Arsenal planning Old Trafford rescue

Last night Manchester United faced Real Madrid in a key game of their season, and the master tactician decided to leave Wayne Rooney on the bench, in his place on the pitch were the ageing Giggs, inexperienced Wellbeck and unreliable Nani.

It appears that Ferguson has forgotten what Rooney is best at, playing football, I haven’t seen many players as gifted with a football as Wayne Rooney was at 19 but it can be argued that he hasn’t progressed, at Old Trafford earlier this season Rooney was given a job to do against us, it wasn’t to be the playmaker or the goal getter, it was to make sure Mikel Arteta had no time on the ball when he had possession, every time he got the ball Rooney was in close proximity snapping to get the ball back.

Is that really what Fergie paid £30m for? A man marking midfielder, what happened?

When you see Rooney play for England with Jack Wilshere you can see he enjoys the game, pass and move, receive again, Rooney becomes once again the player I saw when he first burst on the scene, full of energy, cleverness and skill.

So if we can somehow muster a Champions League place for next season, and if the board are really going to show some ambition and willingness to spend the money, lets make Rooney our first target. I am certain he would love to come and play for Arsene, proper football, enjoy the game once more.

The second target is Ashley Young another typical Fergie purchase, paid £15-20m for him and then uses him extensively, only to spend the next season on the becnch as Fergie has acquired new toys to play with, he has already signed Zaha for 2013-14 so what chances will Ashley Young get next season with the improving Kagawa also looking for increased game time?

Come on Arsenal show some real balls in the transfer market this summer and start a campaign now to acquire two players that could bring a lot to the current squad, and more importantly make people sit up and take notice.

GIE. Love it and an inspired piece of scouting.. As you say – why not?

Rooney showed last season how little he loved MU – playing games just to line his pocket and last night’s benching will do little to improve his attitude

    Trouble is …. I don’t like him.

    Good morning to you all,

GIE I agree about Rooney, but not about Young, mind you I doubt that we would get either as Old Red Nose wont sell them to a rival team, unlike some other clubs I could mention.

What a clever man Jose Mourinho is! After watching his Real Madrid side beat the journalists favourite team he said “the best team lost”, and went on to say “we did not play well”. Fergie’s sycophantic journos lapped it up. Surely what he was actually saying was “we may not have been at our best but we beat United on their own turf and dumped them out of the Champions League” So suck on that Red Nose!

Nani’s red card may or may not have been deserved, in my opinion any red card for a Fergie minion is richly deserved, but the reaction of the United players at the end of the game must surely be investigated by UEFA. Ferdinand’s appalling action, sarcastically clapping the referee right in his face, must warrant a lengthy ban.

Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir showed some balls last night, something many of our home grown arbiters regularly fail to do when officiating at Old Toilet.

    What goes around comes around.

  10. Morning all, and as you all no doubt will have guessed I enjoyed last nights shenanigans at Old Toilet immensely.

Laughed ? My sides haven’t split so much since Drogba’s “this is an effing disgrace” moment.

The most hilarious aspect of this is the ancient purple proboscis’d one’s reaction when the non Howard Webb ref pulled out the red card.

The loathsome caledonian jumped up and bundled over some old fellah sitting next time and barged him out of the way so Fergiescum himself could direct the “hairdryer” at the fourth official.

That disgusting, poor excuse for a human being should get severely reprimanded for his behavior as throwing an empty water bottle is enough to get you sent to the stands to sit amongst opposition team’s supporters.

The “man” behaves like a 71 year old toddler having a tantrum when things don’t go his way and his non appearance at the post match press conference should see his UEFA ban for his conduct during the game increased further, that is if there is any justice.

The sooner “Sir” Fergie retires from the game and is consigned to sitting in a rocking chair under a tartan blanket with adult diapers and a bib to soak up his drooling the better.

As I previously mentioned, I don’t give a stuff about Nani’s red card, one way or the other, altho’ I think he is a little toe rag and deserves it for what he has got away with in the past.

