Arsenal v Sunderland – Hillsborough 1973

Written by dandan

On a cold sleety, rainy, snowy sort of day in April 1973 , we in the much-travelled brown ford escort, ribbons proudly flapping, made our way to Sheffield.  Its FA cup semi final day, a horrible gut wrenching, nervous day this, at least if you lost in a final, you had your day at Wembley.

But Hillsborough was different a grotty mud heap of a ground, chosen because of its size, 55,000 would be there today, and its location midway between our opponents, 2nd Division Sunderland and us, meant a lousy, what might have been, ride home for the losers.

Of course we knew we were second in the first division, plus we had won the semi final in the previous two years hadn’t we.  There was no way we would face that awful ride home, our third final in a row was a certainty.

Bad enough we had lost the final to Leeds in a bad-tempered game the previous year. Ahh but the year before that had seen Frank lift the cup just 5 days after winning the league at the lane, to do the double. No, we were fine, 2nd division Sunderland would be a doddle. We were different class.

A  large greasy spoon breakfast in an A1 transport café on the way up saw us arrive, happy and confident. Having pushed our way into the ground, that would years later become famous world-wide for the disaster that crushed and killed so many Liverpool supporters and changed the English game for ever.. We climbed the endless stairs emerging high up on that enormous banking and looked down on the muddy patch, where Pete Storey had equalised from the penalty spot in the final minute two years previously. History, that too, was on our side, we had form here.

Well the truth is we never really got into another ill-tempered game; Alan Ball had one of his ineffectual days as his normally immaculate lay offs failed more often than not to find their target. Bob Wilson having hurt himself early on, got in a mix up with Geoff Blockley and somehow they allowed Halom to knock the ball into the empty net.  Goalkeeping cock-ups you see are not just a recent trait of ours. Geordie as ever ran tirelessly, until in the second half  Tueart put Hughes in and it was 2 – 0.

Big Raddy came on for Blockley and we pushed forward, Charlie scored and hope grew, but the football was as dismal as the rain soaked afternoon skies and when the final whistle came, justice had been done, Sunderland the more adventurous side had deservedly won and would go on to lift the cup.

It was still sleeting on and off  as we started for home causing chaos on the roads around the ground .  So changing direction, we headed for the M6 Via the peak district and the cat and fiddle. Bad, bad move, the more we climbed the more it snowed,  eventually we were pushing the car more than driving it. Eventually arriving home gone midnight, shattered after without doubt the worst experience of my football life, far worse than all our Wembley horrors.

So for all of you going on Saturday, remember we owe them a big one and cheer your heads of for all us older supporters, who suffered that day.

    dandan,
Love it. We still owe them for the pain they inflicted on us 38 years ago. Out of the window with “time is a great healer” theory!

  2. mickydidit89's avatar mickydidit89 says:

I am very pleased you are talking about the Sunderland game, as we have all been discussing the return with Barca, and that makes me very nervous.

  3. Harry's avatar Harry says:

Nice bit of Nostaglia there DanDan, goes to show that Arsenal have alwways had a knack of making the easy hard?

So did you have the furry dice in your Ford escort? bet the girls loved u?

Its a massive game tomorrow, win, the pressure on United increases tenfold, lose or draw and they will be more relaxed against Liverpool…..

Will be interesting to see what wenger goes with, personally I would use the following tomorrow@

    Chez

    Sags JD Koz Gibbs

    Nasri Diaby Jack

    Arshavin Nik Clichy

Subs@ Cham, Aaron, Rosicky, Eboue, Denilson, Squid and Al.

We need pace to our team and with Walcott out, clichy will add that…..I have made several comments on last post about this……..

  4. Harry's avatar Harry says:

Give Aaron about 30mins tomorrow and see how he goes, I have 100% belief he will be fine and ready for us if needed else where……

Micky dont be nervous about Tuesday, but your right lets concentrate on the Mackams…..

  5. mickydidit89's avatar mickydidit89 says:

    Harry,
I do like your laterally thought out teams!

