Corporal Jenks ……… Captain in waiting?

Following the match on Saturday, and during this week, we have seen a lot of chat about the wisdom of appointing Vermaelen as captain. If you had asked me at the end of the 2010-11 season who should captain the side if Cesc left I would probably have nominated Tommy.

Arsène chose instead Brave Sir Robin and whilst during the season it seemed an inspired choice the end of season events and his statement tore apart all the good work.

Now we have the captain many of us envisioned after that Annus Horibilus but since then we have seen a change in the make up of the squad. At the end of 2011 season we didn’t have Arteta, an experienced top level international centre half was a distant dream and we had unproven youngsters in every department. The squad now represents a different prospect, it’s full of experience and proven quality. There are still the odd sprinkles of youth that need encouragement and guidance but in the main this side does not need educating or organisation from its Captain it needs passion, desire and intensity. (thanks GN5) The rest can come from the coaching staff.

Vermaelen is no doubt intense but does he know truly what it means to lead this club, is he aware of the special responsibilty? I’m not so sure.

So who am I promoting to Captain to galvanise this current crop of players well its a player who makes his love for the club clear for all to see.

20121001-183546.jpg

Step forward Corporal Jenkinson, you are on accelerated promotion plan, and next season after the normal end of season Captains departure you young man are my pick for Captain.

We can all see in his performances what a bit of pride in wearing the shirt does for you, now imagine him instilling that into the rest of the team…and probably the most important reason, there is no way he will be swayed to look elsewhere, he loves our club like a fan, money is probably irrelevant, i’d guess he’d turn up and play for three square meals a day and a roof over his head.

What more can we ask for when we look at the man leading our team out on to the pitch.

I was going to watch Arsenal the same as the fans were and just count myself very lucky to represent them as a fan who has become a player.

It doesn’t come around very often and I just feel privileged and honoured to be that person.

Captain material….damn right!

  1. Sorry everyone and especially GiE, we’ve had a bit of a disaster backstage and had to publish this twice. This is the live one, I’ll keep looking for comments on the previous one but if you click on it from NewsNow is should now be dead 😳

  2. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gooner In Exile says:

Sorry Peaches when I use WordPress App iPhone it has to have a date (can’t just be saved as draft) I try to point it far enough forward but otherwise it just slips in whenever my date was….next time I’ll remove date when I get in front of website.

  3. Morning all, I see what you’re getting at GiE – a similar fast track to captaincy was what happened to Mr Arsenal and he did OK. If he performs like this for the rest of the season and displaces Sagna as first choice right back then, if TV05 continues to let himself down on the pitch, then maybe – till then, it’s early days.

  4. MickyDidIt89's avatar MickyDidIt89 says:

Wow GiE, what an apt topic given the “Heroes” chat.
Inspired piece of writing, and the Jenks commerative stone to his Grandad says everything. Very much Captain material.

  5. Gooner Sam's avatar Gooner Sam says:

A bit early do you think!

  6. LB's avatar LB says:

Sagna could find himself in a Lauren situation, the best for ages, then long time out, then no way back. PSG in January?

  7. chas's avatar chas says:

    Excellent, GIE.
    Loving the Corporal.

I haven’t seen him opening his mouth much yet while on the pitch, though. (except to tell Theo to feck off 🙂 )
I still think the captain needs to be a shouty type like Big Tone, but, then again, I wanted Arteta to be captain so what do I know?

    chary,
I think “if TV05 continues to let himself down” is ridiculously harsh.

  8. London, normally I’d advise against jettisoning experience but in this case I’m not quite so quick to question his departure. Some of his performances last year were a bit suspect (against Wigan at home for example) so perhaps he is on the decline anyway, plus his comments slating the club were a bit unneccesary. I think I’m probably being a bit irrational about Sagna, for some reason he seems to have gotten under my skin a little.

Ok Chas, maybe a bit strong, as I meant to suggest he has been exemplary off the pitch(saying the right things and representing the club well) but he has made a number of rash tackles leading to penalties/free kicks(at Montpelier for example) that have dropped us right in it. And then there’s his charging up field when we are supposed to be consolidating a lead.

