What do you think needs to change at Arsenal?

I understand that some on here are keeping their innermost, darkest thoughts to themselves, rightly so in my book, feeling that now is not the time. We have an almighty battle to win, and there can be no distractions.

However, The Arsenal is a business, and things need to be planned ahead. I would be very interested in seeing the outcome of a secret ballot where voters can hide in the shadows of anonymity.

We all know things on and off the pitch could be improved, after all we are not quite “The greatest team the world has ever seen”. Nearly, but not quite.

My view is that tweaks ought to be made in many areas, but what I’m interested to see is how people line up in the broadest of broad stroke change.

*Option 5, ‘All of the above’ refers to changing the ownership, manager and playing staff

Answer 6. is an opportunity for those who shout the loudest to come clean and could be expanded to say: I want the team I support to lose every game to force change, and I honestly couldn’t care less who owns the club, if in the short term it means we spend more money than anyone else. So long as we trophy-up, it’s irrelevant what they do with the history, standards and community of what Arsenal stands for.

I know this is very simplistic, and in almost every case there will be a fusion of ideas in most heads as to the way forward, you can tick more than one box, but try to restrict yourself to choosing the option that is closest to the way you feel.

No argument, Arsenal can no longer compete with big Clubs. The team now has downgraded itself to the level 5 to 8.
I think changes are needed. Give Wenger a rest, and bring in aggressive manager. I will remember Wenger fo making Arsenal invincible and vincible

Arsenal need to chop off Ivan the super director. How is his performance measured?

It seems like the manager is in charge of everything, from football tactics to negotiating, to deciding what colour paint goes on the corridor room walls. I’m sure this never was the case when Arsene Wenger arrived at Arsenal. The fact is Arsenal (the Directors) have shaped this. Whether wenger asked for it or not, it is for the directors to make sure the manager is managing the team as best as possible.

Mr Koneke – you need to step in, and make some decisions, if you are not. You need a new director of football, who actually can convince people to come to the club. (David dein -perhaps)

You need a better wage structure – player who are doing well should be paid for it, and the rubbish should be be paid a lot less.

The players spirit, honour and courage has gone – they do not want to fight for their club – those players should f**k OFF. I see it every week.

Mr Hill Wood – i think you should retire……..

Arsenal are a great business, but have lost their football spirit and desire…..

    WAKE UP ARSENAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Good morning to you all,

I’ve voted, It’s a secret ballot so I’m not revealing how.

The manager needs to change not be changed, our play has become entirely predictable, there needs to be at least a plan B.

If something is manifestly not working on the pitch it needs to be changed immediately, not delayed until the, seemingly, mandatory sixtieth minute before a player is substituted.

Watching that match on Tuesday, it was striking how quickly Mourinho reacted to the Nani dismissal, he immediately brought on Modric with instructions to make use of the space thus created, that stroke of genius was the true turning point in the game.

Maybe it’s a problem with the lack of true class in our squad but so often our substitutes are made on a like for like basis, there is rarely any attempt to “change the game” rather than change the personnel.

  7. Evry corner in emirate need changing, most especially Boards need overhauling.if someone could buy arsenal shares away from this stingy man stan which is number 170 in the world can we compare with Usmanov 34th in the world.after that Gazidis must leave and bring back Dein.Wenger also should take his leave,so we can go with Laudrup Micheal.

  11. GoonerB's avatar GoonerB says:

Micky you little devil. You just know this one will stir up a hornets nest, but great post anyway.

I would say I am a pro Wenger and still remain so, but not without question. There are areas that concern me about our managers mind-set as I perceive it. Norfolk gooner summed it up perfectly for me in his 10.55 and the line about the manager changing and not changing the manager hit the poignant point for me. The problem is Norfolk although I would want to see a subtle change in our manager being more pragmatic I can’t see it happening. He has been under more pressure this year than any other and still states that he does not pay any special attention to one opposition player (Bale), and is only concerned with his team playing to their full potential. If there is no reconsideration on the use of tactics and changes of system at this stage, with the fan and media pressure this year, then it would indicate that it will never be an area that he will look at differently.

