In darker moments, when all rationale and clarity has gone AWOL and I’ve struggled to find cohesion, it’s difficult to see the positives when concentrating solely on the negatives. If Monsieur Wenger has time, or even instructs a member of his staff to read the myriad of Arsenal Blogs, I hope ‘ArsenalArsenal’ is right up there as ‘A must read…’ If so, here’s what I would say.
Dear Arsène,
‘ArsenalArsenal’ is full of wonderful passionate Arsenal fans, all ages, sizes etc., and most are loyal disciples of your teachings. They are unwavering in their belief, and have put down many a nay-sayer with a pithy, witty turn of phrase. Their resolve and strength is unbelievable, and like you, their intelligence has done for many opponents.
At this point, I must beg your forgiveness. There have been times this season when your demeanour has looked tortured, your furrowed brow perplexed, and even, dare I suggest, the look of someone who wasn’t sure whether or not they wanted to fight for unforgiving fans, whose emotions have been all over the place. I lost my way, and became a nay-sayer. I questioned everything from the running of the club to your transfer policy, and the performances out on the pitch.
The good people at ‘ArsenalArsenal’ have read my rants of ‘Wenger Out…’ and the lambasting of certain players, mostly with good humour – though it has led to some lively debates – and I am now in a better, more considered frame of mind, one that tallies with the majority of the afore mentioned Blog. You are an Alchemist. A dignified man, who has refused to cow-tow to the incessant pressure applied by the blood-thirsty gutter press, and yet again you have trumped them. You have used your intelligence, efficiently and calmly, and in such a way that it represents a fundamental lesson to us all, particularly people like me.
You have always done right by our club, Arsene, and long may that continue.
Please accept my unreserved apologies for ever doubting your ability, you are an incredibly talented manager, and we are lucky to have you.
I have learned so much in my short time on ‘ArsenalArsenal’, but probably the most important lesson is the power of positivity. We are and always have been a special club, which upsets outsiders to the point of insane jealousy and incandescent rage. Of course it has always been thus, and had I not allowed myself to become engulfed in the tidal wave of negativity, I would have recognised and acknowledged this along with everyone else of The Arsenal faith. There is a growing sense that this team is going to be very special indeed, and we are priveliged to be a part of it.

Arsenal News 24/7

Kelsey get on that phone Mate I hav to pay my dues and take the Mrs. to Costco down on Peaches patch. So ring by 10.30 please Peaches you dont seem to be at home.
Will read post now.
Welcome back Herb, it is sometime difficult in life to keep faith in many things when swimming against the tide of negativity that can be drummed up in an instant by a hostile media storm.
Thank fully as you say Arsenal have a good man at the tiller and our ship is back on course, sails set, decks cleared and on course for glory again. Dont despair at being swamped it happens to all of us at times, but your excellent article shows that when push comes to shove you are first and formost a gooner.
So as I said before welcome home stay with us and Peaches will lead you into battle with the rest of the AA crew.
Morning all, and good to see you back with a brave “confessional” type of post, Herb.
Moving from the sublime to the ridiculous, did anyone see the antics of that poor excuse for a human being John Terry ?
Not only did his usurping of RdM as manager on the touchline confirm what Chesney pointed out about player power but he used mawkish sentimentality to try and elevate his standing by dedicating the win to the Belgian children.
Eveything is all about him in JT’s twisted little world.
What an absolute muppet !
I hope the court hangs him out to dry when he’s found guilty of racially aggravated public disorder.
Herb,
Welcome Back. A fine and apposite post.
I guess it is easier for the older Gooners to take the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune and this season has seen some of the worst outrageous fortune I can recall. :
Blackburn. 3 shots on target – 4 conceded.
MU. 10 shots on target 8 conceded.
Spurs away . Doing fine then Sagna breaks his ankle.
Liverpool. Stupid sending off.
Losing all our full backs
Losing our best MF for the whole season
Too many injuries to cope with the tiredness in the second half v Milan
BFG injured having finally settled in.
Diaby
Gervinho beginning to come good then off to the ACN
etc etc etc
All things considered, it is one of AW’s best efforts that finds us competing
Chary. In the words of the great philosopher Mr. Forrest Gump “Stupid is as stupid does”.
Thinking of which did anyone notice that Nik B was found Not Guilty? In my opinion being out at 3 in the morning with Lee Cattermole is reason to give him a custodial sentence!
True, Big (and) Randy and maybe Bendy has the same legal team as Twitchy and OJ Simpson.
Did anyone else notice Drogba’s horrendous diving/simulation last night ?
Funny how when an Arsenal player is accused of diving the media, led by the Daily Fail, starts up an anti diving crusade, but when Drogba, Rooney, Young, Suarez, monkey man etc do there’s pin drop silence from the pig sloth hacks.
Herb, I can honestly say thats the biggest surprise of a post I have read on AA. My eyes widened when I saw that you were the author. (due to content not the quality of writing). I also had a few goosebumps reading the love letter. 😀
I know I get most annoyed when critics of the club lambast the players and manager with stories that when repeated enough become the reality (players wages, no defensive coaching, bonuses for club profits). I have no problem criticising team selection/style/tactics, we all have different opinions on how football can be played.
Perhaps an example of this is JD contract renewal which still (to my knowledge) hasn’t been announced by the club, yet we heard on the day when TR7 signed.
It is easy to get caught up in negativity, it is the easier path to take. But recent performances by players and fans at the Emirates have shown what a good thing positivity can be. And as a comparison I went to the home games against BBurn and Sunderland last season, both of which we failed to grab the winner, both of which the fans were more interested in moaning. Fast forward a year and to Monday night where the fans were as responsible for that win as the players on the pitch.
In short as supporters all we can do is give the team a lift, what we get we can’t control.
Well played sir.
dandan – I haven’t been home but I am now if you’re still around.
GiE, as most people who went to the match on Monday have attested to, there was a different vibe to the crowd than this time last year.
In that short gap between the bar codes scoring and Robnis equaliser there were no nervous groans and moans – just cheering/singing.
As fans we can take some credit for the comeback which is the way it should be.
Thanks Herb,
You’re not the only one on here to have harboured doubts about the direction in which the club was going.
