‘Til the End of the Day: Match Preview

How exciting to welcome the reigning Italian Champions and current leaders of Serie A.

AC Milan arrive fresh from another 4-0 victory, away to Palermo. They sit 3 points ahead of Juventus who have a game in hand. Is this important? I would say Yes, because apart from the over-confidence rising from the first leg, Milan will not want to expend too much energy prior to facing their next League game (home to Lecce). Clutching at straws? Probably …

We were rubbish in Milan.  Apparently it was the worst CL performance in Arsenal history. The Milan pitch was much to blame but so too were the players who just went missing, even Mr Wenger publicly criticizing his team which to my knowledge is a first.

Were we over-confident? Were we tired after a long trip? Did the players have an argument prior to going out onto the San Siro pitch? Were they overawed by the occasion? Were AW’s tactics ignored or did he get it totally wrong? Whatever it was, we were pants and got just desserts for our performance.

However, since then we have beaten two rivals for the CL places and done so in an encouraging manner. We have scored 12 goals in our last two home games and should we keep up the average can advance into the last 8 of the CL. But and this is a huge BUT – we need to keep a clean sheet. With the Famous Five at the back I would bet DanDan’s house that we would do it, but with this current defence the chances are slim. Nonetheless, we have to hope and stay positive.

I expect the atmosphere to be great tonight, few will expect us to go through, and the fans will get the opportunity to see some superb players in the Milan side. The mood from the blogs indicates we are favourites to win but not by much. I tend to go along with this view. Arsenal are a damned good team, capable of beating anyone when on-form (including Barca and RM),

Mr Wenger has stated that he will play a full team which is exciting. We do not play again until Monday evening, so the players can go flat out from the first whistle.

My Team:

Milan will look to play on the break and as such we will have the opportunity to keep possession and play tippy-tappy. If he were fit, I would play Ramsey instead of Rosicky. He is better at beating a player and is more likely to score but the latest news sadly is that he will not make the squad and Arteta is ruled out for a week following the mild concussion he suffered against pool. We can expect Milan to double up on the flanks but both our wingers will do much better playing on the Emirates Bowling Green.

Today’s Gooner: Ray and Dave Davies of the Kinks are confirmed Arsenal fans, both having had season tickets at Highbury. Born in Muswell Hill, they went to Fortismere School and onto Hornsey College. Forming the Kinks in 1963 they had their first Number One in 1964. The Kinks have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Ray was made a CBE in 2005.

The Lads anxiously watching the !971 Cup Final in the Top of the Pops studio

It is rare to see Arsenal in this situation, one where attack is the only policy. It should be fun.

    Big Raddy,
Great read and I absolutely love the caption of the lads watching the Cup Final.
Ox in midfield eh? I like your thinking most very much.

    Great pre-match report BRandy 🙂

You are right: attack is the only policy and it suits us well. Let’s go for it tonight and see where it all ends.

    6-1 to the mighty Arsenal!

Great write up Randy, You Dedicated follower of Fashion. 🙂

Will it be Living on a Thin line., Shangri La or Waterloo Sunset.I hope it’s not a Dead End Street for Theo, but with our Destroyer RvP it should be a Sunny Afternoon (evening)

Arsenal, You Have really Got Me, All of the Day and All of the Night .See My Friends at the Tavern and hopefully GM won’t be late as We Are Tired OF Waiting For You. 😉

Better Things tonight with a Picture Book Ending.:)

    Splendid Post, Raddy, 🙂

TA, I am a bit worried about you.

Why? Well we have never met, but after your exhortations to look into your eyes and then chanting 6 : 1; 6 : 1; I have this image of a fly like visage with multiple eyes (well–6–I suppose) trying to look into 1 of mine.

Very scary! — do say it is not so — you have always sounded such a nice guy, and now it seems you want to suck my brains out. eeeek!

  5. MickyDidIt89's avatar MickyDidIt89 says:

I am in the minority of one as I would play 2nd X1, however, so that I can join in, I will go with the flow.
As for team selection, I think its safe to say that Milan may not come at us all guns blazing, and will sit tight and take the sting out of us. So on this basis, I don’t think Theo will be given more than an inch in which to operate, so not the game for him I feel.

  6. Red Arse's avatar Red Arse says:

    Kelsey, 🙂

What are you on? First it’s TA, then you, muttering dark incantations and strange imprecations to Big Randy!! What is the world — or at least Spain — coming too? 🙂

Great stuff Raddy. After leaving Stepney i also went to Fortismere, the Kinks were before my time, but one of my best mates was another kid who went east to north in the same year, a certain Martin Hayes. Great lad, i used to call him Chin, for obvious reasons. Funny thing was, for an east end boy he was a Man City fan as a kid, but that all changed when he started playing for us.

