Ten games to go – Leave your predictions here

After an incredible run of five PL wins in a row, we find ourselves now very well positioned to qualify for next year’s CL tournament. Who would have thought that after the deep-dark triple losses against Fulham, Swansea and the Mancs in January, followed by a goalless draw at Bolton on 1st February, we would bounce back in such an emphatic manner by beating Blackburn, Sunderland, the Spuds, Pool and Toon – scoring 18 goals and conceding 6 goals on the way?

Although I have always believed that all ingredients for success in the near future are taken care off by Arsenal, I must admit I experienced a bout of raw melancholy a few weeks ago, when we lost the away cup-matches to Milan (CL) and Sunderland (FA). It was the manner in which we lost these games that really worried me: the way our formation/system of football looked so toothless, clueless and the way Wenger appeared not to have any answers to it all.

Well, things have changed dramatically and it has come at the right time of the season: we are now fourth, with just one point behind the Spuds and three above the Chavs. What’s even more important is the new-found belief in this team. It looks like Arsenal is finally on the right track and has sorted out its inner-demons: a mixture of determinedness, passion and desire to work for each other by all our players has brought us to what the club’s strap line of ‘Victory Through Harmony’ is all about. The fans are uniting behind the team again as well, and the atmosphere during recent games at THOF has significantly improved.

But we are not there yet: with 10 games to go we have to stay focussed and humble and make sure we do actually qualify for the CL. In October/November we had a spell of winning 7 out of 8 PL games, but unfortunately it was followed by a period of winning only 2 PL games out of 8. It has been a topsy-turvy season, and there are no guarantees we are totally on top of it now.

So how will it end? Our next ten games are against: Everton (a), Villa (h), QPR (a), Citeh (h), Wolves (a), Wigan (h), the Chavs (h), Stoke (a), Norwich (h), West Brom (a). At this stage of the season in particular, none of these games are automatic 3-points-in-the-bag contests.

It would be great to hear everybody’s views re the way the season will end. Let us know your predictions:

* How many points will we get from those 10 games?

* What will be the Top-six at the end of the season (in order)?

* Will Arsenal remain unbeaten?

* How many more goals will RvP score?

* Who will win the PL?

* How many games will Wilshere play of the ten remaining?

* How many goals will Arsenal have scored at the end of the season (currently 57)?

* How many more come-backs this season?

* How many more assists by Alex Song between now and the end of the season?

* How many clean sheets?

* Who will win the CL this year?

* Who will win the FA-cup?

Finally, as a separate question: If we can buy one more player, maximum budget £20m (excluding salary package), who would you like it to be?

Feel free to elaborate on any of your answers if you feel like it, as we like to know your insights. I will make a spreadsheet with all your answers and let you know the top-3 winners of Best Footie Predictors, after the season has ended!

  1. Great idea for a post TA, have to think about my answers and come back later with them.

It seems that anyone that wants to use an avatar will need to be logged in through wordpress before they can leave a comment as avatars/Gravatars are linked to email addressess and at the moment one can’t comment without filling in the email box.

Our avatars identify us on the blog so it would be a shame to lose that part of blogging but if people feel precious about signing up to wordpress then they need to choose between avatar or no avatar.

There’s a lot of grumbling going on on the wordpress support forum so they may change the setting back. I’ll keep you informed.

  2. Probably shouldn’t tell you this but I used a bogus email address to post that comment 😳

    Great idea, TA.

Do you think a sub-phrase to the title, like ‘Leave your predictions here’ would pull the punters in?
Everyone loves doing these kind of things, especially if you can see the results.

    Off to have a think.

  9. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

Chas, re your forensic analysis of the crowd at the Newcastle game and the investigation into racist abuse, you’re right that, if that’s all there is, the case against the fan looks bloody thin. If there’s more, and it can be shown that there really was racial abuse, I’m all for permanently turfing out the guy in question, and the police prosecuting him, but there has to be more than that.