One of the most important functions of blogging is the catharsis of ‘getting something off your chest’. Having the grace to admit that you may have been wrong is equally important – you’ve done it with style and passion, great to have you back on the blog.
WOW WOW WOW.
Im astonished Herb, really i am!
one question though,
(knock on wood) in theory, if we were to slip into 5th place at seasons end (which i doubt), Would you still stand by your letter??

(The more eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed some similarities between my response to Herb’s post and Exile’s at 10.10am. What can I say? The boy from Norwich just said what I wanted to say, so why bother tapping out a less interesting version? 😉 )
Hi Herb, 🙂
Liked your Post!
But seriously, good stuff Herb, really well written and says so much that you’ve changed your mind.
Wenger is many things: most good, some bad. He has made mistakes, and he will again. But I really do rank much of what he has done SINCE 2004 as management of the highest quality. Mostly that is in reference to what he did up until May 2010 with no money – we had no right even to think we could finish in the top 6 or 7 in that time, let alone make at least two genuine challenges for the title, get to finals of the CL and League Cup, qualify for the CL and its knock stages every year etc. And recruit some of the best young talent from across the world. Ok, numerous of them defected, lured away by more money, more glamour and better chances of trophies. And Wenger still did things like sign Silvestre, which we all knew was a bad idea. But when you take everything into account, the man worked miracles in that period, held up by so many as a period of failure.
And this season, we’ve seen a microcosm of that period: disastrous start, prompting a period of existential angst, followed by careful, slow building, then a confidence-sapping blip, before the flourishing in Feb-March (usually a period of pain for us), showing us all what can be achieved with unison of players and fans.
Now there’s the small matter of keeping it going, getting 3rd or 4th spot and going into next season with a couple of new players and a lot of optimism.
Well said Herb.
And a fine piece of writing to boot.
Hi All, 🙂
I hope you will not mind if I comment about the chat last night.
I only read the comments this morning and was concerned with the way things were left. I do not want to lose anyone!
My reason for wanting to bring this up now is because I care about AA, and by definition all the good denizens of the site, which of course includes Glic and MerryTerry.
There are certain rules which are inherent in this site, and perhaps should be clearly stated. [not necessarily in these words]
(1) Discriminatory or defamatory comments of a religious, racist, or sexist nature will not be tolerated.
(2) Personal insults, personal abuse, excessive swearing or inappropriate language (including slang for female genitalia) will not be tolerated.
That’s all to the good.
The issue raised recently regarding humour, and whether it is appropriate, or not, is not so clear cut because it relies on making a value judgement, which will vary from person to person.
For myself, I am with Rocky, in that I have not been offended by any of the humour on AA, and indeed laugh at most of it, but I would not want humour of a scatological nature to be used in ‘polite company’, which invariably means female friends or family.
Rather than get into the minutiae of who said what, and who was, or was not offended, can I suggest that a simple third rule be added to the above?
(3) Humour which is deemed to be offensive by a site administrator, or to be of an excessively scatological nature is unacceptable.
The “Peaches’s mum’s test” could be applied to decide in the case of any dispute.
This would take away from any personal recriminations, everyone would know the ‘rules’ and we can get back to being a happy bunch of bloggers again! 🙂
I rest my case M’luds, and I would like to see both Glic and Terry back on here quipping away, please! 🙂
By the way Herb, I don’t see you as having been a lone voice on here.
Many of us have had our doubts and reservations and there have been times this season when I thought it might all go pear shaped for our beloved team.
I know Rasper has expressed concern at how the club is run, Kelsey has hinted at behind-the-scenes troubles and so on.

Herb,
I am not really surprised by the content of your Post. You seem to me to be a dignified and humble man with an intense passion for Arsenal, who wears his heart on his sleeve.
Some AAers, Terry and Dandan foremost among them, can be relied on to remain staunchly upbeat even in the most adverse of circumstances, while the rest of us go slightly numb at setbacks, but rejoice when all goes well.
Whereas you are an Arsenal barometer, quickly down when you sense all is not well, but bounce back quickly and positively when you feel all is well with your beloved club.
You are always refreshingly candid, and I enjoy reading your stuff so that I can see which way the wind is blowing!! 🙂
More Posts, please!!
Hi TA,
Are you having trouble getting on the site?
Redders
Your 12.23 is a wise and reasonable suggestion. I would hope most of us would have no problem signing up to it.
Hi Herb, I ,for one, am not so surprised you wrote this blog, and I salute you for being so humble and honest.:)
I often feel you are driven strongly by the emotions of the moment to which you always add a strongly reasoned and, to a large extent, factual justification. This often leads to very strong comments which paradoxically contain strong levels of subjectivity AND ‘pure’ truth. So when you are down as a consequence of a number of subsequent bad results, you can argue very strongly that all is not well at Arsenal and when you are up, because we played well for a number of games, you can be very upbeat about Arsenal.
For me that makes you a great blogger, although I often don’t agree with your views. But your honesty, knowledge and passion for the club always shine through, and long may it continue.
I am a big believer that doubt and humility are essential for any individual who wants to make progress in his/her personal life, and and today you have shown all of us how it’s done. Top stuff Herb – glad ‘you are back’ 🙂
Hi Rocky, 🙂
Well that’s two of us.
Rasp,
I had the devil of a job getting on AA this a.m., because WordPress insisted I had to sign up with them, and I also now have my own WordPress blog, apparently!! 🙂
What is going on? Does anyone know?
Oi, TA, 🙂
You copying me?
You are as bad as Rocky!!! 🙂
Rasp, yes I am now thanks, but it was a bit of a jigsaw to get back on. Maybe you should post a short procedure of what people need to do to be able to log themselves on, as I expect a few out there burning to reply to Herb’s excellent post, but not knowing how to get back on?
Hi RA,
Others have experienced something similar. All I can say is that we haven’t changed anything so I assume it is a WordPress problem. Happily everyone seems to have found a way on so far.
RA, I have written before that I believe you are a psychologist in real life 🙂
Thanks TA, oh dear, I hadn’t realised that it was that big a problem …. and the timing is unfortunate 🙄
I’m not in a position to do as you ask at the moment and peaches is out I believe. If anyone else could post the instructions I’d be very grateful.