I am, however, delighted with the commotion caused by the actions of the usual ManYoo low lifes, Ferdinand and Evra, and those of their execrable, red schnozzed manager which has been laughably highlighted on TV around the world, and has even been mentioned in a castigatory manner, by the cringe worthy Manure supporting red top journalists.

One other matter that leavened out my enjoyment of the Mancs embarrassing behaviour, was the disgustingly unctuous deference shown to the Manure team and through them ol’ red Nose himself by that louche roué Moaniho and his pitiable ‘the best team lost’ and ‘Sir Alex has won the right to not have his decisions questioned’.

There is a huge element of tongue firmly in cheek, but I really do believe Rooney is a better player than he shows in the PL.

As for Young I would think we could knock the diving out of him, and he would be a very useful wideman, pace, good final delivery and an eye for goal, and from memory a Gooner?

As a player, at some point Rooney would probably do well to move club, and even league, in order to develop. But as a person, I doubt he could cope leaving his Lancashire comfort-zone. He would probably struggle even moving to London, let alone to Spain, Germany, Italy or France.

Which is one of the weaknesses of English players, most of them couldn’t do what all these French, Spanish, African, American, Japanese, Dutch, German, Brazilian, Argentine etc etc players can.

I have solved the mystery of the Rooney absence from the Manure team last night. It began to emerge after last night’s debacle!

Ferguson’s rage with the referee had him slipping in and out of a black, raging fug for several hours, yet Rooney stayed close to him trying to calm Red Nose’s fevered agitation.

After a while, Fergie had calmed down enough to speak, and he motioned for Wayne to come closer.

As the chubby striker sidled nearer, old Red Proboscis said, with his eyes full of tears, ‘You know what? ‘You have been with me all through the bad times. When I lost the EPL to Shitty, you were there with me. When we lost in the CL final, you were there. When I had my heart problems, you were right by my side.

When we lost Ronaldo to Real Madrid you comforted me, when everything goes tits up, you have stayed right here, and now after tonight’s balls up, you came off the bench to help out ………… You know what?’

‘What’s that Boss?’ Wayne blushingly asked, smiling as his heart filled with pride.

‘I think you’re bloody bad luck… Get the f*** away from my club!!

Nice post GIE, and can I also say great post to Rocky for yesterday as I was too tied up to get on.

You raise an interesting point about those 2 players GIE and I wouldn’t say no, but as others have already said he will not sell to us. It is one of the things that annoyed me that he made phone calls and whispered sweet nothings at AW till we sold to him but if we tried to do the same in reverse he would just laugh at us. it is water under the bridge now but we must make sure that it never happens again and the next time they enquire about one of our players, tell them where to go.

We do need a revamp of our forward line to bring it in line with world class status again so I will give my (classically slightly lengthy) tuppenceworth. Firstly is it 1 player or 2 that we require? The only regular front 3 player I would currently have in a starting 11 against the best sides is Walcott, (Santi as well when he occasionally plays in the front 3). For me the others are at best squad players. Giroud I like and feel can, across a season, have a big input for us but if lining up against the best in the EPL, Spain, Germany and Italy we need a more polished option. That is no disrespect to Giroud, and is it really so bad to be the impact option from the bench at a club that hopefully should be challenging amongst the elite again soon.

Podolski is an enigma. I feel he is our most clinical finisher but is only an ok left flank player. Could he be the quality central striker we need? I don’t know. What I do feel fairly certain of though is that we will continue with the 4-3-3 formation, so we need to look at the best fits for this. I don’t think Podolski sees himself as either a left flank player or a back-up squad player so if this situation continues into next season I can see only discord and a break down in relationship between him and AW. If AW doesn’t see him as the central player in our 4-3- then I think he and Podolski need to have a ruthless but no hard feelings look at it as for me it would be better for him and us if we quickly decided it wasn’t going to work out and both move on.