  6. mickydidit89's avatar mickydidit89 says:

    Harry,
No, I’m nervous about tomorrow. Scares me when we the supporters are talking about tuesday. I only hope the players are not. The three points tomorrow are massive, as we have the league in our control.

  7. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

Excellent stuff DD, I was 4 years old in 1973, so rely on others’ memories to know about what came before “my” Arsenal time, and stories like yours are fantasically evocative.

And as Micky says, Sunderland is our big upcoming game, not Barca. It’s top versus bottom in terms of the form league (last 6 league games: us 16 points, Sunderland 4 points with the last 4 games all being defeats) but that’s one reason why we should be worried. Sunderland have plenty going for them. eg Gyan up front. And our injury situation is becoming a real concern. I’m hoping to see Ramsey play tomorrow, and if Song doesn’t make the team in Catalonia, perhaps Ramsey will be a candidate ahead of Denilson and Diaby.

  8. mickydidit89's avatar mickydidit89 says:

Off to be busy elsewhere for a while.

  9. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

Very interesting suggestion for a line-up Harry, esp the Clichy plus Gibbs left side, that would also enable Bendtner to play up front. A nicely balanced team. Personally, I’d prefer to see Ramsey ahead of Diaby but you’re probably right to predict that Huggy Bear will get the nod.

  10. dats's avatar dats says:

I was there that day. Oh, to think we let McLintock go and signed Jeff Blockley! I can remember nothing about the journey home. It seems to have been totally erased from my memory.

  11. terry's avatar terry says:

i like your team selection harry but i would rather have gibbs as a left winger and clichy as a leftback… this selction makes our team look very balances nd strong and also when nasri nd arshavin play on the left wing they hardly cross the ball coz both r right footed players and both like to cut in…. hence nikki b and chamak are not used to their full potential

  12. Harry's avatar Harry says:

26m, believe me I want ramsey back in our team pronto, but feel with Sunderlands physical presence, let diaby take the sting and then bring our welsh wizard on…

Give him 30mins or so and then if needed he can play on Tuesday, would have no hesitation…..(Sorry on about tuesday again)……

One of my biggest gripes with our Warlord Wenger, is that at times his teams lack balance, which oftens results in a lack of pace both sides…ie for example one side we will have say Arshavin and the other would be diaby, you need the opposing flank to follow the break and be there, Clichy would do that, its often the tactical rabbits (ones pluck out of the hat) that reap rewards, look at Flamini at LB in 2005-06.

We need pace out wide to compliment our passing and unnerve teams, they worry when they see Walcott, arshavin coming at them…..

When we dont have people breaking at pace, we our starving one of own outlets, which is daft…….

Let Nasri and Jack weave away, diaby can break up play and give the ball (hopefully) to the others or on occasions he will bulldoze through and force the issue if the passes arent getting through…..

I often defend diaby to fans who cannot see what he brings to the team, he has the ability to dominate games with his power and tenacity, he can turn and leave players in his wake, just needs to learn when a pass is more productive……..

B52 will be buzzing tomorrow after his hat trick against the Mighty O’s, ok they werent mighty, but it will do his confidence a boost (was it needed?) you know what I mean…Want to see him really get at Sunderland tomorrow, needs a little more aggression for me, show some power, knock players aside abit more rather than try show pony dribbling……

  13. Harry's avatar Harry says:

Terry, either combo works for me, but the reason for clichy forward more, is that his running is more direct and he is stronger physically to force through gaps…

Gibbs will still get forward for crossing etc… Clichy would then drop in, also i would say Clichy is slightly quicker to return to support than Gibbs would be..

Gibbs used to the left winger as we know, so happy either way, I just want a balanced team, it helps our play and compliments our style as mentioned earlier.

When we have struggled in games, i always feel it is the lack of balance that hinders us, disjointed team doesnt bode well for quick short interplay passing…..