Rasp,
I have a gravatar account and password.
To log in I clicked on the ‘W’ symbol below and put my email and gravatar password in to the boxes that came up.
The email, name and website boxes disappeared and it said I was logged in.
I could then comment.
Once you log in and comment you get an annoying grey bar at the top of the screen with loads of wordpress options on it.
If you click sign out, it takes you off the Arsenal Arsenal page into a wordpress page!
Great post Herb. I’ve been up and down a bit this season. If we had sacked Arsene after the defeat at Blackburn and got another manager in. If that manager had got us to where we are now he’d be hailed as a genius. As far as the atmosphere in the stadium goes maybe it’s because a lot of the “negatives” are puting their tickets on the exchange and people who actually want to be there are buying them.
If you use the log out option at the bottom of the comment box it leaves you in wordpress but not able to comment. Trying to comment logs you back in!
Oh oh, now it says I’m logged in but still can’t comment. What a balls up from wordpress.
Looks like I’ve broken it now!!!!!!!
I was always good at system testing. 🙂
AA, in one way, is a bit of a virtual Arsenal pub. The problem is we cannot wisper something which is very funny to a few fellow bloggers but not to all, as we could do in a pub.
I regard Terry and GLiC as great, warm and passionate fellow bloggers and none of their comments have ever upset me, but I can understand that other bloggers take issue now and again. I agree with previous comments by the likes of RL and RA, but I would understand why GLiC and Terry would find it difficult to ‘censor’ themselves more regularly, as they appear to be honest, creative, very funny, free human beings who need to be able to express themselves without having to think too much about whether it could upset somebody – as this is never their intention in the first place. Life can be bloody complicating at times!
I totally respect and support the views of Peaches and Rasp about what sort of site AA should be – a family site/’pub’ – and I hope too that GLiC and Terry can keep contributing within this framework, although I can see why this will be difficult for them.
Whatever you do, please don’t disappear totally as you will be truly missed!
Turn your back, Gus.
I like your post, Herb.
Respect for the sentiments expressed.
The test always comes when we get a run of poor results.
A quick reminder from TA, Terry, dandan or numerous others about how lucky we are to support the greatest club in the world, soon sorts me out.
TA,
Psychologist/psychiatrist? Not after what I’ve heard!
Patient: Doctor, I keep thinking I’m invisible.
Psych..: Who said that?
A man went to a psychiatrist who told him; “In my opinion you’re crazy!”
The man said: “I want a second opinion!”
The Psychiatrist said: “OK, In my opinion you’re ugly, too!”
Oh, no — what have I started! Add them to the banned list! 🙂
Silvestre “Which WE all knew was a bad idea”
Not all, some of us understand the concept of having experienced back up.
Thoroughly peed off with WordPress.
I’m “logged in” — I’m “logged out” and must “log in” — and all without touching the wretched thing! Pathetic!
I was sent this in an email and nearly posted it yesterday.
I found it pretty amusing, but in the light of recent discussions, I’m not sure if it passes the fit for purpose test.
Could you let me know your opinions, please?
If it’s not appropriate on a football blog, then please delete.
All drugs have two names, a trade name and generic name.
Example, the trade name is Tylenol and it’s generic name is Acetaminophen.
Aleve is also called Naproxen.
Amoxil is also called Amoxicillin and Advil is also called Ibuprofen.
The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra.
After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin.
Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.
Pfizer Corp. announced today that Viagra will soon be available in liquid form, and will be marketed by Pepsi Cola as a power beverage suitable for use as a mixer.
It will now be possible for a man to literally pour himself a stiff one.
Obviously we can no longer call this a soft drink, and it gives new meaning to the names of ‘cocktails’, ‘highballs’ and just a good old-fashioned ‘stiff drink’.
Pepsi will market the new concoction by the name of: MOUNT & DO.
Thought for the day: There is more money being spent on breast implants and Viagra today than on Alzheimer’s research.
This means that by 2020, there should be a large elderly population with perky boobs and huge erections and absolutely no recollection of what to do with them.
A very interesting post Herb.
I, like quite a few others it seems had to rush to the bottom of the page to find out who on earth had written it.
As I continued to read the words welcome back to the bright side of the street came to mind which I was going to use to open my comment but it seems as though that idea came to a few others as well.
Ah, sod it, welcome back Herb.
good post herb, and welcome back.
Well done on swallowing your pride and apologizing.
If theo can become more consistent, and diaby can stay fit for an extended run of game, then i’ll be eating some humble pie of my own
LB, hahahahahahahahah, he was shit, though, wasn’t he?
Herb,
To make it easier for Le profeseur ro read :-
Norfolk,
Longtemps, sans voir
Fair enough LB, and it is a good theory that has more often worked out than it hasn’t. But I can honestly say you are the only person I know who thought, based on what we’d seen Silvestre do for United, that that particular signing was anything other than poor. And I’m usually characterised as being a Wenger Loyalist.
Anyway, on the topic of the functioning of the site, can I just chuck in that it’s become a right pain to access on my iPhone in the last week – the text usually won’t display. All fine on computers, just a prob on the iPhone.
And re TA’s virtual whispering thing, Online Gooner did have a private chatroom facility, which would allow “whispering” of verboten material.
Ooooh chatrooms, 26, I remember them well !
Not those sorts of chatroom Chary. Mucky blighter.
Chas
Well, if we shift the goal posts so that we are viewing the decision to sign Silvestre with hindsight then yes he wasn’t that good but if you view the decision to sign him (and lets’ be clear here, he was only signed as back up) before he arrived then I maintain it made a great deal of sense. It made even greater sense when he scored against spuds in what was his second or third appearence.
Mucky blighter 🙂
I wrote this at the time.
Why were united prepared to sell Sylvestre for so little?
In the close season Sylvestre and his agent request a meeting with the powers that be at United to discuss Mikael’s future. United inform them that with the squad being as it is there will be very limited playing opportunities for Mikael and in view of that it might be wise for him to seek employment elsewhere.
The agent says that in order for Mikael to secure a contract that gives him the same wage and in view of the loyalty that Mikael it is only fair that he be allowed to leave on a free; they agree on £750,000.
