South Africa 2010 Will Not Be The Send Off OUR Thierry Henry Deserves

SCREW YOU BARCELONA! SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEW YOU!

Ahhhhhhhh I’ve just wanted to say that for some weeks. What a proper pain in the arse they are – first they buy Overmars, Petit, then Henry, then the ice-cream man and now they want Cesc. Stop trying to be us!!

Cesc should know better than want off to Spain – okay you might win a medal or two but your personal career could slump, just ask Hleb or indeed Thierry Henry.

We are all upset that Titi decided to up ship and move to Barcelona in 2007, he should have been Bergkamp MKII, the guy who ended his career in North London. Henry moved on for a meager amount but honestly you know it and I know it, he was never the same Henry.

Rumours abound that Henry failed his medical at Barcelona but they signed him regardless albeit for a far lower price for a player who had been the best in the world (although never recognized) for the previous couple of seasons. Just as when PV04 left, Wenger knew parts of Henry’s body was broken – we had got his best years.

Never at Barcelona have we really seen the Henry that electrified Highbury, the EPL, Europe, the world. The sad thing is, Henry may well not get the send off he deserves either – his career has seemed to just peter out, fading away to be replaced by memories.

Henry’s problem comes in the way he plays the game. Bergkamp, Cantona, Zidane could all go out on a high because their bodies let them. Their game was based on being five seconds ahead of everyone else – Henry’s is based on GETTING THERE five seconds ahead of everyone else. So while Bergkamp could play the game in his head, Henry had to play it with his body and now his body is broken.

Sadly, Henry knows this better than anyone else. Why else would he feel the need to handle the ball twice against Ireland in the World Cup qualifier? The REAL Henry would have stretched out those never ending legs of his, nipped the ball back into his body and stuck it into the net. But not this time, this time he couldn’t – he had to cheat to help his country.

Now, this isn’t a whine. Yes, I’m still upset that the Rep.Ireland lost out but my anger is not aimed at Henry (though it was at the time) my anger is aimed at the idiot that calls himself the French manager and the muppets at FIFA and UEFA who chose to overlook what Henry did saying they couldn’t challenge the referee’s decision – funny how they felt differently when it came to Eduardo’s “dive” against Celtic isn’t it?

What is most upsetting is not what Henry did, or who he did it against, its most upsetting that he had to do it. Besides, while it was a sly handball we all know only one man can handball in a match and I’m going to leave it to my man Kanye West to say it best:

*NOTE

So now its World Cup time and it could be a ignominious end for the great man. Commentators and critics won’t let him forget the handball. The Captain’s armband has gone to the ever unlikable Patrice Evra while Henry has been dropped to the bench in favour of Nicholas Anelka.

France have a good side, a side capable of beating anyone on their day – but they have a dreadful excuse for a manager who I once heard couldn’t manage his way out of a paper bag. They might get through their group but despite it being easy on paper I’d not be so sure.

Nasri is already sure of a long summer while Diaby, Sagna, Clichy and Gallas could have an extended one too. Its said that Henry is off to New York after the tournament – his sitting on the bench while Jeffran came on against Inter Milan suggests this is true – the death knell to any hopes of a good send-off.

Henry’s career might end quietly but lets make sure its always remembered. Screw the handball and screw Barcelona – lets remember and make sure the world remembers the goals against Manchester United, Spurs and Real Madrid. Lets make sure the world remembers the Henry stare after he scored a goal. Lets makes sure the world remembers that for three seasons he was the best player to grace a football field because from Arsenal fans, that’s the very least Thierry Henry deserves.

  1. Gooner from Sydney says:

    too right

  2. London says:

    Morning all

Another gem from the Emerald Isle and talkng of gems when I read you posts I play a little game, find the gem, and today, for me, it was: Their game (Bergkamp) was based on being five seconds ahead of everyone else – Henry’s is based on GETTING THERE five seconds ahead of everyone else.” Great observation, although, “screw you Barcelona, stop trying to be us” came a close second lol.

  3. dandan says:

Super article Irish, how come you didn’t mention how edible he was LOL.

