Football at last …….. pre-match chat

At long last a return to proper football and a game at The Home of Football against a team in yellow. Who could ask for more?

Can we maintain our table topping brilliance against the Canaries? Of course, Norwich are in the bottom three with just 7 points and logic suggests that we will win. Big Raddy always hesitates to predict an easy 3 points but ……

Last season we got beaten 1-0 at Carrow Road and people (BR included) made much of the strength of the Norwich team who deserved their victory. They faded away but for a few weeks looked good, beating Man Utd, and drawing at Everton. They finished a creditable 11th and will be delighted should they repeat that feat.

I have been in Norfolk and visited Norwich this week, as such I know that it is 20 years ago this week since Norwich’s best ever result beating a superb Bayern Munich team 0-2 away and becoming the first foreign club to beat BM in the Munich Olympic stadium! Heady days indeed. FYI, we are the only foreign team to have beaten Munich at The Allianz (the Chavs drew).

Onto this afternoon….

Norwich: Their best player is the Cameroonian defender, Sebastien Bassong. He will be up against young Oliver Giroud and we must hope Bassong plays like he did for the Spuds. Ruddy is a fine keeper and will expect to have a busy afternoon. Norwich have failed to score in 7 of their last 11 away games but have scored in all of their previous 7 games against Arsenal which means our defence is sure to be breached!

With only 5 goals scored so far this season it is clear where Norwich’s problems lie. That and having a mutant as a manager. Please let this chump take over from AVB when he deserts the sinking ship that rots away down the Seven Sisters Rd.

Hughton might be a good manager but he remains a Spud and as we all know, once a Cock always a Cock.

Arsenal: All the interest will be on team selection. Should Ozil and Cazorla both be fit who will Mr Wenger pick in midfield? My guess is that one of Arteta or Flamini will be dropped and Santi will play on the left, we should not need two defensive MF’s at home to Norwich. But will Wilshere play?

I would like to see Vermaelen start a game or two and give one of our CB’s a rest. Koscielny played midweek, so perhaps he can sit on the bench.

My Team:

arse v nor

I expect Norwich to play fairly defensively – their confidence must be low and they do not really have a player to inspire them, but we have seen how a team who are well organised and compact can cause us problems at home. If we score early and play sensibly we really ought to win.

p.s. BR is hoping to watch the game in Budapest. Anyone have any idea if there is a Hungarian Gooners Bar??

  1. HI all

We’ll put the pitch payout it the post in a while.

  2. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gööner In Exile says:

I hate games where we are expected to win…..especially post an international break. Hopefully the lads have had time to reacquaint and play together.

Not sure if Santi should start, how much as he trained with Özil? Although given both are exceptional footballers who slotted in to our style of play it’s not hard to imagine how it will work ….it’ll be damn pretty!

  3. Mayor of the Woolwich's avatar Mayor of the Woolwich says:

Here’s hoping all cocks involved get roasted …Hughton and the spuds.

  4. Jamie's avatar Jamie says:

    Great pm Raddy.

Santi+Ozil is really mouth-watering but I’m a bit concerned about our lack of width. I think if we’re going to sign anybody this January it should be an established winger (particularly one who plays on the “wrong” side and scores plenty goals.

  5. LB's avatar LB says:

    Thanks for the pre-match BR.

The excitement today is as you say all about the team selection, but what ever it is one of Wenger’s eyes will be on Tuesday night.

  6. LB's avatar LB says:

Volunteer to write the match report wanted.

I know that sometimes I write the match report but tonight is my partner’s birthday and as such as soon as I return from the game I have to get ready and go straight out.

  7. Norfolk Gooner's avatar Norfolk Gooner says:

    Good morning to you all.

Well done BR, up to your usual high standard.

I think our team are at last getting to understand that no Premiership opposition can be taken lightly. OK, so Norwich are in the bottom three but that doesn’t mean they don’t pose a threat.

I want to see a strong start from our lot, no p*****g about gifting City an early confidence building goal, a strong start and a couple of goals before halftime.

    ————Szczesny—————-
    Jenks–Merts–Kos—Gibbs
    ——-Arteta—–Flamini
    Ramsey—Ozil—-Wilshere
    ————Giroud———–

  8. Norfolk Gooner's avatar Norfolk Gooner says:

    Jamie,

Sagna, when fit again, and Gibbs can give us enough width.