  14. chas's avatar chas says:

Dandan, you brought back memories for me of standing on that huge Kop end at Hillsborough. Steep and scary with everyone urinating where they stood because it was so difficult to get to the toilets.

God how I hate losing in semi-finals. Mind you, I hate losing any game.

Do they still make brown cars?

  15. chas's avatar chas says:

btw, I think my Hillsborough trip was 1980 v Liverpool which ended 0-0 and took 3 more games to separate us!

  16. goonermichael's avatar goonermichael says:

I’ve read so much rubbish about rednose and the mancs in the past 2 days. I was unfortunate enough to find a copy of the independent on the tube and read that article that evonne posted yesterday what a load of shit. What really worries me about tomorrow is picking up more injuries. Bruce will do anything for his fellow alcoholc.

  17. Harry's avatar Harry says:

Chas, lol, was just about to highlight that game, it was my first away trip, semi finals of FACup….Them games v liverpool were amazing…..
I also went to the match at Villa park, 1-1, goal in fist 15 secs equalised by a goal by them in last 15secs!!
We won the last replay 1-0, i think it was at Highfield road…..them were great days…

And I still love my Arsenal today as strong if not more than then……

  18. Evonne's avatar Evonne says:

DanDan, thanks for the great story, jeez it must have been heart breaking….I am always greatful to the away fans, I couldn’t do it.

  19. Morning all

Thanks for a great nostalgic post dandan, you’ve dusted off your quill I feel 😉

Evonne – would you like me to tell you how to have an avatar, you could have Super Nic!!!!! 😀

Harry – how good that the combo of Clichy and Gibbs happened on Wednesday night after we’d just been talking about it. I agree with all you’ve said about using the two giving the left balance and that they cover for each other when either one is pushed forward. Added to that Clichy scored!!!

  20. chas's avatar chas says:

Talking of away trips, I saw this yesterday and it made me laugh. There’s always someone who’s had a worse experience than you!

  22. chas's avatar chas says:

Thanks for the prediction, Nathaniel. Hope you’re right. 🙂

I doubt Dandan has seriously harboured a grudge for 38 years, but was simply using tomorrow’s game as a way of reliving old memories.

  24. Rasp's avatar Rasp says:

Great read dandan. Surprisingly there are very few pictures of that encounter, but I was pleased to find one of gentleman Bob.

    Welcome Nathaniel,
Thanks for your comment. The article wasn’t anti-Sunderland, but as you can appreciate this is an Arsenal blog and we need to lift our spirits after last weekend as we’re still in with a good chance to win the league and the small matter of Barcelona coming up on tuesday. Personally, I wish Sunderland well in all the rest of their games except tomorrow. It would be great if you could finish above totnum.

  25. dandan's avatar dandan says:

Morning all. Thanks for the comments, Nathan its the Alzheimer’s mate I cant remember recent stuff, this seems like yesterday 🙂

  26. Hello all, thanks for the nostalgic trip back into the ‘70s Dandan – for some reason I feel the need to put Top Trumps cards between the spokes of my Tomahawk bike.
I’m going tomorrow and as it is an important game, made more so by the Mank scums slip up on Tuesday, all the pressure is on us to grab the 3points and make the soon-to-get-a-touchline- ban Lord Fergie’s bad week get worse.
Who else is up for a pre match nerve settler(or 3)?

  27. dandan's avatar dandan says:

Harry That was a special escort, 1600 GT with beefed up valves and pots, flared arches and big wheels. Bit of a flying machine,4 of us did thousands of miles in the three years 71/2/3 following the Arsenal. My passengers said it had to be brown inside as well the way I drove. 🙂

  28. Hi chary – I’m up for a meeting up at The Tavern 🙂 GoonerinExile will be joining us too.

  29. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

Fergie now sulking with MUTV because they didn’t tell him to shut up when he was calling the referee a cheat – you couldn’t make this stuff up. Grow up and take responsibility for your own acts, you deluded pisshead.

