn: giving the home grown players enough chances, while ensuring performances improve and we actually win games! And also adding to the squad, improving it, but not at the expense of the likes of Saka, Emily, Martin Elly!

I mean, we really struggled to create last season and while Emile did great, we are apparently looking for a new number 10, who would presumably expect to play.

Then we have Willock, who had a brilliant loan at Newcastle, while our big money midfield signing, Partey was poor and inconsistent. Can we accommodate both, keep em happy or will one depart? I hope we keep Joe, plus we need more home grown players anyway.

We’re also after a back up LB and it’s a shame we don’t have anyone in the squad (apart from Saka), who can play there without drastically affecting the quality of the defense.

On the other flank Hector keeps getting linked to clubs. But, unless someone offers us £30m+ for him, we should keep him, or try and get a decent swap. He’s been a fantastic servant, but maybe it’s time for him to move on?

We do seem over stocked in that position, and I think Chambers should be first choice RB, with either Soares or AMN to compete with him. Altho I feel Ainsley has been poorly advised for a long time now, making demands about where he has to play, etc. Its really sad, not least as he was excellent in the fullback positions for Arsenal and hardly registered when playing in midfield for West Brom.

He will most likely leave due to his unrealistic expectations and shite advise!

But if I could, I’d keep AMN, Whillock, and sell Soares,, Bellerin, Xhaka, Kolasinac,
    Torreira, Guendouzi, Willian.

And Loan Nketia, Saliba and Nelson to PL clubs and let’s see what they can do when played regularly in the Premier League.

    Easy innit! 🤣

  18. Dexter says:

Oh and putting in a piss take offer for a player you know will be rejected out of hand and leaking it to the media isn’t a show of ambition, its just a club trying to either: appease fans, get season ticket sales up, seem relevant, acting up and taking the piss. Or a combination!

  19. LBG says:

    Dexter
Your last last is spot on, sir!

  20. RC78 says:

My Euro is already over…Good luck to England…

France did not deserve anything in this Euro. Our defensive set-up except in the first game has been a disaster…We can only play in a 4321 set up with:

Lloris – ?, Varane, FOFANA, Hernandez – Pogba, Kante, Rabiot – Griezmann, Mbappe – Benzema

Our full-backs have been a disaster and Mbappe has been off target. He really fluffed it

We need to basically get a good right full back and then start Fofana ahead of Kimpembe. I think Fofana is mature enough to be our defensive leader.

We have amazing quality but it s not a cohesive defensive unit. Pogba was amazing today though and I can’t believe Mbappe missed so many chances…

  21. RC78 says:

Rumors that Deschamps will leave and Zidane will replace him…

  22. LBG says:

So, your man’s brother and Pogba’s brother turned up yesterday to play, and France decided to give a player time and space his brother never, ever received in the Premier League. Well done Switzerland. Fully deserved.

  23. RC78 says:

I am not sure it is fully deserved to be honest…it is deserved but if you look at the overall stats and especially in extra-time, I d say that France was trying harder to win the game…

The main issue all along has been our defensive cohesiveness and this is where you realize the importance of a player like Matuidi who was playing left midfielder during the WC although he is more a defensive-minded midfielder…

Lloris – Pavard, Varane, Umtiti, Hernandez – Kante, Pogba – Mbappe, Griemann, Matuidi – Giroud = World Champions

We got hurt badly with Hernandez and Digne’s injury as we could not set-up properly and then, we did not have that player in midfield with Matuidi’s ability to break plays on the sides…

I think Deschamps has a lot to answer for because he never found the right formula…I am, however, confident that we will put a very good display at the WC2022 and that we could even lift the trophy in Qatar but it would require Fofana in the line-up and somehow, we have a year to find a better right back too…

    GK:
Lloris still has one WC in him and then behind him, we have Maignan, Costil, Areola, Lafont…

    Defenders:
At right back, we are struggling with both Pavard and Dubois so I believe that Mukiele will soon be given his chance
At left back, we are ok (if they re fit) with Hernandez and Digne and then there is also F. Mendy and Theo Hernandez too or even B. Mendy could come back
At centre back, we have Varane, Kimpembe and then we have players like J. Kounde, W. Fofana, Upamecano, Konate, Zouma (not a huge fan) and maybe Saliba and Todibo will also fullfil their potential…

    Midfielders:
Pogba, Kante, Rabiot is a good midfield and then we will have
Camavinga, Tchouameni, Aouar (even Douzi, maybe?) coming through soon plus T. Ndombele too…