  9. arnie's avatar arnie says:

Great stuff BR. Santi may not play the whole game, I suppose. Also, have a slight preferance for Arteta and Flamster both playing. Verms could be back for the whole game, or maybe 70 mins. He did a full game in the intl break

  10. Jamie's avatar Jamie says:

Norfolk, but that leaves us in danger of being exploited by a fast break. And besides neither player can boast of being able to beat a defender effectively, something you would expect from an out and out winger.

  11. arnie's avatar arnie says:

Evonne: about yesterday, yes, silly indeed!!!!! late predictions: win all except Dortmund away (loss) and ManUre away (draw). Win against Chelski in Balamory Cup, but only on penalties.

  12. Thanks LB for that heads up 🙂

We’re going to need a volunteer to write the match report please. It adds greatly to my enjoyment of the day if I know that someone has already offered 😀 😛 😆

  13. LB's avatar LB says:

    BR

I really like your team up there, Jenkinson in place of Sagna is clever; he gives us much more going forward and that is surely what today should be all about.

  14. arnie's avatar arnie says:

LB/ BR: do not completely agree on Jenks going forward. Yes, he overlaps alomg the line, but appears to run out of ideas by the time he is level with the box. But improving fast….

  15. Chas's avatar Chas says:

In the Tavern and some female Naarwich fans were dismayed there was no rosay. So they had half and half red wine and white wine. Classy. 🙂

  16. Chas's avatar Chas says:

    Fine pre-match, BR. Thanks

  17. LB's avatar LB says:

    Arnie

I take your point and wouldn’t like to push too hard but I still think it has slightly more to do with the lack of intelligence in the eighteen yard box rather than a lack of ideas from Jenkinson.

  18. GunnerN5's avatar GunnerN5 says:

    LB,

I fail to understand your point, surely it’s intelligence that forms ideas?

  19. LB's avatar LB says:

    GN5

I was trying not to point the finger so blatantly at Giroud, but hey ho.

That said, Sagna would be my first choice RB by some distance on Tuesday.

  20. Chas its how i served it at my wedding 😀 Well to the locals anyway!

  21. GunnerN5's avatar GunnerN5 says:

    Oh – I see.

  22. GunnerN5's avatar GunnerN5 says:

Unbelievably they are televising the Swansea/Sunderland game and not Arsenal/Norwich here in Canada, it will be the first game in years that I will be unable to watch.

    How f****** dumb is that?

I’ll listen to the game on Arsenal player and watch the game tomorrow. How sad………………..

I don’t trust streams, so I keep away from them, maybe I’m just to careful?

  23. Oooohh Newcastle 2-1 up….looks like we can put ourselves TOTL on our own this afternoon

  24. GunnerN5's avatar GunnerN5 says:

Ten man Newcastle up 2-1 on Liverpool after 59 minutes.

  25. GunnerN5's avatar GunnerN5 says:

    2 minutes late………………

  26. GN5 I’d say streams are ok, if you have plenty of anti virus and ad blocker (for flash streams) installed. I use Sopcast which tends to be quite reliable, but am on a Mac OSX which worldwide has had 1 known virus in it’s long history…or at least very few, or some would say none as that wasn’t a OSX issue.

  28. jnyc's avatar jnyc says:

Good job as always Raddy – i would prefer to rest Ramsey, because all of his Wales minutes, also because he works so hard on the pitch, and he was showing a dead leg recently. I think he needs a rest more than anyone, and he may be our most important player to keep healthy this season. Rosicky is rested, so are Arteta and flamini. Why not take advantage of them not playing internationals.

  63. Thats a great save

  64. ärnie's avatar ärnie says:

what a fantastic move, Giroud, great save

  65. I should only have half an eye on the game as am way to busy with work, but the its hard to work with some of the passing on display.

I really like this Arteta/Flamini combo, i don’t think it’s defensive I think it allows the others to play with more freedom, and you really want Özil, Cazorla and even Jack playing with freedom.

Just think player of the season so far isn’t even on the pitch 😀 😀 😀

  66. Did Bacary just tell Szczesny he was standing in wrong place? 😀

Good to see Wojcech smile it off

  67. Norfolk Gooner's avatar Norfolk Gooner says:

    Flamini off, injured, Ramsey on.