The agent thinks Sunderland maybe Man City which Mikael thinks ok, at least I stand a chance of playing — then — out of the blue, all his Christmas’s arrive at once; Arsenal contact him, he tells his wife, she thinks, house in Hampstead, eating in decent restaurants, shopping in London with all the other French wags. Mikael gets best blow job he has had in months.
Unfortunately we don’t, but we do get experienced cover for Clichy and we don’t have to worry so much about Senderos, next best thing.
As for “Why were manu prepared to sell a player to us after 34 years?
Sylvestre is small beer to them, whereas, he is a very welcome addition to us.
Ah and that reminded me of why exactly we did buy Silvestre. The reason was that Senderos decided to take up the offer from Fulham really late in the transfer window, leaving us without experienced back up…………..enter Silvestre.
Makes complete sense to me.
I’ve had a bad night, don’t get me started on Sylvestre 🙄
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. That was the sound of the cattle prod. lol
Leaving aside peaches’ mum’s test, I agree with just about everything you wrote there LB: it was a great move for Silvestre (and yes, probably Mrs S too), and it was good for United to get him off their books. But for us? Well, let’s just agree to disagree, I’m happy to acknowledge the ones I called incorrectly (I wrote off Rosicky quite a while ago, I never believed van Persie could reach these heights and I genuinely thought Jay Emmanuel-Thomas would be a superstar), but Silvestre worked out pretty much as expected. I hear it’s been pretty much the same story at Werder Bremen.
Late in the transfer window? Senderos joined Fulham on 8 June 2010. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=793949&sec=transfers&cc=5739
Ok, I’ll leave it now, wouldn’t want to provoke the wrath of Rasp….
Provoke the wrath of Rasp? He agrees with everything you say on this subject, the only reason he isn’t joining in is because he knows if he does he will break Peaches’ mum’s test in the first sentence.
I just liked the phrase “wrath of Rasp”. Sylvester the Cat would’ve had fun with it…..
Afternoon all.
26 I read the blog 95% of the time on iPhone, no problems, altho on occasion it logs me into the “mobile” site which is not good on iPhone, scroll right down to the bottom and choose full site. Sometimes if videos are posted it can affect the remaining comments when in mobile site….no idea why.
No need to worry about that 26m 😛
With due deference to peaches’ mum, no-one will convince me that the signing of Sylvestre was anything other than an embarrassment and that opinion comes from the benefit of foresight, during-sight and hindsight.
If that was good business we should rush out and sign Stephen Hawking for our next goalkeeper
Would not let me post with my normal wp email addy and not signing in
Testing using a test email addy
GiE,
Hopefully the tekky dept will get in touch with WordPress later to see what is happening.
Ok so it appears I did not have to sign up to WordPress with a non registered email addy, so shouldn’t prevent anyone from posting.
Looks like I was wrong about the timing of when Senderos left and Silvestre joined. It reminds me of the dislike so many people seem to have for Squilacci, I just don’t understand why they can’t see that he was brought in the hope that he would never play a game. He should only play if four other CBs get injured and no one wishes that. The same applied to Silvestre, it was not his fault that there were so many injuries.
Hats off to you Herb.
We haven’t always seen eye to eye, but that’s only because I didn’t want to believe the negative sides of the Arsenal that you were brave enough to put into words.
No ‘I told you so’s’ from me Herb, just a simple congratulations on a brilliantly honest post.
Actually LB, to be absolutely fair, I do remember that MS played well for us for the first 7 or 8 games, and didn’t he score against Spurs in the 4-4? So it wasn’t all bad!
We also both got it wrong re Senderos departure leading to Silvestre signing: Senderos did leave in the August Silvestre joined, as you said, but it was when he was sent out on loan to Milan, ie. it was our call to ship Senderos out, not Senderos’s.
tweetie pie was absolute shite. Wasn’t he the boundah that headbutted Freddie too? The embarrassment of messi scoring 4 against us was mostly down to him. He also started the global downturn if my memory serves me correctly.
Stephen Hawking Rasp 🙂 unfortunately he’s managing tottnumb
It seems to have kicked off here last night/yesterday. I hope we haven’t lost Terry and glic I enjoy chatting with them both. Kelsey said I’m a one off. Is that good or bad? Anyway for once it wasnt me (unless I’ve missed something)
I think when we loaned Phillipe out it was another case of becoming unplayable such were the fans feelings, I think JD may go the same way. Would you prefer big Phil over Squilli? It’s the same question as would you prefer NikB over Cham?
As a general principle, I agree with you LB; there is a lot of unthinking slating of players, especially those who play defensive roles. It may be patronising to say it, but not all football fans really understand what the defensive aspects of the game are about. Squillaci isn’t the best, but he’s not nearly as bad as many make out, especially bearing in mind he’s a squad player, the trouble being his successes (like those of many defenders) happen quietly and unobtrusively.
My gripe on this sort of topic relates to Almunia. He’s a very competent keeper, not the best, and not good enough to be our first choice keeper, but he’s still pretty good. Just think back to the complete battering Barca inflicted on us in the first half of the game that ended 2-2 (Cesc broken leg etc). The only reason we were in that game at halftime and not 4 or 5 down was Manuel Almunia. And there are other examples. But they get forgotten very quickly, while his failures are given maximum attention. As a backup keeper, he was a great signing for virtually nothing.
GiE it is the same question, and therefore the same answer…..get rid of em all!!!!
I’m worried about fans turning on Gervinho. I’ve read some negative stuff about him. I really like him though.
The back-up becoming the number one is a problem though 26.
26.
On the note of Squid being a squad player, do u not also think that certain fans live in the fantasy world where we have 5 world class players in all positions!? They don’t realise that squad players are difficult to come by. Players who can come in on short notice and play at 100%.
Also, fans have been screaming for experience for ages, but signing a first choice experienced player is not easy and usually expensive. Therefore, someone who has been there and done it but may only be 3rd or 4th choice is invaluable. Plus, they usually cost a lot less.