    Chas,
About the shouty thing, I interpret it as respectful, afterall, he is a new boy. Having said that, the fact that he can give an earful to Theo shows that he has it in him.
    Chary,
I’m afraid I agree with Chas on the Verm stuff, mind you, I have to be nice to you as I think you are the man who can help me, and it involves “sequencers”, whatever they are.

  16. MickyDidIt89's avatar MickyDidIt89 says:

Blimey, Jenks has the bedroom of a twelve year old, and judging by the last season’s shirt, he still has.
Bloody bless that man, and make him skipper immediaely. At least promote him from Corporal. Major Jenks?

  17. Rasp's avatar Rasp says:

That’s a brilliant photo chas – I’ve inserted it in the post, thanks.

Thanks GiE, there is no doubt the Corporal has ArseDNAl, I’d be more than happy to see him as captain some time in the future

  18. Mdi89 – about Verm, it makes me wonder whether Wenger will be as ruthless with him as he was with Lehmann when he had a few howlers, but having made him skipper will make that a bit awkward.

Have to confess I’d probably be of little help with sequencers and sound/music/video editing, my 12 year old son did all of that on my youtube thing. 🙂

  19. MickyDidIt89's avatar MickyDidIt89 says:

    Chary,
Google it will have to be 😦

  20. Sorry Mdi89, I’m an old technophobe/luddite.

Anyone read the written judgement on JT ? Interesting stuff and surely he can’t appeal; I’m guessing he’ll wait till in the 14 days available for him ot decide whether to appeal or not to pick 4 matches which are of least importance for him to play, e.g Capitol One Cup and any dead rubbers in the Champions League.

  21. Morning all, this as most have guessed is a bit of a fun post coupled with a serious side. I think Jenkinson’s on field performances have surprised all of us.

If he continues that development and with his love for the club I think Captaincy is in his future.

Why not Jack as others have mentioned? I’m sure Jack has grown to love the club he has been here since he was 6, but is he a fan? There is I believe a difference.

  22. I thought Jack was a West Ham fan GiE; not that I think this makes him any less, or more, suitable to be a future skipper.

So Wenger has said BFG faces a fitness test tomorrow, so maybe it’ll still be the CB pairing we saw on Wednesday.

Surprisingly he said Chesney is still “Two or three weeks away” – which is exactly what he said a week ago. That worries me a tad.

He’s also been expessing caution about bringing Jack back too quick.

“Jack needs a few games, progressive build-up to get his body used again to competition, to shocks, to fights…we have to be cautious, not crazy, because of his talent you are always pushed in a situation where you would like to rush him back, and we have to resist that.”

So what do we think, will we see Jack before Xmas or after ?

  23. chas's avatar chas says:

    Terry is not a racist?

I don’t understand how the FA seem to suggest that there is no doubt about what was said, whereas didn’t the legal case fall down because there was a doubt?

  24. Big Raddy's avatar Big Raddy says:

I’m a fan, can I be Arsenal Captain?

I promise not to sign for my hated rivals, nor break down and cry in the centre circle when my team needs lifting. Nor will I leave to go to “back home” – I am already at home at AFC. I won’t smash my car through a wall whilst drunk. I won’t take a job as Director of football at MC for 8 bag full of gold.

  25. Chas, they are saying that JT’s evidence was contradictory with what they saw, his demeanour when he said he was questioning what Anton Ferdinand had said was not angry or resentful (of a false accusation) but disdainful.

In any case, you don’t have to be a racist to use racist language and contrary to what has been said by ill-informed sections of the media the FA’s case was not that JT was charged with being a racist but using racist language, also it seems Ca$hley changed his evidence later to make JT look better.