Looking at the recording reminded me of the incident during the game that was going on at that stage, when Tiote went down near the touchline but Arsenal kept playing. It was actually the second time Tiote had gone down, since he was suffering with cramp. I really don’t think play should be stopped for that; if Tiote were fitter and his training regime better, he wouldn’t be getting cramp midway through the second half. Being better trained, fitter and more athletic is an advantage of the better side, so why should we sacrifice that advantage? Should other players slow down when Arshavin is on the pitch, to allow our least athletic player to catch up? It’s different if a player is hurt in a collision etc, I’m all for booting the ball out of play then. But it gets on my tits when someone like Pardew whinges when the cause is either the inadequacy of his training regime or the lower fitness levels of the player.

    Rant over.

  10. Hmmmmm so what do we think of the monsters?

I completely agree about the cramp issue. there’s so much play-acting these days, it’s virtually impossible to tell when someone is genuinely hurt.

I went to Google to find Arsenal Arsenal and then saved the site to
“my favourites” . When I want to participate I simply go to “my favourites” and click on Arsenal Arsenal and the site opens up cleanly – every time.

I’ve never had an issue logging on, the only issue I’ve ever had is the red and black screen issue and even that is rare and short lived.

I have an avatar (not that I care), but not of my choosing – it just appeared.

I’ve never been near Word Press.

So I guess my question would be – why do other bloggers have to use Word Press?

I think even though you haven’t previously logged in through wordpress you would now have to because they would recognise your email address and thats where the glitch is. I wasn’t really ronely 🙂

I see ‘Arry, for the second time this season, is preparing the case for the defence:
“Finishing top four is not a must [to keep those players],” said Redknapp. “If Arsenal don’t get in the top four, are their best players going to leave? If Chelsea don’t, will their best players walk away?

“It doesn’t work like that. We don’t have a divine right to be in the top four. If we finish in the top four — and I think we will — we’ve punched above our weight.

“If we don’t make it, it’s just one of those things. We’ll have given it our best shot. We’re third in the league and we would have taken that at the start of the year.

“We’d be way over expectations if we finished in the top four. We haven’t finished above Arsenal or Chelsea for a long time and it looked like it would be tough to finish above Liverpool at the start of the season. We’ve finished in the top four once, not every year. If we do it this year, it will be fantastic, and I think we will.”

Hahaha – whatever happened to “we can win the league this year”?

  105. TotalArsenal's avatar TotalArsenal says:

Peaches, here is how it can happen.

    Citeh’s games:

Chelsea home draw – 2 points
Stoke away draw – 2 points
Sunderland home win – 0 points
Arsenal away loss – 3 points
West Brom home win – 0 points
Norwich away win – 0 points
Wolves away draw – 2 points
Mancs home loss – 3 points
Newcastle away loss – 3 points
QPR home win – 0 pionts

All joking aside, Ba looks the absolute nuts. I;’ve sen him score all sorts of goals, but I was very impressed with his work rate and desire on Monday night.

We’re overloaded (with quality) in def and midfield. Of our strikers, most can play any of the front 3 positions, eg Walcott, Gerv, RVP, Campbell etc…so I’d quite like an out and out centre forward who’s great in the air and has pace.

  124. Red Arse's avatar Red Arse says:

    TA,

You become ever more interesting. To Sharkey ” I like your avatar – a man with a big, fat moustache.” 🙂

Have you ever taken the Rorschach test? [I am sure you know, it is a psychological test in which subjects’ perceptions of inkblots are recorded and then analyzed using psychological interpretation!] 🙂

    Here are a couple of old ones;

A patient saw his psychiatrist for the first time and was given the Rorschach test.

After each and every ink blot the patient calmly said,
“That is a couple having sex.”

    The psychiatrist finished the test and said;
“This is interesting, you appear to have a preoccupation with sex.”

Quick as a flash, the patient replied,
“You can talk — you are the pervert showing me the dirty pictures.”