Its mission impossible tonight, but crazier things have happened.
Gordon Brown became PM, Bernie Ecclestone got a fit bird etc. If we get an early goal and keep it tight at the back you never know. it will be tough but my prediction is 5-0 Arsenal.

Hey! Raddy didn’t forget it’s the Match Day! Good man Raddy! thank you

If I was the manager, I would rest key players, sit them on the bench and let the youngsters have a go. Just as well I am not a manager though 🙂

RA – agree, eye gazing TA and poetic Kelsey, what’s going on today??? Sheer madness! Perhaps we will have a mad result as well? ooooogghhhh – 5:2 ain’t good enough tonight

    Very wise decision, Micky, 🙂

Going with the flow of all out attack is backed up by many adages in the English language.

  13. TotalArsenal's avatar TotalArsenal says:

Wenger on team selection (Micky we might get our wish with the Ox in the middle!!!!!):

“I am tempted,” said the Frenchman. “At the moment, basically I have only two midfielders, [Alex] Song and [Tomas] Rosicky. That means we have to play with four strikers.

“We can play any system you can imagine until tomorrow night. But I will not tell you that now.

“I am tempted [to play Oxlade-Chamberlain down the middle], we will see. I have 24 hours and I have to see if Rosicky is available or not. If he is not available then I will be in a very difficult situation, because I don’t know what I can do then.

“I hope he will make it. He told me yesterday [Sunday] that he will. But the medical staff are not sure.

“I can play six strikers if I want, I have enough. I have Chamakh, Park, Van Persie, Gervinho, Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain. I can take a risk, because I have no choice, basically.”

  16. goonermichael's avatar goonermichael says:

6 strikers? I’d love to see that. It’s basically a no lose situation for us if we keep it injury free. I don’t think they will embarrass us. Although it looked a 4 nil game last time they were very lucky to score 4. 2nd offside, 3rd TV fell over and 4th was a pen that webb would have been proud to give the mancs.

Nice prematch Sir Big of Raddy. It’d be stunning if we were to go through but I think all of us (perhaps with the exception of TA!) know we’ll go out tonight – but assuming we do, let’s do so having fun and with dignity.

Milan are much better than they were under Ancelotti, and have some good younger players now. That said, they’ve chucked big leads away before (Deportivo knocked them out despite losing the first leg 4-1), and you never know. But I think we’ll play such an open game (well, we have to) that Milan will get 1 or 2 goals.

Whatever happens, I damn well want to enjoy the game tonight!

    2. Theo – he has had his below par game against Pool, so now it’s an above par game again – one goal, one assists

    3. RvP – he scores when he wants, one goal, one assist

    4. Ozykop – fearless/nothing to lose, classy performance, one assist

    5. TV – it’s been a while since he scored and he is ready for it – first goal of the game – a total net-ripper!!

    6. Song has a superb game and produces another Songinho assist

    There’s no trick or surprise.

Just follow these instructions, and answer the questions one at a time and as quickly as you can!
Again, as quickly as you can but don’t advance until you’ve done each of them … really.

I hope Gervinho steps it up tonight, he’s overdue a good one.

Good to read your post Big Raddy.

I would like to see us make a totally different line up and system. Here goes.

Chamackh up front with Park and the Ox playing off him for knock downs.

A tight four man midfield that includes Sagna and Benny on the flanks with Song and the Vermaelan anchoring the midfield.

Three at the back would be the Koss because of his pace with Miguel and another pacey defender? To pick up the counter attack.

Give it all guns blazing for the first half then if no injuries occur send on the big guns up front in RVP, Theo and Gervinho.

Even if we get thumped at least it would look like we tried to do something, and it might even work.

    This ones for fun.

A Spud mate at work sits in the Office last night whinging about how Adethewhore should have had a goal that was disallowed for hand ball.

I mentioned to him that he called me an Arsenal whinger every time I tell him that Refs cheat us and now the tables have turned he was now doing the same thing.

He got into a usual Spud Neanderthal rage and started getting really pissed off.

I pointed out to him on how quiet he was the previous week when Bile took a dive. His anger grew stronger and He was now getting slightly abusive in trying to say it was a legitimate penalty.

He couldn’t get to pissed off as I am his Manager but He was spitting as my Son works with me too and He wouldn’t lay off winding him up.

I said that the Ref cheated and He couldn’t believe I called a Ref a cheat as in his eyes they don’t cheat.

My Son played on the fact that The Ref didn’t send off the Keeper, Spud said He didn’t send the Keeper off because Gibbs fouled Bile. my Son said why didn’t he send Gibbs off then?