  26. johnnie nyc's avatar johnnie nyc says:

ok, first i’ll say, i just re-watched Olympiakos, Tommy almost gave the match away by sleeping on Mannones pass and also sending one straight to an attacker- all near our box- huge mistakes-that could have given easy goals.. also he committed at least one foul around our box AGAIN- even after last weeks disasters on free kicks.. and he was reckless attacking when we had a one goal lead much of the second half.. i think he should be benched this week AT LEAST, to think about this performance… —-
—BUT — I think people talking about him– no longer as captain now or in future, is really unfair.. before Chelsea this season, he has been excellent. i have mentioned before, after his long injury, he showed loyalty and extended his contract, when it looked like there was no loyalty left. he’s been a fan favourite for a reason, he plays hard and tough, with a tough attitude and spirit. and until this past week, he’s been much more disciplined.. so this week, so much talk about him being a bad captain,or replaced all of a sudden? —-
why would anyone want to be loyal to us, if we are so quick to dump our guys after a couple sub-par matches, or mistakes. i was shocked how bad he was this week,–but i’m not gonna forget everything good he’s done here. let’s encourage our guys ———

and by the way, i LOVE JENKS !

  27. chas's avatar chas says:

    chary,
I thought the legal case fell down because they couldn’t be 100% sure he said the word “black”. ( I know this is a simplification)

  28. Chas, it was the diffence in the burden of proof between to the two panels – the criminal court required “beyond all reasonable doubt” and the FA panel merely needed “on the balance of probabilities”.

Additionally the charges were slightly different, the criminal charge was ” a racially aggravated public order offence” while the FA case was one of misconduct.

  29. chas's avatar chas says:

I have to say in Tommy’s defence that he played in our first three games, all clean sheets and was a massive factor in keeping Liverpool to zero goals in the dippers game.

  30. MickyDidIt89's avatar MickyDidIt89 says:

Make Tommy a DM, then he can attack as well as defend AND stay Captain.

  31. That is an option Mdi89 – I think I saw Vertonghen used in that way last night by the Stringy chicken brigade.
That was funny, them snatching a draw from the jaws of victory.

  32. MickyDidIt89's avatar MickyDidIt89 says:

    Chary,
Damn I hope Vertonghen is a disaster, after I spent three years going on about us getting him.

  33. chas's avatar chas says:

Yeah, but Vertonghen was shite yesterday.
I’m not sure Tommy’s passing is up to playing in midfield, he’d have to release it so much quicker.
I think we should make him centre forward. 🙂

  34. MickyDidIt89's avatar MickyDidIt89 says:

I do want the Spuds to have a extended run on thursdays for obvious reasons. Culminating, obviously, in losing the final in the 92nd.
    Its a fun thing.

  35. Chas, I reckon he think’s he is one already !

Same here Mdi89 – I want the Spuds to struggle to get into the next stage, just make it, then deplete their squad in the process and then tumble down the League table.

  36. MickyDidIt89's avatar MickyDidIt89 says:

  39. Just reading through the FA Report, and something occurred to me…

Has Anton Ferdinand been charged retrospectively?

Law 12 Fouls and Misconduct excerpt:

A player shall be sent off the field of play and shown the red card, if, in the opinion of the referee, he:

    (n) is guilty of violent conduct;

    (o) is guilty of serious foul play;

    (p) uses foul or abusive language;

    (q) is guilty of a second cautionable offense after having received a caution.

He has admitted in his statement that he uses several word that would not pass the Peaches Mum test and therefore (p) above.

So why hasn’t he been retrospectively red carded?

Does anyone else think football would be a lot cleaner if the refs just started applying a red card for (p) above?

  40. Okay i’ve got further and it states the same old retrospective action they keep hiding behind

  41. MickyDidIt89's avatar MickyDidIt89 says:

    GiE,
The whole card system is woefully inadequate.
Pink Card: girlie dive/fake injury. Stand tea-pot style in front of home fans for 2 minutes.
Green: “drop and give me twenty” speaking unless Captain.
    Orange: ?

  42. Micky after watching that British Female Hockey player return in the latter stages from a broken jaw suffered in the early rounds of the competition, we may have to redefine girlie 😀

    “Captain material….damn right!”
Think Wilshere will have something to say about that!
Vice captain? maybe, after Sagna has gone and Jenks becomes regular.

  65. Red Arse's avatar Red Arse says:

Well that’s what happens if an apostrophe isn’t judiciously applied.

    It could have been ‘the Underpants of Rosie’ writing the comment, [possessive/genitive case] as in Rosie’s Underpants, or;

It could have been a typo – and the underpants were simply a particular rosie hue, as in ‘rosie underpants’, caused by being accidentally put in a colour wash.

