Sol …. Man of Steel….

I admit it, when Wenger announced in January that he had signed Sulzeer Jeremiah Cambell, I was less than elated. I would go as far as to say that I thought Mr. Wenger had lost his senses. At that time we had a fine first choice centre back partnership of Gallas and Vermaelen, with Silvestre and Senderos as back up. Wenger clearly mistrusted Swiss Phil to take an active role in the run-in, and Silvestre had shown that despite being a fine player, the years were taking their toll. But a 35 year old has-been?

Wenger had stated that the reason he didn’t sign the much needed Anelka in Jan 2009 was because he did not like to re-sign players, so to sign a 35 year old Sol was a major surprise. When we first heard reports that Sol was training with the team in order to regain fitness, I assumed he would be trying to get a berth at, say Charlton, with a view to becoming player-coach, and then go into management. But I was shocked when Wenger gave him a contract. A contract to a man who had walked of the pitch at half-time claiming emotional problems – an act never repeated before or since, a contract to a man who left to go to….. Portsmouth!

In my eyes Sol was finished, a washed-up a relic of a past and glorious time. Sol had the turning circle of a supertanker, he had an arse the size of France, he was too heavy to jump, was slower over 10 yards than Pat Rice and slower over 30 yards than Peter Hill-Wood. Sol was too old, heavy and unfit to play 45 minutes, let alone 90+.

And yet, and yet ……. the Campbell signing has proved to be one of Wenger’s masterstrokes.

Sol returned in the FA Cup defeat at Stoke and was probably old enough to father most of his Arsenal teammates. Yet, he held the backline and looked good. Next up an excellent performance at Aston Villa –  an away clean sheet. With this appearance Sol became only the third player to play in all 18 PL seasons (alongside Giggs and David James). Sol was settling into the team.

The goal against Porto will be long remembered as the phoenix rising from the ashes. When was the last time he scored like that in Europe (another 2-1 defeat)…… that’s right, the last time he played for us before leaving in 2006.

Then Stoke away. His reaction after the Ramsey injury showed us just why Wenger signed him. He was not just solid but inspirational. Lifting heads, getting fired up, geeing up his team. When the third goal went in, who was pumped up, fists clenched, celebrating with the away fans?  It REALLY matters to him.

Almunia has grown in confidence since the arrival of Sol because he can rely on him to organise the defence at set pieces. The Spaniard actually looks a decent GK again! Whether this is solely down to Campbell’s arrival is a moot point, but is the timing of his improvement only co-incidence?

We now know that Sol will be there in the trenches, giving everything to the Arsenal cause.  Should we win the title, Sol will become an even greater figure in Arsenal folklore than he already is. The man who caused the most virulent outpouring of hate and aggression ever seen at White Hart Lane, will be a true Arsenal Great 🙂

It must be said that some on here completely disagreed with my despair at the Campbell signing, and in deference to them I eat a huge slice of humble pie. Opinions are divided as to whether Sol should play against Barcelona. One thing is for sure, whether he’s on the pitch or sitting on the bench, his mere presence will be felt,  instilling a strength of purpose and steely determination through those deep dark eyes that will be urging the team on with every inch of his being.

As to those, like our very own peachesgooner, whose heart goes aflutter and weak at the knees at the sight of the hunk in the  XXXL shorts….   “Sol’s a Gooner … De de de duh”

  1. Morning all

Raddy is away on holiday but he left us this peach of a post before he went. I am biased but Sol has added so much grit and determination to the team – well done Arsène.

According to Dani Alves we have no chance tomorrow night and it was just lucky that we drew last week!!!!

  2. dandan's avatar dandan says:

Magic stuff Raddy and a damn good read. Sol is a complicated character, but at present few would challenge his loyalty to Arsenal and Arsene. He too must have thought that a bum decision had finished his career but sheer hard work and the generosity of spirit that is the hallmark of Wenger has opened the door for a spectacular climax to a fine career.
Sol will not let us down and will indeed get a new contract if he wants it for next year

  3. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

    Morning peaches, dandan,

Excellent post and good motivational stuff before the CL showdown. I don’t see that Sol is that much slower than when he was at his peak. He is certainly as strong as ever. Maybe he can’t play as many games in a week, but his resolve is immense.