Even Rolls Royce’s wear out in time and TH14 was top of the range, the thoroughbred that used to float along , now runs like a mere human. Thanks for all the good times Titi and enjoy the stateside swansong.
As for the handball, happens all the time, some the refs see some they don’t.

  4. boro says:

despite all hate from irish fans and allegations from pundits H14 will remain an icon of arsenal fans. you have a chance again titi, prove them wrong

  5. London says:

    The world cup

I don’t know about you but on reflection I thought both of those games yesterday were poor — very, very poor. It was a bit like driving along a motor way for days on end getting more and more hungry then finally you see a service station and stop to eat, you are so grateful at the time that you convince yourself that it is good but then when you wake up the following morning you realise just how average motorway food is.

  6. andy says:

haha like it Irish. Screw Barca, i dont know what all the fuss is about. I hate it when players talk about Barca like its the promised land or something. TH will always be remembered as an Arsenal great not just another ex-great strolling around in the sun earning a fortune. When will they learn that we only let them have our cast-offs.

  7. andy says:

By the way TH….absolute legend, always was, always will be !

  8. Rasp says:

    Great post irish,

I’m sure TH would have been world player of the year on more than one occasion had he played for Barcelona at that stage of his career.

  9. irishgunner says:

Afternoon guys – glad you liked the post, its how I feel.

London – totally agree, two very poor games although I found the South Africans a joy to watch because they tried ever so hard, they didn’t want to leave their fans and country down, I hope they get through.

Thank heavens South Korea just went ahead, now Greece have to try to play. Very sad the stadium is half empty – get some poor kids in there FIFA!!!

  10. irishgunner says:

Dandan – I’m sad at the thought of Henry going to the USA although its something he has always seemed to want – more for the lifestyle than football quality I’m sure.

I’m going to probably upset any American we might get here but they just won’t appreciate him. I don’t like sport in America – its too commercial and the press seem more concerned about reporting on what celebrity turned up at a game as opposed to the game itself.

  11. irishgunner says:

That was a good goal by Park Ji Sung.

  12. RockyLives says:

Hello All. Good piece Irish. You hit the nail on the head when you said that TH relies on speed of running whereas DB was all about speed of thought. Even when DB had lost a yard he was still effective because he played in a position which was not just a bout speed.
Even so, TH has a great football brain and incredible skill. I wonder if he could ever have dropped back into a different position (the DB10 position, or an attacking central MF).
He’s still one of the best we’ve ever seen at Arsenal.

  13. RockyLives says:

The Argies look dangerous with every attack.

  14. irishgunner says:

    Afternoon Rocky.

I’m not sure could Henry have played the DB10 role, not really his style. He is a very intelligent player but his intelligence was based on using his pace and power to get past people while the likes of DB10 could just do the most ridiculous thing with a football or pick a pass very few others could.

Good game this – Argentina are very rocky defensively but brilliant going forward. Terrible miss by Higuain, terrible defending for the goal but Messi is really getting involved so far.

  15. RockyLives says:

Every ‘keeper I see in this competition I think “yeah, he’ll do…”

  16. irishgunner says:

The Nigerian keeper is having a stormer.

  17. irishgunner says:

Except the Mexican keeper last night Rocky, jaysus he was terrible, the South Korean lad was pretty terrible as well today but got away with it.

  18. RockyLives says:

I would take either ahead of Fabianski.
The Koreans looked good overall – a bit like they were 8 years ago. Full of energy and bite.
Mind you, the Greeks were pretty poor.

  19. irishgunner says:

“pretty poor” is being too kind, they were brutal. The Koreans were full of running and played some good patterns but ran themselves into a ground and a better side would have picked them off in the last 20 minutes.

Nigeria are doing okay, I can nearly see them and the Argies going through from this group.

  20. RockyLives says:

Yeah – I had Argentina and Nigeria going through from this group in my predictions…

  21. RockyLives says:

Did you enjoy the moment yesterday when TH appealed for a handball against the Uruguayan defender and then realised what he was doing and quickly stopped?