  68. Super stop Szczesny

  69. The media never fails to amuse me…….the BBC headline for the Dippers game….

“Liverpool Held by 10 men Newcastle”

And then first line of report…

“Liverpool twice came back from a goal down as they had to settle for a point against 10-man Newcastle”

So surely the headline should be “10 men Newcastle fail to hold on”, or “Liverpool fight back to get point at 10 Men Newcastle”

  70. Gibbs has been excellent this half

  71. Time to release the handbrake Arsenal

  72. ärnie's avatar ärnie says:

well done, first half, entire team fantastic

Gibbs and Sagna great on the flanks.

The quartet – Santi, Ozil, Wilshere and Giroud great in the middle

BFG, Kos and Szcz fantastic at the back

Arteta and Flamster great in interception when Arsenal lost possession. Flamster injured, replacement Ramsey, have to see how this goes

    Gorgeous goal 😀

  76. ärnie's avatar ärnie says:

    From the Beebs:

A quick trawl through the Fifa rulebook seems to suggest that Chelsea’s goal should not have been allowed.

    Law 12 suggests:

‘When a goalkeeper has gained possession of the ball with his hands, he cannot be challenged by an opponent.

‘A goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball while the ball is between his hands and any surface (e.g. ground) and while in the act of boucning it on the ground.’

  77. Norfolk Gooner's avatar Norfolk Gooner says:

Thanks Arnie, I believe he’s sent off five players in four matches this season.

  78. sai's avatar sai says:

Giroud is such a strong, strong player. Just missing his shooting luck recently. Hoping to see the first 30 minute magic back again.

  79. sai's avatar sai says:

Team’s energy seems to have faded after the goal. Boys seem to ave taken it a bit too easy!

  80. Sai if he keeps contributing flick assists like for the first i am not too bothered about goals…..although we are looking a bit disjointed, 2-0 up sit back….not 1-0

  81. I’d rather we dominate possession at 1-0 up rather than trying to play on the counter which seems to be the mentality. Still not quite enough pace to play with a a full tilt counter attack.

  82. ärnie's avatar ärnie says:

    GiE: agree 100%

  83. Ok now we can sit back 😀

Özil can head the ball too 😀

  84. Sai's avatar Sai says:

Wow! What a great cross from Giroud! Brilliant header from Ozil. 2-0 to Ozil and two clear we go on top!

  85. Santi off Rosicky on….these pundits who suggest we haven’t got a big squad? Do they know Walcott, Pod and Ox are still injured?

  86. ärnie's avatar ärnie says:

    Ozil, 2-0

  87. ärnie's avatar ärnie says:

    another great goal

  88. Sai's avatar Sai says:

2 assists for GIroud. Now, Rosicky could bring some more energy into the game.

  89. ärnie's avatar ärnie says:

    another great assist, Giroud

  90. Sai's avatar Sai says:

Agreed GIE @ 4:15. Giroud consistently keeps contributing something every game.

That was a lazy kick from BFG. Easy goal given away!

  95. Someone in midfield has switched off there!

  96. ärnie's avatar ärnie says:

  97. ärnie's avatar ärnie says:

  134. ärnie's avatar ärnie says:

Two new things we learnt about the team today. And both were fantastic.

    1. Santi and Ozil will be a great combination. yes, Santi was a bit rusty, understandably, but still their coordination was fantastic.

    2. We all know Giroud as a goal scorer, but his two assists, and particularly the first one, were simply outstanding. And they created the first two goals, which is even more significant. After that, it was just time to toy with the opposition.

And if I may add a third, Bendy was really good.

This team is looking fantastic now…..

  135. Anthony Taylor gives a shocking decision for Chavs against Hull by all accounts…….hmmmm more noise when its against the little’uns isn’t it!

    Great pre-match BR (natch)

As Gn5 said, it wasn’t on telly here in Canadia so I had to go to the pub (Scallywags, Gn5) where they had a stream. The stream went down at half time because of a major problem with TSN (the network showing it).

We missed our second goal and Norwich’s goal, then someone got a stream going on their smart phone and the last 20 minutes involved the amusing spectacle of 20 Gooners crammed round one bloke’s phone. But at least we saw our wonderful 3rd and excellent 4th.

This team has SO much potential.

Just need a Hammers equaliser to round off a great day.

But, I know its early, can anyone suggest something interesting for the Palace game? I will be in London on Friday, and could watch the game somewhere (either go to the ground, or otherwise a pub or somewhere else). Plan to take a late evening flight on Saturday.

Hi Oh Mighty scribe, aka Rockadillo. 🙂

    Yes, ’tis I.