Having said all that, I think Silvestre had a very good game against wolves and if he can play to that standard, I don’t mind him featuring in the wigan and blackburn games – otherwise it’s Sol/Song for the rest of the season at CB for me.

  4. omar's avatar omar says:

What an inspirational player sol is. as much as I have always liked him I thought it would be best if he didn’t play against barca.. But it turned out to be I was wrong coz the defence and who team looked completely unorganized. Sol might be abit slow but he definately knows how to organize the team. Well done arsene and sol

  5. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

Well said Omar. When you’ve lost so many players to injury as we have, strength of character is what is needed to carry you through and Sol has that in abundance.

  6. LB's avatar London says:

Wow, what a great read. I was one of those who always saw Campbell as being a good signing but then again I also saw Silvestre as a clever signing so it is not a case of just taking the popular line. The quality of having two players of their experience being prepared to sit on the bench ready to fill any breach when called upon always struck me as being a no brainer.

I hope you are having a great time in Italy if you are reading this BR

  7. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

Talking of tenacity and determination, I have a lot of admiration for Scott Parker. We have enough midfielders, but I’m sure if we’d signed him a couple of years ago, he’d be a favourite for us. He’s a good footballer in addition to his amazing engine and work rate.

  8. Goonerpower's avatar Goonerpower says:

I have to say I said the same when wenger signed him lol. So I too eat humble pie the guy has been a fantastic signing. IN WENGER WE TRUST. Ain’t that the truth

  9. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

    Morning and welcome Goonerpower,

As well as having an incredible gut feeling that we are on the verge of achieving something extraordinary, I am so looking forward to the day when Arsène has the last laugh – other ‘big’ clubs in financial chaos and us winning trophies on a shoestring courtesy of his foresight and belief in his principles.

  10. If Sol starts tomorrow the team could look like this

    Almunia

    Sagna Vermaelen Sol Clichy

    Nasri Song Diaby

    Eboue Nikki Rosicky

Or maybe Diaby up front and Denilson in the middle and keep Eboue and Theo to unleash later on

  11. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

I think Denilson will start in place of Rosicky in that lineup peaches.

  12. Who to play up front then rasp? Nikki …….

  13. I don’t expect Theo to start and we’re running out of players to play in their right places. Don’t you think Rosicky with start?

  14. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

Definitely Nik up front on his own in a 4:5:1 / 4:3:3. He’ll have to have the game of his life and run himself into the ground. This will be the most important game of his career so far, and that will be true for most of the squad.

  15. So the other five will be DeNasri, DeSong, Denilson, Diaby and D’Eboue? DeSong and Denilson in front of the back four with DeNasri, Diaby and D’Eboue behind Nik like this

    Almunia

    Sagna Vermaelen Sol Clichy

    Denilson Song

    Eboue Nasri Diaby

    Nikki

  16. tommystout's avatar tommystout says:

i agree with your team peaches

in that it will ne eboue and walcott from the bench for tired legs later on.
    i hpe he starts with
    big al
    sag,sol,verm,gael
    denilson,song,nasri,
    rosicky,nik,diaby

    go gunners

  17. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

If Sol plays, I think you’ve got it right there peaches. I don’t see the point of starting with Theo. He’s shown time and time again that he’s great as an impact sub (if given sufficient time) but often when he starts, he drops off a bit after about the hour.

  18. MikE's avatar MikE says:

wonderful to have him back and a great post too!

whether this season ends in tears or jubilation, i hope it will have proven one thing: we need to find a sol mark II for next season.

ok, not someone aged 35 but a tall, strong, commanding and experienced cb who can lead by example and also organise our defence on the pitch for the next three or four seasons.

like sol has and is and adams did. and as (yuck, spit) terry does for chelski.

it goes further – we also need experienced cover at dm. for job description see cb as above!