It is only my opinion but I have for a while thought that Arsenes great strength is in creating a sublime team that plays a brand of football that can win things in style. That means his strength is in the day to day coaching of players individually, and how they gel together, over a period of time, so that once it comes to matchday it all happens seamlessly, and you can then have the situation where you only need to focus on your own teams strengths in your preferred system and not worry about what the opposition are doing. Some of the statements AW make seem to indicate that this is his thought process.

For this to be effective across a season, IMO, you need to have high quality players in all positions if you want to be able to just put out your best 11 and not take any consideration of the oppositions strengths and weaknesses. If you are not strong in all positions, which I feel we currently are not, then is this way of thinking still the best way. AW obviously thinks so and it could be argued that it is an admirable strength that he sticks to his beliefs on this. It seems to make AW somewhat unique for me in world football as I feel there are very few top level managers that don’t adapt and tweak and pay attention to the opposition danger players, and I am not so sure that this is a strength for me and would consider that this is one of our managers big blind spots. If we had the team of 2003 / 2004 then it is maybe ok but we don’t.

I still think that AW can deliver for us again but based on my above feelings I think it will only be with the right top quality additions so that we can have that strength in all departments to just “play our own game”. Failure to get the right players in the summer will for me leave us found wanting again next year and I think the consequences of not at least challenging at the top end again next year would not be good for AW. That is why I voted for an upgrade in playing staff because I think it is only with this that AW will see his vision materialise.

  13. Simon's avatar Simon says:

I don’t think it’s fair to say the board needs changing or that we need a new manager when none of us are privileged to know the exact goings on at Arsenal. Can anyone say, with confidence and proof, whether the board have made money available and Arsene chooses not to spend it or the board are withholding funds that could be used on playing staff?

Haven’t voted yet, but I think the manager and the board needs to change, not be changed. If there is money available then spend It on players that can improve the squad. If we don’t have the money then where is it going? We have made a profit every year for a while now and we have the highest priced tickets in the world.

As for anyone who votes for the last option, they’re not a fan of Arsenal. No fan would want they’re club to lose just cos the club is going through a relatively bad patch.

All those saying that Arsene needs to change as opposed to Arsenal needing a change in manager are on their way to realising his time is up. What indication have we seen that signals that he can change. People have been saying he needs to change for years and he hasn’t and he won’t.

  30. Red Arse's avatar Red Arse says:

    Micky,

You are conducting a poll that has a contemporary feel to it, given recent rustlings in the undergrowth, and the results will be interesting, just to get a flavour of what fans see as important..

My problem is that the choices are a bit like saying, “choose which of the following makes a nice cup of tea — milk, sugar, water?”, which would miss two key requirements, i.e. hot water, and, of course, some tea bags. [I mean no offence] 🙂

The reason I say that, is that like all businesses, and you have correctly identified Arsenal as a business, albeit of a specific sporting nature, combining social and community interests, it is not possible to press one or even three buttons to say what needs changing, without first quantifying what the purpose of any such change is for, and what it is intended to achieve.

I suspect we are homing in on team performance, as although some fans may have an aesthetic dislike for ‘oilygarch’ ownership, the majority have only a passing interest, in as much as it affects player recruitment.

To condense a ‘tick list’ for improving a business, (or the team) you could look at the following, and arrive at a more comprehensive solution to improving Arsenal, which is really what you are asking us to do from a fans perspective.

    A) Understand the challenges/problems:

    — What do you the fans want the team to achieve?
    — What key areas are preventing this achievement?
    — What are the key factors in realising this improvement?

    B) Identify the key requirements:

    — Funding; player quality; coaching; management; timeline.

    C) Collecting key data:

    — Financial information. Sponsorship, revenue, costs.
    — Scouting, within the UK, Europe, Worldwide.
    — Youth development. Lag and lead times to produce success.
    — Fan satisfaction criteria.

    D) Comparison with the competition:

    — How does the club compare with key competitor baselines?
    — How does the club compare with other sports clubs?

    E) Establish measurable success criteria:

    — Establish a formal fans forum to discuss the criteria.
    — Ownership return on capital investment.
    — Local community interests.

    F) Analyse the data captured:

    — Are there gaps between fans expectations and achievable objectives?
    — What room for improvement does this show?
    — Are the club’s owners content with their commitment?
    — Do the costs of salaries exceed those of our competitors?
    — Is this justified by superior achievement?