  30. chas's avatar chas says:

I’ll probably be in the Tavern after 1pm with my brothers and my dad’s 85 year old mate (who we still take to every home game).

    …brown inside, hahaha.

  31. dandan's avatar dandan says:

I have long thought that Gibbs should play on the left in front of Clichy, his pace and crossing ability would be a godsend at times. Especially when we have RVP and Bendy or Chamak on the pitch at the same time. Chamy for all his reluctance to shoot sure can head a ball

  32. LB's avatar London says:

    Hi Dandan

Good post, I think? I had just about forgotten that one, although, the one thing I definitely had forgotten was the opposition, such was the nightmare caused by Blockley; Sunderland seemed almost irrelevant. It reminded me how as a very young boy I used to travel all over the country on my own. There is no way I would let my children do that together let alone on their own.

  33. Hi dandan – we’d better start a petition then and present it to Arsene 🙂

chas – we’ll be there about 2ish. I’m a girl and look a bit like your avatar it has been said 😳 short hair though – too much information …….

  34. LB's avatar London says:

I understand the general concern about Chamakh but I thought his body language looked better on Wednesday. I got the impression that the worry of the big move and the mistaken belief that he has to live up to a certain reputation was gone. I reckon he now realises that very little is expected of him and that he can relax and get back to the enjoyment of just playing his game. How about that for a lot of guess work?

  35. LB's avatar London says:

“and my dad’s 85 year old mate (who we still take to every home game).”

    Respect to you Chas.

  36. Chas/Peachy/Harry – I hope to be there around 1.45 (+/- 10 minutes); no Chary major and minor so I can let rip with the peroni’s.
    Good times.

London ours was a much nicer world I think. Many people didn’t have a phone at home, yet our parents worried less than todays Mobile generation when we were out.

It’s still our world dandan. You talk like we’re all dead 🙂 Wish I didn’t have to work on saturdays. Just turned down a ticket for tomorrow.

  39. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

Agree with London re Chamakh, I think he’s showing signs of some improvement, having been going through a big dip in form since December. The excellent start to his Arsenal career made us all think there would be no adjustment period but the reality of a move to a different country and a more competitive league and squad seems to have caught up with him in recent months. Stick with him, I think he’ll come good again and show he’s a valuable member of the squad.

  40. Harry's avatar Harry says:

Sounds like a quality Motor DanDan, a right chick puller….Probably blasting a bit of Earth wind and fire out lol……..

Chary, will have little h in tow, but a beer and chat with the good people of AA land is on the cards…..Peaches has my mobile will call when close in…..

You see now peaches? I talked much sense before the game!!!! Oh i wish i had wengers mobile number!! sometimes…..He just needs a little nudge now and then……

So looking forward to tomorrow, ramsey been back will help the atmosphere……Gotta to be up for this, no limp wristed supporters tomorrow…….

    come on the arse!!

  41. Red Arse's avatar Red Arse says:

    Nice one Dandan, 🙂

I think memories like yours should be collected and kept for posterity.

Not wanting to sound morbid, but in 50 years time this era, let alone the 70’s, will have faded like a sepia photograph and it would be invaluable for future Gooners to look back on and have first hand memories to read.

I agree with 26, who agreed with London. 🙂 Chammy will come good! 🙂

  42. RockyLives's avatar RockyLives says:

Great, great post Dandan. I had the misfortune of listening to that one on the radio, so at least I didn’t have to make the trek there and back.

    micky
Totally agree that we should be focussing on tomorrow and not on Barca. And dandan’s post has proved to be a healthy corrective in that case.

    chas
Do they still make brown cars? 🙂
And having met Peaches for the first time on Wednesday I can confirm that your avatar is a good guide…

  43. RockyLives's avatar RockyLives says:

I agree with Redders, who agreed with 26, who agreed with London… the Chamster will come good.
I thought he could have done a bit more to pull the defenders out of position against the Os, but who knows, he might have been under orders to stay very central.