  19. Morning tommy

If Sol gets tired then Song will have to drop into defence and Diaby will drop back to defend too

  20. dandan's avatar dandan says:

Somehow I think the threat could be much more airial than is usual with Barca tomorrow they having experienced the Flapper we have between the sticks. If that is so then Sol and TV could be immense for us as would Diarby and song with their height playing as a two in front of the back four.
    so I would play.

    Almunia

    Sagna TV Sol Clichy

    Song Diaby

    Woolcott Rosi

    Nasri
    Bendtner

If the high balls can be cut out, then Theo would be ideally place to lead the counter attack and feed Nasri or bendy.

  21. tommystout's avatar tommystout says:

yep thats the only option peaches, im not willing for a sylvester to come into the fray!

  22. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

dandan, we are often described as only having a ‘plan A’, do you think we should/will adopt our usual attacking style or try the ‘away team’ tactics that are usually employed against us in the prem?

  23. tommystout's avatar tommystout says:

no way dan dan, walcott from the bench has been the common theme this season!

  24. tommystout's avatar tommystout says:

hi rasp. i dont think wenger will be naive enough to change our style at this stage…. if we change , we will be ripped apart.
we just have to keep the ball a little better than the first 20 in the first leg

  25. mushser's avatar mushser says:

Sol is very, very hungry. Maybe because he has regretted and finding himself wasted a few years for not playing the highest standard of football. I could see and feel his extreme desire to play well. Sadly I don’t see that in Denilson’s display in most of the matches.

  26. dandan's avatar dandan says:

I think we will try to soak up and counter for a start, hit them on the break, rather than try and play through them, we were given a lesson when we tried that,

Later on, last half hour can revert to type if we have held firm or earlier if we haven’t.
But we should at least try to silence the crowd, charging them gung ho wont do it, we will get picked off.
Theo could come of age tomorrow they have space at the back and second string defenders, so use the bye line and pull the ball back. Simple’s

  27. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

I am inclined to agree tommy. Obviously we have to score to win, as good as Barça were, we didn’t play anywhere near to our standard for the first hour last week. Andy Gray says we need to press them high up the pitch as they did to us, but that does leave us vulnerable to the ball over the top. I’ll be mighty relieved if Alves doesn’t play.

  28. dandan's avatar dandan says:

Don’t forget either in Cesc and AA we have two of our quick feet through the middle merchants missing, the wings have to be our best bet, turn those second string defenders, make em play facing their own goal and we have a chance

  29. tommystout's avatar tommystout says:

and if we press too much then we’ll be knacked for the last 30 mins!

  30. dandan's avatar dandan says:

Thats what subs are for Tommy

  31. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

Haha, we’re arguing against ourselves here. We must press, but we’ll run out of steam; we must defend but not change our style…..
One thing is for sure, every minute that passes that they don’t score or they miss a chance, heaps the pressure on them.

  32. tommystout's avatar tommystout says:

yeah true dan dan but knowing our luck therll be no subs left die to more injuries 🙂

  33. tommystout's avatar tommystout says:

    due 🙂

  34. dandan's avatar dandan says:

Rasp would you argue that the wings are our best bet

  35. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

Yes dandan – when we hit them at pace on the break after defending deep 😆

Seriously though, we must play better when not in possession of the ball. They had too many options for the pass, we weren’t closing down the spaces.

  36. dandan's avatar dandan says:

That I would not argue with, we showed to much respect it was like watching us play Burnley.

  37. tommystout's avatar tommystout says:

i think its football basics, closing down, but there is still a knock on effect with energy conservation – i wouldnt like to be in the managers shoes on this one, but hey we all like to expresss an opinion!

  38. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

It wouldn’t surprise me to see the game go to extra time (2 all in normal time). If that were the case, I would fancy our chances even more, they ran out of steam more than us last week.

  39. We didn’t even attempt to close them down in the first half last week – we only got the ball when they inexplicably lost possession. That must not happen again, we have to fight for the right to play in this game as they are the masters of keep ball.

  40. kelsey's avatar kelsey says:

    Mannone

    Sagna Vermaelen Sol Clichy

    Nasri Song Diaby

    Eboue Nikki Rosicky

Or maybe Diaby up front and Denilson in the middle and keep Eboue and Theo to unleash later on

    Morning all.