My iPhone is far too clever for me now that I have the ios7 software, and it keeps clearing history, including names. I cannot be assed to find out how to adjust it at the mo’, so I have to keep typing out my avatar name.

An abbreviation seemed the easiest solution.

26, can we agree a favourable exchange rate – well to me, naturally — how about £1 = $0.5? Seems about right.

Evonne, did you mean Ravel Morrison?

  160. RockyLives's avatar RockyLives says:

Have finally got round to seeing our second (very nice goal) and Norwich’s… the BFG sliced his clearance but I also thought Gibbs could have done better to try and block the shot or get a challenge in on the Norwich player.

Still, I shouldn’t carp after some of the great football today.

  161. Evönne's avatar Evönne says:

I’m not sure 26m, but I overheard pundits talking about him as if he was the next Messiah. Is Morrison 19 and with some discipline problems?

I have tried all different kind of settings in privacy in Safari and well everywhere….it’s all a bit poo.

  169. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gööner In Exile says:

Regarding Norwich’s goal definitely think midfield is more responsible than defence.

BFG takes his normal position doesn’t get the happiest of strikes on the clearance.

Gibbs has his man marked back to goal so is getting ready to shepherd him away.

Howson arrives from deep with no tracking runner. Which means Gibbs has to change what he is doing but if he over commits he allows his man to be easily played in.

Need to watch again with a wide angle to see where everyone is but my guess is Ozil, Jack, Rambo or Rosicky should have gone with Howson.

  170. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gööner In Exile says:

In other news 6-0-6 featured largely on United and Anthony Taylor tonight, apparently keeper is bouncing the ball in his area Eto’o nicks it and plays Hazard in to score.

I’m going to need to look at the law because I knew the keeper cannot be tackled while in process of clearing the ball from his hands (throwing or drop kick ) but just standing there bouncing the ball I’m not sure…especially if bouncing with one hand.

  171. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gööner In Exile says:

Just watched it personally think that’s fair game.

  172. Altho law 12 as quoted by Arnie above seems to suggest otherwise. Altho Arnie’s quote specifies between his hands plural……the keeper bounces it with one hand

  173. I stand corrected:

And its as a result of the 6 second law…..which never gets applied!

A goalkeeper is not permitted to keep control of the ball in his hands for more than six seconds. A goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball:

    * while the ball is between his hands and any surface (e.g. ground, own body)

    * while holding the ball in his outstretched open hand

    * while in the act of boucning it on the ground or tossing it in the air

When a goal keeper has gained possession of the ball with his hands, he cannot be challenged by an opponent.

So if this rule was applied years ago, this goal would never have happened:

  174. Shard's avatar Shard says:

Great result today and what beautiful goals! Loved it, despite the fact that we were only superb in parts. Hope Flamini’s ok. Looking forward with great anticipation to the Dortmund game.

Man U drawing made it even better. I really hope they finish out of the top 4.

Chelsea’s goal should not have stood. If the ball is considered to be not in the keeper’s control there, then every time a keeper bounces the ball, a free kick should be awarded to the opposition because he can’t reclaim the ball with his hands once he lets go. The law is pretty clear anyway. No goal. Wrong decision.

  175. Amazing the difference in commentary Chas….the commentator believed we should have been awarded the goal…..wouldn’t get that today!

The difference between those ones is that the keeper was in the act of clearing the ball, so was always a foul, the keeper could never be impeded/tackled while taking the drop kick….Best made about three offences everytime he moved when Banks changed direction.

  176. Shard actually made me laugha couple of Chavs rang 6-0-6 to tear strips out of Taylor saying he gave everything for Cardiff, lots of decisions incorrect……..i don’t think it will be long before he is relegated.

    Thanks for the post Raddy

What a splendid day. Like Redders, i was so happy with the goals we scored that when i got home i immediatly went into a Zorba like dance. Unfortunately Mrs Terry met me at the door and told me the bad news that her aunt had fallen down the stairs and broken her leg, but i was so happy i could not stop the dance. I did instantly say “Thats terrible” but i was half way through doing a siscors kick and twirl.

Now Mrs Terry is not talking or acknowleding me so the day just gets better and better

I would like to discuss “vindication”

Not only is Arsene now been vindicated with the faith he put into his young players and his general football philosophy he will soon be vindicated in a massive way that will exceed all our expectations.

Arsene Wenger is not just the right man to lead us forward, he is the only man to lead us forward.