    G) Finding the solution

    — Change owners?
    — Change manager?
    — Improve quality of players?
    — Improve costs to release more funding?
    — Improve commercial and sponsorship revenue?
    — Agree with fans and owner, achievable and realistic objectives?
    — Employ independent assessors to examine the club’s processes and management techniques?
    — Obtain fans understanding and agreement to what is achievable?

    H) Implementation of improved processes:

    — Set clear and realistic targets.
    — Consider the effect of changes.
    — Establish an agreed time frame for achieving goals.
    — Put the plan in writing.
    — Communicate the plan to club staff and fans.

This is a ‘write as you think’ explanation, and is not comprehensive!

This is a bit heavy, I know, but it explains why I cannot answer a ‘how long is a piece of string’ type question, because without information, how can one understand what changes are needed at Arsenal?

    [I also know, I am a boring bastard!!] 😛

I don’t think Bould is doing a good job and I would like to see Wenger adopt a different approach to his timing of subs, not play too many players out of position and buy that mentor for our keeper which he was going to do two seasons ago (Schwarzer) perhaps have somone slightly younger but experienced to cover for Arteta and buy a striker.Bendtner could get his contract torn up after his misdemeanors and he just has to go.Santos not sure if he has been written and not sure the exact position with Denilson.
I believe there will be money available but if we really do collapse in the remaining 10 games your guess is as good as mine as to what will happen. No CL; money, a reduced amount on the upfront new shirt deal.
If it was feasable and they have just recorded a huge loss i would buy Suarez even with his antics.

On the occasions when you do not have a post why not put up a “topic of the day”, the possibilities are endless and all it would need is a few lines to set the tone.

For instance today’s topic could be yesterdays Europa League games and thoughts about Bale’s diving technique.

  60. GunnerN5's avatar GunnerN5 says:

To expand on the topic idea it could look like this —

    Europa League Games

    – Did Bale dive?
    – Are Spurs that good?
    – Are Chelsea that poor?
    – Is the Europa League worthwhile?
    – Will Arsenal participate next season?

But what about dead penguins? Eh?

Did you ever wonder why, when they show those nature programmes, that there are no dead penguins on the ice in Antarctica – where do they go?

    Well, wonder no more ! ! !

It is a known fact that the penguin is a very ritualistic bird which lives an extremely ordered and complex life. The penguin is very committed to its family and will mate for life, as well as maintain a form of compassionate contact with its offspring throughout its life.

If a penguin is found dead on the ice surface, other members of the family and social circle have been known to dig holes in the ice, using their vestigial wings and beaks, until the hole is deep enough for the dead bird to be rolled into, and buried.

The male penguins then gather in a circle around the fresh grave and sing:
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .

    “Freeze a jolly good fellow.”
    “Freeze a jolly good fellow.”

Then, they kick him in the ice hole. 😀

    Now that’s worth discussing!!

Great topic’s RA – it seems like a natural to me – but everybody else seems to be in hibernation.

I made reference, some time ago, about the fact that we had all started to chew old bones, and that inevitably happens at this time of year, because the subject matter has become rather hackneyed.

Perhaps we should try and introduce another element to the Posts which moves away a little from purely Arsenal, when we hit the doldrums.

The risk in that is perhaps Arsenal bloggers would not be interested in the machinations of UEFA or FIFA and their coterie of political appointees, or the rules they arrive at fir their own convenience.

So, perhaps we have someone who has a grasp on how our loanees are doing and whether they are ever likely to return to Arsenal, or is the loan system the first step in bidding the club a not so fond farewell?

Better yet, we could all come on to the site and make suggestions about what we should do on a bleak winter day? Ooops, I suspect I am doing that rather poorly and putting more of our community off! 😀

It seems to be pretty quiet all over blogdom, so you have at least lured me into breaking cover, GN5, but I am going to leave you to it for a while.

Before I go, I will leave you with the below, and if that does not get the ladies out on to the blog to beat me up – nothing will!! 🙂

    –“During a lady’s medical examination, the doctor said;

“Your heart, lungs, pulse and blood pressure are all fine.
Now let me see the bit that gets you ladies into all kinds of trouble.”

The lady concerned started taking off her clothes but was interrupted by the doctor.
“No! No! Don’t remove your clothes… Just stick out your tongue!
    .
    .