    Did you know that;

    Psychotics think 2+2 = 5.
Neurotics know its 4, but they worry about it all the time

Neurotics build castles in the sky.
Psychotics live in them, and psychiatrists collect the rent

At this juncture, I feel strongly pulled to our comedy duo, the amazing Glic and the brainy Terry!! I am suffering withdrawal symptoms you two — so come out, come out wherever you are!! 🙂

  128. TotalArsenal's avatar TotalArsenal says:

Cheers London Gunner! Is it not amazing how everybody thinks we will finish 3rd now. If had done a similar post after the Manure this would never have been the case. You are expecting us to score a lot of goals between now and the rest of the season, and let’s hope you are right 🙂

Finally, as a separate question: If we can buy one more player, maximum budget £20m (excluding salary package), who would you like it to be?
‘Thiago Alcantara’ and when Farca come calling again we make up the other 20mil we lost on Cesc..

i dont believe he has ever been given a decent chance at the Arsenal and he has been on the end of a few classy goals for us..

maybe its his attitude that only Arsene has seen not fit, but id take him back as a third/fourth striker (fox in the box) over Chamack any day!

68 will be enough. Sure of it if you look at every teams run in and the timing of the games. We might make 71. We will get 4th we won’t get3rd that’s my prediction.

Everyone always thinks you need to win every game. The truth is Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea will all drop lots of points between now and the end of the season.

We are playing very well and we will make champions league but let’s face it there is every chance we might get an injury and have to play Djourou of Chamakh before the seasons out which must drop us some points.

    No letting up from Wenger

    Friday 16th March 2012 17:44
Arsene Wenger will not allow complacency to trickle into his Arsenal squad ahead of what has been described as an easy run-in.

After winning their last five league games, the Emirates Stadium club are mounting a late charge for third place and the automatic qualification for next season’s Champions League that follows.

Unlike derby rivals Tottenham, who currently sit one point clear in third spot and remain in the FA Cup ahead of Saturday’s quarter-final with Bolton, Arsenal have no distractions going into the final stretch of 2011/12.

Wenger’s team’s pursuit of their North London rivals is also thought to be helped by a winnable 10 remaining fixtures in which they only face three clubs – Everton on Wednesday, Manchester City and Chelsea – who currently sit in the top half of the league.

But Wenger told Arsenal’s official website: “[Sometimes] there are games that you think will be difficult, but they are slightly easier than expected, and sometimes the easy game is harder than expected.

“You don’t make any plans. The only thing we know is what is needed from us – to be at our best no matter what people say about the situation.

“[It is important] to keep your squad available and keep your spirit, togetherness and teamwork at a very high level. Also you must maintain belief and not tighten up. Be relaxed, focused and determined.”

Arsenal’s recent run has included victories over Liverpool and Newcastle to leave the pair trailing the Premier League’s top four by at least eight points, but Wenger has not ruled out either club making another surge.

“Of course the most obvious battle is between Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal, but you have to wait two or three games,” he said.

“There are 10 games to go, but three games ago we were 10 points behind Tottenham.

“Things can change quickly. You just want to be focused on your next game and give everything.”

  196. TotalArsenal's avatar TotalArsenal says:

I agree GiE, that’s why I used ‘defensive abilities’ rather than our defence. Like most of us, I have enjoyed the energetic and powerful defensive displays from Koz and TV in recent games, but I am still not convinced they would be our best possible pairing. I have a feeling that with the BFG in our team we have a better chance of getting a clean sheet, but then Koz/TV really support our midfield, even our attack, very well, which could lead to more possession, more chances and goals…

  198. Hi all, late show from me but a good idea for a post from the maestro TotalA.

    My predictions:

    * How many points will we get from those 10 games?
    22

    * What will be the Top-six at the end of the season (in order)?
Arab Camel Shaggers FC, ManUre, Arsenal, Chavski, Spuds, Dippers

    * Will Arsenal remain unbeaten?
    No

    * How many more goals will RvP score?
    8

    * Who will win the PL?
    Arab Camel Shaggers FC

    * How many games will Wilshere play of the ten remaining?
2 sub appearances – but hopefully none otherwise Psycho will return him to us broken like he did with Theo a few years back.