  44. So Sir Alcopop is going to contest his disrepute charge. The pillock.

I hope the FA grow a pair and make an exmaple of him and add to the ban they should give him anyway on the basis of “frivolous appealling”.

A touchline ban will effect the manks because without Fergie on the touchline to hound the officials into giving everything the manks way we might actually get the odd fair decison when we play there next Saturday.
Plus with no Fergie there, if the manks are not winning then “Fergie time” will not come to the rescue, i.e. 2 minutes extra time if the manks are winning, 8 minutes if they are not.

  45. Gooner in Exile's avatar Gooner in Exile says:

Top post DanDan, so much in football has changed today, all seaters, grass on the pitch etc etc. One thing that has never died is the passion (thank goodness).

As peaches said I’ll be joining you all for a pre match bevvy (cheers peaches 😀 )

I like Gibbs ahead of Clichy at the end of the day he started as a centre midfielder alongside Jack, so he should be good going forward.

Also the added beauty of being interchangeable if Clichy overlaps Gibbs can drop in and do the job without Clichy having to worry about sprinting past AA23 to get back in position.

  46. Erik the Red's avatar Big Raddy says:

DanDan, Really enjoyed the post, it felt like I was with you.

I heard the game on the radio and was devastated by the result, as you say, semi-Final defeats were much worse.

I wrote yesterday of the need for a left winger, and the suggestions of Gibbs/Clichy on the left endorse that suggestion. I cannot see AW agreeing; he tried the Clichy / Traore combo which didn’t work, and he only uses the Clich/Gibbs late in the game when he is looking for security (Arshavin being a poor defender)

  47. Look forward to the pre match relaxer at the Tavern GiE – I only hope I’m reasonably lucid by the time you get there.

  48. gunnern5's avatar gunnern5 says:

A little bit of trivia – March 9th, 1935 almost 76 years ago to the day Arsenal at home to Sunderland score 0-0 watched by the biggest crowd in our history at Highbury — 73,295.
Can you imagine how difficult it must have been just getting to the ground, the tubes must have been bursting at the seams. Then imagine being in the ground with that many people, boggles my mind.

Gee even I’m to young to have seen that particular game. Now that’s got me thinking – I’ll have to do some research and figure out the largest crowd that I was amongst at Highbury.

  49. Red Arse's avatar Red Arse says:

A belated hi to you Rocky, 🙂

I am really pleased that you agreed with me agreeing with 26 who had agreed with London.

If only the world could learn to adopt our policy of equanimity ….. there might still be a world in 50 years time! 🙂

  50. Gooner in Exile's avatar Gooner in Exile says:

GunnerN5 one can only assume there was no need for tubes and that most people would have walked to the ground from their homes.

Chary inorder to make sure I’m not playing catch up I will get a cab from Liv St to the Tavern and not have to wait for buses.

  51. Afternoon RedA – and a fine afteernoon it is here in the Hmoe Counties, lots of blue sky etc..
Raddders – when are you next over? Pity one of your previous visits was snow curtailed.

  52. gunnern5's avatar gunnern5 says:

    GIE:

Believe me the tubes were the main artery to the ground. My family lived on the Caledonian road for a while and even in the 40’s I can remember the crowds were so dense in the tunnels inside the Arsenal station that at times my feet would not touch the ground.

  53. Red Arse's avatar Red Arse says:

    GN5.

Those were the days when standing was permitted. Imagine how many the Emirates could hold if standing were allowed? Idle speculation, I know but how does this grab you.

60,000 capacity, less seats in boxes, (say) 10,000 = 50,000 Ordinary seats.

    50,000 seats * 3 (standing?) = 150,000 + 10,000 (box seats) = 160,000 capacity. Wow!

This calculation is pure conjecture, but is probably not far out.

  54. I’m a bit of a lightweight drinking wise GiE, so you’ll probably catch up quite easily.
I reckon I’ll get there 1.30 at the earliest, but I’ll be at the nmercy of the picaddilly line(and the M40).