    Forwards:
    Griezmann, Benzema, Mbappe plus
Coman, Dembele and then there is also Ben Yedder, Thuram, maybe even Giroud and then some players can always come back like Martial, Fekir…

As soon as you find the right defensive cohesiveness, this team can do damage. It could even be meaning to bench Griezmann, Benzema or Mbappe…What is needed is a win – and how we get there, it does not matter so much in such tournaments…

    WC2022:
    Lloris, Maignan, ?
Pavard, Mukiele, Varane, Kounde, Fofana,Kimpembe, Hernandez, Mendy
Kante, Tchouameni, Pogba, Camavinga, Rabiot, Ndombele (or Aouar)
Mbappe, Dembele, Griezmann, Benzema, Coman, Thuram (or Giroud)

Lloris – Mukiele, Varane, Fofana, Mendy – Pogba, Kante, Tchouameni? – Griezmann – Benzema?, Mbappe

This team could be hard to break for example…and then the back-ups would be good too:

Maignan – Pavard, Kounde, Kimpembe, Hernandez – Camavinga, Ndombele, Rabiot – Dembele, Giroud?, Coman

Anyways…still gutted but in the end, the one who goes through deserves to go through so well done Switzerland and I do hope they beat Spain

  24. RockyLives says:

There’s a lot of nonsense talked about the Emi Martinez transfer with fans saying we were mugged by Villa etc.

We got £18m for a second string goalkeeper who had just had an excellent cup run but who, prior to the that, had shown very little evidence of being a top stopper.

Meanwhile Leno, before the injury that gave Martinez his chance, was on course to be our player of the season and most fans were very happy with him (it’s only in the last season, after Emi’s departure, that the doubts about Leno have really grown).

Martinez’s great showing in the cup run meant we were left with two keepers, neither of whom was prepared to play second fiddle. One of them had to go and it was pretty much a toss up between them.

If we had sold Martinez before his cup heroics we would have been lucky to get £1.5m, so bringing in £18m was good business.

Hindsight is 20/20, so it’s easy now to say we should have kept Emi given what a great season he had with Villa.

But at the time the club made a very reasonable call in the circumstances, whether or not you agree with it.

As for Villa and ESR, I think Dexter has it right. They don’t really expect to get him, they’re just trying to signal ambition.

I’m encouraged by the fact that the cub has allegedly said we wouldn’t even sell him for £75m.

  25. RockyLives says:

Can’t say I’m sorry to see France go out (sorry RC).

I don’t find this group of French players very likeable and Mbappe’s diving and whining get on my nerves. The penalty miss couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy…

  26. LBG says:

    Rocky
Again spot on with Martinez sequence of events. And as for Agbonlahor and Colleymore “knowing” something more than everyone else about ESR. Wishful thinking. All they may be doing is upping the value of the new contract Emile takes. Without Grealish, Villa will be lacking next season, IMO.

  27. LBG says:

    RC
Sorry for you. The French performance for me was much like those of Dutch squads in recent decades. Disjointed for enough spells in the game to give opposition a sense they have a chance. The doggedness of the Swiss, especially up front, always looked like it might have a positive end result for them.

  28. LBG says:

Patrick Vieira getting closer to coming home. New manager of Crystal Palace.

  29. RockyLives says:

Big test for Paddy V. Let’s see how he does.

  30. Sue says:

    Saka starts!! ❤ Come on!!!!

Le Coq.. well it’s about time!! 😂

  31. fred1266 says:

    Come on Werner

  32. Sue says:

Well blow me down, we’ve only gone and knocked the Germans out… and Kane scored *hits the deck*
And Low is scratching and sniffing through his tears 🤣🤣 Well done Saka and Co….

  33. Dexter says:

    Rockeries

I agree on the Martinez stuff.

Also, didn’t he refuse to sign a contract unless he was guaranteed being 1st choice? Despite being qt the club years and only showing up during that cup run? He also only had a year left on his deal, so nearly 20 mill is great business.

He should’ve signed a new deal and fought for the number 1 shirt.

Leno is a quality keeper, but needs someone to keep him on his toes!

  34. 1979Gunner says:

Dexter’s point if fair enough but Villa have already usurped us this summer with Beunida. They believe they can compete financially with Arsenal. No doubt the offers for ESR are doomed to fail but I’ve said before, Arsenal sell – and imo oftentimes too cheaply (see Xhaka’s asking price) and fooliishly they are chancing their arm.