In that case we would need 2 additions to our front 3. If we don’t get top 4 I feel that certain options, if they ever were options, like Falcao, Cavani and Lewandowski would be redundant as my feeling is they will only consider a ECL club. I have picked 2 options that I feel are realistic ones and could come to us regardless on the understanding that we will push for the EPL next season and will definitely be back in the ECL the following. My choice would be LLorente up top, (a decent signing on fee should be able to secure him), and Jovetic for the attacking left role. I feel a line up of Walcott and Jovetic playing off the central Llorente is world class and furthermore, with a charm offensive by the club on them, attainable players. A front 3 line up like that with Jack and Santi behind I feel would have won the day on Sunday even with the defensive errors.

GoonerBthe one thing that impressed me about Madrid last night and Bayern at our place was the speed at which they fired passes into each other, fully confident that they would get a solid first touch….I think this is for two reasons:

    1) they trust in the receiver
    2) they normally play against centre halves who stay on their feet in the tackle and therefore are waiting for the mistouches rather than just trying to take ball and man

I find our passing of late has been too weighted trying to give the receiver a ball they don’t have to control, watch Santi and Jack receive any ball their first touch 9 times out of ten controls the ball and sets themselves up for the next touch be it pass or dribble. They are probably the only two who can play like that.

  37. GunnerN5's avatar GunnerN5 says:

It’s incredible just how pro Man U the English media are – the mass hysteria about what was at worst was an iffy red card really shows them up in their true colours- which is, of course, red (tops).

Lets hope it will be the beginning of referee’s standing up and being counted on to make the right decisions and not being subservient to the aura of Man U and the vile temper of SAF.

    Wishful thinking – me thinks!

  38. GoonerB's avatar GoonerB says:

GIE @12.37, I fully agree with that analysis on first touch. The question is would the 2 I suggested in Jovetic and LLorente have that required extra technical first touch control that some of our players don’t. I believe they would and our front line could become one of the most dangerous in world football. Interestingly I would not include Theo in the first touch problem bracket, although I know many would. Aside from the odd heavy touch which can happen anyway i think his cushioning of the ball at pace, even with lofted balls, so that he can run onto it has become very good. I feel Theo will become a better player still by some 20% if he has that extra quality in and around him which is why he stays in my first 11 front 3.

    HAHAHA RA, another pearler.

The thing that annoys me though is Nani rolling around on the floor. I get he’s a cheating scum who dives and flaps about, but i hate it when players roll around after they’ve committed a foul in a attempt to lessen the blow. His reaction looked like ‘but didn’t you see me? I was hurt too ref’

I’d love to take that Prince look-a-like out back and attempt to rough him up a little, when in actual fact I’d swing like a mad man…end up getting the stuffing knocked out of me, and have to retreat to a recluse lifestyle sharing Terry’s shoe box! It’d be worth it!

Mourinio is another matter. Walking to the dugout before the final whistle so he can grab attention. Then giving that stupid one line interview.

This confirms what ive always thought about him. Remember when he called Arsene a Voyuer, well thats because he loves Voyeuers. He wants to be looked at but Arsene refused his bedroom invitation so he got the hump.

I have no doubt, that if he returned to manage in London, within a year of his arrival he will be caught in Bounds Green car park Dogging.

  41. Red Arse's avatar Red Arse says:

    Hi GN5,

It’s not just the red top journos, either.

Graham Poll came out, in his role as an expert pundit in a daily paper, and said it was never a red card, as did the the head of the professional referees, speaking on TV.

I was surprised that it was red card myself, as I thought itlooked like a yellow. When you see the view from the refs position, Nani had both feet off the ground and studs showing, so it was a judgement he made, which would not have been an issue if Nani had been a little more careful.

Apparently, following the disgraceful and slightly similar act by Nigel de Jong in the 2010 World Cup, when he was not sent off, all CL refs have been told to punish high-footed movements that can injure or endanger opposition players. The ref was doing what he had been instructed to do, and if he had not he would have been disciplined and damaged his own career.

Many other pundits have said the ref should have used commonsense, but the rule book does not contain that word within it.