It went on and on Neil I told them to shut the fuck up.

It was great winding a Spud up but pointless as they are so deluded that you ang your head on the wall with them.

In my opinion they are running scared now. Just over a week ago THEY really believed they would win the League. Suddenly they are shitting themselves thinking we could pass them in the League.

I have layer off Spuds fans for years as they have been insignificant, however after a decent season for them they are talking bollocks.

Come on the Gunners lets take em.

    El Tel,
We have won titles at their gaff and beaten them in many competitions over the years, but for most of this season they have dillusionally considered themselves the top team in London and genuine title contenders.
To end below us I think will probably hurt more than all the previous.
    Shame isn’t it 🙂

El tel, it is great winding them up. I have a spud neighbour whos a realy good guy, the kind of bloke who wouldnt say boo to a goose. He even admitted they were lucky when they turned us over 2-1 earlier this season. I however, am a horrible wretch. When they lose, i spy on his house waiting for him to get back from work, pop out and let him have it. Ime constanly telling him how shit they are as a club and team, that there fans are morons, though i do say hes only half moron. When we overtake them, i plan to sit outside his drum with a horn (in more ways than one), letting him know my feelings on the matter. The only downside is that hes a big bugger, and ime sure will lose it one day. So once we overtake them, will some one please contact my wife and let her know ime in the local A&E.

Apologies Total…it was as much about the extra games as the travelling, but I can see now how it read that way.

Funnily enough, this is one of the first seasons in many where we are best set for a fair crack at CL glory. We are not competing for the title, we’re out of the FACup, and but for the last spate of injuries, we’d have some decent rotational ability thru MF and DEF, with several interchangeable MFs and the same at CB and FB.

Its great that we are ‘having a go’ tonight though.

Whilst I actually enjoyed my Edinburgh overnight last week, I simply could not do it regularly, or travel anywhere else in fact. Perhaps I’ve a similar DNA to Bergkamp, although with me its planes trains and automobiles.

Happy to travel for my annual holiday or a break, but other than that, any travel of more than one hour is shit !

    Only joking non-travelling Sharkey,

I agree with you on having to travel for work a lot. It is so knackering and most of the time it turns out to be unnecessary!

Good point about it being a good season for having a go at the CL! Of course, it is highly unlikely that we get through this evening, but, but, but, not impossible. What have the boys to lose tonight? Expectations are low but the potential in this team, combined with a ‘let’s have a go and attack them from allover the place’ attitude, could spring a surprise. We have scored a lot of goals in our last Emirates games, and only just last year we managed a few high scoring wins in the CL as well. The Ox and the Gerv are totally rested and can really drive the rest of the team tonight. If we can crack Milan early on with a couple of goals, we should have a decent chance to go all the way!

  101. TotalArsenal's avatar TotalArsenal says:

    Wenger:

“What is important is that we believe that we can be in this 5 per cent [zone],” he said. “That’s what is at stake for us – to show that we have the quality to believe we can do it, even if it is only [a] 5 per cent [chance]. But let’s make sure that we do not miss our chance because we did not believe in it.”

“I have a gut feeling they can do it,” he said, “and my job until 7.45 tomorrow night is to convince them they can do it.”

Right, I am off now till tonight. Enjoy the game – COYRRG!!!

Ref was utterly crap. Bought every Milan dive.

But we can really take this performance with us into the league run in.

    Let’s catch those Spuds.

  194. VCC's avatar VCC says:

What a shame. We ran out of steam in the last 30 minutes. That should highlite to Wenger that park and chamahk are not good enough. Such a shame we did not have just one good player to come off the bench. Sooooooooo proud to be a GOONER

Really enjoyable game and we gave it everything.

If one has to be critical we got nothing from the left side of the pitch. Gerv was anonymous and Gibbs couldn’t get forward.

That said, a clean sheet was unexpected and the defence deserved their good fortune.. Koscielny in particular was good.

My MoM was Rosicky. A wonderful energetic performance and another goal.

I thought AW should have subbed Oxo 15 mins earlier and given Chamakh a longer run.

And given we could see how tired the team was perhaps AW could have used all 3 subs to pep things up on 75 mins.

But that is being churlish. Arsenal did us proud tonight.

  204. Irishgunner's avatar Irishgunner says:

BR – All during the game I was missing one player, not Arteta, not Wilshere, not Ramsey, but Santos, if we had him bombing down the left like Sagna was down the right we would have had them I’d say – we did have them, just ran out of steam.

Rosicky was outstanding – not that I’m surprised 😉

  205. dandan's avatar dandan says:

Very proud of the effort put in tonight.