  41. Morning kelsey 😛

  42. kelsey's avatar kelsey says:

Almunia cost us two goals at his near post in the final at paris, so he is the only worry for me, morning peaches.

  43. Mannone MANNONE where did that come from kelsey 😆

  44. RockyLives's avatar RockyLives says:

We played below our usual standard against them in the first hour last week. Whether we were overawed, or just didn’t get out of the starting blocks, we contributed towards making them look so good. But that amazing comeback will have altered the mindset of our players and I’m expecting a much better performance all round. I hope Sol plays for all the reasons outlined above, but specifically for the way he will organise our defence.
By the way, did I read that Ibrahimovich is out?

  45. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

Hi Rocky, they are saying that Ibra is out, but I wouldn’t trust it to be true. Bojan would pose a different kind of threat. The one that I hope is true is that Alves is a doubt – but that’s probably only in the same way as Song is a doubt for us.

  46. Morning Rocky – yes Ibrahimovic is out for tomorrow night.

I think we played against them how we’d like teams to play against us – just watch us pass the ball around 😳 However in the real world it is a game of football and both teams have to compete.

  47. tommystout's avatar tommystout says:

drop our skipper kelsey LOL i wish

  48. RockyLives's avatar RockyLives says:

I like Peaches’ team (10.46). If we line up like that I’ll be very happy. And let’s pin up Dani Alves’ comments about us needing a miracle on the dressing room wall.

  49. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

There is no way Arsene will drop Almunia for tomorrow. There is an argument that Mannone did nothing wrong and if kept in the side would certainly play, but this is not the time. Almunia may yet be our penalty saving hero.

  50. tommy’s right kelsey – we haven’t got anyone else to wear the armband ….. not 😦

  51. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

Haha excellent Rocky. On that motivational theme, Sol must play against the spuds. He will be the one individual that would want to win that game more than any other on the planet, but in doing so, it would be St Tottingham’s day and the day we finish their chances of getting into the CL.

  52. kelsey's avatar kelsey says:

There are doubts about Song, as I thought on Saturday he came off with a strain of some sort. Most probably groin.

Yes ,i was joking about Mannone but Almunia never ever inspires confidence for me.

  53. RockyLives's avatar RockyLives says:

Sol to head the winner at the Toilet anyone?

  54. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

    Oh the karma ……

  55. kelsey's avatar kelsey says:

One game at a time Rocky. I want Sol to play tomorrow, but the european refs will do us no favours if he goes in with crunching tackles, even though he is still pretty good at that, in fact he’s the best.

The first half an hour is absolutely crucial for us not o concede or even score. That might sound strange but as underdogs, which we surely are, I see the best chance of winning, as is our norm, with a late late goal while the game is still tied.

  56. Rocky – I’m sure hes dreaming about it already 😉

What is it with the groin strains????????

I was listening the other day to a discussion about why footballers get so many injuries these days. The pitch and the weight of the boots is a contributing factor but also different muscle groups are developed now making the legs much slimmer – more like a runner – and that must be why there are more hamstring and groin strain injuries.

  57. RockyLives's avatar RockyLives says:

Peaches, interesting theory, but at least we know Big Sol doesn’t suffer from thin legs syndrome.
As for Almunia, if he brings his first half performance against Barca into the second leg we’ll be singing his praises. If he brings his second half impersonation of Little Boy Lost, God help us.

  58. kelsey's avatar kelsey says:

Too much sex, is what you really meant, peaches 😉

  59. I asked rasputin to find a picture of Sols magnificent thighs for the post but he only gave me his film star good looks 😳

  60. kelsey's avatar kelsey says:

I remember Peter Simpson playing for us as what was then known as left half, and he used to stub his cigarette out as he came on the pitch, and george best was often inclined to a bit of nookie at half time, didn’t stop him playing well.

  61. Where did he get nookie at half time?

  62. kelsey's avatar kelsey says:

in the away dressing room or at home, he wasn’t fussed.

  63. How much rubbish is there in the press today about Henry’s red card from Saturday? Apparently the players put pressure on the ref and thats why he got sent off FFS!!!!!!!!!