If that had been an Arsenal player, one suspects it might have been described as thuggish behaviour condoned by Wenger.

Plus ca change, plus ca meme chose, as Monsieur Wenger definitely would not have said! 🙂

  42. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

GN5, agree with you re the English media, their craven subservience to Ferguson and United really is pathetic, and I hope Ferguson and Ferdinand are properly punished for their behaviour (they won’t be).

But however brave he was in making the call at Old Trafford in such a big game, it was a very poor decision by the referee: to be a red card, Nani had to be deemed to have used excessive force in making the challenge (meaning he had “far exceeded the necessary use of force”), and not merely having been careless (no card at all, just a free kick) or reckless (yellow card). Nani was watching a ball in flight and his opponent (who could see everything) was coming from his blind side, so how can he be said to have used excessive force in making a challenge?

I hate defending a United player, especially one as obnoxious as Nani, but it’s poor to see a referee make a mistake of that order. And god knows, we’ve been on the wrong end of similar refereeing screw-ups in the past.

Still, nice to see United suffering a bit…..

  43. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

Red Arse, I’m sure you’re right, that the de Jong challenge on Xabi Alonso in the World Cup is one reason high foot challenges might have been prioritised for punishment. But that challenge was completely different to last night’s: de Jong saw Alonso coming towards him and jumped at him with his foot raised in a way that could only result in Alonso (who wasn’t watching de Jong, he was watching the ball in flight) being fouled and injured.

Too many referees just don’t have a good enough feel for or understanding of the game. If a referee can’t differentiate between a situation where a player’s feet are raised so that he can control a ball in the air, and can’t see an opponent because his eyes are on the ball, from a situation where a player can see everything and is clearly acting with an intent to hurt his opponent or being reckless about it, he shouldn’t be doing the job in the first place.

    @Gooner In Exile (March 6, 2013 at 12:37 pm)

Possibly 3 of our senior could do that (first touch, close ball control, pass & dribble – in one motion): Cazorla, Wilshere & Rosicky.

  47. Red Arse's avatar Red Arse says:

Tend to agree with you 26, the de Jong nastiness was far removed from the Nani one, which was not of the same order.

As I said, to me it was a yellow card, and I was surprised at the ref producing a red.

The fact is that Nani invited the ref to make the judgement, and like all human beings under pressure, especially where he might have felt his career was at risk, the ref chose to take no chances and please his bosses.

That said, I would not doubt his integrity — but his judgement is another matter.

Finally, I doubt the sending off had as much influence on the result as Manure are making out. Nani is like Walcott, a non-entity in the defence role, and the two goals scored would, more likely than not, have happened regardless.

Reflecting on what I have written, it may give the wrong impression that I care — I don’t! 🙂

  48. GunnerN5's avatar GunnerN5 says:

Yes it was a debatable red card but replaying it multiple times in slo mo it was very high and very dangerous and could have gone either way.

Personally I’m thrilled it was red and delighted that Man U are out of the CL, especially given the Van Pussy will not get a CL winners medal.

Nani is infamous for his cheating ways and the red was justifiable just for his play acting and injury. He could have caused a serious injury to Arbeloa and was lucky his boot/studs were not six inches higher as he might have made contact with his face.

Like I say it was an iffy decision but if I was reffing it would have also been a red.

  49. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

Completely agree, RA, I think United would have lost in any event. They were winning when Nani was sent off, and had a bit more than 30 minutes to hold out. Instead of digging in, they capitulated, and could have conceded more than the two they did let in.

    ………………………………………………………………………………………….

RA: I completely agree with your statement from 1:53.

Nani is an attacking player and his red card should have made no difference to their defensive capabilities. Where was Red Nose’s nous when it was needed the most – it was left wanting. They should have/could have created an impenetrable defensive wall instead of continuing to attack – in the end, much to my pleasure, they were outsmarted by Mourinho

Stop all that sweet talking CharyB, and tell us what you really think of them? 🙂

  64. Hehe Redders, let’s hope this is when the cracks start to appear in the facade of Old Toilet so their bid for a double flounders. As a side note wasn’t it VanJudas who failed to close down Modric when he larrupped in the equaliser? If so ha de ha ha !