Before he retires he will drive us to more Titles, and if there is any justice, the Champions League to

The Ghosts of the Thirties are Stirring

  178. Wifes not talking and Terry’s stirring goats again…all is well with the world 😀

Although for what its worth totally agree.

Anyone think DB10 and Pires’s presence in London could see them end up with positions in the Academy? Kind of thinking Brady’s vacated post may be perfect for God.

    Nite all.

  188. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gööner In Exile says:

After I found that Dibble clip earlier I found a couple of David Seaman compilations, I forgot how good he was. Puts any Arsenal keeper or England keeper since to shame.

But I would love to have him back at Arsenal coaching, the one thing I loved about him was his composure and calmness after making save. So rarely did he bollock anyone for making a save. He just did his job. Notice some of that has been in Szczesny’s game of late. Maybe Bouldie is having words.

  189. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

I’m sure it’s academic, Chelsea would have won today (Cardiff look really poor), but Eto’o clearly fouled the keeper before the first goal. It’s pretty shocking that neither referee nor linesman spotted it.

  190. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gööner In Exile says:

  191. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gööner In Exile says:

26 but not that shocking given the referee now is it? Remember he was not at fault in our game with Villa at all….because little team won.

Mourinho apparently sent to the stands for moaning about time wasting…….Mourinho moaning about gamesmanship …….. ROLF

  192. arnie's avatar arnie says:

GiE: good one, Hansen – scum no 1.

26: on the result of the chavs game, dont quite agree, if the equaliser would not have come through a ref mistake, who knows what would have happens.

Most importantly, highlights again the poor quality of refereeing in the EPL

  193. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

Completely agree, the refs in this country are absolutely woeful. I have seriously considered dusting off my own refs’ badge (I really do have one) – even at 44 with a duff knee, I must be better than these muppets.

But come on, Cardiff are pants, Chelsea would’ve won without the cheating goal.

  194. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

How lucky are we, to have a player of Rosicky’s quality in reserve? Christ, he might not even make the bench once everyone’s fit.

  195. arnie's avatar arnie says:

the team looks really fantastic. Rosicky was great (the chip for the second Ozil goal was sublime!). So was everyone else. There was no area on the pitch where we looked deficient today. What a game!!

  196. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gööner In Exile says:

My Cousin in Law (40ish) and his son (19) have been reffing for a few years, the eldest took it up because he wanted to have some authority if he was asked to ref his sons games. Now fully qualified and loves it….he played a lot of football before and has seen it as a way to stay involved, the son was never that good at playing but has enjoyed reffing he mainly does kids but does a few senior matches running the line.

Even though they are a long way down the officiating pyramid it’s always interesting watching games with them….the things they see as a result of the ref courses is interesting.

Last time I saw them they explained how it is frowned upon if they use the wrong hand to hold up a flag when making various signals. I wouldn’t even be able to remember it let alone make the decisions.

  197. RockyLives's avatar RockyLives says:

Thought you might like this little discussion about Ozil and Arsenal from a ManUre blog where they’re tearing their hair out about their lack of creative talent:

exactly…i dont think ive seen united play a really good game this season in the league…
and thats really worrying…after 8 games united is already 8 points behind arsenal(who btw look like nothing will stop them)…

Its amazing how much Ozil made a difference, who we failed to get or didn’t want.

by astrotrain on Oct 19, 2013 | 5:07 PM up reply
    unbelievably good…
was expected …ozil is that good…but its not just him…the entire team looks brilliant…ramsey wilshere and ozil are killing it….flamini has brought back that steel that arsenal required….and now even giroud is creating…but so far ramsey has been scoring for fun…

Yep a genuine World Class performer
Week in week out, always contributes, top,top footballer

Ozil would be completely and utterly wasted in this system.
by LiamP on Oct 19, 2013 | 5:10 PM up reply

If Moyes doesn’t know how to use Kagawa, then he wouldnt know what to do with Ozil.
by astrotrain on Oct 19, 2013 | 5:15 PM up reply

It’s not that, but where would you play him?
4-4-2 and the front 2 are pretty much set. Shunt him out wide like Januzaj? Would be a complete waste.
by LiamP on Oct 19, 2013 | 5:17 PM up reply

The rest of it was actually quite an intelligent discussion about ManUre’s woes. None of the commenters seem to have much faith in Moist pulling things round and the concensus was that he is playing an old-fashioned style of football which leaves ManUre years behind the more progressive European teams.

I wonder how the little boy inside BSR is feeling today? 🙂