    * How many goals will Arsenal have scored at the end of the season (currently 57)?
    75
    * How many more come-backs this season?
    2
    * How many more assists by Alex Song between now and the end of the season?
    5
    * How many clean sheets?
    3
    * Who will win the CL this year?
    Franco’s Team
    * Who will win the FA-cup?
    Mackems

Probably crap predictions and the reason why I’m no good at Fantasy Football leagues.

  199. oz gunner's avatar oz gunner says:

    * How many points will we get from those 10 games?

28 points. and why the bloody hell not. I never go into a game thinking we will lose, nor do i want to think it’s a possibility! City haven’t convinced me, and at home we will beat them, same goes with the chavs. We will beat West brom (even in almunia is in goals). Stoke may scrap a draw thanks to their orc tactics!

Our toughest game will be against Everton, they are a tough unit especially at home.

    * What will be the Top-six at the end of the season (in order)?

    manure
    city
    Arsenal
    chavs
    toon
    spuds

    * Will Arsenal remain unbeaten?

    yes.

    * How many more goals will RvP score?

11 more, shearer who? Then again he scores when he wants, so i hope he wakes up and thinks:
RVP: ‘good morning wife, 20 more goals sounds good’
RVP wife: ‘Arsene and the fans will like that’
RVP: ‘then i’ll sign a contract, TA said so!’

    * Who will win the PL?

Man United, how they keep doing it is beyond me, i wish fergie retired a few seasons back when his management was in question. No fergie and no refs = a team who don’t make the top 4!

    * How many games will Wilshere play of the ten remaining?

0, wrap that boy in cotton wool, keep the England vultures away, and let him heal 100%
He will have enough pre-season games to find match fitness

    * How many goals will Arsenal have scored at the end of the season (currently 57)?

    80

    * How many more come-backs this season?

1, we will concede early against Stoke. It’ll act as a wake-up call though resulting in a scrappy fight back and a 1-2 win thanks to a late goal by Ramsey (take that Shawcross!)

    * How many more assists by Alex Song between now and the end of the season?

    3

    * How many clean sheets?
    7. Kozza and Verm will solidify the defense and make it a impenetrable wall!

    * Who will win the CL this year?

    Bayern

    * Who will win the FA-cup?

I’d like to see Everton win it, Moyes deserves it.

    * the 20 million $$$ question:

I like Kelsey’s thinking, Torres would be great. RVP, torres and the pod! Wow what a strike force

Although how about Diaby and 20 million for bastian schweinsteiger?

As an alternate plan B with Chamma and Bendy out the door i’d like to see Olivier Giroud, with enough money left over to relieve Affelay of his Barca nightmare

Here’s another way of predicting the final positions in the EPL.

Based on the assumption that each of the top seven teams, in their final 10 games, will beat teams they play who are not in the top seven and will break even (draw) with the teams they play who are in the top seven.

This would be the final table.

    1. Man U – 95
    2, Man C – 88
    3. Spurs – 77
    4. Arsen – 75
    5. Chels – 69

  206. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

A little catch up on some bits and bobs from today:

Llorente? I don’t know him well enough but his goal against United is a nice one. Great to see a traditional side like Athletic Bilbao do so well – they still only recruit players from the Basque country or with Basque heritage, making it even more impressive they (like only Barca and Real Madrid) have never been relegated from La Liga. Very impressive to see them comprehensively outplay the biggest club from world football’s richest league.

The call for Joel Campbell is a sold one, that boy is part of our future, no doubt. Whether it’s next season is difficult to say. But as LB says, Miyaichi should definitely spend at least a good chunk of next season on loan, honing his prodigious talents.

Re Total’s comment at 3.54pm, that the turnaround in our season has prompted so much positivity amongst Gooners that we now expect to finish 3rd, although I am one of those optimists, I’d still be satisfied with 4th. All of that said, it still feels wrong to speak so warmly of 3rd or 4th place.

  207. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

Alan Pardew wants van Persie to call Tim Krul and “say he perhaps got over-exuberant”? Do one Pardew, you’re just trying to keep the story alive so you can attract a bit more attention. I wonder if Pardew called Wenger or O’Neill about his own over-exuberance. Prat.

