Blame where blame is due

We all know the phrase “credit where credit is due”, but perhaps the time has come to take a look at Magic Hat’s theory “blame where blame is due”.

Everything started when two friends became enemies. Not an unusual story, I hear you saying and you are naturally right, but the rift between these two has helped to bring about a disastrous course of events.

I am of course speaking about David Dein and Danny Fiszman. Dein was forced out, Fiszman died and we are where we are.

How can a man who truly loves Arsenal side with Usmanov, who supposedly doesn’t give a hoot about Arsenal?

How can his son “put the boot in” with the footballers he represents and encourage them to leave?

Is it a case of getting sweet revenge?

Why was SK welcomed with open arms? He knows nothing about our team either, but it was a good way of keeping a true Gooner out, once and for all.

Does AW really care about anything other than realising his vision and proving everyone else wrong? As long as we reach the CL, the board is happy, Wenger gets to carry on with his plan and we sit here with “egg on our faces”, unable to do anything.

So, when it comes to apportioning the blame, the only innocents are you and me – the true Arsenal fans.

    Interesting Jeanette.

Not sure I blame anyone because I am proud of how our club bass ridden a financial crisis and come out with a new stadium, money to buy players and a strong squad underpinned by good young prospects (Ox, Eisfeld, Gnabry, Myachi etc).

I agree that the conflict between Dein and the Old School Arsenal board was costly. Though the 70m+ that Dein pocketed and the huge wad received by Lady Nina must be a decent recompense!

Welcome to the ranks of AA authors 🙂

I think the “full inside story” of the boardroom shenanigans has yet to be written. Hopefully one of the main parties will reveal all at some point.

However, I agree with BR regarding Arsene’s role in all this: he has done an extraordinary job of keeping us even remotely competitive during very difficult financial years.

Keep the faith, because I feel we are now about to reap the benefits of all that hard and difficult work.

Either you support or don’t. Simple really.
Btw you’re negative comments don’t speak for me.

  5. Jeanette. They ain’t like you & me Regretfully, the name of the game isn’t Arsenal……it’s money !

  6. kelsey's avatar kelsey says:

I think some of us old uns find it hard sometimes to see how football has evolved and as Martin says it’s all about money or in most cases lack of it.
There is no question in my mind that fan and club are distancing themselves as the years roll on. We used to have idols regardless how the team were doing, a player used to get a testimonial, but money has changed all that.

I know I can’t live in the past but it often just doesn’t sit well with me.

  7. GunnerN5's avatar GunnerN5 says:

I can only assume that SS is SK, who appears to be a steady influence in the Arsenal boardroom.

For all the good things DD achieved in his time at Arsenal he screwed up really badly by going to bed with a Russian with very questionable credentials, and realizing too late that he had chosen a dead end path back into the Arsenal fold. Yes, DD, may be a great supporter but he, like his son, is only concerned with his personal gain.

Fortunately the vast majority of Arsenal supporters do not share in your negative opinion of Arsene Wenger.

Our AA shows that 85.2% of those who responded to our poll voted for Arsene. In point of fact he got nearly 6 times as many votes as the combined total of all of the other managers put together..

I find that claiming we supporters have egg on our faces is nothing more than a big yoke!

Jeanette, I’m not sure I get the point of your post. Just what are we finding someone to blame for?

Is it to blame them for creating a modern, (almost) self supporting football club that plays it’s home games in a (mostly) full sate of the art 60,000 capacity stadium?

Is it to blame them for serving up the most entertaining, technically brilliant football that I can remember seeing in over 60 years of watching Arsenal?

Is it to blame them for not serving up the instant gratification demanded by today’s generation of spoilt supporters?

I seem to recall that Kroenke was not welcomed with open arms, rather the Chairman publicly questioned “whether we need his sort here”.

How can we be expected to disaprove of a properly registered agent doing the job he is paid for by looking after the best interests of his clients. Don’t forget that this same agent brought the players concerned to Arsenal in the first place.

Do you really think that Wenger cares only about “realising his vision and proving everyone else wrong”?

Now the irony here is that initially Dein brought in Kroenke by selling a fair few shares to him in the first place.