  22. irishgunner says:

LOL yep ha ha on one of the Irish tabloids today it had a picture of Henry looking for the handball and the headline “The Gaul of Henry” ha ha

  23. RockyLives says:

    LOL

  24. RockyLives says:

    That Messi’s rubbish.

  25. irishgunner says:

    Complete cack so he is.

  26. Farooq says:

I don’t know why France’s top scorer in qualifying is on the bench. Domenech probably observed that the color of the moon was a bit yellow, and since Anelka wears yellow boots he should start in front of Henry ( In reference to Domenech believing in Astrology)

  27. irishgunner says:

It must be the ball – not one has got the ball up and down over the wall at a free kick and they have the distance to do so.

  28. RockyLives says:

    Veron displaying his ManUre form…

  29. RockyLives says:

Domenech is such a crap coach. France bumbled and stumbled their way to the WC Final four years ago despite not being in the top five teams at that tournament, so mad Ray kept his job.

  30. irishgunner says:

Farooq – I think your spot on, on how Domenech picks his start XI.

Has he ever won anything as a manager? There is something amiss with him and how he gets work. You should check his wikipedia page – ” Raymond Domenech (born 24 January 1952 in Lyon) is a retired French footballer and the current manager of the French national team. He is regarded all over the world as the worst football manager ever.”

  31. RockyLives says:

Not sure you’re right about the ball Irish. Those free kicks will start going in soon.

  32. irishgunner says:

Rocky – France made the World Cup Final four years ago INSPITE of Domenech not because of him.

A bloody monkey without arms would be able to manage the French team better than him.

  33. RockyLives says:

    World’s greatest player?

  34. irishgunner says:

True Rocky we can really only judge the ball at the end if no-one scores a free kick ha ha

  35. RockyLives says:

Argentina don’t look like world champs.

  36. irishgunner says:

The competition only really starts in the knock out stages though – that when the winners shine through.

Like the Germans, Italians, Brazilians etc just do enough to get through the group and then up it a few gears.

  37. RockyLives says:

True Irish. Often the shining lights of the group stages splutter out in the knock-outs.

  38. irishgunner says:

    Namely the Dutch.

  39. RockyLives says:

This WC is badly in need of a really dramatic game – a see-sawing 4-3, or a dramatic comeback to win 3-2 from 2-0 down or a spectacular last minute winner or somesuch.

  40. RockyLives says:

LOL: I’m predicting the Dutch to win it this time.

  41. irishgunner says:

Ha ha I’ve them backed too. €5 at 10/1 to win, I’ll be a millionaire ha ha

  42. kelsey says:

Afternoon all, and as usual a well written post Irish. We have some top writers on here.

I agree about the opening games, nothing to get excited about, but that is usually the norm.Argentina looked good in attack, but very vunerable in defence(remind you of anyone).I though the Nigerian keeper was mighty impressive, and though I didn’t catch all of the S.Korea v Greece match, one wonders how some of these teams qualified.

  43. irishgunner says:

    Evening Kelsey and thanks :)

Agreed on all you’ve said in your post. Hopefully England vs USA will liven up the tournament and get it going.

  44. SharkeySure says:

    Evening all

    Another good post Irish.

Can you believe some fans would STILL have Henry back..??

    Hilarious really

  45. irishgunner says:

    Evening Sharkey.

    Its nostalgia isn’t it?

  46. kelsey says:

Well we now know who our new keeper will be ;)

Is lennon or SWP better than Walcott….No,No,NO

  47. Rasp says:

Robert Green does a very good Paul Robinson impression :(

  48. kelsey says:

And Almunia nearly opted for British Citizenship :)

  49. kelsey says:

And the english keeper is wearing a calamity green jersey.

  50. Big Raddy says:

    Evening

    Fine post Irish.

Having seen that ricket, he must be AFC bound

  51. Big Raddy says:

    It’s camouflage Kelsey.

  52. Rasp says:

Rooney has been pretty quiet – he’ll probably score in the 2nd half.

  53. Big Raddy says:

    Is Lampard playing?

