After a tough start to his time as Manchester United manager question marks are being raised about whether Moyes is the right man for the job.
I have seen fellow Gooners take great delight in his early predicament, mutterings to the press, and the speed in which he appears to be losing the dressing room. Following Fergie was always going to be difficult, and right now Moyes looks like a fish out of water.
But here’s the thing, we Arsenal fans need to support Moyes, as should the rest of the fans in the country who don’t support Manchester United.
We have seen in this transfer window what a difference the coach makes. Given a choice of teams to go to none of the best players wanted to go and play for Moyes. Rewind twelve months and imagine Fergie had announced his retirement a season earlier, does anyone seriously think Brave Sir Robin would have chosen to play for Moyes?
When they played Chelsea I laughed as Moyes who had been standing on the touch line for most of the game went up to his seat to talk to his coaches, he quite simply didn’t understand how to get the win, this is not what he is used to, a point against Chelsea or the big boys would be a good result for him in the past.
And this is why we should want Moyes to keep his job as long as possible, at least for two more transfer windows, so that all the old men have retired or asked to leave and he is left struggling to attract the best of the best.
There is another reason we need him to stay, and his name is Pep Guardiola, Pep was recently quoted as saying he wants to manage in England, he has a contract in Munich for three years. Assuming he stays in the job he will be available in summer of 2016. If Moyes gets sacked early United have the chance to get another coach on a three year deal and fight for Pep, if he stays for a season and a half the manager who replaces him will not take a one and a half year deal.
And what does this mean for us? Well as we all know Arsene’s deal ends in the summer, give the man two more years, and then we can have Pep, Arsene’s natural successor.
So here’s the message we need to repeat in public, “Moyes is good for United”, we can laugh about it quietly as they fall apart, but keeping his job is in all of our interest.

Arsenal News 24/7

Suppose ya have to laugh at something laughing at wenger is obviously getting boring! Sir Robin is man utd get over it!
I just hope Ozil doesn’t turned out to be another Peter Marinello to all who remember…….
Excellent GiE, “In Moist we trust” ha ha.
Lovely to see the Old Toilet bum scrapings are getting defensive about their new Gollum lookalike manager.
Interesting post. I am not sure I would like to see pep gardiola replace arsene wenger. I want the manager to stay for a good few years and reap the rewards of his endeavours. As for an eventual replacement, I have a feeling that much like the unheralded signing that turned into superstars, so too an unheralded manager with nevertheless great pedigree would do nicely. I also prefer our style of total football as opposed to the Barcelona Tika Taka I’m falling asleep variety.
But good point about United’s aging squad and the difficulty they will have finding decent replacements. They should struggle in Europe this season. But the refs should keep them competitive in the EPL.
ha ha ha, GiE, great fun!!!!
Yes, Moyes, you have my/ our unequivocal support. But: “Given a choice of teams to go to none of the best players wanted to go and play for Moyes”. So, dear Moyes, you would surely understand that we have to make a make a raid in Janunary. For Rooney, and whatever significant other we can gather?
On Pep for Arsenal, the jury is still out as far as I am concerned. Let him prove himself in Germany first ….. I think this is a tougher challenge than Barca…
pls i wnt 2 play 4 arsenal or manchester united am alexander jamesinho am atakin midfield i cn play frm (8)(10) i can play frm winge(7) pls am jst 17yrs wt a brght future am a gr8t stay bt nobody is dr 2 help me pls eny club am ready 4 the chaleng my facebook name is ugwuanyi sleepmc pls am free egent
I thought Man U should’ve gone for Mourinho or a similar top-of-the-market manager. I understand the logic of replacing one intense Glaswegian with another, and I rate Moyes, but the differences between Ferguson and Moyes are that United were utter cack when Ferguson took over and he would get time to do his job. Moyes has taken over the reigning champions (even with obvious weaknesses) and there will be little patience in what could genuinely be a five- or six-horse race for the title.
He could get things moving. Fellaini is a good signing, even if he’s not exactly what they need (that would be Ozil or Fabregas). I imagine the January TW will see some significant action in Salford. But I would say success for Moyes is in the balance.
As for Guardiola, yes, he’s someone I would love to think would be in the mix for taking over from Wenger in due course. But Michael Laudrup or Jurgen Klopp would also be welcome names to be considering. Even Roberto Martinez, though I understand why soe may feel his credentials may not quite be right.
GiE – Moyes looks like a fish out of water. He looked like that even before he joined ManU.
Good article, Moyes is a much better manager than Pep and he will do well at Old Trafford. Absolutely.
I hope Ozil will continue where he stoped when he was #Madrid,as a new recruited Arsenal player, surely he can fill the holes that hindered Arsenal from lifting trophies for over a decade,we Man Utd fans like to surpport him.