  64. RockyLives's avatar RockyLives says:

Kelsey, I thought you were going to say that Peter Simpson used to stub out his ciggies on his thigh. Thighs were thighs in them days.

  65. 😆 thats funny Rocky

  66. kelsey's avatar kelsey says:

joking apart, he was unlucky never to play for england. he was an earlier version of a mixture of sol and vermin

  67. kelsey's avatar kelsey says:

have a guess where i am going now peaches.

  68. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

Our players play Bridge at half time whilst sipping iced tea … I’m told at totnum they have lesssons on tying their laces and share a can of Tizer.

  69. kelsey's avatar kelsey says:

correct, final fitting today. no holiday over here, laters.

  70. kelsey's avatar kelsey says:

apparently wenger and benitez are taking over as joint managers at real madrid. benitez as he is forever writing notes down as wenger never sees anything.

  71. Tying their laces and sharing a can of Tizer 😛 😀 😆

  72. Final fitting kelsey – thats amazing – only taken what 10 months? Good luck – hopefully you’ll be able to grin widely tomorrow 🙂

  73. SharkeySure's avatar SharkeySure says:

2-0 to Arsenal tomorrow. Song and Sol to score. Two overhead kicks.

Sol lands on Messi, Alves and Xavi after his, injuring all three.

You heard it here first, and my commission on any winning bets is only 5%.

    Sorted.

  74. SharkeySure's avatar SharkeySure says:

    Ooops my manners…

    Afternoon all !

  75. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

Hi Sharkey, you missed one, I’m going for 3 nil … Danny Alves OG from an Almunia goalkick.

  76. Hi Sharkey – you and rasp in competition for the dream of the week 🙄

Actually I reckon they’ve all dreamt about scoring the winner and one of those dreams has to come true 🙂

  77. Sagna maybe – we need an unlikely hero, he had a couple of good chances on Saturday or even a Clichy long range effort – one of those has to go in.

  78. In reality though I’d much rather see wriggle from Nasri or Rosicky – a goal of pure class and skill to win it 😉

  79. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

In keeping with the theme of the season, maybe Denilson will get the winner with one of his long range efforts.

  80. was i only the one who noticed how silver changed poistion with TV against wolves? that is what is needed at the back line. we cover one another, if only those 2 were younger? teams would fear our back four tomorrow i will sleep a happy man knowing we will beat barc 3-1

  81. SharkeySure's avatar SharkeySure says:

I never sleep, so ergo I don’t dream either.

  82. SharkeySure's avatar SharkeySure says:

I sa that too Nasser. Someone else described it as playing in the hole….but for me he was an attacking LB late on

  83. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

Hi nasser, welcome. Yes, TV played pretty much in midfield for the 2nd half and we had a back three – primarily because Wolves posed no attacking threat.

  84. Hi nasser Olubengo – Vermaelen turned into an attacking mid-fielder in the 2nd half so Sylvestre slipped into the middle across the back – sometimes it was only Sol and Eboue in the middle at the back aswell.

Keep the SharkeySureScore machine cranked up then 🙂

  94. blaze gooner's avatar blaze gooner says:

without song, who is going to play CB then?
god, life’s getting tougher and tougher at Arsenal!

  95. sol and tv will play CB’s for sure

    denilson, diaby, nasri midfield

    rosicky bendy eboue front three

that’s my guess, with theo and traore pace off the bench

  96. Rasputin's avatar Rasputin says:

I’m just getting over the shock of hearing that Song is out. I’d have said he was our most important player for the game. Rosicky will have to repay all the time we supported him whilst he was injured. We can forget any defensive plans now – we simply have to outscore Barça.

  97. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

The significance of Sol’s contribution tomorrow has just been magnified 10 fold by the news that Song is out.

  98. kelsey's avatar kelsey says:

  102. kelsey's avatar kelsey says:

Sol Campbell was Arsenal’s other doubt ahead of the second leg. The 35-year-old completed 90 minutes against Wolves but fatigue was always going to be a factor with two high-intensity games in just three days. Wenger will wait until matchday before deciding whether to pick Campbell.