Dandan – Song worked hard but certainly wasn’t at his most disciplined and sensible, but he still put in a good shift though, and had some wonderful moments. Overall he could have done a bit better.

Its astonishing that the game is over because RVP does not score one of the easiest chances he’s seen all season. At that point I really did not believe that was likely to be our last serious chance. I’ll forgive him.

So many amazing performances all over the park tonight…but the standout has to be the Ox. What a phenomenal talent that kid is.

Gibbs is starting to make me have a rethink. Well played Kieran…

Overall I think it was a copmbination of tiredness and not being on someone like a Benayoun or Coquelin when others started to tire or got injured. Don;t let Rasp hear…but even a small tubby Russian might have just been the ticket tonight!!!

Overall..I’m actually as pleased as punch after that showing

Did anyone notice what looked like puke down the CL sign behind the Arsenal dugout? I wondered whether that was young Ozyakup, would have been a massive game to deyboo in, and I think he would have been the best replacement for Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Anyway had a more worrying thought.

How much will that result affect the team? Wenger had a job picking players off the floor after losing in San Siro but I think he’ll have a bigger job tonight. They left it all on the pitch tonight, and whilst they won they didn’t get the result their effort deserved. I hope they can take a lot of positives.

Think you’re being a bit hard on Park and Cham.
What we really needed was a midfielder to come on to help us get and keep possession, but the usual plague of injuries scuppered us on that front.

How about TR7 scoring again? If he hadn’t scored that one against the Spudders I think he’d have fluffed his goal tonight. He would have been so anxious he would have blasted the shot and missed. Instead he had the composure to pass it into the net. I reckon he’ll get 4 or 5 more before the end of the season now.

Its an unfortunate season for us.

Our best player gone. His replacement was out for the season.

We lose all fullback at the same time, and even the replacement suffered an injury.

We were left with only two midfielders and the replacement, the Ox, was sick before the game, even Rosicky was doubtful to start.

even if we finish sixth in the premiership will be an amazing achievement for Arsene..

  242. Rob Lucci's avatar Rob Lucci says:

Its amazing that we didnt getting ran out in the middle of the park despite playing with only two midfielders.

My first reaction after the game was pure heartbreak and devastation especially after we again overcame terrible refereeing. After a long walk home I had a smile that reached my eyes and my heart was brimming with pride and joy. Nights like these remind me why I love and support The Arsenal and why no other club can do it for me despite the emotional rollercoaster. The team did themselves proud tonight and when the pain wears off they can lift their heads up and realise that they did an amazing job. They have confirmed to us, themselves and the wider world that they are much better than that terrible first leg performance. Long live Arsenal and may all fans fully appreciate our wonderful team and manager.

I hope that Theo, Song and The Ox are ok because it will be terrible for us to have lost the tie AND have more injuries on top of that. I also wish for a massive humbling defeat to AC Milan in the next round because they have been really irritating this tie. The antics with their pitch, the play acting, arrogance etc were truly infuriating and but for away goal we could have knocked them out.

Anyway I will be cheering on Everton this weekend and pulling on my top and loudly supporting the team on Monday. COYRRRs and FOYS!

  244. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL FOOTBALL!

I’ve only glanced at one or two of the post-match comments here but have already seen pride mentioned more than once. And that is so right. The result was almost irrelevant tonight – the players and the fans delivered a truly immense performance tonight, one that gives us back our pride. I know we lost the tie but being there tonight was just epic, it was one of the great, great European nights. We blew away Italy’s finest, a side of top quality and one that is on the way up.

There is simply nothing to criticise in terms of the players’ performances, they all did everything they could and in doing so showed so much talent and strength of character. And after all, what do the British love more than glorious defeat?!

But there are lessons to draw as well. First, we simply do not have enough attacking quality in the squad. We know it and the manager knows it, and it needs to be corrected. Park and Chamakh didn’t hide when they came on, they did what they could, but we need better than they can offer. It’s generally true, but it was so clear tonight, when we played with such intensity in the first half, that we needed more on the bench.

Second, with this intensity, positivity and force of will, both on the pitch and in the stands, we can achieve a lot.

    Third, I bloody love Arsenal!

OK, I’m going to go back and read all the other comments now.

  245. Amazing, amazing night at the Emirates. I am so proud of the team and the supporters, they worked their socks off and we sang our hearts out. Milan are a bunch of cheating, diving scumbags and the referee bought nearly every one of their acts. I hope they get humiliated in the next round.

At half-time we were in heaven but the team tired too quickly in the second half, maybe half-time came 10 minutes too soon for us.