I love Moysie. He da best.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrjzkrqA9_Y
Moyes is the man we needed #OT ‘Sir Fergie’ knew what Moyes can do that’s why he brought him into the best club, nevertheless the transfer failure, hopefuly with the new lad we got Maroane Fellaini everything look ok. Nobody should criticise our Boss Moyes, faithfuly, he have adapted to be the next “Fergie”
Good stuff Odynaks, I hope everyone else at your club thinks that too.
In Moist we trust.
Reblogged this on deanomartins's Blog.
Y’all retards……..firstly, deal with it. VP is RED! Secondly anytime u still gon be below us thirdy, y’all so deluded, that u can’t judge fairly. Am nt surprised, this ur blog, so expectation of such disgusting and illogical comments are warranted.
Very enjoyable GIE. I agree we should all support Moyes.
No-one has the stones to take over from SAF. Just as we will struggle to replace AW.
Great managers are few and far between, especially managers who completely turn a club around.
SAF & AW have done that and done so without recourse to massive spending (Mancini/Mourinho).
I think MU will regret giving Moyes such a long contract
Good to see MU fans confirm their stupidity 😀
Thank you “can’t kill….etc” – would “Y’all retards” be a one of the “disgusting and illogical comments” you refer to ?
In Moist we trust.
Good stuff Y’all, cheers GiE.
Like 26 i like Moyes but he is nowhere near good enough to replace Sir red nose
At least we’ll have the memories:
Danny, Ozil hasn’t come from hibs to join us. As for manchester fans. Why spend an extra 4million on felliani when you signed after his contract had lapsed to buy at 23.5m rather than 27.5m you paid? Come on, even you lot must admit he’s pretty uninspiring
Morning all, glad you enjoyed 😀
Some of you Reds don’t seem to get it, Brave Sir Robin was dead to us as soon as he released his statement, he ran away just like his namesake, judging by your comments i’d guess you are too young to get the Monty Python reference. I couldn’t care less whether he plays for you or anyone else, but don’t for a minute think he went to play there because the prospect of Gollum being his manager was too great a temptation.
26 I can’t quibble with your list although I think Laudrup has a sterner test this season, as does Martinez.
Where I think the likes of Rodgers, Martinez, Laudrup and even Lambert, Holloway and Mackay differ from Moyes is that they are all trying to win games, Moyes has never really done that against the bigger teams, whereas the new crop of managers are rarely set up with backs against the wall of the bus.
Does anyone think there are many managers with the balls to take over from SAF? TO give credit to Moyes he did, but on the other hand he has admitted that SAF basically told him he had to take it.
If Moyes is a success or failure it will be seen positively on SAF:
Failure – proves what a great manager SAF was
Success – proves SAF was right to appoint him
Evonne top one liner earlier at 10:10am and Sav this “They should struggle in Europe this season. But the refs should keep them competitive in the EPL.” is genius
All agreed, Exile. I’m looking forward to Ferguson’s book being published next month – I’m sure he won’t be able to resist putting the boot into Rooney, for one. I certainly can’t see it helping Moyes in his tricky opening phase.
It’s a cliche, but the influence of a great but now former manager can only be problematic for the new boy.
Are there odds on Man U finishing outside the top four??
Talking of Moyes looking like a fish out of water, hope you lot saw this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-24040130.
Given that AVB confirmed Adebayor could leave the club, would anyone here be happy to see him back with us in January? Even setting aside his history and personality, he’s not what I would have in mind, but on his day (and with a big payday in the offing), he is fantastic on the pitch.
Klopp over Pep any day.
Good post giE. Moyes will have a rough 2 seasons and get lucky if he’ll last on 3rd.
The next 3 seasons are ours!
26…..Arsenal —– Shitty —— Spuds —- Arsenal again?
Not sure I like the idea of that…..when he is sat counting a pile of cash in sure he is not overly bothered but from a football point of view moving away from us when he did was a terrible decision for the lad.
Too many of his good years are behind him unfortunately……or fortunately as he is costing Spudders a lot of money.
Klopp’s stock is certainly rising, but I think he may be a one club man?
GiE – don’t forget the Whore had a spell at Madrid, he must have trousered a few bob in that time too.
In Moist we trust.
Adebayor? Definitely not. The summer allowed us to remove all the players who in a scrap went missing. Why sign another one?
Let him remain at THFC taking up space and money. Trouble is – as you say he has quality and when the Spuds realise they have bought a dud in Soldildo they will have both Defoe and Ade as back-up.
I agree with this post.