  55. Red Arse's avatar Red Arse says:

    Hi CharyB, 🙂

Because you have been proselytising Peroni beer, which I understand is a premium product, I asked my Italian friend to get me a bottle to try.

He laughed and said the British (and Americans) could sometimes be perverse in their alcoholic tastes.
Apparently Peroni is seen as a cheap and somewhat bucolic beverage in Italy and not an expensive upmarket drink.

I actually liked it and thought it tasted rather like the Spanish Saint Miguel beer.

I have kept the other 4 to drink your health from my sofa during the pre-match. 🙂

  56. Yeah, I see what you mean RedA – it’s like everyone here thinks a Mercedes is the height of aspirational motoring, whereas in Germany they are seen as cab drivers cars.
It is more expensive in the UK than, say, Becks or (ugh) Holsten along with its odious Spud connections.
It’s the 2nd smoothest lager I’ve ever drunk, the smoothest is, of course, Rignes, that fine Norwegian lager, brewed with pure fjord water(or so the admen tell me)

  57. gunnern5's avatar gunnern5 says:

I’ll take a glass of The Macallan or fine red wine over a glass of “burpy beer” any day.

  58. This is beginning to look like a goonerholic comments section !

Good to see Rambo will be back tomorrow – I look forward to cheering/singing extra loud for him. Let’s hope his return to us is a darn sight more substantial than Eddy’s turned out to be.

  59. Gooner in Exile's avatar Gooner in Exile says:

I will be honest I couldn’t get a bottle of Peroni in our hotel in Italy and now thinking back the waitress did smirk when I asked for it so perhaps you are right RedA. We did have a rather marvellous hoppy local brew in it’s place which hit the spot.

To be honest lager is not for me, much rather a good pint of bitter, but if the AA way is to go with pre match Peroni I wouldn’t want to break tradition.

  60. We’re a broad church of drinkers here at AA GiE, I don’t think you’ll cause any waves by downing a bitter – I think it’s mainly me, Peachy and Raspers who go for the Peroni’s.

  61. Red Arse's avatar Red Arse says:

    CharyB,

That Peroni was the first alchol to touch my lips since early Jan. Could not even touch the Dom Perignon gift I received at Xmas.

Looking forward to that in a month or so, all being well! 🙂

I have a reasonably eclectic taste where drinking is concerned, but a sassy Sauvignon blanc, or a meltingly clean, smooth Chardonnay while listening to music does it for me.

Just been listening to the late, great Brook Benton singing ballsy ballads with that deep smoky voice. Such joy! 🙂

  62. chas's avatar chas says:

Hope to see you all tomorrow including Nigella. 🙂
We tend to leave the Tavern fairly early, 2.15 or thereabouts to give the old boy time to walk to the ground in leisurely fashion, so it may be only briefly.

  63. Carlito11's avatar Carlito11 says:

Afternoon all- hectic at w#$k at the moment but hey- it’s FRIDAY!! Dandan- thanks for the evocative recollections. One of my favourite things about this site is the depth of experience and reminiscences written by you and others on the site.
GiE- I am also an ale man during the day but love wine and Whisky too. At the Tavern the nearest thing to a bitter or Ale is a Guiness. What time are you good folk planning on being there? Chary- have you tried a polish lager called Lech? My wife being Italian I can confirm that Peroni is thought of in Italy the way we think of Fosters/ Carling! God this is a rambling comment! 😮

  64. Erik the Red's avatar Big Raddy says:

Peroni is also a premium beer over here and a bottle costs €4 in the supermarkets, whereas a bottle of Tuborg costs about €1, and to me is as good.

I have no preferences for alcohol and will give anything a go, apart from Babycham and alcopops.