Completely agree with you Slim. It’s probably harder to sign the backup players than it is to sign the stars, for exactly the reasons you mention. And then there’s the dimension of needing to afford space for younger players to develop. One of the reasons Chelsea (admittedly, they did well last night) are suffering is that they haven’t brought through the young talent, Sturridge aside. What ever happened to MacEchrean (or however you spell it)? Or Kakuta? Or Bruma? Had these players been allowed to come through, the pressure on their ageing squad would be reduced. As it is, they’re in a bit of a pinch.
GM @ 2.40pm: Agreed! Also agreed re Gervinho, another likely victim of impatience.
slim. I love the way fans say we need a “world class” DM, striker and centre half. What do they men by world class? Messi and Ronaldo?
A few people on twitter said it was lucky that TV scored as Gerv was “ball watching” I watched it again a few times and he slows down when TV goes past him to let him have a clear run (I presume)He than air kicks it (like you do on the sofa) willing it in. He had a bad miss but probably not as bad as TR’s but TR is flavour of the month so that’s not so bad.
Shame about Eric Abidal. He’s so young. Hope he gets through it.
Thanks to each and everyone of you for all the generous feedback.
As with anything in life, there is always an element of being triumphantly right or spectacularly wrong, with plenty of grey areas in between.
To have the ringing endorsement of so many esteemed bloggers and authors is extremely rewarding and heart-warming.
I don’t profess to be the most intelligent, and I could never match the ‘Pulitzer Award’ writing skills of a Rocky, GiE, Big Raddy, TA, or LB, but to have a Post accepted on here is an honour, and it’s always a pleasure to read your comments and Posts.
Thanks too to you Norfolk, I don’t speak a word of French, so I’m trusting that it’s all in good taste.
Did anyone else think chelsea were scum last night and embarrassing for English football?
Yes GM, I said that a few times earlier this morning but no one took the bait(or they were ignoring me). 😦
How about Drogba falling down clutching his face when the italian who was running away from Drogba DIDN’T EVEN MAKE CONTACT with him ?
Look away now Gus.
Very very well played Herb. Great sentiment very well put !
Herb,
You didnt answer my question sir..
By some misfortune, if our great club was to slip to 5th place at seasons end, would you still stand by the letter?
Or terry playing manager chary?
GM,
Di matteo embarrassed himself after the game when he went into hysterics celebrating with players who looked like they couldnt give two hoots about him
GM – exactly, that front bottom has no self awareness and is always surprised that people point out the imbecilic(but perfectly correct in his view) things he does time after time.
He has a rap sheet almost as long as Joey Barton yet the retards of Stamford Bridge worship that sub human semi-moron they have to represent them as Club skipper.
Typical Chavski, no class (crap fans and no history of course)
According the the Guardian Football weekly, the Chelsea players think RdM is a joke. They don’t respect him as a man or a manager. Hence the TurfMuncher playing manager on the sidelines – I would like to see him try that when Jose or Ancelotti was in charge.
p.s. Come season’s end will the sight of JT falling to the ground and watching RvP score be the Golden Moment?
That’d make sense Big (and) Randy; a hack was saying pretty much the same thing on Sky Sports this morning, like John Terry calling the manager “Robbie” – hardly a clear indication of who is in charge, but a clearer sign of where the real power at Chavski lies.
I did laugh at the commentary, one of the few pearls of wisdom from the asinine commentary team on ITV, when you saw a shot of both Terry and “Robbie” waving their arms and shouting tactics from the dug out they said “The man in the suit is the one who is the manager” lol.
26, had a point re Squillaci, or was it LB? He may have been signed as a ‘back up’ but that is to forget he was a French International CB at the time. Some back up. OK he did not play much but they presumably rated him highly.
He was always doomed to failure in the fans’ eyes tho’ because they (LG and others) were screaming for a big, ugly bruiser of a CB who was good in the air and could duff up the likes of Drogba and any other big Effer.
A slight, short little French guy was never going to match their expectations.
Award winning Glic and you Terry Telescope, I hope you are not on here only because you are baffled by the non-award-winning nonsense of WordPress, barring you from AA, else I will come and get the pair of you!!!!!! 👿
Just saw some of cuddly JT’s non-coaching from the sidelines. Very funny! But even if the senior Chavs do have no respect for di Matteo, they may be adopting the same psychology they had when Avram Grant was there: essentially ignore the manager and have the senior players coach the side from the pitch.
I detest them but we are a long way from having beaten Chelsea, they will drive themselves forward now.
Hi rURp,
I’m in my 46th year of supporting Arsenal, and in that time Arsene Wenger is head and shoulders above anyone else we’ve had, so yes is the answer.
I agree with many on here with regard to the standard of referees in the PL, and the fact that they show an unhealthy level of bias towards those in the North-West. That is a big factor in determining the overall performance of our club, and one which I hadn’t taken into account.
I can’t decide whether Howard Webb is a Man Utd or a Liverpool fan, because he definitely helped Liverpool win the Carling Cup.
I am so pleased you did a headline post Herb.
GM: it was meant as a compliment.
I think GIE asked the question about waiting to play Everton next week.
if they play as they usually do and by some chance get a goal as they did against Spurs they will try and sit on it for the best part of an hour as I would not call them an adventurous side.
dandan, I have been in a competition all week, will be in touch
Thanks for your kind words Sharkey and Kelsey.
I just posted again and it vanished. Also the screen today is red with black writing until I press F5. I am automatically logged in but every two weeks it logs me out for no apparent reason and I have to enter my password again and my wordpress username is different which makes it more complicated.
The ref for the Chelsea game last night was very poor too, it seemed to me.
Kelsey,
All the blogsites seem to be having similar problems. A WordPress snafu!
26. I fear you may be right about CHelsea being formidable opponents but perhaps THFC should be more concerned 😉
Thanks for the compliment Kelsey. If your AA is coming up Red it’s because your connection is slow and it’s not loading properly. I get it sometimes here. When my son has been on my pc I have to input password again as he must delete something. chelsea are scum.
As it stands, we have nothing for the next 5 days – so if anyone is feeling inspired, please feel free to submit a post (or two 🙂 )
For what its worth my comments are going straight on…and I’m blogging from work.
I don’t even have a WP account !!