  54. Rasp says:

Heskey’s been one of our best players. Rooney keeps getting dispossessed

  55. Rasp says:

It was a mistake to take Ledley King to the WC.

  56. Big Raddy says:

What happened to Milner? The Danish commentators haven’t said.

But at least we got a half out of King ;-)

  57. Big Raddy says:

    Dreadful from Carragher.

We have too many passengers in the team, and we need to get the ball to Rooney’s feet

  58. Rasp says:

I don’t think Milner had recovered fully from his temperature Raddy, he was getting done for pace and picked up a yellow.

  59. Big Raddy says:

    Lennon’s distribution has been dreadful.

    SWP anonymous.

Carragher appalling. Heskey poor apart from one pass.

    Lampard feaatured for 10 minutes.

Gerrard, Rooney, Cole , Terry, Johnson were OK.

I hope Barry will be fit for the next game

  60. Big Raddy says:

Hey, at least they can’t blame Theo :-)

  61. kelsey says:

I don’t think Rooney is fully fit, he seemed quite cautious during the game, and now the squad is somewhat depleted after the first game.

  62. Big Raddy says:

We desperately missed Barry. Lamps and Gerrard can only function when playing with a holding DM. And we have seen the last of SWP, King and Carragher.

    Capello must play Dawson

  63. Big Raddy says:

You may well be right Kelsey

  64. dandan says:

Waddle says we did all right, Gk made a mistake, move on…. Townsend says no one played badly….. I say, if after every header the second ball goes to the opposition why not play with the ball on the ground….. Where was the killer pace from SWP and Lennon…. Theo have another drink and enjoy the sunshine on your beach…England will miss you more than you miss them… Hope our ex physio is on form they gonna need him….. Oh well its only the world cup, not to worry.

  65. RockyLives says:

    We were pretty poor.
Lennon and SWP offered very little.
Most surprising, Rooney didn’t seem at the races.
Taking King was madness – the guy can”t even play two consecutive games for his club.
Milner is no more than a hard-working PL player – nowhere near international class.
You look around that team and think “where is the flair coming from?” After Rooney we don’t really have a flair player in the team. Get Joe Cole in for the next game, pronto.

  66. Anibal says:

    amen brother!!!!!! excelent post!!!

  67. kelsey says:

    Morning,

as I suspected Gallas,Campbell and Silvestre have all been released, according to our chairman in today’s Daily Star.

On reflection last night’s game was not a disaster, but nevertheless a few questions have to be raised, for as a team England looked bereft of ideas or a definite game plan.
Did we look like a team, chomping at the bit ? I think too much football has caught up with us and Capello has to be answerable for a number of things.
Was it a risk to include King.
Why did Milner play, when he had been unwell all week.
    Rooney was not fit.

SWP and lennon showed next to nothing,so why were they chosen ahead of Theo
Green, obviously didn’t intend to make a howler, but it’s blatantly clear,we don’t have an outstanding first choice keeper.

Last but not least, is that we can’t assemble 23 English players good enough for a tournament such as this, a poor reflection of the talent available.

  68. London says:

    Morning Kelsey

I have a question, in Spain the English football team are referred to as “Los pross” have you any idea why or is there anyone you can ask to find out.

  69. London says:

    London says:
    June 10, 2010 at 1:50 pm (Edit)

If I try and put myself in Wenger’s shoes I don’t think I would see a lot of difference between Green and Fabianski, I am not entirely convinced that Wenger sees a great deal of deference between Almunia and Schwarzer. Although, it is encouraging that Hill-Wood has allegedly announced through his mouth piece the Star, is it possible for the word juxtaposition to be more appropriate, that Fulham have rejected an offer.

  70. London says:

Well I have searched high and low for something that says we have let Gallas, Campbell and Silvestre go but I can’t find a word.

  71. kelsey says:

It is direct quote in The Star from our chairman. The Star appears to be his mouthpiece.

I will endeavour to find out about Los pross.

  72. Morning all

I’m putting up the new post but if you want to re-post any of your comments about last nights game please go ahead.