We need to know! Or could we be arsed? 🙂

But the comment, in any case, seems to imply we have been unkind to one or more of the Arsenal players — and my forensic reading of the comments indicates a lack of a factual accuracy in the stated premise.

  66. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gooner In Exile says:

RA you’re right I had forgotten the lack of apostrophe, so therefore we can only assume he is reading the blog through a big mound of underpants made by a company called Rosies?

Or is it a big mound of underpants owned by several Rosies

  67. Red Arse's avatar Red Arse says:

I liked your Post, GIE, the captaincy issue is not sacrosanct and should be discussed even if in a light hearted fashion.

The stock Arsene comment on the captaincy role in the past has been ‘we have eleven captains’ and one can understand by that he means each player must take personal responsibility for his own actions on and off the pitch.

What most of us want is someone, as captain, to badger or cajole those players who appear to have let their heads down, or not to be playing in the tactical manner demanded by the coach.

It is this latter point where TV needs to stop and reflect on his own play, as most pundits, while admiring his derring do, cringe when he hares up field leaving the defence imbalanced.

    Bouldie will sort it! 🙂

I wrote a response to your earlier comment regarding the iPhone and its propensity to swiftly gobble up available battery charge when travelling away from a power source, such as in a car.

I have had a similar problem, and the solution, which I suggested to you, was to fork out the princely sum of £5.49 on a mount and a car charger from Amazon. Mind you, with Micky`s obsession with his mate`s butt`s, he`ll probably like it to be Rear Admirable ……..sorry…… Rear Admiral Jenk`s !, Terry already has him down as Wig Commander !. 🙂
    VCC
I`m shocked you are not going to split any potential lotto winning`s with me after the situation I got myself into for you.! .
After your problems in the love department, I had my top scientist`s improving my TackleNav ( remember my invention AAers ? ). The old one just needed a womens post code and hey presto you arrive at their bedroom ( sorry , I haven`t e va va vonne`s post code for you ! ). The updated version is luminous red and will instruct you on the glicsutra , all is needed is a position number.
I put it through intensive test`s and it came out with flying colours ( one actually, luminous red ! )
I took a few samples around to Stretch . I was showing him how to work it in his bedroom, then we heard the door open down stairs, it was Mrs Transplant, this was going to be embarrassing, so stretch shoved me in the wardrobe, lucky enough the doors were louvered, so I wasn`t going to suffocate.
Mrs Transplant told Stretch she wanted an ” early night ” , F**k ( no, that was my reaction ) . So i`m stuck in the wardrobe, it`s dark and my Red luminous TackleNav is swaying from side to side !. Mrs Transplant say`s to Stretch, ” what`s that red light moving side to side in the wardrobe, it look`s like a Cylon ! “. At this point , I accidently pressed “69” into the TackleNav, which then blurted out, ” Recalculating, when possible make a U-turn, take first exit and arrive at destination !”. I panicked and burst out the wardrobe, wearing nothing but a luminous red TackleNav and one of Stetche`s trannie syrups, straight out the house and down the street.
All of this to try and help VCC !.

I must agree Micky, I`m still not over the chav game and without a win tomorrow there`ll be 14 days of depression and I wont speak to the missus in that time, she`ll get angry and being of mixed race , half East End girl and half Klingon warrior, my life will be hell !.
I`ve only just got over her last temper tantrum where I had to have the washing machine removed from my arse, lucky enough with foresight I had an extended 5 year warranty !. That East End temper. I dont know !.

Sorry VCC, I didn`t fit it with a anagram facility, but it does have a 3D Hologram facility, for when your asleep and the missus isn`t !.

Excellent post. I am a forty year old man and im not ashamed to say I love Jenks. He’s what I have been dying to see at the club for a long time now. It’s no secret that the squad have lost a lot of the tradition and respect for the club over the years and we need it back but the likes of Jenks, Gibbs, Jack, Alex and dare I say it Theo are starting to make an impression.( with the guidance of Mikel) But oust TV as captain….NO. This is where Mr Bould earns his pennies, we have a great player and a great captain who just needs guidance from a legend on how to be a disciplined and worldclass defender.