Aaah – that might actually be the reason I’m getting a ‘free pass’
I hope the mancsum get a spanking later.
the chavs have to play spuds, us and shitty before the ned of the season.
Sharkey,
It seems that if you have an email address or User Name logged with WordPress you have to open a WordPress account which is flipping irritating.
I know (have heard) that ACLF are considering a move to their own blogsite in the future. At the moment everyone over there is posting in black and white sans Gravatars.
Love GM’s sign-off to his comment about IT issues at 5.20pm – I think I’m going to follow suit and just sign off everything I say with “Chelsea are scum”.
“The weather today is overcast, but the cloud should clear in time for the end of the afternoon. Chelsea are scum.”
“I love you darling, you’re the best thing that’s ever to happen to me. Chelsea are scum.”
“I’m afraid it’s bad news, your grannie has died. Chelsea are scum.”
Yup, that works for me, thanks GM!
Would be cool to have an email address
…….@arsenalarsenal.com
testing testing
Chelsea are scum.
Mancini is a ponce.
The mancs need 3 goals to avoid going out of the ur hopeless cup
chelsea are scum
mnmnm
Evening all.
Anyone else happy about the Chavs going through last night? Keep them nice and busy in the cup competitions, they’ll be so busy trying to win one of the cups they’ll take their eye off the league.
I’m back at ‘king last
If you push enough buttons anything is possible. I have absolutely no idea where I’m blogging from, and stuff looks different.
Irish,
Hope they all go through to their respective finals and then lose 🙂
Chelsea result was very good for us, but they cannot win it. Only “One Team in London” can do that!
Herb,
Apologies. Wrote you a long thingy on how much I loved your post, then discovered I couldn’t get on.
Focusing on negatives is a very good thing to do in my book so as to avoid laurel resting. Very happy for you that the other side is now clearly visible as well though.
Been to my first ever “workshop” today and it was like being spoken at by Ricky Gervais in the Office. Good news is for now I’m the most responsible driver in the Parish. For today.
Micky. Well played. You must be the first Didit to pass their driving test.
Must off to strap on the nosebag.
At least I’m good to go for tomorrow.
Till the morn, and the early birds.
MIDI – Semi finals in both competitions for me for the Chavs – with extra time in all the games leading up to, and including, the semis.
Ah Raddy,
Sorry, spent forever trying to get the sodding thing to work and must now go and scrub up.
You probably won’t know about these “speed awareness” courses, but you get one crack at them in lew of three points.
Really off. Nite all.
United bolloxed. Lovely goal from Rooney.
Raddy,
Every time a DidIt becomes the first in the line to do anything, he always becomes the last to do it at the same moment. We are a truly hopeless tribe.
Good idea to try to educate the miscreant criminals who totally disregard the speed limit.
Hanging is too good for them IMO 🙂
Match Commentary – “Alex Ferguson becomes the first Manchester United manager to see his side knocked out of Europe twice in the same season” 😆
Irish. MU were awful and deserved to lose. How they beat us twice is a mystery
Hi all
I’ve just left a couple of comments on the wordpress support forum about our problems with having to login through wordpress before leaving a comment. There is uproar on there as we’re not the only ones having this problem.
It could be a gravatar issue – although not confimed – one member posted that gravatar uses have to login. I always login through wordpress so that I can manage behind the scenes. I’ll keep an eye on the forum to see if they accept that they’ve mucked something up.
Sorry, thats all I can do at the moment.
Good work Peaches
https://twitter.com/#!/sbj001/status/180375890264461312
BR – Agreed, Bilbao played some lovely football, very impressed by them.
Peaches – I’d to log in as well just there.
I had coffee with the lovely Raven haired warrior today, aint I the lucky one. Trouble is she and my wife got on so well, I may well have dug a biig hole for myself. 🙂
Rob,
The bit you wanted to see starts at about 1:23. You need it on fulll screen to see it properly. 🙂
DD. You lucky fellow.
I spent all day in the library doing research on the differences between British and Danish Organic Farming. Dull, dull, dull.
Way to go chas 🙂
Also you could use a bogus email they all get recognised, I probably shouldn’t have told you all that 😦 but you could also try ch@yahoo.com
Often when I’m on another computer and can’t be bothered to sign in I do that ………………
Just checking my info …..
Oh, so I get to post a comment but without my Gravatar 🙄
BR I admire your stamina, time to sit back with a drink now and watch City follow there Manc neighbours out of europe
As soon as I enter my correct email address my Gravatar appears ………. just like magic 😆
Bonehead. Not seen that before. Very amusing.
Great atmosphere and really good to see an almost full stadium at the end of the game.
Haha, thanks for the tip, peaches.
I have a few disposable addresses set up in case of spam.
I’m sorry …. but I linked this song to my sister on facebook cos she’s finishing her college dissertation tonight and since its now invading my brain, y’all must have it stuck in yours.
LB
Be lonely no more!
I agree with every word you have written about Silvestre and Squillaci.
Silvy ended up putting in some ropey performances after an OK start for us – the main reason being that he seemed to suddenly lose not a yard, but a furlong of pace.
And Squilly struggled in a struggling team. He’s not a bad player and has also had some good games for us (although his good performances are all overlooked by the haters).
Irish 😀
BR – that’s a song that’ll stay in the head for ages. I had a …. ahem .. disagreement with this one at work today and I know round 2 is coming in the morning … no doubt that song will come into my head and I’ll just start laughing and singing it du du du DU DU DU DOOOOOOOOO
She won’t laugh cos she’s a muppet >:-/
Have just switched on the TV – Man U out and Man Shitty now 2-0 down at home and 3-0 down in the tie! Love it!!!
Irish I like that one, thank you
Sorry, I was forgetting myself. Chelsea are scum.
Sorry to be boring, but I’ve had no WordPress problems (although I do generally stay logged in to WordPress when posting on AA).
Every few days or so I’ll find that I don’t automatically log in to WordPress when I link to the AA site, and have to go through the process of logging in again. Minor inconvenience.
Schnitzel versus barcodes.

I am the same Rocky
0-2 to Sporting Lisbon 😆
Dandan – glad you like it 🙂
City fans boo off players that shouldn’t even be wearing their shirts. Music to my ears. Chelsea are scum.