  208. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gooner In Exile says:

If we loan Myachi again I think we are short in wide areas. Also he has only had 6 months around his teammates (last season in Holland, half of this in a hotel in Bolton). Let’s get him in the set up, especially for Carling Cup, but also his pace off the bench will scare defences. How good would it be to start the flying pace of Theo and Gerv and then when their spent bring on more pace.

I think finishing top 4 should give the majority of Gooners real pride this year, we have been kicked as a club from pillar to post, and everywhere in between, by the written, spoken and televisual media. Opposition fans have laughed and taunted, even some of our own fans and at one point a growing vociferous discontented group were threatening to launch all manner of protests, yet here we sit in 4th place with our “worst team ever” and set to kick on and finish third…..any true supporter of our club should be walking around shoulders back chest out singing “Oh to be a Gooner”.

  209. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gooner In Exile says:

Alan Pardew should STFU. I do hate his demeanour as a manager, he strikes me as someone who feels he is owed something and is developing an Allardyce style chip on his shoulder.

  210. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

You’re right Exile, a top four place this season would be something to be proud of, given everything, including the anti-competitive position of the money-clubs. Those wannabe protesters, blimey what a deluded bunch.

Re Miyaichi, I’d be happy for him to be with us for the first half of the season but I’m sure his apprenticeship would be served well with another loan period. He does look a pretty special talent, so intelligent for a kid playing school football little more than a year ago and with touch and vision, as well as pace. It’s one thing Wenger’s scouting team spotting the likes of Goetze when they’re identified by plenty of others; but finding gems like Koscielny, Miyaichi and perhaps Joel Campbell, that’s really impressive.

It’s also where the real value is.

Look at Fergie admitting Berba could be off at the end of the season bought for £30m at age of 27, 4 years later he will be leaving for free having played 147 games and scoring 56 goals. That’s a cost of £205k per game, or £535k per goal (without including wages).

If you add in a conservative estimate of £50k a week wages the cost is nearly £275k per game or £720k per goal.

Value for money? Any hope in hell that Arsene and the board will spend that kind of money….unlikely….thankfully!

I can see Myachi being with us for Carling Cup, and then depending where we are in competitions come January take another look at it.

well said. I agree another loan would be good, but i guess it really comes down to Arshavin. He may very well come back with a new rejuvenated attitude and firing on all cylinders. If that’s the case Ryo will have pod, gerv and AA in front of him so a loan deal would be necessary. Preferably at a team like Bolton who play football, if he’s sent to a team like the wolves it’ll be a waste of time.

Those figures on Berbatov are unreal, what a complete waste. Not sure why he wasn’t sold a couple of season ago (especially before this season, with hernandez, rooney, and welbeck) to recoup some of the money spent.

    @ GM

definitely agree Campbell will get a special talent visa.

RVP will score another 12 goals (hattrick twice).. with 5 of that will be Song’s assist.. and Arsenal will stay unbeaten.. It will be another 28 points to come.. Total 80 points.. And will be in third place.. Others things are not important for me.. Go gunners

I would never knowingly endanger your recovery to full health. I swear I haven’t seen any virtual spittle at the corners of your comments for months.
It must be the paranoia struggling to get a foothold in your troubled psyche once again. Resist and you will become strong.

    1) got delap tied up in her basement

    morning Redders,

you never know with Australian weather..raining in my front yard, sunny in my neighbours yard etc..

ive been to the grand prix in melbourne for the last 3 yrs prior to this year and its an awesome weekend..also good to see my team (mcLaren) take the front row in qualifying..well done to Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button flying the the flag high for the Brits…

you should all be very proud.

But it seems it is the well known AA lothario Kelsey with some of his harem!! 🙂

    Anyway, congratulations, Geoff!! 🙂

  249. 20 million for Llorente of atheletic bilbao and not just for that goal against utd but becoz we lack a tall technical player in our ranks.

    * What will be the Top-six at the end of the season (in order)? Manure, Citeh, Mincers, Arsenal, Spuds, pool

    * Will Arsenal remain unbeaten? NO