Excellent post TA. Jenks for future captain? why not. He bleeds red & white so that will do me.

I am very pleased that my post follows chas and barum. From there previous posts i know they have the same feeling of disconnect with the modern player as i do. Maybe, just maybe, the likes of Jenks will create that special bond between the support and players that in recent years has been missing. The future will tell.

Anyway, its late, Mrs Terry is round her mums and ime all alone. What should i do? Think i will watch my video of the 71 cup final. But first i might scour the internet to explore the psycological and philosophical reasons why so many people view pornographic material on the web. hahahaha

    Night all.

  109. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gooner In Exile says:

Evening Barum and Terry I think Frimpong also brings a lot of that “knowing what it means” on to the pitch too. I reckon with the recent signings plus last years additions we may just have the senior pros they need to learn from and get better. I’m thinking Podolski might be this generations Bergkamp, not in a footballing sense but in a professionalism on/off pitch, training hard and workrate. There’s a reason he only manages 60 odd minutes, and its the shift he puts in.

(The DB10 comparison is based on quotes from Merse about the impression DB10 set in training…chasing down and embarassing the hungover players etc)

My one worry tomorrow is that only Arteta knows how to get it done at places like Upton Park, will be interesting. It’s a tight pitch at Upton Park. And the crowd will be right on too of them, it’ll be a test of character for both Gibbs and Jenks at full back, and our wide advanced players will have to work hard back to help snuff out crosses.

I’m spending the next few days walking in the woods of New England (“Fall” colors and all that).

It means I won’t be able to do a Post on Sunday – but I will do one next week once I’m back at a laptop (I’ll try to do one on Tuesday that you can have available from Weds).

I’ll try to keep an eye on the WHam game via the iPhone but I suspect reception will be variable.

Here’s to a good win for the lads (and us!).

    Morning all.

I am afraid I also won’t be around today as my daughter is seeing a specialist this morning and may be in hospital all day for further tests.

I read an interview with AW that Szsney could be out for a further six weeks with his ankle problem.

Hard game today and the least we must aim for is a point.

  116. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gooner In Exile says:

Kelsey, hope there is some good news following your appointments today, all the best wishes to your daughter.

As for Szczesny and his ankle it’s a worry. We don’t seem to be very good at fixing ankles. 😦

I think many people are starting to forget all the contributions Vermaelen has made consistently the past few seasons just because he hasn’t performed very well for the past 3 games or so. It’s funny how fast fans can change their opinion on Vermaelen, from the best defender in the team to an inconsistent at best defender. Every player has bad patches, its not that uncommon. I think that Vermaelen definitely deserves the captaincy as he has been around the club for quite some time now and is one of the last few remaining players that have been at the club for more than 3 seasons. You can’t question the fact that Vermaelen has passion too and wants to win.

It’s just like a fairytale story isn’t it? A youngster working his way up to the club that he has loved since young and eventually improving leaps and bounds to the extent that England and Finland are fighting for his loyalty. Without a doubt Jenkinson has caught many of us by surprise with his drastic improvement this season, so impressive has he been so far that it is also going to be very hard for Wenger to bench him when Sagna gets back. The fact that Jenkinson is “one of us”, a die hard fan with strong passion is quickly making him a fan favorite too. However, Jenkinson is still 20 and IMO he is too young for captaincy even if its a couple of years time. He still has lots to learn, and if I were to choose, he’d be the next captain after Wilshere.

  118. Red Arse's avatar Red Arse says:

    Adrian,

Fear not. GIE was running up a tongue in cheek Post to keep us amused and give us something to talk about.

TV is excellent, and we all recognize that, but he does have a tendency to let his enthusiasm get the better of him occasionally.

Why? Well I imagine that he wants to give the midfield/forwards his support and to put some oomph into the game, which as captain is admirable, but it can leave him exposed.

No big deal. If he needs to adjust this there is no one better than Bouldie to help him do that. TV is fine! 🙂

  119. Morning all

We have a New Post …………………

  120. James's avatar James says:

That’s a fair comment! I think Wilshere could be a more fitting Captain if he retains his previous form. He has the technical ability and a massive love for the club!