City have been given a lesson, oh dear. Great wailing and gnashing of teeth in Manc Land tonight, Bless em. LOL
Irish, I have to say, I didn’t last very long with the Final Countdown. Any longer and I’d be plunging forks into my ears. Chelsea are scum.
26may – 😆 I think its a classic, I love that song. Always makes me feel happy for some reason ha ha
P.S. Chelsea are scum.
“We can’t think negative at this moment,” said Mancini. “We are positive and we think we will win the Premier League and the Europa League.”
How you thinking now Roberto?
I know we went out last week, but for both Manc clubs to lose both games of two legs in Europe against supposed weaker opposition is very amusing 😀 😀 😀
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1rB578hbjM
Van Wolfswinkel. Are we allowed to say that?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CrcetB_cYw
Whoops, better with commentary. Chelsea are scum.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ0pbciKZio
How long now before Tevez is back in City’s first team?
Thanks for the videos Bonehead – nice goal from the free-kick.
See Irish, I’m with you re Lady Gaga, but Europe? Nah!
The atmosphere at the Wastelands is woeful. No driving the team forward to a famous recovery there.
Just looked it up: Sporting are 4th in the Portuguese league. And Athletic Bilbao are 7th in Spain? Oops. It’s criminal that the Manc clubs have been given such a free run in the PL this season, mustn’t happen next season.
Chelsea are scum.
Dandan – reckon he’ll be back next week.
26may – If you agree with me about Lady Gaga, then you’re a friend of mine 🙂
Chelsea are scum.
Spurs are scum.
Nasri still on the bench. Chelsea are scum.
Spurs are pondlife. Chelsea are scum.
Is Mancini looking like a ponce?.
Chelsea are scum.
A friend of Irish – that’s going on my CV.
Shame to see Abu Dhabi have pulled one back. I still hope van Persie is watching this.
Chelsea are scum, and so are all the others.
Oh yes bonehead, Mancini is maxing out on ponceness.
Chelsea are scum.
😆 That’s like gold, a seal of friendship from me ha ha
Aguero dive, penalty to Shitty. Chelsea are scum.
Bugger, Shitty now winning on the night. One more and they go through. Chelsea are scum.
Lets hope it goes to exra time. 🙂
Can’t go to extra time Dandan unfortunately
Ooooh! Joe Hart very nearly headed the winner right at the end but it was clawed round the post! But Sporting, who really did look like the 4th best team in Portugal by the end, held out. Shitty out – ho ho ho! Yaya, Balotelli, Nasri, all absolutely rubbish on the night.
Chelsea are scum.
HO HO HOThat was great fun
Tehehehehehehehehehehehehehe
All that money …. what a waste! Could have bailed out Greece ….. or Ireland (^_^)
I’m off, night guys.
Night Irish. Anyway, I thought Ireland’s finances were all sorted with that discovery of oil off the coast of Cork…..
I’ve got deja-vu.
I’m sure there was another night where both manc teams went out of Europe.
Челси накипи
Tonights just been waaaay tooooo funny.
Man U could have conceded double figures over two legs. For all Bilbao’s qualities they were woeful in front of goal. Imagine what Robin would have done with those chances tonight.
Poor Citeh. Was Mancini undone by a light squad, due to lack ofspending power..??
I’m really gutted for him, no honestly I am.
We all slag off Spanish football, dismissing it as a two-horse race, but the last eight in the Europa League include three Spanish sides and none from England. Plus they have two in the CL to our one.
Back on the subject of the post (kind of) I was speaking to a City fan the other night about how the support has changed up there whether criticism has increased etc. He said that sometimes he has to remind himself he was on the terraces at Rochdale supporting City a few years back before he starts to moan about a performance that saw his side drop to second in the league.
But he also said that the number of tourists has increased and saw it as a necessary evil to comply with FFP. Despite all the money the club has spent he realises that the fans are going to have to pay through the nose if City want to continue spending the kind of money they have on wages and transfers.
I’ve just been watch ruud gullit talking. chelsea are scum
this bloke who’s the chairman of the premier league is a retard. he’s slurring his speech. the fa, uefa and fifa are scum. and chelsea of course
looks like man city will be shopping for a new manager at season’s end too.
Well said Dandan, man city are keen to discipline him when they are winning and firing on all cylinders, but now they are up against it he will be straight back into the team.
@ 26
How united keeping winning the title is beyond me, as you said they are a very average looking team. Surely it comes down to us losing it rather than them winning it! Next season will be different, we will belt all comers off the pitch!
(great comments today btw 26, i always enjoy reading your work so to have so many in one day is a pleasure)
It just occurred to me…
Chelsea are scum.
They get a lot of help from the refs and the fa oz. If we had an investigation like they did in Italy they’d probably be stripped of some of them.
chelsea are scum BTW
bilbao are 30 odd points behind RM but the bbc and sly are saying they are the bollocks just because they knocked out their precious scummy manc team out. chelsea, thew bbc, sly, vermin and the mancs are filthy scum.
the only team that the mancs actually beat this season are an obscure team from Rumania who lost all their games.
I know its late, but has anyone stumped up a post for us tomorrow?
Rasp, I have emailed you and P something a bit earlier – check arsenalnuts..
Cheers Oz, likewise! You’re right about United, a complete mystery. I can only think (and I know this is painful) that it’s down to a truly great manager, who has such an obsession with winning that he can get even his most ordinary squad since he arrived in England to win title after title.
I know the TV bods like to big up the home clubs when they’re in Euro competitions but frankly I do get tired of it. Why not just acknowledge that sides like Bilbao and Sporting (and even sides from lesser known parts of Europe like Ukraine) are decent in the first place, and enjoy the competition between them and the English teams?
Anyway, that’s me done. Sounds like we’re in for another Dutch treat tomorrow.
Night all.
Chelsea are scum.
Morning all,
Nasty thought. Actually make that really really nasty. Maurinho at City.
That would be very grim. 😦
Sorry, bad start to the day.
On a brighter note, we can definately ha ha over the weeks’ European results, as Manc clubs going out does not hamper us so is just plain funny , whereas Chelsea going through definately helps us, leaving us the possibility of watching them getting abolutely thumped by Madrid which will be side splittingly funny.