Could include me too — not the clothes — the tongue!! 😀

There simply has to be an alternative to relying on posts to kick off the day. It must drive Peaches round the bend worrying where the next one will come from? She leads a busy enough life so to be hassle free would seem like a good solution.

Personally I have no objection to having topic’s/post’s that are not specifically related to Arsenal – but you and I are just posters and not decision makers. All we can do is give our opinions – useful or not – heeded or not!

  69. Afternoon all, my suggestion would be revisiting old posts that are still relevant to today.

A few of my old ones were right corkers, he said modestly. 🙂

    Chary;

Thank goodness – another person appears out of the wilderness.

My point is that it does not take a lengthy post to stimulate conversation all it takes is a relevant/current topic.

Red Arse/GunnerN5……I tell everybody I meet now, that I am coming back as a Woman the next time around. I want an easier life.

  72. True N5, there’s always something happening that affects Arsenal either directly or indirectly and just putting up the summary of the news story plus a few lines for possible trains of thought.could start up a decent discussion.

We don’t play till Wednesday next week so there’ll potentially be some dead time.

I do feel there may be a need for slightly less relevant(to Arsenal) subject matter as Redders has suggested.

  73. GunnerN5's avatar GunnerN5 says:

    VCC:

That’s a subject/idea that would most certainly cause a very lively debate.

  74. Very political comment there VCC, if I was to be contentious I would say “In what part of the world would you like to come back as a woman ?”

I’d venture you wouldn’t say the middle east.

As a contrast, a comment from Norwich player Snodgrass today “.. we just have to put the ball in the back of the net”

    You don’t say ?!

  75. VCC's avatar VCC says:

    GunnerN5……: 🙂

Wait till Peaches and Evonne read it 😉

Chary……I’ve been confronted by many irate, vociferous females on my travels this morning, after making such remarks.

I’m lucky to arrive home in one piece. 🙂

  80. Ha Ha, I think you are lucky, VCC.

A skinny little white guy goes into an elevator, looks up and sees this HUGE black guy standing next to him. The big guy sees the little guy staring at him, looks down and says: “7 feet tall, 350 pounds, 20 inch private, 3 pound left testicle, 3 pound right testicle, Turner Brown”.

The white man faints and falls to the floor. The big guy kneels down and brings him to, shaking him. The big guy says, “What’s wrong with you?”

In a weak voice the little guy says, “What EXACTLY did you say to me?” The big dude says, “I saw your curious look and figured I’d just give you the answers to the questions everyone always asks me.

I’m 7 feet tall, I weigh 350 pounds, I have a 20 inch private, my left testicle weighs 3 pounds, my right testicle weighs 3 pounds, and my name is Turner Brown.”

The small guy says, “Turner Brown?!…Sweet Jesus, I thought you said, “Turn around “

Oooh. I waver between so many thoughts BUT some things have to change. We need an Owner, Chairman and board members who are in touch with modern and winning football and are openly passionate about Arsenal, we fans and football. We need a clearout of all mediocre players and trainers. We must have a youngish Director of Football to manage transfers and to manage the Manager. We need defenders with consistent commitment and skill; we need strikers who will deliver at least 20 goals a season. We need a tactition on the training pitches who knows about the modern game. Above all, we need an Arsenal figure who can visibly instil his/her passion for Arsenal winning games into all the players for 90+ minutes of every game. Anyone who cannot provide that, whoever they are, should be sacked.

(even do) God. God came quite. The company name neglect crazymaking for a cause.
There had been no purple flags, think me personally I
looked, as soon as married it starts slow. Like the frog
within the cooking pot. Put a frog in a cooking pot
of warm liquid and he swims around gladly, at a snail’s rate the temperature. is raised until he is boiled to death. Verbal/emotional abuse is actually demoralizing and can paralyze you. It has an effect on, you physically, emotionally, spiritually. GET OUT if you tend to be in a single, and find councel from one who knows the devistation.
You had been wonderfullu and awesomely made by God. Don’t loose whom God made
you to become to a person so really needy and insecure and abusers are.
They want help, however they need to select that.
Live being don’t just exsist in it Prays go out to ones in or hoping to get out of abusive relationship. They tend to be caustic ones not healthy
