As promised by Arsène, Arsenal have signed a player before the start of the World Cup. Maroune Chamakh will take the no 29 shirt. The 26 year old is a French national but chooses to play for Morocco through his parentage. Its not exactly a surprise as he was expected to sign for us as early as last summer and then in January but was needed by his former club Bordeaux.
We’ve been watching youtube clips of him for months and know that he’s pretty good with his head. This is what Arsene had to say about him……………….
“Chamakh is a striker of real quality and has all the attributes suited to come to England and do very well. He is also a fighter, not only a good football player, but a fighter as well. He is very good in the air and also a good team player. He is a great addition to our squad.”
Hes come to us on a free so neither Arsène nor Gazidis will have got excited about wheeling and dealing to bring this one home, but maybe seeing a new player hold our shirt may have wet their appetites to do some deals for other players. Hopefully the tills at The Armoury will be ringing with the sales of ‘Chamakh 29 shirts’ in the coming weeks and that should please the money men.
We’ve got the striker we needed, how that leaves the futures of Eduardo and Vela I don’t know, now for a new Goalie and a Centre-back please.
Arsenal News 24/7

So with the arrival of Chamakh I believe this signing maybe just to cushion the effect of Cesc going in the next few weeks. Of course we all want him to stay, but if not now then he will go next season. He may not feature much in the World Cup in any case, and the only sticking point will be the fee. Yaya was twice linked to us,before he went to Barca, so I can’t see him feauturing in a cash + swap deal. Ibramavich is not needed now, and even if reports are true that Barca are 450 million in debt (as are many other top clubs) I honestly believe it may be better for him to go now than see him next year, knowing he is leaving, and then cause further disruption to the engine room of our team.Ramsey will eventually replace him, but we may have to wait a few seasons for that to happen. He would of course be committed to us, and the tax difference has been hyked up in Spain, so it’s not about money. He wants to go back to his roots, and at 23 has many good years in front of him. The last two players who left us after similar periods at the club,Henry and Viera had served us well, but we got the best years out of them, but this is not the case in Fabregas’s case.i know most of you will counter debate what i have said, but someone had to get things going. Oh, good morning.
Morning Kelsey. I’d rather there was a planned departure (ie that we know he’s going to leave after one more season) than have him leave now. It gives AW time to plan for his successor, whether it’s Ramsey or a new signing from somewhere.
I don’t know whether or not it’s true that the Ronaldo to Real Madrid deal was done the year before he actually left, but if true it didn’t stop him having a phenomenal season for ManUre.
I really think we’ll see a few more signings this summer.
I am starting to agree with London – Chamakh may well be our only signing 😦
Reasons:
1. AW said he wanted to get all his signings done before the WC and there is not even a hint that we are lookng at anyone else.
2. Apparently he is away at the moment and will then be in South Africe working for French TV so presumably not around to concentrate on the small matter of signing players for us.
3. Based on his performance and statements over the last few seasons, it would be entirely in character.
Come off it Rasp – he has already (since the Chamakh announcement) said he’s happy with his forward line-up and now he wants to strengthen other parts of the squad. He mentioned ‘one or two’ more signings, which we could either take literally or we could consider it to be just a figure of speech which could mean more than two coming in (if others go out, like Gallas).
im sorry to see cesc go but with the money we get i hope wenger will buy a decent replacement. ramsey could make that position his but after his horror injury i dnt think he’l come back the same player(just like eduardo). as for chamakh, its mixed feelings. he seems gud in the air and is a hard worker, but isnt a good finisher, much like bend. we need a proven goalscorer. but i welcome his addition. hope he does well for us
I agree with Rocky.
Merida is off, Silvestre and Senderos(squad average players are off) Campbell hasn’t agreed a new deal.Gallas is also on the verge of going and we desperately need a class keeper, which would mean Fabianski going out on loan or Almunia leaving, the first being more probable. Then Eduardo and Vela sold or loaned or stay in the squad. Walcott, though I don’t rate him will stay as loaning him out would be an admission by Wenger that he hasn’t come up to expectations as yet,so a lot to be done yet this summer.
Off to the beach 🙂
AW and club management always say, we have to strengthen the squad and we have money for that…
First of all this is just for cheating the fans. And doing good business in that way.
I say, this is our last summer signing if Gallas doesn’t go.
If club doesn’t want to win anything then why they need to spend money.
I will bet ethan’s house that this is not our last signing (in house joke from another channel)
Cin – if, at the end of the summer, I am wrong about new signings I’ll happily come on here and hold my hands up. Will you do the same if you’re wrong?
I can definitely see us bringing in at least one more signing at CB – he has to. We’ll only have Vermaelen, Djourou and possibly one of Campbell and Gallas so Wenger has little choice there.
Eeeeeemh apparently Nikki B has been mouthing off in the Danish press about the Arsenal medical staff and that he was allegedly playing for weeks/months with a groin injury and there is a slight worry he may miss the World Cup.
Anyways seen as its a quite day I’m off out in the sun with a pint and shall await the Champions League Final – all for Bayern tonight.
Till tomorrow folks.
Looks like everyone is out today 🙂
I attended a 2 y.o.s birthday party. Just the best …… frankfurter hotdogs followed by jelly and ice-cream and cream cakes.
Kids have the best diet…….
Whatever happens don’t tell my Dad but I am going Bayern tonight. The combination of Jose, anti-football (though I expect Inter to attack tonight) and the wrong team from Milan mean I have to support BM.
Brilliant game this afternoon and well done to Blackpool.
6 points to the Arsenal methinks
And whilst I am talking to myself – how is it that the blogosphere has been so quiet about Flamini not being picked for France.
I know Domenech is a man in a bubble but he is talking of playing Diaby in the DM role now Diarra is out. The man is a slice short of a loaf
It’s good for us Dobby needs the experience.
Great new signing yesterday. Great new goalie, great new centre back and then we all wake up. Grrrrrr! we’ll be lucky!
The biggest disappointment for me today was that Blackpool didn’t wear their classic orange/tangerine shirts, but a cracking game.
Can’t say that about the game currently in progress.Did you see that slightly large Inter fan trying to stand on the railings. Classic. 😉
Best team won.
In Wengerlise, ‘a great player’ means…French Speaking), ‘A real asset’…cheap or Free, ‘will be with us for many years’ Free, but lonf term contract yep he has all the ingredient of a real a typical, nice to see he follows the Robbie Keane line, yeah righto!
Hi Essex, what do you mean about “nice to see he follows the Robbie Keane line” That one went over my head.

Good morning,
I have to say the game more or less went the way most predicted. Bayern were pretty average, but if we had players likeCesar,Lucio and Samauel in our defence we would be sorted.
So an Italian team wins the coverted Champions league, without an Italian in the side, including 8 South Americans, and a Portugese manager .
On another point, the momentum is still gahering that Cesc will leave shortly, and Stephen ireland will be available. Any thoughts ?
I like Ireland. He’s a good player alrite. Still think even without Cesc Its a more defensively minded player we need. As good as Cesc is we do have others already in the squad who could replace him provided they had song and Melo Alongside.
Morning all