However, I’ve read around the place suggestions that man utd are in a ‘downward spiral type thing’. Remember what happened when a certain Portugese manager predicted a similar thing to happen to the mighty Arsenal?
Moyes may well be out of his depth, he may well be unsure of himself at the big boys table but the team he has to work with were the champions last season. I don’t see them winning this season but its wishful thinking that a Man utd Armageddon is on the cards.
They’re a powerhouse as much as ever.
Something strange, Mourinho seems to have been relatively quiet so far. I’m still waiting for the first Mourinho – Wenger clash. There was that Demba Ba incident
Great premise and post. Pep will do fine in munich, we have to become successful and a have status as a big club for him to consider us. But he is still not ahead of klopp in my opinion.
He is first choice.
Replacing a manager of SAF’s pedigree is almost impossible so Moyes appears to be a stopgap option until United can find a really world class manager like Klopp or Pep. Moyes was SAF’s choice and anyone believing that United are finished will be in for a big surprise….even without SAF, they are a class act as I believe City will find out next Sunday. Despite a long-term contract, United could drop Moyes like a hot potatoe IF things go wrong and they have a better option.
We have to be focused on Wenger staying for at least naother 4-5 seasons….which I believe he wants to do as well. Something tells me he may be busy again in the January TW…but only time will tell.
Thanks Gooner In Exile, I think being the club MU are, Moyes will not be allowed to do any long-term damage. And before we start predicting their decline and writing obituaries on them, we should assess what they’ve done so far.
No big-name signing, but they kept Rooney, who we were allegedly going ga-ga over, and they started the season from a stronger position than Arsenal, as champions, and by a comfortable distance, last May.
A 0-0 draw at OT against a Mourinho-inspired Chelsea, a manager with a very respectable head-to-head record against SAF, so no real crisis there, and I seem to remember Dirk Kuyt scoring one of the easiest hat-tricks ever seen as Liverpool trounced MU 3-1 at Anfield, so a 1-0 defeat there hardly constitutes a shock.
Has Mesut Ozil’s signing suddenly closed that gulf between them and us? Only time will tell, but I wouldn’t have thought so.
On the Theo Walcott discussion, I understood exactly what you said, your pre-requisite was that you think Walcott now has the ability to step up and play consistently well and be a major part of our quest for silver-ware. I maintain that his standard is Stoke or West Ham.
26M – Funny how people are criticising Walcott after one duff game – really? Walcott’s Arsenal career is littered with ‘duff’ games, in fact how many games can you look back on and say Walcott was absolutely outstanding?
And there can’t be any redemption for Adebayor after the way he celebrated that goal for MC. He is a mercenary, vastly over-rated like so many others in the modern game.
Are Rocky, RA and DidIt on the bender?
Thank you to those that have come on to make sure nobody is under the illusion that the mancs are headed for the skids.
For a minute there, I thought it was a spoof post. 🙂
The BFG has the sh*ts and Ozil has travelled with a cork.
Off to see these later.
Ozil not playing tomorrow??!!
Did we really buy him, or is the Club making fools out of us again?
GIE, we’re with you on giving AW two more years, into summer of 2016. Klopp, who has been on record as saying he will honor his Dortmund contract, is also up in summer of 2016. He’s the perfect fit with the ways his sides play, and with picking up young talents and shaping them into a cohesive unit. And someone who looks and acts like an axe murderer would definitely get the players’ attention.
Reblogged this on Look Into Football and commented:
Great post about David Moyes’ rough start to life at Manchester.
Rasp. No access to the posts. Can you take out Merts & Ozil from my team and make appropriate adjustments?
Thanks
Gonna be tricky up North without BFG.
I guess Sagna and Koscielny at centre backs which will be a bit concerning as they won’t have BFGs calming presence.
WATA: 43 appearances, 21 goals, 14 assists. Not much to argue with re Theo’s stats.
Precisely 26….Stoke and West Ham would be more than happy to have him 🙂
Oi, Exile, watch it…… 🙂
Theo’s shit but he’s our dangerous shit. 🙂
Dirtbox were superb.
Nicely revved up for our trip to the Stadium of Light.
Forgot to say whilst people were questioning the tika taka of Barca and Pep earlier that the passing wasn’t the best thing about Barca for me, the best thing was the way they pressed to win back possession high up the pitch.
We operate a half soft press maybe because teams in the PL have the ability to break at pace but Barca operated a full hard press, one man went to the ball the others blocked passing angles, they gave opponents no time. To make it work you also all need to know your jobs and the job of others.
Easy in a pub league, GIE.
Barca can do it because they have the ball the rest of the time, boring the tits off everybody.
G’night.