BTW, selling Martinez was great business.

  35. RC78 says:

Well done to England, particularly impressive defensive unit especially Stones, Phillips and Rice. This England team reminds me of France 2018…wishing you the same levels of success.

The perfect final for me at this stage would be Belgium-England
The second great final would be Belgium – Denmark (or Czech Rep)
The worse final would be Italy – Ukraine (or Sweden)

  36. RC78 says:

England’s main concern before the final would be Czech Republic or Denmark but I feel that Czech Republic would cause more trouble…

  37. allezkev says:

Thanks RC, maybe Rice will do a Manu Petit if Angleland reach the final, long way to go yet and Italy are dangerous as always.

  38. LBG says:

Comical Arseblog statistic, Thomas Partey is choosing his favourite no 5 next season, and following a few famous 5s – Steve Bould, Martin Keown, Kolo Toure and Thomas Vermaelen…..not sure the other four are quite so “famous” ( or competent), Ian Ure, Willie Young, Gus Caesar and Ian Selly, even if you are old enough to remember them ( and I am)!

  39. LBG says:

Interesting suggestion from “The Athletic”, that we have actually still been paying up to 90% of Mesut Ozil’s salary for the first six months of this year. Ends officially today – 30th June.

  40. LBG says:

20 years ago, Sol became a Gooner won two Leagues and three Cups and sealed legendary status.

  43. LBG says:

So Saliba will be with us for pre-season. Withdrawn from Olympics.

  44. fred1266 says:

So Wright saying we shouldn’t sell xhaka, sometime I wish ex players would just shutup

  45. fred1266 says:

Was it his decision to withdraw

U know what it is to withdraw just to make a impression on team and manager and he still doesn’t give you a chance

  46. LBG says:

    Fred
That is not clear. If Mikel has promised a chance to prove himself pre-season surely one would choose that rather than a fairly futile Olympics place.

  47. fred1266 says:

I personally find he should have gone to Olympic it a once a lifetime event

  48. LBG says:

    Fred
Not for someone of his age. If he is going to be a great, he will get another go at least, and how much will he play anyway? He is not first choice.

  49. fred1266 says:

    Good point LBG

  50. fred1266 says:

Good point LBG didn’t realise he wasn’t even first choice

  51. Sue says:

According to Ornstein, Saliba looks set to join Marseille on loan. The wait goes on to see him in red and white…

  52. fred1266 says:

Check him out in red and white dey sue not to shabby

  53. LBG says:

Despite the quality of the goals and some of the play, cheating Italians throughout and a referee determined to give them every decision. Disappointing comments as always from Keown on the “cheating” not “allpart of the game”.

  54. RC78 says:

Italians played very well int he first half before succumbing to their old habits with the cheating, diving, breaking plays and antics. I hope they do not win the Euro but they are looking good but I think both Spain and England could beat them.

CO England today! France crushed Ukraine in one game and then drew another during the qualifiers. I think England should pass them easily – they have a gap between their DM/CM and CBs that can be exploited. This is a game where either Rice or Philips could have a real influence going forward. Otherwise, this could be a great game for a player that loves to play in between the lines so if you play Sterling and Kane up front as a front too in a 352 set-up, both of them could cause havoc. If you stick to a 343, then I would like to see Foden or Grealish start ahead of our Saka just because Saka could be great coming into the game but again, I would say that Rashford or Bellingham could be super useful in this game…

Anyways, let us see what Southgate has in store for the game and am wishing you luck today

  55. RC78 says:

And yes it is true that Saliba is being closely monitored by Marseille…I don’t see the value of loaning him out to Marseille – if loaned out, should be to an EPL club. He has played enough in the French League already…

  56. RC78 says:

Wait I take it back, this is a game for Mason Mount…I totally forgot about him…lol

Play him as part of a 343 and I think Ukraine won’t recover

Pickford – Walker, Maguire, Stones – Trippier, Rice, Philipps, Shaw – Mount, Kane, Sterling

This team should start and Mount should basically come a lot inside to the center and Trippier should not be scared of overlapping.

If this team starts, I think you can win 2-1 or 3-1 but you will see the game through.

  57. fred1266 says:

Rumors has it dey are going back to a back four with sancho replacing saka so either mount or grealish behind kane

  58. fred1266 says:

  59. RC78 says:

Rice – Philips, both these players are going to be highly sought after