Though the perfect evening would be a:

    Champagne starter followed by a
NZ Sauvignon Blanc Aperitif then an
Italian Amarone or a full bodied French Bourdeaux
    A Muscadet. A pause then a
    Single malt

And a couple of cold Tuborgs to finish

    Then a long sleep

  74. Carlito11's avatar Carlito11 says:

GiE you can listen to it here: http://arcticmonkeys.com/ They’ve changed it up again- guess Alex Turner is a restless songwriter and needs to keep it moving in different directions

  75. Carlito11's avatar Carlito11 says:

I hope the players haven’t forgotten how hard the game at Sunderland was- that weird and fortunate goal from Cesc giving us an early lead but we never looked comfortable and they played us of the park at times… As long as the lads remember that and play with intensity we should be fine. Problem is intensity is a hard thing to acheive with one eye on Tuesday as I think many on here have already said. On a positive note the Mackems haven’t been in good form- hope this isn’t the game they refind it!

  76. Evonne's avatar Evonne says:

How about Adele? Great voice, shame about her origins http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYEDA3JcQqw

ADO Den Haag v Feyenoord February 20, 2011

In the dying minutes of the game Ahmed Ammi, the ADO Den Haag defender, looked certain to be sent off after he crashed elbow-first into Ryo Miyaichi, on loan at Feyenoord from Arsenal. However, the referee awarded the Moroccan only a yellow card and also dished out a booking to the Feyenoord player who confronted him.

  78. RedA – Peroni always reminds me of match days so it has a kind of significance for me too.
Radders – hope to see you over here before the season is out – I’m hoping for Blackburn & Villa as my last 2 matches.
See all you guys at the Tavern tomorrow – COYRRG !

  79. While we’re on music, time to remind you all about this lot

Ok, I’m not missing out while on the music subject: my fave of 2010 was John Grant. Check him here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0l5vyj0SXY&feature=youtube_gdata_player. Not sure that it’ll be well received by the metal crowd …..

  81. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

And peaches, I must have missed you telling us about that lot before, but am liking it. Gracias.

  82. chas's avatar chas says:

Great photos, the Arsenal ones are all the way through with a few others in between.

  83. 26may – John Grant – definitely someone to chuckle along with in the car or on the train, great voice though.

Peggy Sue – the dark one is mine, have to plug them every so often 😉

chary – where did that loud music go

  84. 26may1989's avatar 26may1989 says:

Peaches, I do find JG funny in a dark, sarcastic sort of way but you’re right, cheery he ain’t. Absolutely beautiful live.

And well done to your better half!

I have arisen a worried Micky and it concerns not only AW’s team selection, but also our built in complacency. Nasri central or bust.

I’m not sure we are complacent Micky, we are awaiting BR pre match to light the fire and therefore have decided to avert our minds with other things, music and alcohol!

Will be a tough game today, they have a good spirit and a scattering of quality talent throughout the side.

  93. mickydidit89's avatar mickydidit89 says:

    GiE,
I meant team complacency rather than blogger. Sorry.
I noted with horror the absence of The Dry Martini!

  94. mickydidit89's avatar mickydidit89 says:

Rude, Good Morning GiE. Are you going today?

  95. Rasp's avatar Rasp says:

    Check out Andy McKee

  96. Rasp's avatar Rasp says:

    Morning all,

I promise to talk only about football from now on, but the music is a welcome distraction to my defcon status…..

  97. Evonne's avatar Evonne says:

Chas – thanks for the photos, they are good! Kolo looks slim on them, doesn’t he 🙂

  98. Rasp's avatar Rasp says:

    Morning Evonne,

Time for our Striking Viking to show what he can do against Premiership opposition today don’t you think. If Nik really wants to send out a warning shot to Barca, a couple more goals today just might make them think.

  99. Gooner in Exile's avatar Gooner in Exile says:

I am indeed Micky (courtesy of a Peaches spare….the Os early bird report was worth it 😀 )

Will be good to welcome Ramsey back.

Judging by players tweetsit seems minds are focussed

  100. Erik the Red's avatar Big Raddy says:

Firstly thank you all for the music. A wonderful start to the day.

In particular to 26. John Grant was new to me – what a fine song and singer.