Happy days ahead.
I have to say that some site members are displaying very erratic time keeping.
Not impressive 🙂
Morning, Micky. 🙂
This comment from LG made me laugh.
After watching that Man utd performance. I am so angry – Wenger has to be the worst manager in the last 3 years in the prem. He has wasted so much money on rubbish Kids. When he buys some experience as he panic’ed in the summer. gives it time to settle in – we look a good team. Yet he has wasted 3 years and massive amount of cash on Rubbish. We know who, people list them all the time on here. Wenger needs to go – so we can bring in a manager of vision and knows how to run a wage bill properly, pay players there real worth and not pay rubbish sums to crap that make Bankers look like paupers.
Micky there’s a brightside
As for LG commenter….that about sums up Wengers critics, thankfully there are a few sane people around!
Hi Micky, 🙂
I almost posted earlier, but I read your Moaniho comment and my fingers would not work! (That sounds oddly wrong somehow!) 🙂
GIE,
The author of that piece is to be pitied. Fancy having to carry that chip around on his shoulder all day?
RA i wouldn’t like to.
I’d have nothing against Kolo picking up a medal but not Nasri, and I kind of agree with others that I’d prefer United to win the league. How quickly would the Sheikhs become disinterested?
Does the coefficient get screwed by Manchesters early exit from Europa? If so how long til we lose 3 auto and 1 qualification CL spots?
The LG idiot who wrote that nonsense 7.52 is the very reason why democracy has problems.
In 10 years time he will be able to vote and his vote carries exactly the same weight as yours and mine. What a depressing thought to take into the day.
Thanks chas ….
How’s the ‘posting of comments problem’ this morning?
chas – can you see if you can leave a comment in the way that you would normally do please without logging in to wordpress?
Morning all.
GIE,
I think it kicks in the season after next but i am not certain.
peaches,
it’s OK over here which should be a good sign as the Internet speed is pretty slow in this region.
I hear you met Big Daddy yesterday 🙂
GIE. No. We are way ahead of the other Leagues.
tp://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/uefarankings/country/index.html
As to Nasri. I would have done the same in his position. He owed nothing to AFC and went where he thought he could further his career and earn a massive amount of dish. Whatever we as fans think about MC, to players it must be a honeypot.
I get this, peaches.
“That email address is associated with an existing WordPress.com account, please log in to use it.”
Different from yesterday!
Hi kelsey – yes I did, and his lovely wife. We spent an hour putting the world to rights. Hope you get to meet him one day 😉
My mum pitched up in your neck of the woods yesterday, I should have sent you some Viennas 🙂
Do you always login to wordpress before you read the blog?
I reckon it’d be 2 or 3 seasons hence, GIE.
And that’s only if the next couple of seasons were as poor as this one.
Loads more site owners left messages of complaint on the forum last night, many threatening to move their blogs. The support guys are usually pretty quick at sorting problems. It seems they are trying to protect people blogging using other peoples email addressess – as if you could be bothered!!!!!! We’ve never had a problem with that so I don’t know how much of a problem it is.
Hi peaches.
No i am automatically logged in, but as I said yesterday every two weeks or so it goes off and i have to log in again.
24 degrees today, your mum will love it.
chas – stupid question I know, but did you ever set up a wordpress account? I remember that when we were on LG and wanted avatars, I think we all did it through wordpress didn’t we?
kelsey – she certainly will. Have you got bowls today?
I had a look at that Tiote race enquiry issue by looking at Arsenal player.
At 68:13 there’s a close-up of Rosicky after he missed that chance from the pass from Walcott (Tiote is lying injured at the time).
There’s a guy in the background who’s pointing and it looks as though he shouts, ‘F*ck off, you black….’ and then the shot moves off him.
This is the caption the Daily Mail put under their photo of Tiote,
“Target: Tiote (right) was allegedly the subject of racial chants”
They don’t even bother to check their facts. What a surprise.
peaches,
I think I set up the blogname just with gravatar because I like the way you can change the picture easily with them.
I don’t remember registering with wordpress, but then again, I don’t remember a lot of things these days. 🙂
I’ve always used gravatar because I wanted to be able to comment on non-wordpress sites.
peaches and Rasp,
How do wordpress make money?
Do you have to pay any fees for hosting etc?
Is it possible to de-register an email address with wordpress?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaNt9-QkiHI
Oh dear chas – are you all alone? I’m back now 😉
We don’t pay WordPress anything to host the site. They have random advertising – google ads – which only some people see – Rasp does, I never have.
chas – can you add a different email address to Gravatar?
peaches,
I’ve just set up that new email address with gravatar and a display name of chas with the same nigella picture, without registering with wordpress.
I’ve just tried to comment using it and it says that email is associated with an existing wordpress account!
This means that registering with gravatar automatically registrs you with wordpress. B*stards. 🙂
Haha, I was on the case already. 🙂
“Van Wolfswinkel. Are we allowed to say that?”
No you’re not !!! Lol
chas – just found this on the forum ……..
Gravatar accounts are considered like WP accounts apparently, so someone with a mail attached to Gravatar will also have to sign in to WP with Gravatar login and passwords, otherwise, it’s not working…
“but then again, I don’t remember a lot of things these days.”
Same here Chas ;-(
Whoops could have saved you the trouble chas 🙂
Pleased to keep you amused, Sharkespeare. 🙂
peaches,
I had a look into deleting an email from wordpress (not possible) and there are some irate users who insist it is against the data protection act not to be allowed to delete!
Peaches,
I cannot get on the site with my ‘normal’ email, without being told I have to log in to WordPress.
I have never registered with WP and, as you know, I do not have a Gravatar.
I can get in using a spare email, but the whole process is a B…… nuisance.
I’ve still got 4 more disposables, peaches, so no probs.
Sorry RA, I’m not sure why you can’t get on normally then when as you say you don’t have an avatar 😦 How do you get on then?
sharkey – how do you get on, because you don’t have an avatar either?
Hey, I quite like my new red and white avatar.
Better than a yellow doily anyday!
New Post …………….