“That is a decision I have to make after speaking to him tomorrow,” said the manager. “Today he was still not completely available although he managed to get a warm-up. To go into such a game you must be completely fit or not play at all.”

    Almunia

    Sagna TV Sol Clichy
    Diaby Dennison
    Woolcott Rosicky
    Nasri

Did anyone else notice Karl Henry used Theo’s calf as a skateboard to slide on after treading on his ankle from behind? This bloke who is whingeing louder than anyone else who he accuses of moaning, should have got a red for that alone.

We could have had two more broken limbs on Saturday down to that one poor excuse for a footballer.

I suppose that was the trade off for injury to Song.

  106. dandan's avatar dandan says:

this is going to be brilliant, i love this.

I have just opened my emails. Yippy

  112. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

    Hi London,

I guess without Ibra up front they won’t pose such an aerial threat so we could play Sagn at CB?

  113. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

Are you some kind of masochist SfH? 😆

  114. bojan is not very pacey either, sol will be fine.

  115. rasp, this is a proper backs against the wall european trip…

you know we always come out on top in these situations 😉

  116. LB's avatar London says:

I love Sol as much as anyone one else and because of that I don’t want to see him get embarrassed by the pace of Messi and co. He does not deserve to leave the Nou Camp with the look of a broken man.

  117. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

My god, this is the most tension I’ve ever felt before a game and there’s 27 hours to go ……

  118. he may not be quick over 20 yards, but he still has a bit of pace of 5 yds.. that is all he needs to deal with messi

his positioning sense, and wealth of experience will help him.

  119. LB's avatar London says:

This feels like some cruel nightmare in which we get the dream tie against Barça and then lose every single one of our world class players.

    Fabregas
    Gallas
    Van Persie
    Arshavin
Song (not world class yet but give him time)

  120. LB's avatar London says:

    I’m loving your optimism SFH

  121. Rasp's avatar Rasputin says:

    London,

Does that mean you have a ticket for the game?

  122. LB's avatar London says:

I think all this “Sol might not make it” stuff coming out of Arsenal.com is paving the way for him to be on the bench.

  123. not sure sol is much use as a sub, either he is fit to play, in which case he starts.. or he aint, in which case he wont be a sub.

  124. LB's avatar London says:

    No Rasp

I could have got one but with it being a Bank Holiday today the flights are crazy and tomorow they will be even worse, it would cost a thousand pounds for the trip and I can’t find anyone else who can afford that. I have done a few of those on my own and have even paid for someone to come with me (Chaf) but this time it is telly for me.

My Yippy was a result of reading Peaches email saying that RockyLives is doing the match report tomorrow, as well as having so much work on my mind I need to recharge my match report writting batteries.

  125. LB's avatar London says:

    SFH

I see it from a different angle: there is no doubt in my mind that Sol is fit; he didn’t get out of second gear against Wolves. The Arsenal PR machine has to prepare you, manage your expectations, put doubt in your mind as to his fitness so that when they play Sagna back there and leave Sol on the bench so it doesn’t create a public out cry.

  126. our mind… or barca’s mind?

    😉

  127. whichever mind, it’s all mind games.

  128. london – so, you think even if sol is fit, sagna could be played in his place as a centre back?

i would bet my house that not to be the case if sol is fit… where are all these negative sol undertones coming from?

the fella has been immense since his return and is only getting better.

why so worried? it’s not as if he has been poor.

  129. LB's avatar London says:

I admire your faith in Sol and if he plays I hope he lives up to expectations but I worry for him. When Wolves put a ball over the top of him on Saturday there was a collective intake of breath. Was this the time when Sol is embarrassed. It’s like watching an old, much loved, prized fighter, no one wants to see him get knocked down but everyone knows that it is going to happen sooner rather than later.

  130. naaah, i don’t share those sentiments.

his positional sense is first rate.

  131. forget his age, bouldie, adams and keown played well into their late thirties

sol is more athletic and naturally fitter than all 3 put together

just keep an eye on his performances, and not his next birthday 😉

  132. LB's avatar London says:

    SFH

It’s an irrational worry for him, it’s not logical but when was supporting a football team logical althought to answer your question, yes, I think even if Sol is fit Wenger may well chose Sagna in the middle rather than him.