I hope we can get to third place because this team really deserve it for the guts they have shown and the joy they have given us in the last 10 days alone.

  246. London Gunner's avatar London Gunner says:

Thanks RL. I must comment and run I’m afraid. I truly do hope there is no resulting negativity from this and people just enjoy our team and football.

And peaches, it was great to see you, Rasp, chas, Chary, evonne, 7am Tim and others tonight – Tim’s blog is of the highest quality, so to meet the man behind the blog while he’s on a sojourn this way was excellent.

As Rob Lucci observed, excellent tactics from the Prof tonight. First in selling Milan a dummy in the days before, with his suggestion of starting with four strikers and then in starting with the Ox in central midfield. I didn’t get it at first, but seeing him bursting through, past a slack jawed van Bommel, showed me the error of my ways. Great idea, that and Rosicky’s magnificent performance, kept Milan off balance.

I just loved so many of the performances tonight: Koscielny was awesome, and Vermaelen, Song, Szczesny, Walcott and Sagna all excellent.

  249. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

And yes, the referee was staggeringly bad tonight. Usually, I find the CL a relief from the standard dross refereeing we get in the PL, but the game was way beyond Slovenia’s Damir Skomina. We’re just lucky it didn’t impact the result.

  250. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gooner In Exile says:

Some consolation for going out of the CL: no demanding fixtures in the days before Man City home, Chelsea home and Stoke away (plus QPR away). I’d have loved still to be in the CL but having that additional recovery time before our three most demanding remaining PL games could turn out to be very important for us.

  256. Rob Lucci's avatar Rob Lucci says:

26, agree with you about the demanding fixtures. Like it or not, finishing in the CL spot is more important to us right now.

I’ve said it before, and I say it again, we miss Rosicky drives for 3 season in a row. Most people think we resort to tippy tappy football because of Fabregas. Its not. Its because we never replace Rosicky.

That’s why I have a very high hope for Abou Diaby, hopefully he can recover from his injury nightmare as soon as possible and we might have a direct replacement for Rosicky..

I am sure this will spur on the team.

With regards to the OX, it was noted in commentary he wasn’t moving well straight from the start of the second half, but IMO AW left him on as long as possible, purely as he thought his other options on the bench wouldn’t offer so much.

Great night regardless of the ref and we showed that the defeat in Milan was a freak, Milan just had one of those days were they excelled.

Some good points about the left side and certinly Santos would have made the difference.
What cost us was lack of midfield cover as Song, so underastandably, tired.
Then there is the Ox. How we suffered once he received a knock. Now that is very high praise for an eighteen year old.

  261. Oz gunner's avatar Oz gunner says:

Just thinking about the amount of injuries we are still suffering, now mounting up in the midfielders (pre game or on the bench we could have done with at least two of these):

    Arteta
    Ramsey
    Wilshere
    Diaby
    Benayoun
    Santos

Slim as well as being funny I thought he was on the button with most analysis. Even handed maybe even a little too pro Arsenal for sky, he was whingeing at the Milan histrionics, called Mexes’s block on TV5 before the replay, “if I know Mexes I can tell you what happened there”, and it did.

Very very good, horrible opponent but you don’t stay that long at the top of football with his limited ability without being a very good reader of the game, and he has clearly listened and learned from his manager and coaches.

As I was listening I began to ask myself “shouldn’t he be coaching”. There is no one better on Sky now.

Good question on the radio yesterday – during the last 7 seasons Arsenal won nothing. At the same time Chelsea won 7 trophies. Which club in your opinion is doing better? Would you rather be a Chelsea or an Arsenal supporter? Try not to be biased 🙂

  271. Gööner In Exile's avatar Gooner In Exile says:

The best bit of Neville’s commentary was salivating over an Oxlade-Chamberlain pass when he half volleyed a high ball to Gervinhos feet. His words were “Ooaah”.

  274. I think the players should all be whisked off to a warm beach somewhere for a few days and given videos of the spud game from 39 minutes onwards and last nights first half to watch.

I hope Arsene and everyone that knows them keeps telling them how amazing they were last night.

A really good atmosphere last night and we came so close to achieving the ‘impossible’. I am so proud of the lads for their performance last night and they gave their all and we just couldn’t quite get over the line.

I noticed a lot more ‘fans’ stayed behind last night to applaud the team off the pitch and let them know we appreciated their efforts. That is how it should always be in my opinion and far too many sneak away early.

I thought the ref was appalling last night and the game was far too big for him. He fell for every MIlan trick in the book over and over again and was far too card happy early on.

Onwards and upwards and if we can keep up peformances like that one last night, we will get third, let alone fourth.