Nice one GIE
I am not a bitter man, and go out of my way to not to dislike others but i do have a diary of those that will be punished when i take over and Moyes is quite high on the list, number 6,453 to be infact.
His face is barley tolerable. i dont have to avert my eyes completely when i observe him but i do have to employ a fan.
As for his personality, well, i was once served a salmon in a posh restaurant that not only looked remarkably like him, it also had greater charisma.
Its a sad indictment on modern society that i have to refuse a fine piece of fish on the grounds that i am reminded of Manchester Uniteds manager
Overall then it seems he does not have a lot going for him, but he did a decent job at Everton so anything is possible
If he does prove succesful at Utd, it will prove what i have always suspected. Fish are very cunning and lead you into a false sense of security.
Near poetic blog from Johnny O’Neill http://jonnyoneill1.wordpress.com/2013/09/12/red-wine-on-your-bed-sheets/
Chas enjoy your trip to Sunderland. Gutted now that I let the tickets sell out, although getting there by train was impractical and driving their on my own too dangerous.
Transplant
“I was once served a salmon”
Top spin, or slice, and was it dead or alive? Such an incomplete statement.
Match Day!!!!!
Morning Exile,
I see Chas is playing away. Does that mean “The Show” is back on the road?
Yikes, just read through comments. Ozil and The Big German both out?
Ey oop, skiver.
Ant’s driving, so no beer drinking at 9 am.
GIE,
I should have given you more encouragement to get a ticket. You could have stopped here and gone up with us. Ant was in the U.S. at the time and I didn’t know what the arrangements might be, what with the gig last night as well.
You might not miss Özil’s debut anyway, by the sound of it.
I nearly posted the Jonny blog yesterday.
This made me laugh
Have you ever been this drunk? 😆
Chas
I imagine you know my views on ugly women. Utterly pointless.
To quickly clear my name, I do have an “utterly pointless men” list as well, so please only call me a bit sexist.
What’s with the Ant driving? Surely removes much of the pleasure from the away-day experience.
Oh God, I’m at it again.
Nothing sensibly footbally to say.
at least you have SOMETHING to say, the silence in your absence was deafening. Welcome back DidIt
I have mixed feelings about the game today. We should be running the show comfortably, but they are capable of staging a horror show at home, scary placey to be on a wet, wet, wet Sat afternoon
Is Wenger protecting Ozil? We know what happened to Gervinho during his first game in EPL
Ant drives a lot for his job, so he’s very used to it. He attaches his ipod to the car system and we have every punk record you could ever remember as accompaniment.
After last night he’ll probably be quite happy he doesn’t have to hit the sauce first thing. Just a couple of liveners at the ‘Spoons in Sunderland town centre should suffice.
The away support are housed in the top tier of the North Stand high up under the roof apparently. The last time we went it was an FA cup game and we were low down in the South Stand because the allocation was larger. Nearly 3,000 today, cup games 5 or 6 thousand.
you usually have chicken balti pie over there, don’t you? the thought of it……..
Evonne,
Scary is good, it’s called pre-match nerves.
If you felt nothing you might as well go and support the spuds.
Would you want to be a Barca fan and play in a pub league knowing you’ll win 95% of games very easily? It would be so dull.
I’ve made a packed lunch. It’s Wigan who are the pie-eaters.
Speaking of which, where is Wiggy?
I can’t remember what happened in the Klingon’s first game in the EPL, please remind me.
Morning everyone…..I drive alot too but the journey on my own (especially coming back) would have been a bit of a bind with no company.
And as it turns out I am now on in laws IT support duty…..don’t you hate it when you’re the only one in the family who can fix computers!
perhaps it wasn’t Gervinho’s first game when Joe Barton happened to him
GiE – there is a trick I have. I mess up their machines a bit and they never ask me again 🙂 Just the screen savers, default browsers, fonts, nothing too serious
GIE,
Georgie will be able to come with you in a couple of years. 🙂
Morning all, that blog from Johnny O’Neil linked by GiE this morning is one of the finest passages of football writing I’ve ever read – does anyone know his background?
No, Rasp.
Here’s his page.
Take a look at the photos and videos section.
Thanks chas 🙂
Raddy, if you’re about, the BFG is ill and hasn’t traveled – do you want to revise your team for today’s prematch?
Rasp Raddy has commented last night about the team selection
Thanks GiE, my understanding is that Ozil has travelled and may play some part. Do you know if Vermaelen has travelled?
This is how I think we’ll strat … does everyone agree?
SZ
Jenks – Sagna – Koz – Gibbs
Ramsey – Flamini – Wilshere
Theo – Giroud – Cazorla
Apologies Raddy, but due to a change in the available personnel I’m going to have to slightly reword parts of your PM
….. New post …….