And I think that he is putting doubt in our minds over his fitness as a way of preparing the ground.

  133. LB's avatar London says:

Did you ever see the Benfica game at Highbury?

  134. LB's avatar London says:

    SFH

I am not trying to change your mind as I have said above I am loving your optimism but I am worried that’s all.

  135. yes, i remeber that game

what was that fellas name, urine or something that killed us

    why?

  136. fair enough london, we’ll leave the worrying up to you. 😉

i am just exctied, these games don’t come around that often.

  137. LB's avatar London says:

And by the way if you didn’t see the Benfica game at Highbury, Adams and Bould were embarrassed to the point of silence from the home support and ridicle from the away support. It was not pretty.

  138. LB's avatar London says:

You remember the game better than me. I had forgotten the name of our Portuguese tormentor

  139. dandan's avatar dandan says:

Could it be a double bluff, Wenger putting thoughts in Barca minds, so they spend the first twenty minutes knocking long balls in for sol to eat, while we settle into our game.

    Arsene knows my friends

London, be happy, a semi final and final awaits.

  140. ?

london, why oh why bring up a game from almost 20 years ago?

well, if you want to… bould and adams were in there 20’s

    so?

for every negative thought you have, there is a postive

i could recall all those shut out nights in europe like the final in copenhagen

like the away days in madrid and milan in recent times

don’t get how relating a game from then relates to tommorow?

    care to elaborate..

  141. 100% agreed with dandan

  142. LB's avatar London says:

    SFH

Were Adams and Bould really in their twenties? I didn’t realise.

I think we have lost the thread…time to change tack.

    DanDan

I am happy that we are in the quarter finals. I am very excited about the game but given the choice I would play Sagna in the middle. That’s all.

  143. adams was 25, bouldie 29.

  144. LB's avatar London says:

I went to the Bernabeu for the Madrid game, I went to the San Siro for the AC Milan game and I went to Copenhagen for the Galatasry game but I really wish I was going to the Camp Nou tomorrow.

  145. maybe a good job you aint going tommorow, those negative vibes won’t do big sulzar any good 😆

  146. LB's avatar London says:

    SFH

Ignore the Benfica example it obviously isn’t relevant

  147. LB's avatar London says:

    Probably is best Lol

  148. LB's avatar London says:

I’m out for a while SFH, thanks for the chat.

  149. those lucky gooners off to barcelona are in for a treat, whatever happens… it will be an experience.

  150. Hi all

Song is going to be a big miss – he drives play forward after hes broken up an attack. I just hope Denilson watched how he himself performed in the game last week against Barça as he needs to do that again.

Do you think Barça know about teams ‘throwing the kitchen sink’ at them cos thats what I reckon is going to happen.

  151. Did someone mention the Alamo earlier?

  152. RockyLives's avatar RockyLives says:

The Alamo eventually fell (to the Spanish-speaking attackers), so I’ll settle for Rorke’s Drift as the analogy…

  153. RockyLives's avatar RockyLives says:

I have always liked the big European nights where no-one gives us a chance: Turin 1980 (which I listened to on a tiny transistor radio, with the commentary fading in and out like Arshavin’s form; Copenhagen 1994 – who would have thought then that Smudger would turn into such an unsympathetic (to Arsenal) football hack?; Inter Milan 2003; Real Madrid 2006. This one would trump the lot…

  154. RockyLives's avatar RockyLives says:

Looks like everyone’s gone to the pub. Think I’ll follow suit.

  155. SharkeySure's avatar SharkeySure says:

    Songs out. I’m fucking stunned.

    So so gutted.

Then I look at London’s 4.48 team and feel that we still have a chance.

We’ll need monstrous games from Diaby and Sammy Nas, but we can still do it. I don’t really know how, but in my heart I know we can.

    London;s 11 doesn;t include a single poor player

  156. LB's avatar London says:

    I’m hyperventilating already

  157. Morning all