Tommy E. I have known of for may years and have spent many a frustrating evening trying to figure out just how to move my fingers with such dexterity and speed. He is astonishing and so humble.

Of course, Andy McKee I know from YouTube, astonishing! —– is he playing a Taylor?

And Peggy Sue from Peaches – let us wish them a successful future.

  101. Gooner in Exile's avatar Gooner in Exile says:

Also RvP and Frimpong have both been on Twitter saying they don’t believe it Kolo would knowingly take banned substances.

Frimpong was also asking whether he should get a gunner tattoo, the fact he is considering it at a young age is either testament to naievety or a belief he will be around for many years to come.

  102. Rasp's avatar Rasp says:

    Morning Raddy,

I was going to put up a clip of Steve Howe playing The Clap, but then I remembered this is a football blog 🙂 Maybe we can continue the music stuff on a slow football evening.

I take it Song’s absence is just a precaution and he’ll be available for tuesday. Having said that, his recent performances have been a bit below par.

  103. mickydidit89's avatar mickydidit89 says:

    Morning all.
    Rasp,
    This is “drifting”.
My first and last musical contribution, but a MUST see.

  104. mickydidit89's avatar mickydidit89 says:

    Right football.
The match day eggs and marmite soldiers are down the hatch. Would love to see Ramsey play some part today.

  105. mickydidit89's avatar mickydidit89 says:

    Rasp,
I am really hoping your “striking Viking” does not start wide right. It is without doubt his most ineffectual position.

  106. Evonne's avatar Evonne says:

Yeah, I cannot wait to see Aaron play again. Rasp – Nic will deliver, no worries. He might be bit slow and appear clumsy at times, but that’s because he is big. His technique and mentality are great. He’ll score, trust me. Rasp – you and Peaches can add youtube videos to the comment line, are the rest of us prohibited?

  107. goonermichael's avatar goonermichael says:

We’re obviously on a different wavelength musically 🙂

  109. Erik the Red's avatar Big Raddy says:

    Thanks

  110. mickydidit89's avatar mickydidit89 says:

    GM,
That video is a wind up, right? 🙂 Reminds me of an early 80’s Kraftwerk concert I went to. Without doubt, the dullest night of my life!!

  111. Erik the Red's avatar Big Raddy says:

GM. We all dance the beat of our own drums !!

  112. Evonne's avatar Evonne says:

GM – cheeky!! Embedding a link works fine, but Peaches and co can insert a clip directly into the comment line. Got it?

  113. goonermichael's avatar goonermichael says:

    Mickey
We had this conversation before remember. Kraftwerk are the nuts. Closely followed by Slade, Sweet, Roxy Music and David Bowie.

And then there’s the Clash and Pistols

  114. Rasp's avatar Rasp says:

    Evonne,

No, I don’t think anyone is prohibited. Just find the youtube clip you want, right click on the clip and cut and paste the address.

  115. Erik the Red's avatar Big Raddy says:

Have to agree GM (except the Pistol).

One can add Pink Floyd, U2, Alison Krauss,R.Stones, Elvis and of course the chaps who got me obsessed in the first place, The Beatles.

but Rasp thinks this is an Arsenal football site 😉

  116. mickydidit89's avatar mickydidit89 says:

    GM,
With you on most of that list. One of the finest gigs I saw was The Clash in Brighton ’81 where Pete Townsend came on for all of the encore’s. Bowie tops by a country mile imo.

  117. Rasp's avatar Rasp says:

    New post….

  118. Erik the Red's avatar Big Raddy says:

One of my fave ever gigs was Bowie at the Rainbow Finsbury Park when he was still doing the Ziggy stuff. For me he lost it after Heroes.

  119. goonermichael's avatar goonermichael says:

Funny enough Micky Kraftwek at the Lyceum was my favourite gig followed by Bowies station to station at wembley. Clash at Shea stadium in New York (supporting the Who) With a backstage pass was a surreal experience.