I don’t know CharyB — but I am laughing at him anyway!! 🙂

Wonders never cease, on the Man U site they claim that Arbeola ran into Nani on purpose and it was he that should have been given a card – not Nani.

    1. Review of Youngsters performance in Next Gen series (see vid posted earlier)

    2. What happened to Steve Bould’s iPad (last seen in August/September)…evidence of lightfingered players, crap tactics app, or Arsene confiscated it for making defence better

    3. Frimpong to Fulham permanent bollox (Day 1 Jol tells Metro he would love to take Frimpong on loan for next season too, Day 2 Daily Mail says Jol would take him if free and that Pong is no longer part of Wengers plans)

oh yes bsby, that’s a greatest idea I have heard of for a long time – bring Wayne to THOF! He is a great player, he seems to have a 4D vision, complete awareness of others, a footballing brain.

He must be gutted that every time Manyoo play a big game, he is not a part of it as Fergie sits him on the bench. No wonder the lad is losing hair, terribly upseting. Let’s rescue him

    Young…..hm….don’t know, but Wayne defo

  70. Gooner in Exile's avatar Gooner in Exile says:

    Oh Evonne baby 😀

Just spoke to my brother who was at OT on the weekend (corporate deal with his Norwich based company), he really hated going because he did not want to see BSR in a ManUre shirt, then to make it even worse the biggest cheer of all ManUre players as read out was for BSR.

On Rooney he has a theory that he is being disciplined by Purple Nose for holding the club to ransom last year? I personally think Fergie was involved the whole time but maybe not and maybe he is showing him his wrath

  71. dandan's avatar dandan says:

Good Article GIE wouldn’t mind Rooney at the Ems although I have never believed that he was the player he was forecast to be from the moment he scored that goal for Everton against us.

I do find it disappointing when the very fans who castigated the referee when RVP was used as the means to cheat us out of Europe, take such obvious pleasure when the same treatment is visited on another English club.

Dodgy decisions against English clubs have long been a feature of CL referees performances and in my opinion should be a subject for outrage not joy whatever club is involved. You cannot run with the fox and hunt with the hounds and expect justice only for our club.

  72. oz gunner's avatar oz gunner says:

Fair enough Dandan if Manure were on our side when BSR was red carded against Barca, but I’m sure all the Manure supporters laughed their socks off. It’s only fair! Seeing Nani, Rio, BSR, and Fergie all angry/sooking is well worth overlooking the corruption.

and anyway It’s never going to change. Australia getting screwed out of the World Cup by eventual winners Italy thanks to a dodgy call and penalty still makes me angry.

  73. Domhuail's avatar Domhuail says:

I cannot see either Rooney or Young being of interest or on offer anytime soon for the following reasons:

    1) ManU don’t often sell their best first-team players, and rarely to rivals,
    2) Rooney is NOT over the hill but has, like Nani, been temporarily eclipsed by RVP…so SAF knows this and is willing to wait,
    3) Rooney is way out of Arsenal’s price range and, if any of the brain-dead fanboys on this site had bothered to think this through, they would realize how many better options we could get for the cost of a Rooney and Young.
    4) Bringing in a superego superstar like Rooney to AFC could easily signal to our young players that they’ll have to wait another 3-4 years before having a shot at the first team….not Wenger’s style at all.
    5) Rooney doesn’t have the character and personality to fit in well at AFC…he is far too egocentric and narcissistic, as well as being vulgar and ill behaved off the field (as well as occasionally on it).

I could name a half-dozen more but my final premise is that Rooney and Young would not be my first choice for AFC even at the best of times.

Sheepy, why would a fan hoping that Arsene signs Wayney Shrek make them psychotic? Hope, is quite the opposite of depression I would think. But then you are the nurse!! 🙂