For reasons best known to Dein he then sold the rest to Usmanov’s Red and White Holdings. Stan in the meantime grew friendly with the board and the rest is history.

Dein is so often held up as some saviour of Arsenal but lets not forget he wanted us to sever all ties with N5 and move us to Wembley, for the fans or for money? It’s not hard to see which really.

Dein’s objective was always about making money, the Board led by Fiszman wanted to do the same but not at the same cost to the history of the club, moving from Highbury was enough of a wrench without moving us to Wembley too.

The effects on the community in N5 would have been massive, business lost, local fans who I often hear being priced out etc would have been forced to pay extortionate prices in another borough.

Is the question one of who is more an Arsenal man Fiszman or Dein…..I think the answer lies in the above.

  24. Jeanette Kliger's avatar Jeanette Kliger says:

I would just like to explain that I wrote this a couple of months ago and that I was definitely not blaming AW, just trying to play agent provocateur.

  25. Moving to Wembley would have been a footballing disaster and probably the end of Arsenal as a major club. Thank goodness we’ll never know for certain.

  26. Thank you Jeanette for stepping in with the post.
Interesting set of questions and I have one more to add – blame for what exactly? Has there been some wrongdoing that I missed?

And the innocent fans, hm…..I am not blameless. Instead of going to games and supporting the team that I love, I watch games on a cheap stream or a foreign TV. And I bet you I am not the only one that loves taking how much I love the Club, but not enough to go to games.

Who should take the blame? Maybe “fans” like you should for not really supporting the team. Ever semi-educated fan sees what a fantasic work has been done and what is not crying for trophies because one could understand the project and what it means. But instead you want the Arsenal to be a Sugar Daddy Club. Nice. Okay. When Usmanov takes over, are you still a fan if we are playing League One? I don’t think so!

    Thanks for the post Jeanette

Were i agree with you is that divison at the top can lead to unwanted outcomes. For Arsenal, dis harmony is anathema. We are a club which prides itself on unity.

Yes, the former Directors saw a cash cow. Arsenal made the move and the selling of ones shares at such high vaules became impossible for these people to refuse.

I am relaxed about it and blame no one. People want to make money, its always been that way, but what comforts me is that despite the board room wrangles the whole thing is about to be vindicated

Arsenal are a club that is asset rich, cash rich, and just as importantly, still rich in its vaules.

In the next few years we will rise to the top again, and with good leadership userp our rivals and become the best side in England and Europe . We should celebrate this. There is every chance that our policies could create a side to rival the thirties era.

Only one thing concerns me. The legacy of the last ten years means we have a minority shareholder who is frozen out. I speak of the “Fat Man in the Room”. Nothing against the fat man personaly, but as anyone who has shared a room with a fat man knows, you have to sleep with one eye open in case he decides to sit on you.

But apart from that, i am very happy. hahaha

Lets face it Jeanette, every true Gooner at one time or another has questioned what AW and the BOD are doing and why Dein and Fitzman did what they did….but it seems all has turned out more or less well:

    1) The egg that missed our faces is all over the Man Shitty and Chelsea management and team’ s collective kissers…what a joke they are….invested 4 times what we have and both still had a similar season to us and horrible attitudes.

    2) Football is never a blame game, it is all about doing better next time…that is why they play home and away and 38 games.

    3) Usmanov is definitely NOT a true Gooner…his favourite sport is NOT Football and if you’re a nice girl I’ll tell you what it is…..here’s a hint: He is the president of their Musketeer Federation….get the point?

    4) I am definitely NOT innocent with respect to anything, I don’t know about you but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt for now…

Anyway, thanks for the post and keep it up….

Nice things to say about Wayne……the most naturally gifted English footballer of his generation.

I have read people questioning his teamwork I find that incredulous as I think he has often sacrificed his own glory for the sake of the team. I think given the freedom to roam across a front three and unshackled from tracking back duties he could be exceptional. When I see people write him off as a spent force you come to realise these were the same people criticising the club for buying cheap and you have to scratch your head and wonder.

Obviously this all speculation as I don’t really think he will come, but you really begin to question elements of the Arsenal support when they can’t be happy at the prospect of signing a big name for big money, but would be equally disappointed by the arrival of more teenagers.
